Annotation:
Mixed methods research (MMR) is increasingly becoming a popular methodological approach in several fields due to the promise it holds for comprehensive understanding of complex problems being researched. However, researchers interested in MMR often lack reference to a guide that can explain the key issues pertaining to the paradigm wars influencing MMR, different objectives of MMR, choice of MMR designs, and articulation of research questions in MMR. This paper addresses that gap through providing a peek into these issues through illustrative examples. This brief introduction to MMR is meant to encourage readers to delve deeper into the MMR literature and make informed decisions in designing and implementing MMR studies.

Annotation:
Across geography there has been variable engagement with the use of simulation and agent-based modelling. We argue that agent-based simulation provides a complementary method to investigate geographical issues which need not be used in ways that are epistemologically different in kind from some other approaches in contemporary geography. We propose mixed qualitative-simulation methods that iterate back-and-forth between ‘thick’ (qualitative) and ‘thin’ (simulation) approaches and between the theory and data they produce. These mixed methods accept simulation modelling as process and practice; a way of using computers with concepts and data to ensure social theory remains embedded in day-to-day geographical thinking.

The Titanic quantitative dataset has long been used to teach statistics. However, combining the quantitative dataset with a qualitative dataset of survivor testimonies shows that the Titanic case is an even better example to teach mixed methods. This article offers practical tools to teach mixed methods to undergraduate or postgraduate students in the social sciences, using the Titanic datasets. Based on an empirical analysis of the survival probabilities on the Titanic, we show how mixed methods lead to superior explanations than mono-method strategies. This paper has two goals: 1) to introduce the freely available linked Titanic datasets; and 2) to present a three-hour step-by-step exercise with the Titanic datasets that can be used to learn and teach mixed methods.

This article presents a thorough review of the literature dedicated to learning more about mixed methods research design. Explanatory sequential mixed methods studies and exploratory sequential mixed methods studies are the two types of mixed methods research design models that this article presents in detail. To contextualize different ideas related to research design, the author provides examples of research studies that exemplify different research designs falling within mixed methods. The main objective of this article is to highlight the important role that qualitative research design plays in mixed methods research. Such a presentation of the literature aims to argue that qualitative data substantiates quantitative data as a means to heighten the regard to which qualitative methodology receives.

Integration—or the meaningful bringing together of different data sets, sampling strategies, research designs, analytic procedures, inferences, or the like—is considered by many to be the hallmark characteristic of mixed methods research. Poetry, with its innate capacity for leveraging human creativity, and like arts-based research more generally, which can provide holistic and complexity-based perspectives through various approaches to data collection, analysis, and representation, can offer something of interest to dialogue on integration in mixed methods research. Therefore, in this editorial, we discuss and promote the use of poetry in mixed methods research. We contend that the complexities and mean-making parallelisms between poetry and mixed methods research render them relevant partners in a quest to complete the hermeneutic circle whose origin represents experiences, phenomena, information, and/or the like. We advance the notion that including poetic representation facilitates the mixed methods research process as a dynamic, iterative, interactive, synergistic, integrative, holistic, embodied, creative, artistic, and transformational meaning-making process that opens up a new epistemological, theoretical, and methodological space. We refer to this as the fourth space, where the quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and poetic research traditions intersect to enable different and deeper levels of meaning making to occur. We end our editorial with a poetic representation driven by a word count analysis of our editorial and that synthesizes our thoughts regarding the intersection of poetry and mixed methods research within this fourth space—a representation that we have entitled, “Dear Article.”

Developmental research is widely used in instructional development which tends to use different data collection methods. The research questions of an instructional development study can be looked at from different angles andusing different methods to approach its research questions. This paper presents an analysis of a developmental research study by Ma (2012), which comprised eleven research questions. Ma sstudy developed from Phase One: identifying the target group scurrent vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary level, to Phase Two: identifying the characteristics of a vocabulary learning system, to Phase Three: designing a vocabulary learning modulefor Chinese EFL learners. Ma used a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods to give the depth and breadth to the development of her instructional module. Ma's study is distinctively a developmental research employing a mixed methods approach.
