The detection of human and non-human animals and their unique (and potentially dangerous) “animation” would have been important to our ancestors’ survival. It would seem plausible that our ancestors would have required a vigilance above and beyond that dedicated to other, inanimate, objects. Considering the millions of years of expending extra energy to monitor these objects, it would also seem likely, at least as advocated by New, Cosmides, and Tooby (2007), that the human visual system would have developed mechanisms to allocate attention automatically and quickly to these objects. We tested the New et al. (2007) “animate monitoring” hypothesis by presenting viewers with a group of animate objects and a group of inanimate objects using the flicker task—a task that is assumed to be one that measures automatic visual attention. These objects were presented on a variety of backgrounds of natural scenes, including some backgrounds that were contextually inconsistent with the target objects. These objects were also presented in either a consistent location within each scene or a location that violated that consistency. Only people objects were consistently more readily detected, not animated objects in general. Detection in this task was affected by more than just the information provided by the target object. Both results provide a serious challenge to the “animate monitoring” hypothesis. Furthermore, the results were shown not to be due to peculiarities of our stimulus set, or by how interesting the members of each object category were. iv

Sir James Mitchell was a man with a passion and vision for a prosperous Western Australia, the land of his birth. His faith in Western Australia’s potential to become a thriving agricultural producing state drove him to fight for, and implement, policies which left his political colleagues in doubtful bewilderment. Nothing however, could dim his vision. This thesis is a study of Sir James’s Mitchell’s political personality and some of his achievements. These include, the Empire Settlement Scheme of 1922, the opening up and rapid development of the wheatbelt and his successes and challenges associated with this development throughout Western Australia between 1905 and 1933. In writing this dissertation I have been profoundly impacted by the discovery of the political character of Sir James Mitchell the politician who was also my grandfather, and intrigued by how the public figure identifies with the family figure who was very much part of my childhood and early adult years. Sir James Mitchell lived to see Western Australia’s agricultural industries become one of the state’s major sources of export revenue. Nearly a century later he is still remembered with respectful affection throughout the state as a great Western Australian.

This investigation into the oeuvre of Thomas Mitchell, the Surveyor-General of New South Wales from 1827 to 1855, intends to reveal the remarkable opus of work he produced and enquire how he achieved it. The feat that won him fame was his discovery of the rich pasturelands and picturesque landscapes in an area that is now western Victoria, which he called Australia Felix. He matched this enthusiastic name with a finely illustrated and densely detailed two-volume journal of his three exploratory journeys - ostensibly to find where the River Darling met the Murray River. Mitchell learnt his trade as a surveyor and mapmaker in Wellington’s army fighting the French in Spain and Portugal, that theatre of the Napoleonic Wars termed the Peninsular War. The objective of this thesis is twofold. The first is the exposition of a rare and remarkable atlas of battlefield plans he was commissioned to survey at the conclusion of the war, a task which took him five years in the field, but was only completed and published 25 years later. There are only two known copies of this immense tome in Australian public libraries. The parallel plan is to relate it to the wealth of imagery with which he illustrated the journal of his expedition in 1836 that discovered Australia Felix. By the artifice of fusing the magnificent maps and landscapes in the atlas with the illustrations in the journals, together with his unpublished artwork, and commissioned structures, a metaphorical map of the new Promised Land can be attempted. Set in a period of revolution and European expansion, it is a study encompassing histories of nationalism, exploration, cartography, colonisation, indigenous relations, warfare, art, and theories of landscape art, architecture, neoclassicism and romanticism, and the aesthetics of the sublime, the beautiful and the picturesque.

By adapting Mitchell's algorithm for floating-point numbers, one can efficiently perform arithmetic floating-point operations in an approximate logarithmic domain in order to perform approximate computations of functions such as multiplication, division, square root and others. This work examines how this algorithm can be improved in terms of accuracy and hardware complexity by applying a set of various methods that are parametrized and offer a large design space. Optimal coefficients for a large portion of this space is determined and used to synthesize circuits for both ASIC and FPGA circuits using the bfloat16 format\@. Optimal configurations are then extracted to create an optimal curve where one can select an acceptable error range and obtain a circuit with a minimal hardware cost.

Injustices and oppressions faced by subalterns have been studied for some decades by Subaltern Studies Groups, whether of Indian or Latin origin. With the aid of the group researches, contemporarily, excluded individuals acquire a voice, being heard and respected. Considering these facts, the dissertation aims to contribute to this fight by studying how subalternity is represented in characters in Cloud Atlas (2004), a novel written by David Mitchell. In our analysis, we will highlight the presence of hegemonic structure critiques in the construction of characters from subaltern groups. They belong to societies organized in a social and economic hierarchy, responsible for subjugation and muffling of subaltern’s voices. We will observe how Mitchell gives voice to characters who subvert the contempt, attack or even muzzling subalterns. As a criticaltheoretical approach, we base our research on Grosfoguel (2008), Mignolo (2007) and Castro-Goméz (2005), to discuss issues related to decoloniality; in Foucault (2015), Rabinow and Rose (2006), to deal with the concept of biopower; in Butler (2003), Foucault (1980) and Stadniky (2007), to study identity and gender issues; in Arendt (2000), Bauman (2014), Butler and Spivak (2007), to discuss subaltern freedom; in Bauman (2014) and Eagleton (2004, 1996), to study concepts related to contemporaneity; and finally, Bhabha (2013) and Santana (2008), to discuss issues related to different conceptions of time.

This thesis focusses on the development and testing of optimization methods for parameter identification in cardiac electrophysiology models. Cardiac electrophysiology models are systems of differential equations representing the evolution of the trans-membrane potential of cardiac cells. The Mitchell-Schaeffer model is chosen for this thesis. The parameters included in the Mitchell-Schaeffer model are optimally adjusted so that the solution of the model has desired properties. Two optimization problems are formulated using least-square functions to identify parameters that match phase durations and parameters that fit entire potential recordings of swine heart tissue acquired via optical imaging techniques at different stimulation frequencies. The non-differentiable optimization methods (Compass Search and three other variants) are applied to solving both optimization problems for two reasons; First, the methods are studied to evaluate performance and second, the optimization process is evaluated to confirm its ability to identify parameters for the Mitchell-Schaeffer model.

The objective of this paper was to examine a selection of contemporary utopian texts by David Mitchell, Jeanette Winterson and Kazuo Ishiguro in an effort to understand how their alternative realities might address man’s amalgamation of postmodern identities. In the texts, the human protagonists attempted to cast the pastoral landscapes of their youth as sites of safety and sanctity in order to sustain their modern reality, yet their attempts to return to or embrace the pastoral were a failure in part because of the intrusion of modernity into the spaces and in part because they themselves had become modern entities. The posthumans in these texts, including cyborgs, clones and robo sapiens, were emblematic creatures that served a dual role. They were both the subservient foundation of the utopias in these stories, as well as reflections of the postmodern human condition, which was artificially reliant on religion and consumerism for its modes of identity. Each of these texts yielded one particular voice that embodied and celebrated the postmodern experience and the hybridity that is an innate part of it. These characters functioned as important models of negotiation, providing a constructive bridge to the postmodern future for humanity, whether they worked within the societal systems of their eras in order to seek change or rebelled from society, fighting the classifications that defined their identities.

Annotation:
This thesis examines Lewis Grassic Gibbon/James Leslie Mitchell's promotion of the transformative power of the feminine and its offshoot of freer sexuality as a basis for new relationships among individuals, their societies and the world. As a result of Gibbon's revaluation of gender values, the feminine becomes identified as innate human "good," largely subsumed under, and set in opposition to, the evil perpetrated by the masculine historical process. Distinct from actual women, the feminine can be reclaimed by men too, affecting Gibbon's representations of both sexes. The feminine emerges as revolutionary - and not a conservative form of symbolism limiting women's subjectivity - in that it prepares the ground for a return to society and fuels both men and women with the power to challenge society's (masculine) values and institutions. A world-view structured around a gender dichotomy is nothing new. An overview of Gibbon's literary contemporaries, however, reveals that his prioritising of gender and sexual issues is unusual for a Scots male writer of the 1920sl1930s, although it does align him with female, feminist writers of his period (ch. I). Gibbon's early writing reconsiders stereotypes and archetypes of women/femininity but does not advance a practical programme for change (eh. 2). The influence ofDiffusionism, pronounced after 1930, manifests itself by portrayals of the male's re-connection to his "pre-civilisation" self through the feminine, allowing men and women together to renounce evils such as religion and masculine versions of history (eh. 3). Chapter 4 analyses various models that interact with factors such as race and sexual orientation to transcend gender disunity, although Gibbon's vision is occasionally marred by scepticism and blind-spots. His later work reveals a developing conviction that the individual- male or female - may have to lead the battle against evil, aiding transmission of the idea of "good." This, however, may lead to an overwriting of essential feminine values as is seen by the ending of A Scots Quair (chs. 5 & 6). In an analysis giving equal weight to most of his fiction, the thesis concludes that Gibbon's first step to solving civilization's malaise is a movement beyond polarities that make genders and sexes antagonistic, a ''third way," creating a rebirth of the individual and society when people re-awaken to the divinity in self and other and reconnect to the feminine. This movement, however, runs the risk of staying conjectural since actual measures for social change prove harder for Gibbon to delineate.

Annotation:
Gully erosion is the process by which running water cuts new unstable channels into erodible regolith. It causes severe land degradation, is a major component of contemporary sediment budgets, and is a major source of sediment pollution to aquatic ecosystems. In northern Australia, there is widespread gully erosion into unconfined alluvial deposits on active and abandoned floodplains – here defined as alluvial gully erosion. In catchments draining to the Gulf of Carpentaria, alluvial gullies can cover 0.2% to 1.0 % of the total catchment area and locally >10% of the floodplain area. Alluvial gully erosion has been poorly documented and differs substantially from colluvial or hillslope gullying in south-eastern or northern Australia. The objectives of this research were to investigate and quantify alluvial gully erosion processes and rates at a variety of spatial and temporal scales across a pilot study area, which encompasses the Mitchell River fluvial megafan on the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland. Along the Mitchell megafan, alluvial gullies are concentrated along main drainage channels. Their scarp heights and potential energy are highly correlated to the local relief between the floodplain and river thalweg, which is a result of river incision into the megafan since the Pleistocene. Other factors such as floodplain hydrology, soil texture and chemistry, vegetation cover, and land-use disturbance also influence the distribution and propagation of gullies, via changes in the driving and resisting forces. The frequency of river flood inundation of alluvial gullies on the floodplain changes longitudinally according to river incision and confinement. Near the top of the megafan, flood water is contained in the macro-channel up to the 100-yr recurrence interval (RI) but still backwaters adjacent alluvial gullies. In downstream Holocene floodplains, complete inundation of alluvial gullies occurs beyond the 3- to 5-yr RI and can contribute significantly to total annual erosion. However, a majority of gully scarp retreat is still driven by direct rainfall and infiltration-excess runoff, with the 24-hr rainfall total being the most predictive variable. This direct erosion is enhanced by inherent soil dispersibility and the lack of vegetative cover, with the later if present having the potential to dissipate the effective kinetic energy of rainfall and promote infiltration.

Institutionnalism is a conunter movement of american political econoly which rejects, during the period between the world wars, the principle of autonomy of economic order relative to other social dimensions. Thus. Social order is understood with a concept of institution that designates the ensemble of mental qschemas, producing the foreseeable inflexibility of individual behaviors. Mitchell, veblen and commons are usually considered to be the founders of this school of thought. Nevertheless, polanyi is included in this school to the extent that his approach enriches institutionalism through comparative economics. These authors advance the hypothesis that debt is an essential social interaction. The system of debt creation and release (i. E. Monetary practices) therefore becomes a fundamental institution of the economy. Finally. They emphasize the importance the futurity and power relations for explaining crisis

The ability of silver perch, Bidyanus bidyanus, to digest, tolerate and utilise dietary carbohydrate as an energy source to spare protein was investigated. A series of in vivo digestibility experiments was carried out to assess the ability of silver perch to digest dietary carbohydrate. Results indicated that wheat starch was digested more efficiently than maize starch, pea starch or potato starch. Cooking increased the energy digestibility of diets containing starch. Both the degree of gelatinisation (80>50>25=0%) and inclusion content (30>60%) influenced the digestibility of wheat starch. Protein digestibilities of diets containing up to 60% starch were unaffected. A reduction in the complexity of wheat starch also influenced carbohydrate digestibility. Carbohydrate digestibilities were ranked as follows: Dextrin = gelatinised starch= maltose= glucose >raw starch. The addition ofNatustarch® at a rate of 50 mg kg dief1 increased the digestibility of raw wheat starch, however, the digestibility of gelatinised wheat starch, which was already higher than enzyme treated raw starch, was not improved. The addition of Natugrain-blencl® (j3-glucanase and 13- xylanase, specific to non-starch polysaccharides [NSPs]) at up 1o 300 J.LL kg-1 to diets containing 30% wheat or de-hulled lupins had no effect on energy or protein digestibility of the diets or ingredients. Silver perch digest the energy from wheat more efficiently than from de-hulled lupins. Silver perch lack the ability to digest energy from NSPs. Intra-peritoneal carbohydrate tolerance tests were carried out to assess the ability of silver perch to utilise the predominant monosaccharides (glucose, galactose and xylose) in plant ingredients currently being used in the fonnulation of aquaculture 11 feeds for this species. When injected with a dose rate of 0.1 g carbohydrate kg body weighf1 , silver perch were glucose tolerant, and galactose and xylose intolerant. Glucose tolerance was progressively compromised with increasing dose rate of glucose.

This work explains the basis of the common good concept in John Mitchell Finnis’ thought. This legal philosopher has as a starting point to reflexion a reinterpretation of thomistic ethics. Its importance lays on the treatment given to the separation of four orders of knowledge, specially the separation between natural and practical order. The latter has its own directives. Therefore, such as in the natural order of knowledge the first directive is the principle of no contradiction, in the practical order the first principle is that good is to be done and pursued, and bad is to be avoided. These postulates are not imperatives or indicatives, but directives; in the case of practical order, a directive to action. An episthemological implication is that the immediate foundation of human action is not in human nature, but in the practical perception of goods to be achieved and of the bads to be avoided. There is a determined number of basic human goods, which are the primary reasons of human action. They are objective, incommensurable, self-evident and pre-moral. The list proposed by Finnis is life, knowledge, marriage, excellence in performance, sociability/friendship, practical reasonableness and ‘religion’. The content of morality results of this human goods. It has as supreme principle that every choice should favour and respect integral human well-being. Beside to synthesize the correction to individual action, morality also bases and demands a correct social action, which is expressed in the concept of common good. Finnis well defines common good in the following terms: a set of conditions which enables the members of a community to attain for themselves to reasonables objectives, or to realise reasonably for themselves the value(s), for the sake of which they have reason to collaborate with each other (positively and/or negatively) in the community. Justice is the specific content of the common good of political community. Law is the object of justice and, therefore, the means through which the State attains it and, hence, the common good.

This thesis starts with an overview of the historical record tied to the birth of a new nation studied by Alexis de Tocqueville and Henry Steele Commager. It singles out the works of Henry Nash Smith and Eugene D. Genovese for an understanding, respectively, of the "myth of the frontier" tied to the conquest of the American West and the "plantation myth" that sustained slavery in the American South. Both myths underlie the concept of hybridity or cross-cultural relations in America. This thesis is concerned with the representation or lack of representation of hybridity and the roles played by female characters in connection with the land in two seminal American novels and their film versions---James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, and Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind---and Alice Randall's rewriting of Mitchell's novel, The Wind Done Gone , as a point of contrast. Hybridity is represented in the mixed-race bodies of these characters.

The need for donor funding has increased significantly over the last decade. Without donor funding millions of people wouldn’t be alive today. Thanks either to research finding a cure, successful treatment, funds donated for food, aid toward building infrastructure, or giving people the opportunity to further their education. Donor funding thus facilitates a better future. A literature review was conducted to give background on the health sector and how these funds were distributed, ethical clearance, different types of reporting, the role project managers pays in a project and the sustainability of projects. Expenses in different countries were evaluated by gathering data from the internet, while two international funded projects are also used to state how funders divide their line items into different categories. The empirical study used a qualitative research approach by collecting and analysing data obtained from the MDG 2010 report and other freely available data on the web. The main findings from this thesis are: *The Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) influence donor funding as it gives donors a guide towards funding needs. Donors are also influenced by their own preferences or what poses a burden to them individually. *The different types of reporting required for funding received, delay a project and the bureaucratic structures thereof are a hindrance. *Ethical clearance plays a fundamental role in the outcome of a project, as without ethical clearance a project cannot commence. *The objectives of a project play a critical role when applying for funding. This can change the focus of a project. *Expenses differ from country to country and funders need to take this into account when giving funding to recipient countries. *Project Managers and community involvement plays a critical role in ensuring sustainability of projects. THE SUSTAINABILITY OF DONOR FUNDED PROJECTS IN THE HEALTH SECTOR *The MDG’s are not on track and aid are focus on singular goals instead of multiple goals, to ensure an overall improved result. There is a major gap between needed funds and given funds. A single injection of funds will not be the solution to our health problem; different sectors need to collaborate together as we are facing a multi-dimensional problem. Trade and reform must also form part of this aid, ensuring a sustainable progression in the life’s of people. Donor funded projects may have a sustainable future, when taking in account the abovementioned findings. With the world trend in reporting changing rapidly, cost and management accountants as well as financial accountants and project managers have to equip them to adhere to the new way of reporting, namely integrated and sustainability reporting. South Africa is way behind and needs to catch up fast if they want to stay competitive in the “global donor funding market”. The limitations in this study were that not all expenses were evaluated and only 15 countries were looked at. An indebt look was taken into Africa with the empirical review, while Asia is also combating poor health issues. Some African countries like Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe did not have sufficient data to compare with other countries. From the research conducted, the following topics were identified that require further research: *Why are most projects in Third World countries not sustainable? *What plans are put into action to ensure that the MDG goals are reached? *Investigate what works for First World countries health systems and consider how that can be applied to Third World countries to ensure that they also get the best health care available. *Do donors take into account the different costs of countries when allocating funding to that specific country? *Establishing models to evaluate the sustainability of pilot projects and normal projects. *Establishing a model on how to distribute donor funds across different needs and not only one specific need.

During the mid 1960s, record producers and jazz critics coined the phrase Sidewinder Syndrome to describe the funky style of music popularized through the success of Lee Morgan's solo release of "Sidewinder. The funky style, rooted in the heart of the hard bop period (1955-1965), united jazz, Latin influences, and popular black traditions such as gospel and urban blues. Lee Morgan (1938-1973), composer of "Sidewinder," and Richard "Blue" Mitchell (1930-1979) were two prolific trumpet artists from this time period who embraced the Sidewinder Syndrome, and as a result provided a rich improvisational vocabulary, as it pertains to trumpet performance practice. This study presents six annotated transcriptions from each artist focusing on elements of jazz vocabulary and solo construction. The study reveals vocabulary and solo construction preferences within the Sidewinder Syndrome. Results indicated the three most common harmonic generalization elements were digital patterns, change-running, and the bar-line shift. Complex harmonic generalization elements included bebop scale, 3-b9 movement, linear chromaticism, and tri-tone substitution / altered dominant. Vocal inflections derived from gospel music and urban blues were the half-valve, grace note, alternate fingerings, note bending, and fall. Bebop influenced articulation included upbeat-to-downbeat articulation and ghost note. Bebop influenced ornamentation included the two-sixteenth note ornament and the turn. Results suggest solo construction relied heavily upon the sequencing of rhythmic and melodic motives. Space was utilized for clarity, new concepts, and octave displacement. Developmental concepts included running eighth and sixteenth note lines. This study provides an opportunity for students of improvisation to isolate and study jazz vocabulary and solo construction of the Sidewinder Syndrome.

This thesis covers Lewis Grassic Gibbon/James Leslie Mitchell's treatment of race in its cultural, national and biological forms. It begins with Mitchell's idiosyncratic views on the nature of history and civilisation, which cut across race issues at several key points. Studying history involves noting the elimination or disappearance of certain races; modern civilisation classifies races more cold-bloodedly and dangerously than ever before; its present violent state suggests the possible end to all life on the planet (ch.1). It moves on to Mitchell's presentation, either negative or nostalgic, of his native Scotland (ch.2) and the more positive stance on his adopted England (ch.3) before a more general survey of his highly provocative views on a number of races and nations elsewhere (ch.4). It then investigates his two-pronged presentation of humankind as a violent species - this violence coming basically from the male - yet also as a species naturally wholesome and good (ch.5). It finally identifies a wish in Mitchell, expressed through certain author-surrogates, to escape involvement with humankind, stand aloof, and watch it as if in a laboratory (ch.6). Chapters 3, 5 and 6 refer frequently to H.G. Wells's influences on Mitchell. Mitchell is revealed as a rather less socio-politically progressive figure than he has generally been taken for, and a writer whose thoughts on race and culture require more careful interpretation than has been performed by Marxists of various shades.

Anyone who is familiar with Margaret Mitchell’s life and her novel, Gone with the Wind, should notice that Mitchell’s work in some fashion parallels events from her life. Exactly how and why these parallels function, however, has been the subject for much scholarly debate. In my thesis, I examine Mitchell’s biography to get closer to the truth of the events in her life up to the publication of her novel. I then synthesize this information with a side-by-side analysis of some important figures in Mitchell’s life and characters from her novel; from there, I provide a feminist critique of selected characters, relationships between those characters, and scenes from the novel. In particular, I focus upon Mitchell’s relationship with her mother, Maybelle, and how this relationship compares with Scarlett O’Hara’s relationship with her mother, Ellen.

The Mitchell Au-Cu-Ag-Mo porphyry deposit, hosted by Early Jurassic volcanosedimentary and intrusive rocks in the Stikine terrane of northwestern British Columbia, is considered the largest undeveloped gold resource in Canada. As of 2015 it held a resource of 1777 Mt at 0.61 g/t Au, 0.17% Cu, 3.1 g/t Ag, and 58 ppm Mo (0.5 g/t Au eqiv. cut-off; meas+ind). The calc-alkalic deposit is genetically related to multiple diorite intrusions (Sulphurets suite) that cut volcanosedimentary strata of the Stuhini Group (Upper Triassic) and Jack Formation (basal Hazelton Group, Lower Jurassic). Phase 1 plutons (U/Pb, zircon; 196 ±2.9 Ma and 192.2±2.8 Ma) host Stage 1 potassic and propylitic alteration, veins and copper-gold mineralization. A Phase 2 plug (189.9±2.8 Ma; U/Pb zircon) is central and temporally related to a molybdenum halo (190.3±0.8 Ma; Re-Os, Mo) that is accompanied by phyllic alteration (Stage 2). Phase 3 plutonism is temporally related to diatreme breccia, intrusion breccia dikes and Stage 3 massive pyrite veins and advanced argillic alteration. High-level, gold-rich veins comprise Stage 4. Three phases of progressive deformation related to the mid-Cretaceous Skeena fold and thrust belt structurally modify the Mitchell deposit. Deformation Phase 1 is characterized by a steep, easterly striking pervasive pressure solution cleavage (S₁) and steeply west-plunging buckle folds in veins (F₁); fold geometry and flattening degree are a function of alteration type. In rheologically weak alteration types a pressure solution cleavage is associated with loss of silica, mechanical remobilization of chalcopyrite-molybdenite, and passive enrichment of chalcopyrite-molybdenite-pyrite along the cleavage planes. Strain intensity (i.e., S₁ development) is heterogeneous and this greatly affects the shape of the orebody. In Deformation Phase 2, steeply north-plunging F₂ vein folds overprint S₁ and F₁. The Mitchell thrust fault (Deformation Phase 3) offsets the Snowfield deposit ~ 1600 m to the east-southeast and the Mitchell Basal shear zone displaces the Mitchell deposit from its core zone, located ~1-2 km to the west at a depth of ~ 1 km. It is speculated the Mitchell deposit was emplaced into a structurally influenced, north-trending Jurassic basin and subsidiary east-west structures controlled the intrusion, vein geometry, alteration and metal pattern trends.

Annotation:
The notion that we have entered a global age of human relations has been the driving force behind many of the most persuasive cultural inquiries published over the last few decades, including fictional ones, into the conditions of contemporary existence, perhaps the most prominent of these being Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri's Empire (2000). In the era of mass migrations, proliferating media technologies and the deterritorialised movements of labour and capital, it has become increasingly necessary to speak of identity and citizenship in terms of 'flows', 'routes' and 'networks' that cut across the traditional boundaries of the nation-state. Though it is through various cultural productions that such transformations are at once performed, symbolised and comprehended, discussions about how these changes have impacted on modes of literary representation have largely been framed by the older discourses of postmodernism and postcolonialism, which anticipate present circumstances while arguably offering rather limited perspectives on them. This text-focused thesis explores in detail the narrative strategies and thematic concerns of three British writers who have risen to prominence since 1990 - Lawrence Norfolk, Hari Kunzru and David Mitchell - whose work announces literary developments that may be attributed to the fluidity and multiplicity of millennial relations and the phenomenon of globalisation. Informed by broader debates about multinational capitalism, transnational culture, and the emergence of new cybernetic infrastructures, this research argues that recent novels such as Lempri6re's Dictionary (Lawrence Norfolk), Transmission (Hari Kunzru) and Ghostwritten (David Mitchell) demonstrate an aesthetic consciousness of new patterns of human Interaction and geo-historical interconnectedness that is substantially different from the conceptual coordinates mapped in the fictions of a previous generation. The work of these three important authors has yet to enter fully into the mainstream of critical discussion, and the present study represents the first sustained critical contextualisation of their fiction. Following an introductory chapter that, firstly, provides a wide-ranging analysis of globalisation understood as a constellation of multidimensional processes and, secondly, considers how these material transformations articulated themselves in the cultural context of Britain in the 1980s and '90's, this thesis engages in close readings of the selected authors' complex fictions over three extensive chapters.

The building of the major part of the Mitchell Library (1939 - 1942) resulted in four pairs of bronze entrance doors, three on the northern facade and one on the southern facade. The three pairs on the northern facade of the library are obvious to everyone entering the library from Shakespeare Place and are well documented. However very little has been written on the pair on the southern facade apart from brief mentions in two books of the State Library buildings, so few people know of their existence. Sadly the excellent bronze doors on the southern facade of the library cannot readily be opened and are largely hidden from view due to the 1987 construction of the Glass House skylight between the newly built main wing of the State Library of New South Wales and the Mitchell Library. These doors consist of six square panels featuring bas-reliefs of different early printers’ marks and two rectangular panels at the bottom with New South Wales wildflowers. Because the southern doors were constructed in 1942 as part of a building with neo-classical architecture they reflect the culture of the time and are an artistic, literary and cultural treasure of the State Library of New South Wales and are being neglected when they should be cherished. The three areas of research I have followed are the invention of printing in Europe including early printers’ marks, late 19th and early 20th century library building architecture, and bronze doors. These all intersect on the bronze southern doors of the Mitchell Library. I have followed the two main personalities in the production of these doors. Firstly the benefactor, Sir William Dixson, who donated money for the three northern doors in memory of David Scott Mitchell with sufficient residual funds for the southern doors. Secondly, 1 William Ifould, Principal Librarian of the Public Library of New South Wales 1912 - 1942, who was the driving force behind the construction of the main part of Mitchell Library during changing times with conflict between traditionalism and modernism. He was a confirmed traditionalist who selected the artists and images for all the bronze doors and personally designed the southern doors. In my conclusion I offer a resolution to the problem viewing these doors with a plan for the readers and visitors to the library to be able to see the heritage listed southern doors and understand their significance.

The purpose of this study was to understand and measure principal leadership practices and teacher morale as it relates to student achievement in Mitchell County at two elementary schools, four middle schools, and one high school. First, a review of the related literature attempted to define teacher morale as much as possible given that it is an ever-changing individual characteristic. Second, the researcher tried to understand teacher morale and distinguish between high and low elements and characteristics of teacher morale. Third, the researcher examined the difficult task of measuring the morale of teachers in public education today. Fourth, an attempt was made to understand what role school leaders play in the development of teacher morale and how their specific behavior affects the morale of teachers. Lastly, student achievement was reviewed using the North Carolina End-Of-Grade tests. All of these variables were examined to determine if there was a connection or pattern to high or low student achievement based on teacher morale. This quantitative study was conducted using a survey-design method. The Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was used to measure factors contributing to teacher morale. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) was chosen to measure leadership practices that best supports great accomplishments in organizations. The North Carolina End-Of-Grade/End-Of-Course tests were used to measure student achievement. Overall results for Mitchell County Schools showed that there was a moderately high level of teacher morale. Satisfaction with teaching led the way in contributing to higher morale whereas the issue of teacher salary was found to lower morale. School leaders in Mitchell County proved to inspire a common vision as well as encourage teaching from the heart more so than found in existing research. Teachers from two of the seven schools rated their principals higher in leadership practices than the principals themselves; this is contrary to presented research. Many significant relationships existed between perceived leadership practices and teacher morale factors. All factors of teacher morale as measured by the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire had a positive correlation with the End-Of-Grade/End-Of-Course test scores.

The United States Army activated the Aeronautical Division, United States Signal Corps, on August 1, 1907. The men of the Aeronautical Division faced hardships and challenges from the very beginning as they tried to build the nation’s first air force prior to World War I. The U.S. Army, the War Department, Congress, and even the American people, really did not know what aircraft could do beyond simple flight. American airmen tried to demonstrate what air power was capable of, but the response to their achievements never met their expectations. Using an abundance of primary and secondary sources on American air power, this dissertation demonstrates that airmen’s struggle for a separate service was not something that developed slowly over the course of decades. Instead, this dissertation shows that airmen wanted independence from the U.S. Army from the start. From their point of view, the U.S. Army, the War Department, and Congress never really appreciated or understood air power. As a result, airmen became more and more alienated with each passing year until they achieve want they wanted -- independence.

Margaret Mitchell’s one and only novel, Gone with the Wind, was an instant hit when it waspublished in 1936. The novel is a romantic tragedy that takes place in a very traditional society inthe state of Georgia in the United States before, during, and after the Civil War. Keeping the oldtraditions is one of the priorities for the Southerners, particularly the ones that have to do withgender roles. However, the war brings changes of which most prominent families highlydisapprove. A few seize the opportunities during Reconstruction, while most of them remain inpoverty in order to keep the old traditions. My essay will focus on the four main characters in thenovel, Scarlett O’Hara, Rhett Butler, Ashley Wilkes, and Melanie Hamilton. Rhett represents theNew South and is attracted to Scarlett who is a mixture of the old and the new. She is madly in lovewith Ashley, who represents the Old South. Ashley is attracted to Scarlett but choses to marryMelanie, who is more like him. The purpose of this essay is to look at gender roles and social norms in the novel, notjust in relation to individuals but also how society as a whole treats those who refuse to follow theunwritten rules. How does this affect the lives and relationships of the four main characters? Whatsocial norms define the society these characters live in, and what are their individual attitudes tothese norms? Southern society is secure as long as the established social norms are not challenged, and these include traditional gender roles. The characters in Gone with the Wind are heavilyinfluenced by gender roles and social norms, and some to such an extent that their conduct andreputations can matter more than the actual person. It is possible to rebel against the system only ifone has the self-sufficiency and financial means to do so, as is the case with Scarlett and Rhett. They break away from the traditional gender norms, but their freedom has serious consequences.Ashley Wilkes, on the other hand, has the financial means to succeed but he is so affected by hisrole as a perfect Southern gentleman that he dares not apply new ideas in his life in order to survivefinancially, and this makes him feel unfulfilled. His wife Melanie Hamilton fulfills her role as agreat lady, which means she is socially and financially dependent on her husband. In analyzing theconstraints and consequences of gender roles, I will make use of feminist theory, with particularfocus on Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of the Other and her definition of narcissism, and Hilary M.Lips’ explanation of social-cultural theories and prescriptive gender stereotypes. In Gone with theWind, traditional gender roles, like the old South, are imaginative, unattainable and ultimatelydestructive. The most conventional characters cannot fully attain or embody the gender roles, whilethe most non-conformist characters nevertheless long for them, and everyone suffers for it.
