To address the issue of hazardous missions, this article uses the framework of shifts in missionary emphasis: from cross-cultural to intra-cultural mission, from first-generation to second-generation mission, and from human-centered to Earth-centered mission. The helpful or harmful characteristics of missionaries are not just personal hut also structural, that is, inherent in the culture from which the missionaries originate. This article suggests that the three related shifts in missionary emphasis noted above reduce the hazards of Christian mission, but in turn introduce some new hazards.

This study discusses the importance of involving all congregation members in carrying out missions. The involvement of church members begins with the Christian family knowing the values of the mission. This is inseparable from how Christian leaders apply it in ministry. The purpose of the study was to explain the application of mission values in Christian families in Mentawai, by considering the condition of diversity that continues to grow in culture, religion, and tribe in Mentawai, West Sumatra. The method used is qualitative by collecting data from the literature. The results of the study found that the application of mission values in the Christian family can be made by being a bearer of good news, being a congregation of disciples, being a congregation that grows in teaching, and being a congregation that supports missions. The diversity of cultures, religions, and tribes in Mentawai can trigger the enthusiasm and persistence of the Church, both GKPM and other churches that serve there.

AbstractAlthough there is a large, sophisticated literature on gender and mission work, single women still remain on the periphery of those studies. Through the case of Martha L. Moors, a single American missionary working in Portuguese West Africa (Angola today) in the 1920s, this essay offers an examination of how the two identities of 'single woman' and 'missionary' affected mission culture and work. Single women occupied a tenuous position, as they were often called upon to instruct non-Christian women on the principles of Christian marriage and motherhood. Moors' writings allow for an intimate consideration of how single women fit into mission culture and their reflections of how they serve the missions. Single women had to support the missions in ways that exemplified Christian femininity while lacking the validity of being wives and mothers.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of mission statement contents and its function in guiding employee's behaviour from the organisational culture (OC) perspective. Design/methodology/approach – The research is based on a mixed method approach. The quantitative content analysis of mission statements was performed on a sample of 222 Slovenian companies. Mission statement's keywords were analysed with exploratory factor analysis. Advanced network analytic approaches such as PathFinder algorithm were utilised to obtain better understanding of interrelatedness of underlying mission components. Three interviews with the top managers were performed as well. Findings – The mission statement content analysis identified five associated organisations’ orientations: concern for stakeholders, orientation towards stability, orientation towards cooperation and innovation, and development and growth. The interviews confirm missions’ role in communicating the espoused or declared OC, although different approaches to achieve employees’ commitment to the organisation's mission can be identified in regard to the size of the organisation. Originality/value – The cultural approach to the analysis of mission statements confirms that the mission statements incorporate basic contents of OC. The methodology applied gives new possibilities in the research of OC perspective of strategic statements.

In his history of the Edinburgh 1910 World Missionary Conference, Brian Stanley suggests that contemporary use of “culture” in mission may be vulnerable to the same critique as was the use of “race” in the colonial missions. However, sensitivity to culture and context in postwar and postcolonial missiology has encouraged diversity, interculturality, and movements for greater equity. Drawing from contemporary missiology and critical race theory, this article asks whether attention to “culture” and “context” has mitigated racism in mission or tended to obscure it.

The early European presence in California and in the American Southwest in general is identified with missions. Although missions were equally important in Spanish Florida and at an earlier date, the average American does not associate missions with Florida or Georgia. Indeed, as David Hurst Thomas observed in a recent monograph on the archaeological exploration of a site of the Franciscan mission of Santa Catalina de Guale on Georgia's St. Catherines Island, the numerous missions of Spanish Florida have remained little known even in scholarly circles. And as Charles Hudson has noted, this ignorance or amnesia has extended to awareness of the native peoples who inhabited those Southeastern missions or were in contact with them, even though these aboriginal inhabitants of the Southeast “possessed the richest culture of any of the native people north of Mexico … by almost any measure.” Fortunately, as Thomas remarked in the above-mentioned monograph, “a new wave of interest in mission archaeology is sweeping the American Southeast.” This recent and ongoing work holds the promise of having a more lasting impact than its historical counterpart of a half-century or so ago in the work of Herbert E. Bolton, Fr. Maynard Geiger, OFM, Mary Ross, and John Tate Lanning. Over the fifty odd years since Lanning's Spanish Missions of Georgia appeared, historians and archaeologists have made significant contributions to knowledge about sites in Spanish Florida where missions or mission outstations and forts or European settlements were established. But to date no one has compiled a comprehensive listing from a historian's perspective of the mission sites among them to which one may turn for the total number of such establishments, their general location, time of foundation, length of occupation, moving, circumstances of their demise and the tribal affiliation of the natives whom they served. This catalog and its sketches attempt to meet that need.

Smither, Edward L. „Brazilian evangelical missions among Arabs : history, culture, practice, and theology“. Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25509.

Annotation:
The aim of this work is to tell part of the story of the Brazilian evangelical missions movement by focusing on the work and Brazilian evangelical transcultural workers serving in mission in the context of the Arab-Muslim world. These participants are members of a broader movement of more than 5000 Brazilian evangelicals serving around the world - an evangelical labor force large than that of England or Canada - which has grown significantly since 1976. In order to locate the work of Brazilian evangelicals in an Arab-Muslim context, it was important to first offer a historical narrative showing how Brazil has shifted in the twentieth century from being a “mission field” to being a base for sending missions. Relying on key historical literature, this has been accomplished first by recounting how Brazil was evangelized largely by North American missionaries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Building on this narrative, the argument has been made that while the Brazilian evangelical church does share common characteristics with North American and global evangelicalism, it has also begun to forge its own evangelical identity. One important part of this identity is its concrete participation in global mission efforts. As transcultural mission necessarily involves cultural adaption, forty-five past and present Brazilian evangelical workers were invited to participate in a collective case study and reflect upon their own “Brazilianness” and how they have adapted in the Arab world. The perspectives of ten Brazilian mission leaders have also been included. In this study, I have treated Brazil as an affinity bloc of cultures in which there is clear diversity as well as some elements of cohesiveness. I have approached the Arab world in the same way. Hence, the framework for discussing Brazilians in the Arab world has been to reflect upon two affinity blocs and to ask members of one group (Brazilians) to share their collective experiences living in a second group (the Arab world) specifically regarding seven aspects of culture that have clear missiological implications. They include: race, economics, time, communication, family, relationships, and spiritual worldview. After hearing these Brazilian voices, it has become evident, culturally, speaking that Brazilians are not Arabs and that Brazilians must surely work to adapt culturally. However, it also appears that there is generally less cultural distance between the Brazilians surveyed and their Arab contexts than what is normally experienced by Western missionaries in the Arab world. This study was also concerned with asking, how are Brazilian evangelicals approaching mission in the Arab-Muslim world? Following a collective case study methodology, this question was posed to individual Brazilians and teams, but also to Brazilian evangelical missions organizations working in the Arab world. While a number of themes (strategies and practices) emerged, it seems that Brazilians are particularly concerned about humanitarian work and personal evangelism and would regard these areas as strengths of their movement. On the other hand, Brazilian workers and mission leaders also identified the most apparent challenges in their work among Arab-Muslims. They included: a lack of Brazilian local church support for missionaries, deficiencies in language learning, lack of financial support, and difficulties faced by Brazilian women in Arab contexts. For each apparent difficulty, I have proposed some solutions based on the collective input of Brazilian voices. Finally, in this study, I have posed the question, how do Brazilians think theologically about mission? Also, how is this Brazilian missiology relevant to transcultural mission work in the Arab-Muslim world? While I have approached this question primarily through surveying the literature from Latin American and Brazilian theologians, I have also looked for missiological themes in the thoughts of Brazilian evangelical workers and through observing their concrete mission practices. From this, four theological themes have emerged that are descriptive of Brazilian missions. They include: that mission is holistic (missão integral); that mission is church-centered; that authentic mission originates from “below” or from a posture of vulnerability; and that one‘s missiology must be undergirded by an awareness of the spiritual world. In summary, through this work, I have have endeavored to tell part of the story of an emerging majority world missions movement by listening to the voices of Brazilian transcultural workers who serve in the Arab-Muslim world. The goal of this study is to inform the global church of this phenomenon in order that the global church would learn from the Brazilian experience as it moves forward in mission and missiological reflection. Secondly, my desire is to provide a framework of self-reflection for Brazilian evangelical missionaries and missions organizations serving in both the Arab-Muslim world but also in the entire world.

ABSTRACT ACADEMIC CULTURE, BUSINESS CULTURE, AND MEASURING ACHIEVEMENT DIFFERENCES: INTERNAL AUDITING VIEWS by Benjamin Sterling Roth This study explored whether university internal audit directors’ views of culture and measuring achievement differences between their institutions and a business were related to how they viewed internal auditing priorities and uses. The Carnegie Classification system’s 283 Doctorate-granting Universities were the target population. Directors for 144 institutions (51%) returned questionnaires providing their views of academic culture and measuring achievement differences; the importance of internal auditor attributes, and types, subject areas, and determinants of internal auditing work; and whether operational audits of research, teaching, and public service were appropriate. Data collected included directors’ age, gender, race and ethnicity, education, certifications, and work experience and information on their reporting officials, boards/audit committees, audit departments, and institutions. Chi-square tests of independence, p ≤ .05, determined statistically significant relationships, and Cramer’s V, effect size. Dichotomous categories of “businesslike” and “distinct” were used to label views from the university’s perspective. Fifty-six percent viewed university culture distinct; 65% viewed measuring achievement businesslike. Thirty-eight percent viewed both businesslike; 30%, both distinct; 26%, culture distinct and measuring achievement businesslike; and 6%, culture businesslike and measuring achievement distinct. Culture views were related to measuring achievement views with medium effect, and with large effect for respondent subsets, such as older (≥ 50 years) males, certified internal auditors (CIAs), and directors at schools with higher research funding and/or a medical school. Also, with small effects, a distinct culture view favored awareness of culture and missions; a businesslike culture view favored operational audits; and a businesslike measuring achievement view favored operational audits in research, teaching, and public service. Older males had the highest percentages viewing culture businesslike and both culture and measuring achievement businesslike. CIAs had highest percentages viewing culture distinct and both culture and measuring achievement distinct. With culture and measuring achievement views related, internal auditor awareness of university culture and missions might warrant greater emphasis. Businesslike views favoring operational audits might encourage management practices historically decried by scholars as ill-fitting an academy, or might conserve resources to make more available to enhance academic practices and outcomes.

AbstractOrganizational values, as the criteria that guide decision-making, play a central role in the implementation of management by missions (MBM). Most social organizations today develop a set of values. These sets of values are normally treated as fixed and even as untouchable. However, over time, some values change and evolve both in the organizational environment and within the organizations themselves. Some values may fall into the background, while others should come to the forefront. As a result, leaders need to adapt to these changes and create corporate cultures that best align with their corporate purpose over time. In this chapter, we propose a framework to help organizations create balanced sets of values in four categories: business, relational, development and contribution values.

We first make a brief review of the different types of leadership that have been proposed in the past: transactional, transformational and transcendental leadership. An analysis of the respective organizational histories, missions, and scholarly activity of the International Association for Cross-cultural Psychology (IACCP) and the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) indicates many points of shared values and actions, as well as some important differences. Both scholarly organizations developed out of a similar historical and cultural zeitgeist in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Our missions emphasize the role of culture/diversity in psychological phenomena, adopting an interdisciplinary orientation, the value of collaboration, the importance of research methods and ethics, and the value of action research. However, community psychology generally lacks an adequate treatment of cultural phenomena, while cross-cultural psychology often fails to draw on community and participatory methods useful for understanding culture in context. In this chapter, we examine these common roots and differences and then briefly present a study1 of intimate partner violence (IPV) in a community of Latinos in the United States that illustrates the benefits of an interdisciplinary, cultural community psychology. Finally, we propose several actions to develop further an interdisciplinary collaboration between the two fields.

The use of Constellations for weather science, security and disaster monitoring is a major challenge for space application services. Satellite to satellite communication using existing constellations has not been extensively explored yet. It can improve the communication times for small-satellite missions which have limited access to ground stations. Thus, a mission to demonstrate the feasibility of this link is required. Another element of interest in space application is Earth Observation, especially in the context of Climate Change. Gravimetry allows an understanding of mass transport in the Earth System through the remote sensing of the time variation of the Earth gravity field. CubeSats are low-cost small-scale and hence lower risk solutions to Earth Observation missions. University CubeSats have shown their success in demonstration and scientific missions, and have a great potential in providing students with practice and application on real space systems. In this context, the student associations ASTRE and SUPAERO CubeSat Club have joined in a CubeSat program called TOLOSAT, with the hope of demonstrating such technologies. Gathering 70 students from Toulouse, the team was split into subsystems in accordance with the concurrent engineering principles. The work performed followed recommendations from experts from the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) and the industry. The TOLOSAT payloads have to test and demonstrate new means of measuring gravity and addressing communication issues. Firstly, for the gravimetry mission, our approach relies solely on GNSS to compute the gravity field, avoiding expensive gravimeters. For the communication mission: the Iridium constellation will be used as an intermediate between the CubeSat and the ground station. Off-the-shelf components such as patch antennas are planned to prove their efficiency in orbit. This would improve the coverage and the communication window. The preliminary design was completed. TOLOSAT was designed as a 3-unit nanosatellite, on a 97.4° inclined, 500km high orbit. Margins were also ensured to allow a third payload to be defined in the future, that will be used for finance and partnerships. Detailed designs are still required, but the educational purposes have been fulfilled, in terms of discovery of the development of space missions as well as in the teamwork culture. The team is now moving on to a new phase, dedicated to a more detailed conception with an on-going focus on the introduction to students to technical - but not only - fields of knowledge applied to space systems

The voyage across the Mare Nostrum has had many meanings over the centuries: from the devotional purposes predominant in the pilgrimages of the Middle Ages, from the commercial exchanges that saw the establishment of merchant colonies in the main cities and harbour ports, to the movement of armies during the crusades and the diplomatic missions of ambassadors, nobles and knights during the Renaissance. From the 15th century onwards, relations between Italian courts and Mediterranean countries were not limited to mercantile aspects: scholars, clergymen and men of culture, driven by the Renaissance season and the rediscovery of the classical world, visited the Holy Land. Renaissance travellers of Franco-Renaissance culture left some of the most interesting depictions of the cities they visited in their diaries. The Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam published in 1486 by Bernhard von Breydenbach, canon of Mainz, represents one of the main models of an itinerary in the Holy Land accompanied by some of the greatest expressions of the cartographic culture of the end of the century.

As young engineers progress in their careers, they begin to understand that there is far more to being an outstanding engineer than they might have thought during their days as an undergraduate. In fact, some of the things they need to know weren’t necessarily learned in school. And this is understandable, given the relatively short time spent in school and the significant differences between the missions of academe and industry/government. This paper focuses on twelve vital aspects in engineering that are usually learned after graduation but can make the difference between success and failure in one’s engineering career. To succeed, engineers must: learn to be business oriented; expect tough, multi-disciplinary problems; learn to work and network in the new multi-cultural and multi-national environment; understand the differences between academe and industry; learn to differentiate all over again; understand the values and culture of their particular company or organization; be open to ideas from everywhere; have unyielding integrity; make their manager a success; support their university and technical society; have fun; and most importantly, manage their careers. Each of these aspects is discussed in detail.

Spreading the culture of data as a means of understanding and evaluating reality, and of making informed decisions, is one of the missions of Istat, the Italian National Institute of Statistics. Istat promotes statistical literacy also for non-professional audiences. Therefore, researchers’ efforts are aimed at finding appealing proposals to emphasize the importance of having statistical skills in every-day life. Recently, Istat created “Statistica enigmistica”: a puzzle magazine designed to play with concepts, definitions and data, and to encourage the use of the cognitive tools of Statistics when observing and comprehending society. The games have been designed to involve a wide audience, ranging from children to adults. The topics have been selected to offer an overview of the main statistical data regarding Italian society, and to give useful references for further insights.

Culture enables sustainable development, it is a driver and enabler of sustainable development. In the context of globalization, cultural exchanges are increasing, the role of language as a carrier of culture is more and more evident. Many countries even include it in the national strategy, and it became an important government action. Confucius Institute is an important platform for Sino-foreign cultural exchanges and mutual learning. And the same of the other cultural institutes which have been mentioned in this paper. They are all playing a role of the international community civilization messenger, they are bridges to connect the native countries and abroad, they are Culture Ambassadors who help the comprehension and cooperation among people and countries. Cultural institutes are one of the most relevant examples in the attempt to promote and connect cultures, which have been set up on a similar, though not identical pattern, in view of creating a stronger sense of self-identity and contributing to an integration of diversity by mutually accepted knowledge and dialogue. Through the literature research method and the comparative method, this article illustrates the important role played by cultural institutions in the world. Also by the comparative study of the main cultural institutions in the world in terms of vision, mission, aims, the examination assessment systems, financial resources, management and so on, the article provides a clearer reference for the running of cultural institutions.

How can the UN optimise the contributions that locally recruited ‘national staff’ make to peacekeeping operations? Especially given intense pressure to reduce costs through ‘lighter footprints’, peacekeeping operations need to mobilise the full potential of all their personnel to accomplish mandated tasks. This includes civilian staff, of whom 61% are national staff. Missions depend on national staff both for cost savings (since national staff typically earn less than international staff) and for local expertise and access. Yet tensions arising from status inequalities between national and international staff pose significant risks to individual staff performance and to unit effectiveness. Hostile mission environments and downsizing trends exacerbate these tensions. Drawing on extensive interviews in four UN peacekeeping operations, this brief recommends that missions: Counter the culture of inequality between national and international staff by upholding formal rank equivalents, reconsidering restrictions on some unit leadership positions, avoiding generalisations about individuals based on their staff category, and revisiting differential administrative policies. Visibly invest in national staff security by reviewing safety and security protocols for national staff, improving communication about protection policies, and improving mechanisms for national staff to report protection concerns. Carefully manage downsizing by instituting a transparent downsizing process, ensuring fairness across staff categories, working to retain relevant existing staff throughout mission drawdown, and placing greater emphasis on career management and employment transitions.

Main objectives of this article are changes in the programming principles of the “Suspilne Culture” TV channel, the peculiarities of the program content in the period 2020-2022, as well as potential for further channel development from the content perspective. Methodology of the analysis includes processing primary sources of information, synthesis, induction and deduction, problem-thematic analysis of television programs. Results. During 2017-2021, the specialized public channel about culture increased the number of its own programs, and the ratings of the channel increased. “UA: Culture” produced their own daily information program and several analytical programs about various types of art. Although even now, a significant part of the channel content consists of not relevant and not adapted for the Ukrainian audience purchased serials and educational cycles. After analyzing “Suspilne Culture” TV channel program grid for October 3-7, 2022, significant part of not typical for declared program policy content was discovered. During the present period only 2 programs corresponded to the specifics of the channel and were developed by “Suspilne” production. Conclusions. In general, thematic blocks such as cultural policy of Ukraine and institutions, religious practices, economy of creative industries and representation of Ukrainian culture in the world are not broadcasted. Significance. The conducted research allowed us to actualize the need for a scientific approach to the content and programming policy of the “Suspilne Culture” TV channel. The collected material gives reasons to testify that the mission of the public channel and the declared program principles are implemented only partially. The channel lacks in-depth analytics on a whole range of current cultural issues. The share of self-produced programs is minimal. Instead, purchased content often does not represent the specifics of the channel and does not fulfill the mission of the public broadcaster. The channel program managers should focus on the change in cultural discourse that has been taking place since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. In battles, our army and people defend, first of all, our right to own identity, our right on culture and own voice to tell the world about ourselves. The air of the TV channel “Suspilne Culture” should be filled with exactly such ideas. Keywords: culture; public television; television content; journalism of the culture.

Throughout the 20th century, numerous dams were built to take advantage of lakes and rivers for energy production. In Albania, the development of the hydroelectric industry led to profound changes in the physical environment. While the impact on landscapes is clearly visible, the effect on cultural heritage is less well understood. To that end, the current research program of the archaeological mission in northern Albania’s Lower Drin Valley aims to document and develop a methodology adapted to this specific context. The case study is the city of Sardë-Shurdhah, located in the Vau i Dejës reservoir.
