Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe review of the scholarly publications by Dainora Pociūtė „Reformation and the Development of the Confessional Thought in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania“, which has been submitted for the habilitation procedure, discusses the monograph of the said author titled Rebellious Cathedrals. Early Reformation and the contacts between Lithuanian and Italian Evangelicals (2008) as well as her various scholarly papers on the topic of Reformation and Protestant literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). The main subject of her study deals with the cultural processes of the early Reformation of GDL (the first two decades of the Reformation); however some aspects of the later development of Protestant literature and culture at the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century have also been taken into consideration. This interdisciplinary research integrates the issues and concerns of the history of culture, churches, confessions and literature of GDL. The main issues of the research are: the beginning of the Reformation in Lithuania and the reconstruction of the intellectual biography of Abraomas Kulvietis (Abraham Culvensis Gynvilionis), the pioneer of Lithuanian Evangelical thought; the two early Lithuanian confessions of Evangelical faith: Confessio fidei by Culvensis (1543) and Radziwiłł the Black’s answer to the Papal Nuncio Aloisio Lippomano (Duae epistolae, 1556); the links between Lithuanian and Italian Evangelicals and the role of the Italians in... Der volle Inhalt der QuelleRussia of the Alexanders and the Nicolays. Between liberalism and reaction. Reforms and attempts to reform in the Russian Empire SUMMARY The aim of the dissertation is to present the reforms carried out in the so-called Alexandrers and the Nicolays period in a coherent and comprehensive manner, presenting the initial state that existed at the beginning of the nineteenth century of the imperial Russia. The developed and proposed concepts of reforms, the attempts to introduce them and the reforms provided have been presented in a chronological and problematic way. An attempt was made to explain the reasons for the failure of the changes that the Russian Empire needed. The work belongs to the discipline of the history of political and legal doctrines, with particular emphasis on the political system and the Russian law. The dissertation analyzes in the context of reform the reign of Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II. The murder of Emperor Paul I and the taking of the throne in St. Petersburg by his son Alexander I were accepted as the initial event. The February Revolution and the subsequent abdication of Emperor Nicholas II as well as the end of the Romanovs dynasty in the Russian Empire were adopted as the final censorship. The object of research is not in any way international politics, wars conducted by the Russian Empire, nor the personal life of the reigning. The focus was on systemic and organizational issues, social and partly related economic aspects of the functioning of the state. As the main reason for the failure of reforms aimed at modernization and, in the long term, saving the Russian Empire from collapse, a controversial thesis was raised that in particular led to an unsolvable dispute between opponents of any change of reactionaries and those seeking change, but not always consistent with the Russian specificity of liberals and moderate conservatives in the middle of the dispute, supporters of evolutionary changes, in line with the Russian tradition. In addition, we had to do with the existence of a revolutionary camp, which is beyond the aforementioned political system, striving to completely destroy the existing socio-political order. This insoluble dispute caused by stubbornness and conviction about its infallibility of the indicated political and ideological groups in the end led to the failure of reforms and the Russian Empire to disaster. The work consists of an introduction, five chapters and the conclusion. The first chapter "The structure of central authorities" presents the phenomenon of self-righteousness, an unsuccessful attempt to reform the state prepared by Speransky, concepts of Decembrist reforms, reform of Alexander II and withdrawn reforms of his son Alexander III, i.e. counter-reforms. The end of the chapter is devoted to discussing the changes that took place in the Russian Empire following the revolution of 1905, the announcement of the October Manifesto, a new edition of the Basic Laws, the creation of the State Duma, the practice of constitutionalism and the fall of the monarchy. In the second chapter, "The structure of local authorities", the competences of the governors, general governors and the analysis of the institution of the lands (zemstva) were analysed. Chapter three "Russian society - attempts of socio-economic reforms" consists of three parts. The first one presents the legal position of serfs and state peasants, shows numerous attempts to change the political position of the peasant population, culminating in the appropriation of Alexander II's alienation and the elimination of the obshchina (clutches) and mir (peace) by Stolypin. The second part presents the legal situation of the urban part of the population of the Empire, and the third shows the functioning of universities and colleges in Russia. The fourth chapter, Codification of Law and Judicial Reform, shows the problem of the codification of laws in the Russian Empire in the first half of the nineteenth century and the reform of the judiciary and related institutions in 1864. The fifth chapter of the "People of Russia and Petersburg" is devoted to the Grand Duchy of Finland, the Kingdom of Poland and the Jewish population living in the Russian Empire. The sphere of independence and autonomy of these territorial and ethnic objects from Saint Petersburg has been shown there. While writing the dissertation, the principle of using and analyzing the largest number of book publications and scientific articles published in a Polish language was guided. In addition, there are references to selected books in English and Russian languages. Due to the limited ability of the writer, in particular, the foreign archival query was abandoned.

W nawiązaniu do renesansowego zwrotu ad fontes w Rozdziale I rozważam humanistyczną recepcję antyku, przede wszystkim greckiego. Tekst przekładu jest analizowany według zasad wypracowanych w badaniach kontrastywnych nad tłumaczeniami renesansowymi (W. Olszaniec, E. Sironen) i nad tekstami dwujęzycznymi z późnego antyku (R. Ferri). Korzystając z tych metod, zestawiłem tekst źródłowy i tekst docelowy, uwydatniając różnice i podobieństwa w strukturach obydwu tekstów i badając proces translatorski. W komentarzu zamieszczonym po każdej partii tekstu odnotowuję cechy graficzno-fonetyczne, morfologiczne, składniowe i leksykalne. Analiza dała interesujące wyniki związane z metodą i wyborami przekładowymi, zwłaszcza leksykalnymi, lecz także dotyczące poziomu znajomości greki w akademickim Krakowie u schyłku Renesansu.
The main subject of my PhD thesis is related to Humanist Greek, with special regard to 17th century in Poland. Humanist Greek as a definition is generally described as a literary movement of erudites writing and speaking Old Greek, which spread throughout Europe from the end of 14th till 18th century. It can be considered as a cultural phenomenon beginning in Italy and later involving the central regions of Europe, as well as the Nordic countries. More specifically, my dissertation presents a Greek Humanistic translation of the famous oration "Pro Archia poeta" by Cicero, made by Polish learned Nicolaus Zoravius (Mikołaj Żórawski) and printed in 1632 in Cracow. The dissertation contains an introduction, two main chapters, a conclusion, a bibliography and two appendices. In the introduction I describe the state of the art, the aims and the methods of my research. The first chapter attempts to give an overview to the broad topic of Humanistic reception of the antiquity. It especially concentrates on the most important moments of the revival of the Hellenic studies in Western Europe, after their general decay during the Middle Ages. This part deals mainly with the following matters: the contacts between the Italian Renaissance courts and the Byzantine scholars who made possible to learn Greek. The next part focuses on the topic of Humanistic translations. Translating from Greek into Latin became a common and appreciated practice, aiming at making new acquired books from the Eastern monasteries and libraries accessible to non-Greek readers. Moreover, original Latin texts were also occasionally converted into Greek by Byzantine scholars who wanted to learn Latin, as well as by teachers and their students. This aspect, to which belongs the subject of my study, is by the way rarer and mostly fulfilling didactic needs. The next part is dedicated to the study of Greek in 16th and 17th centuries Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, with special attention to the Cracow milieu and its best renowned exponents. There is an attempt to introduce the most read and translated ancient authors and to describe the methods of teaching Greek. The erudite literature (mostly poetic) written by Polish Hellenists in Ancient Greek is eventually mentioned. Biographical information about the author of the Greek translation and the context in which the text was developed are given in the next section. Some hypotheses on what could be the reason for the choice of such a work are also taken into account. In the second chapter, the focus is put on the Greek text. An in-depth linguistic analysis is conducted by comparing the original text to the translated one (according to the studies by W. Olszaniec, M. Cortesi, R. Ferri). The method of combining contrastively the texts, fragment by fragment, is meant to evidence differences and similarities between the versions and to understand the translation processes that were involved. In the comments following every excerpt of text, I observe the morphological features, the syntactical structures and vocabulary. The analysis brought to light a number of interesting results, showing the peculiarities of Zoravius’ grammatical and stylistic choices. For a more comprehensible scrutiny of this outcome, in the next part the most valuable linguistic facts are displayed in a schematic way. The collected material allows to discuss some conclusions in the last part, about the quality of the translation and the lexicograpgic tools (dictionaries and lexica) that seem to have been used by Zoravius. Few last recommendations are added on the need for deeper investigation of other contemporary Humanist Greek texts from a linguistic point of view, and for promoting collaboration with other scholars to create a lexical database. It has been provided an implementation in Appendix 1 with a Latin-Greek glossary with the terms of the oration and their Greek counterparts, and the photographic reproduction of part of the old book in Appendix 2.
