In this essay I examine Michelle Paver’s 2010 novel Dark Matter, a ghost story, for how her use of the gothic and horror contributes to undermining pastoral and romantic fantasies about the Arctic. Drawing on the history of whale, walrus, and seal hunting in Svalbard, the site of the novel’s 1937 scientific expedition, and my own experience there, I look at the tension Paver creates between the beauty of the Svalbard environment and its long history as a location for human violence against nonhuman animals. I suggest that, through the figure of the gengånger, or “one who walks again,” and the built environment and relics in Svalbard, Paver works to transmit both the violence of harvesting marine mammals and the violence men perpetrate against each other in the name of resource extraction. In this essay I engage in dialogue with recent environmental humanities work on ecophobia, dark ecologies, and the ecocritical uses of fear, and argue for the consideration of the ghost story, a genre little studied by ecocritics. Through highlighting the novel’s focus on violence linked to extractive practices, I suggest, finally, that Dark Matter performs two important functions: it records past inhuman ecologies and it opens out onto a reading of contemporary Arctic geopolitics. Resumen Este ensayo analiza cómo el uso de narrativas góticas y de terror en la novela de Michelle Paver Dark Matter (La materia oscura, 2010), un cuento de fantasmas, debilita las fantasías bucólicas y románticas del Ártico. Recurriendo a la historia de la caza de ballenas, morsas y focas en Svalbard, el emplazamiento de la expedición científica de 1937 de la novela, así como mi propia experiencia allí, analizo la tensión creada por Paver entre la belleza del medio ambiente de Svalbard y su larga historia como lugar de violencia humana contra animales no-humano. AbstractJohn Henry Michell (1863–1940) published scientific papers only between 1890 and 1902, but included in his 23 papers from that short but productive period are some of the most important contributions ever made by an Australian mathematician. In this article I shall concentrate on the extraordinary 1898 paper “The wave resistance of a ship” Phil. Mag.(5) 45, 106–123. There are many reasons why this paper was an astounding achievement, but perhaps the most remarkable is that the resulting formula has not been improved upon to this day. In the computer age, many efforts have been made to do so, but with little success so far. The formula itself involves a triple integral of an integrand constructed from the offset data for the ship's hull, and even the task of evaluating this triple integral is not a trivial one on today's computers; another reason for admiration of Michell's own heroic hand-calculated numerical work in the 1890's. Lack of a routine algorithm for Michell's integral has inhibited its use by naval architects and ship hydrodynamic laboratories, and there has been a tendency for it to receive a bad press based on unfair comparisons, e.g. comparison of model experiments (themselves often suspect) with inaccurate computations or computations for the wrong hull, etc. The original integral is in fact quite reasonable as an engineering tool, and some new results confirming this are shown. Improvement beyond Michell is however needed in some important speed ranges, and indications are given of recent approaches that may be promising.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Michelle Walker. Design/methodology/approach In this single case study, Michelle gives a short background to the development of her depression and is then interviewed by Jerome. Findings Michelle sets out the reasons she developed depression. These map onto the research conducted by Brown and Harris some 50 years ago, showing how social factors can create a vulnerability to develop depression. Research limitations/implications Single case studies provide us with one person’s narrative. That narrative is, however, unique and can often offer us insights that are lost in large statistical surveys. Practical implications Michelle found that the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) approach really helped her. However, she should never have had to wait as long as she did for that help. Mental health services must respond quickly, even if only to offer a triage assessment. Social implications Brown and Harris identified four key vulnerability factors for depression in women. Michelle met three of these. How many other women are in a similar situation and are suffering in silence? Originality/value We can learn a lot from the factors that helped Michelle recover from her depressive episode: medication, CBT, the support of her mother, education, finding her soulmate and, although she does not say it, her own rugged determination and personal resilience.

Michell structure is well known among tensegrity structures due to its optimization form and minimum mass of the structure. Michell had adopted this idea from the results of James C Maxwell's research on truss design. This paper presents the basic mathematical model of Michell structure based on complexity order q=2 in the two-dimensional coordinate system. This mathematical model imparts the analysis of all nodes and all members of Michell structure and investigates their position to construct a stable Michell structure. This basic mathematical model of Michell structure of complexity order q=2 can be used as a foundation to develop the Michell structure of high complexity orders. Furthermore, the force density in each member of the structure has been studied. An expression to calculate the minimum mass of structure has been defined at the end of this paper, which is the most important factor to construct any kind of tensegrity structure.

El siguiente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar de manera comparativa los proyectos para regular las migraciones en Chile de los Gobiernos de Michelle Bachelet y Sebastián Piñera. Se argumenta que ambos comparten un rasgo común: pese a contener elementos que se basan en la promoción de derechos, mantienen características que se corresponden con una lógica de control. Se resume el fenómeno chileno de la inmigración, que motiva a crear una normativa que reemplace a la vigente; se analiza la actual Ley de Extranjería y se establece un marco comparativo que dirime las particularidades de las propuestas de Ley Migratoria hechas por los Gobiernos de Michelle Bachelet y Sebastián Piñera. Abstract This paper aims to analyze, in a comparative perspective, the projects to regulate migrations in Chile presented by the governments of Michelle Bachelet and Sebastian Piñera. It is argued that both share a common feature: despite having elements based on the promotion of rights, they maintain traits that correspond to a control logic. We summarize the Chilean phenomenon of immigration that motivates the creation of a new regulation, analyze the present law and, finally, establish a comparative framework that addresses the particularities of the proposed immigration laws made by the Michelle Bachelet and Sebastian Piñera governments.

This paper aims to examine the stylistic effect of the mood features in Michelle Obama’s final address to the Americans. Anchored on Systemic Functional Linguistics and Discourse Stylistics, it basically focuses on the mood structures and the modality types registered in the speech. The findings disclose that the then U.S. first lady relies more on declarative mood and deontic modality to convey her message. The study thus infers that in her final message to her country citizens, Michelle Obama concentrates on action clauses and behaves as advisor towards women and men, as well as young and adults.

AbstractAnalytical closed-form solution to the stress distribution associated with a hole in finite plates subjected to tension has not been obtained yet. Wherefore, a method developed in this paper is based on a Beltrami-Michell methodology analyzing the Kirsch's problem under finite dimensions conditions of both plane stress and plane strain. This aimed ability is achieved by combining the Beltrami-Michell plane equations, isochromatic information on the boundaries only; and the finite difference method into an effectual hybrid method for analyzing rectangular plates of finite width with circular holes. Furthermore, the Beltrami-Michell methodology suggested may be applied on other plate and cut-out forms.

AbstractIn this paper, we study if the leading French gastronomic guidebook, the “Guide Rouge Michelin,” only rates the quality of food, as it claims, or if it also considers environmental variables when attributing stars. We then check how Michelin ratings affect the market, and more specifically, the price charged by restaurants. Using some simple econometric techniques, we find that a small improvement in environment boosts the probability of receiving Michelin stars. Since we also find that a Michelin star is associated to a high price premium stuck (independently of the quality of food), we conclude that expertise induces distortions in the market (JEL classification: D4, L15, L66).

Each presidential candidate in modern political campaigns in the United States needs to have a spouse behind their back. The involvement of recent candidates’ spouses like Michelle Obama and Melania Trump provides researchers with a fresh picture of how a future first lady should or should not behave during campaigning. The interesting matter would be in this article to compare those two candidates’ spouses. Their activities and behavior during their first presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2016 will show the differences in Democratic and Republican form of campaigning. The study aims to observe certain regularity in the treatment of spouses during presidential campaigns in the United States. Its goal is to answer what kind of future presidential spousal behavior during campaign is more desirable in order to achieve as many votes as possible. The paper is based on qualitative analysis of already existing data compiled during both elections, as well as critical reading of the literature of the subject. To elaborate, the author will mostly compare the political positions of those two future first ladies – Michelle Obama and Melania Trump – during the mentioned campaigning periods, and also by statistics relating to their presence in media and public appearances.

God, the creator of the whole world, creates nature as well as man. He then delivers the nature in the hands of man with a hope that man gives priority to protect his creation. Nature is a mother, nurturer, doctor, teacher and entertainer. It is filled with adventures, amusements, beauty and sometimes even danger. There is a balance within the ecosystem to enjoy the benefits of mutual co-existence. When this balance is maintained, there blooms peace and happiness. But if any one of it tries to dominate, there would be great tragedy. Nature is a best healer in every situations of human life. Though selfishness leads the man to destroy the nature, there are few people who are able to understand the importance of nature. There is a deep relationship between the man and nature. So, it is necessary to look at the relationship between the nature and the man in Corasanti’s The Almond Tree.

The OpenStreetMap (OSM) database includes original items very useful for geographical analysis and for creating thematic maps. Contributors record in the open database various themes regarding amenities, leisure, transports, buildings and boundaries. The Michelin mapping department develops map prototypes to test the feasibility of mapping based on OSM. To translate the OSM database structure into a database structure fitted with Michelin graphic guidelines a research project is in development. It aims at defining the right structure for the Michelin uses. The research project relies on the analysis of semantic and geometric heterogeneities in OSM data. In that order, Michelin implements methods to transform the input geographical database into a cartographic image dedicated for specific uses (routing and tourist maps). The paper focuses on the mapping tools available to produce a personalised spatial database. Based on processed data, paper and Web maps can be displayed. Two prototypes are described in this article: a vector tile web map and a mapping method to produce paper maps on a regional scale. The vector tile mapping method offers an easy navigation within the map and within graphic and thematic guide- lines. Paper maps can be partly automatically drawn. The drawing automation and data management are part of the mapping creation as well as the final hand-drawing phase. Both prototypes have been set up using the OSM technical ecosystem.

PurposeThe aim of this paper to shed light on the strategies adopted by chefs and to identify the most successful in terms of Michelin rating and profitability.Design/methodology/approachIn‐depth exploratory interviews with 20 great chefs located in France, Belgium, the UK and Switzerland having gained two or three Michelin stars over the last ten years.FindingsChefs use three different strategies for revenue‐generation: core business, full diversification and partial diversification. The reasoning behind the choice of strategy varies between two‐ and three‐star restaurants. The first strategy seems to lead to higher Michelin star ratings, and strategy, the second seems superior in terms of profitability. The third strategy yields inferior results, but is less risky.Research limitations/implicationsThe observations are constrained to “recently successful” restaurants, and hence may not be applicable to longer‐standing restaurants.Practical implicationsConcentrating on the core business leads to higher star rating, but lower profitability. Full diversification increases profitability but can jeopardize Michelin rating. The middle‐of‐the‐road approach seems inferior in any case.Originality/valueTo this day, little research has been conducted on the way in which great chefs having two or three stars in the famed Michelin Red Guide run their businesses. In particular, very little is known about their revenue‐generating strategies: what options are available and which revenue models are the “best”. This paper is exploratory in nature and aims to inform further research about luxury restaurants.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine aspects of the contemporary relevance of the Michelin Guide as efforts are made to extend its reach in Asia. The focus is on recent endeavours by the producers of the restaurant guide to represent local conditions by acknowledging the importance of street food and hawkers. Design/methodology/approach The methodology is that of a case study based on analysis of published material about the inaugural Singapore Michelin Guide and its consequences. Findings The Michelin Guide confronts challenges in retaining its authority and establishing itself in new Asian locations. The Singapore edition indicates attempts at responsiveness to distinctive circumstances through the recognition of street food and hawkers, but questions can be raised about the appropriateness of their inclusion and rating. Research limitations/implications Despite the absence of primary data, important topics about food and dining landscapes and modes of restaurant reviewing and grading are explored. A research agenda for the future is also proposed. Practical implications Attention is given to the impacts of the guide for individual enterprises, suggesting positive and negative outcomes of endorsement. Social implications Findings enhance understanding of the place of food and dining within societies and the influence of restaurant guides. Originality/value The paper offers an Asian perspective on and fresh insights into the role of local food cultures as well as the meanings and functions of the Michelin Guide.

In so doing, we aim to explore the health-related experiences of diverse young people, at the intersection of gender sexuality, place and class, as well and ethnicity and culture. We focus here on four specific methodological tensions. We employ Michelle Fine’s notion of ‘working the hyphen’ to explore tensions of decolonising-recolonising; collaborating-co-constructing; interactive-participatory approaches; being critical-being a listener in research.

It is very important for researching the growth and cultivation of plants that real-time monitoring of photosynthetic physiology & environmental parameters and analysis of relationship between these parameters. In this paper, an indoor cultivated Michelia alba monitoring system was built, which could continuously monitor leaf's CO2 exchange rate, transpiration rate, air temperature and humidity, soil moisture, photosynthetically active radiation and other parameters in real time, and could also analyze the relationship between the photosynthetic physiological parameters and environmental parameters. The results show that the diurnal variation of indoor cultivated Michelia alba leaf's CO2 exchange rate presents a bimodal pattern, which shows a midday depression. The diurnal variation of photosynthetically active radiation presents a single pattern. The diurnal variation of air humidity presents a “ S ” pattern, but the overall variation is little. The environmental factors that influenced the Michelia alba photosynthetic physiological characteristics most greatly are the photosynthetically active radiation and temperature.

Here we describe the development of a humidity-responsive sheet of paper that is derived solely from natural pollen. Adaptive soft material components of the paper exhibit diverse and well-integrated responses to humidity that promote shape reconfiguration, actuation, and locomotion. This mechanically versatile and nonallergenic paper can generate a cyclically high contractile stress upon water absorption and desorption, and the rapid exchange of water drives locomotion due to hydrodynamic effects. Such dynamic behavior can be finely tuned by adjusting the structure and properties of the paper, including thickness, surface roughness, and processing conditions, analogous to those of classical soapmaking. We demonstrate that humidity-responsive paper-like actuators can mimic the blooming of the Michelia flower and perform self-propelled motion. Harnessing the material properties of bioinspired systems such as pollen paper opens the door to a wide range of sustainable, eco-friendly, and biocompatible material innovation platforms for applications in sensing, actuation, and locomotion.

Topology optimization is a dynamically developing area of industrial engineering. One of the optimization tasks is to create new part shapes, while maintaining the highest possible stiffness and reliability and minimizing weight. Thanks to computer technology and 3D printers, this path of development is becoming more and more topical. Two optimization conditions are often used in topology optimization. The first is to achieve the highest possible structure stiffness. The second is to reduce the total weight of the structure. These conditions do not have a direct effect on the number of elements in the resulting structure. This paper proposes a geometric method that modifies topological structures in terms of the number of truss elements but is not based on the optimization conditions. The method is based on natural patterns and further streamlines the optimization strategies used so far. The method’s efficiency is shown on an ideal Michell truss.

The article aims to show the main aspects of Michel de Montaigne’s philosophy of man, exposing the existential themes presented in it. The paper presents Montaigne’s critique of speculative (academic) philosophy, his reluctance to construct a philosophical system, to describe and explain human life experience as a whole. The article emphasizes that the French philosopher appears as a defender of religious tolerance, a spokesman of dialogue and cultural relativism, and also – considering the existential themes of his work (the problem of loneliness, moral values or art of living) – that he may be considered a pioneer of existential philosophy.

This paper intends to undergo a comparative study on George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda (1876) and Sally Rooney’s Normal People (2018). The nature friendships the characters display in the aforementioned novels are of various attributes. Principles of religious, economical, racial, and societal heritage come together to delineate the relationship the four characters experience and brandish. The theme of power struggle in interpersonal relationships and the related parameters in play will be discussed through the ideas of Michelle Foucault, Luce Irigaray, Emmanuel Levinas, Frank Lovett, Jacques Derrida, and Aristotle. Among the defining factors to be tended to, vulnerability, the element of time –futurity-, death, and the approach towards “the other” are dominant. An almost two century-interval between the two literary works has marked a tremendous difference in the attitude of the protagonists towards friendship and conversion. The paper attempts to explore the inevitable factors, defining a friendship, the constituents empowering it along with those reducing it to an entity of its own negation.

This paper explores the recent social phenomenon of the confrontation by critics of government officials while they are out in public, yet engaged in “private” activities, e.g. eating dinner at a restaurant, shopping in a bookstore, or getting into their cars. This paper argues that such confrontations are a symptom of the lack of trust brought on by the absence of shared social values that results in toxic forms of public discourse, the blurring of the classical liberal distinction between the public and the private realms, and the inability to hold one another responsible for the violation of self-avowed moral norms. Implicit in this argument is the conclusion that such confrontations are ineffective at best. Some have suggested more physical intermingling among people who hold conflicting political views in order to establish such trust (Haidt, Wilk). In the absence of such opportunities for intermingling, sharing our value-laden personal stories with each other, in the spirit and style of Michelle Obama’s memoir Becoming, might help to create tolerance and trust among those with differing political perspectives.
