In this essay I examine Michelle Paver’s 2010 novel Dark Matter, a ghost story, for how her use of the gothic and horror contributes to undermining pastoral and romantic fantasies about the Arctic. Drawing on the history of whale, walrus, and seal hunting in Svalbard, the site of the novel’s 1937 scientific expedition, and my own experience there, I look at the tension Paver creates between the beauty of the Svalbard environment and its long history as a location for human violence against nonhuman animals. I suggest that, through the figure of the gengånger, or “one who walks again,” and the built environment and relics in Svalbard, Paver works to transmit both the violence of harvesting marine mammals and the violence men perpetrate against each other in the name of resource extraction. In this essay I engage in dialogue with recent environmental humanities work on ecophobia, dark ecologies, and the ecocritical uses of fear, and argue for the consideration of the ghost story, a genre little studied by ecocritics. Through highlighting the novel’s focus on violence linked to extractive practices, I suggest, finally, that Dark Matter performs two important functions: it records past inhuman ecologies and it opens out onto a reading of contemporary Arctic geopolitics. Resumen Este ensayo analiza cómo el uso de narrativas góticas y de terror en la novela de Michelle Paver Dark Matter (La materia oscura, 2010), un cuento de fantasmas, debilita las fantasías bucólicas y románticas del Ártico. Recurriendo a la historia de la caza de ballenas, morsas y focas en Svalbard, el emplazamiento de la expedición científica de 1937 de la novela, así como mi propia experiencia allí, analizo la tensión creada por Paver entre la belleza del medio ambiente de Svalbard y su larga historia como lugar de violencia humana contra animales no-humano. Sugiero que, a través de la figura del gengänger, o “el que anda otra vez,” las reliquias y el medio ambiente construido de Svalbard, Paver intenta transmitir tanto la violencia de la cosecha y comercio de mamíferos marinos como la que perpetúan los hombres contra sí mismos en nombre de la extracción de recursos. AbstractJohn Henry Michell (1863–1940) published scientific papers only between 1890 and 1902, but included in his 23 papers from that short but productive period are some of the most important contributions ever made by an Australian mathematician. In this article I shall concentrate on the extraordinary 1898 paper “The wave resistance of a ship” Phil. Mag.(5) 45, 106–123. There are many reasons why this paper was an astounding achievement, but perhaps the most remarkable is that the resulting formula has not been improved upon to this day. In the computer age, many efforts have been made to do so, but with little success so far. The formula itself involves a triple integral of an integrand constructed from the offset data for the ship's hull, and even the task of evaluating this triple integral is not a trivial one on today's computers; another reason for admiration of Michell's own heroic hand-calculated numerical work in the 1890's. Lack of a routine algorithm for Michell's integral has inhibited its use by naval architects and ship hydrodynamic laboratories, and there has been a tendency for it to receive a bad press based on unfair comparisons, e.g. comparison of model experiments (themselves often suspect) with inaccurate computations or computations for the wrong hull, etc. The original integral is in fact quite reasonable as an engineering tool, and some new results confirming this are shown. Improvement beyond Michell is however needed in some important speed ranges, and indications are given of recent approaches that may be promising.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Michelle Walker. Design/methodology/approach In this single case study, Michelle gives a short background to the development of her depression and is then interviewed by Jerome. Findings Michelle sets out the reasons she developed depression. These map onto the research conducted by Brown and Harris some 50 years ago, showing how social factors can create a vulnerability to develop depression. Research limitations/implications Single case studies provide us with one person’s narrative. That narrative is, however, unique and can often offer us insights that are lost in large statistical surveys. Practical implications Michelle found that the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) approach really helped her. However, she should never have had to wait as long as she did for that help. Mental health services must respond quickly, even if only to offer a triage assessment. Social implications Brown and Harris identified four key vulnerability factors for depression in women. Michelle met three of these. How many other women are in a similar situation and are suffering in silence? Originality/value We can learn a lot from the factors that helped Michelle recover from her depressive episode: medication, CBT, the support of her mother, education, finding her soulmate and, although she does not say it, her own rugged determination and personal resilience.

Michell structure is well known among tensegrity structures due to its optimization form and minimum mass of the structure. Michell had adopted this idea from the results of James C Maxwell's research on truss design. This paper presents the basic mathematical model of Michell structure based on complexity order q=2 in the two-dimensional coordinate system. This mathematical model imparts the analysis of all nodes and all members of Michell structure and investigates their position to construct a stable Michell structure. This basic mathematical model of Michell structure of complexity order q=2 can be used as a foundation to develop the Michell structure of high complexity orders. Furthermore, the force density in each member of the structure has been studied. An expression to calculate the minimum mass of structure has been defined at the end of this paper, which is the most important factor to construct any kind of tensegrity structure.

El siguiente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar de manera comparativa los proyectos para regular las migraciones en Chile de los Gobiernos de Michelle Bachelet y Sebastián Piñera. Se argumenta que ambos comparten un rasgo común: pese a contener elementos que se basan en la promoción de derechos, mantienen características que se corresponden con una lógica de control. Se resume el fenómeno chileno de la inmigración, que motiva a crear una normativa que reemplace a la vigente; se analiza la actual Ley de Extranjería y se establece un marco comparativo que dirime las particularidades de las propuestas de Ley Migratoria hechas por los Gobiernos de Michelle Bachelet y Sebastián Piñera. Abstract This paper aims to analyze, in a comparative perspective, the projects to regulate migrations in Chile presented by the governments of Michelle Bachelet and Sebastian Piñera. It is argued that both share a common feature: despite having elements based on the promotion of rights, they maintain traits that correspond to a control logic. We summarize the Chilean phenomenon of immigration that motivates the creation of a new regulation, analyze the present law and, finally, establish a comparative framework that addresses the particularities of the proposed immigration laws made by the Michelle Bachelet and Sebastian Piñera governments.

This paper aims to examine the stylistic effect of the mood features in Michelle Obama’s final address to the Americans. Anchored on Systemic Functional Linguistics and Discourse Stylistics, it basically focuses on the mood structures and the modality types registered in the speech. The findings disclose that the then U.S. first lady relies more on declarative mood and deontic modality to convey her message. The study thus infers that in her final message to her country citizens, Michelle Obama concentrates on action clauses and behaves as advisor towards women and men, as well as young and adults.

AbstractAnalytical closed-form solution to the stress distribution associated with a hole in finite plates subjected to tension has not been obtained yet. Wherefore, a method developed in this paper is based on a Beltrami-Michell methodology analyzing the Kirsch's problem under finite dimensions conditions of both plane stress and plane strain. This aimed ability is achieved by combining the Beltrami-Michell plane equations, isochromatic information on the boundaries only; and the finite difference method into an effectual hybrid method for analyzing rectangular plates of finite width with circular holes. Furthermore, the Beltrami-Michell methodology suggested may be applied on other plate and cut-out forms.

This study analyses Michelle Paver’s youth book series Chronicles of Ancient Darkness from an intersectional power perspective. Gender and age are the main elements, and with these two power structures comes another layer of the analysis, namely, the postfeminist idea that it is impossible to categorise people as they are too diverse and ambivalent. Several characters, both youths and adults, are examined to see whether gender stereotypes are followed and if they determine what position of power the characters end up with. The study also explores whether the gender structures vary in groups where adults are present versus in groups where they are not. This adds another perspective, which is the element of age and therefore the problem of aetonormativity. The adults are the norm and they are in charge of the youths. However, when the youths meet with the adults, the two power structures, age and gender, clash in the question of whether a young man gets the upper hand over an older woman, or vice versa. In the end, the analysis concludes that even though the book series follows stereotypical gender structures in several ways, it also presents a query as to whether both gender and age categorisations are accessible and valid. Most main characters question their sufficiency and oppression on several levels, both in insecurities and in open discussion, and this result ends up harmonising with a postfeminist thought pattern. For all to be free from the hardships of not being adequate, or not receiving fair treatment from others based on gender or age, these structures must be questioned and perhaps even challenged.

Mänskliga handlingar förstör dagligen planeten vi bor på, men trots att vi numera är medvetna om problematiken görs det ändå inte tillräckligt för att förändra detta beteende. Undervisningen i den svenska skolan syftar bland annat till att främja elevernas respekt för miljön och visa dem ett hållbart levnadssätt. Syftet med denna uppsats är att utvärdera potentialen hos ett arbetssätt som kombinerar svenskämnets läsning av skönlitteratur med miljöfrågor. Med hjälp av begreppen ekocentrism och antropocentrism gör vi en ekokritisk läsning av Michelle Pavers Vargbröder. Utdrag ur boken används också som grund för att diskutera hållbar utveckling med en klass elever i årskurs 6, för att se vilka värderingar som framträder. Resultatet visar att det finns stor potential att öka elevers ekolitteracitet med hjälp av gruppdiskussioner och ekokritiska resonemang utifrån en skönlitterär bok, men att arbetssättet kräver mycket tid och vidare forskning. Eleverna visar ett stort intresse för läsningen och för frågorna, och även om deras konkreta kunskaper brister en del, visar de att de tycker att det är viktigt att människan tar hand om vår planet.

Comme son maître Sainte-Beuve, Walter Pater a cherché dans le portrait littéraire un moyen de comprendre sa propre sensibilité artistique et religieuse ansi que celle des autres. Platonicien et hegelien, il a envisagé à la fin de sa vie une trilogie qui montrerait l'action de l'esprit à travers trois époques "négatives"- Rome des antonins, la France des derniers Valosi et l'Angleterre des lumières. Le premier roman de la trilogie Marius l'épicurien est le seul qui ait été achevé. Dans ce travail nous avons examiné les trois portraits litteraires qui s'insère dans le deuxième roman (inachevé) de la triologie Gaston de Latour, afin de démontrer que Pater essaie, à travers ce roman de suivre l'action de l'esprit dans cette deuxième période historique qui était capitale pour Hegel. "La modernite". Chaque rencontre avec les astres représentera une étape sur le chemin de la vérité poursuivi par Pater lui-même. Toutefois, ce ne sera pas dans Gaston de Latour que l'on trouvera la synthèse des vérités, et peut-être la vérité de Pater lui-même, mais dans son ouvrage ultime, Pascal la recherche de la vérité est aussi chez l'artiste la recherche d'un "style". Comme Sainte-Beuve, Pater trouve que la prose est l'art de la modernité. Tout en étant fasciné par la subjectivité moderne du style de Montaigne, il est convaincu que le style de Pascal, capable d'exprimer à la fois les pensées de la raison et du coeur a faconné le francais moderne
Disciple of Sainte-Beuve, Walter Pater sought int the literary portrait a means of understanding his own rich artistic and religious sensibility. Platonist and hegelian he envisaged, in his later years, a trilogy which would show the action of the spirit in three "negative" periods of history : antonine rome, France under the last of the valois and England of the "lumieres" Marius the epicurean was the only novel in the trilogy to be finished. In this thesis we have examined the three literary portraits inserted in the novel of the trilogy- Gaston de Latour in order to show that Pater endeavoured in this unfinished work to follow the action of the spirit in this second period of history which was capital for hegel- modernity. Each meeting with th "stars" of the renaissance represents a stage in the itinerary followed by Pater himself. However it is not in Gaston de Latour that Pater will find the synthesis of the different aspects of truth that he has found. To follow pater's itinerary to the end we must examine another work, also unfinished, the portrait pascal. For the artist the search for truth is also a search for a "style". Attracted by the subjectivity of Montaigne's sytle, Pater is convinced that Pascal's prose in its ability to express the thoughts of the mind and the heart, is the prose that has shaped modern french

This thesis explores the cultural history of microfilm and microphotography during the period 1900–1970, thus contributing to the broader field of research on the history of 20th century information management in the era before digital technology. The aim is to study how microfilm repeatedly, in various contexts and over time, was described and perceived as a new medium. To this end the book examines and analyses the plans, dreams and visionary prognostics put forth by various historical actors with an interest in microfilm – using case studies situated at different junctures and periods (1904–1910, 1937, 1940–1952, 1950–1970), while also ranging geographically from the United States to Europe and Sweden. From a theoretical and methodological point of view the thesis seeks to understand the historical formation of microfilm by developing the notions of configuration and reconfiguration, employing a perspective which emphasizes the continuous ontological interplay and interdependence of materiality and discourse in the formation of media. Thus, at the empirical level, the analysis takes into account realized technological materialities as well as unrealized imaginary articulations, dreams and expectations integral to the configuration of microfilm within a broader culture of paperwork. As a result of this approach the study draws on scientific texts and articles in journals, as well as newspaper reports, commercial messages, ads, handbooks and various archival documents. The analysis reveals a close relationship between microfilm and experiences of entropy connected to information systems based on paper and paperwork. It is argued that, within the dreams and plans that are studied, the most important function of microfilm was to regulate noise, decay and disorder associated with the materiality of paper – through ordering, operating on and modifying the capacities of paper media. It is also noted that microfilm was perceived and articulated as a new medium over a long period of time, even though very little changed at the technological level. From a historiographical point of view, it is thus argued, microfilm can be characterized as a simultaneously continuous and discontinuous phenomenon, taking part in a history that unfolded through repetitions, returns and non-linear steps rather than along an uninterrupted, linear path.

This book begins where so many others conclude: 1804. Recent scholarship has begun to explore the challenges that Atlantic world powers posed to Haitian sovereignty and legitimacy during the Age of Revolution, but there existed an equally important internal challenge to Haiti’s post-independence sovereignty: a civil war between those who envisioned a military authoritarian empire and those who wished to establish a liberal republic. This book argues that the post-independence civil war context is central to understanding Haiti’s long postcolonial nineteenth century: the foundational political, intellectual, and regional tensions that constitute Haiti’s fundamental plurality. Considerable work has been dedicated to unearthing the uneven and unequal production of historical narratives about Haiti in the wake of Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s groundbreaking Silencing the Past, but many more narratives—namely, those produced from within Haitian historiography and literary history—remain to be questioned and deconstructed. This book unearths and continually probes the conceptually generative possibilities of Haiti’s post-revolutionary divisions, something the current historiographic framework on Haiti’s long postcolonial nineteenth century fails to fully apprehend. Through close readings of original print sources (pamphlets, newspapers, literary magazines, geographies, histories, poems, and novels), it sheds light on the internal realities, tensions, and pluralities that shaped the Haitian Revolution and its aftermath to reveal the process of contestation, mutual definition, and continual (re)inscription of Haiti’s meaning throughout its long nineteenth century.

The paper deals with foundation and further fortunes of the Florentine abbey of San Miniato, founded by bishop Ildebrando (1018), and discusses the grounds of the strong hostility that Vallombrosan monks demonstrated toward florentine bishops like the same Ildebrando or Pietro Mezzabarba (who 1067 founded the nunnery of San Pier Maggiore). The so-called Vita anonima of John Gualberto, discovered and published by Robert Davidsohn, is particularly hard on these bishops, but it was written around 1120 by a monk of San Salvatore di Settimo (near Florence), in order to discredit the present bishop Goffredo Alberti, brother of count Tancredi Nontigiova. The paper considers also the cases of Pistoia and Pisa, where around the end of 11th century local bishops founded the abbeys of San Michele in Forcole and San Rossore.

This paper aims at studying the Italian fortune of the Calderonian play Con quien vengo vengo , firstly, by focusing on its first version by Michele della Marra (1665) and then moving on to a triple textual comparison between the Calderonian source-text, the rewriting of Della Marra and the second adaptation by the actress Angiola D'Orso, whose first edition came out in 1666. Despite his faithfullness to the plot of the original text, the first translator remodels the text either by summarizing it, or removing certain typically Calderonian rhetorical artifices, or replacing the figure of the gracioso by that of the southern servant, who uses the dialect. On the contrary, Angiola D'Orso shows greater respect for the Spanish play, displaying more sensitiveness toward its rethorical beauty, which she is able to reproduce successfully.

This chapter explores the Platonism in Pater’s Gaston de Latour, which began publication in monthly instalments in 1888. Like Marius, Gaston is set in a time of religious turmoil—the religious wars of sixteenth-century France—and follows a single character in search of spiritual transcendence. Along the way Gaston has critical encounters with historical authors, such as Michel de Montaigne and Giordano Bruno, who enrich his understanding of Platonism. The love that seeks wholeness in Plato’s Symposium is proposed as a model for Pater’s critical engendering with historical authors. Beyond Platonic love narratives, Pater incorporates the Odyssean homecoming, employed by Neoplatonists, and the Christian narrative of desire in Song of Solomon. Gaston’s later chapters seem to engage with Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Portrait of Mr. W. H.’ concerning what Pater means by the phrase ‘lover and philosopher at once’, inspired by Plato’s Phaedrus.

In this qualitative research, in-depth surveys were conducted with all of the seven chefs of Michelin-starred restaurants in Croatia. These restaurants are: Draga di Lovrana, Boškinac, Monte, Pelegrini, LD Restaurant and 360° located in Zagreb, Lovran, Novalja, Rovinj, Šibenik, Korčula and Dubrovnik. Results of research uncover whether and which are the significant forms of activities that Croatian Michelin-starred restaurants implement in order to enhance destination attractiveness and by that influence placing Croatia on the world gastronomy map, creating stronger gastronomy destination brands.

After first introducing that paper and its core theoretical claims, the following sections attempt a re-reading of the famous ‘Tuna/Dolphin’ controversy, with a particular focus on the purse seine net, in light of Callon’s claims, and of the methods of science and technology studies (STS) generally. It draws attention in particular to the politics of purification which has, in significant part, characterized international regulatory strategies for dealing with this dispute, especially through the GATT/WTO system.

Concomitant with the explosive development and progress made in the field of molecular biology, initiated by development and proof of the double helix structure of DNA some 40 years ago, there has been a much more subdued, but equally exciting and important, development in the area of signal transduction (Nishizuka, 1992; Berridge, 1984; Exton, 1990). What makes the latter subject so enchanting to biochemists is the finding that membrane phospholipids are intimately involved in the transduction process. Interestingly, the potential role of phospholipids in the signal transduction pathway was formulated some 40 years ago also. (Perhaps all great discoveries occur in 40 year cycles.) In any event the first hint of any possible involvement of phospholipids in cellular stimulus responses was gained from the work of Hokin and Hokin, which first appeared in 1953. In this classic paper, these investigators reported that treatment of pigeon pancreas slices with acetylcholine or carbamylcholine (cholinergic drugs) resulted not only in the secretion of amylases but also in the turnover of two specific membrane phospholipids, namely, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidic acid. While the entire process of stimulus response in a mammalian cell is now much more complicated, nevertheless the findings by Hokin and Hokin were of major importance in the maturation of this field. Unfortunately, the impact of the Hokins’ observations was not immmediately felt. At that point in time, phospholipids were viewed mainly as semipermeable membrane structures whose main function was to regulate the ion content of the cell. In addition, another deterrent was the limited information on the chemical structure of the mammalian cell phospholipids. Hence there was a hiatus of many years in which low-profile lipid chemists and biochemists labored to solve the chemical nature of membrane lipids and to deduce their physical arrangement in the cell. Then in 1975, Michell published a key paper (Michell, 1975) in which he noted the importance of the inositol-containing phospholipids in the membrane process known as calcium gating. This paper initiated what can be called the “PI” era, which is still very much alive and well today.

In flexible multibody systems, it is convenient to approximate many structural components as beams. In classical beam theories, such as Timoshenko beam theory, the beams cross-section is assumed to remain plane. While such assuption is capable of capturing the kinetic energy of the system accurately, it cannot represent the strain energy adequately. In the authorss recent paper, an systematic approach was proposed for the modeling of three-dimensional beam problems. The proposed approach is based on the Hamiltonian formalism and leads to an expansion of the solution in terms of extremity and central solutions. This paper extends the previous approach to the “Almansi-Michell problem,” i.e., three dimensional beams subjected to distributed loads. Such problems can be represented by non-homogenous Hamiltonian systems, in contrast with Saint-Venants problem, which is represented by homogenous Hamiltonian systems. The solutions of Almansi-Michells problem are not only determined by the Hamiltonian coefficient matrix but also by the applied loading distribution patterns. hence, the contributions of the loading pattern need to be taken into account. A dimensional reduction procedure is proposed and the three-dimensional governing equations of Almansi-Michells problem can be reduced to a set of one-dimensional beams equations. Furthermore, the three-dimensional displacements and stress components can be recovered from the one-dimensional beams solution.

The presented work highlights parallels between natural and human designs for optimization purposes. Wolff’s law predicts that bone trabeculae orientation alterations within a dynamic environment occur in such a way as to use bone material in a structurally efficient manner; this occurs because trabeculae orientations align themselves along principal stress trajectories. Michell has also demonstrated how to optimize structures under a given a set of mechanical loads. Some researchers have recently defined a special case for optimal tensegrity structures that produces the discrete Michell truss. In this paper we have carried out a performance comparison between two different frame structures modeled based on the Wolff’s hypothesis and optimal tensegrity formulation.

This paper reports a theoretical study of the power performance and environmental footprint of high-speed vessels in calm deep water, paying particular attention to a high-speed catamaran cargo vessel Faltinsen [1]. The power analysis uses a modified version of the method of Doctors and Day [2]. One modification to their approach is that the wave resistance and free surface wave profiles, have been numerically predicted using two different linear potential flow field theories; Michell thin-ship theory (Yeung and Wan [3]) and the 3D Rankine panel method (Hess and Smith [4]), respectively. We have based the latter method on the combination of the Dawson [5] upstream finite difference operator and the ‘staggered grid’ technique (Jensen et al. [6]). In addition, this paper shows how the viscosity effects modeled on the free surface layer influence the behavior of the wave resistance curves as predicted by Michell’s thin ship theory. This was done by adopting the approaches described by Tuck [7] and Lazauskas [8]. The wave resistance models were verified and validated using the examples of Wigley monohull (Lazauskas [8], Tarafder and Suzuki [9]) and catamaran (Yeung and Wan [3], Tarafder and Suzuki [10]) analytical forms, as well as on the Tuck parabolic strut (Tuck [7]). Furthermore, the resistance models were extended using free surface profile estimates at selected Froude numbers and applied to the case of a high-speed catamaran cargo vessel. The numerical results obtained were compared with published results and their accuracy and application feasibility is discussed from the perspective of preliminary high-speed vessel design. Based on the discussion above, suitable wave resistance models were selected and combined with the modified Doctors and Day [2] method giving the total resistance of the high-speed catamaran cargo vessel in the interval of Froude numbers. Having the estimates of total resistance, enables the effective power to be found. The results were compared with known results and were found to be in good agreement. Through combination of the effective power and propulsion factors, the brake power of the generic propulsion system is predicted. Taking into account the type of vessel being analyzed, the most common type of the propulsion diesel engine was selected. Finally, knowing the indicative environmental footprint of the selected engine, emission levels of Green House Gases (GHG) and solid particles were obtained. The emission results are further discussed in an ecologically friendly high-speed vessel design perspective (IMO [11, 19]).

Given NASA’s renewed initiative to return to the moon, it is imperative to develop a mobility platform which will enable a wider range of exploration and science. To this end a wheel which can perform in a lunar environment for an extended period of time and distance is needed. This paper analyzes and evaluates the attempts to develop such a solution and the challenges which have arisen. Furthermore, it builds upon an analytical basis for the proposed solution and examines further applications in vehicular mobility. Specifically, three concepts were conceived, analyzed, prototyped, and tested in a senior design project class supported by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Michelin Tire Corporation, then critically examined for failure modes. The lessons learned from the analysis are currently being applied in the development of third and fourth generation prototypes.

This paper provides an overview of the multiple case histories of the Direct Pipe technology in the US and overseas, including a 42″/48″ casing pipe installation by Michels Directional Crossings. Thereby illustrating the benefits for the owner, engineer and contractor in comparison to HDD in permeable soil conditions. The Direct Pipe method has been first used in 2007 at the Rhine river crossing in Worms, Germany. Since then, more than 18 crossings have been installed in Europe and the US with great success. The longest installation so far had a total length of 4,600ft (1,400m) and a pipeline diameter of 48″. The peak performance during that installation was 756ft (232m) per day (24hrs). The first installation in the US was in August 2010, crossing HI 70 in Florida. In 2011 the first 42″ system has been used at a project in Corning, NY by Michels Directional Crossings, for the installation of a casing pipe for a 24″ HDD crossing. Laney Directional Drilling followed in early 2013 with the first 48″ Direct Pipe system being operated in North America at the Aquashicola crossing for Williams Pipelines in Monroe county, Pennsylvania. August 2013 Direct Pipe made its debut in Canada at the Beaver River Crossing for Inter Pipeline Fund north of Bonnyville, Alberta. The largest pipeline currently installed is a 56″ steel pipe in Preston, England with a total length of 2,820ft, serving as casing pipe for a post installed 36″ potable water pipeline (HDPE). The combination of the well established Microtunneling technique with the Pipe Thruster technology makes it ideal for difficult (permeable) soil conditions which pose a certain risk for frack-outs using the HDD method.

In this paper, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms are introduced to optimize ship hull forms for reduced drag. Two versions of ABC algorithm are used: one is the basic ABC algorithm, and the other is an improved artificial bee colony (IABC) algorithm. A recently developed fast flow solver based on the Neumann-Michell theory is used to evaluate the drag of the ship in the optimization process. The ship hull surface is represented by discrete triangular panels and modified using radial basis function interpolation method. The developed optimization algorithms are first validated by benchmark mathematical functions with different dimensions. They are then applied to the optimization of DTMB Model 5415 for reduced drag. Two optimal hull forms are obtained by the ABC and the IABC algorithms. A large drag reduction is obtained by both of the algorithms. The optimal hull form obtained by the IABC algorithm has larger drag reduction than that of the hull form from the ABC algorithm. The results show that two ABC algorithms can be used for optimizing ship hull forms and the IABC algorithm has better performance than the ABC algorithm for the tested case in ship hull form optimization.

The evolution of meso-structures in the development of the shear band of Michelin’s non-pneumatic tire, the Tweel, is presented in this paper. Designers and researchers at Clemson University worked on a research projects with Michelin to support NIST efforts in fuel efficiency improvement and NASA efforts in manned exploration systems. The goal of each was to replace the elastomeric material of shear band with materials which can tolerate harsh temperatures and shear loads or to replace the materials with linear elastic low-hysteretic loss materials. The concepts initially proposed by ideation method were prototyped for physical testing. A case study examining the documentation reports for each project is conducted to provide a reflective understanding of how the evolution in the projects occurred. The goal of developing this retrospective is to try to identify guidelines and approaches that could be integrated into a designer driven systematic approach for custom design of meso-structures.

This paper describes the experimental testing and validation of the analytical models developed in our companion paper (IMECE2005-81581) for the nonlinear kinematics and dynamics of the suspension linked to a nonlinear rack and pinion steering system model. More specifically, the experimental results are used to cross verify the numerical simulations of the nibble using custom built analytical and ADAMS models, described in the companion paper. For this, shop floor based quasi-static Kinematic and Compliance (K&C) and dynamic testing results along with track testing on special purpose track at Michelin are presented. Other results include impulse testing of the steering system, as mounted on the vehicle, as well as shaker testing to verify the results. Road testing is also carried out at speeds close to the vehicle critical speed in order to compare and validate the suspension models using the quasi-static K&C testing. The road testing results demonstrate the variation of forces in the steering system due to tire imbalances, emphasizing the nonlinear effects in the vehicle system modeling as well as the variation of the shimmy phenomenon with vehicle speed and tire imbalance.

Housing affordability is an ever-growing concern in rapidly urbanizing countries like India. The need for affordable housing can hardly be overemphasis in India. Government has many policies and programs running for fulfilling the requirement. But it is essential to define affordability standards for the success of any such policies and programs. The Ratio Method, which is currently used as the base for determining affordable housing, doesn’t have the flexibility to match the varied scale and standards across Indian cities. This paper is based on Michel E stone’s residual income’ method to measure housing affordability for India’s million-plus city. It gives a new approach for measuring housing affordability based on the minimum living cost for survival. It uses Poverty Line data (2014) and NSSO economic survey data (2012) for defining the minimum standard of living in the city. Stakeholders can use the city-specific measurement for affordable housing generated from this paper in affordable housing policies and programs.
