This chapter presents and justifies the use of both a dictionary corpus and a newspaper corpus. The dictionary corpus is used because of the role of the dictionary as linguistic authority in France, and the stable status of the Anglicisms included in it. For the newspaper data, the study benefited from the French text-mining tool named Sulci, originally designed for the corpus and thesaurus analysis of the daily newspaper Libération, which allowed extraction of all the dictionary-unattested forms in one year’s issues. In fact, this study is the first to use an electronic corpus to analyze the influence exerted by English over French. The advantages and disadvantages of the semi-automatic extraction of only dictionary-unsanctioned words of English origin are discussed in detail. The chapter includes the selection criteria for what counts as a borrowed item to be collected in the appended database.

Annotation:
This article shows that one should start social science inquiry with individuals, their motivations, and the kinds of transactions they undertake with one another. It specifically discusses four basic schools of social theory: conflict, shared-values, exchange, and coordination theories. Conflict theories almost inherently lead into normative discussions of the justification of coercion in varied political contexts. Religious visions of social order are usually shared-value theories and interest is the chief means used by religions to guide people. Individualism is at the core of an exchange theory. Because the first three theories are generally in conflict in any moderately large society, coercion is a sine qua non for social order. Coordination interactions are especially important for politics and political theory and probably for sociology, although exchange relations might be most of economics, or at least of classical economics. Shared-value theory may possibly turn into the most commonly asserted alternative to rational choice in this time as contractarian reasoning recedes from center stage in the face of challenges to the story of contracting that lies behind it and the difficulty of believing people actually think they have consciously agreed to their political order.

This article addresses three dimensions for data collection: mode, space, and time. It considers the problems of adequately representing persons by ensuring high response rates and measuring opinions validly and reliably through the design of high-quality questions. The advent of the internet and the World Wide Web is dramatically expanding the repertoire for survey research. The evidence suggests that the forces driving response rate down are largely orthogonal to substantive political choices. Surveys overrepresent political interest and its correlates and so may replicate class and other barriers to political participation.

This article reviews the history of the quantitative methodology institutions, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), and the American Political Science Association's Political Methodology Section. It also highlights the role of organizations and institutions in promoting and structuring the development of quantitative methodology in political science. The development of summer programs in quantitative methods is described. There was a market niche for methodology both as a subfield on its own, and as a direct contributor to improving substance through improved methods. The existence of the Society for Political Methodology has increased expectations for graduate training, at least among those who see their careers as methodologists.

David A. Buchanan explores what these chapters reveal about the status of unconventional methodology in organization and management research. Clearly, there is an appetite for new perspectives, and a body of researchers who are developing fresh approaches. These innovations are driven by a desire to find new lenses and perspectives, to cover new ground, to capture information that conventional methods cannot reach, and to generate fresh insights. Some commentators have criticized the pursuit of ‘novelty’ in research in our field, but this argument is directed towards novel contributions to theory, an emphasis that discourages replication studies and the accumulation of evidence. That argument is not aimed at methodological innovation. Journal editors broadly support attempts to break methodological rules, as long as these departures are adequately explained and justified. Based on a survey of journal editors, this chapter concludes with advice to researchers considering the use of unconventional methodology.

In this chapter a Moorean approach, on which one seeks to defeat, rather than refute, skepticism, is explained, developed, and defended. The issue of whether skepticism was doomed to inevitable defeat on the methodology in question is explored, and the considerations on which that matter turns, are identified. The power of the AI, the classical skeptical argument from skeptical hypotheses, is defended, focusing mainly on the viability the skeptic’s first premise, that you do not know that you are not a brain in a vat. Finally, the importance of solving the puzzle that this form of skeptical argument confronts us with is vindicated, whether or not the skeptic who wields AI was doomed to defeat.

Annotation:
This chapter discusses how the methodological self-understanding outlined in Husserl’s early writings changes in later stages of the Phenomenological Movement. The discussion is guided by Merleau-Ponty’s short remarks in the preface of his Phenomenology of Perception about the ambiguity of the phenomenological method. Against this background, it is shown that the critical examination of the possibility of phenomenological reflection and the explanation of the idea of intentionality lead to relevant modifications and revisions of the initial assumptions concerning the phenomenological method. Particularly, the phenomenological concepts of the a priori, transcendental subjectivity, constitution, and descriptive analysis should be modified by considering the relevance of opposing aspects binding the phenomenological reflection also to facticity, the natural attitude, our life-world, and constructive moments. In addition, it is argued that the phenomenological task of offering an investigation of originary experience as a pre-linguistic and subjective experience should also be revised.

This book is an attempt to understand philosophical inquiry by means of answering five questions: What is the structure of theoretical inquiry? What are the goals of theoretical inquiry? What are philosophical data? What is a sound method for philosophical theorizing? Is there reason to think that philosophical progress can be or has been made? Chapter 1 tackles the first two questions: inquiry is organized around the collection of data and the application to data of a sound method, and is ultimately aimed at achieving understanding. Chapters 2 and 3 address the third question, canvassing various theories of philosophical data before landing on an epistemic theory according to which data are what inquirers, considered collectively, have good epistemic reason to believe. Chapters 4 and 5 tackle the fourth question, identifying three data about sound method, surveying and critically assessing prominent extant methods, and defending a novel philosophical method—the Tri-Level Method—by revealing the various ways in which it can handle the three data and facilitate understanding. Chapter 6 addresses the fifth question, arguing that the Tri-Level Method can explain how to make philosophical progress, that its constituent criteria can be used to assess whether such progress has been made, that there really has been substantial philosophical progress, and that philosophy’s progress is relevantly comparable to that made in other fields.
