‘Pieta’(1980) by Se Choong Kim required scientific analysis and conservation treatment due to long outdoor exhibitions and paint on surface of bronze sculpture. However, there was a concern that the originality of artwork and ‘moral rights of the artist(the right of integrity)’ could be violated by including conservation treatment methods that were inevitably irreversible, such as removing the old layer and re-patination. Accordingly, the brown color that was mainly used during the artist’s lifetime, was selected as the patination color through collaboration with various stakeholders. As a result of analyzing the making technique of ‘Pieta’, it was found that it was cast in Cu-Zn-Sn-Pb quaternary art bronze. The material, methods, and environment at the time of making artwork were confirmed by comparing the result of scientific analysis of welding, repair, and defects with inerviews with casting engineers. The paint painted on the surface of the bronze sculpture was confirmed as painted twice with metalic paint mixed with polystyrene and copper powder and graphite-based paint. Laser cleaning was applied after a preliminary experiments to stably remove paint, and 95% of the paint layer area was uniformly removed as a result of comparing and analyzing the volume before and after removal through 3D scanning. Brown patina was applied through patination then wax coating to finish.

ABSTRACTArtemisinin (ART)-based combination therapy (ACT) is used as the first-line treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria worldwide. However, despite high potency and rapid action, there is a high rate of recrudescence associated with ART monotherapy or ACT long before the recent emergence of ART resistance. ART-induced ring-stage dormancy and recovery have been implicated as possible causes of recrudescence; however, little is known about the characteristics of dormant parasites, including whether dormant parasites are metabolically active. We investigated the transcription of 12 genes encoding key enzymes in various metabolic pathways inP. falciparumduring dihydroartemisinin (DHA)-induced dormancy and recovery. Transcription analysis showed an immediate downregulation for 10 genes following exposure to DHA but continued transcription of 2 genes encoding apicoplast and mitochondrial proteins. Transcription of several additional genes encoding apicoplast and mitochondrial proteins, particularly of genes encoding enzymes in pyruvate metabolism and fatty acid synthesis pathways, was also maintained. Additions of inhibitors for biotin acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) carboxylase and enoyl-acyl carrier reductase of the fatty acid synthesis pathways delayed the recovery of dormant parasites by 6 and 4 days, respectively, following DHA treatment. Our results demonstrate that most metabolic pathways are downregulated in DHA-induced dormant parasites. In contrast, fatty acid and pyruvate metabolic pathways remain active. These findings highlight new targets to interrupt recovery of parasites from ART-induced dormancy and to reduce the rate of recrudescence following ART treatment.

Introduction Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) are one of the most prescribed drug classes for the treatment of HIV infection worldwide. Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide/ Bictegravir (FTC/TAF/BIC) has been evaluated in randomized clinical trials; few studies have verified tolerability and safety in clinical practice. Our aim was to investigate the metabolic and hepatic safety in a real-life setting of FTC/TAF/BIC. Materials and methods Consecutive people living with HIV infection (PLWH) enrolled in the SCOLTA project, switching to or initiating their first antiretroviral treatment with FTC/TAF/BIC were included. PLWH with HBV co-infection were excluded. Metabolic and hepatic variables were collected at T0 and T1, were defined as baseline and 6-month follow-up respectively, and their modifications were analysed using the paired t-test and the analysis of variance. Results Five hundred and thirty-nine PLWH with at least one follow-up visit were included in the analysis. Mean age was 48 years (±12.1), 74% were male, 16.1% were naïve to antiretrovirals (ART). At T1, ART-experienced PLWH showed a significant reduction of total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides, and a slight increase in blood glucose (BG) and ALT. On the contrary, in ART-naïve PLWH blood lipids significantly increased, although with an unaffected TC/high density lipoprotein (HDL)-c ratio, while alanine aminotransferase (ALT) decreased significantly, mainly in those with altered baseline level. The treatment interruptions were 45 (8.4%) over the whole observation period, 13 (2.4%) due to AEs. The most frequent AEs were related to the central nervous system (6 events of depression, insomnia, headache, agitation) and 3 PLWH discontinued the regimen because of grade 1–2 weight gain. Conclusions In ART-experienced PLWH switching to FTC/TAF/BIC a significant improvement of lipid profile occurred but with significant BG and ALT variation without clinical relevance. In ART-naïve PLWH, blood lipids increased even though lipid profile did not worsen, and a trend towards normalization of liver enzymes was suggested. FTC/TAF/BIC is well tolerated in the real life setting.

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are two major causes of morbidity in chronic HIV infected patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART). This study was done on HIV infected individuals by comparing ART naive patients with patients on different ART regimens and evaluating the effect of ART on Metabolic syndrome and NAFLD.Method: It was a cross-sectional observational study done on 120 HIV infected individuals in a tertiary care centre in New Delhi. All cases with hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney or liver disease, thyroid disorders or on any drugs except ART were excluded. The risk markers for metabolic syndrome were assessed and compared within groups on different ART regimens. Results: Metabolic syndrome and NAFLD were found to be significantly more in cases on ART as compared to ART naïve cases. Metabolic syndrome was found to be associated with type of ART protease inhibitors (ATV/r)> nonucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) > no ART] and low CD4 cell counts (p=0.01). In those patients who were on ART, these parameters were found to be more in those on second line ART [i.e., protease inhibitor (PI)(ATV/r) based regimens] as compared to those on first line ART, [i.e., nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) based regimen]. 15% of cases on 2nd line ART (group C) had MetS as compared to 12.5% in those on 1st line ART (group B) and nil in ART naïve cases (group A). One third (34%) of all 120 cases were found to have NAFLD. A significantly higher number of cases (45%) in group C had NAFLD as compared to 32.5% in group B and 25% in group A respectively. Insulin resistance and metabolic risk markers were also significantly higher in cases on ART as compared to ART naïve.Conclusions: In HIV patients, the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is linked to an increase in the prevalence of metabolic risk factors, including insulin resistance, lipoatrophy and dystrophy, dyslipidaemia, and abnormalities of fat distribution. Although care of Opportunistic infections and recently CVD has received a lot of attention, it is equally important to address the metabolic abnormalities such as metabolic syndrome and NAFLD brought on by ART.

AbstractHuman Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and subsequent antiretroviral therapy (ART) are known to be related to different metabolic disorders. Although ART decreased HIV-associated mortality and morbidity, mortality rates in patients with HIV and ART are 3 to 15 higher than those in the general population. More than 50% of the mortality is due to diseases like: diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic renal disease and complications following bone fractures. In patients with HIV the metabolic disorders are mainly caused by mithocondrial toxicity, a side effect of ART, and they are represented by: dyslipidemia, lipoatrophy, insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus.

The study of surface texturing on a metallic surface has become a great area of interest of researchers in the last few decades. Surface texturing is employed for enhancing the performance of the surface in its working environment. As the characterization techniques have been evolving very fast, researchers have started mimicking the natural surfaces to take the advantages of their characteristics (such as self-cleaning, load capacity, reducing coefficient of friction). Manufacturing of natural inspired surface requires having a great control over the process to achieve the micro or nano features on the natural surfaces. Hence, the selection of the most suitable process and optimum parameters for machining of arrays of micro or nano features at large scale is highly desirable. This study reports an overview of different micromachining processes used for texturing on metallic surfaces and research gaps to be filled in the available literature. Electrochemical micromachining has tremendous potential on account of its versatility in different applications. It is a promising and economically viable machining process for micromanufacturing industries for fabrication of micro textures and micro features on metallic surfaces. Production of textured surface at large scale requires a sustainable technology, which can serve the purpose of enhancing the performance of the surface without changing the original properties of the surface. Indeed, laser surface texturing, through-mask electrochemical micromachining, lithography, micro- or nanocasting and so on are the existing methods which involve multiple steps for generation of textured surfaces. This article also reports some original experimental investigations for generation of different kinds of micro textures on metallic surfaces, namely, arrays of micro dimples, micro channels and micro pillars using a single-step maskless electrochemical micro-texturing process with a pre-patterned micro tool.

Obstetric and newborn outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancies are associated with significative prevalence of maternal and neonatal adverse health conditions, such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. These data are interpreted as anomalies in placentation involving a dysregulation of several molecular factors and pathways. It is not clear which extent of the observed placental alterations are the result of ART and which originate from infertility itself. These two aspects probably act synergically for the final obstetric risk. Data show that mechanisms of inappropriate trophoblast invasion and consequent altered vascular remodeling sustain several clinical conditions, leading to obstetric and perinatal risks often found in ART pregnancies, such as preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction and placenta previa or accreta. The roles of factors such as VEGF, GATA3, PIGF, sFLT-1, sEndoglin, EGFL7, melatonin and of ART conditions, such as short or long embryo cultures, trophectoderm biopsy, embryo cryopreservation, and supraphysiologic endometrium preparation, are discussed. Inflammatory local conditions and epigenetic influence on embryos of ART procedures are important research topics since they may have important consequences on obstetric risk. Prevention and treatment of these conditions represent new frontiers for clinicians and biologists involved in ART, and synergic actions with researchers at molecular levels are advocated.

Russia is on the second place among European countries in the number of completed cycles of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). The proportion of children conceived using ART becomes annually higher. The present review summarises data on the impact of new reproductive technologies on the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases are presented. Potential health risks in the introduction of ART in babies born are discussed in numerous studies, the impact on all stages of embryo- and organogenesis is noted. The greatest problem is a possible increase in the incidence of congenital malformations (CM) in children after ART compared to the latter in the natural population. The frequency of CM is due not only to the use of APT, but also to factors such as genetic characteristics, age and state of health of the mother, aggravated obstetric-gynecological history, multiplicity, low birth weight of the fetus. In children conceived with ART, often appear early symptoms of systemic endothelial dysfunction, metabolic disorders (lipid metabolism, glucose level), congenital heart defects (interventricular septum defect, small cardiac development abnormality (false chord), open arterial duct, open oval window). There is a need to improve prenatal diagnostics of CM in early pregnancy and regular medical examinations of children conceived with ART.

We aimed to determine the exercise intensity eliciting the highest (FATmax) and the lowest (FATmin) fat oxidation rate in sedentary men with obesity and to examine if these intensities correlate with their individual aerobic (AeT) and anaerobic (AnT) thresholds, respectively. Nineteen obese males performed breath-by-breath analysis to assess maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and to calculate their fat oxidation rate. Pearson correlation coefficient (r), coefficient of determination (R2) and paired t-test were used to evaluate VO2 at AeT and at FATmax and VO2 at AnT and at FATmin, respectively. FATmax and AeT occurred at 42.80±2.68% of VO2max and 43.02±2.73% of VO2max, while FATmin and AnT occurred at 53.40±3.65% of VO2max and 53.38±3.65% of VO2max, respectively. A high correlations were found between intensities matching FATmax and AeT (r=0.86, P<0.01) and those at FATmin and at AnT (r=0.99, P<0.01). The existing correlations suggest that metabolic thresholds may be used as exercise intensity markers assuring more tailored exercise approach in men with obesity.

In the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART), traditional risk factors for metabolic syndrome are presented as increasing age. In low- and middle-income countries, the restricted benefit package of national health security for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) does not facilitate the early detection of metabolic disorders. In order to assess the rational of national health security for metabolic abnormalities among people living with HIV (PLHIV), this retrospective study aims to determine the occurrence of metabolic abnormalities and its predicting factors. The study was approved by the hospital ethics committee and conducted at the internal medicine clinic, Pathum Thani Hospital, Thailand. Patients with HIV having had at least 1 year of first-line ART, and having their fasting glucose, fasting lipid profile, and blood pressure assessed before ART were recruited into the study. Those with any abnormal metabolic component prior to ART or absent history of ART were excluded. The metabolic abnormalities were defined as any of the following: elevated triglyceride, reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL), elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting glucose, or on drug treatment for these metabolic abnormalities. The occurrence of metabolic abnormalities was found in 102 of 340 patients (30.0%). Hypertension (11.4%) was the most common abnormality. Age became the single predictor of metabolic abnormalities (odds ratio [OR] = 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00–1.06). Aging patients with HIV should be the target group for monitoring and treating metabolic abnormalities. The revision of the benefit package on metabolic abnormalities is urgently needed to promote a better quality of life.

The three distinct medicinal parts of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Ang) roots are the head, body, and tail (ARH, ARB, and ART, respectively). How endophytic fungi shape the differences in metabolic components among these parts remains unclear. We quantified the distribution of active components and endophytic fungi along the ARH, ARB, and ART and their relationships. Based on the metabolic components and their abundances detected via non-target metabolism, the different medicinal parts were distinguishable. The largest number of dominant metabolic components was present in ART. The difference between ART and ARH was the greatest, and ARB was in a transitional state. The dominant active molecules in ART highlight their effects in haemodynamics improvement, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and hormone regulation, while ARH and ARB indicated more haemostasis, blood enrichment, neuromodulation, neuroprotection and tranquilisation, hepatoprotection, and antitumour activities than that of ART. The ARHs, ARBs, and ARTs can also be distinguished from each other based on the endophytic fungi at the microbiome level. The most dominant endophytic fungi were distributed in ART; the differences between ART and ARH were the largest, and ARB was in a transition state, which is consistent with the metabolite distributions. Structural equation modelling showed that the endophytic fungi were highly indicative of the metabolic components. Correlation analysis further identified the endophytic fungi significantly positively correlated with important active components, including Condenascus tortuosus, Sodiomyces alcalophilus, and Pleotrichocladium opacum. The bidirectional multivariate interactions between endophytic fungi and the metabolic components shape their spatial variations along the longitudinal direction in the Ang root.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) improves the quality of life of people living with HIV-1 (PLHIV) and reduces the mortality rate, but some individuals may develop metabolic abnormalities. This study evaluated changes in the nutritional status and biochemistry of PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy in a cohort that had not previously received ART and to follow up these individuals for 24 months after starting treatment. The initial cohort consisted of 110 individuals and ended with 42 people, assessed by a physical examination. A biochemical assay was performed using the colorimetric enzyme reaction technique, the proviral load was detected by qPCR and the quantification of the CD4/CD8 T lymphocytes was conducted by flow cytometry. PLHIV had increased levels of total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, ALT, urea and creatinine after 24 months of ART use (p < 0.05). In the assessment of the nutritional status, PLHIV had increased measures of Triciptal Skinfold, body mass index and arm circumference after the use of ART (p < 0.05). The viral load levels decreased and the CD4 levels increased after 24 months of ART use (p < 0.05). The change in the nutritional status in PLHIV on antiretroviral therapy seems to be a slow process, occurring in the long term, therefore, there is the need for a constant evaluation of these people to identify patients who need a nutritional intervention.

Doravirine (DOR) is a newly approved non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). We aimed to investigate, in a real-life setting, how switching to a DOR-based regimen rather than a rilpivirine (RPV)-based regimen impacted metabolic and hepatic safety. The analysis included 551 antiretroviral treatment (ART)-experienced people living with HIV (PLWH), starting RPV-based or DOR-based regimens with viral load < 200 copies/mL, baseline (T0), and at least one control visit (6-month visit, T1). We enrolled 295 PLWH in the RPV and 256 in the DOR cohort. At T1, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C), and triglycerides significantly decreased in both DOR and RPV cohorts, while high-density lipoprotein-C (HDL-C) only decreased in RPV-treated people. Consistently, the TC/HDL-C ratio declined more markedly in the DOR (−0.36, p < 0.0001) than in the RPV cohort (−0.08, p = 0.25) (comparison p = 0.39). Similar trends were observed when excluding the PLWH on lipid-lowering treatment from the analysis. People with normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels showed a slight ALT increase in both cohorts, and those with baseline ALT > 40 IU/L experienced a significant decline (−14 IU/L, p = 0.008) only in the DOR cohort. Lipid profile improved in both cohorts, and there was a significant reduction in ALT in PLWH with higher-than-normal baseline levels on DOR-based ART.

Background: HIV infection is a global pandemic. The adult HIV prevalence in India is 0.22%. Successful therapy is transforming HIV into a chronic medical condition, and there are many metabolic complications. This study aimed to evaluate the metabolic abnormalities in people living with HIV (PLHIV) who were on antiretroviral therapy (ART) for at least 2 years and compare it with ART-naïve patients as well as the effect of protease inhibitor-based (PI-based) and non-protease inhibitor-based (non-PI-based) ART was assessed. Methodology: Adult HIV-positive patients both ART-naïve and on ART for more than 2 years were included. Detailed history and clinical examination, including blood pressure and anthropometric measurements were done. This was followed by investigations like lipid profile including total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), fasting plasma glucose, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) estimation. Standard statistical tools were utilized to assess derangements and association to therapy. Results: The study was conducted for 1.5 years in a tertiary care hospital. A total of 70% of the study population was male with mean age of participants being 43.2 years, 40% were ART-naïve, 37% received non-PI-based ART, and 23% PI-based ART. The mean total cholesterol level and mean triglyceride value were significantly higher in the PI-based ART group than in the therapy-naïve group. The ART-naïve group was seen to have more subjects with abnormally low HDL-C values. The PI-based ART study subjects were found to have a greater number of cases of glucose intolerance in relation to the rest of the two groups significantly (p-value <0.001). The LDL-C systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference had no association with the different ART regimens or with the HIV infection itself. CD4 T cell count at diagnosis in the three study groups was compared with all the variables of metabolic syndrome and no association was found. Conclusion: Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels are the main parameters found to be affected in PLHIV on therapy

The article considers the classification of precious and non-precious alloys used in the manufacture of jewellery and art articles. Alloys are considered from the point of view of necessity of using protective and decorative coatings both for protection from environmental impact during operation of articles and colour surface decoration. A diverse nomenclature of various metallic, non-metallic and conversion coatings formed by different technological methods is shown. It is shown that the use of a certain coating is largely determined by the designer at the stage of creating a rendering of the product. Necessity to take into account the colouristic characteristics of alloys and coatings at the design stage and the existence of an inseparable connection between the product design, materials used, technologies of their shaping and decoration is pointed.
