According to Livy, Valerius Maximus and Zonaras, between the years 266-264 B.C., an embassy sent by Apollonia visited Rome. Most probably, the contact between Rome and Apollonia led to the conclusion of an economic agreement. Moreover, it seems likely that the treaty might have included clauses pertaining to the protection of the Greek and Italic traders against the pirates from the Adriatic Sea.

Annotation:
The great chain of being.
The borrowing of any quotation, - e. g. Ignoti nulla cupido or “There is no desire for a thing unknown” Ovid - either verse, prose extract, proverbial expressions, etc., is the reflection of the circulation of content through the several types of mediation thanks to which human society is built and which evolve into what is called “culture”. To refer to a line extracted from a Greek or Latin poem, or even a more recent one, or else from an ancient piece of prose, or to a topical expression roaming across time in an inevitably unpredictable trajectory, it seems appropriate to use the expression formulaic medal, an apt metaphor coined by our late professor Jean Deprun (†) in his Sorbonne research seminar of the 1980s, to characterize an expression phrased and rephrased over the centuries. The present study aims at tracing the journey of some of such nomadic formulaic medals. Our ambition is not to offer some new anthology of quotations, but to question some of them, according to their impact in the works in which they are reused, according to how pervious they may be to the spirit of their age, or according to the personal thoughts to which they may give rise. Such an ambition is demanding: history of ideas may render it possible to answer to it by outlining the various renditions which magnify or discontinue the original meaning of an expression as it moves along its route by leaps and bounds and crossroads.Following Arthur Oncken Lovejoy (1873-1962), the American author of The Great Chain of Being. A study of the history of an idea (1936), one could use the expression idea cells to refer to any ‘roaming' quotation inserted in a text like a micro-organism in a living creature. Because of the ‘biomorphic' connotation of this terminology the term formulaic medal has seemed preferable.Through a collocation based on a metaphor it performs both the attribution of a distinct value to the expression considered (just as the medal has a value for the numismatist) and the representation of its nomadic journey (just as a medal is generally bound to change hands).Which blueprint should be complied with to encompass the destiny of a formulaic medal? Three dimensions of time are to be taken into account. The formulaic medal must be examined first in its context present at the time of its appearance, in the work in which it occurred for the first time. This may fail to apply to all the formulaic medals considered: some expressions of a universal moral nature (such as the ‘Gold rule') cannot be attributed to one single identifiable author. When the object under study is a line or extract of prose by a well identified author, it is crucial to trace it back to the sources which may have inspired the author, shifting from its present to its past, keeping in mind that this may be somewhat difficult and sometimes rather unsuccessful. Finally its future is to be tackled by tracing what is going to be the next stages of the expression studied and its subsequent uses, which may come as a suprise as they may be enriched by variants or alterations which are not to be overlooked.Every author quoting an expression is allowed the freedom to reuse it: one may use it as the slogan of an innocuous rusticity, while another will use it as the motto of libertinism. As a consequence these formulaic medals, whether ancient or more recent, may reflect, according to the ideological context, the commitment to a cause or a bone of contention, or even watershed lines in territories carved at one point or another, by the history of thinking

“History and wisdom Aḥiqar the Assyrian” is an exception text since its roots goes in the ancient times of ancient Mesopotamia. His hero, Ahiqar is a Sage, a Ummānu, advise the kings of Assyria, and he is the subject of a vile plot, hatched by his nephew that the Sage had yet raised as if he were her own son ; from the brink of death, Ahiqar is rehabilitated and sent to Egypt to confront the puzzles and the challenges that the Pharaoh launched against his king, while his nephew is punished by death. Our text corpus has seven versions of “History and wisdom Ahiqar the Assyrian,” ranging from 500 BC until the eighteenth century, and composed in Aramaic, in Syriac, in Ge’ez, in Arabic and in Greek. In a comparison conducted in French translation, through the versions we have and all along the different episodes of the story, we first study the dramatic trajectory of life Ahiqar. We then examine the puzzles and challenges addressed by this expert hero of language against Pharaoh before analyzing the two long series of maxims, first educational and punitive, that it administers to his nephew. We also discuss the terms of re-use, or how the history of Aramaic Ahiqar could be re-used, with more or less success, in the Bible, the “Book of Tobit” in the “Life of Aesop the Phrygian” famous Greek fabulist, and the world of “Arabian Nights” with the tale entitled “Sinkarib and two viziers.” Finally, we conclude on the interest of this great figure of Ummānu or advise the king - nor a warrior hero, nor a saint hero, but a language man - for the history of rhetoric

Annotation:
The respiratory development of two species of teleost, Oncorhynchus mykiss and Scophthalmus maximus was investigated to identify any possible periods of reduced respiratory fitness during early development. The two species were selected because of their different development strategies to allow any common factors in respiratory development to be identified. The study included determination of the respiratory oxygen demand and the critical oxygen tension (Pc) through early development for both species. Respiratory oxygen demand was measured as a routine rate (rVO2) with individual and weight specific values being determined. The main respiratory surface areas for both species were measured, this included the gills; body area; fin area and yolk-sac area in the case of O. mykiss. Changes in the rate of development was monitored by determining the mass and length specific development relationships. Significant changes in body fin and yolk-sac area occurred at approximately 70mg yolkless wet weight. for O. mykiss, gill area development was found to change at approximately 110mg. Similar changes in rate of fin and body area occurred for S. maximus at approximately 3.5mg wet weight, while gill development changed at 6.8mg. The change in epidermal thickness was measured during the development of S. maximus larvae and fry. During the larval development fin and body epithelium were significantly different up to 4.6mg wet weight with fin area being significantly thinner. Epidermal thickness increased from 2µm to 23µm over the 35 day period of monitoring. The degree of vascularisation of the yolk-sac of O. mykiss larvae was measured and found to remain relatively constant at approximately 41%. up to 70mg wet weight before declining. Mean minimum diffusion distances increased from approximately 13. 5µm to 35µm over the life-span of the yolk-sac. The change in erythrocyte type was also monitored during this period and found to decline in a similar manner to yolk-sac area. O. mykiss larvae reared under hypoxic conditions showed reductions in growth towards the end of the period of endogenous feeding, as well as increased development of gill area and increased levels of vascularisation (up to 10%) of the yolk-sac. compared to normoxic reared larvae. A study of the effects of removal of the respiratory pigment at different stages of development was also undertaken. This allowed the significance of haemoglobin during development of both species of fish to be estimated. Respiratory fitness was inhibited in both species with reductions of up to 2mg02/l in the Pc for O. mykiss, and 2. 5mg02/l for S. maximus. However, S. maximus showed a high level of dependence on haemoglobin for gaseous exchange during a short phase of development from 9.5 to 15mg wet weight were removal of haemoglobin caused 100% mortality in treated fish. Overall the study showed the low level of respiratory flexibility of S. maximus when compared to O. mykiss, especially during early development. This must have significant importance for the intensive mass culture of the larvae of this species. The important role cutaneous respiration plays during the early development of both species was also highlighted.

AbstractThe temperature, precipitation, and snow-cover data collected at the meteorological stations in the Slovenia’s Dinaric Karst region between 1961 and 2020 indicate rapid and clear climate change. During this period, temperatures increased by 2.5 °C on average, precipitation decreased by 50–400 mm on average, and the number of days with snow cover declined by 30–60%. Several studies have confirmed that these changes have a strong impact on water conditions. What is alarming is especially a decrease in the average minimum and mean discharges, and a downward trend can also be observed for many average maximum discharges.Over the past sixty years, the climate in Slovenia’s Dinaric Karst region has become warmer and drier, and there has been a significant reduction in the volume of water at most gauging stations in the area studied. Based on the trends described, a significantly smaller flood hazard would be expected, but data from the past decades suggest the opposite. The following are highlighted as possible reasons for the current flood hazard: upward trends in absolute maximum discharges in individual river basins, a slightly downward trend in absolute maximum discharges and their simultaneously greater variability, various forms of land development that used to be avoided due to the risk of flooding, and more frequent short-term extreme precipitation events causing flash floods on smaller streams.

AbstractThis contribution examines the function of lists in Roman historiography. It considers passages from Cicero’s rhetorical works (on the Annales Maximi), Tacitus’ Histories, the emperor Augustus’ Res Gestae, and Gregory of Tours’ Historia Francorum. The relationship of lists and narrativity is the central focus of the investigation. Moreover, it sheds light on the medium of writing that is crucial for the lists under consideration, the role of bureaucracy and administration, and the entanglement of list-keeping and political and religious power.

In ASME Code Section III NB-3222.4 fatigue evaluations, selecting stress states to determine the stress cycles according to Section NB-3216.2, Varying Principal Stress Direction, can become a challenging and complex task if the transient stress conditions are the result of multiple independent time varying stressors. This paper will describe an automated method that identifies the relative minimum and maximum stress states in a component’s transient stress time history and fulfills the criteria of NB-3216.2 and NB-3222.4. Utilization of the method described ensures that all meaningful stress states are identified in each transient’s stress time history. The method is very effective in identifying the maximum total stress range that can occur between any real or postulated transient stress time histories. In addition, the method ensures that the maximum primary plus secondary stress range is also identified, even if it is out of phase with the total stress maxima and minima. The method includes a process to determine if a primary plus secondary stress relative minimum or maximum should be considered in addition to those stress states identified in the total stress time history. The method is suitable for use in design analysis applications as well as in on-line stress and fatigue monitoring.

Abstract. This paper presents a new method to estimate maximum drifts, relative displacements between adjacent floors, of all stories of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) shear structures using only one floor’s absolute acceleration time history response under the ground excitation. The absolute acceleration and relative displacement are formulated in modal coordinates and the state-space expression is derived. Then the numerical simulation for a three-story structure was conducted to verify the performance of the state-space equation. The comparison of the estimated state and input with actual values is made and shows the good agreement. In addition, the relative displacement time histories of all floors were obtained, and the errors of maximum displacements and inter-story drifts were analyzed. The robustness against environmental noise was also investigated by numerical simulations as well. The results of simulations indicate the estimation is satisfactory, and very robust against the environmental disturbance.

Abstract For seismic analyses of linear structural systems including soil-structure systems, the current practice (e.g., the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Standard Review Plan (SRP) (NUREG-0800 [1], “Standard Review Plan for the Review of Safety Analysis Reports for Nuclear Power Plants: LWR Edition”) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)/Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Standard 4-16 [2], “Seismic Analysis of Safety-Related Nuclear Structures”) allows for estimating mean seismic responses by using as few as four or five input time histories. This paper examined whether this practice can achieve a stable mean response by explicitly considering the uncertainty in the Fourier phase spectra of the input time histories and exploring how this uncertainty can affect the coefficient of variation (CV) of the in-structure response spectra (ISRS). ISRS are the response spectra of the seismic response time history at a location in the structure subjected to an input seismic time history. We found that the maximum CVISRS across all frequencies is around 40% purely due to the uncertainty in the Fourier phase spectra for a typical range of design earthquakes for U.S. nuclear power plants. To estimate a mean ISRS within ±10% of the true mean ISRS, our analyses showed that this level of CVISRS may require a minimum of 16 input time histories for a confidence level (CL) of 68% and 61 for a CL of 95% for soil-structure systems of low fundamental frequencies. For stiffer systems (for example, with a fundamental frequency of 5 hertz (Hz)), the maximum CVISRS is about 30%, and thus, the minimum required number of input time histories may be reduced to 9 for a CL of 68% and 35 for a CL of 95%. In summary, the four or five time histories in the current practice may not be sufficient for estimating stable mean responses, especially for soil-structure systems with very low frequencies.

To mitigate the domestic effects of the inflationary pressures arising in the global economy as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and Russio-Ukranian war, the Government of Hungary maximised the price of several goods essential to the population. An early example of this direct intervention into the price-setting mechanism of the markets was the Edict on Maximum Prices (Edictum de Pretiis Rerum Venalium) issued by Diocletian in 301 AD, which-together with Diocletian’s currency reform-tried to solve the enormous inflation that plagued the third-century Roman Empire. The Diocletian edict and the Hungarian government decrees introducing price caps are very similar, both in their root causes, their legal policy aims, their technical solutions, as well as in the sanctions that they impose on those breaching the law. The failure of the Diocletian reforms provides useful lessons for policy-makers today.

Data on historic floods along the Danube River exist since the year 1012. In the Middle Ages, floods were estimated based on historical documents, including original handwritten notes, newspaper articles, chronicles, formal letters, books, maps and photographs. From 1500 until the beginning of organized water regime observations, floods were hydraulically reconstructed based on water marks on old buildings in cities along the Danube (Passau, Melk, Emmersdorf an der Donau, Spilz, Schonbuhen and Bratislava). The paper presents a procedure for assessing the statistical significance of registered historic floods using a comprehensive method for defining theoretical flood hydrographs at hydrological stations. The approach is based on correlation analysis of two basic flood hydrograph parameters – maximum hydrograph ordinate (peak) and flood wave volume. The PROIL model is used to define the probability of simultaneous occurrence of these parameters. It defines the exceedance probability of two random variables, in the specific case two hydrograph parameters of the form: P{Qmax more equal to qmax,p)∩(Wmax more equal to wmax,p)} = P (1) where: Qmax – maximum hydrograph ordinate (peak); qmax,p – maximum discharge of the probability of occurrence p; Wmax – maximum hydrograph volume; wmax,p – maximum flood wave volume of the probability of occurrence p; P – exceedance probability. Spatial positions of the lines of exceedance of two flood hydrograph parameters and the empirical points of the corresponding parameters of the considered historic flood in the correlation field Qmax - Wmax, allow direct assessment of the exceedance probability of a historic flood, or its statistical significance. The proposed procedure was applied in practice to assess the statistical significance of the biggest floods registered along the Danube in the sector from its mouth to the Djerdap 1 Dam. The linear trend in the time-series of maximum annual flows at a representative hydrological station and the frequency of historic floods in the considered sector of the Danube are discussed at the end of the paper.

Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC) developed a neural network-based regression method for predicting maximum stress per flight values at four structural tracking locations on the United States Air Force HH-60G helicopter airframe using Individual Vehicle Health and Usage Monitoring (IVHMS) data. Maximum stress per flight is utilized when evaluating a failure criterion within the HH-60G service life analysis, so an accurate, fleet-wide estimation of maximum stress magnitude and likelihood is critical for accurate service life determinations. The model was trained using parametric flight data time histories (from IVHMS) and stress time histories from a strain survey aircraft. The stress time histories were developed from the strain signals using two different methods depending on the location of strain gauges in the vicinity of the tracking locations. For two of the tracking locations, they were derived from a global finite element model using a collection of strain gauge signals throughout the strain survey aircraft. At the other two tracking locations, the strain time histories were derived from single strain gauges installed in close proximity to the tracking locations. Multiple regression methods and input data configurations were evaluated in order to identify an appropriate regression method that predicts a maximum stress per flight accurately without over-fitting the training data. MERC identified that the relationship between parametric flight data and aircraft component strain can be exploited to a high level of accuracy using machine learning regression tools. Achieving a high level of accuracy required an extensive review of independent and dependent variable data quality and thoughtful consideration of model inputs.

Abstract In this study, surface temperature maps of three turbocharger turbine wheels subject to three different tests, were generated using Thermal History Coatings (THCs). THCs are ceramic-based sensor coatings doped with a luminescent ingredient and the coating luminescence permanently changes with temperature. Therefore THCs can be used to assess temperatures post-test (i.e. offline). A parallel study was performed to optimize the THC application to the turbine wheels because of their complex geometry by deliberately altering the THC application parameters between the three wheels. An initial comparison of the THC data to Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) simulations of each test was also made. The THC-derived temperature profiles measured reflected the test conditions each wheel was subject to. The wheel temperatures were generally hottest at the blade leading edges and decreased radially towards their hubs. The surface resolution of the temperature maps was 1–2 mm and there was good coverage across the wheel surfaces. Some THC erosion occurred at the leading edge of the wheel exposed to the most extreme environment, but the coating was not optimized for this particular test. The coating applied to one turbine wheel showed the most success, with excellent durability along the blade leading and precise blade-to-blade measurements. The initial CHT/THC comparison for this turbine wheel was very promising, with the vast majority of points showing a temperature difference < 10 °C at like-for-like surface locations for the case of one wheel. Concluding, THC technology was successfully used to profile temperatures of turbocharger turbine wheels. Future work aims to apply thermal history coating technology to further turbocharger development (e.g. E-Turbo applications) and on other inaccessible turbocharger components (e.g. bearing cartridges).

The definition of orthoepy as “a branch of linguistics that studies pronunciation norms” tends to determine the understanding of its tasks as exclusively prescriptive, and that of orthoepy as a whole as an applied area, par excellence. Its other component, purely linguistic, is present in the problem of the correlation between the system and the norm, traditionally central to the school of Lev Shcherba. In essence, this problem is a particular case of the Saussurian “language — speech” dichotomy, which is the reason for regarding orthoepy as a purely linguistic discipline and for discerning two points of view on its object, those “from within” and “from without.” The latter implies a conscious attitude towards the choice, from several possibilities, of one unit as a normative or “correct” with the establishment of the systemic status of this unit. This point of view on language, which emerged almost simultaneously with the awareness of it as an inherently human capacity (Plato), is reflected both in the early evidence of “language prestige” (Catullus, Cicero) and in the works of “intuitive linguists,” either relying on a certain norm (Alexandrian grammarians) or creating it (English orthoepists). In turn, the norm is synonymous to speech, which exists at a given synchronic stage; it changes either as a result of the alternative possibilities offered by the system (language dynamics) or due to the transition of the system to another synchronic stage (linguistic change per se), cf. Ludmila Verbitskaya’s formulation in The Linguistic Encyclopedic Dictionary: “The phonological system of a language completely determines the pronunciation norm. The norm can change within the system provided new forms gradually replace the old ones under the influence of extralinguistic factors or as a result of changes that have taken place in the system.” In this context, the primary task of interpreters of early orthoepic evidence (first of all, historians of language) is to identify factors belonging to two fundamentally different spheres. Ignoring this circumstance in the research procedures, characteristic of (chronologically or ideologically) pre–Saussurian (pre–Baudouin de Courtenay) linguistics, leads to a confusion of factors, including systemic and extra–linguistic ones, and, moreover, of the fundamental notions, (diachronic) change and (synchronic) variation, which, among other things, is reflected in the idea of ‘recent changes’ in the system (in fact, in the norm) and in the popular notion of “language in the state of (constant) flux.” On the contrary, the consistent differentiation, in research procedures, of different factors interacting in the functioning of language system, and thus discerning between the two points of view on it, “from within” and “from without,” makes orthoepy an integral part of linguistics as a fundamental science of language, providing theoretical justification for its applied component, the latter’s goals having been formulated, for all times, as a maxime to “speak properly and correctly.” Refs 29.

The geological history of the Canadian Shield is difficult to constrain because the sedimentary record is missing in those areas where Precambrian basement is exposed at the surface. This study presents preliminary results and interpretations of new apatite fission-track (AFT) analyses to elucidate the low-temperature (<120°C) history across Canada. The AFT modelling of samples from Southampton Island, in Nunavut, indicates that maximum temperatures varied between 62°C and 93°C during the Phanerozoic. Maximum burial occurred in the Devonian, but a second phase of Mesozoic burial is proposed, especially in the case for the sample recovered closest to the northern island-bounding normal faults. The AFT modelling of a sample from northern Ontario indicates that a maximum burial temperature of approximately 75°C was reached during the Late Devonian. Overall, these results demonstrate that the Hudson Bay sedimentary succession is the remnant of a more extensive and thicker sedimentary cover than is preserved. This study also provides the opportunity to discuss innovative methodology and modelling approaches for low-temperature thermochronology.

This study explored the use of artificial neural networks to predict UHPC compressive strengths given thermal history and key mix components. The model developed herein employs Bayesian variational inference using Monte Carlo dropout to convey prediction uncertainty using 735 datapoints on seven UHPC mixtures collected using a variety of techniques. Datapoints contained a measured compressive strength along with three curing inputs (specimen maturity, maximum temperature experienced during curing, time of maximum temperature) and five mixture inputs to distinguish each UHPC mixture (cement type, silicon dioxide content, mix type, water to cementitious material ratio, and admixture dosage rate). Input analysis concluded that predictions were more sensitive to curing inputs than mixture inputs. On average, 8.2% of experimental results in the final model fell outside of the predicted range with 67.9%of these cases conservatively underpredicting. The results support that this model methodology is able to make sufficient probabilistic predictions within the scope of the provided dataset but is not for extrapolating beyond the training data. In addition, the model was vetted using various datasets obtained from literature to assess its versatility. Overall this model is a promising advancement towards predicting mechanical properties of high strength concrete with known uncertainties.

The Montney Formation in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada is an early Triassic siltstone currently in an active diagenetic environment at depths greater than 1,000 m, but with maximum burial depths potentially exceeding 5,000 m (Ness, 2001). It has undergone multiple phases of burial and uplift and there is strong evidence for multiple generations of hydrocarbon maturation/migration. Understanding the origin and history of diagenetic fluids within these systems helps to unravel the chemical changes that have occurred since deposition. Many cores taken near the deformation front display abundant calcite-filled fractures including vertical or sub-vertical, bedding plane parallel (beefs), and brecciated horizons with complex mixtures of vertical and horizontal components. We analyzed vertical and brecciated horizons to assess the timing and origin of fluid flow and its implications for diagenetic history of the Montney Fm. Aqueous and petroleum bearing fluid inclusions were observed in both vertical and brecciated zones; however, they did not occur in the same fluid inclusion assemblages. Petroleum inclusions occur as secondary fluid inclusions (e.g. in healed fractures and along cleavage planes) alongside primary aqueous inclusions indicating petroleum inclusions post-date aqueous inclusions and suggest multiple phases of fluid flow is recorded within these fractures. Raman spectroscopy of aqueous inclusions also display no evidence of petroleum compounds supporting the absence or low abundance of petroleum fluids during the formation of aqueous fluid inclusions. Pressure-corrected trapping temperatures (>140°C) are likely associated with the period of maximum burial during the Laramide orogeny based on burial history modelling. Ice melt temperatures of aqueous fluid inclusions are consistent with 19% NaCl equiv. brine and eutectic temperatures (-51°C) indicate NaCl-CaCl2 composition. Combined use of aqueous and petroleum fluid inclusions in deeply buried sedimentary systems offers a promising tool for better understanding the diagenetic fluid history and helps constrain the pressure-temperature history important for characterizing economically important geologic formations.

Brine strings are essential components of both natural gas and liquid hydrocarbon storage caverns. Both the natural gas and liquid hydrocarbon storage industries are well aware that a limit exists for the fluid velocity in the injection tubulars in their storage caverns. If the brine injection or brine withdrawal velocity is gradually increased, eventually, the hanging tubular will experience flow-induced vibration, resulting in the potential for the hanging tubulars to bend and/or break. Additionally, in both types of hydrocarbon storage, salt falls can impact the brine string integrity.Result: The magnitude of the velocity limit for flow-induced vibration of the hanging tubulars in salt caverns is not known. In the absence of a clearly defined method for determining the maximum allowable fluid velocities in the hanging tubulars, much of industry has attempted to adopt a conservative maximum flow velocity based on "industry experience". Sometimes this works and sometimes it does not. The objective of this project is to better define the causes of brine string failure and failure mitigation technologies. The project (1) compiled case histories of successful brine string installations as well as brine string failures in solution mining, liquid hydrocarbon storage, and gas cavern dewatering; (2) evaluated case histories with models (proposed in the literature) for brine strings that have not failed as well as brine strings that have experienced failure; and (3) developed recommendations for maximizing brine string integrity.

Design requirements for hydrogen pipelines are still evolving. Although there are several hundred miles of hydrogen pipelines throughout the world, most hydrogen pipelines are designed to transport hydrogen only short distances, from the production facility to the end-user. Many such applications typically represent only a few hundred feet of pipeline and operate with maximum pressures of considerably less than the 1,000 psi absolute (psia) or more that would likely be required for long-distance pipeline transmission of hydrogen. The safety record for these pipelines is considered to be very good. This safe history notwithstanding, the definition of required safety margins, codes, and standards for application to large-scale hydrogen transport remains a work in progress. It is therefore not possible at this time to definitively specify the design details of hydrogen transmission pipelines. However, based on the design parameters of some hydrogen pipelines and on experience with natural gas pipelines, it is reasonable to suggest some design parameters that could very well be applicable to the flow rates, distances, and pressures associated with the long-distance transmission of hydrogen via pipeline.

Alligatorweed leaf spot is a disease of invasive Alternanthera philoxeroides (Alligatorweed) in the southern US, caused by Alternaria alternantherae. However, little is known about when or where this pathogen naturally occurs. To better understand this species’ life history, we examined temporal (every 2–3 weeks) and spatial (latitudinal) patterns of A. alternantherae occurrence at sites in Louisiana for 2 y. Pathogen presence reflected clear within-year temporal and spatial patterns. Overall, the percentage of leaves infected with A. alternantherae was low during spring each year (0–20% infected) but increased throughout summer (maximum of 50% infected), and plants in northern sites had lower frequency of infection relative to southern sites until later in the year (late summer/early fall) but only in 1 of the 2 years of our study. The mean proportion of leaves infected with A. alternantherae declined with latitude both years (P = 0.01) and variability increased with latitude (P = 0.04), a pattern suggestive of range limitation in northern areas. We estimate a northern distributional limit of 34°N for A. alternantherae in Louisiana, but Alligatorweed occurs farther north. Although we did not directly examine disease impacts to Alligatorweed during the study, they may be greatest in southern areas, where the pathogen is more common early and throughout the growing season, and thus may be less likely to provide control in northern infestations of the invasive Alligatorweed.

This report provides an integrated look at climate, groundwater, and springs conditions at Chiricahua National Monument (NM), Coronado National Memorial (NMem), and Fort Bowie National Historic Site (NHS) during water year (WY) 2019 (October 2018–September 2019). Overall annual precipitation at Chiricahua NM and Coronado NMem in WY2019 was approximately the same as the normals for 1981–2010. (The weather station at Fort Bowie NHS had missing values on 275 days, so data were not presented for that park.) Fall and winter rains were greater than normal. The monsoon season was generally weaker than normal, but storm events related to Hurricane Lorena led to increased late-season rain in September. Mean monthly maximum temperatures were generally cooler than normal at Chiricahua, whereas mean monthly minimum temperatures were warmer than normal. Temperatures at Coronado were more variable relative to normal. The reconnaissance drought index (RDI) indicated that Chiricahua NM was slightly wetter than normal. (The WY2019 RDI could not be calculated for Coronado NMem due to missing data.) The five-year moving mean of annual precipitation showed both park units were experiencing a minor multi-year precipitation deficit relative to the 39-year average. Mean groundwater levels in WY2019 increased at Fort Bowie NHS, and at two of three wells monitored at Chiricahua NM, compared to WY2018. Levels in the third well at Chiricahua slightly decreased. By contrast, water levels declined in five of six wells at Coronado NMem over the same period, with the sixth well showing a slight increase over WY2018. Over the monitoring record (2007–present), groundwater levels at Chiricahua have been fairly stable, with seasonal variability likely caused by transpiration losses and recharge from runoff events in Bonita Creek. At Fort Bowie’s WSW-2, mean groundwater level was also relatively stable from 2004 to 2019, excluding temporary drops due to routine pumping. At Coronado, four of the six wells demonstrated increases (+0.30 to 11.65 ft) in water level compared to the earliest available measurements. Only WSW-2 and Baumkirchner #3 have shown net declines (-17.31 and -3.80 feet, respectively) at that park. Springs were monitored at nine sites in WY2019 (four sites at Chiricahua NM; three at Coronado NMem, and two at Fort Bowie NHS). Most springs had relatively few indications of anthropogenic or natural disturbance. Anthropogenic disturbance included modifications to flow, such as dams, berms, or spring boxes. Examples of natural disturbance included game trails, scat, or evidence of flooding. Crews observed 0–6 facultative/obligate wetland plant taxa and 0–3 invasive non-native species at each spring. Across the springs, crews observed six non-native plant species: common mullein (Verbascum thapsus), spiny sowthistle (Sonchus asper), common sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus), Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana), rabbitsfoot grass (Polypogon monspeliensis), and red brome (Bromus rubens). Baseline data on water quality and water chemistry were collected at all nine sites. It is likely that that all nine springs had surface water for at least some part of WY2019, though temperature sensors failed at two sites. The seven sites with continuous sensor data had water present for most of the year. Discharge was measured at eight sites and ranged from < 1 L/minute to 16.5 L/minute.

We investigate seismic attenuation characteristics of the Charlevoix Seismic Zone. This zone is located ~100 km downstream from Quebec City and is the most seismically active region of eastern Canada. We used earthquake recordings from 8 seismograph stations of the Canadian National Seismic Network (CNSN) across the region. Our dataset is comprised of 584 earthquakes recorded between 1992 and 2022 with magnitudes ranging from 2.0 to 5.4, depths from 0 to 30 km and epicentral distances of 5 to 100 km. This gives a total of 1490 high signal-to-noise (S/N) traces (S/N?5.0) useful for QC calculation (with a maximum ellipse parameter, a2, of 100) across the region. Coda windows were selected to start at tc = 2tS (two times the travel time of the direct S wave), and were filtered at center frequencies of 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 Hz. Our study reveals a consistent pattern. We find that the highest Q0 (Q at 1 Hz) values are at station A11 (e.g., Q0 of 109), that is the farthest station from the 1663, M~7 earthquake (D=40 km), excluding the new station of CACQ. The lowest Q0 values that we find are at the station A16 (e.g., Q0 of 72) that is the second closest station to the epicenter of the 1663 earthquake (D=16 km) after station A61 (D=10 km). Also, we find the lowest overall average Q0 values at station A16 (e.g., Q0 of 72). In general, Q0 is lower in the vicinity of large earthquakes (Jin & Aki, 1988). Therefore, the low Q0 values at station A16 may suggest that the 1663 earthquake is located slightly southeast of the catalog epicenter, considering high uncertainty associated with historic events. An average for all the data results in a Q relationship of QC = 81f1.06 for the frequency band of 2 to 16 Hz for the entire region.
