<p>Whalley, Mavros and Furniss (this issue) explore questions of agency, control and interaction, as well as the embodied nature of musical performance in relation to the use of human-computer interaction through the work <em>Clasp Together (beta) </em>for small ensemble and live electronics. The underlying concept of the piece focuses on direct mapping of a human neural network (embodied by a performer within the ensemble) to an artificial neural network running on a computer. With our commentary, we contextualize the work by offering a brief history of music that uses brainwaves. We review the use of EEG signals for musical performance and point at precedents in EEG-based musical practice. We hope to more clearly situate <em>Clasp Together (beta)</em> in the broad area of Brain Computer Musical Interfaces and discuss the challenges and opportunities that these technologies offer for composers.</p>

Grape skins and seeds are sources of various quality characters of grapevine varieties, such as phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, resveratrol etc. The Greek vineyard is characterized by a large number of indigenous grapevine varieties which remain almost unexploited in terms of their different phenolic content. The aim of this study was to assay the polyphenolic content of seven red native Greek grapevine varieties (‘Kolliniatiko’, ‘Bekari’, ‘Bakouri’, ‘Kountoura mavri’, ‘Doubrena mavri’, ‘Thrapsa’, and ‘Mavro Spetson’) using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a diode array detector and spectrophotometer. All studied varieties were cultivated in the same area and under the same conditions. The results revealed that despite the fact that anthocyanins and phenolic compounds content were in high levels for all varieties, statistically significant differences were recorded among them. The highest anthocyanins concentration was recorded in ‘Kolliniatiko’, while the lowest anthocyanins concentration was recorded in ‘Mavro Spetson’. Grapevine variety ‘Mavro Spetson’ presented the highest concentration of total phenolic compounds, with statistically significant difference compared to ‘Kountoura mavri’ and ‘Bekari’. Grapevine varieties ‘Kolliniatiko’ and ‘Bekari’ presented the highest concentrations in trans-resveratrol and piceid content, while grapevine variety ‘Doubrena mavri’ presented the highest concentration in vanillin content. These unexploited rare native cultivated varieties contained appreciable amounts of non-colored phenols as well as anthocyanins, meaning that they would be worthy of further study and use for the production of quality wines.

Twenty-one grapevine varieties grown all over Greece and belonging to ‘Mavroudia’ group were ampelographically described and genotyped by AFLP molecular analysis in order to discriminate the varieties, synonyms, homonyms and variations of the group. In most cases, the molecular findings confirmed the results of the ampelographic description. In general, and despite the high degree of genetic similarity between certain pairs of the studied cultivars, the group of ‘Mavroudia’ was characterized as being heterogeneous. From the studied cultivars, ‘Kountoura mavri’, ‘Mavro Spetson’ and ‘Pappoudes’ showed very high degree of genetic similarity, sustaining the hypothesis that the last two are clones of the first. Grapevine cultivar ‘Pappoudes’ was for the first time ampelographically described and identified as being closely related to ‘Kountoura mavri’. High degree of genetic similarity was observed between cultivars ‘Gaidouricha’ and ‘Agiomavritiko’, suggesting that they probably originated from the same parent variety through the accumulation of mutations. This may also be true for cultivars ‘Mavrokorakas’ and ‘Kartsiotis’. Also, the results from the statistical analysis showed that ‘Mavro Arachovis’, ‘Mavroudi Voulgarias’ and ‘Voulgaroudes’, despite the relatively high genetic similarity between them, are different. The same applies for the rest of the cultivars studied, while ‘Mavro Kalavriton’, the most widespread variety of the ‘Mavroudia’ group, showed the lowest degree of genetic similarity within the all the cultivars studied. The ampelographic description in combination with the molecular method AFLP are effective for the study of the between and within genetic diversity of grapevine cultivars as well as for their identification and discrimination.

The purpose of this article is to study I. Stravinsky’s opera «Mavra» in the aspect of embodiment of «universals» (by S. Savenko) of the composer’s orchestral logic and usage of specific devices of orchestration, spawned by original artistic idea and genre traits of the opera. The article applies such methods of this scientific research as genre, historical and system-functional. The scientific novelty of the investigative article is caused by the fact, that it is foremost research in domestic musicology of specifics of «Mavra’s» orchestral writing on intersection of general and singular. Conclusions. The analysis of orchestral writing in «Mavra» allowed us to draw the following conclusions a namely specifics of orchestral writing are caused by peculiarities of selected model’s genre as well as by orientation towards the theatre of representation; orchestral writing reveals multi-figure and combinative principles, which, if one is to use the terms of S. Savenko, might be described as «universals» of orchestral writing; specifics of orchestral writing is defined by the interaction of the two projection of I. Stravinsky’s orchestral logic: general and singular (special); composer tends to use multi-figure and combinative methods in a concealed way, with some transfigurations (rhythmic-intonation configuration of figures is being reduced as they become akin to formulae), that reflects universal artistic inclination towards game and variative thinking on multiple levels of artistically-aesthetic integrity; timbre and texture structure of the opera is marked by lack of full string group in the orchestra, relatively rare changes of timbres and timbre combinations compared to early ballets, smaller quantity of timbre combinations on the vertical axis, more pronounced continuity of time; omission of complicated combinative and multi-figure composition principles, that causes the orchestral space to be dimensional.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether or not mavens’ dissemination activities are likely to promote or hinder retailers’ store brand premiumisation attempts, by revealing the relationship between mavens’ price and non-price on-pack extrinsic cue search and their store brand purchasing behaviours. Design/methodology/approach The paper adopts a hypothetic-deductive approach and develops a model of mavens’ store brand purchasing behaviour. The model is tested using SEM on a US data set containing 457 respondents. A full discussion of the direct, indirect and total effects is provided. Findings Mavens’ store brand purchasing behaviours are strongly linked to their price search activities and negatively related to their use of non-price on-pack extrinsic cues. This indicates that their dissemination activities are likely to stress lower prices and hence price competition rather than promote other cues used to infer quality. Thus, mavens are likely to inhibit retailers’ store brand premiumisation attempts. Mavens’ investments in time engaged in search activities are strongly linked to social returns rather than private financial savings. Research limitations/implications The work is based on data collected using an online survey in one region of the USA where store brands are not as prevalent in other countries such as the UK. Practical implications The investigation of non-price on-pack extrinsic cues reduces mavens’ store brand purchasing behaviours while the use of price cues increases them. This suggests that even with mavens’ market expertise that a non-price extrinsic cue deficit continues to exist for these products. Consequently, retailers need to re-examine and rework the cues contained on pack to convey more positive consumption-related information if mavens are to become store brand advocates. Originality/value Rather than conceptualising the maven as possessing market wide knowledge, this research adopts a domain specific perspective arguing that price mavenism can be distinguished from product-related mavenism with consequences for the set of extrinsic cues used as part of the maven’s search process. In doing so, it reveals the conflicting effects that these maven dimensions have on purchasing behaviours and the likely effects on mavens’ dissemination activities.

The research focus is individuals who have information about many kinds of products, places to shop, and other facets of the market, and initiate discussions with and respond to information requests from other consumers. Specifically, the authors develop a Likert-type scale to measure consumers’ propensity to provide general shopping and marketplace information. Consumers scoring high on this scale are referred to as “market mavens.” Based on a national sample of 1531 households, the findings indicate that market mavens exist and that other consumers recognize them. Consumers believe market mavens are influential in their purchasing decisions. The authors document the distinctness of market mavens from other influencers. They test several propositions about the market attitudes and behaviors of market mavens, but find no clear socioeconomic and demographic profile of these influencers. The results have implications for marketing managers and suggest a reexamination of the approach to information diffusion.

With growing competition and the increasing complexity of commercial information, interpersonal communication continues to be important to marketers. Market mavens, those consumers with general product knowledge that act as disseminators of product information, play a central role in influencing others’ purchase decisions. Previous research, which has focused on mavens’ demographics and media consumption, has neglected the motives that drive these consumer communicators. From a survey of 326 consumers, we explore how those respondents ranked high on the maven scale differ in terms of their motivations to engage in word‐of‐mouth behavior from those scoring lower on the maven scale. Our results indicate that market mavens, compared with moderate and non‐mavens, are motivated to a greater extent by a sense of obligation to share information, a desire to help others, and feelings of pleasure associated with informing others about products. The relationship between initial information diffusion, maven group, and the investigated motivations are also explored. Implications for marketers targeting mavens are offered.

Petrarchan characteristics of his poetry cannot be linked only to the patterns of love poetry of the time, but became a sort of spreading of Petrarch?s language and motifs that face secular love and religious moral values which Christian Renaissance tended to preserve.

Mavo Create provides the data storage and computation abilities of Mavo through the interface of a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) editor. Mavo extends HTML, providing attributes that one can use to set up data storage for a web application. This data can be created, amended, and populated into the web application use Mavo attributes. Further, Mavo provides expressions for performing computations on the data and visualizing the results of those computations in the Mavo application. One limitation of Mavo is that a user must know or become familiar with HTML in order to use Mavo. Mavo Create attempts to abstract away the programming part of using Mavo by providing a visual website editor that can be used to create Mavo applications. Mavo Create was built using GrapesJS, a WYSIWYG website template creation application. Mavo Create uses drag-and-drop HTML elements with WYSIWYG editing for styling and for adding Mavo capabilities. After creating the template of a Mavo application in Mavo Create, one can download source code and begin using his application. The goal of Mavo Create is to make the creation of Mavo applications accessible to people who do not know HTML or programming.

Annotation:
In the following work, the MAVRIC sequence of the Scale6.1 code package was tested for its efficacy in calculating a wide range of shielding parameters with respect to HTGRs. One of the NGNP designs that has gained large support internationally is the VHTR. The development of the Scale6.1 code package at ORNL has been primarily directed towards supporting the current United States' reactor fleet of LWR technology. Since plans have been made to build a prototype VHTR, it is important to verify that the MAVRIC sequence can adequately meet the simulation needs of a different reactor technology. This was accomplished by creating a detailed model of the VHTR power plant; identifying important, relevant radiation indicators; and implementing methods using MAVRIC to simulate those indicators in the VHTR model. The graphite moderator used in the design shapes a different flux spectrum than water-moderated reactors. The different flux spectrum could lead to new considerations when quantifying shielding characteristics and possibly a different gamma-ray spectrum escaping the core and surrounding components. One key portion of this study was obtaining personnel dose rates in accessible areas within the power plant from both neutron and gamma sources. Additionally, building from professional and regulatory standards a surveillance capsule monitoring program was designed to mimic those used in the nuclear industry. The high temperatures were designed to supply heat for industrial purposes and not just for power production. Since tritium, a heavier radioactive isotope of hydrogen, is produced in the reactor it is important to know the distribution of tritium production and the subsequent diffusion from the core to secondary systems to prevent contamination outside of the nuclear island. Accurately modeling indicators using MAVRIC is the main goal. However, it is almost equally as important for simulations to be carried out in a timely manner. MAVRIC uses the discrete ordinates method to solve the fixed-source transport equation for both neutron and gamma rays on a crude geometric representation of the detailed model. This deterministic forward solution is used to solve an adjoint equation with the adjoint source specified by the user. The adjoint solution is then used to create an importance map that can weight particles in a stochastic Monte Carlo simulation. The goal of using this hybrid methodology is to provide complete accuracy with high precision while decreasing overall simulation times by orders of magnitude. The MAVRIC sequence provides a platform to quickly alter inputs so that vastly different shielding studies can be simulated using one model with minimal effort by the user. Each separate shielding study required unique strategies while looking at different regions in the VHTR plant. MAVRIC proved to be effective for each case.

Giant viruses infecting unicellular eukaryotes have genomes that overlap in size and coding content with the smallest cellular life forms, thereby blurring the boundary between what is considered living and non-living. Due to their recent discovery, little is known about the biology and host range of giant viruses. In this dissertation, I characterize Cafeteria roenbergensis virus (CroV), the largest marine virus known to date. CroV infects the phagotrophic nanoflagellate C. roenbergensis, a widespread and ecologically important marine zooplankton species. CroV has a 730 kilobase pair DNA genome which is predicted to encode 544 proteins and 22 transfer RNAs. Four genes contained an intein insertion and several genes have not been found before in viruses, including an isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase and a histone acetyltransferase. A 38 kilobase pair region of putative bacterial origin encoded predicted enzymes for the biosynthesis of 3-deoxy-D-manno-octulosonate, a key component of the bacterial lipopolysaccharide layer. Microarray analysis revealed that at least 274 CroV genes were transcribed during infection and that different genes were expressed at early and late stages of viral replication. Promoter sequences specific for each stage were identified. Proteomic analyses showed that the virion is composed of at least 129 CroV-encoded proteins, including a large set of transcription enzymes and several DNA repair proteins. Phylogenetically, CroV was found to belong to the group of nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses and was most closely related to Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus, although only a third of the CroV genes had homologues in Mimivirus. I also discovered a smaller virus, the Mavirus virophage, whose replication was dependent on co-infection by CroV and led to decreased CroV production and increased host-cell survival. Mavirus particles co-localized within the CroV virion factory, as shown by transmission electron microscopy of infected cells. Remarkably, the 19 kilobase pair DNA genome of Mavirus was most similar to the Maverick/Polinton eukaryotic DNA transposons, which led to the hypothesis that these transposons have originated from the endogenization of ancient virophages into eukaryotic genomes. This work describes the first giant virus infecting a zooplankton species and demonstrates a clear link between Mavirus and Maverick transposons.

This study documents Mavis Taylor's teaching of Improvisation at the University of Cape Town and provides a critical analysis of the improvisational methods she uses in the training of actors. It places her teaching within the wider field of improvisation understanding the importance of knowledge of 'self for the craft of acting. There is discussion around the role of the imagination and spontaneity in actor-training, and debate is raised regarding the concepts and practice of sensory and emotional memory training. The significance of teaching structure and form as a method for students to manipulate the medium of improvisation is argued, proposing that the creation of alternative meanings and 'realities' is the essence of acting.

McKillop, Jordan M. „Reducing the activation of the IRIS reactor building using the SCALE/MAVRIC methodology“. Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/37209.

Annotation:
The main objective of this research is: (1) to develop a model and perform numerical simulations to evaluate the radiation field and the resulting dose to personnel and activation of materials and structures throughout the IRIS nuclear power plant, and (2) to confirm that the doses are below the regulatory limit, and assess the possibility to reduce the activation of the concrete walls around the reactor vessel to below the free release limit. IRIS is a new integral pressurized water reactor (PWR) developed by an international team led by Westinghouse with an electrical generation capacity of 335 MWe and passive safety systems. Its design differs from larger loop PWRs in that a single building houses the containment as well as all the associated equipment including the control room that must be staffed continuously. The resulting small footprint has positive safety and economic implications, and the integral layout provides additional shielding and thus the opportunity to significantly reduce the activation, but it also leads to significantly more challenging simulations. The difficulty in modeling the entire building is the fact that the source is attenuated over 10 orders of magnitude before ever reaching the accessible areas. For an analog Monte Carlo simulation with no acceleration (variance reduction), it would take many processor-years of computation to generate results that are statistically meaningful. Instead, to generate results for this thesis, the Standardized Computer Analyses for Licensing Evaluation (SCALE) with the package Monaco with Automated Variance Reduction using Importance Calculations (MAVRIC) will be used. This package is a hybrid methodology code where the forward and adjoint deterministic calculations provide variance reduction parameters for the Monte Carlo portion to significantly reduce the computational time. Thus, the first task will be to develop an efficient SCALE/MAVRIC model of the IRIS building. The second task will be to evaluate the dose rate and activation of materials, specifically focusing on activation of concrete walls around the reactor vessel. Finally, results and recommendations will be presented.

Annotation:
Fixed wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are widely powered by miniature brushless DC motors and mini propellers. These motors have low efficiencies in the MAVs’ operating range; hence consume more power and penalizing the endurance of MAVs flight. Mini propellers also suffer with lower efficiencies due to low Reynolds number effect compared to bigger propellers. Based on the power requirement of MAV’s; generally two bladed different size propellers are used to power these MAVs. Effect of Propeller slipstream wash on the lift generating wings is significant and it is well reported for bigger propellers. The strength of slipstream wash depends on the number of blades, diameter of the propeller, rotational speed, flight speed and trajectory. The effect of slipstream wash could be lowered by increasing the number of blades and with smaller diameter propellers. CSIR-NAL has designed, developed, and fabricated, efficient, 6inch diameter, two and three blade, light-weight, mini propellers using latest state of the art technological advancements for CSIR-NAL fixed wing MAV code named as Black Kite. Apart from this, these propellers are assessed for its realistic propulsive efficiencies using CSIR-NAL configured sophisticated precision test bench manufactured and supplied by M/s MAGTROL, Switzerland. The specialty of this test bench is that it can measure thrust, propellers shaft torque, input power and rotational speeds simultaneously. In the present study CSIR-NAL developed 6 inch diameter two and three bladed propellers of identical plan form are compared for their performance. The three bladed propellers generate 30% higher thrust by marginal weight and efficiency penalty, whereas the noise levels are reduced.
