This thesis is focused on preparation of basic elements of the National System for Support of Sustainable Tourism in the Czech Republic and on development of a methodology for ranking of selected tourist services from the sustainable point of view. Its result is planned to be used as a basis for real decisions potentially taken by the Czech government in near future. The first part analyses and summarises existing approaches worldwide to sustainable tourism, potential benefits and different impacts of tourism in order to specify possible measures avoiding unwanted impacts later on. The need to change towards sutainability in tourism is based on analysis of different policies and documents and a summary of duties of the Czech government (national ones and international ones). There is also a list of the best experiences available how to promote, support and encourage development of sustainable tourism based on analysis of the World Tourism Organisation studies and recommendations, existing EMS systems like ISO, EU ecolabel or methods, approaches, criteria and indicators used by different labels.Next part defines neccessary elements for successful system functioning in the Czech Republic, based on existing and working governmental and non-governmental structures not forgetting such important activities like information, education, marketing and motivation and sets expected responsibilities and roles of different potential partners participating on the system implementation.Unfortunately, there is no one certified tourist business in Czechia according to ISO, EMAS or EU flower before end of October 2004. Main reasons are price, missing benefits and motivations for businesses. Therefore an self-assesment questionnaire for a small-scale accommodation is developed. This fits with the „easy to understand, easy to answer“. This option is missing in the country and it is understood as a prestep to more sophisticated methods of measurment. The main sustainable criteria are set as “GUESTS“, “NATURE RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT“ (water, energy, green building, reduction of waste, soft mobility, biodiversity), “LOCAL COMMUNITIES“ (culture, economy) and “FUTURE“.The Czech Republic needs to start to implement sustainable tourism policies in practice. It should be organised in wide cross-sector partnership co-operation of profession associations, consumer associations and under the official responsibility of Ministry of Environment and Ministry for Regional Development (responsible for tourism). This thesis has been published in a shorten form during the WTO conference for Europe “Public Private Partnerships for Sustainability Certification of Tourism Activities“, taken place in October 2004 in Mariánské Lázně. Based on this presentation, conclusions and results of this thesis will be included in the project „National programme for Sustainability in Tourism“. This project will be submitted in the Czech government by both above mentioned ministries before end of 2004.

Abstract. The Cheb Basin, a region of ongoing swarm earthquake activity in the western Czech Republic, is characterized by intense carbon dioxide degassing along two known fault zones – the N–S-striking Počatky–Plesná fault zone (PPZ) and the NW–SE-striking Mariánské Lázně fault zone (MLF). The fluid pathways for the ascending CO2 of mantle origin are one of the subjects of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) project “Drilling the Eger Rift” in which several geophysical surveys are currently being carried out in this area to image the topmost hundreds of meters to assess the structural situation, as existing boreholes are not sufficiently deep to characterize it. As electrical resistivity is a sensitive parameter to the presence of conductive rock fractions as liquid fluids, clay minerals, and also metallic components, a large-scale dipole–dipole experiment using a special type of electric resistivity tomography (ERT) was carried out in June 2017 in order to image fluid-relevant structures. We used permanently placed data loggers for voltage measurements in conjunction with moving high-power current sources to generate sufficiently strong signals that could be detected all along the 6.5 km long profile with 100 and 150 m dipole spacings. After extensive processing of time series for voltage and current using a selective stacking approach, the pseudo-section is inverted, which results in a resistivity model that allows for reliable interpretations depths of up than 1000 m. The subsurface resistivity image reveals the deposition and transition of the overlying Neogene Vildštejn and Cypris formations, but it also shows a very conductive basement of phyllites and granites that can be attributed to high salinity or rock alteration by these fluids in the tectonically stressed basement. Distinct, narrow pathways for CO2 ascent are not observed with this kind of setup, which hints at wide degassing structures over several kilometers within the crust instead. We also observed gravity and GPS data along this profile in order to constrain ERT results. A gravity anomaly of ca. −9 mGal marks the deepest part of the Cheb Basin where the ERT profile indicates a large accumulation of conductive rocks, indicating a very deep weathering or alteration of the phyllitic basement due to the ascent of magmatic fluids such as CO2. We propose a conceptual model in which certain lithologic layers act as caps for the ascending fluids based on stratigraphic records and our results from this experiment, providing a basis for future drillings in the area aimed at studying and monitoring fluids.

The composer Frederic Chopin is connected with Czechia through a number of visits (in Carlsbad, Prague, Děčín, Teplice, and Marienbad) which he spent joyfully meeting his family, who lived in the Russian-occupied Poland. In Czechia, he met and fell deeply in love with Maria Wodzińska, who, unfortunately, did not reciprocate his feelings. In Prague, he became acquainted with Czech national revivalists (Václav Hanka, among others) and with famous composers of the time. In Vienna, the centre of the Habsburg monarchy, he met many Czech composers and befriended the violinist Josef Slavík. Chopin was invited to play in several Czech castles; he received a particularly warm welcome in Děčín. His music teachers in Warsaw were of Czech origin. Chopin’s numerous relationships with Czechia inspired the establishment of the Frederic Chopin Society, the international festival held in Mariánské Lázně (formerly Marienbad), and even musicological symposia. Many Czechs – poets, fiction writers, literary historians, musicians, and music scholars – emphasised how Chopin and his music influenced them. They were inspired by the many notable facts associated with Chopin’s visits and experiences in Czechia and in other locations throughout the Austrian Empire; by his romantic life, democratic thinking, personal qualities, and artistic skills. Various interesting literary works include poetry collections by Kamil Bednář, Jiří Karen, Josef Pávek, Oldřich Zemek, Karla Erbová, and a collection of three novellas by Vladislav Mareš. Apart from writing about Czech Chopin-related works and translating key Polish chopiniana into Czech, the author of this study focuses mainly on the interpretation of the relations between literature and music in the works of the these Polish writers: Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Tadeusz Łopalewski, Janina Siwkowska, Maria Kuncewiczowa, Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski, Jerzy Broszkiewicz, Mira Jaworczakowa and more.

The Soos National Nature Reserve nearby Františkovy Lázně Town (Western Bohemia, Czech Republic) is a spectacular peatbog site with the occurrence of fens on numerous mineral spring effluents, emanations of pure carbon dioxide in mofettes (i.e. false mud volcanoes), parts with saltwater wetlands, and diatomite mantel in its central part. These natural conditions affect general character of all habitats, vegetation and malacocoenoses in the reserve. Altogether, 31 mollusc species were found there, but only two of them are considered as near threatened (Pisidium obtusale and Vertigo substriata). The majority of recorded assemblage was composed of common and generalist mollusc species.

An extraordinary rich supergene mineral association (about 20 determined mineral species) has been discovered in an active marble quarry Smrčník located at NW slope of the hill Smrčník (799 m a.s.l.), 2 km NW of the village Lipová-Lázně, 7 km WNW of Jeseník, Rychlebské hory Mountains, Czech Republic. The origin of supergene minerals is connected with weathering of primary sulphides (galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite) in quartz-calcite hydrotermal vein in the conditions of supergene zone in-situ. The most common supergene mineral is cerussite, quite abundant are anglesite, phosphohedyphane, hemimorphite, malachite, chrysocolla, fornacite and vauquelinite. Other determined minerals are rare: aurichalcite, caledonite, cesàrolite, conichalcite, descloizite, duftite, leadhillite, linarite, mottramite, plumbojarosite, rosasite and wulfenite. The detailed descriptions, X-ray powder diffraction data, refined unit-cell parameters and quantitative chemical composition of individual studied mineral phases are presented.

This paper presents results of a malacological survey of four small tributaries of the brook Javorka near Lázně Bělohrad in East Bohemia (Czech Republic). Only 15 species of aquatic molluscs (7 gastropods, 8 bivalves) were found at 31 sites during research realised in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Molluscan assemblages of all tributaries were similar and consisted of common and widespread molluscs as Galba truncatula, Radix peregra, Anodonta anatina, Pisidium subtruncatum or P. casertanum. The occurrence of endangered river pea mussel (Pisidium amnicum) was confirmed at three tributaries but only at lower parts near its inflows to the brook Javorka. The research was focused on the endangered thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus), and the occurrence of numerous population was confirmed at the brook Lukavecký potok. In the brook Chotečský potok a small population of this bivalve was found. Only a few specimens were found at remaining two tributaries.

The paper proposes ways to optimise public transport in order to increase tourist flows to four well-known tourist destinations in the Czech Republic, namely Český Krumlov, Jánské Lázně, Lednice and Macocha, during the spring and autumn seasons. It was found that the quality of public transport infrastructure needed to be improved if tourist flows were to increase. It has been found that tourism development is entirely dependent on the quality of transport infrastructure in order to achieve an increase in tourist flows. A long-term marketing study was carried out in the destinations above with the aim of gathering data on the number of tourists in each of them, the availability of public transport and its timetables, and the needs of tourists in order to improve public transport service. Research has shown that most tourists use secondary transport. This is due to convenience, lack of time, increased comfort, personal requirements and lack of provision of public transport. In addition, there are problems with rail service to some tourist destinations, and the intensity of the bus network varies, which is not convenient for tourists from different population groups. It was found that the capacity of the bus service to the selected destinations is sufficient and can positively influence the growth of tourist flows without increasing logistics costs just by changing the organisation of public transport. Based on the competitive advantage analysis results for the four destinations studied, the weaknesses and strengths of rail and bus transports were identified. Most tourists report that rail transport is more convenient mainly because of its well-connected transport service and affordable prices compared to aeroplanes or cars. It was found that the number of passengers is influenced by the geographic component of the terrain; two destinations (Jánské Lázně and Macocha) are located in the mountains and have a limited infrastructure network due to the undulating terrain, and thus not all means of public transport reach these destinations. It is verified that Český Krumlov is the most optimal of the destinations studied. The study revealed a relationship between the quality of transport infrastructure and the increase in tourist flows to the tourist destinations studied. We propose to develop a model to optimise the transport service in cooperation with a network of tourist information centres. To refine it, further surveys need to be carried out in different directions during the summer and winter seasons.

The Mariánské Lázně Fault (western Bohemia, CZE) is a morphologically, geologically and tectonically prominent structure with that is 150 km long with an NNW-SSE orientation. Its tectonic activity, especially in the NW part and in the neighbouring Cheb basin, is well known and has been proven by present-day earthquake swarms, mantle-derived CO2 emanations, geophysical and paleoseismological research. It seems that other parts of the MLF (especially segments of NNW-SSE and N-S orientation) might also have been active during the Pleistocene, possible even in the Holocene. This study provides a robust set of morphometric analyses – mountain-front sinuosity, basin asymmetry, longitudinal stream profiles, SL-index, which assesses the possibility of recent tectonic activity. The results suggest that the activity of the central and southern part of the MLF could have been very young. A reconstruction of the evolution of the stream network of the Mže River, as a result of different timing of the activity of particular segments of the MLF, is also put forward. The first ideas about the evolution of terrain morphology and the stream network are proposed by this study, however subsequent field research (geophysics, paleoseismology) could prove and date the tectonic activity. The delineation of segments with young activity may also have a great implication for seismic hazard assessment.
