Purpose Model-assisted probability of detection (MAPOD) is an important approach used as part of assessing the reliability of nondestructive testing systems. The purpose of this paper is to apply the polynomial chaos-based Kriging (PCK) metamodeling method to MAPOD for the first time to enable efficient uncertainty propagation, which is currently a major bottleneck when using accurate physics-based models. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the state-of-the-art Kriging, polynomial chaos expansions (PCE) and PCK are applied to “a^ vs a”-based MAPOD of ultrasonic testing (UT) benchmark problems. In particular, Kriging interpolation matches the observations well, while PCE is capable of capturing the global trend accurately. The proposed UP approach for MAPOD using PCK adopts the PCE bases as the trend function of the universal Kriging model, aiming at combining advantages of both metamodels. Findings To reach a pre-set accuracy threshold, the PCK method requires 50 per cent fewer training points than the PCE method, and around one order of magnitude fewer than Kriging for the test cases considered. The relative differences on the key MAPOD metrics compared with those from the physics-based models are controlled within 1 per cent. Originality/value The contributions of this work are the first application of PCK metamodel for MAPOD analysis, the first comparison between PCK with the current state-of-the-art metamodels for MAPOD and new MAPOD results for the UT benchmark cases.

Optical fiber sensors (OFSs) represent an efficient sensing solution in various structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. However, a well-defined methodology is still missing to quantify their damage detection performance, preventing their certification and full deployment in SHM. In a recent study, the authors proposed an experimental methodology to qualify distributed OFSs using the concept of probability of detection (POD). Nevertheless, POD curves require considerable testing, which is often not feasible. This study takes a step forward, presenting a model-assisted POD (MAPOD) approach for the first time applied to distributed OFSs (DOFSs). The new MAPOD framework applied to DOFSs is validated through previous experimental results, considering the mode I delamination monitoring of a double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimen under quasi-static loading conditions. The results show how strain transfer, loading conditions, human factors, interrogator resolution, and noise can alter the damage detection capabilities of DOFSs. This MAPOD approach represents a tool to study the effects of varying environmental and operational conditions on SHM systems based on DOFSs and for the design optimization of the monitoring system.

Model assisted probability of detection (MAPoD) is crucial for quantifying the inspection capability of a nondestructive testing (NDT) system which uses the coil or probe to sense the size and location of the cracks. Unfortunately, it may be computationally intensive for the simulation models. To improve the efficiency of the MAPoD, in this article, an efficient 3D eddy current nondestructive evaluation (ECNDE) forward solver is proposed to make estimations for PoD study. It is the first time that singular value decomposition (SVD) is used as the recompression technique to improve the overall performance of the adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm-based boundary element method (BEM) ECNDE forward solver for implementation of PoD. Both the robustness and efficiency of the proposed solver are demonstrated and testified by comparing the predicted impedance variations of the coil with analytical, semi-analytical and experimental benchmarks. Calculation of PoD curves assisted by the proposed simulation model is performed on a finite thickness plate with a rectangular surface flaw. The features, which are the maximum impedance variations of the coil for various flaw lengths, are obtained entirely by the proposed model with selection of the liftoff distance as the uncertain parameter in a Gaussian distribution. The results show that the proposed ACA-SVD based BEM fast ECNDE forward solver is an excellent simulation model to make estimations for MAPoD study.

Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever a medida da espessura do músculo adutor do polegar (MAP) como preditor de desnutrição em pacientes oncológicos. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo de delineamento transversal com pacientes em tratamento oncológico com diagnóstico de câncer de cabeça e pescoço. Os dados foram coletados através de uma ficha de anamnese nutricional que aborda dados demográficos, clínicos e antropométricos. Para a avaliação antropométrica, utilizou-se os seguintes parâmetros: índice de massa corporal (IMC), circunferência do braço (CB), prega cutânea tricipital (PCT), circunferência muscular do braço (CMB), área muscular do braço corrigida (AMBc), músculo adutor do polegar da mão dominante (MAPD), músculo adutor do polegar da mão não dominante (MAPND) e percentual de perda de peso (%PP). Os resultados indicaram maior prevalência do sexo masculino (82,1%) com média de idade de 64,57±12,52 anos. Quanto à localização do tumor, constatamos maior prevalência de câncer de laringe (28,6%), seguido de câncer de cavidade oral (25%) e câncer de orofaringe (17,9%). Segundo o IMC, a maioria dos pacientes encontravam-se eutróficos (46,4%). A desnutrição esteve mais prevalente através das medidas de CB, PCT, AMBc, MAPD e MAPND. Foi diagnosticado que 78,6% dos pacientes estavam desnutridos segundo a medida do MAP das mãos dominante e não dominante. Os resultados sugerem que a medida do MAP pode ser um método sensível para identificação da desnutrição, contudo, se fazem necessários mais estudos com o objetivo de verificar a eficácia desta medida, proporcionando assim, uma maior compreensão da utilização da mesma para esses pacientes.

Penelitian ini bertujuan: (1) Untuk menghasilkan rancangan dan mengimplementasikan hasil rancangan film dokumenter: ”Pelestarian Lingkungan Melalui Permainan Tradisional Mapoh-pohan”, (2) Untuk mengetahui respon masyarakat terhadap hasil akhir film dokumenter: ”Pelestarian Lingkungan Melalui Permainan Mapoh-pohan”. Metode penelitian yang digunakan pada film dokumenter Mapoh-pohan adalah Research and Develompent dengan model cyclic strategy. Tradisi Mapoh-pohan yang dipilih sebagai subjek penelitian adalah Mapoh-pohan yang ada pada Banjar Ole, Desa Dauh Puri, Kecamatan Marga, Kabupaten Tabanan. Adapun tahap – tahap dari Cyclic Strategy diantaranya adalah brief, tahap 1, tahap 2, evaluasi 1, tahap 3, evaluasi 2, tahap 4 dan Outcome. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film dokumenter: ”Pelestarian Lingkungan Melalui Permainan Tradisional Mapoh-pohan” dalam kriteria sangat baik. Hasil yang diperoleh dari uji ahli isi dan uji ahli media seluruhnya sudah sesuai. Sedangkan dari uji respon penonton disebar ke 30 responden didapatkan hasil rata-rata presentase yaitu 93,66% dengan tingkat pencapaian “sangat baik”. Kesimpulan yang didapatkan film dokumenter: ”Pelestarian Lingkungan Melalui Permainan Tradisional Mapoh-pohan” sudah sangat baik dan bisa digunakan sebagai media pelestari dan promosi permainan tradisional “Mapoh-pohan” dalam bentuk dokumentasi digital. Kata kunci: Film Dokumenter, Mapoh-pohan, Permainan Tradisional, Cyclic Strategy This study aims: (1) To produce a design and implement the result of documentary film: "Environmental Preservation through Mapoh-pohan Traditional Game", (2) To find out the public response to the final result of documentary film: "Environmental Preservation Through Mapoh-pohan Traditional Game". The research method used in the Mapoh-pohan documentary film was Research and Develompent with a cyclic strategy model. Mapoh-pohan tradition chosen as the research subject was Mapoh-pohan in Banjar Ole, Dauh Puri Village, Marga District, Tabanan Regency. The results showed that the documentary film: "Environmental Preservation through Mapoh-pohan Traditional Game" was in very good criteria. The results obtained from the content expert test and the media expert test are all appropriate. Kuta Mapot yang berada di wilayah Desa Tumbang Lapan, Kecamatan Rungan Hulu, Kabupaten Gunungmas, Provinsi Kalimantan Tengah, merupakan hunian berbenteng di tepian anak Sungai Tumbang Lapan, di Daerah Aliran Sungai (DAS) Kahayan bagian hulu. Kuta ini termasuk istimewa karena masih nampak beberapa tiangnya, baik dari bagian pagar keliling maupun bangunan di dalamnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merekonstruksi bentuk, simbol, dan kronologi hunian berbenteng Mapot. Penelitian bersifat deskriptif dengan pendekatan induktif. Pengumpulan data menggunakan metode survei, ekskavasi, wawancara, dan studi pustaka. Hasil penelitian memberi gambaran bahwa Kuta Mapot berbentuk persegi, yang dibentuk oleh pagar keliling dari balok ulin, dilengkapi dengan beberapa patung yang bermakna simbolik sebagai penolak bala sekaligus penjaga, dan bangunan patahu. Secara kronologi (absolut) berdasarkan analisis 14C, Mapot berada di kisaran abad ke-5--20 Masehi, sedangkan secara relatif (keramik Cina) berada pada abad ke-18--20 Masehi. Pendukung Kuta Mapot adalah masyarakat asli, yang sekarang dikenal dengan nama masyarakat Ngaju yang tinggal di Desa Tumbang Lapan, Kecamatan Rungan Hulu. Kuta Mapot, located in the Tumbang Lapan Village, Rungan Hulu Subdistrict, Gunungmas Regency, Central Kalimantan Province, is a fortified residence on the banks of the Tumbang Lapan tributary, in the upper of Kahayan River Basin. Kuta is specially considered because there can still be found some pillars, both from the part of the fences and the buildings inside. This study aims to reconstruct the shape, symbols, and chronology of Mapot fortified dwellings in the village of Tumbang Lapan. Research is descriptive with an inductive approach. The data were collected by survey, excavation, interview, and literature study methods. The study can illustrate that Kuta Mapot is square in shape, formed by a perimeter fence of ironwood beams, equipped with several sculptures that have symbolic meanings as repellent as well as guards, and patahu building. Chronologically (absolute) based on C14 analysis, Mapot is in the range of the 5th-20th century AD, while relatively (Chinese ceramics) is in the 18th-20th century AD. Supporters of Kuta Mapot were indigenous people, now known as Ngaju people who live in Tumbang Lapan Village, Rungan Hulu District.

AbstractIn light of previous results, we assessed whether liposomes functionalized with ApoE-derived peptide (mApoE) and phosphatidic acid (PA) (mApoE-PA-LIP) impacted on intracellular calcium (Ca2+) dynamics in cultured human cerebral microvascular endothelial cells (hCMEC/D3), as an in vitro human blood-brain barrier (BBB) model, and in cultured astrocytes. mApoE-PA-LIP pre-treatment actively increased both the duration and the area under the curve (A.U.C) of the ATP-evoked Ca2+ waves in cultured hCMEC/D3 cells as well as in cultured astrocytes. mApoE-PA-LIP increased the ATP-evoked intracellular Ca2+ waves even under 0 [Ca2+]e conditions, thus indicating that the increased intracellular Ca2+ response to ATP is mainly due to endogenous Ca2+ release. Indeed, when Sarco-Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium ATPase (SERCA) activity was blocked by cyclopiazonic acid (CPA), the extracellular application of ATP failed to trigger any intracellular Ca2+ waves, indicating that metabotropic purinergic receptors (P2Y) are mainly involved in the mApoE-PA-LIP-induced increase of the Ca2+ wave triggered by ATP. In conclusion, mApoE-PA-LIP modulate intracellular Ca2+ dynamics evoked by ATP when SERCA is active through inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate-dependent (InsP3) endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ release. Considering that P2Y receptors represent important pharmacological targets to treat cognitive dysfunctions, and that P2Y receptors have neuroprotective effects in neuroinflammatory processes, the enhancement of purinergic signaling provided by mApoE-PA-LIP could counteract Aβ-induced vasoconstriction and reduction in cerebral blood flow (CBF). Our obtained results could give an additional support to promote mApoE-PA-LIP as effective therapeutic tool for Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Two low molecular weight MAP2 variants have been described, MAP2c and MAP2d. These variants are produced from a single gene by alternative splicing, and in their C-terminal regions contain, respectively, 3 and 4 tandem repeats, some of which are known to be involved in binding to microtubules. Substantial differences in the developmental expression pattern of MAP2c and MAP2d suggest they have different functions in neural cells. In order to investigate the respective roles of these MAP2 variants, we have analyzed the effects of MAP2c and MAP2d expression on microtubule and microfilament organization in transiently transfected cells. Our results show that both variants stabilize microtubules, but only MAP2d stabilizes microfilaments.

The primary purpose of the study was to compare maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) in resistance-trained (RT), endurance-trained (ET), and untrained men (UT). A secondary purpose was to determine the influence of leg muscle mass (MM) on MAOD by examining the relationship between MM and MAOD and by comparing MAOD expressed relative to MM between the groups. MAOD was determined during 2-4 min of constant-load fatiguing cycling. MM, estimated via anthropometric measurements, was higher (p <.05) for RT (mean ± SE; 25.5 ± 3.4 kg) compared to ET (20.3 ± 3.5) and UT (21.6 ± 3.4). MAOD in liters O2 eq was larger in RT (4.75 ± 0.3) compared to UT (3.07 ± 0.3) and ET (3.75 ± 0.3). A significant positive correlation was observed between MAOD (LO2 eq) and MM (kg) for RT only (RT, r =.85; ET, r =.55; UT, r =.20). Based on the correlational and mean MM data, the higher MAOD (LO2 eq) in RT relative to ET and UT is predominantly the result of their larger leg muscle mass. Abstract Recent evidence from our laboratory provided proof-of-concept for therapeutic potential for glioblastoma (GBM) of a combination strategy based on radiation and adjuvant doxorubicin-loaded liposomes (LIPs) conjugated with a modified Apolipoprotein E-derived peptide (mApoE), known to facilitate Blood Brain Barrier (BBB)-crossing. Significant glioma stem cell (GSC) apoptosis, tumor growth inhibition and increased overall survival were observed in vivo upon combined treatment offering attractive and innovative therapeutic possibilities for GBM. To strengthen therapeutic efficacy and lower off-target effects, we implemented mApoE-LIPs with a matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-activable element that allows controlled payload release only in the MMPs rich tumor microenvironment, thus concurring to reduce unspecific interaction in healthy tissue where MMPs are low or absent Given the MMP2 overexpression in GBM, a MMP2-activable block (M2AB) was included in the phospholipid bilayer of mApoE-LIPs. The M2AB efficacy was evaluated on patient-derived GSCs displaying different MMP2 enzymatic activities by means of calcein-loaded M2AB/mApoE-LIPs. Human endothelial cells (hCMEC/d3), not expressing MMP2, were included to validate the targeted strategy as well as to assay the cytotoxicity on non-tumoral cells. Intracellular calcein quantification showed that: 1) calcein uptake correlates with MMP2 activity level; 2) M2AB/mApoE functionalization augmented calcein internalization into GSCs compared to mApoE alone. The MEK/ERK pathway, known to supports GBM cell survival, migration, and radio-resistance was considered as target strategy against GBM. A survey of the MEK/ERK inhibitors Trametinib (TRAM) and Pimasertib (PIMA) in several GSC lines indicated significant induction of GSC apoptosis associated to reduction of ERK phosphorylation. TRAM and PIMA were then encapsulated into mApoE-LIPs and their anti-GSC activity was investigated. Indeed, a dose dependent inhibition of GSC survival and induction of apoptosis combined to a significant lower level of phospho-ERK was observed upon 72h treatment. In conclusion, M2AB/mApoE-LIPs demonstrate: 1) a MMP2-dependent payload release; 2) stability when MMP2 lacks in the cellular milieu; 3) a synergic effect of the double M2AB/mApoE functionalization. Objective To validate the effectiveness of MAPO method (Movement and Assistance of Hospital Patient) after the introduction of some changes to improve assessment objectivity. Background The number of operators exposed to patient manual handling is increasing considerably. MAPO, proposed in 1999 as a useful tool to estimate the risk of patient manual handling, is a method characterized by analytical quickness. It has recently been improved to better match the 2012 ISO (International Organization for Standardization) technical report. Methods A multicenter study was conducted between 2014 and 2016 involving 26 Italian hospitals in the Apulia Region. MAPO method was used to assess the risk of patient manual handling in 116 wards. A total of 1,998 exposed subjects were evaluated for the presence or absence of acute low back pain in the previous 12 months. Results Only 12% of the investigated wards fell in the green exposure level (MAPO index = 0.1–1.5), 37% resulted in the average exposure level (MAPO index = 1.51–5) and the remaining 51% in the higher exposure level (MAPO index >5). The results confirmed a positive association between increasing levels of MAPO index and the number of episodes of acute low back pain (adjusted p trend = .001). Conclusion The improvements made over the past years led to a more objective assessment procedure. Despite the changes, the study confirmed the effectiveness of MAPO method to predict low back pain. Application MAPO method is an accurate risk assessment tool that identifies and evaluates workplace risks. The proper application of the method significantly improves working conditions.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of acute caffeine ingestion on the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) and short-term running performance. Nine well-trained males performed a preliminary assessment and. at least 4 days later, a supramaximal run to exhaustion. Their VO2max values were determined, and the MAOD test at an exercise intensity equivalent to 125% VO2max was performed. Caffeine (5 mg ⋅ kg−1) or placebo was administered 1 hr prior to the MAOD in a double-blind, randomized cross-over study. In comparison to the placebo condition, subjects in the caffeine condition developed a significantly greater MAOD and increased their run lime to exhaustion. However, posl-MAOD blood lactate concentration ([HLa]) was not different between trials for caffeine and placebo. Caffeine ingestion can be an effective ergogenic aid for short-term, supramaximal running performance and can increase MAOD. However, these results do not appear to be related to an increased [HLa).

Abstract In the presented work, the parameters of a new MAPD-3NM-II photodiode with buried pixel structure manufactured in cooperation with Zecotek Company are investigated. The photon detection efficiency, gain, capacitance and gamma-ray detection performance of photodiodes are studied. The SPECTRIG MAPD is used to measure the parameters of the MAPD-3NM-II and scintillation detector based on it. The obtained results show that the newly developed MAPD-3NM-II photodiode outperforms its counterparts in most parameters and it can be successfully applied in space application, medicine, high-energy physics and security.

Modulated adiabatic passage on oriented nuclei (MAPON) is a technique developed specifically to measure very small electric quadrupole interactions (EQIs) at radioactive probe nuclei even when such interactions are masked in the frequency domain by inhomogeneous magnetic broadening associated with a dominant magnetic hyperfine interaction. In this paper an overview of the technique is presented with particular reference to 60CoCo EQI measurements which were an important step in establishing MAPON methodology. MAPON results for dilute nd impurities in ferromagnetic Fe and Ni metal hosts are reviewed including presentation of new data for 58CoNi and 60CoNi. Priorities for future studies are provided on the basis of this review.

Transformasi gen MaSOD ke dalam genom rumput laut diharapkan dapat mengurangi cekaman oksidatif terutama yang disebabkan oleh perubahan suhu, salinitas, dan cemaran logam di perairan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk regenerasi rumput laut hasil introduksi gen MaSOD dan non-transgenik pada labu kultur. Regenerasi dan perbanyakan rumput laut hasil transformasi gen MaSOD dilakukan di laboratorium pada labu kultur yang diletakkan dalam “culture chamber” yang dilengkapi dengan aerasi menggunakan media kultur yang diperkaya dengan pupuk PES, Grund, Conwy, dan SSW sebagai kontrol, salinitas 20, 25, 30, 35, dan 40 g/L, pH 4, 5, 6, 7, dan 8. Intensitas cahaya antara 500-2.000 lux dengan fotoperiode terang dan gelap 8:16; 12:12; dan 16:8. Untuk merangsang pertumbuhan eksplan dilakukan pemeliharaan dengan penambahan hormon tumbuh IAA dan BAP dengan perbandingan 1:1, 1:2, dan 2:1. Penelitian dilakukan secara bertahap. Evaluasi transgenik dilakukan menggunakan teknik PCR. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa sintasan yang paling tinggi diperoleh menggunakan media PES (94%), salinitas 30 g/L (90%), pH 7 (96%), intensitas cahaya pada 1.500 lux (80%), fotoperiode 12:12 (84%), komposisi ZPT dengan campuran IAA dan BAP dengan perbandingan 2:1. Hasil analisis PCR memperlihatkan K. alvarezii transgenik putatif mengandung transgen MaSOD sebanyak 78% dari hasil transformasi.Superoxide dismutase transformation (MaSOD) gene of seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii mediated by Agrobacterium tumefacient has been successfully done in vitro. MaSOD genes introduced into the seaweed genome is expected to reduce oxidative stress caused by environmental conditions such as changes in temperature, salinity and metal contamination of the water. This study aimed to regenerate both the MaSOD transformed seaweed and non-transgenic in a culture flask. Regeneration and multiplication of those seaweed were conducted in a laboratory flask cultures placed in a “culture chamber” which was aerated and enriched with fertilizers PES, Grund, Conwy, and SSW as a control, salinity 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 g/L, pH: 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. the light intensity between 500-2000 lux, with light and dark photoperiod 8:16; 12:12; and 16:8. To stimulate the growth of explants the addition of growth hormone IAA and BAP with ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 were performed. This study was a multiple-step of process, by which transgenic explants was identified by PCR method. The results showed that the highest survival rate was obtained using media PES (94%), salinity 30 g / L (90%), pH= 7 (96%), the intensity of light at 1500 lux (80%), photoperiod= 12: 12 (84%), and ratio of IAA and BAP 2: 1. The results of PCR analysis showed the putative K. alvarezii transgenic MaSOD was 78% of explants.

Gender differences in maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) were examined before and after 4 and 8 wk of high-intensity interval training. Untrained men ( n = 7) and women ( n = 7) cycled at 120% of pretraining peak oxygen uptake (V˙o 2 peak) to exhaustion (MAOD test) pre-, mid-, and posttraining. A posttraining timed test was also completed at the MAOD test power output, but this test was stopped at the time to exhaustion achieved during the pretraining MAOD test. The 14.3 ± 5.2% increase in MAOD observed in men after 4 wk of training was not different from the 14.0 ± 3.0% increase seen in women ( P > 0.05). MAOD increased by a further 6.6 ± 1.9% in men, and this change was not different from the additional 5.1 ± 2.3% increase observed in women after the final 4 wk of training. V˙o 2 peak measured during incremental cycling increased significantly ( P < 0.01) in male but not in female subjects after 8 wk of training. Moreover, the accumulated oxygen (AO2) uptake was higher in men during the posttraining timed test compared with the pretraining MAOD test ( P < 0.01). In contrast, the AO2uptake was unchanged from pre- to posttraining in female subjects. The increase in MAOD with training was not different between men and women, suggesting an enhanced ability to produce ATP anaerobically in both groups. However, the increase inV˙o 2 peak and AO2 uptake obtained in male subjects after training indicates improved oxidative metabolism in men but not in women. We conclude that there are basic gender differences that may predispose men and women to specific metabolic adaptations after a period of intense interval training.

Abstract The paper is concerned with the parameter study of a new generation of micro-pixel avalanche photodiodes (MAPD) with deeply buried pixel structure, also named silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) or multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC). The new MAPD of type MAPD-3NM was manufactured in the frame of collaboration with Zecotek Company. Measurements were carried out and discussed in terms of the important parameters such as the current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristic, gain, the temperature coefficient of breakdown voltage, breakdown voltage, and gamma-ray detection performance using an LFS scintillator. The obtained results showed that the newly developed MAPD-3NM photodiode outperformed the previous generation in most parameters and can be successfully applied in space application, medicine, high-energy physics, and security. New proposals are also discussed, for further improvement of the parameters of the MAPD photodiodes that will be produced in the coming years.

Both an increase in atmospheric temperature and a decrease in atmospheric pressure can lead to the degradation of the maximum allowable power output (MAPO) or the thermal efficiency of a gas turbine. In order to reduce these adverse effects, this paper provides a simulated study on the improvement of the MAPO and the variations of the thermal efficiency due to the fuel flow and variable area nozzle control under different atmospheric conditions. Simulation results indicate that the MAPO increases with the power turbine nozzle area, while the thermal efficiency shows a parabola trend. With the same increment of the power turbine nozzle area, the improvement of the MAPO goes up as the atmospheric temperature rises and the decrease of thermal efficiency is alleviated. Analyses show that the slow degradation of the compressor isentropic efficiency is a key factor that enables the MAPO to increase significantly and the thermal efficiency to remain almost constant.

The purpose of this study was to compare values of maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD; a measure of anaerobic capacity) in running and cycling. Twenty-seven women and 25 men performed exhaustive treadmill and cycle ergometer tests of ∼3 min, ∼5 min, and ∼7 min duration. Oxygen demands were estimated assuming a linear relationship between demand and intensity and also using upwardly curvilinear relationships. When oxygen demand was estimated using speed (with exponent 1.05), values for MAOD for the three running tests were virtually identical; the mean of the three values was 78 ± 7 mL·kg–1. Use of an oxygen demand that was estimated using work rate (with exponent 1.00) generated the most similar values for MAOD from the three cycling tests (mean of 59 ± 6 mL·kg–1). Consistent with the higher (p < 0.05) MAOD in running, peak post-exercise blood lactate concentrations were also higher (p < 0.05) in running (13.9 ± 2.2 mmol·L–1) than in cycling (12.6 ± 2.4 mmol·L–1). The results suggest that the relationship between oxygen demand and running speed is upwardly curvilinear for the speeds used to measure MAOD; the relationship between demand and cycle ergometer work rate is linear; MAOD is greater in running than in cycling.

We investigated whether addition of a balanced electrolyte supplement and oxygen to the nonionic contrast medium iohexol reduces the risk of ventricular fibrillation (VF), and studied regional electrophysiology prior to the VF event. Twenty ml of each test solution were infused at a rate of 0.5 ml/s into the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in 8 anesthetized dogs. LAD was externally occluded during infusion, to simulate a wedged catheter situation. ECG, hemodynamics, regional epicardial monophasic action potential duration (MAPD) and ventricular activation times (VAT) were calculated. All infusions with iohexol caused VF within 27 s. Five of 12 infusions with iohexol + 30 mmol NaCl, 3 of 11 infusions with iohexol + electrolytes (IPE) (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2) and 4 of 11 infusions with IPE with oxygen addition (IPE + O2) caused VF after 45 s. Iohexol did not change MAPD prior to the VF event. Iohexol + 30 mmol NaCl and the IPE solutions lengthened MAPD initially, but at the time of the VF event MAPD were normalized or shortened. We conclude that electrolyte supplement to iohexol may prevent VF, probably by lengthening MAPD.

The Multi-Agent Pickup and Delivery (MAPD) problem models applications where a large number of agents attend to a stream of incoming pickup-and-delivery tasks. Token Passing (TP) is a recent MAPD algorithm that is efficient and effective. We make TP even more efficient and effective by using a novel combinatorial search algorithm, called Safe Interval Path Planning with Reservation Table (SIPPwRT), for single-agent path planning. SIPPwRT uses an advanced data structure that allows for fast updates and lookups of the current paths of all agents in an online setting. The resulting MAPD algorithm TP-SIPPwRT takes kinematic constraints of real robots into account directly during planning, computes continuous agent movements with given velocities that work on non-holonomic robots rather than discrete agent movements with uniform velocity, and is complete for wellformed MAPD instances. We demonstrate its benefits for automated warehouses using both an agent simulator and a standard robot simulator. For example, we demonstrate that it can compute paths for hundreds of agents and thousands of tasks in seconds and is more efficient and effective than existing MAPD algorithms that use a post-processing step to adapt their paths to continuous agent movements with given velocities.

The resulting MAPD algorithm TP-SIPPwRT takes kinematic constraints of real robots into account directly during planning, computes continuous agent movements with given velocities that work on non-holonomic robots rather than discrete agent movements with uniform velocity, and is complete for well-formed MAPD instances. We demonstrate its benefits for automated warehouses using both an agent simulator and a standard robot simulator. For example, we demonstrate that it can compute paths for hundreds of agents and thousands of tasks in seconds and is more efficient and effective than existing MAPD algorithms that use a post-processing step to adapt their paths to continuous agent movements with given velocities. The deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques in the brain is a significant pathological signature of Alzheimer’s disease, correlating with synaptic dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Several compounds, peptides, or drugs have been designed to redirect or stop Aβ aggregation. Among them, the trideca-peptide CWG-LRKLRKRLLR (mApoE), which is derived from the receptor binding sequence of apolipoprotein E, is effectively able to inhibit Aβ aggregation and to promote fibril disaggregation. Taking advantage of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging and fluorescence techniques, we investigate if the clustering of mApoE on gold nanoparticles (AuNP) surface may affect its performance in controlling Aβ aggregation/disaggregation processes. The results showed that the ability of free mApoE to destroy preformed Aβ fibrils or to hinder the Aβ aggregation process is preserved after its clustering on AuNP. This allows the possibility to design multifunctional drug delivery systems with clustering of anti-amyloidogenic molecules on any NP surface without affecting their performance in controlling Aβ aggregation processes.

Abstract Staphylococci are important mastitic-pathogens of humans and livestock. Chlorate is reported to be a potent inhibitor against staphylococci but adaptation by the microbes can occur. Presently, we cultured multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain ATCC 12600 anaerobically at 39oC in nitrate-supplemented (5 mM) Tryptic Soy broth. The broth was treated without (control) or alone with 5 mM sodium chlorate (ClO3) or 9 mM of either 2-nitro-1-propanol (NPOH), ethyl nitroacetate (ENA) or ethyl 2-nitropropionate (E2NPA) or with combinations of CLO3 and respective nitrocompound. Control and treated cultures were incubated in triplicate and growth was measured via absorbance (600 nm) at during 9 h. An analysis of variance revealed an inhibitory effect of treatments (P &lt; 0.05; SEM = 0.078) on mean specific growth rates of S. aureus, with rates during logarithmic growth being most rapid in controls and cultures treated with ENA or EN2PA (1.45, 1.23 and 1.21 h-1, respectively) and more than 92% slower in NPOH and NPOH+CLO3-treated cultures (0.09 and 0.03 h-1, respectively). Growth rates of cultures treated solely with CLO3 (0.66 h-1) were more than 50% slower than controls and were decreased further in cultures treated with combinations of CLO3 plus E2NPA or ENA (0.39 and 0.45 h-1). After 9 h of growth, maximum optical densities (maxOD) were highest for controls and cultures treated with ENA or EN2PA (0.52, 0.52 and 0.50 maxOD, respectively), intermediate in cultures treated with CLO3 alone (0.21 maxOD) and lower yet in cultures treated with CLO3 plus ENA, E2NPA or NPOH (0.15, 0.11 and 0.02 maxOD, respectively). The maxOD for cultures treated with NPOH alone was 0.02 and did not differ from cultures treated with the combination of CLO3+NPOH. Results demonstrate marked synergistic and prolonging effects of combing ENA and E2NPA with CLO3 but no additional effect of the potent anti-staphylococcal activity of NPOH.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that ingestion of creatine monohydrate increases anaerobic exercise capacity, as reflected by the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD). Subjects were assigned, double-blind, to placebo (PL, n = 12) or creatine (CR, n = 14) groups and ingested 5-g doses 4 times daily of artificial sweetener or artificially sweetened creatine monohydrate, respectively, for 5 days. On a separate day subjects exercised to exhaustion at 125%[Formula: see text]. After two familiarization trials, MAOD was again determined before treatment, after 5 days of PL or CR treatment, and 7 days later. MAOD increased after CR treatment from 4.04 ± 0.31 to 4.41 ± 034 L(p < .001) and remained elevated for another 7 days (4.31 ± 0.33, p < .001). Time to exhaustion also increased in CR from 130 ± 7 to 141 ± 7 s(p < .01) and remained increased for another 7 days (139 ± 8 s, p < .01). These data demonstrate that ingesting creatine monohydrate for 5 days increases the MAOD, and is likely to have an ergogenic effect on supramaximal exercise performance that persists for at least a week after treatment. This study presents an accuracy assessment of various classical time series forecasting methods to determine the most accurate forecasting method for predicting demand of the 50cl product of a bottled water supply chain. The classical time series forecasting methods compared are the moving average, weighted moving average, exponential smoothing, adjusted exponential smoothing, linear trend line, Holt’s model, and Winter’s model. The Mean Absolute Percent Deviation (MAPD) value was determined for the various forecasting methods to find the forecasting method with the least MAPD and hence the highest forecasting accuracy. The tracking signal measure was also used to determine the forecasting models which were biased. The results showed that though the weighted moving average method began to underforecast demand in the final period, it had the lowest MAPD value of 2.25%, making it the forecasting method with the highest accuracy for predicting the 50cl bottled water demand. On the other hand, though the exponential smoothing forecasting method had the highest MAPD value of 3.43% and least accuracy for predicting the bottled water demand, its forecasts were consistently within the tracking signal control limits. This study will aid supply chain analysts in implementing accuracy assessment of classical time series forecasting models.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a influência de diferentes tempos de análise dos testes submáximos para determinação do máximo déficit acumulado de oxigênio (MAOD), adotando diferentes janelas de tempo 4-6min, 6-8min e 8-10min. Participaram do estudo 10 ciclistas com idade média de 27,5 ± 4,1 anos, massa corporal 74,4 ± 12,7kg e tempo médio de prática de 9,8 ± 4,7 anos. Os atletas realizaram um teste de esforço progressivo para determinação do consumo de oxigênio de pico (VO2pico) e quatro testes retangulares submáximos (60, 70, 80 e 90% VO2pico) com 10min de duração para estimar os valores da demanda de O2 (DEO2). Os valores médios de VO2 obtidos nas cargas para o tempo 4-6min, 6-8min e 8 a 10min foram aplicados em uma regressão linear entre a intensidade e o consumo de O2 para cada janela de tempo. Os sujeitos realizaram ainda um teste retangular supramáximo (110% VO2pico) para a quantificação do MAOD. Não foi constatada nenhuma diferença significativa no VO2 entre os diferentes períodos de tempo dos testes submáximos (P > 0,05). Da mesma forma, nenhuma diferença significativa foi constatada no DEAO2 e MAOD nos diferentes períodos de análise (P > 0,05). Verificou-se ainda que os valores de MAOD obtidos nos três intervalos de tempo apresentaram boa concordância e forte correlação. Dessa forma, os dados sugerem que os testes submáximos utilizados para gerar os valores do MAOD podem ser reduzidos ao menos nesse tipo de amostra e com a utilização de ciclossimulador.

Mechanisms associated with right ventricular (RV) hypertension and arrhythmias are less understood than those in the left ventricle (LV). The aim of our study was to investigate whether and by what mechanisms a proarrhythmic substrate exists in a rat model of RV hypertension and hypertrophy. Rats were injected with monocrotaline (MCT; 60 mg/kg) to induce pulmonary artery hypertension or with saline (CON). Myocardial levels of mRNA for genes expressing ion channels were measured by real-time RT-PCR. Monophasic action potential duration (MAPD) was recorded in isolated Langendorff-perfused hearts. MAPD restitution was measured, and arrhythmias were induced by burst stimulation. Twenty-two to twenty-six days after treatment, MCT animals had RV hypertension, hypertrophy, and decreased ejection fractions compared with CON. A greater proportion of MCT hearts developed sustained ventricular tachycardias/fibrillation (0.83 MCT vs. 0.14 CON). MAPD was prolonged in RV and less so in the LV of MCT hearts. There were decreased levels of mRNA for K+ channels. Restitution curves of MCT RV were steeper than CON RV or either LV. Dispersion of MAPD was greater in MCT hearts and was dependent on stimulation frequency. Computer simulations based on ion channel gene expression closely predicted experimental changes in MAPD and restitution. We have identified a proarrhythmic substrate in the hearts of MCT-treated rats. We conclude that steeper RV electrical restitution and rate-dependant RV-LV action potential duration dispersion may be contributing mechanisms and be implicated in the generation of arrhythmias associated with in RV hypertension and hypertrophy.

Background: Evidence on the prevalence of lower back pain (LBP) among nurses is widespread in the literature, with several risk factors being reported. These include manual handling of patients, repetitive bending and twisting movements, and long working hours. It is reported that LBP has negative health outcomes and causes poor work performance among healthcare workers (HCWs). The magnitude of ergonomic risks associated with these healthcare activities has not been adequately investigated in Botswana. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the ergonomic risk levels associated with the manual handling of patients and its association with the prevalence of LBP among nurses in Botswana. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional hospital-based study conducted in a Botswana public tertiary hospital from March to April 2023. The Movement and Assistance of Hospital Patients (MAPO) tool was used to collect data on ergonomic risk levels. Data on the demographic characteristics of participants were collected using a tool adapted from the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated to determine the association between ergonomic risk levels and the prevalence of LBP. Results: A total of 256 nurses participated and completed the study. The self-reported prevalence of LBP in this study was 76.6%. The risk of acquiring LBP was high (90.5%) based on the MAPO index. Although the frequencies of self-reported LBP were high among nurses, these did not show any significant association with the MAPO index data. This could be partly due to the small sample size. Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of LBP in this study, which was corroborated by the MAPO index data. This has demonstrated the value of the MAPO index in forecasting the risk of patient manual handling. The findings might help Botswana formulate policies intended to address ergonomic preventive measures, directed towards reducing the MAPO index score by addressing the single risk determinants.

The traditional Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is a feedback control loop that is commonly used in industrial control systems with fixed parameters, whereas the adaptive PID (APID) controller is based on the analysis of traditional PID controllers. It utilizes an online parameter adjustment method built on the state of the system resulting in better system adaptability. In this paper, the APID controller that is suggested by (Ebel, 2011) is used firstly to control a 2-degree of freedom (DOF) lower limb rehabilitation robot. The structure of this controller is then modified to perform a Modified Adaptive PID (MAPID) control in order to improve the efficiency of APID controller and hence improve the performance of the rehabilitation robot. The parameters of APID and the suggested MAPID controllers are optimized by using Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm. Linear and non-linear desired trajectories are used to test the performance of the controlled rehabilitation robot. Simulation results show that the obtained performance of the rehabilitation robot is more efficient with the MAPID than with the APID having no overshoot and very small steady state error. The controller has settling time of (0.463) and (0.851) seconds, and rise time of (0.485) and (0.752) seconds respectively for link1 and link2.

Community detection in complex networks plays an important role in mining and analyzing the structure and function of networks. However, traditional algorithms for community detection-based graph partition and hierarchical clustering usually have to face expensive computational costs or require some specific conditions when dealing with complex networks. Recently, community detection based on intelligent optimization attracts more and more attention because of its good effectiveness. In this paper, a new multi-objective ant colony optimization with decomposition (MACOD) for community detection in complex networks is proposed. Firstly, a new framework of multi-objective ant colony algorithm specialized initially for the complex network clustering is developed, in which two-objective optimization problem can be decomposed into a series of subproblems and each ant is responsible for one single objective subproblem and it targets a particular point in the Pareto front. Secondly, a problem-specific individual encoding strategy based on graph is proposed. Moreover, a new efficient local search mechanism is designed in order to improve the stability of the algorithm. The proposed MACOD has been compared with four other state of the art algorithms on two benchmark networks and seven real-world networks including three large-scale networks. Experimental results show that MACOD performs competitively for the community detection problems.

Peramalan (forecasting) menjadi bagian dari manajemen operasional yang sangat penting karena mempengaruhi efisiensi dan efektivitas operasional perusahaan serta berdampak pada kepuasan pelanggan dan pemenuhan permintaan pelanggan dengan tepat. Saat ini perusahaan menggunakan intuitif dari manajemen dan model naïve forecast karena merupakan model sederhana dan mudah diterapkan oleh perusahaan, tetapi sering terjadi ketidakakuratan dalam peramalan yang berdampak pada persediaan material, biaya penyimpanan dan pemenuhan permintaan pelanggan. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memberikan rekomendasi kepada perusahaan model peramalan yang terbaik dari 2 months moving average, 3 months moving average, dan exponential smoothing (dengan α= 0.2 dan 0.3) berdasarkan analisa nilai kesalahan peramalan (MAD, MAPD, dan MAPE) terkecil. Pengumpulan data dengan menggunakan observasi, wawancara, pengambilan data historis untuk data permintaan produk minuman kopi susu, menganalisa dengan model peramalan moving average (2 bulan dan 3 bulan) dan exponential smoothing (dengan α= 0.2 dan 0.3), menguji keempat model peramalan yang dipakai dengan MAD, MAPD, dan MAPE dan menentukan model peramalan terbaik dari nilai MAD, MAPD, MAPE terkecil. Hasil dari penelitian memberikan rekomendasi menggunakan model peramalan terbaik yaitu model exponential smoothing (α= 0.3) dengan hasil peramalan untuk periode Agustus 2023 yaitu 2319 unit produk minuman susu di mana memberikan nilai kesalahan terkecil untuk MAD yaitu 153.8, MAPD yaitu 6.2%, MAPE yaitu 6.66%.

Background:Previous studies have shown that Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a reliable biomarker of skin fibrosis and significantly correlates with the severity of the skin involvement in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc)1,2.Objectives:Aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the performance of skin OCT to discriminate between SSc and healthy controls (HC) and to compare results with the current gold standard, the modified Rodnan skin score (mRss), in a different SSc study cohort.Methods:Dorsal forearm skin of consecutive diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc) patients and matched-HC was scanned by an investigator blinded to the clinical data using Vivosight scanner (Michelson Diagnostics, Kent, UK). Minimum Optical Density (MinOD), Maximum OD (MaxOD) and OD at 300 micron-depth (OD300) were measured. Clinical involvement was assessed by a blinded operator using the mRss and results were compared with imaging data. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism software V.7.0.Results:A total of 88 OCT images were obtained from 22 dcSSc patients [20 Female, mean age 49 (±11) years, 12 with < 5 years disease duration) and 22 HC (20 Female, mean age 50.7 (±6.7) years]. All OCT measures (MinOD, MaxOD and OD300) were significantly lower in SSc patients than in HC (p=0.011, p<0.0001, p<0.0001 respectively). MaxOD and OD300 were significantly different between the four groups (0-3) of patients based on the mRss at the site of analysis (p=0.035, p=0.001 respectively). Skin OCT showed a good performance in discriminating SSc skin vs HC (overall AUC 0.72, 0.8 and 0.89 for MinOD, MaxOD and OD300 respectively).Conclusion:These results confirm in a cohort different from those of the previous studies that skin OCT is able to reflect the severity of skin involvement in SSc.
