Managing employee engagement is critical to the success of an organization, but 85% of managers struggle with engaging employees. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore effective communication strategies within an organization and determine how managers used these strategies to increase employee engagement, productivity, and organizational effectiveness. Data were collected from organizational documents, observations, and semistructured interviews with 6 managers of a corporation located in the midwestern United States. All participants were working full-time for at least 3 years, had a managerial title, and were responsible for departmental communication. Moustakas's modified van Kaam method was used for data analysis. Communication theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. Three themes that emerged from the participants' interviews, observations, and data analysis were coaching employees, motivation, and consistency in communication. The findings of this study may impact positive social change by improving the organizational competitive environment through engagement in the community and society. The implications for positive social change include the potential for managers with direct reports to improve their understanding of the causes of engagement and disengagement, internal communication strategies that cause disengagement, and the benefits of implementing engagement strategies. The results of this study may provide managers with knowledge about employee engagement strategies used to improve productivity and organizational effectiveness within the industry. Community relationships could also improve as a result of effective communication.

Scientific applications with High Performance Computing (HPC) requirements are migrating to cloud environments due to the facilities that it offers. Cloud computing plays a major role considering the compute power that it provides, avoiding the cost of physical cluster maintenance. With features like elasticity and pay-per-use, it helps to reduce the researchers procurement risk. Most of HPC applications are implemented using Message Passing Interface (MPI), which is a key component in common and distributed computing tasks. However, for this kind of applications on cloud environments, the major drawback is the lost of execution performance, due to the virtualized network that affects the communications latency and bandwidth. To use a cloud environment with scientific applications of this kind, low latency communication mechanisms are required. The network topology detail is not available for users in virtualized environments, making difficult to use the existing optimizations based on network topology information done in bare-metal cluster environments. In some cases, cloud providers can migrate virtual machines, which impacts the efficiency of routing optimizations and placement algorithms. Moreover, if resource isolation is not guaranteed, resource sharing can lead to variable bandwidth and unstable performance. In this thesis a Dynamic MPI Communication Balance and Management (DMCBM) is presented, to overcome the communication challenge of HPC applications in cloud. DMCBM is implemented as a middle-ware between the users application and the execution environment. It improves message communication latency times in cloudbased systems, and helps users to detect mapping and parallel implementation issues. Our solution dynamically rebalances communication flows at higher levels of the virtualized HPC stack, e.g. over MPI communications layer, to dynamically remove communication hot-spots and congestion in the underlying layers. DMCBM abstracts the communications state between application processes based on latency measurements. This middleware characterizes the underlying network topology and analyzes parallel applications behavior in the cloud. This allows for detecting network congestion and optimizing communications by either selecting alternative communication paths between processes, or leveraging live migration of virtual machines in cloud environments. These options are analyzed in real-time and selected according to the type of congestion (link or destination). DMCBM achieves lower application execution time in case of congestion, obtaining better performance in clouds. Finally, experiments that verify the functionality and improvements of DMCBM with MPI Applications in public and private clouds are presented. The experiments where done by measuring execution and communication times. NAS Parallel Benchmarks and a real application of dynamic particles simulation NBody are used, obtaining an improvement of up to 10% in the execution time and a communication time reduction of about 40% in congestion scenarios.

This mini dissertation reports on the findings from a study on Chief Executive Officers of dually listed companies which, measures the value they place on Corporate Communication professionals. Using the Hill and Knowlton quantitative framework, the study explicates the role Corporate Communication professionals play within the organisational context and identifies their strategic legitimacy. Much of the literature on the topic of strategic Corporate Communication asserts that this function is drastically marginalised and its value disputed within the inner circle of organisations. The literature states that Corporate Communication managers and strategists are expected to validate their presence within the top levels of management in organisations. CEOs of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and at least one other international stock exchange were surveyed. Findings include evidence of inconsistency and confusion on the part of CEOs, with regard to the understanding of Corporate Communication as a discipline and business function, as well as its location within the organisational structure. Further study is recommended to investigate the determinants of value within Corporate Communication for CEOs, to bridge the current strategic and knowledge gap.

Abstract Communication networks are experiencing a significant growth of data traffic posing new challenges to the overall systems that should become more reactive and adaptive towards dynamically changing traffic, connections and network conditions. This thesis examines adaptive traffic management solutions within heterogeneous communication networks, which can be utilized to improve network performance, provide Quality of Service (QoS) for traffic paths and share resources in a fair way. The developed adaptive methods include solutions for fuzzy flow scheduling (AWFQ, FWQ) and regressive admission control (REAC) to provide stable network performance and efficient resource control. Such techniques for adaptive traffic management continuously balance and control traffic usage and recover from network faults and attacks. The results utilize traffic monitoring for estimating the overall network conditions, applying cognition to learn from previous actions, and adapting to the current traffic conditions for resource optimization. The thesis researches how to distribute these computing mechanisms towards network edges closer to the actual application users for more efficient resource usage, and to provide better performance for delay-sensitive applications. The methods developed have been applied to vehicular communications to assess and improve the messaging between vehicles and vulnerable road users (VRUs). These mechanisms are able to react faster to data traffic changes and guarantee better quality for prioritized traffic and users while at the same time they preserve fairness to other flows compared to traditional control and scheduling methods without adaptive characteristics. The overall system reacts to changes in the network QoS by determining decision-making procedures on possible flow rejection, marking, or allowed bandwidth weight assignment, thus bringing cognition to the network path

This thesis studies some jitter management algorithms for real-time applications. These algorithms are executed at a destination node, and assume no knowledge of the source characteristic or the impact of the network path characteristic. The work mainly focuses on prediction algorithms that make use of the information of the packets received in the past, and adjust buffer parameters in order to maintain certain level of quality of service (QoS). Two algorithms are proposed, first, to apply the least mean square method to predict the future packet interarrival time so that the buffer parameters can be dynamically changed in order to adapt to the bursty network traffic; second, to apply the fuzzy logic method on the buffer management to maintain the gap probability within acceptable level while keep the latency as low as possible. These two new algorithms have been evaluated using OPNET simulation and compared with some other algorithms such as the I-policy and the E-policy. We studied and discussed the tradeoff among the gap probability, average display latency, and packet loss probability. Towards the end, we have also made some design recommendations.

In the past few years there hás been considerable debate over the question of mobility management in móbile cellular communication networks, due to the need of using the signaling system resources in a careful way. Among the strategies of location management, the utilization of registration areas has been difunded since the emergence of the second generation mobile communication systems, allowing to reduce the resource consumption due to location updates. Another concept, named paging areas, has also been extensively employed, allowing to save resources utilized localization of mobile terminals during the call setup for mobile stations. Initially, the Location Area Partitioning Problem (LAPP) is treated as a graph partitioning problem, largely recognized as NP-complete ([GARE 79], [LENG 90]) and leading to the utilization of heuristics, able to produce good sub-optimal solutions. The heuristics are proposed to solve the more usual case, where location areas are coincident with paging areas, and the frequency spectrum (radio resources). With the same methodology, another problem, named Inter- Switch Handover Minimization Problem (ISHMP), is adequately solved, being its relevance due to the elevated system resource consumption and to the severe delays imposed to users when their Mobile Switching Centers are changed. Thus, the diminution of the occurrence of such events id advantageous from both the user`s and the system`s points of view. The heuristics are eddentially the same for the two problems, and it is shown the superiority of the quality of the quality of the obtained solutions, when comparing them with other published results. The work also presents discussion about mobility models employed in the study of problems and techniques in the mobile communications area. Among such models, the fluid flow and the gravitational models are highlighted. A study concerning to the signaling load imposed to the fixed network (including queries and location update traffic over databases) and to the air interface is presented. Finally, starting from the average rate of mobile terminated calls and from a previously defined user impatience threshold, a new proposal for the definition of the optimal number of cells per paging area is presented.

New contexts of distributed computing emphasize the need of programming abstractions able to deal with asynchronous communication and concurrent tasks. Event-driven or threaded programming models are able to deal with these issues, but each model presents particular advantages and problems. Normally, when choosing the model more appropriate for a context or problem, the programmer must deal directly with the difficulties related to this model, making the development task more complex. In this work we discuss a way to combine the advantages of the traditional programming models in order to support a programming interface more suitable for the programmer. We explore asynchronous communication and cooperative task management based on the co-routine construction. By using these concepts, we implement: (1) a set of operations for building client/server applications upon an asynchronous communication basis; and (2) a more appropriate programming interface for TinyOS, the state of the art of operating system for sensor networks.

Given the current scenario of constant organizational changes, many authors have been dedicated to study and research in project management, aiming to contribute to the process of changes implemented through projects. Based on the assumption that communication is the arena in which people and the organization itself can create meaning (WEICK, 1995), this dissertation aims to understand how communication is perceived by individuals and how it affects the processes of creation of sense when these individuals participate in a process of organizational change brought about by an implementation project of an ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning. A field survey was carried out by taking an ERP implementation project as a case study. The communication of the project was analyzed first from a positivist perspective, and later a counterpoint was made, in which the present work has deepened, with an interpretative perspective, using the theoretical model proposed by the Montreal School. The results of the research evidenced the importance of the role of communication as constitutive of the project and of the organization itself (TAYLOR and CASALI, 2010).

During the last decade, the widespread use of smart devices and mobile applications has led to a massive growth of the mobile traffic demand. Efficiency and scalability are therefore key criteria for the development of future cellular systems, in which device-to-device (D2D) communication is recognized as one of the promising technologies. D2D communication allows mobile users in physical proximity to communicate directly, bypassing the base station as in conventional cellular networks. In this thesis, we investigate some of the possible benefits and challenges brought by the introduction of D2D communication in cellular systems. In particular, we focus on resource management techniques for network-assisted D2D communication using cellular spectrum. Our main contributions lie in the context of mode selection, power control and (frequency/time) resource allocation mechanisms, recognized as key techniques to realize the promises of this technology.First, we investigate how the integration of D2D communication in cellular systems operating under dynamic Time Division Duplex (TDD) can enhance their energy efficiency. We perform joint optimization of mode selection, uplink/downlink transmission period, and power allocation to minimize the transmission energy consumption. The resource management problems for different scenarios are formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems. In several cases, we exploit the problems’ structure to design efficient algorithms that achieve optimal solutions in polynomial time. In the remaining cases, we propose a heuristic algorithm that computes near-optimal solutions while respecting practical constraints in terms of execution times and signalling overhead. Our simulations demonstrate that D2D communications in dynamic TDD systems can yield significant energy savings and improved spectral efficiency compared to traditional cellular communication.Second, we study the performance of various power control strategies applicable to D2D communications in 3GPP LTE networks. We compare them with an utility maximization approach that trades off spectrum efficiency and total transmit power consumption. Our numerical results suggest that the LTE power control scheme is well prepared for network-assisted D2D communications, especially from the cellular user perspective. However, for D2D users, the utility based scheme can provide gains in terms of SINR and power consumption. Finally, we investigate the subcarrier allocation problem for uplink transmissions ina D2D-enabled network. We focus on maximizing the aggregate transmission rate of the system. In addition to the traditional inter-cell interference, we also account for the intra-cell interference caused by D2D pairs reusing cellular resources. This problem is computationally hard due to its nonconvex and combinatorial nature. However, we show that it can be described as a potential game; hence, we can find a Nash equilibrium using iterative algorithms based on best/better response dynamics.

Abstract—Emissions, travel times and traffic congestions in urban areas have become a central issue with increasing urban- isation. By actively monitoring and managing traffic flow via traffic lights there can be extensive improvements in these areas. To enable communication between infrastructure components an underlying network is needed to route information. These networks can be both centralised and decentralised which both have advantages and disadvantages. By studying and modifying existing network models, such as the Bara´basi-Albert and Erdo˝s- Re´nyi, an algorithm that generate a robust and safe communi- cation network can be constructed, which has been the main goal of the project. To ensure that an optimal model is being used, robustness was analysed by comparing parameters such as average node degree, network diameter, clustering and effi- ciency. Network robustness was prioritised as it ensures network reliability and resilience and this led to the conclusion that a decentralised network model was suitable for the application.

Scholars often need to search for matching, high-profile sci-entific events to publish their research results. Information about topical focus and quality of events is not made suÿciently explicit in the existing communication channels where events are announced. Therefore, schol-ars have to spend a lot of time on reading and assessing calls for papers but might still not find the right event. Additionally, events might be overlooked because of the large number of events announced every day. We introduce OpenResearch, a crowd sourcing platform that supports researchers in collecting, organizing, sharing and disseminating informa-tion about scientific events in a structured way. It enables quality-related queries over a multidisciplinary collection of events according to a broad range of criteria such as acceptance rate, sustainability of event series, and reputation of people and organizations. Events are represented in di˙erent views using map extensions, calendar and time-line visualiz-ations. We have systematically evaluated the timeliness, usability and performance of OpenResearch.

Several issues have become important due to recent developments in communication devices and services, especially with increase in wireless and wireline devices and networking options. These are, congestion in area codes, number portability, need to support intelligent networking, wireless-wireline integration, and demand for new user services. For meeting the requirements needed to overcome the associated problems, new numbering schemes are being proposed. Such schemes would not only relieve the extra burden on conventional geographical area codes due to the addition of vast numbers of wireless units, but also provide additional implementation benefits. Such schemes would also make it possible to associate multiple devices with a person, and multiple persons with a device, while giving people the option to have a single point where they can define who can reach them, at what device, and at what times. The proposed scheme, termed Globally Unique Portable Numbering (GUPN), uses data compression to achieve a format which has the same number of digits as the North American Numbering Plan and offers easy integration into current telephone numbering. An addressing scheme is also proposed for fixed components of communication systems and for reporting current locations of mobile devices. We call this the Globally Unique Fixed Location Numbering (GUFLN) addressing for fixed components. A performance analysis of the proposed scheme is conducted in comparison with existing schemes by considering the following criteria---number congestion with increase in number of persons and devices, amount of data transmitted and stored, and call routing and location update costs. Further studies are conducted using a queuing theory framework for evaluating a variety of possible database architectures with different levels of data replication for implementation of this person-based numbering scheme. Delays in query and update operations are used as the performance metrics for four such representative database architectures. The practical issues arising from implementation considerations are also discussed with possible solutions. This scheme is expected to offer contributions towards Number Portability (NP), Wireless Intelligent Networks (WIN), and wireless-wireline integration.

The traditional way of increasing capacity in a wirelesscommunication system has been cell splitting and fixedchannel-allocation based on prediction tools. However, theplanning complexity increases rapidly with the number of cellsand the method is not suitable for the large temporal andspatial traffic variations expected in the future. A lot ofresearch has therefore been performed regarding adaptivechannel allocation, where a channel can be used anywhere aslong as the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is acceptable. Acommon opinion is that these solutions must be decentralizedsince a centralized one would be overly complex.

In this thesis, we study the locally centralizedbunch conceptfor radio resource management (RRM) in aManhattan environment and show that it can give a very highcapacity both for outdoor users and for indoor users covered byoutdoor base stations. We show how measurement limitations anderrors affect the performance and wepropose methods to handlethese problems, e.g. averaging of measured values, robustchannel selection algorithms, and increased SIR margins. Wealso study the computational and signaling complexities andshow that they can be reduced by splitting large bunches, usingsparse matrix calculations, and by using a simplified admissionalgorithm. However, a reduction of the complexity often means areduction of the system capacity.

The measurements needed for RRM can also be used to find amobile terminal's geographical position. We propose and studysome simple yet accurate methods for this purpose. We alsostudy if position information can enhance RRM as is oftensuggested in the literature. In the studied scenario, thisinformation seems to be of limited use. One possible use is toestimate the mobile user's speed, to assist handover decisions.Another use is to find the location of user hotspots in anarea, which is beneficial for system planning.

Our results show that the bunch concept is a promisingcandidate for radio resource management in future wirelesssystems. We believe that the complexity is manageable and themain price we have to pay for high capacity is frequentreallocation of connections.

A novel flexible channel allocation scheme is proposed which is applicable to medium altitude, high diversity satellite personal communication systems with an interconnected ground control segment. The scheme is built upon the establishment of several temporal master-slave network hierarchies in distinct areas of the Earth, whereby the control of radio resources in each area is granted to a single network entity, the master, located at one of the network's fixed earth station sites. The master station is entrusted with the radio resource management functionality equivalent to a base station controller in GSM, whereas the slaves, which consist of all FES sites which control satellites that have a current connectivity with the master's area, share the functionality of a GSM base transceiver station with the satellites under their control. The master maintains a table of all channel allocations within its control area in real-time, its objective is to maximise the number of channels which can be provided in its area, in response to channel requests by users, subject to known interference criteria. It can achieve this by optimising the existing and future channel allocations through the use of predictive satellite coverage, spotbeam gain models and genetic algorithms. Radio resource related signalling between master and slave stations is performed through a dedicated terrestrial fibre-optic network which interconnects the FES sites, based upon GSM interface specifications which are adapted to account for the increased propagation delays and signalling load associated with the regional network. The potential capacity gain which is available through a centralised optimisation approach over a fixed channel allocation scheme is determined through simulation. The instantaneous capacity of each scheme is highly dependent on the traffic distribution and the positions of the satellites, which causes an analytical approach to be too restrictive or simplistic. The capacity gain estimation is performed over a time period for which several samples are taken and a powerful adapted genetic algorithm is applied to the NP complete problem to determine the maximum capacity. The flexible dynamic system, entitled the hybrid-centralised DCA scheme, is shown to have a raw capacity potential in excess of the FCA scheme under the traffic distribution scenario adopted.

Annotation:
The research study explores issues of management and communication from a gender perspective in secondary schools. It arose from a concern regarding the imbalance of men and women progressing to middle and higher management posts in secondary schools in England, as shown in the statistics published by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in a series of three documents from 1992 to 2001. The research problem concerns the possibility that there are gender differences in management communicative repertoires, which have the effect of undermining women's chances of promotion. Using case studies of four middle managers of both sexes in each of four secondary schools in one Midlands county of the UK, from 1995 to 2001, I observed, audio-recorded, and analysed team meetings as a non-participant observer. I transcribed key sequences, and, using the framework of discourse analysis, I investigated whether there were linguistic differences between the male and female middle managers, in order to analyse the way that language reflects management style, and to explore the possibility that linguistic differences might influence the under-representation of women in management posts. The research used qualitative methods, based on the post-modern constructivist approach to gender as a social construct, and on a dialectical approach to linguistic theory, focusing on the role of context, pragmatic speech activity and the function of utterances within interactions. The originality of the enquiry is that it uses discourse analysis of real managerial transactions by male and female middle managers taking place in regularly scheduled meetings in the workplace. I also investigated the organisational culture of the four schools in which the meetings were set, using a content analysis of documents and semi-structured interviews with the headteachers in each case. Much of the research into gender linguistics over the last decade has been of a feminist orientation and focused on one interpretation: that there are distinct gender differences in language use which reflect very different management styles and that women are, by default, negatively valued as potential managers. The argument has been that women's style is interpreted as falling short of a valued masculine model of language and management which is regarded as the norm. However, in this thesis I argue that communication processes are different for men and women, because they bring different frame and schema to their interactions and that while this may mismatch the style valued by their assessors, however, the language of male and female middle managers is also influenced by frames other than that of gender, such as that of the middle manager role and that of the organisational culture of the school. I explore the usefulness of the Community of Practice model, which has developed over the last five years, as a tool for describing language variation between genders, across organisational cultures and within shared enterprises, since it can be used to explain the overlapping sets of shared linguistic traits between different linguistic groups.

The researcher investigated whether frontline, tacit knowledge about zoo animals was captured by zookeepers, curators, researchers, veterinarians, and outside researchers and, if so, whether and how it was transmitted into the scholarly literature. A bibliometric analysis was done of a representative sample of peer-reviewed zoo research articles published between 1973 and 200 I. This was extended to grey literature and acknowledgements statements from the same period to obtain a more global picture. Research participants were evaluated in terms of their contributions (journal articles, conference papers, or acknowledged research assistance). Changes were mapped chronologically and by profess ion. The participation of keepers and curators was of particular interest, as was the role of tacit knowledge and its intergenerational transmission. The role of outside researchers in zoos was examined, as was the use of zoo research by the wider scientific community, as measured through citations by non-zoo authors. Interviews with a cross-section of zoo research personnel completed the portrait of zoo research during these decades. The study found that keepers' university training did not change their status as invisible research assistants and inter professional tensions remained high, despite higher educational levels among keepers and curators. The rise in female research participants was not proportional to the shift from mainly male to mainly female staff over time. Only a tiny percentage of zoo research was heavily cited by outside researchers. Zoo biology showed some signs of becoming an academic discipline, but continued to rely heavily on tacit knowledge. Outside collaborators quickly lost interest in zoos, due to numerous obstacles. The study concluded that an institution's research productivity was a function of leadership, rather than size, budget or number of personnel. Minimizing the role of tacit knowledge in favor of scientific research area hurt the transmission of invaluable oral folklore, particularly among keepers. It was recommended that zoos capture their tacit knowledge base to meet their conservation goals more efficiently and respond more effectively to critics of zoos' scientific approach. Finally, mentoring programs would enable more staff to participate in research and publishing.

Purpose: We tested relationships between patient-centered communication (PCC), relatedness to health care providers, and autonomy around health care management among youth with and without mobility limitations (MLs) and examined whether the relationship between PCC and autonomy was mediated by how connected youth feel to their health care providers. Methods: Stratified multiple regression models were used to examine predicted associations for youth with and without MLs. Results: PCC was significantly associated with relatedness to health care providers and autonomy for managing health care among youth with and without MLs. After controlling for covariates, evidence of mediation was observed among youth without MLs but not for youth with MLs. Conclusions: For youth without MLs, mediation suggests that youth's connection to their health care provider contributes to higher levels of health-related autonomy. For youth with MLs, independent of feeling connected to health care providers, more frequent PCC resulted in higher levels of health-related autonomy.

Doutoramento conjunto MAPi em Informática
Over the last decade, the most widespread approaches for traditional management were based on the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) or Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP). However, they both have several problems in terms of scalability, due to their centralization characteristics. Although the distributed management approaches exhibit better performance in terms of scalability, they still underperform regarding communication costs, autonomy, extensibility, exibility, robustness, and cooperation between network nodes. The cooperation between network nodes normally requires excessive overheads for synchronization and dissemination of management information in the network. For emerging dynamic and large-scale networking environments, as envisioned in Next Generation Networks (NGNs), exponential growth in the number of network devices and mobile communications and application demands is expected. Thus, a high degree of management automation is an important requirement, along with new mechanisms that promote it optimally and e ciently, taking into account the need for high cooperation between the nodes. Current approaches for self and autonomic management allow the network administrator to manage large areas, performing fast reaction and e ciently facing unexpected problems. The management functionalities should be delegated to a self-organized plane operating within the network, that decrease the network complexity and the control information ow, as opposed to centralized or external servers. This Thesis aims to propose and develop a communication framework for distributed network management which integrates a set of mechanisms for initial communication, exchange of management information, network (re) organization and data dissemination, attempting to meet the autonomic and distributed management requirements posed by NGNs. The mechanisms are lightweight and portable, and they can operate in di erent hardware architectures and include all the requirements to maintain the basis for an e cient communication between nodes in order to ensure autonomic network management. Moreover, those mechanisms were explored in diverse network conditions and events, such as device and link errors, di erent tra c/network loads and requirements. The results obtained through simulation and real experimentation show that the proposed mechanisms provide a lower convergence time, smaller overhead impact in the network, faster dissemination of management information, increase stability and quality of the nodes associations, and enable the support for e cient data information delivery in comparison to the base mechanisms analyzed. Finally, all mechanisms for communication between nodes proposed in this Thesis, that support and distribute the management information and network control functionalities, were devised and developed to operate in completely decentralized scenarios.

Steyn, Benita. „Strategic management roles of the corporate communication function“. Diss., University of Pretoria, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32454.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Chief executives (CEOs) and other senior managers do not seem to be satisfied with the performance of their corporate communication managers/practitioners. Perceptions are that practitioners fail to assume broad decision making roles in organisations. They seem to be unable to see the big picture or understand the key issues in their industry -- their thinking is tactical, rather than strategic. Practitioners are focused on their own activities and media, on the achievement of communication goals and objectives -- without necessarily linking them to business goals. There appears to be a lack of understanding between top management and the corporate communication function on the latter's role in the strategic management process. This situation might be the result of a lack of strategic management and strategic communication knowledge and skills amongst corporate communication managers, possibly caused by insufficient training in these areas (Groenewald 1998a). The research objectives addressed by this study are the following: Firstly, to conceptualise a strategic role for the corporate communication practitioner at the top management level of the organisation (the role of the PR strategist). This is done by investigating the strategic management literature to determine whether a need exists at the top management level to play a strategic role. The behavioural activities of such a role were identified both from the public relations and the strategic management literature. Secondly, to conceptualise corporate communication strategy as an activity of a corporate communication practitioner in the role of the PR manager, a strategic role at the functional or meso level of the organisation. Furthermore, to differentiate a corporate communication strategy from a communication plan. Thirdly, to hypothesise a model for developing corporate communication strategyand thereafter to implement, evaluate and improve the model by assessing and comparing the corporate communication strategy projects of third year corporate communication students at the University of Pretoria, as partners in the action research process. The research approach selected is qualitative research -- an exploratory design is employed in achieving the first three objectives by means of a literature investigation. A confirmatory design is used for the implementation, evaluation and improvement of the model through the methodology of action research. In implementing, evaluating and revising the hypothesised model, this study moves away from the traditional teacher-centred approach in the classroom to a situation where students are involved in a research inquiry to build theory. At the same time, the participant community (non-profit organisations in this case) is exposed to strategic communication knowledge. They are involved in a process whereby they become active participants (together with the students and the lecturer/researcher) in developing corporate communication strategy for their organisations. The results are twofold: firstly, staff members of the non-profit organisation (as well as the students) acquire strategic communication skills; and secondly, the researcher investigates a new area of interest, builds theory, and facilitates a learning process for students whereby they obtain experience and knowledge that is applicable to practice. In conceptualising both a new role for the corporate communication practitioner at the top management level (the role of the PR strategist), and proposing corporate communication strategy as the link between the communication plan and the corporate strategy, an attempt is made to provide possible solutions to important problems in practice.

This research study examined the general business problem that ineffective communications caused project management outcomes that lead to increased business costs. The specific business problem was complexity experienced by virtual teams, due to the lack of physicality, contributed to environmental barriers and ineffective communications. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to capture the lived experiences of project leaders who managed the complexity associated with virtual communication environmental barriers. The research question was: What are the lived experiences and informed perceptions of project leaders who managed the complexity associated with virtual communication environmental barriers? The conceptual framework guiding this inquiry was comprised of complexity theory’s complex adaptive systems framework to include project leadership, team dynamics, virtual communication environments, communication method selection, and the management organization as the integrating components that influenced complexity. Data was gathered through telephone interviews conducted with 14 certified project management professionals sourced from LinkedIn, all of whom experienced project complexity and communication challenges within the virtual environment. The resulting data transcripts were analyzed using NVivo 11. The research question was answered through the findings that revealed a central theme and sub-themes of managing complexity due to virtual environments and communication barriers. The research findings indicated sub-themes of five virtual environments experienced by the research participants, created by the type of communication tools’ attributes that were experienced. The virtual environments were established from the types of communication links by using specific tools, and not defined as the physical environments based on locations of the senders and receivers. Secondly, the research findings indicated sub-themes of internal environmental barriers that were created inside of the project teams by people, language, culture, training, and leadership. Thirdly, the research findings indicated sub-themes of external environmental barriers that were created outside of the project teams by executive leadership, organizational structure, and customer relationship. Fourth, the research findings indicated sub-themes of task and project outcomes included project failure, project success, and project recovery. The results of this study contributed to the business practice through the findings that indicated how the participants managed communication environments through implementing processes, leadership escalations, communication tool selection, reduced feedback delays of communication, and built relationships among the team members that were central to managing the complexity in virtual teams. In addition, this study contributed to research by providing a holistic description of the virtual environments, identification of communication environmental barriers, and consolidated understandings from other studies.

The growth of social media has set demands on organizations to be online and interact with stakeholders, especially during a crisis. The public are no longer seen as passive receivers of marketing messages. Previous studies have shown that the need for information increases during a crisis. Social media can be a powerful tool if is used strategically. This case study looks deeper into Oxfam’s 2018 Haiti sexual exploitation scandal, as an attempt to understand how organizations communicate on social media during a crisis. By co-applying multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) and the social-mediated crisis communication (SMCC) model, a broader understanding of how the crisis was handled can be developed. The data consists of four Instagram posts that will be analyzed, drawing upon four multimodal frameworks from Machin (2017): Iconography: the ‘hidden meanings’ of images; The meaning of color in visual design; The meaning of typography; and Representation of social actors in images. In order to obtain a broader picture of the strategies, key public and relationships, the components of the SMCC model will be identified and presented for this case. The result of this study shows that multiple response strategies have been used to communicate both tailored messages and unified organizational messages. It is apparent that Oxfam did not have a clear strategy and altered between apologizing, “blaming” individuals within the organization and distancing themselves from the crisis.

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Business Administration in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
Change management and communication have been studied by researchers in the past. In this case the researcher identified the need to investigate specific factors influencing the successful communication of change at a workplace. The organisation used in this study recently experienced a range of changes and was the perfect case for the study. The paper deals with the communication of change to employees of different (1) age groups, (2) levels of education, and (3) positions in the organisation. The planning for this study was presented in a research proposal to the higher degrees committee (HDC) of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). The researcher reviewed literature from previous studies and defined key concepts to be used in this study. The revised literature of previous studies, applicable to this study, can be found in Chapter 3 of this thesis. The researcher used the mixed method research design for the study. Data was collected through qualitative and quantitative research methods, using a questionnaire and interviews as data collection tools. The data collected with the questionnaire was analysed by use of the statistical package for social science (SPSS) to generate descriptive results. The data collected during the interviews was analysed qualitatively. The research findings indicate that the organisational change communication strategy does not provide for differentiation between age groups, varying education levels or positions in the organisation. The division, in which the research was performed, has its own internal ways of dealing with the differences in education levels and positions. Recommendations and suggestions are presented in Chapter 7. It is intended that this research will contribute to academic knowledge in the fields of change management and change communication fields. Further studies on this phenomenon will be required as the organisational environments are ever-changing.

As humans we find communicating natural and compelling. Over the centuries we have created many innovations which enable and improve communication between people; during the past decade mobile phone networks have brought about a technological revolution in this area. Never before have people been so connected to one another. Today we have the ability to communicate with almost anyone, anytime, anywhere. Our increased connectivity and reachability also leads to new issues and challenges that we need to deal with. When we phone someone we expect an instant connection, and when this does not occur it can be frustrating. On the other hand it is equally disruptive to receive a call when one is busy with an important task or in a situation where communication is inappropriate. Social protocol dictates that we try to minimize such situations for the benefit of others nearby and for ourselves. This management of communications is a constant and difficult task. Using presence – which signals a person’s availability and willingness to communicate – is a solution to this problem. Such information can benefit communication partners by increasing the likelihood of a successful connection and decreasing disruptions. This research addresses the problem of staying connected while keeping control over mobile communications. It adopts a design-science research paradigm, with the primary research artifact being a model for privacy-aware presence management in mobile communications. As part of the model development knowledge contributions are made in several ways. Existing knowledge about the problem area is extended through a quantitative analysis of mobile communications management. This analysis uses a novel survey, collecting useful empirical data for future research. This includes how people currently manage their communications and what features they expect from a potential “call management” system. The examination and use of presence standards, as a foundation for the model, provides a comparison of the main presence technologies available today. A focus on privacy features identifies several shortcomings in standards which, if addressed, can help to improve and make these standards more complete. The model stresses the privacy of potentially sensitive presence information. A unique perspective based on social relationship theories is adopted. The use of relationship groups not only makes logical sense but also assists in the management of presence information and extends existing standards. Finally, the evaluation of the model demonstrates the feasibility of a practical implementation as well the ability to extend the model in next generation mobile networks. Thus the model presents a solid foundation for the development of future services. In these ways the proposed model contributes positively towards balancing efficient mobile communications with the need for privacy-awareness.

Thesis (MTech (Quality))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2015.
The fundamental activities of a business can be summarized as being a cycle of strategy development and implementation, operations design and management and finally performance measurement, which feeds back into strategy design. This research aims to determine whether visual management can assist the quality motive by adding value to the above‐mentioned business activities for start‐up businesses and strategic business units within the South African context. The main topics to be addressed are performance management and visual management (VM). Performance management entails investigating the concept of strategy, its formulation and eventual implementation; performance measurement; improvement initiatives and greater quality theory. Visual management will be introduced as an angle on corporate communication and the importance of sharing information indiscriminately throughout the organisation. Both empirical and non-‐empirical research methods are used to answer the question of the impact of VM on business activities. The first involves a theoretical synthesis from the literature, the second was based on interviews with professionals from the relevant industries, the third is content analysis of the above.
