ABSTRACT Large-scale genomic rearrangements including inversions, deletions, and duplications are significant in bacterial evolution. The recently completed Brucella melitensis 16M and Brucella suis 1330 genomes have facilitated the investigation of such events in the Brucella spp. Suppressive subtractive hybridization (SSH) was employed in identifying genomic differences between B. melitensis 16M and Brucella abortus 2308. Analysis of 45 SSH clones revealed several deletions on chromosomes of B. abortus and B. melitensis that encoded proteins of various metabolic pathways. A 640-kb inversion on chromosome II of B. abortus has been reported previously (S. Michaux Charachon, G. Bourg, E. Jumas Bilak, P. Guigue Talet, A. Allardet Servent, D. O'Callaghan, and M. Ramuz, J. Bacteriol. 179:3244-3249, 1997) and is further described in this study. One end of the inverted region is located on a deleted TATGC site between open reading frames BMEII0292 and BMEII0293. The other end inserted at a GTGTC site of the cyclic-di-GMP phosphodiesterase A (PDEA) gene (BMEII1009), dividing PDEA into two unequal DNA segments of 160 and 977 bp. As a consequence of inversion, the 160-bp segment that encodes the N-terminal region of PDEA was relocated at the opposite end of the inverted chromosomal region. The splitting of the PDEA gene most likely inactivated the function of this enzyme. A recombination mechanism responsible for this inversion is proposed.

Karpenko, Svitlana. „ASPECTS OF STUDYING THE UKRAINIAN FOLK TALE IN THE LAST THIRD OF THE 20th CENTURY: FORMATION OF A NEW SCHOOL OF TALE SCIENCE“. Bulletin of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Literary Studies. Linguistics. Folklore Studies, Nr. 29 (2021): 10–13. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/1728-2659.2021.29.2.

The last third of the 20th century in folklore is marked by the revival of methodology and editorial practice. International experience in studying fairy tales (creation of indexes, dictionaries, and theoretical research) had a positive effect on the development of Ukrainian storytelling, in particular its international character, but negatively created an atmosphere of national inferiority of Ukrainian science, inability to discover something new and original in its own folklore. The basis for writing our study was the work of Ukrainian storytellers (I. Berezovskyi, M. Gyrak, M. Zinchuk, L. Dunaevska), dating from the last third of the 20th century. The study also uses fairy tale works of domestic and foreign scientists in their consistent and logical interaction; points to the international issues raised by scholars in relation to the study of folk tales, its genre basis and poetics. Based on the review of collections of fairy tales, conclusions are made about the dynamics of improving the methodology of recording and publishing fairy tale narratives. Giving an assessment of the state of development of Ukrainian science of fairy tales, we can state: 1) Ukrainian storytelling of the last third of the 20th century developed in theoretical and practical aspects. The appearance of multi-volume collections of fairy tales by M. Gyrak and M. Zinchuk, as well as serial editions by L. Dunaevska laid the foundations for further theoretical research; 2) the participation of Ukrainian storytellers in international projects of indexes of plots and motives of fairy tales testified the high level of methods of studying the genre. The work of scientists has contributed to the emergence not only of textbooks, indexes and encyclopedias, but also university departments; 3) L. Dunaevska's theoretical works formed a new school of fairy tale studies, which focuses on the international context.

We studied the effects of reindeer grazing on species richness and diversity of vascular plants on dolomite influenced low alpine sites in the species rich northern part of the Scandes using 8 sites with different reindeer densities. Two sites were situated inside Malla Strict Nature Reserve, where reindeer grazing have been totally prohibited since 1981, and strongly restricted since 1950s. The six other sites were located in other species rich hotspot sites standardized to be as similar to the dolomite-influenced sites in Malla Strict Reserve as possible but varying in reindeer densities commonly found in the Fennoscandian mountain chain. Each site with a habitat complex especially rich in rare vascular plants (the Dryas heath – low herb meadow complex) was systematically sampled in four plots of 2 m x 10 m. The plots were divided to 20 squares of 1 m x 1 m, and complete species lists of vascular plants were compiled for each of the squares. The first DCA (detrended correspondence analysis) axis was strongly related to an index of reindeer grazing, indicating that grazing has a strong impact on the composition of the vegetation. None of the characteristics indices of biodiversity (species richness, evenness or Shannon-Wiener H’) was correlated with reindeer density. The local abundances of categories consisting of relatively rare plants (Ca favored plants and red listed plants of Finland) showed significant, positive correlation with the intensity of reindeer grazing. We conclude that even though the density of reindeer has no influence on the total species richness or diversity of vascular plants, reindeer may still be important for regional biodiversity as it seems to favour rare and threatened plants. Moreover, our results imply that standard diversity indices may have limited value in the context of conservation biology, as these indices are equally influenced by rarities and by trivial species.

The essay deals with the interaction between the genre transformations of the author fairy tale and the national problematics, as well as the question of the modern strategies of genre renewal on the example of the texts by modern Russian and Hungarian writers (“The Moscow fairy tales” by A. Kabakov, “The fairy tales not about people” by A. Stepa-nov, “The Budapest fairy tales” and “The supermarket fairy tales” by A. Mosonyi). Among other questions, I address the so-called “genre me-mory” (M. Lipovetsky’s term), which in the texts by Kabakov, Stepanov, and Mosonyi functions at the level of entire cycles but rarely at the level of separate texts. With regard to the fi eld of children’s literature, the na-tional locus makes the texts appear more modern-looking and therefore appealing to an adult reader who rediscovers the details of everyday life. The opposite strategy is often applied in the philosophical, parable or political fairy tales, when the authors give priority to the nation-specifi c, nuanced and recognizable locus, which at the same time receives the features of the fairy tale or mythological space.

The present paper examines intersemiotic translation of magic folk tales. Research objective is to show the structural identity of the surface structure which can be described as a sequence of plot elements (“functions”) of fairy-tale characters; in semiotic terms it is explained by the existence of a universal matrix defining the law of genre. The authors go on to the cognitive-culturological aspect of fairy tales in terms of N. Chomsky. This research paper has clearly shown that “functions” of the surface structures correspond to plans, scenarios and frames of the deep structures, which differ in British and Russian magic fairy folk tales (wonder folk tales). Numbers and proper names are the main permanent elements of fairy tale narrative: on the level of the surface structures they connect the universal matrix of a fairy tale discourse organizing space and rhythm and at the level of the deep structures - they help to understand the main features of the national character. The study is based on 13 fairy-tale film corpus, under the common theme “Beauty and the Beast”, film adaptations of the fairy tales “La Belle et la Bête” by J.-M. Leprens de Beaumont (1757) and “The Scarlet Flower” by S.T. Aksakov (1858). Hence, the analysis of the latter based on the works of R. Jacobson and W. Eco and understood by the authors as a kind of intersemiotic translation / interpretation that, on the one hand, proves universality of the proposed algorithm for studying fairy discourse in synchrony and diachrony. On the other hand, it plays the most important role in intersemiotic translation of diachronic aspect because it deals with changing the “integral model of reality”, which is reflected, in particular, in changing the on-screen presentation / interpretation of certain aspects of the fairy-tale narrative. Finally, it is worth pointing out that the conclusions can be used to study plurality of film adaptation as a form of intersemiotic translation.

The article attempts to consider the story of Nikolai Verevochkin “Draw Me a Golden Heart” as a literary fairy tale in order to reveal the intertextual links of this work with the “Little Prince” of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, “Blue Star” of A.I. Kuprin, “The Old Woman Isergil” of M. Gorky. The main attention is paid to the analysis and interpretation of functions of references and allusions, borrowings and other forms of intertext. According to the authors of the article, the fairy tale “Draw Me a Golden Heart” is created in a postmodern manner, the narrator on the principle of mise en abyme creates a diff erent world in which live his characters and the narrator himself, freely moving in space and time. The article also considers the points of contact of N. Verevochkin’s fairy tale with the tales of H.C. Andersen, A.I. Kuprin, M. Gorky in order to determine the common purpose of the works of these writers.

Abstract The article presents the Codices of Revúca as one of the most important sources of research on Slovak fairy tales through the interpretation of the Berona fairy tale. This topic as a whole but also in the context of the fairy tale theory is still unexplored, just like most similar manuscripts of Slovak romanticists who were at the birth of the folklore studies in their pre-scientific period. It is purposly conceived as a material study with the aim of demonstrating the need to return to archive sources and the research potential offered by such materials. It is, however, not the specific objective of this article to present an analysis of the texts quoted in the annex. The article consists of two parts. The first one evaluates the existing material base of the research on the Codices of Revúca (J. Polívka, M. Dzubáková), highlights the limitations arising from the marginalisation of the available materials, offers precise records from the Codices of Revúca on the texts for the interpretation of the fairy tale and, finally, corrects the information on one of the key texts from this source, the letter written by S. Reuss on December 17, 1843, the full translation of which forms part of the text in the annex. The second (analytical) part of the article deals with the contextualisation and comparison of three commentaries on the Berona fairy tale (S. Reuss, J. Francisci, S. Ormis). All three texts are fully available in the annex.

The influence of Edgar Allan Poe on North American culture and literature is still a subject of debate in contemporary literary theory. However, Poe’s creative legacy regarding the writings of Miriam Allen Deford remains neglected by the literary critics. Deford’s fiction explored a set of literary genres, such as biography, science fiction, crime and detective short stories. Taking these premises as a point of departure, this article aims to identify similarities between “A Death in the Family” and some of Poe’s works. Drawing on studies by J. T. Irwin, James M. Hutchisson and others, the objective of this paper is to analyze passages from Deford’s tale in comparison with the poetry and fictional prose of Poe. The analysis suggests that Deford’s horror short story “A Death in the Family,” published in 1961, was mostly inspired by Poe’s gothic tales, detective stories, and poems.

Mikhail Stogovskii is the pseudonym of the now-forgotten Siberian author Mikhail Nikolaevich Ananyev. In 1918–1919 he regularly published his satirical texts in the newspaper Russian Speech. The newspaper was published in the Siberian city, which was then called Novo-Nikolaevsk. M. Stogovskii describes the absurdity of modern reality, so he often uses quotations from newspapers as epigraphs that define a comic position. During two years of work in the Novikolaevsk’s newspaper, there is a dynamic in his texts: from light humorous texts to sharp satire about the new political regime. M. Stogovskii preferred allegorical genres (fables, fairy tales), many of which are devoted to the topic of political struggle at the end of 1918 and at the beginning of 1919. By the end of 1919, the Bolsheviks and their political regime became the main object of ridicule, because Siberia was still under the control of the White Army during the publication of the newspaper Russian Speech. Bolshevism was perceived as an enemy movement, the authors faced the task of creating not just an entertaining text, but creating negative images of the leaders of Bolshevism, therefore caricature images of Lenin and Trotskii often appear in feuilletons. However, M. Stogovskii created a satire on all levels of society, including the local government and ordinary citizens. He skillfully mastered such comic techniques as irony and sarcasm, creating multi-valued, multi-level jokes and ridicule. This talent allowed M. Stogovskii to stand out among a large number of his contemporary feuilleton authors.

Psychologists often use the name of the protagonist of the fairy tale “Cinderella”, which is famous thanks to the brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, for a sacrificial girl prone to dissociation, illusions, and waiting for a prince. This is typical for psychoanalysis. However, such an idea of Cinderella’s character does not fully reflect the essence of the matter. Moreover, it is generally not true. From the perspective of C.G. Jung’s analytical psychology, Cinderella is not a victim or an infantile dreamer and is not a real girl at all. Any tale represents an archetypal process of individuation. This is a collective natural constant of the psyche that excludes individual problems. Cinderella cultivated in herself what the ancient Greeks called “paideia” – the integrity of the personality and inner strength, influence on others. The purpose of the article is to describe the process of Cinderella’s individualization from the position of C.G. Jung’s archetypal approach based on the amplification method. The most relevant sources of recent years on the archetypal analysis of fairy tales are the works by M.-L. von Franz, H. Dieckmann, and C.P. Estés. The novelty of the study consists in the description and analysis of the archetypal images of the collective unconscious, which underlie the process of Cinderella’s individuation and determine her life path. These archetypal images are Persona, Self, Shadow, Anima/Animus, and the symbolic levels of the individuation process can be represented by such alchemical terms as “separation”, “multiplication”, “calcination”, “initiation”, “transformation”, “conjunction”, “solidification”. The levels testify to the character’s inner transformation and, as a result, lead to a happy woman’s destiny. The result of understanding the deep essence of the tale is a psychologist’s analytical work with modern young women, which will lead to positive changes in thinking and behavior.

The article discusses the transformation of the image of ‘eternal’ Sonechka, originating in F. Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment [Prestuplenie i nakazanie] and undergoing subsequent changes while preserving the stability of an archetype and acquiring new meanings in M. Tsvetaeva’s The Tale of Sonechka [Povest o Sonechke] (1938), T. Tolstaya’s short story Sonya (1984) and L. Ulitskaya’s novel Sonechka (1992). In following the logic of the heroine’s development, the author finds that all Sonechkas share such features as femininity, loyalty, and an inherent ability to ‘radiate passionate enthusiasm and give warmth:’ this talent for self-sacrifice can be realized in a family, in one’s attitude towards art or a lover, or just by mistake (as in the case of T. Tolstaya’s Sonya). It is easy to see that all female authors in focus of L. Korotkova’s article, while polemicizing with Dostoevsky in that they exaggerate the heroine’s traits to absurd proportions, fall under the spell of the charming ‘eternal Sonechka as long as the world lasts.’ The undying interest of Russian literature in this character only confirms its archetypal status in Russian culture.

Created in the form of “1001 Nights” “The Orphan’s Tales” by Catherynne M. Valente is filled with intertwined stories and plots. The article is devoted to the origin of a “story within a story” and its manifestation in the novel. The need of transferring the sacred knowledge of myth was the reason of emergence of coherent narratives, which aimed to support and approve the human beings in the unknown world around them. By his storytelling the narrator asserts the right to exist, in the verbal way he reflects the cycle of natural phenomena. He states the threefold semantic equivalence: his divine embodiment as the protagonist, the related to this his actions and gestures (acts) and his story about himself and his deeds. As a verbal sacrifice the story is offered to the god – the only listener who is able to understand and to accept it. This kind of tale keeps the signs of sacral. The intention to verbal concealing of the sacred was implemented in the structure of “story within a story”, or embedded stories. When we highlight the listener as the separate category in storytelling, we can describe it in the following way. Listener is an equal participant of sacral narrating. Like the storyteller the listener carries out the function of co-creating – he duplicates the storyteller on the semantic level. As for “The Orphan’s Tales”, the unique discourse of telling-listening as stated trough the numerous characters who tell and listen to each other. They carry out some particular functions: active listener; listener-transmitter; listener-composer.

From the 18th century on Arabian Nights has been influencing European imaginary, especially culture and literature. It created European vision of the Orient as well. In the 20th century popular culture gave high recognisability to many elements of Arabian Nights (such as characters: Sindbad, Aladdin or magical artefacts: a flying carpet, magic lamp). Scheherazade as an allegory for narrative art became the most important figure for scholars studying the book. The paper shows how two contemporary book cycles make intertextual links to Arabian Nights . Orphan’s Tale by Catherynne M. Valente, Harun and the Sea of stories and Luka and the fire of Life by Salman Rushdie rewrite the elements of Arabian Nights , such as characters, artefacts and linguistic allusion to the Orient. However, the narration in the works by both writers is completely different: Valente recreated a sophisticated device of narration known from the book, whereas Rushdie gave his novels a simple, linear composition. Scheherazade’s gift to spin story out of a life is needed for different aims. For Rushdie telling fairy tales is useful in writing about life of literature itself, for Valente it is important for creating an alternative to the patriarchal vision of the world.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the explanatory capacity of the Spanish Triathlon Federation’s talent identification tests in relation to performance in competition in subsequent years. We used an exploratory longitudinal study design to establish the relationship between talent identification tests completed by 247 triathletes (97 women and 150 men) aged from 14 to 19 years and the results they obtained over the years in competition. The battery of tests included freestyle swimming (100 and 1000 m) and running (400 and 1000 m). The results indicate that the explanatory capacity of these tests for split places in competition in the corresponding discipline was highest in the 1000-m swimming test, with a value of 0.34 for the adjusted coefficient of determination (R2a) (p ≤ 0.001), followed by the 1000-m running and 100-m swimming tests, where the highest R2a values were 0.26 and 0.19, respectively. No significant model was found for the 400-m running test. It was concluded that the explanatory capacity of the tests analysed for predicting performance in the discipline in competition was low. However, it was higher for the swimming and running tests of longer distance.

Purpose:Investigating adolescent training loads might help us understand optimal training adaptations. GPS tracking devices and training diaries were used to quantify weekly sport and other physical activity demands placed on adolescent rugby union players and profile typical rugby training sessions. Methods:Participants were 75 males age 14 to 18 y who were recruited from rugby teams representing 3 levels of participation: schoolboy, national representative, and a selective sports school talent squad. Results:Schoolboy players covered a distance of (mean ± SD) 3511 ± 836 m, representative-squad players 3576 ± 956 m, and talent-squad players 2208 ± 637 m per rugby training session. The representative squad recorded the highest weekly duration of sport and physical activity (515 ± 222 min/wk), followed by the talent squad (421 ± 211 min/week) and schoolboy group (370 ± 135 min/wk). Profiles of individual players identified as group outliers showed participation in up to 3 games and up to 11 training sessions per week, with twice the weekly load of the team averages. Conclusion:Optimal participation and performance of adolescent rugby union players might be compromised by many high-load, high-impact training sessions and games and commitments to other sports and physical activities. An improved understanding of monitoring and quantifying load in adolescent athletes is needed to facilitate best-practice advice for player management and training prescription.

<p>The subject of this paper is the transformation of the poetics of Cupid and Psyche plot in its national and historical modifications in European literature. The methodology of the analysis is based on mythological studies (A.&nbsp;N.&nbsp;Veselovsky, A.&nbsp;F.&nbsp;Losev) and genre studies (M.&nbsp;M.&nbsp;Bakhtin, S.&nbsp;S.&nbsp;Averintsev, E.&nbsp;M.&nbsp;Meletinsky, etc.). Allegorization of the images of Love and Soul appeared in the antiquity long before the novel by Apuleius &ldquo;Asinus Aureus&rdquo; or &ldquo;Metamorphoses&rdquo; (the 2nd century AD). In a&nbsp;Greek epigram Eros is often associated with the element of fire that puts the soul&nbsp;&mdash; &ldquo;Psycho&rdquo;&nbsp;&mdash; to a variety of ordeals and tortures. In &ldquo;Metamorphoses&rdquo; by Apuleius the tale about Cupid and Psyche can be seen as an allegorical narration about the soul traveling around the world and looking for ways to Love and eternal life. Later, the parabolic core of the ancient story was enriched with new motifs from the arsenal of mythology, Neoplatonism and Christianity. The archetypical basis and platonic paradigm of the plot in &ldquo;Metamorphoses&rdquo; by Apuleius go together in a syncretic unity, that provides universality and polysemy of the different versions of tales about Cupid and Psyche in European literature. The neoplatonic version of the story, which interprets the reunion between Cupid and Psyche as the Union of God and Soul, is represented in literature by writings of Fulgentius, Boccaccio, Heine, Coleridge, Żuławski and others.</p>

The subject of this research is the Quranic narratives on the prophets in the books by A. Akayev, Shihammat-kadi from Erpeli, and Magomed Kazanbiev. In their works, tales on the prophets are interpreted and embellished with the corresponding Quranic ayats and hadiths. An attempts is made to determine cognitive function of the tales that would combine artistic virtues with folk elements, as well as frame a philosophical worldview. The worldview function of these tales is defined as humane by the spirit and logical by the method of interpretation of Islamic theosophy and ideology. It is worth noting that these tales and narratives contain the elements of folklore traditions (M. Kazanbiev &ldquo; The Radiant Story&rdquo;). Having analyzed the tales on the prophets described in the books by A. Akayev, Shihammat-kadi from Erpeli, and Magomed Kazanbiev, the author concludes that they represent the extensive authorial narratives based on Quranic themes. The conducted comparative analysis of the texts demonstrates that Shihammat-kadi from Erpel infuses more fiction elements, while A. Akayev places emphasis on the historical-biographical records on the prophets. Unlike the aforementioned authors, M. Kazanbiev describes and glorifies the actions and personal traits of a single prophet. Reference to the Quranic narratives on the prophets in the Kumyk religious literature allows tracing the peculiarities of their interpretation, determine the specificity of authorial narration, their style, as well as similarities and differences. The acquired results confirm that A. Akayev, Shihammat-kadi from Erpeli, and Magomed Kazanbiev embellish the Quranic texts in their works.

Annotation:
Contemporary culture is represented in the paper in the fairy tale optics in its ethical dimensions. Such prospects allow to ascertain ethical values which contemporaneity draws in archaic stratum of culture and generates basing on invariants of past. Using M. M. Bakhtin's ideas of great time of culture and outsideness, the author exposes a fairy tale as a phenomenon that once appeared in archaics but in every further cultural-historic period is able to represent its new facets what are unknown to all previous epochs. A fairy tale acts in therapeutic, orienting and educational functions since the time if its origins. Today a fairy tale has lost archaic horror tinge and obtained some romantic veil and moralistic color. These dimensions are reflected in an image of a hero. The paper points out the distinction between ethical and democratic heroes (the idea of M. E. Meletinsky). It is mentioned that content of an image of a democratic hero is better grasped by the N. Tec's concept a "dormant hero". It is a dormant hero whom contemporary culture comprehends most of all types of a fairy tale heroes. He leaves an impression that everybody can find oneself at his place. His heroic powers are ex- posed gradually. During the storytelling, it is turned out that he possesses definite virtues, personifies moral integrity. It is mentioned in the paper that today there are transformations in the comprehension what qualities are virtues. Qualities necessary for support of ancestors' cult as well as for keeping house were considered as virtues in archaic culture whereas contemporaneity represents in current fairy tale adaptations qualities clear for people today, such as valor, courage, resourcefulness, quick-wittedness. Virtues allow hero to negotiate obstacles, pass tests. Ethical pathos of a fairy tale is accumulated in victorious struggle against evil, for realization of justice, resumption of the lost equity. Ethical content of a fairy tale are visualized. At the basic level, visualization of good and evil is represented in immediate reality of beauty and ugliness. The second level of ethical content visualization is specified by imagination which allows audience to create images and visualize mean- ings in free flight of fancy. The third level is determined by proper ability of a fairy tale to use symbols. At that level, heroes are represented as symbols-keepers of cultural memory.
