Recent years have seen a dynamic development in statistical methods for analysing data contaminated with outliers. One of the more important techniques that can deal with outlying observations is robust regression, which represents four decades of research. Until recently the implementation of robust regression methods, such as M-estimation or MM-estimation, was limited owing to their iterative nature. With advances in computing power and the growing availability of statistical packages, such as R and SAS, Stata, the applicability of robust regression methods has increased considerably.The aim of the study is to evaluate one of these methods, namely M-estimation, using data from a survey of small and medium-sized businesses. The comparison involves nine M-estimators, each based on a different weighting function. The results and conclusions are formulated on the basis of empirical data from the DG-1 business survey.

<abstract><p>In this paper, several bootstrap properties of $ m $-generalized order statistics ($ m $-GOSs) with variable rank (central and intermediate) are revealed. We study the inconsistency, weak consistency and strong consistency of bootstrapping central and intermediate $ m $-GOSs when the normalizing constants are assumed to be known or estimated from the re-sampled data using a proper re-sample size. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the weak and strong consistencies of the bootstrapping distributions of central and intermediate $ m $-GOSs based on the normalizing constant estimators are given. Finally, a simulation study is conducted to determine the optimal bootstrap re-sample size corresponding to the best fitting of the bootstrapping distribution.</p></abstract>

Annotation:

We develop a method to approach quantum gases of quasiparticles with generalized statistics. This way is based on Fibonacci hierarchies and offers an alternative issue to the Haldane–Wu method. We give the statistical weights densities ρM of gases of quasiparticles with s = 1/M : mod (1), M ≥ 2, using the combinatorial aspects of M-generalized Fibonacci series. This is a remarkable feature which envelopes naturally the Fermi and Bose statistics.

Electrical and Computer Engineering<br>Ph.D.<br>Game theory is the study of tactical interactions involving conflicts and cooperations among multiple decision makers called players with applications in diverse disciplines such as economics, biology, management, communication networks, electric power systems and control. This dissertation studies a statistical differential game problem where finite N players optimize their system performance by shaping the distribution of their cost function through cost cumulants. This research integrates game theory with statistical optimal control theory and considers a statistical Nash non-cooperative nonzero-sum game for a nonlinear dynamic system with nonquadratic cost functions. The objective of the statistical Nash game is to find the equilibrium solution where no player has the incentive to deviate once other players maintain their equilibrium strategy. The necessary condition for the existence of the Nash equilibrium solution is given for the m-th cumulant cost optimization using the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations. In addition, the sufficient condition which is the verification theorem for the existence of Nash equilibrium solution is given for the m-th cumulant cost optimization using the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations. However, solving the HJB equations even for relatively low dimensional game problem is not trivial, we propose to use neural network approximate method to find the solution of the HJB partial differential equations for the statistical game problem. Convergence proof of the neural network approximate method solution to exact solution is given. In addition, numerical examples are provided for the statistical game to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed theoretical developments.<br>Temple University--Theses

Between 2008 and 2013, we searched for such planets with the MEarth Project, a photometric survey of the closest and smallest main-sequence stars. <p>In this project we illustrate how queueing simulation may be used to find the optimal interval for checkpointing problems and compare results with theoretical computations for simple systems that may be treated analytically.</p><p>We consider a relatively simple model for an internet banking facility. From time to time, the application server breaks down. The information at the time of the breakdown has to be passed onto the back up server before service may be resumed. To make the change over as efficient as possible, information of the state of user’s accounts is saved at regular intervals. This is known as checkpointing.</p><p>Firstly, we use GPSS (a queueing simulation tool) to find, by simulation, an optimal checkpointing interval, which maximises the efficiency of the server. Two measures of efficiency are considered; the availability of the server and the average time a customer spends in the system. Secondly, we investigate how far the queueing theory can go to providing an analytic solution to the problem and see whether or not this is in line with the results obtained through simulation.</p><p>The analysis shows that checkpointing is not necessary if breakdowns occur frequently and log reading after failure does not take much time. Otherwise, checkpointing is necessary and the analysis shows how GPSS may be used to obtain the optimal checkpointing interval. Relatively complicated systems may be simulated, where there are no analytic tools available. In simple cases, where theoretical methods may be used, the results from our simulations correspond with the theoretical calculations.</p>

Le thème de nos travaux porte sur la statistique des processus à longue mémoire, pour lesquels nous proposons et validons des outils statistiques issus de l'analyse par ondelettes. Ces dernières années ces méthodes pour estimer le paramètre de mémoire sont devenues très populaires. Cependant, les résultats théoriques validant rigoureusement les estimateurs pour les modèles semi paramétriques classiques à longue mémoire sont récents (cf. Les articles de E. Moulines, F. Roueff et M. Taqqu depuis 2007). Les résultats que nous proposons dans cette thèse s'inscrivent directement dans le prolongement de ces travaux. Nous avons proposé une procédure de test pour détecter des ruptures sur la densité spectrale généralisée. Dans le domaine des ondelettes, le test devient un test de ruptures sur la variance des coefficients d'ondelettes. Nous avons ensuite développé un algorithme de calcul rapide de la matrice de covariance des coefficients d'ondelettes. Deux applications de cet algorithme sont proposées , d'une part pour l'estimation de d et d'autre part pour améliorer le test proposé dans le chapitre précédent. Pour finir, nous avons étudié les estimateurs robustes robustes du paramètre de mémoire d dans le domaine des ondelettes. La contribution majeure de ce chapitre est le théorème central limite obtenu pour les trois estimateurs de d dans le cadre des processus gaussiens M(d)<br>The theme of our work focuses on statistical process long memory, for which we propose and validate tools statistics from the wavelet analysis. In recent years these methods for estimating the memory setting became very popular. However, rigorously validating the theoretical results estimators for semiparametric models classic long memory are new (cf. The articles by E. Moulines, F. Roueff and M. Taqqu since 2007). The results we propose in this thesis are a direct extension of this work. We have proposed a test procedure for detecting changes on the generalized spectral density. In the wavelet domain, the test becomes a test of change in the variance of wavelet coefficients. We then developed an algorithm for fast computation of covariance matrix of wavelet coefficients. Two applications of this algorithm are proposed, first to estimate d and the other part to improve the test proposed in the previous chapter. Finally, we studied the robust estimators of the memory parameter in the wavelet domain, based on three estimators of the variance of wavelet coefficients at scale. The major contribution of this chapter is the central limit theorem obtained for three estimators in the context of Gaussian processes M (d)

El tema d'aquesta tesi és l'enumeració de permutacions amb subseqüències prohibides respecte a certs estadístics, i l'enumeració de permutacions que eviten subseqüències generalitzades.<br/>Després d'introduir algunes definicions sobre subseqüències i estadístics en permutacions i camins de Dyck, comencem estudiant la distribució dels estadístics -nombre de punts fixos' i -nombre d'excedències' en permutacions que eviten una subseqüència de longitud 3. Un dels resultats principals és que la distribució conjunta d'aquest parell de paràmetres és la mateixa en permutacions que eviten 321 que en permutacions que eviten 132. Això generalitza un teorema recent de Robertson, Saracino i Zeilberger. Demostrem aquest resultat donant una bijecció que preserva els dos estadístics en qüestió i un altre paràmetre. La idea clau consisteix en introduir una nova classe d'estadístics en camins de Dyck, basada en el que anomenem túnel.<br/>A continuació considerem el mateix parell d'estadístics en permutacions que eviten simultàniament dues o més subseqüències de longitud 3. Resolem tots els casos donant les funcions generadores corresponents. Alguns casos són generalitzats a subseqüències de longitud arbitrària. També descrivim la distribució d'aquests paràmetres en involucions que eviten qualsevol subconjunt de subseqüències de longitud 3. La tècnica principal consisteix en fer servir bijeccions entre permutacions amb subseqüències prohibides i certs tipus de camins de Dyck, de manera que els estadístics en permutacions que considerem corresponen a estadístics en camins de Dyck que són més fàcils d'enumerar.<br/>Tot seguit presentem una nova família de bijeccions del conjunt de camins de Dyck a sí mateix, que envien estadístics que apareixen en l'estudi de permutacions amb subseqüències prohibides a estadístics clàssics en camins de Dyck, la distribució dels quals s'obté fàcilment. En particular, això ens dóna una prova bijectiva senzilla de l'equidistribució de punts fixos en les permutacions que eviten 321 i en les que eviten 132. A continuació donem noves interpretacions dels nombres de Catalan i dels nombres de Fine. Considerem una classe de permutacions definida en termes d'aparellaments de 2n punts en una circumferència sense creuaments. N'estudiem l'estructura i algunes propietats, i donem la distribució de diversos estadístics en aquests permutacions.<br/>En la següent part de la tesi introduïm una noció diferent de subseqüències prohibides, amb el requeriment que els elements que formen la subseqüència han d'aparèixer en posicions consecutives a la permutació. Més en general, estudiem la distribució del nombre d'ocurrències de subparaules (subseqüències consecutives) en permutacions. Resolem el problema en diversos casos segons la forma de la subparaula, obtenint-ne les funcions generadores exponencials bivariades corresponents com a solucions de certes equacions diferencials lineals. El mètode està basat en la representació de permutacions com a arbres binaris creixents i en mètodes simbòlics.<br/>La part final tracta de subseqüències generalitzades, que extenen tant la noció de subseqüències clàssiques com la de subparaules. Per algunes subseqüències obtenim nous resultats enumeratius. Finalment estudiem el comportament assimptòtic del nombre de permutacions de mida n que eviten una subseqüència generalitzada fixa quan n tendeix a infinit. També donem fites inferiors i superiors en el nombre de permutacions que eviten certes subseqüències.

Randomized controlled trials are experiments for the evaluation of a new treatment option, currently representing the "gold standard" in health care assessment. Clinical trials fulfill a double role of evidence production and of regulatory oversight in sanctioning new drugs' approval into the drug market. For this reason trials are large and tightly regulated enterprises that have to comply with ethical requirements while at the same time maintaining high epistemic standards, in a balance that becomes increasingly difficult to strike as research questions become more and more sophisticated. The statistical framework adopted for designing and analysing trials represents a relevant part of this architecture. Statististical methodology influences such aspects as which inferences are licensed on the basis of data and what is the degree of support granted to an hypothesis. Thus, statistics plays a fundamental role as a gatekeeper both in warranting the ethical permissibility of a trial, and in licensing conclusions about the most effective treatment. Certain widely-accepted statistical principles have an impact on the way results from medical studies are evaluated. One such principle is conditioning, i.e. the possibility to incorporate an assessment of strength of evidence in inferential statements of confidence. Currently, conditioning is not part of the statistical method in use, although it is upheld by alternative statistical paradigms such as the Bayesian. In my thesis I analyze the impact of conditioning upon the ethical, epistemic and regulatory facets of trials and I suggest the possibility of incorporating conditioning within the current statistical paradigm of clinical research.

This paper presents interactive learning objects for statistics education that are tailor-made for smartphones but operate as well on any other technical platform. The objects are self- contained and accessible as free educational resources, joined together to a web app. The introductory part of this paper briefly describes the current state of employment of mobile devices for learning and teaching purposes (m-learning). The ensuing part is dedicated to a new approach for m-learning in statistics education that puts heavy emphasis on interactive visualization. The visualization refers to statistical methods and concepts used in descriptive and inferential statistics and to selected data sets stemming from official data providers. The closing part contains an overview on experiences made so far and a few concluding remarks.

College-level students pursuing majors that don’t require a quantitative course still need a statistical literacy course that helps them develop the skills to evaluate arguments that use statistics as evidence. Such a course should entail utility in everyday use such that statistical literacy results in a lasting appreciation of the value of statistics as needed in everyday life, civic life, and professional life as a data consumer. A course designed to promote statistical literasy should help students understand and analyze various influences on the size and direction of a statistical association and should include key topics in conditional probability, confounding, and the vulnerability of statistical significance to confounding. This paper describes some new ways of presenting these ideas that are based on the results of field trials conducted in connection with the W. M. Keck Statistical Literacy project at Augsburg College. After studying statistical literacy, 43 percent of Augsburg students strongly agreed that the course helped them develop critical thinking skills and 18 percent strongly agreed that successful completion of the course should become requirement for graduation.

The right to a name and nationality is not only one of the most fundamental human rights but also a requirement to access to basic and essential services such as health and education. This right is exercised through an effective and universal civil registration. It also allows for reliable vital statistics and higher levels of transparency and efficacy that provides the foundation for inclusive public policies, especially social programs. Thus civil registry, legal identity and identity management (Id-M) are central elements for social and economic development. On the international stage, the creation and dissemination of knowledge around the civil registration and legal identity field has evolved from a single paper produced by UNICEF in 2000, to several knowledge sharing initiatives where the IDB has played a pivotal role. The launching of a webpage (http://iadb.libguides.com/registros) in 2011 that provides access to all IDB publications and projects on the topic is just one example of it. Birth under-registration rates has dropped from 18 percent to 9 percent in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) since the IDB, through its legal identity and registry team took on the topic in 2002 . Though the Bank cannot claim the exclusive credit for this achievement, the fact that a development bank took on the issue is of major consequence.

In the article on the material of the Salzburg weekly «New Days» (1945–1947) various spheres of activity of Peter Volyniak are presented. It is noted that this edition was a business card of the publishing house of the same name and had a history of continuation: in Toronto Petro Volyniak restored the publishing house of the same name and continued the publication in the format of the universal monthly «New Days» (1950–1969). The article also presents periodicals («Latest News», «New Days», «Timpani», «Our Way») and literary, artistic and scientific collection «Steering Wheel», which were published in the Salzburg publishing house of Peter Volyniak «New Days». The purpose of the publication is to trace the path of Petro Volyniak from a writer to a literary critic, journalist and publisher. This trend is reproduced in chronological order. Peter Volyniak as a writer is informed in the article «Literary Evening of P. Volyniak» (author – M. Ch-ka). O. Satsyuk’s literary-critical article is devoted to the coverage of ideological and artistic aspects of Petro Volyniak’s collection «The Earth Calls» (Salzburg, 1947). Petro Volyniak as a literary critic is presented in an article devoted to a collection of literary tales by A. Kolomiyets (Salzburg, 1946), which was published by «New Days». Petro Volyniak as a journalist presents the essay «This is our song…». With the help of content analysis it was observed that the text is divided into two parts: the first contains the author’s reflections on the Ukrainian song, its role in the life of the Ukrainian people; in the second, main, Peter Okopny’s activity abroad is presented. The publisher Petro Volyniak in 1947 in a separate publication of the February issue of the weekly summarizes the third year of activity, providing statistics on the publication of periodicals, books, postcards, calendars, various small format materials. The analyzed material demonstrated the experience of combining creative work and commercial activity.

The main objectives of this study are to investigate the trends in primary pavement materials’ unit price over time and to develop statistical models and guidelines for using predictive unit prices of pavement materials instead of uniform unit prices in life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) for future maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) projects. Various socio-economic data were collected for the past 20 years (1997–2018) in California, including oil price, population, government expenditure in transportation, vehicle registration, and other key variables, in order to identify factors affecting pavement materials’ unit price. Additionally, the unit price records of the popular pavement materials were categorized by project size (small, medium, large, and extra-large). The critical variables were chosen after identifying their correlations, and the future values of each variable were predicted through time-series analysis. Multiple regression models using selected socio-economic variables were developed to predict the future values of pavement materials’ unit price. A case study was used to compare the results between the uniform unit prices in the current LCCA procedures and the unit prices predicted in this study. In LCCA, long-term prediction involves uncertainties due to unexpected economic trends and industrial demand and supply conditions. Economic recessions and a global pandemic are examples of unexpected events which can have a significant influence on variations in material unit prices and project costs. Nevertheless, the data-driven scientific approach as described in this research reduces risk caused by such uncertainties and enables reasonable predictions for the future. The statistical models developed to predict the future unit prices of the pavement materials through this research can be implemented to enhance the current LCCA procedure and predict more realistic unit prices and project costs for the future M&R activities, thus promoting the most cost-effective alternative in LCCA.

Relevant geospatial data layers are required for developing next generation ecological response models for specific reaches of 5 rivers in Central Texas: Colorado, Concho, San Saba, Llano, and Pedernales Rivers. Therefore, a collaborative effort between Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Texas State University, and Texas A&M University was undertaken to acquire and curate a collection of biological and physical datasets to be utilized as inputs for next generation ecological response models at various spatial scales (watershed, river buffer, and point). The objective was to aggregate and process GIS and remote sensing data layers using advanced geospatial analytics to generate relevant metrics (e.g., landcover, elevation, soil erodibility). Next, subsets of the priority datasets were extracted based on two spatial units of interest (local buffer and watershed). The priorities include (1) Percent land use and land cover information from National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) land use/land cover class types (forest, cultivated land, open water, etc.) and soil composition (%); LU change, (2) Geomorphology for each sampling point, (3) Physiographic information on each sampling point, and (4) Linear stream distance between sampling points (5 Secondary) Distance/network analyses. This work was funded through ERDC’s Next Generation Ecological Modeling Program under the work unit titled, “Remote Sensing and statistical support for multi-scale field-based data collection”.

The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.

In 2009, the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network initiated bird surveys on Effigy Mounds National Monument to monitor changes in bird community composition and abundance and improve our understanding of relationships between breeding birds and their habitat and the effects of management actions on those relationships. This information helps park staff plan management objectives and assess the effectiveness of management alternatives. We evaluated park breeding bird trends in the context of trends observed within the North American Bird Conservation Initiative?s Prairie Hardwood Transition Bird Conservation Region where the park is located. This allows us to assess the influence of park habitat management on bird populations with an understanding of regional population trends that are outside the influence of natural resource management activities at the park. In 14 years (2009?2022) of monitoring, 111 bird species have been recorded on the park, 93 of which are considered breeding species (permanent or summer residents). Eight of these are species of concern for the Prairie Hardwood Transition Bird Conservation Region. Thirty-eight species were observed in sufficient numbers to calculate annual abundances and trends with some degree of statistical confidence. The American Redstart, American Robin, Baltimore Oriole, Eastern Wood-pewee, and Red-eyed Vireo were the most abundant and widespread species on the park. Regional trends (2009?2019; Sauer et al. 2020) were similar to those seen on the park with a few exceptions. American Robin, Brown-headed Cowbird, Common Grackle, and White-breasted Nuthatch were declining within the region but increasing within the park. Diversity, richness, and evenness in distribution of individuals across species in the breeding bird community on the park were unchanged over the 14 years. When sampled, habitats on the plots at Effigy Mounds National Monument consisted primarily of the woodland type, with lesser amounts of other types present. Canopy cover averaged 61 to 89% on plots with cover provided exclusively by hard?wood trees. Basal area of hardwood trees averaged between 12 and 22 m2/ha, and canopy height averaged between 20 and 23 m. Tree species from 14 different families contrib?uted to the canopy cover and basal area of plots. Plots were primarily unvegetated at ground level, with deciduous litter and woody debris common and bare soil exposed. Total foliar cover at ground level on plots consisted primarily of forbs.
