Sandwich structures are often used as protective structures on ships. To further improve the energy-absorbing characteristics of traditional honeycomb sandwich structures, an energy-absorbing mechanism is proposed based on the gradient folding deformation of lotus root nodes and a leafy stem vein homogenizing load mechanism. A honeycomb sandwich structure is then designed that combines lotus root nodes and leafy stem veins. Four types of peak-nest structures, traditional cellular structure (TCS), lotus root honeycomb structure (LRHS), leaf vein honeycomb structure (LVHS), and lotus root vein combined honeycomb structure (LRVHS), were prepared using 3D printing technology. The deformation modes and energy absorption characteristics of the four honeycomb structures under quasistatic action were investigated using a combination of experimental and simulation methods. It was found that the coupling design improved the energy absorption in the structural platform region of the LRHS by 51.4% compared to that of the TCS due to its mechanical mechanism of helical twisting and deformation. The leaf vein design was found to enhance the peak stress of the structure, resulting in a 4.84% increase in the peak stress of the LVHS compared to that of the TCS. The effects of the number, thickness, and position of the leaf vein plates on the honeycomb structure were further explored. The greatest structural SEA effect of 1.28 J/g was observed when the number of leaf vein plates was four. The highest SEA of 1.36 J/g was achieved with a leaf vein plate thickness of 0.6 mm, representing a 7.3% improvement compared to that of the 0.2 mm thickness. These findings may provide valuable insights into the design of lightweight honeycomb sandwich structures with high specific energy absorption.

A series of layered rare-earth hydroxides (LRHs) of (Y,Ln)2(OH)5NO3•nH2O ( Ln=Tb,Eu), have been synthesized via a hydrothermal route. Crystal structures and optical properties of the materials have been investigated in detail by the combined techniques of XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and PLE/PL spectroscopies. It is shown that Tb3+ and Eu3+ are successfully incorporated into the Y-LRH host lattice to form solid solutions. Under UV excitation, the binary (Y0.97Tb0.03)- and (Y0.97Eu0.03)-LRHs exhibit their respective characteristic photoluminescence of the Eu3+ and Tb3+ activators. The ternary (Y0.965Eu0.005Tb0.03)-LRH simultaneously shows red and green emissions and both the intensity and emission color can be adjusted by changing the excitation wavelength. Compared with (Y0.995Eu0.005)-LRH, the ternary (Y0.965Eu0.005Tb0.03)-LRH exhibits appreciably enhanced 615nm red-emission, which indicates the existence of non- radiative energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+. The ternary (Y0.965Eu0.005Tb0.03)-LRH also readily undergoes anion exchange with a series of inorganic and organic anions at room temperature.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to compare the mission statements of the hospitals listed on the 2014 US News & World Report’s Best Hospitals List to investigate the research question, “Are high ranking hospitals (HRH) more likely than low ranking hospitals (LRH) to address cultural diversity in strategic statements?” Design/methodology/approach The strategic statements of 44 HRH and 56 LRH were compared using chi-square and Fisher’s exact test. Findings While the data do not support the notion that HRHs are more likely than LRHs to address diversity in strategic statements, HRHs are more likely than LRHs to actually devote resources to address the issues of cultural diversity. Research limitations/implications The current research is limited to a sample taken from the US News & World Report Best Hospitals. This is not a definitive list, and a multitude of third-party hospital raters exist – each with its own unique metrics. Practical implications The results do not show a relationship between a hospital’s mission statement and its ranking in the US News List of Best Hospitals. However, the findings suggest that hospitals that maintain a dedicated diversity manager/office do tend to be higher ranked. Originality/value This is the first known investigation of the relationship between the inclusion of diversity in hospital mission statements and hospital rankings. The research suggests that addressing diversity in strategic statements is simply not enough and that dedicated, ground-level resources are necessary to properly impact quality care and third-party ratings.

6545 Background: While USPSTF and ACP have determined that Sc for CRC is beneficial, the practice of Sc and its benefits are not established in LRHS caring for the uninsured. We tested the hypothesis that Sc could result in a reduction in the therapy (Tx) costs for CRC and offset Sc costs. Methods: Using a Markov model we performed individual level microsimulations (ILMS) of 100,000 subjects ≥ 50 years with average risk of CRC. Five Sc strategies (ST) were tested: Fecal occult blood (FOBT) and fecal immune chemical (FIT) annually and biannually (FOBT2, FIT2), and colonoscopy (CS) every 10 years. No Sc was used as referent ST (Ref). Compliance with Sc was assumed at 16% for FOBT and FIT and 56% for CS. Sc was offered to 100, 50 and 25% of the subjects in 3 separate ILMS. Life Years Gained (LYG) and Incremental Cost Effectiveness Ratios (ICER) were calculated. Costs and LYG discounted at 3%. Results: Mean follow up: 12.6 years. At all coverage levels all STs resulted in decreased CRC costs by 9-17% and deaths by 14-41%. CS decreases CRC incidence by 5-26%. At higher coverage rates, CS remains the best ST, but at 25% and lower coverage FOBT and FIT function better. Conclusions: These data support systematic use of Sc for CRC in LRHS. Until resources for CS are available, lives and costs could be saved by simple measures such as FOBT and FIT and enrolling as few as 4,552 subjects. [Table: see text]

Basalt was used as an ornamental stone in any historic and ancient cities in Jordan. Measuring the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the tangent Young’s modulus (Et) in the laboratory requires premium quality specimens with special core dimensions. This research focuses on correlations both UCS and Et with Leeb Rebound Hardness Test (LRH). In the laboratory, UCS, Et, and LRH were performed on 90 core samples extracted from 30 different rock boulders collected from the neighboring area of Umm al-Jimal, a historic city in northeastern Jordan. A strong power correlation with (R2 = 0.888, RMSE = 5.464) was found between non-destructive LRH value and UCS. On the other hand, a moderately strong linear regression with (R2 = 0.792, RMSE = 4.661) was found between Et and LRH. In conclusion, non-destructive LRHs can be used as indictors for evaluating both UCS and Et during the restoration of the historic city Umm al-Jimal and the rehabilitation of other existing structures.

Two dimensional nanophosphors of high quality play an important role in the miniaturization and intelligentization of opto-electronic components. In this present work, ultra-large (30μm) single crystals of (Y0.95Eu0.05)2(OH)5NO3·nH2O layered rare earth hydroxide (LRH) with a hexagonal shape have been synthisized via autoclaving the rare-earth nitrate/NH4OH reaction system in the presence of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). The nitrate ions, existing in the interlayer gallery of layered rare earth hydroxide, exhibit facile exchanges with oleate anions by hydrothermal anion exchange. Furthermore, the interlayer distance can thus be expanded from ~0.9 nm for the pristine LRHs to ~3.60 nm for the intercalated ones, which are then efficiently delaminated into unilamellar nanosheets with a lateral size of 10μm and a thickness of ~1.50 nm. The obtained nanosheets are single crystaline. Highly [11 oriented, dense (Y0.95Eu0.05)2O3 phosphor films with excellent optical transparency and a greatly enhanced luminescence intensity have been constructed via self-assembly of ultra-large unilamellar LRH nanosheets, followed by proper annealing.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) offers a cost-effective and accurate method for inputting, updating, and analyzing spatial data. However, many data-storage and reporting methods at state departments of transportation and other transportation agencies rely on linear referencing methods (LRMs) for managing transportation data. Consequently, GPS data must be able to coexist with linear referencing systems (LRSs). Unfortunately, the two systems are fundamentally different in the way they collect, integrate, and manipulate data. For spatial data collected with GPS to be integrated into an LRS or shared among LRMs, several issues must be addressed. Various issues are discussed for integrating point features from a typical inventory system with an LRM or between LRMs, including two- or three-dimensional GPS to one-dimensional LRM, linear offset error, lateral offset error, matching to the wrong segment, and locating points between LRMs.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic major hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Summary of background data Despite the popularity of laparoscopic hepatectomy, it is still in need of further evidence to assess its safety and efficacy for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods From 2008 to 2017, 149 patients (laparoscopic right hepatectomy [LRH], 28 patients; open right hepatectomy [ORH], 121 patients) were included. Baseline characteristics, including tumor characteristics, perioperative outcomes, and survival outcomes, were compared between the 2 groups. For group comparisons, one-to-one propensity score matching was used to minimize selection biases. Results After one-to-one propensity score matching, 25 LRHs were compared to 25 ORHs. Operative time was significantly shorter for the ORH group than for the LRH group (mean, 322.5 versus 379.5 minutes; P = 0.015), whereas the LRH group showed less intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.02) and lower intraoperative transfusion (P = 0.02). Postoperative hospital stays were significantly shorter for the LRH group (mean, 14.5 days versus 20.2 days; P = 0.004). Overall morbidities were significantly lower in the LRH group (1:13, P = 0.00). The cumulative 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates were 100%, 92.0%, and 92.0%, respectively, for the LRH group, and 84.0%, 80.0%, and 64.0%, respectively, for the ORH group. Furthermore, the cumulative 1-, 3-, and 5-year disease-free survival rates were 96.0%, 80.0%, and 75.3%, respectively, for the LRH group, and 72.0%, 48.0%, and 40.0%, respectively, for the ORH group. The LRH group showed significantly longer disease-free survival (P = 0.009) and overall survival (P = 0.028) than the ORH group. Conclusion LRH can be safely performed for hepatocellular carcinoma. LRH was associated with more favorable oncologic outcomes.

In total, 93 market actors were involved in the study, in which 80 persons were purposively selected from Local Resource Person (LRP) and Local Resource Group (LRG) members and 13 persons were randomly selected from the local, district and national level traders. Primary data on agroforestry products was collected through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools following several field visits. Fourteen agroforestry products in Lamjung and 20 agroforestry products in Kavrepalanchok district were selected for analysis. The findings showed that small-scale production and insufficient service to farmers from the village level agriculture collection centers and cooperatives are the major constraints to effective and efficient market chain development and management. The main factors responsible for increasing the production of agroforestry products are the rise in awareness among LRPs/ LRGs about agroforestry practices along with institutional and policy development to facilitate the marketing of agroforestry products. The paper concludes by highlighting the controlling factors in agroforestry business. Banko JanakariA Journal of Forestry Information for NepalVol. 27, No. 2, 2017, page: 32-45

The wait times for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) listed for liver transplant are longer than ever, which has led to an increased reliance on the use of pre-operative LRTs. The impact that multiple rounds of LRTs have on peri-operative outcomes following transplant is unknown. This was a retrospective single center analysis of 298 consecutive patients with HCC who underwent liver transplant (January 2017 to May 2021). The data was obtained from two institution-specific databases and the TransQIP database. Of the 298 patients, 27 (9.1%) underwent no LRTs, 156 (52.4%) underwent 1-2 LRTs, and 115 (38.6%) underwent ≥3 LRTs prior to LT. The patients with ≥3 LRTs had a significantly higher rate of bile leak compared to patients who received 1-2 LRTs (7.0 vs. 1.3%, p = 0.014). Unadjusted and adjusted regression analyses demonstrated a significant association between the total number of LRTs administered and bile leak, but not rates of overall biliary complications. The total number of LRTs was not significantly associated with any other peri-operative or post-operative outcome measure. These findings support the aggressive use of LRTs to control HCC in patients awaiting liver transplant, with further evaluation needed to confirm the biliary leak findings.

Introduction: Correcting astigmatism during cataract surgery to achieve optimal visual outcomes is important. Various techniques, such as limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs), are used to correct astigmatism. LRIs are effective for mild to moderate astigmatism but have limitations in correcting larger astigmatism. This study aimed to review the effectiveness of single and dual LRI in correcting astigmatism during cataract surgery. Methods: This literature review utilized databases from 2010 until 2022. The keywords “corneal astigmatism”, “limbal relaxing incision”, and “cataract surgery” were used to collect 12 journals that had relevant topics. Results: LRIs are a form of partial-thickness keratotomy used to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. The incisions for LRIs are made in the peripheral cornea, following a nomogram based on the patient's astigmatism, age, and the location of the steep axis of astigmatism. LRIs can be performed as single or dual incisions, with dual LRIs offering greater astigmatism correction. In the case of irregular astigmatism, LRIs can be adjusted to the topography of the cornea because the lengths of coupled incisions can vary. Conclusion: The effectiveness between single and dual LRIs was the same, but paired LRIs have a superior effect in correcting greater astigmatism. LRIs remain a valuable tool for cataract surgeons to manage astigmatism and improve visual outcomes in cataract surgery patients.

AbstractMassive luminous red galaxies (LRGs) are believed to be evolving passively and can be used as cosmic chronometers to estimate the Hubble constant (the differential age method). However, different LRGs may be located in different environments. We investigate the environmental and mass dependence of the formation of ‘quiescent’ LRGs by using the population synthesis software STARLIGHT. We derive the stellar populations in each LRG, and obtain the mean age distribution and the mean star formation history (SFH) of those LRGs. We find that there is no apparent dependence of the mean age and the SFH of quiescent LRGs on their environment, while the ages of these quiescent LRGs depend weakly on their mass. We also evaluate the possible uncertainties in estimating the Hubble constant by the differential age method when using LRGs as cosmic chronometers.

118 Background: To determine the influence of radiotherapy (XRT) technique on local control in breast cancer (BRCA) patients, we evaluated the relationship between PET/CT-identified locoregional recurrences (LRR) and prior definitive XRT treatment plans. Methods: Twenty-two consecutive LRRs of BRCA were identified by PET/CT in 19 patients treated from 2004-2011 with definitive post-operative radiation for their BRCA. PET/CT and original XRT CT simulation images were fused using a B-spline deformable registration algorithm (VelocityAI, Velocity Medical Solutions, Atlanta, GA) to correct for posture and soft tissue changes. Prior XRT dose to the FDG avid LRR region was calculated. LRR was classified as in-field, marginal or out-of-field. In-field LRRs were defined as ≥95% of the LRR volume receiving ≥95% of the prescribed dose (45–50.4 Gy). Marginal misses were LRRs at the field edge and/or not receiving ≥95% of the prescribed dose. Out-of-field LRRs were LRRs intentionally not treated with the original XRT plan. Results: Four LRRs were in-field, 8 were marginal and 10 were out-of-field, with two patients having both in-field and out-of-field LRRs and one having a marginal and out-of-field LRRs. Three in-field, 3 marginal and 6 out-of-field LRRs occurred simultaneously with distant metastasis (DM). In-field LRRs received a median dose of 48.4Gy (range 45-50Gy). Two in-field LRRs were marginal misses of the additional 15 Gy boost dose (median dose received 53.5 Gy); both patients had high grade, ER/PR-, and HER2 + tumors. In the 7 patients with triple negative tumors, there were 4 marginal, 4 out-of-field, and no in-field LRRs. Among marginal LRRs, a median dose of 33Gy (range 2–45.6Gy) was delivered. Out-of-field LRRs occurred in 5 supraclavicular and 5 internal mammary lymph nodes. With a median follow-up period of 3.7 yrs, the 5-yr disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with an isolated LRR is 55.6%, while in those recurring with DM, the DFS is 22.5%. Conclusions: Our study is one of the first to systematically evaluate the influence of XRT technique over local control in BRCA. Due to the number of marginal and out-of-field LRRs, our data suggest that XRT field design and dose are important factors in preventing LRRs in addition to tumor biology.

Abstract We present the clustering analysis of photometric luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at a redshift range of 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 1.05 using 615,317 photometric LRGs selected from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program, covering ∼124 deg2. Our sample covers a broad range of stellar masses and photometric redshifts and enables a halo occupation distribution analysis to study the redshift and stellar-mass dependence of dark halo properties of LRGs. We find a tight correlation between the characteristic dark halo mass to host central LRGs, M min , and the number density of LRGs, independently of redshifts, indicating that the formation of LRGs is associated with the global environment. The M min of LRGs depends only weakly on the stellar mass M ⋆ at M ⋆ ≲ 1010.75 h −2 M ⊙ at 0.3 < z < 1.05, in contrast to the case for all photometrically selected galaxies, for which M min shows significant dependence on M ⋆ even at low M ⋆. The weak stellar-mass dependence is indicative of the dark halo mass being the key parameter for the formation of LRGs, rather than the stellar mass. Our result suggests that the halo mass of ∼1012.5±0.2 h −1 M ⊙ is the critical mass for an efficient halo quenching due to the halo environment. We compare our result with the result of the hydrodynamical simulation to find that low-mass LRGs at z ∼ 1 will increase their stellar masses by an order of magnitude from z = 1 to 0 through mergers and satellite accretions, and that a large fraction of massive LRGs at z < 0.9 consist of LRGs that recently migrated from massive green valley galaxies or those that evolved from less massive LRGs through mergers and satellite accretions.

This classroom-based longitudinal study examines the language-related episodes (LREs) engendered by pedagogical translation tasks and monolingual tasks. Specifically, the study investigated the discourse features and discussion patterns of LREs yielded in discussions of the two different types of tasks in L2 classrooms. The present study was conducted in an authentic class environment and consisted of two experiments. One group participated in class discussions after being assigned L1-L2 translation tasks, while the other took part in class discussions after working on L2 writing tasks. The LREs elicited in the two group’s class discussions over ten sessions of class discussions were scrutinized. Inductive thematic analysis shows that LREs produced in the concerned experimental tasks included ‘concern-based LREs’ and six different types of ‘response-based LREs’. Striking difference was observed in LRE patterns produced by the translation group and the writing group. The findings revealed that pedagogical translation tasks engendered LREs with deeper level of engagement and more enduring discussions than L2 monolingual tasks. The concern-based and response-based LREs arisen in this study contributes to a new framework for LRE categorization.

ABSTRACT The gram-negative insect pathogen Xenorhabdus nematophila possesses potential virulence factors including an assortment of toxins, degradative enzymes, and regulators of these compounds. Here, we describe the lysR-like homolog A (lrhA) gene, a gene required by X. nematophila for full virulence in Manduca sexta insects. In several other gram-negative bacteria, LrhA homologs are transcriptional regulators involved in the expression (typically repression) of virulence factors. Based on phenotypic and genetic evidence, we report that X. nematophila LrhA has a positive effect on transcription and expression of certain potential virulence factors, including a toxin subunit-encoding gene, xptD1. Furthermore, an lrhA mutant lacks in vitro lipase activity and has reduced swimming motility compared to its wild-type parent. Quantitative PCR revealed that transcript levels of flagellar genes, a lipase gene, and xptD1 were significantly lower in the lrhA mutant than in the wild type. In addition, lrhA itself is positively regulated by the global regulator Lrp. This work establishes a role for LrhA as a vital component of a regulatory hierarchy necessary for X. nematophila pathogenesis and expression of surface-localized and secreted factors. Future research is aimed at identifying and characterizing virulence factors within the LrhA regulon.

In the context of robot navigation, game AI, and so on, real-time search is extensively used to undertake motion planning. Though it satisfies the requirement of quick response to users’ commands and environmental changes, learning real-time search (LRTS) suffers from the heuristic depressions where agents behave irrationally. There have introduced several effective solutions, such as state abstractions. This paper combines LRTS and encoded quad-tree abstraction which represent the search space in multiresolutions. When exploring the environments, agents are enabled to locally repair the quad-tree models and incrementally refine the spatial cognition. By virtue of the idea of state aggregation and heuristic generalization, our EQ LRTS (encoded quad-tree based LRTS) possesses the ability of quickly escaping from heuristic depressions with less state revisitations. Experiments and analysis show that (a) our encoding principle for quad-trees is a much more memory-efficient method than other data structures expressing quad-trees, (b) EQ LRTS differs a lot in several characteristics from classical PR LRTS which represent the space and refine the paths hierarchically, and (c) EQ LRTS substantially reduces the planning amount and curtails heuristic updates compared with LRTS on uniform cells.

This research aimed to explore the interaction between lotus root polysaccharides (LRPs) and phenolic compounds, and to study the effects of phenolic binding on the structural and functional properties of LRPs. The influences of pH, temperature, and NaCl and phenol concentration on the binding ratio of gallic acid (GA)/epigallocatechin (EGC) to LRPs were evaluated. LRP-GA/EGC complexes with different phenolic binding amounts were then prepared and characterized via ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and average molecular weight (MW) measurements. The results suggest that hydrogen bonds contributed to the binding of GA/EGC and LRPs. The phenolic binding led to significant changes in the structure and MW of LRPs. Moreover, antioxidant activity and the macrophage-stimulating effect of LRPs were improved after binding with GA/EGC, depending on the binding amount and type of polyphenol. Interestingly, LRP-GA/EGC complexes with polyphenol binding amounts of 105.4 mg/g and 50.71 mg/g, respectively, showed better stimulation effects on the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL10 secretion of macrophages when compared to LRPs. These results show the great potential of phenolic binding to be applied to improve the structure and functional activity of LRPs.

The mammalian nuclear hormone receptors LRH1 (NR5A2) and SF1 (NR5A1) are close paralogs that can bind the same DNA motif and play crucial roles in gonadal development and function. Lrh1 is essential for follicle development in the ovary and has been proposed to regulate steroidogenesis in the testis. Lrh1 expression in the testis is highly elevated by loss of the sex regulator Dmrt1, which triggers male-to-female transdifferentiation of Sertoli cells. While Sf1 has a well-defined and crucial role in testis development, no function for Lrh1 in the male gonad has been reported. Here we use conditional genetics to examine Lrh1 requirements both in gonadal cell fate reprogramming and in normal development of the three major cell lineages of the mouse testis. We find that loss of Lrh1 suppresses sexual transdifferentiation, confirming that Lrh1 can act as a key driver in reprogramming sexual cell fate. In otherwise wild-type testes, we find that Lrh1 is dispensable in Leydig cells but is required in Sertoli cells for their proliferation, for seminiferous tubule morphogenesis, for maintenance of the blood-testis barrier, for feedback regulation of androgen production, and for support of spermatogenesis. Expression profiling identified misexpressed genes likely underlying most aspects of the Sertoli cell phenotype. In the germ line we found that Lrh1 is required for maintenance of functional spermatogonia, and hence mutants progressively lose spermatogenesis. Reduced expression of the RNA binding factor Nxf2 likely contributes to the SSC defect. Unexpectedly, however, over time the Lrh1 mutant germ line recovered abundant spermatogenesis and fertility. This finding indicates that severe germ line depletion triggers a response allowing mutant spermatogonia to recover the ability to undergo complete spermatogenesis. Our results demonstrate that Lrh1, like Sf1, is an essential regulator of testis development and function but has a very distinct repertoire of functions.

Type 1 fimbriae of Escherichia coli facilitate attachment to the host mucosa and promote biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces. The transcriptional regulator LrhA, which is known as a repressor of flagellar, motility and chemotaxis genes, regulates biofilm formation and expression of type 1 fimbriae. Whole-genome expression profiling revealed that inactivation of lrhA results in an increased expression of structural components of type 1 fimbriae. In vitro, LrhA bound to the promoter regions of the two fim recombinases (FimB and FimE) that catalyse the inversion of the fimA promoter, and to the invertible element itself. Translational lacZ fusions with these genes and quantification of fimE transcript levels by real-time PCR showed that LrhA influences type 1 fimbrial phase variation, primarily via activation of FimE, which is required for the ON-to-OFF transition of the fim switch. Enhanced type 1 fimbrial expression as a result of lrhA disruption was confirmed by mannose-sensitive agglutination of yeast cells. Biofilm formation was stimulated by lrhA inactivation and completely suppressed upon LrhA overproduction. The effects of LrhA on biofilm formation were exerted via the changed levels of surface molecules, most probably both flagella and type 1 fimbriae. Together, the data show a role for LrhA as a repressor of type 1 fimbrial expression, and thus as a regulator of the initial stages of biofilm development and, presumably, bacterial adherence to epithelial host cells also.

Liver receptor homolog 1 (LRH1, NR5A2) belongs to the orphan nuclear receptor superfamily and has diverse functions in development, differentiation, metabolism, and cell death. The LRH1 gene is expressed in embryonic stem cells and regulates the expression of OCT4, which is the key factor required to maintain pluripotency. However, the function of LRH1 in early porcine embryo development is still unknown. In the present study, we examined the localization and mRNA level of LRH1 in porcine parthenotes by immunofluorescence and real-time RT-qPCR. To explore the function of LRH1, the embryos were treated with the specific antagonist of LRH1, 505601, which is a cell-permeable pyrazolylbiphenylethanone compound that targets LRH-1/NR5A2 ligand binding domain (LBD) via direct affinity interaction, preventing LRH-1 from assuming an active conformation. Every group contained 20 embryos. The results showed that the immunofluorescence signal of LRH1 was only observed in nuclei of blastocyst cells. Inhibition of LRH1 by antagonist significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the blastocyst rate in the 50 µM (37.30 ± 3.67%) and 100 µM (38.02 ± 5.12%) treatment groups compared with the control group (53.43 ± 3.67%). The hatching rate of blastocysts was also reduced (P < 0.01) by 50 µM (12.66 ± 3.13%) and 100 µM (20.10 ± 2.81%) antagonist compared with control (40.59 ± 0.59%), which resulted from the decreased (P < 0.05) expression of hatching-related genes, such as FN1, ITGA5, and COX2. Inhibition of LRH1 also increased (P < 0.05) the number of apoptotic cells in blastocysts. Moreover, inhibition enhanced expression of apoptotic genes, BAX and CASP3, and reduced the anti-apoptosis gene BCL2 (P < 0.05). Messenger RNA and protein level of OCT4 were sharply decreased in blastocysts after LRH1 inhibition. All data were analysed with a one-way ANOVA, and differences between treatment groups were assessed by the least significant difference (LSD) test using SPSS software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). In conclusion, LRH1 affects blastocyst formation and hatching by regulating OCT4 expression and cell apoptosis.

Abstract We study ultraviolet H i and metal-line transitions in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 15 massive, quenched luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at redshift z ∼ 0.5 and with impact parameters up to 400 kpc. We selected eight LRG–CGM systems to study general properties of the CGM around LRGs, while the other seven are already known to contain cool CGM gas from Mg ii optical studies (Mg ii-LRGs). In the general LRG population, we detect H i in four of eight LRGs, in all cases with N H I < 1016.7cm−2. In contrast, all Mg ii-LRGs show H i; for four LRGs, the H i column density is N H I ≳ 1018cm−2. The CGM of LRGs also shows low and intermediate ionized lines (such as C iii, C ii, Si iii, and Si ii) and highly ionized lines of O vi (we detect O vi around five of seven Mg ii-LRGs and one of eight in the random sample). Next, we combine our sample with literature LRGs and ≲L * galaxies, and we find that while for ≲L * galaxies CGM H i Lyα absorption is stronger as galaxies are more massive, the cool CGM traced by H i Lyα is suppressed above stellar masses of M* ∼ 1011.5 M ☉. While most LRG–CGM systems show weak or nondetectable O vi (equivalent width < 0.2 Å), a few LRG–CGM systems show strong O vi 1031, which in most cases likely originates from groups containing both an LRG and a blue star-forming neighboring galaxy.

Lysosome-related organelles (LROs) are a group of functionally diverse, cell type-specific compartments. LROs include melanosomes, alpha and dense granules, lytic granules, lamellar bodies and other compartments with distinct morphologies and functions allowing specialised and unique functions of their host cells. The formation, maturation and secretion of specific LROs are compromised in a number of hereditary rare multisystem disorders, including Hermansky-Pudlak syndromes, Griscelli syndrome and the Arthrogryposis, Renal dysfunction and Cholestasis syndrome. Each of these disorders impacts the function of several LROs, resulting in a variety of clinical features affecting systems such as immunity, neurophysiology and pigmentation. This has demonstrated the close relationship between LROs and led to the identification of conserved components required for LRO biogenesis and function. Here, we discuss aspects of this conserved machinery among LROs in relation to the heritable multisystem disorders they associate with, and present our current understanding of how dysfunctions in the proteins affected in the disease impact the formation, motility and ultimate secretion of LROs. Moreover, we have analysed the expression of the members of the CHEVI complex affected in Arthrogryposis, Renal dysfunction and Cholestasis syndrome, in different cell types, by collecting single cell RNA expression data from the human protein atlas. We propose a hypothesis describing how transcriptional regulation could constitute a mechanism that regulates the pleiotropic functions of proteins and their interacting partners in different LROs.

Data from the Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations (PRCM) suggest that the prevalence of limb reduction defects (LRDs) in some Polish regions is significantly higher in comparison to that reported in the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) registry, but specific risk factors are still unknown. The objectives of this study were two-fold: to detect risk factors linked to isolated LRDs among Polish natives and to search for geospatial clusters of isolated LRDs to identify high-risk areas across the country. Among the 2,939,001 births accounted for in the PRCM, we determined that there were 852 children with distinct LRDs. Our data demonstrate that lower birth weight, prematurity, and maternal smoking history are strongly associated with isolated LRDs. Furthermore, our investigation pointed to various additional risk factors for isolated LRDs, including paternal education, gestational hypertension, upper respiratory tract infections, and exposure to anti-inflammatory drugs in the first trimester of pregnancy. We did not recognize statistically significant spatial or spatiotemporal clusters over the area of Poland using Kulldorff’s scan. Our study strengthens the hypothesis that maternal factors have an integral role in the etiology of isolated LRDs.

Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a new family of erasure codes used in distributed storage systems which have attracted a great deal of interest in recent years. For an [ n , k , d ] linear code, if a code symbol can be repaired by t disjoint groups of other code symbols, where each group contains at most r code symbols, it is said to have availability- ( r , t ) . Single-parity LRCs are LRCs with a constraint that each repairable group contains exactly one parity symbol. For an [ n , k , d ] single-parity LRC with availability- ( r , t ) for the information symbols (single-parity LRCs), the minimum distance satisfies d ≤ n - k - ⌈ k t / r ⌉ + t + 1 . In this paper, we focus on the study of single-parity LRCs with availability- ( r , t ) for information symbols. Based on the standard form of generator matrices, we present a novel characterization of single-parity LRCs with availability t ≥ 1 . Then, a simple and straightforward proof for the Singleton-type bound is given based on the new characterization. Some necessary conditions for optimal single-parity LRCs with availability t ≥ 1 are obtained, which might provide some guidelines for optimal coding constructions.

The proportion of the stations with LRCs accounts for about 97% of the total. Many factors affect the scaling properties of the daily SSD records such as sea-land difference and Tibetan Plateau landform and so on. We find land use and land cover as one of the important factors closely links to LRCs of the SSD. Strong LRCs of the SSD mainly happen in underlying surface of deserts and crops, while weak LRCs occur in forest and grassland. Further studies of scaling behaviors are still necessary to be performed due to the complex underlying surface and climate system.

Focus on form is operationalized through Language-Related Episodes (LREs), instances where learners turn their attention to formal aspects of language by questioning the accuracy of their own or each other’s language use. The study also compares two task types, jigsaw and dictogloss, with respect to the number and characteristics of LREs. Ten adult intermediate ESL learners from an intensive English language program in the US worked together in dyads to carry out one jigsaw and one dictogloss task in an SCMC environment. Tasks were controlled for content and were presented in two alternative orders. The dictogloss in this study generated more LREs than the jigsaw. LREs were also qualitatively different across task types. Jigsaw LREs were implicit and did not result in incorrectly solved outcomes, whereas dictogloss LREs were explicit and resulted in correctly solved, incorrectly solved, and unresolved outcomes.

Unbonded LRBs (laminated rubber bearings) are commonly applied in small-to-medium-span bridges in China. The frictional sliding characteristics of LRBs have a vital influence on the seismic response of the bridge. Nine square LRBs were subjected to the quasi-static displacement loading test in this paper, and the differences in sliding characteristics of LRBs at the interface of steel and concrete test pad were investigated. The variation of the friction coefficient during sliding was then analyzed. Based on the experimental data, a three-fold mechanical constitutive model of LRBs that considers the breakaway-sliding friction characteristics is established. Further, the bridge seismic demands in longitudinal directions with different friction interfaces are compared by nonlinear dynamic analysis on a typical LRB-supported concrete bridge. The results show the causalities of the displacements and decreases of the friction coefficient of the LRB. The breakaway coefficient of friction of the concrete surface was generally greater than that of the steel in the pre-sliding stage, while the sliding coefficient of friction of the steel interface in the post-sliding stage was greater than that of the concrete. Moreover, the proposed three-fold constitutive model is able to simulate the frictional sliding behavior of LRBs accurately. Lastly, the seismic design of small-to-medium-span bridges should take into account the breakaway-sliding friction effect of the LRBs and the preference for steel as friction pads for LRBs is recommended.

However, the damping effects and application of this method to multi-story subway station structures still need further study. In this paper, a stochastic analysis method, probability density evolution method (PDEM), is adopted to estimate the damping effect of a four-story subway station structure with lead rubber bearings (LRBs) installed in the central column. Stochastic analysis results show that the internal forces and plastic energy dissipation of columns installed LRBs are greatly reduced and the reliability is improved. Internal forces and plastic energy dissipation of columns without the installation of LRBs increase and the reliability decrease. There is little difference in structural deformation and plastic energy dissipation of structural components when LRB is installed in the middle of the column or at the column ends. When LRBs are installed only in some of the stories, the overall reliability of the structure is lower than that of the structure without LRB. When LRBs are installed in the columns of all stories, the structural reliability is higher than that of the structure without LRB. Based on the above results, to obtain better seismic control effect by installing LRBs, the multi-story subway station structure should be installed with LRBs in the columns of all stories, and LRBs can be installed at the upper, middle and lower end of the columns.

Pantoea stewartiisubsp.stewartiiis a Gram-negative proteobacterium that causes leaf blight and Stewart’s wilt disease in corn. Quorum sensing (QS) controls bacterial exopolysaccharide production that blocks water transport in the plant xylem at high bacterial densities during the later stage of the infection, resulting in wilt. At low cell density the key master QS regulator inP. stewartii, EsaR, directly repressesrcsA, encoding an activator of capsule biosynthesis genes, but activateslrhA, encoding a transcription factor that regulates surface motility. Both RcsA and LrhA have been shown to play a role in plant virulence. In this study, additional information about the downstream targets of LrhA and its interaction with RcsA was determined. A transcriptional fusion assay revealed autorepression of LrhA inP. stewartiiand electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSA) using purified LrhA confirmed that LrhA binds to its own promoter. In addition, LrhA binds to the promoter for the RcsA gene, as well as those for putative fimbrial subunits and biosurfactant production enzymes inP. stewartii, but not to theflhDCpromoter, which is the main direct target of LrhA inEscherichia coli. This work led to a reexamination of the physiological function of RcsA inP. stewartiiand the discovery that it also plays a role in surface motility. These findings are broadening our understanding of the coordinated regulatory cascades utilized in the phytopathogenP. stewartii.

Adult tissue stem cells replicate infrequently, retaining DNA nucleotide label (BrdU) for much longer periods than mature, dividing cells in which the label is diluted during a chase period. Those “label-retaining cells” (LRCs) have been identified as the tissue stem cells in skin, cornea, intestine, and prostate. However, in the urinary tract uroepithelial stem cells have not yet been identified. In this study, BrdU administration identified urothelial LRCs in the rat bladder with 9% of the epithelial basal cells retaining BrdU label 1 yr after its administration. Markers for stem cells in other tissues, Bcl, p63, cytokeratin 14, and β1 integrin, were immunolocalized in the basal bladder epithelium in or near urothelial LRCs, but not uniquely limited to these cells. Flow cytometry demonstrated that urothelial LRCs were small, had low granularity, and were uniquely β4 integrin bright. Urothelium from long-term labeled bladders was cultured and LRCs were found to be significantly more clonogenic and proliferative, characteristics of stem cells, than unlabeled urothelial cells. Thus, this work demonstrates that LRCs in the bladder localize to the basal layer, are small, low granularity, uniquely β4 integrin rich, slowly cycling and demonstrate superior clonogenic and proliferative ability compared with unlabeled epithelial cells. We propose that LRCs represent putative urothelial stem cells.

A considerable body of research within the Socio-cultural theory (Lantolf & Appel, 1994) examines how learners express their linguistic gaps verbally, or question their own or others’ language use when writing collaboratively, i.e., produce Languagerelated episodes (LREs; Swain & Lapkin, 1998). Several studies have also explored the effect that different patterns of interaction (Storch, 2002) have on the production of LREs with adult learners (e.g., Mozaffari, 2017; Storch & Aldosari 2013), but little research has compared the effect of these patterns of interaction and pair formation method (i.e., student-selected and proficiency-matched) on young EFL learners’ ability to attend to language, and much less on the type of grammatical features they focus on in LREs. This study examines young EFL learners’ (aged 10-12) production of LREs and pair dynamics in student-selected vs. proficiency-matched groups while completing a collaborative writing task. It was found that young EFL learners mainly exhibit a collaborative type of dynamics and resolved more LREs accurately, together with expert-novice groups. Matched proficiency was more beneficial, as these groups produced more target-like LREs. As per the type of form-focused LREs produced, these young learners focused primarily on spelling issues and less on grammatical knowledge-induced ones.

Many different household water treatment (HWT) methods have been researched and promoted to mitigate the serious burden of diarrheal disease in developing countries. However, HWT methods using bromine have not been extensively evaluated. Two gravity-fed HWT devices (AquaSure™ and Waterbird™) were used to test the antimicrobial effectiveness of HaloPure® Br beads (monobrominated hydantoinylated polystyrene) that deliver bromine. As water flows over the beads, reactive bromine species are eluted, which inactivate microorganisms. To assess log10 reduction values (LRVs) for Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella enterica Typhimurium, bacteriophage MS2, human adenovirus 2 (HAdV2), and murine norovirus (MN), these organisms were added to potable water and sewage-contaminated water. These organisms were quantified before and after water treatment by the HWT devices. On average, 6 LRVs against Vibrio were attained, as well as 5 LRVs against Salmonella, 4 LRVs against MS2, 5 LRVs against HAdV2, and 3 LRVs against MN. Disinfection was similar regardless of whether sewage was present. Polymer beads delivering bromine to drinking water are a potentially effective and useful component of HWT methods in developing countries.

ABSTRACT Regulation of the Escherichia coli stationary-phase sigma factor RpoS is complex and occurs at multiple levels in response to different environmental stresses. One protein that reduces RpoS levels is the transcription factor LrhA, a global regulator of flagellar synthesis. Here we clarify the mechanism of this repression and provide insight into the signaling pathways that feed into this regulation. We show that LrhA represses RpoS at the level of translation in a manner that is dependent on the small RNA (sRNA) chaperone Hfq. Although LrhA also represses the transcription of the sRNA RprA, its regulation of RpoS mainly occurs independently of RprA. To better understand the physiological signals affecting this pathway, a transposon mutagenesis screen was carried out to find factors affecting LrhA activity levels. The RcsCDB phosphorelay system, a cell envelope stress-sensing pathway, was found to repress lrhA synthesis. In addition, mutations in the gene encoding the DNA motor protein FtsK induce lrhA synthesis, which may explain why such strains fail to accumulate RpoS in stationary phase.

Abstract Cooley, C, Simonson, SR, and Maddy, DA. The force-vector theory supports use of the laterally resisted split squat to enhance change of direction. J Strength Cond Res 38(5): 835–841, 2024—The purpose of this study was to challenge the conventional change of direction (COD) training methods of the modern-day strength and conditioning professional. A new iteration of the modified single-leg squat (MSLS), the laterally resisted split squat (LRSS), is theorized to be the most effective movement for enhancing COD performance. This study lays out a rationale for this hypothesis by biomechanically comparing the LRSS, bilateral back squat (BS), and MSLS with a COD task (90-degree turn). One repetition maximum (1RM) for LRSS, MSLS, and BS was measured for 23 healthy active female subjects. Peak ground reaction forces (GRF) for the dominant leg were recorded when performing COD and the LRSS, MSLS, and BS at 70% 1RM. Peak frontal plane GRF magnitude and angle were calculated for each task and submitted to repeated measures ANOVA. Peak GRF magnitude was significantly larger for COD (2.23 ± 0.62 body weight) than the LRSS, MSLS, and BS (p ≤ 0.001). Peak GRF angle was not significantly different between COD and the LRSS (p = 0.057), whereas the MSLS and BS (p < 0.001) vector angles were significantly greater than COD. In this application of the force-vector theory, the LRSS more closely matches COD than the MSLS or BS. Thus, the LRSS has the greater potential to enhance COD.

11056 Background: We previously reported that secondary resection (2Surg) improved local relapse free (LRFS) but not overall survival (OS) in a retrospective series of pts with localized STS after unplanned 1st excision. Here we investigated the impact of 2Surg specifically after a first R1 or R2 resection in the 10931 pts with STS of the limb or trunk wall included in the nationwide NETSARC database from 2010 to 2017. Methods: NETSARC (netsarc.org) is a network of 26 reference sarcoma centers with specialized multidisciplinary tumor boards (MDT), funded by the French NCI (INCa). Since 2010, presentation to an MDTB and second pathological review are mandatory for sarcoma pts. Statistics were performed with SPSS23.0. LRFS, metastasis-free survival (MFS), OS compared with the logrank test. Results: The series included 5598 (51.2%) males. Median age was 56.7. Tumor sites: 5295 (49.4%) lower limb, 3670 (33.6%) trunk wall. 1966 (18.0%) upper limb. As previously reported in the entire series, local RFS (LRFS) and RFS (p<0.001), but not OS, were superior for pts presented to a NETSARC MDT (NMDT), or operated in a NETSARC center (N=4417, 41%). LRFS & OS were best for pts presented to a NMDT AND operated in NETSARC centers; while the worst LRFS & OS were observed in pts presented in a NMDT but not operated there (p<0.001). Among the 2081 pts with a first R1 resection in whom 2Surg was documented, 1047 (50.3%) were reoperated. R1 reoperated pts had a superior LRFS, metastatic free survival (MFS) and OS (p<0.001). LRFS (p<0.001), MFS (p=0.05) and OS (p<0.001) were superior after 2Surg only in pts operated 1st outside a Netsarc center. There were 823 pts with a first surgery with R2 resection in whom 2Surg was documented: 619 (75.2%) were reoperated. R2 reoperated patients had a superior LRFS and OS (p=0.01). MFS was not different. LRFS (p<0.001) & OS (p<0.001) were superior after 2Surg only in pts operated 1st outside a Netsarc center. 2028 (%) pts had 2Surg. Pts for whom 2Surg was in a NetSARC center had a superior LRFS (p<0.001) and OS (p=0.01) when operated first outside a NETSARC center. Conclusions: In this nationwide series of limb or trunk wall STS, 2Surg after a R1 or R2 primary excision improves LRFS & OS when the pts were operated 1st outside a reference center. 2Surg in a NETSARC center was associated with a better LRFS and OS.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Unlike other types of cancer, HCC can be treated with locoregional treatments (LRTs) such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). However, recurrences following LRTs are common, and strategies to improve long-term outcomes need to be developed. The exhaustion of anti-tumor immunity in HCC has been well established in many reports and the immunomodulatory effects of LRTs (enhancement of tumor antigen-specific T cell responses after RFA, reduction of effector regulatory T cells after TACE) have also been reported in several previous studies. However, a comprehensive review of previous studies and the possible roles of immunotherapy following LRTs in HCC are not known. In this review, we discuss the immunological evidence of current clinical trials using LRTs and combined immunotherapies, and the possible role of this strategy.

Utilizing a descriptive correlational approach with a quantitative method, the study found that the students perceived a very high extent of utilization of LRMS, appreciating its clear instructions and regular access to reliable internet. Additionally, the students exhibited high engagement levels with the LRMS regarding online activities, academic relevance, collaboration, and social interaction. Notably, a significant relationship was observed between the extent of LRMS utilization and online academic relevance in students' engagement. The study suggests implementing training programs for students and teachers to enhance LRMS utilization, inform school policies, and promote awareness of its benefits. These findings lay the foundation for future training initiatives and policy enhancements within the educational institution.

AbstractBelonging to the interactionist perspective, the collaborative dialogue is a technique which engages learners in joint problem-solving and knowledge building. With the aim of investigating the link between this technique and vocabulary acquisition and retention, this study was conducted with 18 threshold English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners who were randomly chosen and put in 6 groups. They were given 6 lexical-focused tasks to be completed collaboratively and their interaction was audio-recorded. The instances of lexical-based language-related episodes (LREs) were identified in the transcribed dialogues and their outcomes were coded as “correctly resolved”, “incorrectly resolved”, and “unresolved”. The frequency of the LREs was computed; it was found that the learners were able to solve the lexical problems they encountered to a very large extent. Furthermore, the analysis of LREs and the comparison of posttest and delayed posttest scores provided convincing evidence of a link between the outcomes of LREs and the learners’ vocabulary acquisition and retention, suggesting that “correctly resolved” LREs resulted in learning and retaining the target words, while “unresolved” LREs led to non-significant learning and “incorrectly resolved” LREs led to learning the wrong meaning of the vocabulary items. The findings along with the opportunities and challenges of collaborative dialogue are discussed and possible implications for language teaching are explained.

This paper studies the seismic and micro vibrations of the high-tech factory with and without lead rubber bearings (LRBs) using the three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis. The soil-structure interaction is included using the p-y, t-z, and Q-z nonlinear soil springs, while the time-history analysis is performed under seismic, wind, or moving crane loads. The finite element results indicate that the moving crane does not change the major ambient vibrations of the factory with and without LRBs. For a normal design of LRBs, the high-tech factory with LRBs can decrease the seismic base shear efficiently but will have a much larger wind-induced vibration than that without LRBs, especially for the reinforced concrete level. Because micro-vibration is a major concern for high-tech factories, one should use LRBs with a large initial stiffness to resist wind loads, and use a small final LRB stiffness to reduce the seismic load of high-tech factories. This situation may make it difficult to obtain a suitable LRB, but it is an opportunity to reduce the seismic response without increasing the micro-vibration of high-tech factories.

Image-guided locoregional therapies (LRTs) are a crucial asset in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which has proven to be characterized by an impaired antitumor immune status. LRTs not only directly destroy tumor cells but also have an immunomodulating role, altering the tumor microenvironment with potential systemic effects. Nevertheless, the immune activation against HCC induced by LRTs is not strong enough on its own to generate a systemic significant antitumor response, and it is incapable of preventing tumor recurrence. Currently, there is great interest in the possibility of combining LRTs with immunotherapy for HCC, as this combination may result in a mutually beneficial and synergistic relationship. On the one hand, immunotherapy could amplify and prolong the antitumoral immune response of LRTs, reducing recurrence cases and improving outcome. On the other hand, LTRs counteract the typical immunosuppressive HCC microenvironment and status and could therefore enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy. Here, after reviewing the current therapeutic options for HCC, we focus on LRTs, describing for each of them the technique and data on its effect on the immune system. Then, we describe the current status of immunotherapy and finally report the recently published and ongoing clinical studies testing this combination.

AbstractPrevious research has documented that collaborative dialogue promotes L2 learning in both face-to-face (F2F) and synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) modalities. However, relatively little research has explored modality effects on collaborative dialogue. Thus, motivated by sociocultual theory, this study examines how F2F compares with SCMC regarding the generation of collaborative dialogue specifically in terms of its frequency and nature. Thirty-two Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) students participated in this study and completed two types of collaborative tasks (i.e. dictogloss and jigsaw) in dyads in both modalities. The analyses of learners’ exchanges focused on language-related episodes (LREs), the instantiation of collaborative dialogue. The identified LREs were categorized based on their focus, outcome and type. A follow-up questionnaire was conducted to elicit students’ perspectives. The results revealed that LREs were more frequent in SCMC than in F2F. Furthermore, the analyses of the nature of LREs indicated some cross-modality differences: whereas SCMC LREs had the features of orthographical, correct and self-correction outcomes, F2F LREs were characterized by incorrect and request for assistance outcomes. Pedagogical implications and suggestions for the future research were also discussed.
