Sandwich structures are often used as protective structures on ships. To further improve the energy-absorbing characteristics of traditional honeycomb sandwich structures, an energy-absorbing mechanism is proposed based on the gradient folding deformation of lotus root nodes and a leafy stem vein homogenizing load mechanism. A honeycomb sandwich structure is then designed that combines lotus root nodes and leafy stem veins. Four types of peak-nest structures, traditional cellular structure (TCS), lotus root honeycomb structure (LRHS), leaf vein honeycomb structure (LVHS), and lotus root vein combined honeycomb structure (LRVHS), were prepared using 3D printing technology. The deformation modes and energy absorption characteristics of the four honeycomb structures under quasistatic action were investigated using a combination of experimental and simulation methods. It was found that the coupling design improved the energy absorption in the structural platform region of the LRHS by 51.4% compared to that of the TCS due to its mechanical mechanism of helical twisting and deformation. The leaf vein design was found to enhance the peak stress of the structure, resulting in a 4.84% increase in the peak stress of the LVHS compared to that of the TCS. The effects of the number, thickness, and position of the leaf vein plates on the honeycomb structure were further explored. The greatest structural SEA effect of 1.28 J/g was observed when the number of leaf vein plates was four. The highest SEA of 1.36 J/g was achieved with a leaf vein plate thickness of 0.6 mm, representing a 7.3% improvement compared to that of the 0.2 mm thickness. These findings may provide valuable insights into the design of lightweight honeycomb sandwich structures with high specific energy absorption.

A series of layered rare-earth hydroxides (LRHs) of (Y,Ln)2(OH)5NO3•nH2O ( Ln=Tb,Eu), have been synthesized via a hydrothermal route. Crystal structures and optical properties of the materials have been investigated in detail by the combined techniques of XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and PLE/PL spectroscopies. It is shown that Tb3+ and Eu3+ are successfully incorporated into the Y-LRH host lattice to form solid solutions. Under UV excitation, the binary (Y0.97Tb0.03)- and (Y0.97Eu0.03)-LRHs exhibit their respective characteristic photoluminescence of the Eu3+ and Tb3+ activators. The ternary (Y0.965Eu0.005Tb0.03)-LRH simultaneously shows red and green emissions and both the intensity and emission color can be adjusted by changing the excitation wavelength. Compared with (Y0.995Eu0.005)-LRH, the ternary (Y0.965Eu0.005Tb0.03)-LRH exhibits appreciably enhanced 615nm red-emission, which indicates the existence of non- radiative energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+. The ternary (Y0.965Eu0.005Tb0.03)-LRH also readily undergoes anion exchange with a series of inorganic and organic anions at room temperature.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to compare the mission statements of the hospitals listed on the 2014 US News & World Report’s Best Hospitals List to investigate the research question, “Are high ranking hospitals (HRH) more likely than low ranking hospitals (LRH) to address cultural diversity in strategic statements?” Design/methodology/approach The strategic statements of 44 HRH and 56 LRH were compared using chi-square and Fisher’s exact test. Findings While the data do not support the notion that HRHs are more likely than LRHs to address diversity in strategic statements, HRHs are more likely than LRHs to actually devote resources to address the issues of cultural diversity. Research limitations/implications The current research is limited to a sample taken from the US News & World Report Best Hospitals. This is not a definitive list, and a multitude of third-party hospital raters exist – each with its own unique metrics. Practical implications The results do not show a relationship between a hospital’s mission statement and its ranking in the US News List of Best Hospitals. However, the findings suggest that hospitals that maintain a dedicated diversity manager/office do tend to be higher ranked. Originality/value This is the first known investigation of the relationship between the inclusion of diversity in hospital mission statements and hospital rankings. The research suggests that addressing diversity in strategic statements is simply not enough and that dedicated, ground-level resources are necessary to properly impact quality care and third-party ratings.

6545 Background: While USPSTF and ACP have determined that Sc for CRC is beneficial, the practice of Sc and its benefits are not established in LRHS caring for the uninsured. We tested the hypothesis that Sc could result in a reduction in the therapy (Tx) costs for CRC and offset Sc costs. Methods: Using a Markov model we performed individual level microsimulations (ILMS) of 100,000 subjects ≥ 50 years with average risk of CRC. Five Sc strategies (ST) were tested: Fecal occult blood (FOBT) and fecal immune chemical (FIT) annually and biannually (FOBT2, FIT2), and colonoscopy (CS) every 10 years. No Sc was used as referent ST (Ref). Compliance with Sc was assumed at 16% for FOBT and FIT and 56% for CS. Sc was offered to 100, 50 and 25% of the subjects in 3 separate ILMS. Life Years Gained (LYG) and Incremental Cost Effectiveness Ratios (ICER) were calculated. Costs and LYG discounted at 3%. Results: Mean follow up: 12.6 years. At all coverage levels all STs resulted in decreased CRC costs by 9-17% and deaths by 14-41%. CS decreases CRC incidence by 5-26%. At higher coverage rates, CS remains the best ST, but at 25% and lower coverage FOBT and FIT function better. Conclusions: These data support systematic use of Sc for CRC in LRHS. Until resources for CS are available, lives and costs could be saved by simple measures such as FOBT and FIT and enrolling as few as 4,552 subjects. [Table: see text]

Basalt was used as an ornamental stone in any historic and ancient cities in Jordan. Measuring the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the tangent Young’s modulus (Et) in the laboratory requires premium quality specimens with special core dimensions. This research focuses on correlations both UCS and Et with Leeb Rebound Hardness Test (LRH). In the laboratory, UCS, Et, and LRH were performed on 90 core samples extracted from 30 different rock boulders collected from the neighboring area of Umm al-Jimal, a historic city in northeastern Jordan. A strong power correlation with (R2 = 0.888, RMSE = 5.464) was found between non-destructive LRH value and UCS. On the other hand, a moderately strong linear regression with (R2 = 0.792, RMSE = 4.661) was found between Et and LRH. In conclusion, non-destructive LRHs can be used as indictors for evaluating both UCS and Et during the restoration of the historic city Umm al-Jimal and the rehabilitation of other existing structures.

Two dimensional nanophosphors of high quality play an important role in the miniaturization and intelligentization of opto-electronic components. In this present work, ultra-large (30μm) single crystals of (Y0.95Eu0.05)2(OH)5NO3·nH2O layered rare earth hydroxide (LRH) with a hexagonal shape have been synthisized via autoclaving the rare-earth nitrate/NH4OH reaction system in the presence of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). The nitrate ions, existing in the interlayer gallery of layered rare earth hydroxide, exhibit facile exchanges with oleate anions by hydrothermal anion exchange. Furthermore, the interlayer distance can thus be expanded from ~0.9 nm for the pristine LRHs to ~3.60 nm for the intercalated ones, which are then efficiently delaminated into unilamellar nanosheets with a lateral size of 10μm and a thickness of ~1.50 nm. The obtained nanosheets are single crystaline. Highly [11 oriented, dense (Y0.95Eu0.05)2O3 phosphor films with excellent optical transparency and a greatly enhanced luminescence intensity have been constructed via self-assembly of ultra-large unilamellar LRH nanosheets, followed by proper annealing.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) offers a cost-effective and accurate method for inputting, updating, and analyzing spatial data. However, many data-storage and reporting methods at state departments of transportation and other transportation agencies rely on linear referencing methods (LRMs) for managing transportation data. Consequently, GPS data must be able to coexist with linear referencing systems (LRSs). Unfortunately, the two systems are fundamentally different in the way they collect, integrate, and manipulate data. For spatial data collected with GPS to be integrated into an LRS or shared among LRMs, several issues must be addressed. Various issues are discussed for integrating point features from a typical inventory system with an LRM or between LRMs, including two- or three-dimensional GPS to one-dimensional LRM, linear offset error, lateral offset error, matching to the wrong segment, and locating points between LRMs.

The object of this dissertation is to analyse the concept of doubt in Descartes, in order to elucidate the roots of its constitution and determine the role played by scepticism in this process. By comparing Descartes with the sceptics, one can conclude that he was influencedmostly by the modern philosophers, his contemporaries (Montaigne, Charron, La Mothe Le Vayer) and that, as to the ancient scepticism, the most important is the distinction between academic and Pyrronian scepticism, which is vital to comprehend the philosopher. Theanalysis of Popkins theory, which is central when trying to determine the role played by skepticism in Descartes philosophy, reveals that there is not enough evidence to validate the idea that Descartes primary aim was to refute scepticism. Nevertheless, one should not underestimate the place occupied by scepticism in Descartes philosophy, for his doubt must be seen as an important step in the search for the truth. It is necessary to point out the fact that scepticism influenced Descartes both in a positive and a negative way. It is by leaving aside one of these aspects that most of the philosophers commentators present radical orinsufficient theories concerning the connection between Descartes and scepticism. To avoid this, one should be attentive to the distinction between academic and Pryrrhonian scepticism, since, while Pyrrhonian scepticism is refused by Descartes, many elements of academicscepticism are assimilated by him.
O objetivo dessa dissertação é analisar o estatuto da dúvida em Descartes, tendo em vista elucidar as raízes de sua constituição e determinar o papel do ceticismo nesse processo. Por meio da comparação com os céticos chega-se a conclusão de que Descartes foi influenciado principalmente pelos modernos contemporâneos a ele (Montaigne, Charron e La Mothe Le Vayer) e que, em relação ao ceticismo antigo, o mais importante é a distinção entre acadêmicos e pirrônicos, que será fundamental para a compreensão do filósofo. A análise da tese de Popkin, que se coloca como central, tendo em vista o objetivo de determinar o papel do ceticismo na filosofia cartesiana, revela que não há provas suficientes para validar a ideia de que a refutação do ceticismo seria o principal objetivo de Descartes. Todavia, o lugar do ceticismo na filosofia cartesiana não pode ser menosprezado, pois a dúvida deve ser vista como um passo necessário na busca da verdade. Há que se destacar o fato de que o ceticismo deve ser visto como exercendo uma influência tanto negativa, quanto positiva em Descartes. É por deixar de lado um, ou outro, desses aspectos que a maioria dos comentadores do filósofo apresenta teorias radicais ou insuficientes a respeito da relação entre Descartes e o ceticismo. Para se escapar a isso se deve atentar para a distinção entre ceticismo acadêmico e pirrônico, pois enquanto o ceticismo pirrônico é recusado por Descartes, muitos dos elementos do ceticismo acadêmico são assimilados por ele.

This research investigates the existing situation regarding libraries and Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) and their infrastructure in Oman, with particular reference to those institutions in the educational system. A range of issues regarding management and organisation, resources and users are explored, as well as the adoption of modem technology in these libraries and LRCs. Two models were developed for the study. The first model was prepared to show the organisational information system, while the second model examined the impact of different types of information-seeking behaviour on the use of information sources. Data have been collected both via questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires involved the investigation of school library users (teachers and students) in preparatory and secondary schools; and academic libraries and LRC users (faculty and students) at Sultan Qaboos University, Colleges of Education and Technical Industrial Colleges. The interview questions were put to the directors and heads of libraries and LRCs. The survey focused on eleven areas: staff; budget, acquisitions, policies, co-operation, library and LRC use, resources, services, information technology, education and future development.

Environmental events simultaneously transduced by more than one sensory modality underlie multisensory processing in the CNS. While most studies of multisensory processing examine functional effects, none have evaluated the influence of local or columnar circuitry. The goal of the present study is to examine of local features of the ferret lateral rostral suprasylvian sulcus (LRSS), a multisensory cortex. Immunostaining revealed the cytoarchitectonic features of the LRSS: thick supragranular layers, a narrow layer IV, and moderately stained but differentiated infragranular layers. Golgi-Cox techniques were used with light microscopy and digital reconstruction to document neuronal morphology. Among the 90 reconstructed neurons, 4 distinct forms or pyramidal and 2 types of non-pyramidal neurons were found. Measurement of maximal dendritic spread indicates that a cortical column in the LRSS was 250.9 um in diameter. These results describe local features of the LRSS upon which future experiments of intrinsic circuitry will be based.

For the brain to construct a comprehensive percept of the sensory world, information from the different senses must converge onto individual neurons within the central nervous system. As a consequence, how these neurons convert convergent sensory input into multisensory information is an important question facing neuroscience today. Recent physiological studies have demonstrated the presence of a robust population of multisensory neurons in the lateral bank of the rostral suprasylvian sulcus (LRSS) in adult ferret (Keniston et al, 2008). The LRSS is a region situated between somatosensory and auditory cortices, where bimodal (somatosensory-auditory) neurons occupy the greatest percentage of the sensory-responsive cell population. The present study was designed to evaluate the anatomical connections that underlie these multisensory features. Injections of neuroanatomical tracer were first made into the LRSS. After transport and histological processing, microscopy revealed retrogradely-labeled cell bodies in identified regions of cortex and thalamus. The resultant analysis showed that the greatest number of projections to LRSS originated in auditory and somatosensory cortex. Of these, auditory cortex contributed a greater proportion of inputs. These anatomical data support the idea that LRSS is a multisensory cortex that receives primarily bimodal input from auditory and somatosensory sources.

Politikai įvairiai deklaruoja savo elgesį, todėl vienintelis būdas juos kontroliuoti – stebėjimas. Šiame darbe yra analizuojamas LRS darbas, susijęs su balsavimais. Stengiamasi atsakyti į klausimą: ar informacinių technologijų įrankiai gali leisti nustatyti ar Seimo narių priklausomybė partijai (frakcijai) ar pozicijai (opozicijai) lemia jų balsavimą? Pagrindiniai darbo tikslai – Seimo narių grupavimas ir balsavimo kitimo aptikimas. Apžvelgiama 2008-2012 metų Seimo kadencijos veikla, atlikta balsavimų statistinė analizė, taip pat apžvelgti kiti tyrimai, susiję su parlamentinėmis veiklomis. Seimo narių grupavimui taikome klasterizavimo metodus. Klasterizavimas gali būti apibrėžiamas kaip objektų suskirstymas į grupes (klasterius), kuriose objektų skirtumai yra kuo mažesni, o tarp grupių skirtumai - kuo didesni. Darbe apžvelgiami įvairūs klasterizavimo metodai, jų veikimo principai, aprašomi atstumų tarp objektų skaičiavimo metodai, kokybės įvertinimo kriterijai. Balsavimų duomenys saugomi MySQL duomenų bazėje, todėl sukurtas įrankis duomenų apdorojimui. Aprašomi visi darbo etapai: naudoti įrankiai, balsavimo kodavimas, balsavimų skaidymas į periodus. Politicians declare their behavior in different ways, so the only way to control it - monitoring. In this thesis tools for Lithuanian Parliament Members voting behavior are analyzed. The question is following: can Information technologies tool help to determine how membership in a faction or the position (opposition) is related with voting behavior? The main objectives of this work are Lithuanian Parliament members grouping by their voting behavior and its' change detection. In the thesis the 2008-2012 of the Parliament activities are analysed using statistical voting analysis. We use clustering for grouping members of the Parliament. A loose definition of clustering could be the process of organizing objects into groups whose members are similar in some way. A cluster (group) is a collection of objects which are similar between them and are dissimilar to the objects belonging to other clusters. We overviewed different clustering methods and their principles of operation, described the distance between the objects of calculation methods, quality evaluation criteria in this work. Voting data is stored in MySQL database, hence a tool was created for data processing. We describe all the stages of the work: the use of tools, coding of the votes, division of the votes into the periods. This has paid off: there is a national research infrastructure, as well as significant research projects, and Swedish is well-endowed with language resources (LRs) and tools. However, there are gaps that need to be filled, especially high-quality goldstandard LRs required by the most recent deep-learning methods. In the future, we would like to see closer collaborations and communication between the “traditional” LT research community and the burgeoning AI field, the establishment of dedicated academic LT training programmes, and national funding for LT research.

AbstractThis deep dive on data, knowledge graphs (KGs) and language resources (LRs) is the final of the four technology deep dives, as data as well as related models are the basis for technologies and solutions in the area of Language Technology (LT) for European digital language equality (DLE). This chapter focuses on the data and LRs required to achieve full DLE in Europe by 2030. The main components identified – data, KGs, LRs – are explained, and used to analyse the state-of-the-art as well as identify gaps. All of these components need to be tackled in the future, for the widest range of languages possible, from official EU languages to dialects to non- EU languages used in Europe. For all these languages, efficient data collection and sustainable data provision to be facilitated with fair conditions and costs. Specific technologies, methodologies and tools have been identified to enable the implementation of the vision of DLE by 2030. In addition, data-related business models and data-governance models are discussed, as they are considered a prerequisite for a working data economy that stimulates a vibrant LT landscape that can bring about European DLE.

The focus of this paper is to study the application of Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) side-load requirements to Low Floor LRVs (LF LRVs). Although the side-load requirements of LRVs are not completely consistent among different transit authorities, an industry pseudo-standard of 40,000 lbs applied over an 8 foot span at the side sill has emerged. In LF LRVs, this standard may not provide the same level of safety as in High Floor LRVs (HF LRVs). In some US automobiles, the bottom of the bumper is higher than the top of the floor in LF LRVs. Given comparable sidewall construction, when a passenger vehicle impacts the side of an LRV, the opportunity for intrusion/override into the passenger compartment in a LF LRV is higher than that in a HF LRV. The popularity of light trucks, SUVs, minivans and other vehicles with high bumper heights further aggravates this situation.

This paper presents a part of “Development of an Evaluation Method for Seismic Isolation Systems of Nuclear Power Facilities”. Ultimate behavior and failure modes of full-scale Lead Rubber Bearings (LRBs) of 1600mm diameter were described herein based on a series of the break tests which conducted on 11 LRBs to obtain a break surface. The shear break tests were monotonically conducted on 3 full-scale LRBs under various axial stresses. Then the monotonic tensile break tests were performed on 5 full-scale LRBs with or without constant offset shear strain. In addition, 3 half-scale LRBs of 800mm diameter were also tested to study the size effect and the ultimate shear behavior in significantly high compression. In the evaluation on the test results, the ultimate strain and stress were firstly summarized to define a break surface for the real-scale LRBs. Then the LRBs broken in the testing were carefully observed to evaluate their failure modes. It was found that the full-scale LRBs exhibited good seismic performance in horizontal ductility capacity and vertical load carrying capacity. It seems that the ultimate properties and the failure modes were basically less affected by the scale of the models.

This paper is a part of the series “Development of an Evaluation Method for Seismic Isolation Systems of Nuclear Power Facilities.” This part presents a break test plan and development of a test machine for a full-scale lead rubber bearing (LRB). Application of seismic base-isolation systems using LRBs of 1600 mm in diameter to reactor building has been considered for the purpose of enhancing seismic safety. It is important to obtain the ultimate properties of isolators in order to estimate the seismic safety margin of seismic base-isolated structures against a beyond design-basis earthquake events. Recent studies reveal that the scaled effect appears on the ultimate properties of seismic rubber bearings. However, because of the limitation of the loading capabilities of loading machines, the ultimate property of such a large scale LRBs has not been confirmed. In this study, the break tests for LRBs of 1600 mm in diameter is planned on the basis of estimation that refers to previous studies on break tests for small-scale LRBs and natural rubber bearings. The world-largest class test machine is designed and constructed to conduct static break tests for the full-scale LRBs. Furthermore, the performance of the test machine is evaluated from test results including those for break tests.

This paper provides a series comprising the “Development of Evaluation Method for Seismic Isolation Systems of Nuclear Power Facilities”. Part 6 presents scaled tests for Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) newly developed for this project. Following tests are performed to obtain the basic characteristics of LRB,. (1) Horizontal and Vertical Simultaneous Loading Test: LRBs with diameter of 250mm are tested dynamically under simultaneous axial and lateral loading. The hysteresis characteristics is not changed under compressive load although it is changed under tensile load. (2) Basic Break Test: LRBs with a diameter of 800mm are tested statically under various combinations of axial and lateral forces. The hysteresis characteristics model of LRB is determined by this test. It is confirmed that the breaking strain of LRB under compression load exceeds 450%. (3) Horizontal Hardening and Vertical Softening Test: For LRBs with a diameter of 1200 mm, 75% scale of actual LRB are tested statically for horizontal hardening and vertical softening regions. It is confirmed that the hysteresis model which is developed by smaller LRBs is applicable to these large scale models.

The majority of fatalities that occur from light rail vehicle (LRV) operations are occupants of automobiles that are struck by the LRVs. Recent developments of crashworthiness standards for LRVs by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Rail Transit Vehicle Standards Committee included consideration of a wide variety of crash scenarios including collisions between LRVs and street running automobiles. The requirements included in the standard are primarily to create an enclosed front end geometry where the struck vehicle will not be entrapped or overridden. A smooth enclosed front end profile is a primary requirement for improving the compatibility of LRVs colliding with automobiles. More recently, a study has been initiated by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to develop LRV front end features that further improve the crash compatibility with automobiles. The approach depends on results from computer simulation modeling of vehicle collisions across a wide variety of LRV bumper designs, some with and some without energy absorbers. Results of the study and the design of the energy absorbing bumper system are presented.

Background: Complex nonunions are difcult to manage due to the presence of infection, deformities, shortening, and multiple surgeries in the past. Ilizarov xation has traditionally been used to manage complex nonunions. The disadvantages of Ilizarov include poor patient compliance, frame inconvenience, and difcult frame construction. We studied ten long bone infective nonunions treated with the limb reconstruction system (LRS). Materials and methods : Between September 2020 and December 2022, we treated 10 cases of infective nonunion of long bone with the LRS. Patients were routinely followed up for 12 to 18 months and assessed both clinically and radiologically. Out of 10 cases we were able to achieve Results : : union in all cases. And eradication of infection in 90% of cases with no limb length discrepancy in any case. Bone results are excellent in 80% of cases and good in 20% of cases. Functional results are excellent in 80% of cases and good in 10% of cases, fair in 10% of cases. LRS is an alternati Conclusion : ve to the Ilizarov xation in their management of complex nonunion of long bones. It is less cumbersome to the patient and more surgeon and patient friendly.
