This article discusses Coin Acceptors Inc.’s designs and manufactures’ vending machines, control systems, bill acceptors, and coin changers for the snack and beverage industry. The company, based in St. Louis, sells its products through branch companies as far away as Europe and Australia. To improve the industry’s machines, the firm set out to offer a high-capacity coin changer, which would operate a bit differently. It was during the design of this device that our engineering team at Coin Acceptors was reminded of an important design principle: No gear operates alone. With the production date for their coin changer looming, they needed to come up with solutions fast. The company decided to bring the design in-house. Load analysis suggested a benefit from a material change for the ring gears. They chose a reinforced nylon from Ticona of Summit, N.J. The material offers more strength without increasing wear. It also has a reduced coefficient of thermal expansion, which meant 25 percent less fluctuation in backlash and contact ratio throughout the wide operating temperature range.

Abstract Bearings provide the primary interface between the moving and the stationary parts of a machine. Although the seal and the process fluids (or magnetic fields) coexist, the bearings provide the majority of the stiffness and damping for the moving assembly. It is understandable that dynamic forces developed on the moving part are transmitted to the stationary part across these main support bearings. The forces may be the static radial loads due to the rotor weight, or they may be dynamic forces due to mechanisms such as mass unbalance. In either case, the radial bearings must carry the applied loads, or the machine will fail. In most cases, it is technically difficult (if not impossible) to directly check the validity or accuracy of the computed bearing coefficients. However, each calculation must conclude with a force balance, plus a position balance of the journal within the bearing clearance. For this case history, consider a group of four single shaft gas turbines that operate between 5,000 and 5,350 RPM. These units are rated at 40,000 HP, and they are used to drive high pressure centrifugal compressors through a single helical gear box. The shaft sensing proximity probes are mounted at ±450 from the true vertical centerline. At turbine inlet end#1 bearing, the probes are mounted above the shaft. Conversely, at the exhaust end #2 bearing, the probes are located below the shaft. Since journal within an oil film bearing can be measured directly with proximity probes, it is logical perform a check of the analytical prediction versus actual machine data. It is reasonable to believe that if the calculated eccentricity position is correct, than the other computed parameters are also representative of the bearing characteristics. Keywords: journal bearing, gas turbine, proximity probes, eccentricity position.

This thesis examines the discourse regarding the Linnaeus Monument in Humlegården, Stockholm, and the Louis De Geer statue at The Old Square, Norrköping. It further analyzes the significance that sculptures gained during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020, in relation to anti-racism and historical phenomena of 'damnatio memoriae'. With a theoretical framework of postcolonialism and critical race theory, this thesis aims to highlight and analyze the reasonings that were central during the debate, focusing on anti-racist and people of color's voices. Thus, critical discourse analysis and semiotics are used as methods to create an understanding of authority and to shed light on Sweden's own view of its colonial history and elevate the discussion concerning race, class, gender, and power, etcetera, in relation to public art. The thesis, hence, argues how public places in society can be decolonized with the intention of creating a home for all of us.

Nortjé, Elizabeth Louise. „Embodiment in the poetry of Gabeba Baderoon / Elizabeth Louise Nortjé“. Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/11094.

Annotation:
This dissertation examines the relation between embodiment and language, knowledge and memory, as explored in the poetry of South African poet Gabeba Baderoon. In her three published collections of poetry, namely, The Museum of Ordinary Life, The Dream in the Next Body and A Hundred Silences, she depicts seemingly trivial and everyday events or experiences with acute attention to detail, all of which are connected by her unique portrayal of their embodied nature. In doing so, her work illustrates that intellectual activities typically associated with the mind, such as language, knowledge and memory, in fact require the incorporation of the body. Therefore, this dissertation studies the mind-body relation represented in her work with regard to these thematic concerns, since it is a crucial aspect of her poetry and aids not only in understanding and interpreting her work, but also the discourse on embodiment in general. These concerns do, moreover, not remain on a thematic level, but are evident in her poetry itself; that is, her poems too act as a form of embodiment. Furthermore, Baderoon’s poems are able to transcend the supposed mind-body dichotomy in a way that shows much in common with phenomenology, and especially the perspective held by authors such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty. This dissertation incorporates phenomenological ideas on the body and embodiment, as these assist in interpreting Baderoon’s work, as well as for the reason that her poetry sheds new light upon the understanding of such phenomenological ideas, too. Thus, this dissertation seeks to elucidate the manner in which Gabeba Baderoon’s poetry transcends the mind-body dichotomy by means of her exceptional employment of the notion of embodiment on a thematic as well as formal level.
