Smith, Helen. „Artist as navigator : understanding how the social qualities of art influence organizational change : a methodology for art as a social practice“. Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/1377.

Annotation:
• What insights can art reveal in the context of organizational change? • How do artistic practices influence the way communities address change? • In what ways can an individual artistic practice concerned with the role of art in society add new insights to theories and practices of contemporary art? These questions are approached through three interrelated methods. In the first the artist as researcher consciously addresses organizational change through her artistic practice, over a three year period, within the different communities of Woodend Barn, a volunteer-led arts centre in the North East of Scotland. The second method is a literature review focusing on the selected artistic practices of Allan Kaprow, Suzanne Lacy and Artist Placement Group. Each practice is discussed in relation to the underpinning philosophical principals of Pragmatism, in particular John Dewey’s ideas on the generative qualities of aesthetic experience. These insights inform the research as it unfolds within the organizational context of Woodend Barn, itself at a point of significant change. The third method draws on anthropologist Michel de Certeau’s theory of the act of speaking to define the details of social interaction. This leads to a conversational method of analysis that draws out the synergies and differences of the chairperson of Woodend Barn and the artist. The analysis aims to understand the qualities and conditions for social interaction in arts practice and how they affect change in organizational contexts. It has become apparent that a key condition of the artwork is an artist who is committed to a refined and informed understanding of the social dynamics of art (as evidenced in the two principal projects Fold (2012) and Lavender (2012-2014)). It is important to recognize that not all artists have these skills or are interested in adopting a social focus in their practice. The research sets out to address and influence new generations of artists and more broadly, to rethink the value of social interaction in artists practices in relation to economic values. Understanding how social interactions become generative sense-making experiences is an important quality of the practice and research findings. This resonates with Dewey’s theory that it is through the unconstrained characteristics of art that aesthetic experience can shift deeply- rooted ways of thinking. The research concludes with a social manifesto for art that outlines the conditions for individuals from different communities to act in ways that are self-directed and lead to community resilience.

Artist communities are often the first in revolting within a repressive society in the outer marginal borders of state control. This silent revolt takes place in the time period before larger oppositional movements gain momentum. However, the research has been scarce, especially when looking at the specific circumstance of the 17 years long Chilean dictatorship and the social influence that the artists had during this period. This Bachelor thesis will treat the subject and time period from a specific cultural angle, namely the effect the artistic production made by a specific art group, Colectivo de Acciones de Arte (henceforth named CADA) had on the social, and in effect, political discourse in society. CADA, a group of four Chilean artists, sociologists and writers, started collaborating in 1979, applying their artistic endeavors within a social practice that intended to interrupt and challenge the normalized routines of daily life during the Pinochet dictatorship – by utilizing semiotics and signs to reorganize and transform urban behaviors and social discourse. To illustrate the conversation CADAs production held, I will analyze two art works from their total oeuvre, as I am interested in researching the forbidden discourse that the artist movement conducted in Chile at this particular time. During the dictatorship, the official politics regressed to favor cultural symbols and expressions with a patriotic, nationalist and conservative message. This thesis wants to investigate the clash between the rules imposed by the ruling military regime and the actual art scene in Chile.

With the advent of quantum computers, the security of number-theoretic cryptography has been compromised. Consequently, new cryptosystems have been suggested in the field of non-commutative group theory. In this thesis, we provide all the necessary background to understand and work with the Artin groups. We then show that Artin groups of finite type and Artin groups of large type possess an easily-computable normal form by explicitly writing the algorithms. This solution to the word problem makes these groups candidates to be cryptographic platforms. Finally, we present some combinatorial problems that can be used in group-based cryptography and we conjecture, through empirical evidence, that the conjugacy problem in Artin groups of large type is not a hard problem.

Many artist-teachers struggle to nurture and pursue their ambitions in their dual roles. The purpose of this research is to explore the nature of the professional practices of artist-teachers. While there is a substantial amount of research that provides models of artist-teachers, who teach at the post secondary levels, there are not many models for artist-teachers who teach primary and secondary age groups. Four artist-teachers, whose practices are currently contributing to the art world, as well as the educational world, were interviewed for a multiple case study. The roles represented in the study include painters, sculptors, a ceramist, a musician, a performance artist, art teachers, a music teacher, and a performance-art educator. This multiple case study provides four models of artist-teachers whose professional practices contribute to their identity and fulfillment in their dual roles. The study reveals the artist-teacher’s practice as an artist, practice as a teacher and relationship between the dual roles.

Annotation:
Critical phenomena and phase transitions are important subjects in statistical mechanics and probability theory. They are connected to the phenomenon of universality that makes the study of mathematically simple models physically relevant. Examples of such models include ferromagnetic spin systems such as the Ising, O(n) and n-component |φ|⁴ models, but also the self-avoiding walk that has been observed to formally correspond to a "zero-component" spin model by de Gennes. Our subject in this thesis is the extension and application of a rigorous renormalisation group method developed by Bauerschmidt, Brydges and Slade to study the critical behaviour of the continuous-time weakly self-avoiding walk and of the n-component |φ|⁴ model on the 4-dimensional square lattice ℤ⁴. Although a "zero-component" vector is mathematically undefined (at least naively), we are able to interpret the weakly self-avoiding walk in a mathematically rigorous manner as the n = 0 case of the n-component |φ|⁴ model, and provide a unified treatment of both models. For the |φ|⁴ model, we determine the asymptotic decay of the critical correlation functions including the logarithmic corrections to Gaussian scaling, for n ≥ 1. This extends previously known results for n = 1 to all n ≥ 1, and also observes new phenomena for n > 1, all with a new method of proof. For the continuous-time weakly self-avoiding walk, we determine the decay of the critical generating function for the "watermelon" network consisting of p weakly mutually- and self-avoiding walks, for all p ≥ 1, including the logarithmic corrections. This extends a previously known result for p = 1, for which there is no logarithmic correction, to a much more general setting.

The goal of this study was to attempt to develop a classification scheme that systematically related individual behavior, interpersonal behavior, and group interactions for the purpose of using the resulting classification scheme to evaluate theories of group development proposed by Bion, Bennis and Shepard, Bales, and Tuckman and Jensen. It was assumed that theorists' presuppositions about the structure of groups might influence their theories. Using a qualitative process of analysis, a structural classification scheme (SCS) was developed based upon transformative and generative rules, utilizing the General System Theory subsystem process of self-regulated boundary operations. The SCS protocol was employed to categorize and compare the theories of group development proposed by Bion, Bennis and Shepard, Bales, and Tuckman and Jensen. The resulting categorization of theories indicated that relationships existed among and between a group's structural properties, the complexity and type of communication connections among and between group members, and the size of the group. In addition, a common structural relationship was demonstrated to exist among and between individual, dyadic, and triadic group forms. A similar structural relationship was also speculated to exist between groups of any size. It was concluded that a structural approach to groups may offer insight to group leaders and members in recognizing and creating alternative frameworks that best fit a group's structure to its task. This approach may have broad implications in that it suggests that group goals might best be considered before the structure of the group is determined. In addition, a structural approach was also speculated to be an emotionally neutral alternative method of discussing individual and group behavior.

This thesis provides an analysis of video recordings and written observations of four preschool-aged children as they spontaneously explored art materials within a group setting. The focus of analysis is the extent to which subjects interacted with other children and adults during art material use, and the effect of interaction on the subjects' uses of materials. For each subject, data are categorized and presented according to location, type, and approximate length of activity; presence or absence of others; and types of interactive behavior: watching, verbal interaction; imitation; and distraction from the activity. Descriptive passages are presented which detail specific episodes of interaction, and behaviors of adults interacting with subjects are also described. The conclusions argue for heightened awareness of social interaction as a factor in children's art experiences.

Annotation:
The concept of causation is essential to ascribing moral and legal responsibility since the only way an agent can make a difference in the world is through her acts causing things to happen. Yet the extent and manner in which the complex features of causation bear on responsibility ascriptions remain unclear. I present an analysis of four aspects of causation which yields new insights into different properties of responsibility and offers increased plausibility to certain moral views. Chapter I examines the realist assumption that causation is an objective and mind-independent relation between space-time located relata – a postulate meant to provide moral assessment with a naturalistic basis and make moral properties continuous with a scientific view of the world. I argue that such a realist stance is problematic, and by extension so are the views seeking to tie responsibility attributions to an objective relation. Chapter II combines the context sensitivity of causal claims with the plausible idea that responsibility ascriptions rest on the assessment of causal sequences relating agents and consequences. I argue that taking context sensitivity seriously compels us to face a choice between moral contrastivism and a mild version of scepticism, viz. responsibility is not impossible, but ultimately difficult to identify with confidence. I show why the latter view is preferable. Chapter III explores the concern that group agents would causally (and morally) overdetermine the effects already caused by their constituent individuals. I argue that non-reductive views of agency and responsibility lack a coherent causal story about how group agents impact the world as relatively independent entities. I explain the practical importance of higher-order entities and suggest a fictionalist stance towards group agency talk. Chapter IV analyses the puzzle of effect selection – if causes have infinitely many effects, but only one or a few are mentioned in causal claims, what determines their selection from the complete set of consequents? I argue that the criteria governing the difference between effects and by-products lack clarity and stability. I use the concerns about appropriate effect selection to formulate an epistemic argument against consequentialism.

AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Jacqueline Marie Wilcox, for the Master of Science degree in COMMUNITY NUTRITION, presented on October 19,2012, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: HOW FATHERS AFFECT BODY IMAGE PERCEPTION IN THEIR SONS:A COMPARISON OF FOUR AGE GROUPS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Sara Long Roth This study examines the role a father or male role model plays in affecting his son's body image perception via comments and feedback. A cross-sectional study design was conducted to examine 396 men who ranged in age from 18-92 years old. Men who participated in this study were evaluated as a whole as well as four different age groups (18-31, 32-47, 48-66, 67+). Results indicate most men did not receive feedback from their fathers in regard to altering their muscularity or to gain or lose weight. Participants who received feedback reported positive paternal comments about body shape, weight and muscularity. Men aged 18-31 received more positive paternal feedback than any other age group. Positive body image perception was significantly associated with body mass index and high self-esteem. Results of this study suggest other social factors may be connected with negative body image perception.

This ethnography explores the underground art world in Portland, Oregon by showing how a Portland area artist collective, Oregon Painting Society, navigates their art world. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a short latent content analysis triangulate data to show the features and values of the underground art world. Using Becker's concept of art worlds, I show how artists working outside of a traditional art career in a commercial gallery system do their work by exploring how Portland's art world is structured and sustained. I find that group work, cooperation, and resource sharing in a vibrant neighborhood based social network enables artists to substitute resources usually provided by gallery representation and sustain their ability to make artwork without financial support. This is a network that rejects the competitive structure of the commercial system and runs more smoothly the more artists participate in it. I also explore the reasons for Portland's particular ability to support this kind of environment, citing geographic proximity to other art cities, DIY cultural roots, neighborhood structure, affordable city amenities, and a creative class population.

The significance of agriculture to future generations is unparalleled. The United Nations projects the global population to swell to 9.75 billion people by 2050, and to proliferate to 11.2 billion by 2100. The non-agricultural population has little to no understanding or comprehension of the complexities of sustaining a viable agricultural system. Agricultural literacy is an area often unseen and rarely discussed outside specific agricultural disciplines. Society does not view agriculture as being important, yet it is important that society be properly educated on issues in order to reach well-informed decisions and render prudent choices that impact the world around them. Illinois ranks fourth in the nation for agricultural productivity, yet the agricultural literacy of its elementary students is unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the agricultural knowledge of selected Illinois classrooms of public elementary school students in kindergarten through fifth grades that employ Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) methods and materials. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design, using a pretest and a posttest, was utilized to study. A Solomon Four-Group design analysis was used to determine if pretest sensitization, or test reactivity effect, existed in this study. The study found that AITC treatment and control group students possessed some agricultural knowledge regarding the five thematic areas of the Food and Fiber Systems Literacy (FSSL) Framework. The kindergarten through first grade post mean scores by treatment and theme indicated the treatment group answered 77.89 percent of the questions correctly and the control group answered 72.55 percent correctly. The treatment and control groups were most knowledgeable about Theme 5 (Food, Nutrition and Health) followed by Theme 4 (Business and Economics), with the treatment group being more knowledgeable about Theme 1 (Understanding Food and Fiber Systems), while the control group was more knowledgeable about Theme 3 (Science, Technology and Environment). The treatment and control groups were least knowledgeable about Theme 2 (History, Geography and Culture). The second through third grade post mean scores by treatment and theme indicated the treatment group answered 75.05 percent of the questions correctly and the control group answered 74.07 percent correctly. The treatment group was most knowledgeable about Theme 3 (Science, Technology and Environment) followed by Theme 1 (Understanding Food and Fiber Systems) and Theme 5 (Food, Nutrition and Health). The control group was most knowledgeable about Theme 1 (Understanding Food and Fiber Systems) followed by Theme 3 (Science, Technology and Environment) and Theme 4 (Business and Economics). Annotation:
This research builds on previous studies that have documented evidence of Professor Anna Craft’s concept of ‘Possibility Thinking’ (PT) as at the heart of creativity which involves children transitioning from ‘what is this?’ to ‘what can I or we do with this?’ as well as imagining ‘as if’ they were in a different role. My thesis titled “Communicating Possibilities” examines English nursery children's emergent creativity, exploring the three to four-year-old child as an artistic communicator and possibility thinker through a case study approach situated in one primary school in South West England. Three main research questions were posed concerning the ‘what, how, and why’ of creativity when children communicated through art; as well as exploring the nurturing role of others, and identity manifest through voice and learning experience. This doctoral study is essentially interpretivist in nature seeking to explain how people make sense of their social worlds, and is an exploration framed by culturally negotiated, shared meanings, and complex social relations. Data was collected over one school year, in three nine-week research phases by the following ethnographic methods: naturalistic observations; researcher diary; children’s creative journals; and practitioner interviews. These methods were repeated for each phase. Inductive and deductive data analysis was conducted. Undertaken over time as the project unfolded, a grounded theory approach was applied in total to 27 episodes. Micro event analysis of creative behaviours in action and narrative discourses of two kinds: peer-to-peer, and child-to-adult (teacher, early years practitioner, and my researcher dialogue) revealed four broad critical themes: Observing and documenting children’s creativity; What children can do together- recognising differences; Pedagogy of possibilities- developing a role; and The value of artistic communication in the nursery classroom. Each is discussed in terms of the key implications these themes hold for theory, policy, and early years practice.

The study group focused on understanding and implementing the Standards for Effective Pedagogy, principles for effective teaching that have been described by the Center for Research on Education, Diversity and Excellence (CREDE). Teachers were videotaped at the beginning and end of the school year while teaching in the classroom and during fieldwork. The videotapes were analyzed to determine the extent to which instruction reflected enactment of the Standards. Teachers were interviewed at the beginning and the end of the school year about their classroom practices and teaching philosophy and asked to maintain teaching journals relating to implementation of the Standards. Results indicate that the teachers' with the most and least teaching experience changed the most throughout the year.

Piling is expensive but often necessary when building large structures, for example bridges. Some pile types, such as steel core piles, are very costly and it is therefore of great interest to keep the number piles in a pile group to a minimum. This thesis deals with optimization of pile groups with respect to placement, batter and angle of rotation in order to minimize the number of piles. A program has been developed, where two optimization algorithms named Genetic Algorithm and Direct Search, and four objective functions have been used. These have been tested and compared to find the most suitable for pile group optimization. Three real cases, two bridge supports and one culvert, have been studied, using the program.  It has been difficult to draw any clear conclusions since the results have been ambiguous. This is probably because only three cases have been tested and the results are very problemdependent. The outcome depends, for example, on the starting guess and settings for the optimization. However, the results show that the Genetic Algorithm is somewhat more robust in its ability to remove piles than Direct Search and is therefore to prefer in pile group optimization.

Compassion is one of the fundamental experiences which signify human existence. Person perception is the constructive process with which we form an opinion or judgment of another person. Two experiments (N =277) were conducted in this study. Experiment 1 examined the effects of a mindfulness meditation on compassion in a large sample of young adults. Participants (n =76) were randomly assigned to three groups. Participants in group 1 received the mindfulness meditation, group 2 received an alternate version of the mindfulness meditation (self-focus only), and participants in group 3 were asked to complete an attention task and read a geological text. It was hypothesized that mindfulness meditation is significantly associated with the experience of compassion. Results showed that participants in the experimental group 1 experienced significantly higher levels of compassion compared to participants in the control group 3. The participants in group 2 were not different from experimental group 1 or from control group 3. Gender differences in the effects of meditation on compassion were explored. Different measures yielded conflicting evidence for gender differences in experienced compassion. For the second experiment a Solomon four-group experimental design was employed to examine the possible effects of compassion on person perception. Participants (n = 201) were randomly assigned to 4 groups. The effect of pretesting impression formation on posttest performance was investigated. It was hypothesized that compassion has a significant effect on impression formation. The Stouffer's z -method was used to investigate this effect. Results indicated that participants in the experimental groups after completing a mindfulness meditation rated a target person significantly more favorable, compared to participants in the control groups. Results also indicated that pretest had no significant effect on post-test ratings of the impression formation task. Transcendental applications for the inducement and experience of compassion in psychotherapy and the role of compassion in human society are considered. Limitations of this study are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.

In Mexico there are officially 1.8 million orphaned children, without counting non-orphaned children deprived of family, who also need care; of these, only 657,000 are living in 703 orphanages. Mexico's government invests less than 2% of its budget toward protection of children. There is a lack of substantive research or official assessment of orphanages. According to the scant research found, the children's human rights most frequently violated in Mexican orphanages are the rights to nutrition and health care, to be protected from further victimization, to free expression and participation, and to not be exploited. This study was carried out through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with the manager and five staff members of a respected orphanage in Mexico. It aimed to determine how they attempt to fulfill the aforementioned rights, and how their work relates to six prerequisites for efficient group-care formulated by Wolins after his vast research on the matter. Results indicate that the staff members of this orphanage view their work as spirituality in action, becoming the children's family, caring for their health through special vegetarian nutrition. They teach the children that they are the masters of their own lives and happiness, and not to see themselves as victims. From results I also suggest well supervised facilities, coupling between staff and professionals to screen children's health; a vegetarian diet based on scientific research; children's participation in rules, learning about, from and for their human rights and the idea of children being masters of their life and happiness.

Annotation:
My dissertation focuses on the existence of metrics of non-positive curvature for the simplicial complexes constructed recently by Tom Brady and Daan Krammer for the braid groups and other Artin groups of finite type. In particular, for each Artin group of finite type, there is a recently constructed finite simplicial Eilenberg-Mac Lane space known as its Brady-Krammer complex. The Brady-Krammer complexes are highly symmetric objects. Prior work on the relationship between the Brady-Krammer complexes and the theory of CAT(0)spaces has produced some positive results in low-dimensions. More specifically, the Brady-Krammer complexes of dimension at most 3 have been shown to support piecewise Euclidean metrics of non-positive curvature. Similarly, the 4dimensional Brady-Krammer complexes of type A4 and type B4 also support such metrics. In every instance, the metrics assigned respect all of the symmetries alluded to above. The main results of my dissertation show that this pattern does not extend to the Brady-Krammer complexes of type F4 and D4. These are the first negative results known about the curvature of these Brady-Krammer complexes. The proofs of my main theorems involve a combination of combinatorial results and computer calculations. These negative results are particularly striking since Ruth Charney, John Meier and Kim Whittlesey have shown that a particular complex closely related to each Brady-Krammer complex admits an asymmetric metric satisfying a weak version of non-positive curvature. Thus, one corollary of my results is that the weak asymmetric version of a CAT(0) metric (initially defined by Mladen Bestvina) is strictly weaker than the traditional version.

Annotation:
In this thesis we consider the computation of integral closures in cyclic Galois extensions of global function fields and the determination of Galois groups of polynomials over global function fields. The development of methods to efficiently compute integral closures and Galois groups are listed as two of the four most important tasks of number theory considered by Zassenhaus. We describe an algorithm each for computing integral closures specifically for Kummer, Artin--Schreier and Artin--Schreier--Witt extensions. These algorithms are more efficient than previous algorithms because they compute a global (pseudo) basis for such orders, in most cases without using a normal form computation. For Artin--Schreier--Witt extensions where the normal form computation may be necessary we attempt to minimise the number of pseudo generators which are input to the normal form. These integral closure algorithms for cyclic extensions can lead to constructing Goppa codes, which can correct a large proportion of errors, more efficiently. The general algorithm we describe to compute Galois groups is an extension of the algorithm of Fieker and Klueners to polynomials over function fields of characteristic p. This algorithm has no restrictions on the degrees of the polynomials it can compute Galois groups for. Previous algorithms have been restricted to polynomials of degree at most 23. Characteristic 2 presents additional challenges as we need to adjust our use of invariants because some invariants do not work in characteristic 2 as they do in other characteristics. We also describe how this algorithm can be used to compute Galois groups of reducible polynomials, including those over function fields of characteristic p. All of the algorithms described in this thesis have been implemented by the author in the Magma Computer Algebra System and perform effectively as is shown by a number of examples and a collection of timings.

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Consumer Sciences: Food and Nutrition in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013
Child undernutrition is the outcome of numerous complex and interrelated factors. It is considered a worldwide health concern, also in Botswana. Undernourished infants are especially vulnerable to develop nutritional deficiencies and diseases. Tsabana was developed as a weaning food to improve the diet quality of undernourished infants in Botswana but also as a dietary intervention product for the four-month- to five-year-old age group to improve the nutritional status of Batswana children. The study undertook a theoretical nutritional appraisal of Tsabana and assessed its acceptance and use in rural districts of Botswana. A quantitative approach that incorporated a survey was used as the research design for the study. A pre-tested questionnaire consisting of close-ended questions in the multiple choice format was used to collect the data on the field acceptance and use of Tsabana. The questionnaire was completed by 105 caregivers of infants aged six to 36 months old visiting the selected clinics with the research sites the Ngamiland, North East, Central and Kweneng rural districts. The energy, macro- and micronutrient content adequacy of Tsabana was compared to the Codex Alimentarius Standard for Processed Cereal-based Foods for Infants and Young Children (Codex Standard 074) and the Proposed Nutrient Composition for Fortified Complementary Foods (PNCFCF). Sorghum and soya are the two major ingredients of Tsabana which contribute to its protein and energy provision. The nutrient appraisal revealed that the level of energy provided by Tsabana is more than the specified Codex Alimentarius Standard composition but slightly less than the PNCFCF specified range, whereas the protein level is within the specified ranges as put forward by both the Codex composition and the PNCFCF, respectively. The results further revealed that in comparison to the PNCFCF the content of vitamins A, E, C and pyridoxine, zinc, iodine and iron were less than the specified ranges. The content of vitamins A and D met the compositional guidelines of the Codex Alimentarius Standard. The micronutrient provision of Tsabana in relation to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended nutrient intakes was mostly adequate except for pyridoxine which was inadequately provided for both seven- to 18-month-old (33% provision) and one- to three-year-old (52% provision) infants at the daily rations of 75 gram (g) and 200 g powder respectively. Some minerals also were provided at inadequate amounts, e.g. iodine at a daily provision of 42% as well as iron at 26% for seven- to 12-month-old and 12- to 18-month-old infants both provided at a daily ration of 75 g Tsabana powder. Zinc was only provided at 19% of the WHO recommended intake for seven- to 12-month-old and 14.8% for 12- to 18-month-old infants. As with the absence of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, the minerals selenium and copper are not provided by Tsabana. The micronutrient fortification compounds used in Tsabana for the mineral and vitamin additions as vitamin A palmitate, cholecalciferol, vitamin E acetate, calcium pantothenate, carbonate and tri-calcium phosphate (ratio 1:18:482), zinc sulphate and potassium iodate are readily bioavailable, but not the vitamin A and vitamin E compounds used. The iron fortificant used is not stipulated on the Tsabana package. The field survey results revealed that Tsabana was well accepted by the infants as perceived by their caregivers as the majority indicated that Tsabana was enjoyed (80%) and that it tasted nice (71.4%). The majority (78.1%) of the caregivers also indicated that the wellbeing of the infants improved on receiving Tsabana. Most (51.4%) of them also knew that Tsabana is more nutritious than other cooked porridges. Tsabana though was not used properly as most of the caregivers fed Tsabana to the infant only once a day (60.9%) instead of two to three times (for infants six- to 18-month-olds) and did not use enough water (3½ cups) (76.2%) to cook one feeding of Tsabana as stipulated on the Tsabana package. The product use factors, which include the number of daily Tsabana feedings provided, the addition of sugar to the cooked Tsabana, the amount of water used to cook one feeding of Tsabana and the cooking period of one feeding were the factors significantly (p < 0.05) linked to the perceived infant acceptance of Tsabana. The number of daily Tsabana feedings was linked to the perceived enjoyment of Tsabana (p < 0.05) and its perceived texture (p < 0.05) and colour (p < 0.05) acceptance. While the addition of sugar to the cooked Tsabana was linked to its perceived enjoyment (p < 0.05), the amount of water used to its perceived taste acceptance (p < 0.05) and the cooking period of one feeding to its perceived colour acceptance (p < 0.05). For instance, more caregivers in relation to the enjoyment of Tsabana and its colour and texture acceptance who perceived it not to be enjoyed and not having a nice colour or texture, indicated not to feed it daily in comparison to caregivers who perceived that Tsabana was enjoyed by the infants and that it had a nice colour and texture. The caregiver perceived infant wellbeing improvement through the provision of Tsabana and the perceived difference between Tsabana and other cooked porridges were the only two clinic-related factors which significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the infant acceptance of Tsabana as perceived by the caregivers. For instance, while the majority (86.2%, 84.8% and 80%, respectively) of the caregivers who perceived the infant taste acceptance of Tsabana as very nice, nice or acceptable indicated that providing Tsabana to the infant improved the infant’s wellbeing, the majority (80%) who perceived it as not tasting nice indicated that providing Tsabana to the infant had not improved the infant’s wellbeing. More than half of the caregivers who perceived the infant texture acceptance of Tsabana as acceptable (59.4%) or nice (56.8%) indicated that Tsabana provides more nutrition to the infant. However, less than half (46.2%) of the caregivers who perceived the texture of Tsabana as not nice indicated that it provides more nutrition to the infant. The caregiver education level was the only demographic factor that significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the acceptance of Tsabana. The majority (90.3%) of the caregivers who attained a secondary education level (form 1 to form 4) and higher, perceived the infant texture acceptance of Tsabana as nice, acceptable or not nice. In contrast, the majority who perceived the texture acceptance as very nice attained either no schooling/standard one to seven (73.9%) and not a secondary level or higher (26.1%). It could be speculated that caregivers who attained a higher education level may be more critical of such attributes such as the texture acceptance of Tsabana. Most (59%) of the caregivers indicated that they did not receive any information regarding Tsabana from the clinic personnel. Caregiver education on Tsabana and infant nutrition will impart sufficient knowledge and skills to prepare, store and adequately feed Tsabana to their infants as well as provide a variety of foods in adequate amounts to contribute to their optimal growth and development. This is a vital undertaking as it was evident from the study that most of the factors that influenced the acceptance of Tsabana were the product use factors. The study additionally found that foods such as meat, poultry and fish, as well as fruit and vegetables, which should be included in the daily dietary provision, were provided to most of the study infants on a weekly basis only.

Annotation:
Opsonophagocytic killing assays (OPKA) are routinely used for the quantification of bactericidal antibodies against Gram-positive bacteria in clinical trial samples. The OPKA readout, the titer, is traditionally estimated using non-linear dose-response regressions as the highest serum dilution yielding a predefined threshold level of bacterial killing. Therefore, these titers depend on a specific killing threshold value and on a specific dose-response model. This thesis describes a novel OPKA titer definition, the threshold free titer, which preserves biological interpretability whilst not depending on any killing threshold. First, a model-free version of this titer is presented and shown to be more precise than the traditional threshold-based titers when using simulated and experimental group B Streptococcus (GBS) OPKA experimental data. Second, a model-based threshold-free titer is introduced to automatically take into account the potential saturation of the OPKA killing curve. The posterior distributions of threshold-based and threshold-free titers is derived for each analysed sample using importance sampling embedded within a Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler of the coefficients of a 4PL logistic dose-response model. The posterior precision of threshold-free titers is again shown to be higher than that of threshold-based titers. The biological interpretability and operational characteristics demonstrated here indicate that threshold-free titers can substantially improve the routine analysis of OPKA experimental and clinical data.

This paper is the final product of the Master of Music course – Performance of Musical Double Bass, Graduate School of Music of the Federal University of Goiás and is divided into two parts. Part A: artistic production which includes two recitals with program related to the developed research and there are also mandatory for the conclusion of the course, and Part B: an scholar paper. The final recital has works that highlight chamber music and the Double Bass, and integrates different instrumental combinations of solo works, with emphasis on Brazilian popular music. The recital program is composed of arrangements that addresses the performance of instrument genres such as Milonga, the Chacarera and Chamamé, and other genres of Brazilian popular music like samba. The scientific article deals with the use of arrangements for chamber music with bass in popular Brazilian works. It presents alternatives for expanding the Brazilian popular chamber repertoire, through the discussion of expressive/technical resources applied to bass arrangements for various instrumental combinations. The main objective was to conduct a study on the use of arrangements for chamber groups with bass, demonstrating possibilities for increasing the repertoire and teaching materials. The methodological process was based on the literature review of the performance of the instrument in genres of popular music, particularly jazz, as well as chamber music and the main teaching methods used in the country. For that the use of technical resources from these two musical universes was discussed, applied in works of Brazilian popular music. The study sought to demonstrate that the use of arrangements of Brazilian popular music for chamber groups can serve as an alternative to expanding the repertoire and didactic material for teaching the instrument the bass.

This present work has as objective to analyze the interpretation of the syntactic and semantic meaning performed by third graders in the nominal groups (NGs) with attributive adjectives in the English language in a text of the final exam in the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) discipline. The corpus is made up of 30 exams of two classes from a third grade institution of the biomedical area, corresponding to the basic and advanced levels of the second term in 2006. The text has 24 NGs of different lexical content, a total of 27 NGs in the whole text summing up to 810 analyzed occurrences. The analysis is carried out at the morphologic, syntactic and semantic levels using as theoretical background the traditional and functional grammars (QUIRK et al, 1985; CELSE-MURCIA et al, 1998; TUCKER, 1998), in their semantic aspects, the Semantics (FRAWLEY, 1992) and the Cognitive Linguistics (TAYLOR, 2002). We concluded that the main difficulties were due to the lack of vocabulary and to the use of mother tongue strategies instead of using the top-down strategies for reading a text in English to compensate this gap. We also observed that even when the vocabulary was known, there were difficulties in establishing the semantic and syntactic relations between modifier and noun head. We suggested improvements for the teaching of reading English texts at the third grade grounded in the obtained results such as a more comprehensive study of the several different morphologic and syntactic structures of the NGs with premodifiers and their semantic consequences, an approach of the morphologic, syntactic and semantic aspects of the NGs and the use of both top-down and bottom-up strategies when reading a NG in the English language

If the theatre is a place where a language in which the poet naturally belongs is created, we cannot avoid noting that the dramatist of the 2000's, paradoxically, is finding it hard to locate his place in the theatre and in the society of his time. Faced with institutional lukewarm support, with a distrusting public and a general lack of understanding of their role, the dramatists of today are trying to make their voices heard, and do not hesitate to demand that public bodies support their rights. This work proposes to concentrate on a cross-disciplinary examination of the place and function of the dramatist. It will do this by positing that he is a human entity that is evolving within a concrete artistic and social milieu. After tracing the trajectory of the authorial figure and the evolution of the concept of the dramatist in the history of the theatre, we will concentrate on the various aspects that today make up the identity of the author, that define his sociocultural profile, and that determine his place within the theatre. We will initially focus on the current image of the author seen as a combative artist and as an enlightened mediating figure who is close to his public. Then we will take on the question of the author's professional status. We will then concentrate on the recent phenomenon which presents dramatists as a collective group. The study of the concrete and physical place occupied today by authors in the theatre, and above all the analysis of the principal modes by which the author is integrated (directing-associating) and of the relationships he has with his partners in theatrical creativity (director, actor, public), these will allow us to measure the advantages and limits of his presence within the theatre. Likewise, the representation of his works in the context of subsidized theatre, in the context of private theatre and of amateur companies, the observance of the structures, associations, festivals and other demonstrations that put the dramatist at the centre of their projects, and finally the study of the different ways to propagate and valorize theatrical writing (command performances, resident artists, play reading committees, writing workshops), these will complete this research project. Given our determination to go beyond the world of theatre, we will also examine the current place occupied by the dramatist as a mediating, editorial and scholarly force. Finally, the study of the writing and the analysis of the creative processes of dramatists, followed by an overview of the esthetic and formal tendencies that characterize modern writing, will offer a new way of looking at the way in which authors view their art and will offer a new perspective on the ways in which they contribute to the renewal of dramatic writing

My dissertation analyzes the work of the artist group 3Nós3 (the name is a pun in Portuguese meaning "three knots/ we three"), who performed artistic actions in public space that they referred to as "urban interventions" on the streets of São Paulo from 1979 to 1982. These ranged from placing garbage bags over the heads of monumental sculptures to taping Xs across the doorways of art galleries along with signs reading "What is inside remains the same; what is outside expands." Within the context of the military regime that had ruled Brazil since 1964, the urban interventions targeted symbols of authority ranging from public sculpture to the art world establishment. My research focuses on one of the most noteworthy traits of the group's activities: their almost complete absence from the history of Brazilian art. In spite of the recent popularity on the international artistic circuit of contemporary Brazilian art with a performative edge (the artists Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark being the best examples of this type of work) the work of 3Nós3 has remained obscure, even within Brazil. The explanations for this lack of attention to 3Nós3 include the transitional political nature of the abertura period during which the interventions took place, the artists' own denial of traditional artistic circuits and involvement in youth subcultures, the ephemeral nature of the interventions themselves, and a lack of understanding of the reasons why the artists chose to work in public space, particularly in regard to the interventions' relationship with their audience. The goal of my dissertation is to argue for the inclusion of the interventions into the history of art without relying on arguments related to their quality, i.e. whether or not they constitute "good art." Rather, it is only through a detailed consideration of the specific cultural and political contexts in which the works occurred that they start to make sense. I conclude by examining the present-day conditions that could make the inclusion of 3Nós3 into larger international artistic movements such as street art and "the interventionists" (including Eduardo Srur and the Grupo Contra Filé, among others) possible.

Four strophes about limbs disability women’s warm-up process experience in the psychodrama group Wen-Chin, Wang This study uses the unstructured method to interview four limbs disability women about their experience participating in the psychodrama warm-up process. In this study, disability is defined based on the law of Taiwan. We combined two data analysis approaches: Gee’s Linguistic approach and Riessman’s (who was under the influence of Gee) poetic structural approach. Psychodrama group: those group is lead by the psychodrama director who must received at least 500 hours training from a T.E.P certified by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy. Warm-up process: At this study, we take a narrow sense to the warm up process, It is meaning at the group initial stage, under the leadership of the director, and in the end, the group selects a protagonist. From these four experiences we conclude: (1)When the director can comprehend the participant’s needs, she/he can encourage members with disability problems to explore themselves. The director must create free access for the disabled warm up actions and space for members with disabilities. (2) Disability participants need extra time to build up a sense of security in order to fit in new environments. For 3 participants at this study, “Guided fantasy” is not suitable at the early stage of group activity. They need support from the whole group so they may feel comfortable to express themselves. (3) In Chinese culture, Most people was familistic-oriented self , relationship-oriented self, and other-oriented self. People tend to be bound by self-discipline. They value expertise and leadership. In the multicultural context, when the director is a professional and carries a leader’s demeanor, members are more willing to express themselves.

The traditional newspaper industry in Taiwan has almost come to the end along with the termination of Min Shing Daily. In recent years, China has gradually opened up the media and telecom markets, foreign investment then have the chance to invest in China’s media industry in the future. Therefore, this study is focusing on the newspaper context of the subsidiaries of Shanghai Newspaper Industrial Group, in order to observe the differences on the same kind of newspaper, and to provide a reference for investing China’s Newspaper Industry in the future. This study is mainly taking the newspaper contexts from two newspaper industrial groups for comparison, to see how Shanghai Newspaper Group does the marketing segmentation in the same area, to observe its editing policy, and to analyse the resource allocation and competitive relationship of both groups. The objects of this study are chosen from two press groups, a parent newspaper and a subsidiary of each. They are “Xinmin News” and “Oriental Morning Post”, the subsidiaries of Wenhui-Xinmin United Press Group, and the “Jiefang Daily” and “Shanghai Morning Post”, the subsidiaries of Jeifang Daily Press Group. The research period is based on the “Two Conferences”, NPC & CPPCC, major party political conference held in China every year, which is from March 3rd, 2009 to March 18th, 2009. Observing 1129 pieces of news context of the four newspapers to see how the parent and subsidiary newspapers affect under the competitive markets, and what characters each of then have. This study also helps to understand the editing strategies and allocations of Shanghai Newspaper Group by in-depth interviews. This research has found that the four newspapers from Shanghai Newspaper Group have similar sections; however, their bodies are obviously very different. Each of them has their own characters and their own group of readers, and those are clearly shown in the news contexts. All four newspapers apply their resources in order to reduce the niche overlap and to increase the market segment, niche width, and of course, their own market advantages. Therefore, although plenty of newspapers exist in Shanghai, each of them builds up their own impressive image for their own special readers.

Let G = C2 × C2 be the Klein four group. Partial computations of the RO(G)- graded homotopy Mackey functors π⋆HF2 of the equivariant Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum corresponding to the constant Mackey functor F2 can be found in the literature. In particular, Holler-Kriz computed in [2] the complete additive structure of the top levels π⋆GHF2 of the Mackey functors, and Guillou-Yarnall in [3] computed the homotopy Mackey functors graded by multiples of the regular representation ρ, namely the integer graded homotopy Mackey functors π∗(ΣkρHF2) for each k ∈ Z. In this thesis, we discuss the multiplicative structure of the top level π⋆GHF2 and moreover give a complete algebraic description of the homotopy Mackey functors making up π⋆HF2 graded by all of RO(G). Finally, we use the Bockstein spectral sequence to compute the portion of π⋆GHZ graded by actual representations using our algebraic description of π⋆GHF2.

This study analyzes the revenue structure of tourist hotels from different four areas in Taiwan and use a quantitative method to describe the change of the individual positioning from the last 14 years. We use the Mann-Whitney U test to exam if there are significant difference shows in the food &; beverage (F&;B) revenue of these four areas. Besides, we also adopt the BCG matrix, which was develop by Boston Consulting Group in 1970 s, to depict the area-based change and dynamic positioning of single famous hotels from 2001 to 2014. Empirical results show that room and F&;B revenue grow with the time. The tourist hotels located in northern and southern regions equally focus on both two revenues and are also the most internationalized ones in four areas. The central region did not show any specific pattern of change. The tourist hotels in eastern region mainly rely on the room revenue. Additionally, not only the international tourist hotels but also the standard tourist hotels in four areas are getting more internationalized.

The purpose of this research is mainly to base on the growth group of joint action research on 〝primary school teacher mathematical professional development model with the school as the center〞to investigate what are the mathematical beliefs of four Grade 1 teachers supported by the new course teaching and also the effect on their beliefs due to the participation of this growth group. The main research questions are:1.What are the original mathematical belief before these four grade 1 teachers participated in this growth group? What are their performances on the new course, the mathematical self quality and mathematical teaching ? 2. After these four grade 1 teachers participated in the growth group , what are the changes in mathematical beliefs on the new course , mathematical self quality and mathematical teaching ? 3. After these four grade 1 teachers participated growth group , what is the relationship between teaching beliefs and actual teaching behavior ? This research adopted qualitative method such as individual interview and classroom observation , document analysis etc. to collect the information of the mathematical beliefs of these four teachers and all together there were the following main discoveries: 1. In regard to the changing process of the performance in the mathematical beliefs of these four teachers of this research , there are obvious differences before and after the participation in the growth group. 2. The change in the teachers'' mathematical beliefs is the main factor for the realization of the new course and the realization of the new course is to change teachers on their teaching method and teaching beliefs from〝teacher center〞 to 〝student center〞. 3. The participation in the mathematical growth group established by joint action research direction is to stimulate the dynamics for changes of beliefs of these four teachers. 4. There is existence of difference in the matching level between the mathematical beliefs and actual teaching behavior of these four teachers.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can cause balance and mobility deficits with activity and participation limitations. Repetitive Functional Task Practice (RFTP), currently best practice to promote recovery, is often not delivered at an adequate volume due to limited resources. This case series looked at the feasibility of treating community-dwelling people with ABI, in a group format, thus allowing economical, intense rehabilitation. Four participants attended for four weeks, three days/week, 4.25 hours/day. One-to-one and semi-supervised therapy was delivered with one therapist and one assistant. 89.51 minutes of RFTP and 134.82 minutes of total physical therapeutic activity was delivered per day. Participant satisfaction was good. All participants improved on some clinical measures. Three participants improved single and dual-task balance measures. This project established feasibility, allowed the formation of guiding principles for and supported the value of future research and development of this ABI Boot Camp model.
