The torque of the main drive system is one of the most important force and energy parameters of the rolling mill, and the strain type torque online telemetry system is a practical method for measuring torque parameters. The strain gauges and transmitters on the rotating shaft are driven by a high-frequency induction power system. Their installation, debugging, and maintenance are cumbersome, and their very low power transmission efficiency (PTE) has become a challenging problem for online telemetry systems. In this paper, a magnetic coupling resonant wireless power supply method is utilized to replace the high-frequency induction power supply. Through theoretical and experimental research, it is concluded that the magnetically coupled resonant wireless power supply method can realize long-distance power supply, overcoming many shortcomings of the high-frequency induction power supply system. In the laboratory, a maximum PTE of 83.7% is obtained for a transmission distance of 50 mm. Under the influence of environmental factors common for the transmission shaft of a rolling mill, the PTE decreases by 34%, but normal operation of the system can be achieved by adjusting the compensation capacitance. The proposed system provides a guarantee for a long-term stable power supply on the measured axis of a rolling mill torque online telemetry system.

Long stroke linear motor has an unparalleled advantage in the field of long-distance transport, transfer and electromagnetic launch system. The paper presents a primary segmented permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PS-PMLSM), which can solve the problems of the long stroke linear motor in excessive power dissipation, the difficulties of power supply. According to the motor structure characteristics and application background, the paper proposes four feasible strategies--a single inverter series alternating power supply (SISAP), a single inverter parallel alternating power supply (SIPAP), dual inverters alternating power supply (DIAP) and inter-segment optimal power supply (ISOP). Firstly, the article makes studies on those strategies from the economic cost, energy efficiency, the complexity of switching among the segments and the convenience of algorithm application by calculation and simulation. Secondly, the mathematics model of the motor and control system model is deduced from different strategies, respectively. Then, the available control method is derived from the analysis of these models and the motion characteristics. Finally, effects of performance are comparatively analyzed through the simulation.

In this thesis the relay device of data management is developed, realizing the management and sorted storing of the data of the collection devices of close-distance wireless receiving data, and sending the data to remote places through the GSM/GPRS network. Therefore the scattered data can be transmitted to computer analysis and management system over a long distance after centralized processing of scattered data and long-distance data monitoring and comprehensive analysis can be realized. High electric energy rates and the need to maintain special purpose buildings encourage engineers to develop autonomous energy supply systems.Methods: the co-authors have analyzed several types of autonomous power supply facilities and series of autonomous power supply units designated for the power supply to the production machinery installed as part of various economic and special-purpose facilities, located at a long distance from industrial sources of electric energy.Findings and discussion: the co-authors present an algorithm for the selection of the configuration of an autonomous power supply system. The co-authors employ the findings of their analysis to substantiate the choice of a solar power station as a supplementary source of energy used as part of hybrid power generation systems.Conclusion: the algorithm developed by the co-authors may be used to design an efficient autonomous power supply system comprising hybrid units.

With the widespread application of intelligent unmanned units and the development of wireless energy transmission technology, it has become an urgent requirement in the field of using wireless power transmission to extend the continuous working time of unmanned units. To improve the wireless transmission energy efficiency in practical application as much as possible based on the current development level of wireless transmission technology, this paper first enumerates and analyzes existing wireless energy supply methods and shows that microwave wireless energy transmission technology is most suitable in this study. Then, the necessity of power transmission relay in long-distance microwave wireless power transmission is discussed. Based on the idea of microwave energy relay transmission, the paper constructs a microwave wireless transmission link planning model which considers power relay and uses the evolutionary algorithm to solve the wireless transmission link planning model with two-layer optimization. Finally, the results show that, when the wireless transmission distance exceeds a certain threshold, adding relay nodes to the link can improve the energy transmission efficiency from the power supply node to the power receiving node.

This master thesis aimed to develop a prototype of a hardware platform which allowed digital communication as well as DC power to be transmitted over one pair of wires. The prototype was used as a pre-study for Axis Communications AB that wanted a bit rate high enough to transmit digital audio, as well as enough power to supply a set of speakers. The prototype included one circuit to send power and data (master), as well as two receivers (slaves). With this configuration data rates of up to 17 Mbps were achieved as well as an output power of 90 W from master. The data was transmitted on a RS-485 bus type, which was AC coupled to a 48 V DC bias. Because of the AC coupling, the bit stream needed to alternate, therefore Manchester encoded data, or similar, was recommended. The receiver cards included a buck converter to supply the circuits with a stable 5 V DC. The converters needed at least 10 V supply voltage to function, which gave a theoretical max range in cabling when accounting for voltage drop in the cables. For a 0.75 mm² power cord at max allowed current, this range was 500 metres per wire.

This diploma thesis deals with the influence of long fiber optic paths on the polarization state of light and their use for powering polarization sensors. The aim of the diploma thesis was to design the arrangement of optical fiber components so that the polarization properties of light at the end of the path are further usable for sensory purposes. Four partial measurements with a long path (in a laboratory setting, laying in the ground, on a curtain, under the influence of external influence) and one measurement without a path under the influence of external influence were designed. The overall measurement results demonstrate that for the functional power supply of long-distance sensor systems, an existing single-mode fiber can be used (laid by laying in the ground), into which a light source for a given sensor system would be multiplexed. In the discussion, all types of measurements are analyzed and compared with each other. Finally, the overall result is summarized and applications are described in which such a sensor system could be used.

A quarter of a century ago, Alvin Weinberg offered one of the most insightful— and unsettling—observations anyone has made about modern technology. Speaking of the decision to use nuclear power, the long-time director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory warned that society had made a “Faustian bargain.” On the one hand, he said, the atom offers us a nearly limitless supply of energy which is cheaper than that from oil or coal and which is nearly nonpolluting. But on the other hand, the risk from nuclear power plants and nuclear-waste disposal sites demands “both a vigilance and a longevity of our social institutions that we are quite unaccustomed to.” We cannot afford, he said, to treat nuclear power as casually as we do some of our other technological servants—coal-fired power plants, for instance—but must instead commit ourselves to maintaining a close and steady control over it. Although Weinberg’s predictions about the cost of nuclear power may now seem naive, the larger issue he raised is even more relevant today than twenty-five years ago: Where should society draw the line in making these Faustian technological bargains? With each decade, technology becomes more powerful and more unforgiving of mistakes. Since Weinberg’s speech, we have witnessed major accidents at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Bhopal, as well as the explosion of the Challenger and the wreck of the Exxon Valdez. And looking into the future, it’s easy to see new technological capabilities coming along that hold the potential for far greater disasters. In ten or twenty years, many of our computers and computer-controlled devices may be linked through a widespread network that dwarfs the current telecommunications system. A major breakdown like those that occasionally hit long-distance telephone systems could cost billions of dollars and perhaps kill some people, depending on what types of devices use the network. And if genetic engineering becomes a reality on a large scale, a mistake there could make the thalidomide debacle of the late 1950s and early 1960s look tame.

This chapter points out the persistence of early modern genres and technologies in turn-of-the-century markets for sexual depictions. It shows that existing ways of thinking about licentiousness among urban Chinese consumers, merchants, and law enforcement helped novel media content and forms take root in early twentieth-century China. The chapter focuses on the simultaneity of novel material developments and long-standing trends in the markets for and regulation of sexual representations. It also describes the distance between the letter of the law and its enforcement, arguing that grassroots law enforcement's definitions of transgressiveness directly, powerfully shaped what counted as pornographic. The chapter dissects the most dramatic example of Chinese early modern sexual culture's enduring power: its assimilation of the self-consciously modern genre of sexual science. Existing sexual discourse and print economies absorbed sexological treatises so that, in the eyes of buyers, sellers, producers, and police, sexology became difficult to separate from licentious xiaoshuo and lyric books. It then examines continuities and changes in the perceptions and lived experiences of those on the demand and supply sides of the market. Ultimately, the chapter discusses the case of Zhang Jingsheng's rebranding as “Dr. Sexology,” and the assimilation of sexology into existing markets and vocabularies for eroticism.

In order to increase the higher competition in low-power wireless network communication market, a high-performance and low-cost product is necessary to distinguish the difference with others. Through integrating the system performance with suitable L-shape impedance-match circuit assisting with some network analyzer, this target with a 2.4 GHz radio-frequency (RF) product in long-distance data transportation seems to be promisingly implemented. In short-distance data transportation, the ideal output-link transportation rate (∼ max. 54 Mb/sec) is slightly influenced by impedance mismatch between power amplifier (PA) and antenna port. However, it is tremendously reduced at long-distance condition and the transportation rate is decreased to ∼ 24 Mb/sec. Using the attenuator to attenuate the real input signal to –70dB to simulate the real signal transportation, the packet error rate (PER) is less than 10% at a physical sublayer service data unit (PSDU) length of 1000 bytes under the communication 802.11g spec. as the real transmission rate is 20 Mb/sec. If the impedance of the transmission line is shifted, the long-distance transportation rate will be reduced to, almost, 20 × 24 / 54 = 8.8 Mb/sec. The transportation performance is greatly deducted. With the delicate design and the feasible component arrangement, the impedance mismatch influencing the long-distance (∼ 100 m) data transportation is overcome and reduced to the acceptable range. In this investigation using 3.3 V power supply, we observe that the selection of electronic components with miniaturization is also an art to reduce the radiation side-effect.

LNG regasification process needs a considerable quantity of thermal energy that is usually obtained by cooling sea water or by burning a fraction of the evaporated natural gas. These systems, though offering low cost and high reliability, are thermodynamically inefficient: they require energy for water pumping or fuel to provide heat and do not exploit the physical exergy related to the initial conditions of LNG to produce mechanical work. The present paper aims to assess the performances of various gas turbine based cycles which use the LNG regasification process as a low temperature heat sink for power cycles. In particular it will focus on the following configurations: • Closed loop gas cycles • Gas-gas combined cycles • Combined gas-organic Rankine cycles Two different sendout pressure (70 and 30 bar, corresponding respectively to the supply of long-distance pipelines or power plants based on heavy-duty gas turbines) are considered. Their performances are calculated and proper effectiveness indexes (e.g. thermal and exergetic efficiency) are introduced to carry out a comprehensive comparison among the systems considered. A simple economical analysis completes the discussion.

There are potential offshore applications where renewable energy and more distributed power sources could supplement or replace costly equipment upgrades for additional power supply, or costly fuel operating costs. Renewable energy technologies can also be employed in lieu of expensive power umbilicals to provide power to subsea pumps for long distance tiebacks in deepwater. For example, power umbilicals alone required to provide 69kV to subsea pumps in deepwater could be upwards of $300MM for 100 mile long distance tie-backs. A renewable energy source, with storage, integrated into that system could significantly reduce both the CAPEX and OPEX costs. In 2013, Chevron performed an in-depth evaluation of a Renewable Energy plus Compressed Air Energy Storage and Regeneration system for a 2.6MW application. For the purpose of that study, a floating wind turbine in 365m water depth off the coast of Oregon was evaluated as the energy source as the base case. The system was found to be feasible with initial CAPEX costs replaced within 12 years of operations as compared to installation of a diesel power generation system and the requisite fuel required to run the equipment. This paper provides a description of the OCAES system, and discusses potential applications in support of the offshore oil and gas industry.

Natural gas is usually transferred to consumers through pipelines, which may cover distances of thousands of kilometers. In some cases, however, when the path of the pipelines crosses seas or countries where the politic situation does not ensure a continuous and reliable flow, other means of transportation are preferred. In these cases, the natural gas is liquefied and transported in tankers, which load the tanks at liquefaction plants and discharge them at regasification plants. This gives a considerable chance to differentiate supply sources and allows gas imports from producing countries that are otherwise inaccessible via pipeline. The aim of this paper is the study of systems, which carry out liquefied natural gas (LNG) vaporization using cogenerative solutions. The following configurations were studied in particular: • Gas-steam combined cycles; • Closed gas-gas combined cycles using three different working fluids. Two typical plant sizes and two gas pressure sendout levels (7.3 MPa for long distance pipeline networks and 2.5 MPa for terminals linked to power production plants with combined cycles) have been analyzed. The suggested solutions have been optimized, and performance calculated. The discussion is completed by a simplified economic analysis.

The shock waves generated by electrical explosion of wire (EEW) have been used for oil and gas exploitation in recent years. In order to discuss the characteristics of shock waves generated by underwater wire explosion, the experiment setup was build, which contains a high voltage power supply, a capacitor, a full-size designed electrodes and its support. The discharge part is put into a section of petroleum casing pipe. The shock waves were measured by a PCB blast pressure gauge, which is placed at a certain distance away from the wire core with flash installation and facing the center of perforation through the casing pipe. The results show that the energy deposition plays a crucial role in generating the shock waves. The peak pressure is mainly dependent on the vaporization of metal wire. The plasma channel discharge formed with a large energy deposition may enhance the shock waves. In frequency domain analysis, the shock wave has a wide-band frequencies range from 1 to 80 kHz. The strong shock waves play a main effect on the plug removal in the near wellbore area. Under a certain distance from the blast center, the shock waves with slow decay in time domain and frequency domain are able to stimulate the production layers in a long distance.
