Bonte, Marie. „Beyrouth, états de fête : géographie des loisirs nocturnes dans une ville post-conflit“. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017GREAH035.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis PhD thesis deals with Beirut’s nightscape and nightlife. These are narrowly defined as the spaces occupied by bars, pubs, and nightclubs as well as a range of practices and sociabilities ascribed to them. They bring a range of stakeholders concerned by the production and the regulation of nightlife together. In this research, I adopt a decentered point of view and subscribe to the recent field including the night into geographical studies. I focus on an analysis of the recreational uses of Beirut’s nightscape through the lens of Lebanon’s post-conflict situation, including moral, social and political challenges. This framework takes into account problematics linked to the night in the light of the post-conflict situation, which allows me to define a situation in which dynamics inherited from different war times are still present, merging with new practices and processes. The two-way relationship between nightlife and the post-conflict city means that the post-conflict situation shapes the offer, behaviors and representations. In return, Beirut’s nightscape is a scene where legacies, uncertainties and possibilities can be expressed and read. This study is based on qualitative research combining field observations and interviews. Beirut’s nightlife is analyzed through three approaches to the concept of space. First, the urban space made up of nightlife venues; second, the social space of relationships between stakeholders ; and third, the political space of claims and transgressions. These three levels are considered through the key concepts of field, world and ethos in both social and spatial terms

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe present study aims at exploring the role of the confessional communities in the constitution of the Lebanese contemporary society. This problematic issue is addressed in the three stages: first, it is a question of exploring the relations of confessional communities with each other; then, it appears necessary to examine the nature of the relation of the confessional community with the overall society; finally, it seems necessary to analyze the constitution of the confessional community as a group. So three aspects of study, aspects whose continuity imposes simultaneity of treatment. Since it is a study in anthropology of religion, the problem shall be tackled with the research instruments related to this discipline, with the field study and participating observation as a starting point. The two studied are local societies, or rather local groupings, which were formed, each, around a basic institution, an institution that is at the center of their religious life. From the Maronite side, the basic institution is the parish church of Saint Michael in Chyyah and the churches that are connected to it, a parish that is a part of the Maronite diocese of Beirut. From the shi‘ite side, the basic institution is the Al ‘Imamein El Hassanein mosque, in Haret Hreik, a district in Southern Suburb of Beirut. The importance of this mosque lies in the fact that it was once the venue for the teaching of great Ayatollāh Sayyid Mouhammad Houssein Fadlallāh. It is worth noting here the multiplicity of the material used for the study, each leading to an analytical presentation: observation of the daily life, religious celebrations, processions; Maronite and Shi‘ite religious speeches; speeches by speakers of the two communities

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation offers a glimpse into early 20th century Beirut’s musical life by unveiling the type of music that prevailed at the time, the famous singers, the places of singing. It follows the ways in which the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the arrival of the French mandate changed and affected entertainment and leisure in Beirut, by focusing on its evolving musical scene, as it manifested in changing places of consumption, sociality and the distribution of music as a new form of commodity. It does that by studying expert, lay and intellectual debates on music and music criticism in this period, as they emerged in in the press. Moreover, this dissertation looks at how new developments in technologies affected music at the beginning of the 20th century by focusing on how the evolution of the record industry imposed and produced new forms of expressions, of music, and new places of entertainment. A reading of how the social and political transformations in early 20th century Beirut affected and created new forms of entertainment, leisure, musical expressions and commodities allows us to understand the role of music in making a national identity and discourse in the newly established State of Greater Lebanon

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis work tackles the issue of sports in the Lebanese society knowing that Lebanon hosted the sixth edition of the Francophone Games in a period of political turmoil. Has there been any post-event fallout? How and why the sport is created in the collective imagination? Does it play a particular role? Is it used for political purposes, in order to achieve national cohesion or extend sectarian and political conflicts? The first part of our thesis decrypts, to a great extent, the mechanisms of the organization of the Francophone Games in Beirut. It will encompass the framework, context and some of the event component in details. The second part will cover the social practice of sports and the school as a place of transmission. It is structured around a survey conducted among a thousand Lebanese people. It will attempt to rebuild the array in order to provide answers. The third chapter proposes to put into perspective the collected data regarding sport events and social practice. Then we shall discuss the issues of structuring the Lebanese sport and sport nationalism

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe assassination of Rafic Hariri, February 14th 2005, is the founding event. A month later, March 14, the demonstration pro‐Hariri in Martyrs' Square, renamed Freedom Square, transform the public square into a public sphere. The question we are interested by is how different media broadcasted this sequence of events ; as to make Martyrs’ square a yearly meeting of all parties. Our target is to show under what conditions this place has been transformed, March 14th 2005, into a public space and to explore different ways that allowed reaching the target. Our perspective is not limited to Lebanese media, but extends to international media, which we suggest that they had an important role in the construction of this event. The paradox and novelty of this event is that the concept of public sphere is relatively foreign to the Lebanese scene. The contrast is that, the confessionality is recognized in Lebanon and even mentioned in the constitution, on opposition of the conception of public sphere based on the principle of secularism. To answer this question, we’ll try to show that the occupation of Martyrs’ square reveals the close link between religion and secularism, unlike the stereotypical representations that tend to oppose these two poles. A communicational approach highlight the relationship between these two poles
