This study analyzes customers’ online social communication to rate lodgings and tourist destinations. A practical methodology is proposed to analyze the online reputation of lodgings as well as the main concepts rated by customers in their online social communication process. To this end, an empirical study was carried out by analyzing the online opinions expressed by customers on the Booking.com tourist lodging website. Based on the information available, three new variables were created and analyzed that represent clearly defined concepts in the minds of consumers. This includes “service quality,” “perceived value,” and “added value.” This study shows that perceived value and service quality are concepts evaluated by customers that are able to differentiate between lodgings in tourist destinations. Therefore, the results show that the online social communication that takes place through this portal has the capacity to guide potential customers by differentiating between the services offered by lodging companies.

Online reputation is a strategic aspect of lodgings’ image and commercialization. Websites containing tourism reviews have increased their influence on customers’ decisions, leading to the effective management of Internet social media accounts. Customer evaluations of lodgings vary across websites because of differences in the scales used, the variables measured, and the reliability of opinions. The diverse information available on the Internet can produce communication problems in lodgings because the evaluations on online portals can differ. The objective of this paper is to propose an indicator to establish the rating of the online reputation balance, so that lodgings can determine the level of coherence of their communication and image on the Internet. One target for lodging community managers should be to converge different evaluations around a similar value that defines a coherent and real online reputation. The indicator proposed is tested on lodgings of distinct categories in different tourism destinations. Among the aims of the study is to try to provide a simple and practical method for directors to improve the management of hotel communication on the Internet. This is an issue for which research should propose methodologies because it is a new challenge for the competitiveness of accommodations.

In the last few years, the relationship between tourism and sustainability has been consolidated. In the context of rural tourism, this connection is even stronger given the environmental specificities and the natural framework of this type of tourism. To achieve sustainability behaviors, it is crucial that rural tourism lodgings communicate their essence, as well the products and experiences available for tourists. This because it is a common practice for visitors to look for more information on the internet about where they will be staying, before booking their tourist experience. The main objective of this study is the analysis of the information provided by rural tourism lodgings, through their websites, regarding sustainability issues. The territory selected for the development of this study is the Portuguese Viseu Dão Lafões Region, located in the center of Portugal. Based on other studies, the methodology includes a content analysis, conducted on 39 rural tourism lodging websites. The results show that some improvements are needed, to clarify and emphasize the message about sustainable practices, in these rural lodgings. Some practical recommendations are provided, that can be adapted to these rural tourism lodgings, or others.

Supported lodgings are an important means of achieving the successful rehabilitation and resettlement of the chronically mentally ill into the community (Anstee, 1978, 1985). In a survey of 15 psychiatric hospitals in England and Wales, it was estimated that 9.3% of the long-stay patients (i.e. in-patients from one to five years) under 65 years of age were ideally suited to less supervised accommodation outside the hospital. In Gloucestershire the Supported Lodging Scheme is provided by the Psychiatric Social Services Department. It was started to enable ‘new’ and ‘old’ long-stay patients at Coney Hill and Horton Road hospitals to be settled in the community. Now any psychiatric or mentally handicapped patient can also enter the scheme if appropriate.

Currently, lodgings’ competitiveness depends on pricing, based on the online reputation measured by quantitative scales of variables. The purpose of this article is to analyze the different prices set by lodgings by season in relation to the variables that measure their online reputation. This is an essential aspect in determining prices competitively in a constantly changing market. The study analyzes the offer of three tourist destinations (Gran Canaria and Tenerife in Spain and Agadir in Morocco) and online customer reviews on the quality of service, value, and added value obtained from Booking.com. Bivariate regressions with different functions were carried out to determine which one best matches these variables to the prices. The results show that added value has the greater relationship with prices. The cubic and quadratic functions have the best fit between quality of service and added value with regard to lodging prices. Based on the results obtained, it is possible to determine the most competitive prices lodgings can set depending on the quality of service and the added value offered to customers. To the extent that destinations from different countries are analyzed, the research reaches an international scope that is in line with the competitive reality of the tourism market.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the marketing actions developed for rural tourism lodgings and the effect of these actions on lodgings’ performance. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected with a questionnaire-based survey, addressing promoters of rural tourism supply in Portugal and were analysed using SPSS. Descriptive analysis was undertaken along with a cluster analysis aimed at identifying groups of suppliers according to the types marketing activities they carried out. Findings Results show that the majority of the suppliers are engaged in other professional activities, aside from running a tourist lodging. These “other activities” provide the bulk of lodging suppliers’ household income. Moreover, they dedicate very little of their time to managing the tourism lodging and develop few marketing activities. Despite this, there is a small group of lodging suppliers who, even though in minority, show a more entrepreneurial and professional attitude regarding marketing actions. They are correspondingly more successful and more satisfied with the performance of their business. Research limitations/implications A more qualitative in-depth case study approach with a systematic triangulation of findings from diverse sources and approaches might have permitted an even deeper understanding of some of the results, such as the reasons for the identified passivity of suppliers or their lack of marketing initiatives, as well as possible solutions to overcome these identified barriers. Originality/value This study is important, as there is little existing work connecting rural tourism and marketing. Apart from providing knowledge from theory, the empirical results indicate from a practical perspective some of the potential benefits of assuming a marketing perspective in rural tourism.

Over the last four decades there has been a substantial reduction in the number of psychiatric hospital beds. Alternative residential facilities in the community have been developed. These include staffed hostels, group homes and supportive lodgings providing bed and breakfast. While hostels and group homes are often integrated with psychiatric services and run by experienced staff, this may not be the case with the small privately run homes. Anstee (1978, 1985) described two supportive lodging schemes and suggested that such facilities were particularly helpful for people with schizophrenia. However, there has been little further research in this area even though supportive lodgings may constitute a significant proportion of long-stay residential facilities. We know little about the landladies, their background, training, experience and particularly the rewards and frustrations of their work. The extent of psychiatric morbidity and the overall burden of care for these landladies is also unknown. The aim of the present study was to gather information about the carers, the residents and the level of care provided in these facilities.

This article explores the guest‐host relationship in private lodging arrangements in the UK, a living arrangement that has increased dramatically in recent years in response to escalating housing costs. Utilising data from a UK study of diverse forms of shared housing, and situated within literature on critical hospitality, we first explore the spirit in which hospitality is offered by hosts and the importance of the financial transaction relative to other considerations, while also highlighting the experiences of hosts who positively embrace shared living. We then explore the limits of hospitality in private lodgings, foregrounding the experiences of more reluctant hosts, and highlighting how hospitality can easily mutate into hostility. We conclude that the ambivalent nature of the home space that is experienced in private lodgings creates a situation where often neither host nor guest truly feels ‘at home’ while living in the presence of the other, although the extent to which this is seen as problematic depends very much on the orientation of those involved to more communal ways of living and their willingness to compromise in order to achieve a balance between ‘yours’ and ‘mine’.

Lodging and boarding were well-established housing options which played an important economic and social role in early twentieth-century cities, yet there has been little academic study of the phenomenon in an Irish context. For many people arriving to Dublin in search of work, as well as for adults who were not in a position to establish a separate household, lodging was an important accommodation choice. Offering lodgings was also economically beneficial to householders. Drawing on a range of sources, including census returns, city electoral rolls, newspaper and other archival sources, this article will examine the demographic and socio-economic profile of lodgers and the households in which they resided in Dublin in the early twentieth century. A wide variety of arrangements and durations of lodging is revealed for the period centred on the 1911 census, suggesting that this form of accommodation appealed to a diverse range of individuals due to their economic or family circumstances, or need for mobility.

A forgotten aspect of Henry viii’s architectural patronage and of the panoply of early modern European warfare is that of the timber lodging. Through two key case studies, this paper explores King Henry viii’s timber lodgings and demonstrates that not only did they form an important class of ephemeral architecture that successfully employed innovative technologies to make such structures portable for military campaigns, they were also used in conjunction with the royal tents to provide comfortable and secure battlefield accommodation for the king. The paper recreates their construction, functions, symbolism and elaborate appearance, revealing that the earlier timber lodging comprised a two-chambered wooden building which was painted externally to resemble brickwork and which was used at the sieges of Thérouanne and Tournai in 1513, while the later timber lodging was used at the siege of Boulogne in 1544. Through a close analysis of the surviving accounts for the making of the 1544 structure, the article demonstrates that it was an extravagant and architecturally pretentious building that combined the martial imagery of late medieval Gothic with refined touches of classicism. The paper also shows that the lodging used in 1544 is both recorded in the posthumous 1547 inventory of Henry viii’s possessions and appears in the engravings of the Cowdray House murals, held by the Society of Antiquaries of London.

In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with the actors who are managers of lodgings and travel agents, transportation business owners, tour guides, and government organizations. This study first reveals the stakeholders involved in the GVC are the community, government, and private companies. It also confirms the tourist type that is dominated by organized mass tourists. Secondly, SWOT analysis was used to describe the situation of the lodging and transportation sectors. Infrastructure is the main concern of transportation, while for accommodations, there are wide ranges of resorts and homestays with the majority managed by the local community. In addition, technology improvement also contributes to the ease of information access, facilities, and tourism product purchase. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the influence that the usage of the Airbnb’s platform has had on hotel occupancy in Mexico during 2007- 2018 period. The Hotel Classification System is considered to know if there are differences in this influence, according to hotels’ category. To obtain the information from Airbnb, an application was created that extracted the public information of each lodging published on the website. Results were estimated by using the panel data econometric methodology, showing that the only negative impact the usage of Airbnb has on hotel occupancy is in 4-star hotels, and that an increase in the price of Airbnb’s lodgings produces a rise in hotel occupancy. In other hotel categories there is no negative effect. An implication is that the usage of platforms like the one studied can be moderately regulated in Mexico.

Studies show that senior high school students living in lodgings (away from home) when attending high school are vulnerable to stress and mental health problems. Moving away from home at the age of 15–16 is a transition that might affect adolescents’ well-being. The aim of this study is to explore the experience of living in lodgings during senior high school. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 Norwegian lodgers of both genders between the ages of 16–18. Interviews were analyzed according to a phenomenological hermeneutical approach. Four main themes were identified: (a) striving between controlling time and being controlled by time, (b) striving between finding comfort in being alone and feeling left alone, (c) striving between being independent and being taken care of, and (d) striving between leaving and finding home. The findings illuminate many challenges experienced by lodgers. A raised awareness and preventive initiatives from school nurses are recommended.

George Gissing was obsessed with the question of ‘home’, in his own restless mobility as well as that of his characters, whose domestic circumstances he invariably enumerated in detail. Gissing's Born in Exile moves between real and fictional locations in London, Exeter, and the industrial north of England, but also between a variety of lodgings, chambers, and houses which accommodate, constrain, and only occasionally liberate their occupants. Their contradictory and volatile attitudes to these ‘homes’ parallel Gissing's unstable reactions to his own lodgings and highlight the relative nature of locations between town and country as well as differences in perception of the same physical surroundings. Descriptions of and debates about ‘home’ in Born in Exile provide a prelude to Gissing's later, more dogmatic pronouncements in The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft, also penned – in fiction – from the perspective of the country around Exeter.

ABSTRACTThe popular image, if any, related to lodging in industrial and urban society is one of young male lodgers and female landladies. The aim of this article is to discuss the identity of lodgers and landlords/ladies in gender, age and social perspective. Can we find evidence for proximity in origin, gender and social class between those who looked for and those who provided lodgings? While the middle classes saw lodging as a social evil, were their fears of moral and hygienic degradation realistic? Was keeping lodgers a way of fleecing vulnerable migrants and forcing them into a life of squalor? Or is it possible that the people who acquired an extra room, for a bit of income, or squeezed in an extra bed, were at the mercy of builders and slum landlords with multiple houses? We should perhaps remind ourselves that the ultimate power of control of building quality and flat size lay in the hands of the social class that was pointing its finger at those at the bottom of the social ladder. Through the combination of surveys and census data with oral history collections from early twentieth-century Finland a narrative is constructed of the life as a lodger or landlord/landlady of the working class, demonstrating networks of friendship and mutual support, as well as systems of lodging that were simple economic arrangements for the survival of both parties.

Price is fundamental in the competitive strategy of lodgings. Determining whether a company is setting its prices appropriately in relation to its main competitors and customer expectations is essential in the new digital age. Online reputation is a way of measuring customer ratings and, when shared on the Internet, it generates expectations for future users. On the other hand, websites specializing in tourism constantly provide updated information about the prices offered by lodgings. The purpose of this study is to establish whether there is a relationship between price and the main variables of online reputation (perceived value, added value and perceived quality of service) as well as the function that best suits considering the category of accommodation, using the information available on the website Booking.com. The methodology applied is regression analysis using different functions (linear, logarithmic, inverse, quadratic and cubic). In addition, 4- and 5-star lodgings are analysed separately from those with 3 stars or less, concluding that there are significant differences between the variables that best explain the price, as well as the functions that best achieve this fit. In 4 and 5-star accommodations, the average quality of service variable is the one most related to prices, whereas in 3-star accommodations or less, the added value is the variable most related to prices. The cubic, quadratic and logarithmic functions get the best adjustments. The results obtained are of great interest to the management of the accommodation as customer ratings are linked to price levels in a competitive environment. This methodology facilitates the definition of the strategy and tactics of prices on the basis of real and updated market data, indicating in the conclusions the direct implication in the future development of learning machines and artificial intelligence applied to tourism.

ABSTRACTIt is generally believed that when the Mozart family arrived in Vienna on 6 October 1762, they initially may have spent a night or two in the inn ‘Zum weißen Ochsen’ on Fleischmarkt, then moved for the remainder of their stay to lodgings on Tiefer Graben, either in a house belonging to Johann Heinrich Ditscher (Otto Erich Deutsch, 1961) or one belonging to Gottlieb Friedrich Fischer (Walter Brauneis, 1991). All modern Mozart biographies transmit either Deutsch's claim or Brauneis's, and many continue to state that the Mozarts stayed at ‘Zum weißen Ochsen’. We have been able to show that none of these claims has any merit, and no primary evidence supports them. The notion that the Mozarts stayed at ‘Zum weißen Ochsen’ can be traced back to an article published in 1860, where it is asserted without evidence; the idea was then popularized in a children's story about Wolfgang. The claim that the Mozarts lodged on Tiefer Graben is based on a fanciful interpretation of a mistranscribed street name in Schiedermair's 1914 edition of Leopold Mozart's letter of 19 October 1762.Leopold actually wrote that the family lodged in ‘Fierberggaßl’. We argue that this refers to the still-existing Färbergasse, and that the Mozarts may have stayed in a house on that street (today the site of Färbergasse 3), with a long narrow wing fitting Leopold's description of their cramped quarters. We present other new details about this episode in Wolfgang's early life, including the identity of a customs official to whom he played a minuet on the violin, and the literary source of Leopold's remark that their lodgings were ‘1000 Schritt lang und 1. Schritt breit’. We also discuss the history of the house name ‘Zum rothen Säbel’, which is used incorrectly in the Mozart literature; at the time of the Mozarts’ visit in 1762, it referred to the house on Färbergasse in which – we argue – they actually stayed.

It contends that the university was shaped by existing West African conceptions of modern space and university buildings took on new meanings with the shifting politics of decolonization. The article also suggests that colonial development involved a range of groups and forms of knowledge. It seeks to recognize the strength of colonial institutions and cultures but also the limits to and contingencies in late colonial power.

Tourism is one of the biggest and mostly increasing branch all over the world. Since it is getting more and more significant in Hungary as well in this article I analyze the turnover of Hungarian tourism on the basis of guest nights spent on commercial lodgings. I examine its changes in time and its territorial spreading. Finally I explore the health touristic volume, because it is one of the most important touristic product of Hungary and the North Plain Region and the infrastructure based upon preserves unique opportunities both for health and wellness tourism.

Legionella sp. contamination in hot water systems in hotels in the ŚwiętokrzyskieVoivodshipIntroduction: In the European Union countries there were detected 6933 cases of legionellosis Legionnaires’ disease in 2014. The disease is caused by Legionella sp. bacteria, which are responsible for Legionella sp. pneumonia infection and common in both natural and artificial water environments. If there is proper temperature and nutrients, the bacteria multiply rapidly in artificial environments hot water systems, central air conditioning systems, and medical devices, posing a risk to human health.Aims: This study was conducted to quantify the frequency of contamination with Legionella sp. of hot water systems in some hotels in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship.Materials and methods: 228 buildings 103 hotels and 125 other types of lodging were investigated in the years 2009–2015, 1414 samples were collected which were later analyzed by membrane filtration technique in the laboratories of the State Sanitary Inspection in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, conforming to the methods of PN-ISO 11731-2:2008.Results: Legionella sp. was detected in 30.3% of the hot water systems investigated. The problem of bacteria colonization was more frequent in the hotel buildings 41.2% that in other types of lodging 20.8%. In 34 hotels and 20 other buildings the level of contamination was medium Legionella sp. 100–1000 CFU/100 ml sample, and in 9 hotel and 6 other buildings the contamination was high Legionella sp. 1000–10000 CFU/100 ml sample. In general out of 1414 collected samples, medium and high contamination with Legionella sp. was detected in 272 samples 19.2%.Conclusions: The results obtained in the study confirm an overall presence of Legionella sp. in hot water systems of hotels and other lodgings in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Having analyzed the data from the years 2009–2015, there may be observed a slight decline in the frequency of contamination in the recent years. Nonetheless, it is alarming that despite a periodic control system at some of the locations, the level of contamination is still signifi cant.

Between 1900 and 1964 Los Angeles attracted a sizeable influx of African American tourists and new residents. While race relations may have been better than in the regions from which many of them came, they found a geography of racial restrictions on where they could find tourist lodgings and permanent places to live. A number of guidebooks for African American travelers were published, most famously the annual Green Books, informing readers of the roadside accommodations that would cater to people of color. An analysis of the guidebooks’ entries for Los Angeles, 1930–1964, provides insights on the changing nature of racial discrimination there. Many of the structures they listed are still extant and deserving of commemoration.

Rural tourism was a popular sector of tourism development in the last few years. The importance of this sector means that it can be developed on its own or together with other tourist sectors. The future of rural tourism depends on the supports of the national plans and strategies and the sales systems to keep on the market. In this study, I analyze how the Hungarian National Tourism Development Strategy deals with rural tourism and sustainable tourism. I also analyze how the big Hungarian travel agencies’ sales help rural tourism to advertise lodgings, and raise the number of sales. For the future, I analyze the opportunity of using travel agencies to sell rural tourism products.

I begin, as I shall end, with fictions. In a well-known tale, The Sandman, Hoffmann has a student, Nathaniel, fall in love with a beautiful doll, Olympia, whom he has spied upon as she sits at a window across the street from his lodgings. We are meant to suppose that Nathaniel mistakes an automaton for a human being (and so a person). The mistake is the result of an elaborate but obscure deception on the part of the doll's designer, Professor Spalanzani. Nathaniel is disabused quite by accident when he over-hears a quarrel between Spalanzani, who made Olympia's clockwork, and the sinister Coppelius, who contributed the eyes (real eyes, it seems).

Hatton was a tea-town. People did not choose to live in Hatton, they were posted there, and left it as quickly as they decently could. Except, that is, for the coolies, who lived and perished among the tea-bushes and nourished them with their remains when they were dead. Even the one proper road that ran through Hatton entered it with a rush and… left it precipitately. On either side of the road were bunched the lodgings of the artisans… and on its tributary stood the houses of the professionals. Behind and beyond them rose row upon row of interminable tea-bushes reaching upto the skyline… And somewhere in between, in a break in the bushes… huddled the dark, dank line-rooms of the coolies.1

In Indonesia, Lasem identities as a China Town are constructed and developed over time, and Chinese architectural heritage is one of the main qualities and identity of the city. Recently, these unique Chinese architectural heritages have been transformed for tourism needs. This paper aims to document the transformation of functions or adaptive reuse, and its impact to forms and meanings of the Chinese architectural heritage of the city, and focuses on whether the interventions occurred was by the principles of architectural conservation. In April 2019, the study surveyed and documented five Chinese historic buildings in Karangturi area in Lasem to understand how the architectural heritage has transformed. The result shows that tourism has a direct influence on changes in the building functions in Lasem, such as the Oei House and Little China that have changed from residences to homestays to accommodate the needs of tourists lodgings. The other two buildings, namely House of Nyah Giok and Nyah Lasem museum have also changed their functions from residences to a batik home industry and a museum related to tourism attractions. Interventions on the four buildings with sensitive uses are following the principle of minimum intervention that preserved the original main buildings and changed only in the wings buildings, and new buildings for lodgings were infilled in vacant land of the site for the Oei House case. For one building, however, tourism has no direct influence on changes in the building functions, it has changed from a residence to an Islamic boarding school for the development of Islamic education that had nothing to do with preserving Chinese culture. Indirectly, the building remains a tourist destination because of its unique Chinese architectural features. Findings shows that for the four Chinese owners, the meaning or significance for the adaptation of the building is preserving historic values of the Chinese architecture, and economic values as well by developing commercial spaces and historic areas for tourist attractions.

A non-comparable, individual, observational and contemporary cross-sectional study in newborns was made to determine the dynamic lateralization in the head turning after release from the midline and its relationship with obstetric variables. From October to December of 2005, 320 newborns were admitted to the Adjacent Lodgings of the University Hospital of Santa Maria. From those, 89 were selected for assessment of the vestibular function since they have had previously fetal static control through ultrasound. Our results show that the right-sided head lateralization was significantly greater than the left-sided. The predominancy of the lateralization towards the right side also occurred in cephalic presentations and left-sided back, however these were not significant. Results corroborate with the existing literature and suggest an association between fetal static and vestibular function.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the correlation between customer experience and brand equity for a homestay establishment in Eastern Taiwan. Design/methodology/approach – Visitors staying at Yuehetang Rural Residence (YRR) during the month of January 2013 were surveyed, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis and typical correlation. Findings – Visitors demonstrated a very high level of overall satisfaction with their homestay experience (4.43-4.84), especially in terms of YRR’s ability to evoke feelings of being moved or touched, and of pleasure, excitement and satisfaction. Similarly, YRR’s brand equity was rated very high (3.98-4.67). Responders particularly felt that YRR’s image of prioritizing environmental protection and the quality of its lodgings were unique sources of added value and, therefore, factors in creating its healthy brand equity, despite the fact that it was rated low in terms of visibility to homestay-hunting customers. The correlation coefficient between experience and brand equity was 0.742, indicating a high degree of positive correlation. The correlation between customer loyalty and brand equity was also quite high, followed by, in decreasing order of strength, the correlations between brand equity and the environment-friendly image, the quality of lodging, organic farming and visibility. Practical implications – YRR’s core business value is environmental protection, a factor which, in today’s increasingly environment-conscious world, has unsurprisingly contributed heavily to its brand equity and customer loyalty. YRR and other homestay operators can utilize the findings of this paper to enhance visitor experience and their own brand equity. Originality/value – This paper is one of the first articles in the homestay experience field that offers content that environmental protection is an important factor to brand equity. It also offers numerous theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract The activities in name of tourist development in Wodzislaw poviat are the reason to evaluate the tourist land development. The evaluation was prepared on the basis of selected indexes characterizing the level of tourist infrastructure development. It considered: the number of lodgings per km2, the number of restaurants per km2, the amount of additional attractions per km2 and the density of tourist tracks. This database was analyzed by the use of GIS tools. Using GIS software allowed working with large databases and provided the possibility to create a graphic representation of the results. The level of tourist land development is diversified and depends on it function. The cities with the best developed tourist infrastructure are Wodzislaw Slaski, Radlin, Pszow, Rydultowy and town in Odra Valley: Olza, Bukow and Nieboczowy. Pszow, Gorzyce and Godow commons have the biggest density of tourist tracks.

Abstract The practicalities of accommodation for Paul’s entourage as it travelled around the Mediterranean have been little studied. The entourage could comprise at least nine co-workers, to whom should be added several slaves, since even under house arrest in Rome Paul had a personal assistant, who was definitely a slave, and an amanuensis. Such an entourage required hosts with large houses and there are hints in Acts that small business entrepreneurs and other hosts did have substantial dwellings. In Rome it seems that Paul paid for accommodation in relatively spacious quarters, allowing for a team of seven people (plus slaves) and sometimes a crowd of visitors; however, the term µίσθωµα probably does not refer to Paul’s rented lodgings but to payment of their cost. Greek traditions on hospitality provide a context into which the generosity of Paul’s hosts fits well.
