The goal of the article is to provide a comparison between several words from Florentine vernacular language and modern Italian language, using software written by the author. This paper focuses on two corpora: the first one includes a selection of Florentine vernacular literature and the second one a group of literary books written in a modern Italian language from the end of XIX Century up until the present. The article demonstrates the use of some features of the software to compare the two corpora, ranking the lexicographic entries using different strategies. It is possible to analyse the lexicon taking into consideration different types of sorting, using only three parameters: the word frequency, the percentage of frequency according to the number of words in the corpus, and the percentage of texts where the word is found in the corpus. From these parameters a fourth parameter also arises the level of persistence of words in each corpus. The software allows observing the differences in the use of lexicon in various periods of history, comparing the Florentine vernacular language, which was used in the Italian peninsula till the beginning of XIX Century, to the modern Italian language.

Abstract The study concentrates on the issue of quantitative and qualitative methods within the context of literary theory. It intends namely to present the concept of the literary corpus of Czech prose and define main parameters of the corpus. Besides the project of a specialized corpus, primarily intended for the use in the field of literary theory, the study deals with current stochastic and corpus methods applied by foreign scholars in analysis of literary prosaic texts. The study tries to incorporate the original project of Czech prose literary corpus in this contemporary context that represents one form of a recently flourishing discipline called Digital Humanities (Digital Literary Studies).

This study was designed to analyze the comparative use of punctuation marks in Russian and English newspaper editorials. The study was conducted using corpora of English-language editorials, taken from the New York Times in 2005, and of Russian-language editorials, taken from Izvestiia in the same year. Results indicated that the comma, colon, and the em-dash were used more often in the Russian corpus. The difference was determined to be statistically significant. The author then compared these results to the results of punctuation use in corpora of Russian and English literary texts. Again these punctuation marks were used more frequently in the Russian literary corpus than in the English one. At the same time, in both the Russian and English literary corpora these marks were used much more frequently than in the corpora of Russian and English editorials. In the second part of the article, the author attempts to isolate the reasons for the discrepancy in use of the colon by examining rules for its use as elaborated in authoritative Russian and English style guides. On the basis of this, the author suggests guidelines for the translation of the colon into English.

In this paper, we analyze the fractal structure of long human language records by mapping large samples of texts onto time series. The particular mapping set up in this work is inspired on linguistic basis in the sense that is retains the word as the fundamental unit of communication. The results confirm that beyond the short-range correlations resulting from syntactic rules acting at sentence level, long-range structures emerge in large written language samples that give rise to long-range correlations in the use of words.

Currently there are very few specialised corpora of literary texts that are tailored to the needs of literary critics who are interested in corpus stylistic analyses of prose fiction. Many existing corpora including literary texts were compiled for linguistic research interests and are often unsuitable for corpus stylistic purposes. The paper addresses three of the main problems: the absence of labelling of the texts for literary genre, the use of extracts, and the prevalence of linguistic periodisation schemes. C18P is a corpus of prose fiction designed specifically to address these issues. It traces the early development of the novel from 1700 up until the Victorian era. It can, for instance, be used for an analysis of the characteristic linguistic features of individual literary genres and forms. The following paper introduces the design of the corpus as well as some of its potential uses.

Sumerian lexical and literary compositions both emerged from the same social sphere, namely scribal education. The complexities of inter-compositional dependence in these two corpora have not been thoroughly explored, particularly as relevant to questions of text-building during the Old Babylonian period (c. 1800–1600 bce). Copying practices evident in lexical texts indicate that students and scholars adopted various methods of replication, including visual copying, copying from memory, and ad hoc innovation. They were not confined to reproducing a received text. Such practices extend to copying literary compositions. A study of compositions from Advanced Lexical Education in comparison with several literary compositions shows a complex inter-dialectic between the corpora, in which lexical compositions demonstrate dependence on literary compositions and vice versa. Thus, Old Babylonian students and scholars could experiment with multiple text-building practices, drawing on their knowledge of the lexical and the literary, regularly creating new versions of familiar compositions.

Numerosity and privileges of occurrence of various types of interjections (primary conventional, primary non-conventional, secondary, and onomatopoeic) were investigated in three different literary readings of Winnie-the-Pooh (Milne 1926), in one reading of Ulysses (Joyce 1960), and in an artistic performance by actors (the film The third man, Korda, Selznik, & Reed 1949). The spoken corpora, based on printed texts as source, consisted of 667 interjections. Ameka’s (1992 b, 1994) hypothesis that, parallel to their independence from ambient grammar, interjections would also be isolated temporally by preceding and following pauses, was not confirmed; for the entire corpus, only 39% of all interjections were thus isolated. However, an alternative hypothesis, that interjections serve an initializing function, was confirmed: Altogether, 77% of the interjections were found to be initializing, i.e., were preceded by a pause, introduced a speaking turn, introduced an utterance, and/or introduced a citation. Primary conventional interjections constituted the majority of interjections (overall 56%), but only two of these were common to all the corpora (oh and ah). By far the highest percentage (28 %) of primary non- conventional interjections occurred in the artistic performance of The third man. None of these occurred in either the novel or the screenplay of The third man, unlike the primary non-conventional interjections throughout the text of the literary readings. Functions of interjections are discussed in terms of Goffman’s (1981: 226) animators (literary readers, 26% of whose spoken interjections were added to those in the printed text) and principals (actors, 79% of whose spoken interjections were added to those in the printed text), in terms of literacy and orality, and in terms of the emotional stance and perspective of a speaker at the very moment of utterance.

Translationese in Japanese, despite its distinct characteristics when compared to natural Japanese, has so far been systematically studied by only one researcher (Furuno, 2005). In addition to this general lack of scholarly interest, the translational situations in Japan are not well-known in the West. In this paper, the notions of translationese in Japan are investigated from the perspective of Translation Studies and of Kokugogaku (studies of Japanese language). In addition, this study provides reasons for conducting systematic studies of translationese in Japan, where Translation Studies is still in its initial stages. Finally, the results of a preliminary examination of small comparable corpora using a translation and a non-translation are presented.

As a lingua franca across the globe, English plays a vital role in international communications. Due to rapid economic, political, and educational globalization, the English language has become a powerful means of communication. Therefore, English education is vital to the development of many countries around the world. Since 1932, the need for a lingua franca in Saudi Arabia developed as the country progressed politically, economically, and educationally. Now, English is important to Saudis’ economic, educational, and career development and success. Vocabulary is a major step in learning any language. By deepening students’ lexical knowledge, they will be able to use English accurately to express themselves. However, teaching words in isolation and through memorization is not highly effective; English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners need to interact with the language and its usage in a more profound way. This can be done by integrating corpora and stylistics analysis in an EFL curriculum. The importance of stylistics analysis to literary texts in the EFL classroom lies in the way that EFL learners will be exposed to authentic language. At the same time they will get insight into how English is structured; and by accessing corpora, which provide a wide range of data for the analysis of stylistics, students will be able to compare the lexical and grammatical patterns in authentic texts. Also, it is important to introduce students to the different levels of English (i.e. semantic, lexis, morphology); this will enlarge EFL learners’ knowledge of English vocabulary and various grammatical patterns. This project offers an innovative perspective on how to teach English for EFL university-level students by using corpora in a lexicalized stylistics approach, which will enable EFL learners to acquire vocabulary by reading literary texts. This provides a rich environment of lexical items and a variety of grammatical patterns. This approach offers EFL learners analytical tools that will improve their linguistic skills as they interact with and analyze authentic examples of English and gain insight about its historical, social and cultural background.

Abstract: The challenge in this text is to reflect on a set of issues concerning literature and reading, viewing both as a place where the subject is transformed. Starting from a body-to-body struggle with the literary text and taking into account the sensorial field of the verb, four essays have been written addressing the relationship between the body of the word and the body of the reader. In order to experience a text, it is necessary, on the one hand, to pay attention to the sense of the word and, on the other hand, to open the text to the body of those that receive it. A carnal relation with the text allows one to understand the literary word, not only from an analytic perspective, but also from a sensorial one, so that the act of reading - whether silent or out-loud - can be viewed as performance, as a movement of the senses.

The goal of this study is to determine whether measures of firm-level corporate govemance, level of personal financial literacy and the lending technologies deployed by banks can predict the SME owner and/or manager's perception of bank credit availability. The study samples Chinese SMEs located in the northwestern city of Xi'an. The study finds that the owners and/or managers of SMEs perceive bank credit availability to be limited. Several estimated models using ordinal logistic regression were able to predict perceptions of bank credit availability. Firm size, bank loan demand, corporate governance and a measure of moveable asset lending were found to be significant predictors of how owners and/or managers perceIve bank credit availability. An important implication ofthis research project is that SME owners and/or managers in search of external fmance should enhance their corporate governance, specifically in the area of disclosure and transparency. The owners and/or managers of firms that score high on corporate governance are more likely to perceive financial obstacles to be low compared with other owners and/or managers. Another important implication is that financial literacy training may be necessary to increase banle credit availability. Education, a proxy for fInancial literacy, provides indirect evidence that financial literacy has a positive bearing on the perception of bank credit availability. Education was found to have a positive effect on corporate governance.

This research explores the literary corpora used in the context of the teaching of French as a foreign language from the point of view of formats and variation in text scales. The primacy of complete work and the condemnation of the chosen text extracts are analysed through a historical approach that sheds lights on the instability of the values given to the extract or long reading in the context of teaching. The analysis of out of context2French editorial corpora highlights that formats come from a dual heritage: chosen excerpts and authentic documents. Extraction obeys two matrices, classicisation, which responds to acceptability constraints, and standardisation, which responds to accessibility constraints. Extraction follows a double continuum organised around two axes, identity/transformation, and opacity/transparency. The link to the work is mostly forgotten. The corpora produced by teachers, once contextualised, present more flexible, idiosyncratic features, taking into account the scales of texts and their reception. Through a comparative study, we observe the effects of text formats on their reception by allophone readers: text extracts enable a restitution of the microstructural scale, integral readings without support create a partial reading with recomposition of the macrostructure and adapted readings allow a fictional immersion that plays all the scales of the reader. We offer, for the training of future teachers, didactics of the variation of scales that take into account the effects of formats on the reception of texts by learners

The social and economic effects of high profile governance scandals such as the National Safety Council, HIH and Centro have triggered much debate, reform and research into predicting and preventing future failures. While this has meant director financial literacy is now recognised as a core capability required of each individual director, there has been little guidance on what this capability involves other than the very general statement of being able to 'read and understand financial statements'. This thesis presents the results of a Delphi study aimed at identifying the core concepts a director needs to master to be financially literate. Thirty-five experts drawn from accounting, education and practice agreed that to be financially literate a director must have a conceptual understanding of 24 basic accounting concepts and be able to independently apply this understanding to a strategic evaluation of the finances of the organisation they serve.

The literary production of writer mining Adelia Prado has been circumscribe in the compass of national literature as a symbol of the confluence of the experiences of transcendence that manifested both in the making literary, how far religious ritual. The adelianos texts are endowed of representation deep of experiences with the sacred, departing of a strong influence of Catholicism, but extrapolating the this limits and instituting a new vision about the relationship with the numinous. The theological aspect perceived in his poetic establish an corporation to the spirit, which be collocate as an alternative of transcendence. Departing of such presupposed, this research, of nature qualitative and bibliographical, analyses the relationships between poetry and religion in the poems that make up the book Oráculos de maio reflecting on representations of god, of the body and poetry, and how this relationship be gives in aesthetic plane. The analysis of the poems seek to demonstrate the representation of the sacred through what we call of a poetics of rewiring, built by the author and that configure metaphorical a heterodox perspective of the Christian religion. To both, we chose to work with a theoretical construct that collaborates with this discussion in sense of to dialogue with the broadly perspective that we adopted in relation to literature and the sacred, in this effect were significant the contributions from Otto (2007), Eliade (2010), Magalhães (2009), among others.

Background Health literacy measures the ability of individuals to acquire and understand basic health concepts. University students, given their high education, are expected to show high levels of literacy in health, although no previous studies have identified the prevalence and its associated factors in University students from Portugal. Objectives The aim of this study is to quantify the level of health literacy among University students of Health Sciences and to study its associated factors. Methodology A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the University Fernando Pessoa. Participants were 1st year students of one of the seven study cycles in Health Sciences in 2019-2020, attending to regular education, and speaking and understanding the Portuguese language. The final sample included 165 participants (125 women, 40 men, mean age of 20 years). A participation (among the eligible) of 84% was achieved. For data collection, a structured self-completed questionnaire was developed including the METER (Medical Term Recognition Test) to assess health literacy, previously validated in the Portuguese adult population, and questions on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyles and self-reported Body Mass Index (BMI). Odds ratio (OR) and the respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by logistic regression models, after adjustment for sex, age and BMI. Results The median health literacy score was 35.0, varying from 0 to 39 (possible range 0-40). The prevalence of low health literacy was 9.7%, and 52.1% had a functional health literacy (scoring 35-40). Men, students older than 20 years old, those with less educated parents, students who are Portuguese, non-workers, non-smokers, who watch more than 2 hours a day of TV, and who self-reported themselves as overweight or obese showed higher median health literacy scores, but significant differences were only reported for participant’s age, mother’s education and self-reported BMI status. In multivariate analysis, only overweight/obesity was significantly associated with a functional health literacy degree (OR=3.17, 95%CI: 1.07-9.41). Conclusions Only a limited fraction of University students of Health Sciences showed a functional health literacy (52%). Self-reported nutritional status was the only factor significantly associated with health literacy; those classified as having overweight or obesity were 3 times more likely to have a functional health literacy degree.

There is a paucity of evidence into why boards such as Centro fail despite meeting normative financial governance standards. Drawing on Agency and organisational behavioural theories this mixed-method study involved developing and applying in the field a psychometrically robust measure of director financial literacy (DFL) and interviewing directors to investigate how they develop and apply this capability to financial monitoring. Findings verified that, generally, directors lack the requisite baseline DFL for financial monitoring and challenged the prevailing view that skill-based board diversity is a critical antecedent for effective board performance. Importantly, this study identifies practical strategies for strengthening DFL.

Various methods were used in the Master's Thesis, such as analysis, comparison, several personal as well as phone interviews or questionnaire. Section 1 provides overview of Corporate Social Responsibility from various perspectives. Sections 2 and 3 focus on measuring impacts of Corporate Social Responsibility and particular measurement methods. Section 4 provides a comparison of existing methods. In section 5, Case Study on projects of ČSOB regarding Financial Literacy in the Czech Republic is being solved, including analysis of Financial Literacy in terms of "Need" and "Supply" as well as the application of measurement methods. As of the results, Global Reporting Initiative proved to be the most appropriate method to be used for Corporate Social Responsibility/sustainability measurement in general while London Benchmarking Group methodology is the most suitable within Corporate Community Investment. However, both methods should be supplemented when being applied as they are not exhaustive.

Annotation:
Gregory of Tours, the sixth-century Merovingian bishop, composed extensive historiographical and hagiographical corpora during the twenty years of his episcopacy in Tours. These works serve as important sources for the cultural, social, political and religious history of Merovingian Gaul. This book focuses on Gregory’s hagiographical collections, especially the Glory of the Martyrs, Glory of the Confessors, and Life of the Fathers, which contain accounts of saints and their miracles from across the Mediterranean world. It analyses these accounts from literary and historical perspectives, examining them through the lens of relations between the Merovingians and their Mediterranean counterparts, and contextualizing them within the identity crisis that followed the disintegration of the Roman world. This approach leads to groundbreaking conclusions about Gregory’s hagiographies, which this study argues were designed as an "ecclesiastical history" (of the Merovingian Church) that enabled him to craft a specific Gallo-Christian identity for his audience.
