Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence of the value of Research Parties, a new model of supplementary reference in a social environment. Design/methodology/approach A survey of multiple choice and open-ended questions was administered to Research Party participants (n = 43) over the course of three semesters to discover the profiles of the undergraduate students who attended and how they heard about the event and to assess the value of the interaction to the student. Findings Respondents unanimously agreed that their interactions with librarians at Research Parties were helpful because their information seeking needs, including finding sources, learning how to search databases, gaining clarity into the assignment, writing and citing, were met. Respondents also mentioned attributes of the librarian’s disposition or attitude such as enthusiastic conversation, encouragement and patience. Several students reflected on their own learning process and noted that they would seek help from a librarian again. Practical implications The results demonstrate that Research Parties are helpful to undergraduate students and a worthwhile model for academic libraries looking to complement their traditional reference services. Originality/value While faculty and administrators have verbally expressed excitement about Research Parties, librarian colleagues have anecdotally reported success instituting this model at their institutions, and students have provided informal positive feedback, this is the first time the model has been evaluated more formally to capture its value.

Annotation:
This dissertation reports on a study that investigated the functions and services that are rendered at the library of ARC-Small Grain Institute in Bethlehem. The study was directed by the research questions that included the investigation in library services and sources globally; the information seeking behaviour of the patrons of the library as well as the skills and competencies needed by librarians to render an effective service in a constant changing environment. These components served as a foundation for the development of a proposed service model, which reflects the incorporation of the changing roles of librarians in a research library. The current services and sources of the ARC-SGI library were discussed and compared to other libraries. A systematic review of the literature included the information seeking behaviour and information needs of researchers as well as the skills and competencies of librarians. A mixed-method approach, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, has been applied in the study. Data was collected through questionnaires and fifteen semi-structured interviews were held with selected patrons of ARC-SGI. The findings showed that information needs depends mostly on the different stages of research and flows directly from the type of work that they do. Attention was given to preferred source choices and problems experienced during information seeking. Training needs were addressed as well as the needs for additional information needed from the library. Based on the results, the study proposed a service model for an agricultural library. The model displays the library within the setting of an organisation as it supports the mission and vision of the parent organisation. It illustrates all the interdependent components that are essential for a successful agricultural library. The model also outlines the strategies of on-going evaluation and monitoring of the library services; the information needs and information seeking behaviour of the patrons as well as the challenges facing the library. The study concluded by making certain recommendations that can benefit the library of ARC-SGI, which will be an improvement added to the current services. A few suggestions are made for future research, which have definite advantages for an agricultural library within an organisation.

This study examines the contribution made by two alternative service or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to the provision and delivery of information in South Africa. A brief analysis of the role of information in impacting on and/or reproducing social formations is undertaken to provide an understanding of the way in which information has been used in the South African context to repress transformation of the apartheid state. This discussion frames an investigation into ways in which NGOs have attempted to counter information control on the part of the apartheid regime by mediating information to their constituencies. The relationship between information, education and development is addressed, providing insight into the educational role which service organisations play in delivering an information service on the one hand, the information role they perform in providing an education service on the other, and the developmental role they assume in both instances. Particular attention is paid to the way in which these services relate to their users in the process of imparting information to them. In this regard the interface between NGOs and their users is investigated and the very nature of this interaction assessed.

The Reference Service in public libraries in Portugal. Development model from international guidelines. Incorporating in its organization, procedures and communication with the users a set of tools brought by technology, Reference Service (RS) plays a key role in the struggle against inequality and digital illiteracy, promoting information literacy and creating knowledge. The perception of the value of RS and the weaknesses in public libraries in Portugal raise the question on how to contribute to its development. In order to build RS foundations on an evolutionary perspective, this research analyzes RUSA / ALA (Reference and User Services Association / American Library Association) and IFLA (International Federation of Library Association) international guidelines and the structural characteristics of the Portuguese National Public Library Network (RNBP), with the objective of creating a solution for the development of that service to be applied to this reality. Following an inductive comprehensive paradigm, with an orientation based on Grounded Theory, this research focuses on the context of discovery and the construction of a theory. Empirically it fulfils complementary qualitative and quantitative techniques, using a methodological triangulation. The field of analysis covers Portuguese public libraries integrating the RNBP. Aiming at functional and material aspects, direct observation techniques and a survey by questionnaire are applied. Targeting social aspects, six semistructured interviews are carried out. The results point to a situation of stagnation in the RNBP as well as the unstructured and informal performance of the SR, which justifies the need for evolution and investment. A model is constructed, following a strategy based on levels, flexible and adaptable to the needs and resources of each library, with the perspective of an incremental and consistent development of this service.

Annotation:
Estuaries are irreplaceable natural resources that must be managed carefully for the mutual benefit of all who enjoy and depend on them. The estuarine environment is a very dynamic and complex environment, which poses threats and challenges to estuary managers and estuary users. As estuarine management is a very knowledge-intensive task, researchers in the Eastern Cape Estuaries Management Programme (ECEMP), estuary managers and estuary users have recently turned their attention to knowledge management as one of the important means of ensuring continued success and effective management of estuaries. However, knowledge management as an emerging field has been slow in formulating universally accepted methodologies for auditing, capturing, creating, acquiring, sharing and utilising knowledge. Existing methodologies do not adequately address, in particular, the knowledge audit requirements of non-traditional or non-constrained and non-formalised organisations. The purpose of this study was to develop a context-specific model for auditing knowledge in the Eastern Cape estuaries, with special reference to the Tyolomnqa Estuary. The study intended to identify the knowledge community, analyse existing knowledge and knowledge needs and gaps in the Tyolomnqa Estuary area. In order to achieve the objectives, the descriptive research design, employing the case study approach was used in the study. Focus groups and unstructured interviews were used to collect data. A literature review, concentrating on values and issues surrounding the management of estuaries and key issues in knowledge management and knowledge auditing, was carried out. The collected data was analysed according to themes such as knowledge sources, knowledge identification and knowledge needs and gaps. The study found that the communities of the Tyolomnqa Estuary lack knowledge concerning the management of estuaries. The study also established that the community has little knowledge on who to contact for expert advice in addressing estuarine issues. Furthermore, the study found that the community needed knowledge on how to address estuarine management issues and how that knowledge could be accessed. Based on the findings and the literature review, the study proposes a context-specific knowledge audit model for non-traditional organisations. The model is meant to assist non-traditional organisations to evaluate their knowledge health or status, and to develop a much better understanding of the know-how and how it can be used to effectively sustain their services. The model can be used to successfully implement knowledge management strategies in non-traditional organisations. The model needs to be tested for verification and validation purposes.

AbstractStarting sometime in 2008/2009 one expects to be able to take a glimpse at physics at the TeV scale. This will be done through the Large Hadronic Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva. It will be a result of an unprecedented coordinated international scientific effort. This chapter is written in 2007. It is essentially inviting disaster to spell out in full detail what the current various theoretical speculations on the physics are, as well motivated as they may seem at this time. What I find of more value is to elaborate on some of the ideas and the motivations behind them. Some may stay with us, some may evolve and some may be discarded as the results of the experiments unfold. When the proton antiproton collider was turned on in the early eighties of the last century at Cern the theoretical ideas were ready to face the experimental results in confidence, a confidence which actually had prevailed. The emphasis was on the tremendous experimental challenges that needed to be overcome in both the production and the detection of the new particles. As far as theory was concerned this was about the physics of the standard model and not about the physics beyond it. The latter part was left safely unchallenged. That situation started changing when the large electron positron (LEP) collider experiments also at Cern were turned on as well the experiments at the Tevatron at Fermilab. Today it is with rather little, scientifically based, theoretical confidence that one is anticipating the outcome of the experiments. It is less the method and foundations that are tested and more the prejudices. It is these which are at the center of this chapter. Some claim to detect over the years an oscilatory behavior in the amount of conservatism expressed by leaders in physics. The generation in whose life time relativity and quantum mechanics were discovered remained non-conservative throughout their life. Some of the latter developed eventually such adventurous ideas as to form as a reaction a much more conservative following generation. The conservative generation perfected the inherited tools and has uncovered and constructed the Standard Model. They themselves were followed by a less conservative generation. The new generation was presented with a seemingly complete description of the known forces. In order to go outside the severe constraints of the Standard Model the new generation has drawn upon some of the more adventurous ideas of the older generation as well as created it own ideas. In a way almost all accepted notions were challenged. In the past such an attitude has led to major discoveries such as relativity and quantum mechanics. In some cases it was carried too far, the discovery of the neutrino was initially missed as energy conservation was temporarily given up.

AbstractThis chapter, Chaps. 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_3 and 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_4 present a self-contained introduction to the Standard Model of fundamental interactions, which describes in the unified framework of gauge quantum field theories all of the fundamental forces of nature but gravity: the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. This set of chapters thus provides both an introduction to the Standard Model, and to quantum field theory at an intermediate level. The union of the three chapters can be taken as a masters’ level course reference, and it requires as a prerequisite an elementary knowledge of quantum field theory, at the level of many introductory textbooks, such as Vol. 1 of Aitchison-Hey, or, at a somewhat more advanced level, Maggiore. The treatment is subdivided into three parts, each corresponding to an individual chapter, with more advanced field theory topics introduced along the way as needed. Specifically, this chapter presents the general structure of the Standard Model, its field content, and symmetry structure. This involves an introduction to non-abelian gauge theories both at the classical and quantum level. Also, it involves a discussion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism, that play a crucial role in the architecture of the Standard Model, and their interplay with the quantization of gauge theories. Chapter 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_3 then presents the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. This requires introducing the concepts of CP violation and mixing, and of radiative corrections. Finally, Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_4 presents the strong sector of the theory, which requires a more detailed treatment of renormalization and the renormalization group.

This paper is to evaluate the depletion capability of the DeCART code for PMR200 two-dimensional core. DeCART solves the burnup equation by the matrix exponential based on the Krylov Subspace method. The depletion calculation is performed up to 270 EFPD by using total 14 burnup steps. The double heterogeneity effect is resolved by introducing the RPT method. The DeCART solutions by using a 47-G PWR neutron library are compared with the McCARD Monte Carlo solution which uses ENDF/B-VII. DeCART shows about maximum 1200 pcm eigenvalue, about maximum 2.5% block and 6.0% pin power differences near 180 EFPDs. The differences are mainly due to the library and the geometrical model discrepancy. While the reference calculation is performed by imposing the vacuum condition for the vessel outside, DeCART uses a zigzag-type boundary model. The use of the VHTR neutron library that is scheduled to develop reduces the eigenvalue differences. In the computing time, DeCART requires about 2 and half hours for 14 depletion steps. Therefore, it is concluded that the DeCART code produces a reasonable result for the VHTR core depletion calculation within an affordable computing time.

A numerical investigation of fuel composition effects on diesel engine combustion is presented. A new discrete multi-component (DMC) fuel model was used to represent the properties and composition of multi-component diesel fuels. A multi-dimensional CFD code, KIVA-ERC-Chemkin, that is coupled with improved sub-models and the Chemkin library, was employed for the simulations. A small-bore, high-speed DI diesel engine operating in a low temperature combustion (LTC) regime was simulated with four different diesel fuels using a 6-component fuel model. The oxidation chemistry was calculated using a reduced mechanism for primary reference fuel, with the reaction rate coefficients adjusted to account for the Cetane number (CN) variation of the fuels of interest. The major property differences of the fuels include volatility, viscosity, and autoignitability. The predicted pressure, heat release rate, and emissions are compared with experimental data available in the literature. The results show that the present multi-component fuel model performs reliably, and captures the effects of fuel composition differences on combustion. The emissions trends for the different fuels were also in good agreement with the corresponding experimental measurements. The results also indicate that, in addition to more realistic predictions of the fuel physical properties, further improvements of the chemical characteristics of the fuel components is desirable.

Tidal current energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources. The prediction of the hydrodynamic loads and power efficiency are the critical issues for verifying the new designs. Besides, Optimization of turbine arrangement is important for a tidal turbine farm. The hydrodynamic behavior of a turbine operating in the wake of an upstream turbine needs to clarify. In this paper we present a CFD approach in which the CFD library of OpenFOAM is utilized for prediction of the performance of a three bladed horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) in a test tunnel environment. The Reynolds Average Navier Stokes (RANS) equation with Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model is applied. The steady-state solver is tested for present numerical simulation. The Multi Reference Framework (MRF) method is adopted for dealing with grid relative rotation. Turbulence models effects and the mesh generation are well described. The resultant power and thrust coefficients of these simulations are compared with experimental results at various tip speed ratios (TSRs).

The paper investigates the performance of a combined heat and power system by means of a fully dynamic numerical approach. An ad-hoc library for the simulation of energy conversion systems is developed under the OpenModelica open source platform; the library includes the main components that usually equip a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system and they can be connected as they are logically connected in the real plant. Each component is modelled by means of equations and correlations that calculate their performance on a time dependent basis. Therefore, many configurations can be evaluated not only in terms of cumulative annual results or average performance, but the instantaneous behavior can be investigated. The numerical library is constructed using the lumped and distributed parameter approach and it is validated by comparing the numerical results with the measured values over a one-year time period. The prediction capabilities of the proposed numerical approach are evaluated by simulating a case study of a health spa. This case study is selected since it is characterized by significant requirements of both thermal and electric energy. The comparison demonstrated that the calculated results are in good agreement with the measurements in terms of both annual values and distribution over the reference period. Furthermore, an optimization algorithm is adopted and linked to the developed library in order to estimate the best size of different components of the CHP system according to a number of constraints. This feature is particularly important when addressing the energy efficiency of a complete system that is depending on a number of interdependent variables. Therefore, the case study is investigated by accounting also for additional technologies that can be further enhance the performance of the system both in terms of energy consumption and economic investment. In particular, the numerical model is used to optimized the CHP energy efficiency by estimating the best trade-off between the reduction of the energy purchased and the overall cost of the system. The application of PV panels and electric energy accumulators is also investigated and the simulation demonstrates that the size of the cogeneration unit equal to 48 kW, the number of PV panels of 299 and the battery capacity of 45 kWh provide the lowest amount of energy purchased, while the best return of investment is obtained by the CHP unit of 40 kW along with 109 PV panels and a battery of 40 kWh.

The High Temperature engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) in Japan is a 30 MWth helium-cooled graphite-moderated reactor. Similar to most light water reactors (LWRs), the HTTR was designed to burn low-enriched UO2 fuel. Due to its superior safety features and ultra-high burnup tolerance of the coated fuel particles, it is deemed interesting to explore the possibility and performance of burning plutonium and minor actinides (PuMA) in HTTR. A detailed HTTR core model was established using the MCNP5/X Monte Carlo code with ENDF/B-VII cross-section library. The model has also routed for validation by performing benchmark calculations and comparing with reference results. This work presents a preliminary study on neutronic effects of replacing uranium in the design fuel with typical plutonium reprocessed from LWR spent fuels. The results revealed that the core characteristics such as neutron spectrum, spatial flux/power distribution, multiplication factor versus fuel-to-moderator atomic ratio, and safety related reactivity temperature coefficients are strongly dependent on the fuel content to various extents. In particular, PuMA tends to harden the neutron spectrum and cause the subsequent effects accordingly.

Annotation:
Fluidized bed steam gasification of solid biomass yields a high quality producer gas, which can be used for efficient combined heat and power production (CHP) and as an intermediate product for chemical syntheses. In order to study the behavior of an 8 MW (fuel power) CHP plant, which has been in successful operation since 2001, a comprehensive model library has been developed for the equation-oriented process simulation software IPSEpro. The models are validated with measured data from the commercial scale plant. Because every model is based on the conservation of mass and energy, the simulation also allows the validation of measured data. By solution of a system describing the entire process, which uses measured data as input, a reference case for actual plant operation can be defined. In a next step, the behavior of the plant is studied during variations of selected parameters. Therefore, a model of the gasification reactor, which is able to describe the behavior during parameter variation, is necessary. It can be shown that fuel water content and gasification temperature significantly influence the global plant performance. The simulation predicts the efficiency of the existing power plant in optimized operation. Finally, part load behavior is investigated and a performance map of the CHP plant is presented. The results show that CHP-concepts based on fluidized bed steam gasification can reach high electric efficiencies and high overall fuel utilization rates even at small plant capacities of 10 MW fuel power.

A coupling of the Lifting Line Free Vortex Wake (LLFVW) model of the open source wind turbine software QBlade and the wind turbine structural analysis tool FAST has been achieved. FAST has been modified and compiled as a dynamic library, taking rotor blade loading from the LLFVW model as input. Most current wind turbine aeroelastic simulations make use of the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) model, based upon a number of simplifying assumptions which are often violated in unsteady situations. The purpose of the implemented model is to improve accuracy under unsteady conditions. The coupling has been thoroughly validated against the NREL 5MW reference turbine. The turbine is compared under both steady conditions and three unsteady operating conditions to the BEM code AeroDyn. The turbine has been simulated operating at a constant RPM and with a variable-speed, variable blade-pitch-to-feather controller. Under steady conditions the agreement between the LLFVW and AeroDyn is demonstrated to be very good. The LLFVW produces different predictions for rotor power, blade deflection and blade loading during transient conditions. A number of important observations have been made which illustrate the necessity of a higher fidelity aerodynamic model. The validation and results are considered as a step towards the implementation of an open-source, high fidelity aeroelastic tool for wind turbines.

Data exchange specifications not only must be broad and general to achieve acceptance, but also must be customizable in a controlled and interoperable manner to be useful. The Product Life Cycle Support (PLCS) suite of data exchange specifications (known as DEXs) uses templates to enable controlled customizability without sacrificing breadth or interoperability. DEXs are business context-specific subsets of ISO 10303 Application Protocol (AP) 239, subject to additional constraints imposed by the templates. A PLCS template defines how AP239 entities and their attributes will be instantiated using an externally-defined controlled vocabulary defined in a Reference Data Library. Template instantiations are defined using an Instantiation Path (IP) specified using an arcane syntax that must be manually written by the template developer. The PLCS information model is formally defined in the ISO 10303 EXPRESS language, but there is no formalism used at the template level. A challenge for newcomers to PLCS is to dive into and understand all the bespoken, non-standardized and PLCS-specific technologies (domain-specific languages and software) used to develop and implement the templates. DEXML presents an approach based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) enabling the use of mainstream software and technologies to develop and implement DEXs, reducing the need for nonstandard and unfamiliar languages and tools.
