Lewis, according to Kuklick, was ‘a private person’, of ‘unsparing honesty and … utter dedication to the rational pursuit of truth’. He was, Kuklick continues, ‘equally uncompromising in what he expected of his readers, and as a result wrote for and lectured to a tiny group of scholars’. I hope that—since I occasionally find myself borrowing from him and frequently find myself arguing with him—I may count myself as one of the ‘tiny group of scholars’ for whom Lewis wrote. And perhaps, by arguing with him again here, I may persuade some of you of the enduring interest of his work.

Though he is generally known as one of the key voices in conservative Christianity, this thesis demonstrates that C. S. Lewis was in fact far more liberal in his view of salvation than many would expect. Lewis argued for a universalist interpretation of salvation, in which the death of Christ opened up the possibility of salvation for all of humanity, not merely those people who could be identified as Christians. Lewis did believe that people could and did choose Hell over Heaven, however, and still saw evangelism as the duty of every Christian. All of Lewis's writings are in a sense evangelistic, and all attempt to effect the conversion of the reader in the same manner in which Lewis himself was first drawn to Christianity: by baptizing the imagination in the hope that the reason will follow.

The main interest of the Fontaine research group is in the development of metal-free catalysis with frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP). Dimer formation is known to cause loss of reactivity due to the energetic cost of dimer dissociation. By adding alkyl groups to the Lewis acid moiety of the 1-BH2-2-NR2-C6H4 type FLP can enhance the bulk of the abiphilic molecule, and thus disfavor the formation of the dimer. Those ambiphilic molecules (1-BH2-2-NR2-C6H4) are unstable and require the addition of a Lewis base in order to be isolated. The reactivity of these adducts towards catalytic borylation of N-methylpyrrole has been evaluated. The stability of the dimer seems to prevent degradation of such molecules. The sensitivity of aminoboranes towards protic reagents is known. The investigation of the reactivity of [1-BH2-2-NMe2-C6H4]2 with thiols lead to the discovery of a novel metal-free catalyst for the borylation of thiols. Boron-sulfur bonds are useful yet underutilised reagents. Their ability to undergo Michael addition with enones and thioestérification with esters is discussed. It is a good example of the synthesis of a value-added product made possible by the use of a metal-free catalyst.

Although C. S. Lewis was not a metaphor theorist, the issue of metaphor appears often enough in his writings for one to cull from them a general theoretical view. This thesis attempts to examine Lewis's thoughts on metaphor against the background of modern metaphor theory. Forty or fifty years ago such a study would have been less fruitful, for his views on metaphor so differed from contemporary theorists that their works offered no positive atmosphere in which to approach his work. Now, however, the general tenor of certain streams in metaphor theory has become more amenable to his views. Indeed, it appears that some key issues raised in modern metaphor theory exist in a seminal form in Lewis's writings. While Lewis cannot be put into any one school, modern theory offers the necessary tools with which to approach his discussions of the figure. This thesis, therefore, begins by briefly outlining the history of metaphor theory in so far as it relates to Lewis. The second chapter discusses his metaphysics, since he believed that his views on metaphor had metaphysical implications. The third and fourth chapters present Lewis's view of metaphor' process and function, as gleaned from his writings. Finally, the thesis concludes by relating Lewis's view back to his metaphysics.

It is often said that imagination is quite alien to reason. But reason tries to understand reality, and so does imagination, especially mythopoeic imagination, whose marvellous stories cannot have nothing to do with the real world. That is the case that c. S. Lewis, a christian and a staunch rationalist, puts forward in and by his whole work. According to him, there is some truth in myth, and we need it to offset the abstract nature of our rational thinking, which falls short of reason as logos. Therefore we must take myth seriously, even from a religious point of view. That does not means that we must take it to be allegorical : myth is no allegory, as can be shown by studying lewis's own stories, which are not allegorical. Myths are based on our acquaintace with "the other world of the spirit", and must be understood as revealing permanent aspects of human experience or subjectivity, in relation to the universe and to god. The last point is most important in lewis's thought : he has sometimes been called a lay theologian, and his imaginative and oblique approach to ultimate reality proves to have given us the outlines of something like a poetic theo-logy

This dissertation describes the development of cooperative catalyst systems that contain an achiral Lewis acid and a chiral Lewis acid that may have overlapping functions but play their independent roles to promote enantioselective C–C bond formations. Chapter 1 provides a summary of recent advances made in the field of enantioselective cooperative catalysis that served as intellectual foundations for this dissertation research. As it will be discussed in the first chapter, key limitations of cooperative catalysis are: (1) undesirable catalyst deactivation which occurs due to acid/base complexation, (2) requirement for base sensitive pronucleophiles and acid sensitive electrophiles, and (3) poor reaction efficiency. In an effort to overcome these fundamental limitations, we have developed “frustrated” Lewis pair (FLP)-based catalyst systems that consist of potent and sterically encumbered Lewis acids used in pair with bulky N-containing Lewis bases. To demonstrate the potential of the novel FLP catalyst system, we describe our work involving the enantioselective Conia-ene-type cyclization (Chapter 2). In the subsequent chapter (Chapter 3), we discuss the application of the FLP catalysts for enantioselective β-amino C–H functionalization reactions

Abstract Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and NASA Lewis Research Center studied a silicon-carbide-fiber-reinforced, titanium-metal-matrix (MMC) composite designated SiC(SCS-6)/Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn. Fracture tests of three nominal 15.24-cm (6-in.) diameter SCS–6/Ti-15-3 rings at 427 °C (800 °F) and room temperature resulted in failure at internal pressures of 0.172 GPa (25 ksi) (average) and 0.235 GPa (34.1 ksi), respectively. Predictions of internal pressure to failure varied from 0.140 to 0.276 GPa (20.3 to 40.1 ksi) at 427 °C (800 °F). Nondestructive evaluation revealed that the rings’ MMC cores had varying density and were not uniformly distributed inside the monolithic casing. Analytical predictions of ring cyclic life at 0.154-GPa (22.4-ksi) internal pressure varied from 1000 to 15 000 cycles. No fatigue life data were obtained with the MMC rings for comparison with theory.

Waste heat is a major energy loss in manufacturing facilities. Thermally conductive polymer composite heat exchangers could be utilized in the ultralow temperature range (below 200° C) for waste heat recovery. Fused deposition modeling (FDM), also known as three-dimensional (3-D) printing, has become an increasingly popular technology and presents one approach to fabrication of these exchangers. The primary challenge to the use of FDM is the low-conductivity of the materials themselves. This paper presents a study of a new polymer-Zn composite designed for enhanced thermal conductivity for usage in FDM systems. Thermal properties were assessed in addition to basic printability. Filler volume percentages were varied to study the effects on material properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were taken of the 3-D printed test pieces to determine filler orientation and filler distribution. Lastly, experimentally obtained thermal conductivity values were compared to the theoretical thermal conductivity values predicted from the Lewis-Nielsen model.

A kinetic model, based on published studies of thrombin neutralization, is used to examine factors that limit spread of free thrombin in a simple plasma. It employs equations with presently available rate parameters which describe the courses of the major thrombin-binding reactions at 37°C in buffered saline solutions approximating plasma ultrafiltrate. Thrombin is bound reversibly by fibrinogen and fibrin-1 polymers as enzyme-substrate complexes (1) and by “fibrin” at a non-proteolyt ic site (2), and essentially irreversibly by antithrombins (3). These bindings reduce free thrombin levels and so limit spread of activity. The model equations with parameters from (1) and (3) show that thrombin neutralization by thrombin-substrate complexes is very brief and thrombin-antithrombin reactions are much too slow for early reduction of thrombin activity. However, parameters from (2) show that rapid reversible binding of thrombin by “fibrin” much reduces level of free thrombin and the level continues to fall as the thrombin is passed to the antithrombins. The model shows that a rapidly-acting antithrombin (e.g. heparin-ATIII) could reduce free thrombin fast enough to inhibit slower thrombin activations (e.g. of FXIII), and that a sufficient concentration of a reversible binder can govern the level of free thrombin. This suggests that a non-toxic reversible binder, with suitable Kd and half-life, would be valuable in treating thrombosis. Verification and extension of the model findings require better experimental definition of the parameters.(1) Lewis, S.D. et al. J. Biol. Chem. 260, 10192-10199, 1985.(2) Liu, C.Y. et al. J. Biol. Historically, combustion modeling is important for many transportation- and ground-based applications. More recently, modeling has been offered as an early screening tool in the evaluation of a potential alternative aviation jet fuel. This combustion evaluation path would in theory be conducted by gas turbine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on proprietary geometries and conditions. Ideally, OEMs would have access to the latest combustion theory models and would thus have the highest predictive confidence in their model predictions. Unfortunately, the latest combustion theory codes are not written for commercial purposes. This work identifies and develops a conduit for OEM usage of latest flamelet theory for use in the evaluation of alternative jet fuel combustion properties. A so-called “common format routine” (CFR) software with two low-dimensional manifold combustion models that can be used for laminar and turbulent applications is developed, which can be implemented by OEMs on proprietary hardware. The two models are the flamelet prolongation of the intrinsic low-dimensional manifold (FPI), used for premixed combustion, and the flamelet progress variable (FPV), utilized for nonpremixed combustion. The three branches of combustion are computed using a hybrid tool that combines homotopic flamelet calculations with scaling laws and the two- and one-point flamelet continuation methods in order to resolve bifurcations. The mixture fraction and progress variable definitions can be chosen to be any summation of atomic and species composition, respectively. Diffusivity coefficients can be computed using unity Lewis number, mixture-averaged and multicomponent species composition. The turbulence-chemistry interaction is tabulated a priori using Beta probability density function (PDF) for the mixture fraction and Beta or Dirac-delta PDF for the progress variable. Parallel computing is necessary for industrial quality tabulation. The tabulated table can be used for k-ε and k-ω RANS, SAS, DES, and LES simulations. The software can also interact with liquid spray and exchange mass between the liquid and gaseous phase. The software is verified against previous numerical simulations of canonical triple flames, piloted flames and single-cup combustor. The numerical results are validated against experimental measurements of temperature and species mass fractions. The CFR software advances Cantera 2.3. Hence, the software contains an inner layer of C++ code, an intermediate layer of Python wrappers, and an upper layer (GUI) of C# code. The pre-tabulated chemistry is used for CFD simulations. The tables are bi-linearly interpolated for laminar simulations and tri-linearly interpolated for turbulent simulations. The tabulated chemistry can be hooked to commercial software such as Fluent through C and Scheme codes. The simulated flames presented here were computed with this software. The developed software is reliable for modeling and simulation of complex combustion phenomena.

Several organizations, including Westinghouse, CREE, and ATM, as well as researchers in Japan and Europe, are working to develop SiC power devices for reliable, high power and high temperature environments in military, industrial, utility, and automotive applications. Other organizations, such as NASA Lewis and several universities, are also doing important basic work on basic SiC technology development. It has been recognized for two decades that the superior properties of SiC lead to range of devices with higher power, greater temperature tolerance, and significantly more radiation hardness than silicon or GaAs. This combination of superior thermal and electrical properties results in SiC devices that can operate at up to ten times the power density of Si devices for a given volume. Recent research has focused on the development of vertical metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (VMOSFET) power device technology, and complementary high speed, temperature-tolerant rectifier-diodes for power applications. We are also evaluating applications for field control thyristors (FCT) and MOS turn-off thyristors (MTO). The technical issues to be resolved for these devices are also common to other power device structures. The present paper reviews the relative benefits of various power devices structures, with emphasis on how the special properties of SiC enhance the desirability of specific device configurations as compared to the Si-based versions of these devices. Progress in SiC material quality and recent power device research will be reviewed, and the potential for SiC-based devices to operate at much higher temperatures than Si-based devices, or with enhanced reliability at higher temperatures will be stressed. We have already demonstrated 1000V breakdown, current densities of 1 kA/cm2, and measurements up to 400°C in small diodes. The extension of this work will enable the implementation of highly distributed aircraft power control systems, as well as actuator and signal conditioning electronics for next generation engine sensors, by permitting electronic circuits, sensors and smart actuators to be mounted on or at the engine.

The Michaelis-Menten (Km ), catalytic (kcat ), and specificity (kcat/Km ) constants were determined for humSft α- and β-thrombins with the chromogenic substrate S-2238 (H-D-Phe-Pip-Arg-pNA), Chromozym-TH (Tos-Gly-Pro-Arg-pNA), and Spectrozyme-TH (H-D-HHT-Ala-Arg-pNA) in 0.15 M NaCl buffered with 10 mM HEPES ancTlO mM Tris-HCT at pH 7.4, 37°C. Spontaneous hydrolysis was insignificant for these substrates. Both S-2238 and Spectrozyme-TH exhibited limiting solubilities at ∼35 μM, while Chromozym-TH did not do so up to 50 μM. From initial estimates, Km's and k t's were refined by computer Gause-Newton iterations or nonlinearneast-square fits for the concentration of p-nitroanalide formed per second versus the initial substrate concentration. No major differences were found between a-thrombin (99% α, 91% esterolytically active enzyme, and > 3,500 kilo-U.S. clotting units/g with fibrinogen) and Yγ-thrombin (98% γ. 89% active enzyme, and < 10 kilo-units/g). For α- versus γ-thrombin and the three substrates, respectively, the Km 's were 6.75 ± 0.13 vs 7.62 ± 0.30, 18.4 ± 0.4 vs 23.0 ± 0.3, and 2.53 ± 0.02 vs 3.85 ± 0.51 μM; the kcat> s were 125 ± 1 vs 134 ± 2, 181 ± 2 vs 130 ± 1, and 35.5 ± 0.2 vs 52.4 ± 2.0 s−1 ; and the kcat/Km 's were 18.5 vs 17.6, 9.84 vs 5.65, and 10.1 vs 13.6 s−1 μm . These values closely approximate those of 7.2 ± 0.9 μM, 84 ± 4 s−1 , and 11.7 s−1 μM−1 determined by Higgins, Lewis, and Shafer (J. Biol. Chem. 258:9276-9282, 1983) for the Aα cleavage of human fibrinogen by human α-thrombin under physiologically relevant conditions. Thus, these chromogenic substrates have thrombin specificities similar to that of fibrinogen, although their amidolytic activities are independent of additional active-site regions required for fibrinogen clotting activity (α vs γ-thrombin). Fibrinogen interactions with such active-site regions might account for why the fibrinogen Aa site is an atypical thrombin susceptible bond and the high species variability of fibrinopeptides.
