In order to obtain baseline information about Lewis antigen expression in human urothelium in order that changes during malignant transformation can be evaluated, urothelium from eight individuals of known erythrocyte Lewis types were stained by a Tween-modified indirect immunoperoxidase staining technique using goat antibodies directed toward the Lewis a and Lewis b determinants and mouse monoclonal antibodies directed toward the Lewis a determinant in serial dilutions. To evaluate the value of the method for tissue Lewis typing, eleven ureters from individuals of unknown erythrocyte Lewis types were stained using goat antibodies. The Lewis antigens were located on the cell membranes and in the cytoplasm of urothelial cells. Goat antibodies identified Lea-b-, Lea+b+, and Lea+b- urothelium. Monoclonal antibodies identified urothelium with both low and high Lewis a antigen expression as well as urothelium with no Lewis a antigen expression. Urothelial Lewis antigen expression correlated with erythrocyte Lewis types in Lea-b+ and Lea+b- individuals. In Lea-b- individuals Lewis determinants were either not detected or were expressed similarly to Lea-b+ individuals. Urothelial Lewis typing were doubtful in two out of the eleven ureters examined. The results imply that knowledge about erythrocyte Lewis type or normal tissue Lewis antigen expression is necessary for the immunohistochemical evaluation of changes in Lewis antigen expression in urothelial tumors.

La ()-ebelactone b, molecule qui possede des proprietes immunostimmulantes, appartient a la famille des -lactones naturelles. Une des methodes pour former le motif -lactone est la cycloaddition 2+2 catalysee par un acide de lewis, entre un aldehyde et un cetene silyle. L'objectif de notre travail etait d'une part d'etudier la reactivite du trimethylsilylcetene dans les cycloadditions 2+2 sur des aldehydes chiraux et des imines pauvres en electrons, et d'autre part de realiser une approche synthetique de la ()-ebelactone b qui mettrait en jeu une reaction de cycloaddition 2+2 comme etape-cle. Ce manuscrit debute par une revue bibliographique des cycloadditions 2+2 catalysees par un acide de lewis, permettant d'acceder a des cyclobutanes ou a des heterocycles a 4 chainons. Il se poursuit par une mise a jour sur la preparation et la reactivite des -lactones, qui decrit les methodes nouvelles developpees depuis 1993 et leur application en synthese totale. La formation diastereoselective de -lactones par cycloaddition 2+2 entre le trimethylsilylcetene et des aldehydes chiraux - ou -substitues, en presence d'un acide de lewis a ete etudiee. Un mecanisme a ete propose pour le rearrangement parfois oberve des -lactones. La cycloaddition 2+2 catalysee par un acide de lewis entre le trimethylsilylcetene et une glyoxaldimine a conduit a la formation d'un -lactame silyle, pour laquelle nous proposons un mecanisme a demande inverse d'electrons. La reactivite du -lactame silyle a egalement ete exploree. L'aldehyde precurseur de la ()-ebelactone b, a ete synthetise en 13 etapes a partir du (r)-3-hydroxy-2-methylpropanoate de methyle, selon une strategie qui met en jeu une crotylboration de roush, une homoaldolisation de hoppe et un rearrangement-1,2 de wadman-kocienski comme etapes diastereoselectives-cles. La stereochimie de ce precurseur a ete confirmee par etude rmn d'un derive lactol.

Ce travail porte sur la chimie de coordination des ligands ambiphiles combinant une base et un acide de Lewis. Le rôle que peut jouer l'acide de Lewis dans la sphère de coordination du métal est en particulier étudié par le biais d'une approche expérimentale et théorique. Le premier chapitre introduit le contexte et les principaux objectifs de ce travail. Le deuxième chapitre propose une étude des interactions métal→borane supportées par des ligands ambiphiles. Une description précise de l'interaction Au→B est proposée dans le cadre de la coordination de ligand diphosphine boranes. L'influence du fragment métallique sur la force de l'interaction M→B est également évaluée à travers l'étude d'une série isoélectronique de 7 complexes de triphosphine borane des métaux des groupes X et XI. Le troisième chapitre aborde les limites d'existence de ce type d'interaction en combinant ligands flexibles et métal peu basique. Un mode de coordination multi-centre est mis en évidence au sein d'une famille de complexes de Cuivre de mono- et di- phosphine boranes. Ce résultat met en lumière la capacité de ces ligands à adapter leur coordination en fonction de la demande électronique du métal. Le quatrième chapitre vise à déterminer l'influence du fragment acide de Lewis sur le mode de coordination des ligands ambiphiles. De façon inattendue, la complexation des ligands di- et tri- phosphine alanes conduit à des espèces zwittérioniques résultant d'une activation « totale » de la liaison M-X par l'acide de Lewis. La complexation des ligands phosphine gallanes conduit quant à elle à deux isomères de coordination, neutres et zwittérioniques, obtenus séparément ou en équilibre suivant le nombre de groupements donneurs du ligand.

This project is devoted to boron chemistry in two ways. Firstly, the development of the boron – nitrogen “Frustrated” Lewis Pairs (FLPs) was investigated by combining the principles of this approach with known bifunctional catalytic methods. This also included design and synthetic efforts towards new bifunctional catalysts 108 and 157 on the basis of L-proline connected to Lewis acidic borane or borinic derivatives, which revealed multiple peculiarities of boron chemistry. Catalyst 176 was successfully utilised in nitro-Michael addition reaction. Secondly, boronic acids are promising catalysts for the important process of direct amide formation, which is a much more atom efficient and sustainable alternative to the current industrial approaches to amide synthesis. However, the mechanism of action of boronic acids in this process is not yet well understood, while this is crucial for effective design and future application of catalysts for direct amide formation. Thus the roles of both borinic and boronic acids in direct amide formation reactions were investigated. This included isolation of multiple Lewis adducts formed as intermediates or byproducts in different reaction mixtures between amines, carboxylic acids and boron-containing compounds. These results have helped to better understand the reactivity of boron-based catalysts and allowed development of the new mechanistic understanding of boronic acids in direct amide formation. These finding underlined the complexity of boron-containing systems, the importance of boron-nitrogen Lewis adduct interactions and the high possibility of multiple boron atoms orchestrating the investigated processes. The non-catalytic thermal direct amide formation reaction was also studied both in flow and microwave reactors in order to better understand these complex multicomponent systems.

Most of the literary texts classified as juvenile literature by the publishers are similar to each other when it comes to structure. These narratives usually present myths, organized constructions that depict human cyclic trajectories, which show characters as role models. Considering, therefore, the need to identify these dialogues among mythical works, this paper analyzes the short stories The magician s nephew , The lion, the witch and the wardrobe and The last battle , which compose The chronicles of Narnia, by C. S. Lewis and his biblical intertext as alternative for teenagers nowadays. Therefore, this research has three steps: the first one theorizes about intertext, based on studies of Julia Kristeva, G?rard Genette and Antoine Compagnon, and Bible as literature, from the point of view of Northrop Frye and Robert Alter; the second step, based on researches by Pierre Bourdieu, Roger Chartier and other experts in this area, ponders about the market of literary productions and brings an overview of The chronicles of Narnia, by Clive Staples Lewis, and the Bible; the third moment refers to the analysis of the intertext, considering that both have mythic structures, and to the validity of the works in question as role model for today's readers.

S. Lewis, e seu intertexto b?blico como alternativa para os jovens de hoje. The plasma concentration of factor VIII is influenced by the ABO blood group. Individuals with blood group 0 have a lower concentration of both factor VIII coagulant activity, factor VIII coagulant antigen (VIIICAg) and factor VIII related antigen (VIHRAg) than individuals with group A, B and AB. Thirty percent of the genetic variance of VIIIRAg concentration is due to the ABO blood group. The Lewis substances Lea and Leb are closely related to the A, B and H substances. We therefore examined the effect of the presence of these antigens on the plasma concentration of VIIICAg and VIIIRAg. The material was 74 monozygotic and 84 dizygotic twin pairs and 58 blood donors with ABO blood group 0. VIIICAg was determined by a radioimmunoassay and VIIIRAg was determined by an electroimmunoassay. A higher mean concentration °f VIIICAg (147%) and VIIIRAg (81%) was found in individuals with the Le antigen on their red cell surface compared to the mean concentration of VIIICAg (101%) and VIIIRAg (66%) in individuals who lacked this antigen. The difference was found in individuals with ABO blood group 0 only. Individuals with red cell Lea antigen are non-secretors and individuals who lack this antigen but have the Leb antigen are secretors of the A, B and H substances. The lowest factor VIII concentration was found in group 0 secretors. The effect of the Lewis phenotype on factor VIII concentration is therefore most probably due to an effect of the secretor locus. This finding may have practical implications for the diagnosis of carriers of hemophilia A. it has been shown that information on the ABO blood group improves the discrimination between carriers and normals. We found that the effect of ABO blood group on the total variance of VIIIRAg was higher in secretors (21%) than in non-secretors (8%). Since the frequency of secretors varies widely, it is possible that the importance of the ABO locus in carrier detection is different in different populations. Lewis blood typing in materials of carriers and normals are necessary to determine the effect of the Lewis phenotype in carrier detection.

The development of primary and secondary moment loading stress indices and analytical derivations of stress intensification factors (SIF) has matured over the past 35 years. The original development work for the ASME piping Codes SIF definitions was empirically derived well over 65 years ago and still, debates linger over the equivalence of the physical fatigue testing of piping fittings and the rapid evolution of stress classification techniques as applied specifically, to the finite element method. The trunnion elbow geometry has always presented significant mathematical challenges in the determination of stress intensification factors, which is primarily due to the complexity of the intersection created by a right circular cylinder (forming the trunnion) to a toroid (forming the elbow). This paper traces the maturation of the SIF definition for the trunnion-elbow geometry from the original roots of the Markl tests, to the early analytical formulations presented by Williams and Lewis, to the WRC and EPRI results published in the late 1990s, through today’s rendition as contained in the Appendices to the ASME B&PV Code, Section III. In addition, geometry combinations are introduced herein that have not been covered in any of the previously referenced publications. Finally, a comparison of the various formulations is tendered for consideration of the reader to determine if in fact there has been significant progress in this subject area since the early analytical work published by Williams and Lewis in the early 1980s.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critically involved in cognitive processes underlying working memory (WM), attention, and inhibition of responses to non-relevant stimuli (Fuster, 2000; Goldman-Rakic, 1996). In this context, catecholaminergic inputs have proven to be critical for the regulation of these cognitive processes (Levitt et al., 1984; Lewis et al., 1987; Lewis and Morrison, 1989; Porrino and Goldman-Rakic, 1982). Aston-Jones and Bloom (1981a, b) showed that, in addition to dopamine (DA) the norepinephrine (NE) neurons located in the locus coeruleus (LC) and terminating in the PFC are important in mediating selective and sustained attention and vigilance. Moreover, stimulation of the LC increases the discrimination of incoming external stimuli to the PFC by reducing the background noise, therefore enhancing the cortical signal-to-noise ratio (Aston-Jones et al., 1985; Berridge and Waterhouse, 2003; Foote et al., 1980, 1983; Waterhouse et al., 1980; Robbins, 2000). More recently, several studies have shown that adrenergic agonists, especially specific alpha-2 agonists, are very effective in enhancing WM and attention. Indeed, administration of alpha-2 agonists can ameliorate some of the negative effects on cognition produced by NE depletion due to aging in monkeys (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Arnsten et al., 1988; Arnsten and Leslie, 1991) and improve performance in WM-related tasks in young monkeys with NE depletion (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Cai et al., 1993). Moreover, the therapeutic effects of the specific alpha-2 agonists, clonidine and guanfacine in treating disorders related to dysfunction of WM in patients have been proved (Fields et al., 1988; Mair and McEntree 1986, 1988; Hunt et al., 1985, 1990, 1995).

Neste artigo, a partir da apresentação de um esquema de busca extremal baseada no méetodo do gradiente para compensação da equação diferencial parcial (EDP) da onda, associada a um mapeamento estático a ser otimizado, estende-se a dinâmica de atuação para cascatas de EDPs, especicamente para: (a) uma EDP anti-estável da onda como uma interconexão de duas EDPs de transporte (atraso), e (b) uma EDP anti-estável da onda com entrada atrasada. As leis de controle dos sistemas em malha fechada são propostas a partir da aplicação de transformações do tipo backstepping e da formulação usando condições de Neumann e Dirichlet. Simulações numéricas ilustram os resultados teóricos.

Abstract The emergence in the early 1970s of what about a decade later became the first release of ASME B31G began the development and evolution of criteria to assess the severity of metal-loss defects. Motivated by the desire to reduce the conservatism embedded in B31G, the late 1980s saw the release of Modified B31G, with that same report also introducing RSTRENG, which quantified “riverbottom” effects. The desire to avoid excessive conservatism in their application to higher-strength Grades gave rise to alternative criteria for such applications. PCORRC appeared in 1997, with early versions of DNV RP-F101 and British Gas’ LPC-1 criteria following shortly thereafter. It has since become evident for isolated smooth-bottomed features that in addition to feature length and depth, its width can be a factor, as can its planar shape, and through-thickness profile. This paper builds on insight gained from the prior work, presenting and validating a Level 1 failure criteria for isolated metal-loss features. The defect-free term for this Level 1 criterion relies on the Zhu-Leis criterion for defect-free pipe failure. That criterion is coupled to a recalibrated defect term analogous to PCORRC, whose extension to include the effects of width is considered. The resulting Level 1 criterion is validated in reference to full-scale tests of pipe with metal-loss, which include a mix of real corrosion and flat-bottomed machined features. These tests consider Grades from Gr B to X100, a wide range of diameters and thicknesses, and in many cases the effect of width. Finite element results are used to illustrate the role of width. Benchmarked against almost 80 full-scale tests it is shown that this new approach affects a reduction in conservatism. At the same time, it provides clear benefits in regard to reduced predictive scatter, as well as a reduction in required maintenance, and the scope of features that must be considered in field-digs.

Introdução: A aloimunização é a formação de anticorpos maternos contra antígenos presentes no sangue fetal. Dependendo da capacidade de atravessarem a placenta, antigenicidade e concentração de anticorpos envolvidos, pode haver desenvolvimento de doença hemolítica perinatal. A profilaxia de aloimunização com imunoglobulina anti-D é extremamente eficaz em reduzir a morbimortalidade da doença, uma vez que esse anticorpo é o principal responsável por causar hemólise. Por outro lado, o uso dessa profilaxia tem levado a aumento proporcional de casos de doença por anticorpo não-D. Objetivo: Descrever o perfil imuno-hematológico das gestantes aloimunizadas acompanhadas em centro de referência entre 2014 e 2019. Material e Métodos: Foi realizada revisão de prontuários, analisando o grupo sanguíneo (GS), o fator Rh e o tipo de anticorpo contra hemácia. Além disso, foi realizada revisão da literatura acessada nas bases de dados PubMed e Uptodate. Resultados: Entre 2014 e 2019, foram acompanhadas 416 gestantes aloimunizadas nessa instituição. Entre elas, o GS mais comum foi A (42,1%), seguido de O (38,5%), B (14,2%) e AB (4,6%). As pacientes eram predominantemente Rh negativo (81,5%), enquanto o restante era Rh positivo (18,5%). A titulação do Coombs indireto variou entre 1:1 e 1:4096, com a maioria das gestantes (15%) com titulação de 1:16. Quanto ao tipo de anticorpo, a maior prevalência foi de anti-D (72%), seguido, respectivamente, de anti-M (7%), anti-K, anti-E, anti-Lews, anti-C e anti-c. Em 87% dos casos, houve identificação de apenas um anticorpo; em 11% dos casos foram identificados dois anticorpos; e em 2%, três ou mais anticorpos. Quanto à associação do anti-D com outros anticorpos, em 9% dos casos o segundo anticorpo identificado foi o anti-C; em 2%, o anti-E; e em 1%, o anti-K, seguidos do anti-e e do anti-S, com 0,5% cada. Discussão: Apesar da existência da profilaxia para aloimunização para anti-D, analisando o perfil imuno-hematológico das gestantes aloimunizadas na instituição, observa-se o predomínio absoluto de anticorpos anti-D. A prevenção da doença hemolítica perinatal por meio da administração de imunoglobulina anti-D é considerada extremamente eficaz, com taxa de sucesso de aproximadamente 99%. A profilaxia com imunoglobulina anti-D está disponível desde 1968 e é capaz de reduzir a taxa de aloimunização de 13‒16% para 0,5‒1,8%. Segundo a literatura, no mundo todo, aproximadamente 50% das mulheres que deveriam receber a profilaxia não a recebem, o que leva à exposição de milhares de fetos e neonatos à elevada morbimortalidade da doença. Conclusão: A doença hemolítica perinatal é potencialmente grave e sua forma mais comum é prevenível por meio da administração da imunoglobulina anti-D. O predomínio da aloimunização pelo anti-D na população estudada traduz a deficiência na implementação da profilaxia e torna essa doença um grande desafio à saúde pública.
