Aspiration levels play an important role in everyday decision making. In practice, however, decisions are not based on an aspiration level alone. The aspiration level and the overall probabilities of success and failure may receive special attention, but subjects will not be completely insensitive to difference within the classes of gains and losses. Aspirations have a significant impact on pupil attainment net of family background and other individual factors, but their effect is reduced when examining pupil progression. Some students, particularly from low-income or first-generation backgrounds, in spite of having high aspirations fail to meet their goals to attend college. Aspiration is a strong desire to achieve something in life. Every people they want to be successful man in life, they want famous, popular in society, so aspiration has vague meaning and sense. In this research student of Nepal they have high aspiration in life. Some of they want social worker, doctor, pilot engineer, great motivator and great leader in future. The study was conducted among the 511 students of grade ten students of three districts of Nepal.

We examined Chinese adolescents’ aspirations and explored the relationship between relative intrinsic aspirations (RIA) and prosocial behaviors and whether adolescents with different levels of RIA have different emphases on self- and other-oriented considerations during prosocial decision making. In Study 1, 236 participants were recruited and completed a questionnaire containing the Aspiration Index and Prosocial Tendencies Measure. The results show that RIA are positively associated with adolescents’ prosocial behaviors. In Study 2, 158 adolescents completed a questionnaire containing the Aspiration Index and measurements of prosocial decision making and considerations in prosocial decision making. To some extent, adolescents with a lower level of RIA have a greater emphasis on self-oriented considerations, whereas adolescents with a higher level of RIA have a greater emphasis on other-oriented considerations. In addition, both studies suggest that Chinese adolescents value intrinsic aspirations above extrinsic ones.

This article studies how educational aspirations of children are shaped in Biblián, Ecuador, a traditional sending country. Data sources were a multi-level survey and semi-structured interviews that were analysed using logistic regression and thematic analysis, respectively. Several theoretical relationships are confirmed: the household socioeconomic status, caregiver’s educational aspirations and age are the most important variables that predict children educational aspirations. Child migratory dreams and the absence of the father or the mother only predict the educational aspiration of getting a high school degree, but do not predict the aspiration of a graduate degree. Thematic analysis suggests that, besides seeing education as a means to have higher incomes, mothers perceive it as a sign of social status and assign it an intrinsic value.

Career apathy is very important to support the future / career of students, because it is a demand in life. Career aspiration is an individual orientation towards the desired career goals according to the desired conditions or expectations. One of the factors that influence an individual's career orientation is gender. Problems related to gender or gender greatly affect the achievement of individual career goals, namely in men and women. This research attempts to see the description of career aspiration level of students of gender variables. This study aims to reveal and describe differences in the level of career aspirations of students in terms of gender. The type of research used is descriptive comparative. The hypothesis tested in this study is "There are differences in the level of career aspirations of students in terms of male and female sex". The findings of this study reveal that career aspirations of male and female students are both high-categorized, but there are differences in some indicators. it is hoped that the results of this research can be a guideline for BK teachers in schools in designing career guidance programs for students, as well as to enrich the repertoire of scholarship related to individual career development.

In models of aspiration-based reinforcement learning, agents adapt by comparing payoffs achieved from actions chosen in the past with an aspiration level. Though such models are well-established in behavioural psychology, only recently have they begun to receive attention in game theory and its applications to economics and politics. This paper provides an informal overview of a range of such theories applied to repeated interaction games. We describe different models of aspiration formation: where (1) aspirations are fixed but required to be consistent with longrun average payoffs; (2) aspirations evolve based on past personal experience or of previous generations of players; and (3) aspirations are based on the experience of peers. Convergence to non-Nash outcomes may result in either of these formulations. Indeed, cooperative behaviour can emerge and survive in the long run, even though it may be a strictly dominated strategy in the stage game, and despite the myopic adaptation of stage game strategies. Differences between reinforcement learning and evolutionary game theory are also discussed.

Women continue to be in the minority in school administration in public schools in the United States, although the majority of teachers are female. The role of assistant principal is the gateway to school administration. The purpose of this study was to describe the essence of the transition from teaching to school administration, the role of a female assistant principal, and the career aspirations of female assistant principals. This study used a phenomenological approach to understand the essence of the transition for the participants. Six women were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol to collect data on their experiences transitioning to the role of assistant principal. Using the process of horizonalization, the data were transcribed and analyzed using statements and quotes from the interviews to develop themes common to all participants. Findings revealed that these women continually seek to better themselves, others, and their organizations. They experienced a significant sense of loss as they transitioned to their new role. Lastly, the supports needed by women as they continue in their career as school administrators were uncovered.

Annotation:
One of the challenges facing community colleges in the United States is the looming retirements of executive/senior-level leadership, particularly the president, on a wide scale. This study explored the career aspirations of executive-level leaders within the community college using Social Cognitive Career Theory as the conceptual framework. Within the context of a three-person collaborative dissertation project, a mixed methods case study approach was utilized for the research design. It first examined the perceived and preferred organizational culture(s) by administering the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI). Building upon results of the OCAI, interviews with executive-level leaders explored how personal and institutional factors impact their aspirations of to ascend to the community college presidency. The findings of the research indicate that affecting change, being asked, and the desire to help are personal factors of influence that motivate executive-level leaders to seek the role of community college president. On the other hand, age, family, and potential work-life imbalance might dissuade executive-level leaders from seeking this role. The study reveals that organizational culture (the “culture of caring”) and leadership development are positive factors of institutional influence. Institutional factors that dissuade executive-level leaders from seeking the community college presidency are politics, the state of the institution being led, and the unknown. This study advances the field of educational leadership in that a number of personal and institutional factors are adduced that influence the aspirations of executive-level leaders to progress to the community college presidency. The findings identify the need for research across multiple institutions and the need to expand Social Cognitive Career Theory to include personal-cognitive barriers of race and gender.

The main focus of this thesis is on evaluating the reform programme of the Advanced level curriculum for 16-19 year olds, entitled Qualifyingfor Success (QFS), which was introduced into schools and colleges in England in September 2000. Chapter 1 of this thesis explores some of the main influences on the development of postcompulsory education and training between 1973 and 2000. The chapter (1) summarises the major societal and economic influences that led to the transformation of the labour market and current social practices; (2) analyses reforms to the post-compulsory curriculum in order to establish which education reforms over the last thirty years in England have contributed to mass participation in post compulsory education and training, higher achievement rates and increased entry to Higher Education; (3) explores the linkages between post-compulsory education reform and modifications in labour market trends; (4) examines the influences that led to the reform and diversification of the Advanced level curriculum; and (5) addresses the issue of why there is still a significant minority of young people who are not included in the new trajectory of lifelong learning for all. The Curriculum 2000 reforms promoted a radical restructuring of the Advanced level post-compulsory curriculum. In order to evaluate the reform process, this thesis gathered data from a three year longitudinal study by tracking a group of students through their experiences of post-compulsory education and through interviewing senior managers at the different stages of the policy implementation. Chapter 3 of this thesis analyses whether the Advanced level curriculum had been broadened by considering a variety of mechanisms: the use of AS levels, the inclusion of General Studies and other enrichment activities and the incorporation of Key Skills. This chapter concludes by acknowledging that the Curriculum 2000 reform programme contributed to a certain broadening of the Advanced level curriculum but not as much as had been envisaged. The second data analysis chapter, Chapter 4, provides an analysis of the complex transitions from education to work made by a group of young people in East Sussex. The chapter begins by outlining theoretical approaches to youth transitions. This is followed by a review of the literature relating to the inclusion of student voice within educationalresearch in order to provide a context for my decision to place emphasis on the young peoples' own perspective on this transitional period of their lives. The later sections of the chapter analyse the multitude of factors which can contribute to shaping young peoples' career choices. These include; (1) gender differences in qualification achievement and; (2) the effects this can have on occupational choice; (3) how the experience of a broader Advanced level curriculum can affect post-compulsory subject choices and subsequent career decisions and; (4) the role of part-time paid work. A key underlying theme within this chapter is the emphasis given to agency in the students' career decision making and, in conclusion, I suggest that many of the students make pragmatically rational decisions when faced with choices in post-compulsory education

This study explores the aspirations and learning Identities of three groups of Level 1 students In the English Further Education (FE) system. This group have historically been neglected in terms of academic study and research, but despite this have been heavily problematised as'disengaged' or "disaffected' and are regarded as being of low value within both the education system and wider society where value and status are associated predominantly with academic credentials and their associated economic capacity. As part of an attempt to address this issue of low value, the study was conducted within a social justice theoretical framework using a case study approach which was developed over time to facilitate an inclusive research methodology which demonstrated value and respect for the student participants. A range of methods was used, including group interviews, classroom observation and the collection of 'incidental' data such as coursework contributed by students. The study found that despite expressing a verbal 'buy in'to learning, for these students learning identities formed only a small, and often relatively unimportant, part of overall identity formation. Their aspirations were high but, constrained by societal structures, and unaware of the educational pathways and credentials necessary to achieve their occupational ambitions most used their agency to develop identities and acquire economic capital outside the field of education. It concludes that these are key factors in the fact that most of these young people drift into low skill, low paid employment, maintaining a status quo in terms of social class structures.

The aim of this work is to bring the study of facility management, that is the management of the services connected with the maintenance and valorisation of real estate, to a higher and more complete level. We have sought to overcome the – albeit inevitable – engineering/efficientist approach, to arrive at an all-round promotion and analysis of the discipline, hinging on the concept of service. This means, first and foremost, rediscovering the relational aspect apropos the clientele and, starting from this, moving towards a restructuring of the service where the aim is to meet personal requirements rather than purely technical standards. The aspiration, underscored in the title, is in fact that of arriving at a "global care" of the person.

AbstractThis chapter is concerned with Filipina single mothers’ access to diverse forms of welfare assistance in Japan and its impact on their decisions, aspirations and capabilities for migration and settlement. It fundamentally asks: Does access to the welfare system make Filipina migrant mothers settle in or move away from Japan? I argue that welfare arrangements significantly affect Filipina single mothers and the ways in which they raise their children and manage a transnational household. Access to child-rearing, subsidised living and housing benefits in Japan, combined with private welfare arrangements in the Philippines, have enabled them to navigate various life-course events. Analysis of their welfare access across time and space suggests that Filipina immigrants’ migration and settlement aspirations are contingent upon macro-level factors such as the restrictive nature of Japan’s immigration, welfare and labour policies, the ambivalent attitudes of Japanese society towards immigrants and individual factors such as legal status, residency and social networks that influence their socio-economic roles and family-related activities in Japan and the Philippines. Attaining permanent residency in Japan is a utilitarian choice which gives them flexible options for the future. Their aspirations to eventually either return to the Philippines or to settle in Japan are influenced less by the ‘adequate’ social protection available in Japan than by the age of their children, their investments and their dreams of a desirable retirement.

AbstractThis chapter seeks to provide insight into the ways in which Member States leveraged the regulatory discretion afforded to them by the GDPR. Specifically, it reviews the biobank regulatory environment; whether and how derogations under Article 89(2) GDPR are enabled; the legal basis for scientific research and the role of consent in biobanking post-GDPR; the balance between individual rights and public interest in national law; and finally, the GDPR’s impact and future possibilities for biobanking. In exercising self-determination, Member States can, to a certain extent, align data protection requirements with their values and aspirations. Such alignment, though, could jeopardize collaborative research. In light of the need to bridge divergent legal and ethical requirements at a national and supranational level, the role of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) might prove to be essential.

AbstractThis book provides a unique approach to the Moroccan context. Many researchers have conducted fieldwork in Morocco, departing from migration studies (e.g., De Haas 2003, 2006, 2010; Czaika and De Haas 2011; De Haas and El Ghanjou 2000), while others solely focused on environmental and climate changes (e.g., Schilling et al. 2012), leaving the interplay between both to be explored more in-depth. The Moroccan context offers a unique research context because it is confronted with gradual environmental change over the last decades and has initiated considerable action at the national level to develop policies or strategies to counteract these changes. Hence, Morocco in 2019 ranked among the leading countries in the fight against climate change on the Climate Change Performance Index (Burck et al. 2019). Furthermore, Morocco evolved into one of the world’s leading emigration countries in the second half of the twentieth century, being characterized by unexpected developments, including colonial migration, labour migration, family reunification, and, recently, undocumented migration. This led to a high degree of internal differentiation within the Moroccan migrant population and strong and influential migrant networks (De Haas 2007; Schilling et al. 2012; cf. Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-61390-7_3).

Abstract The COVID-19 Pandemic renewed interest on the question of what goals should be pursued by schools in a world rapidly changing and uncertain. As education leaders developed strategies to continue to educate during the Pandemic, through alternative education arrangements necessitated by the closure of schools, the question of re-prioritizing curriculum became essential. In addition, the anticipated disruptions and impacts that the Pandemic would cause brought the question of what capacities matter to the fore. This chapter reviews the history of mass education and examines the role of the United Nations and other international organizations advocating for schools to educate the whole child and to cultivate the breath of skills essential to advance individual freedoms and social improvement. The chapter makes the case that the aspiration to cultivate a broad range of competencies is not only necessary to meet the growing demands of civic and economic participation, but also critical to close opportunity gaps. The development of a science of implementation of system level reform to educate the whole child is fundamental to close the growing gap between more ambitious aspirations for schools and the learning opportunities that most children experience and that are at the root of their low levels of knowledge and skills as demonstrated in international comparative assessments. Implementation strategies need to take into account the stage of institutional development of the education system, and align the components and sequence of the reform to the existing capacities and structures, while using the reform to help the system advance towards more complex forms of organization that enable it to achieve more ambitious goals. The chapter makes the case for examining the implementation of large scale reforms in countries at varied stages of educational development in order to overcome the limitations of the current knowledge base that relies excessively on the study of a narrow range of countries at similar levels of development, many of them with stagnant or declining performance of their students in international assessments of knowledge and skills. Effective implementation requires also coherence across the various levels of governance of the education system and good communication and collaboration across a wide spectrum of stakeholders. Such communication can be facilitated by a good theory of mind of how others view reform. A reform can be viewed through five alternative frameworks: cultural, psychological, professional, institutional and political, or through a combination of those, and each reform is based on elements reflecting one or several of those frames. Understanding these frames, can help better understand how others view change, thus facilitating communication and the development of a shared theory of change. The chapter concludes describing the methods of this study and introducing the six large scale reforms examined in the book.

Higher education has emerged as one of the most critical factors for the Nation’s economic, political, social and cultural growth and development. Reforming the higher education sector has become an emergent norm across the globe, especially in the developing world. India is one such emerging nation, witnessing a major shift in its ideological, pragmatic and policy directions in the last few years. The higher education sector in India has witnessed unprecedented expansion. However, given the distinctive social-political-economic context and its complexity in India, expansion in higher education is often linked with ensuring equity and access. Whereas in the developed world, expansion is often associated with quality or excellence in higher education i.e. creating world-class universities. Further, excellence in higher education is arguably the most critical component for the survival, sustenance and growth of the sector. To this end, the paper examines the convergence and divergence in policies and practices related to the pursuit of excellence in higher education and its institutions in India vis-à-vis the dominant global reforms in higher education. Erstwhile policies related to quality in higher education and the current draft National Education Policy-2019, provide a reference to the local-distinctive strategies for seeking excellence at the systemic and the institutional level, with an aspiration for global reputation. For instance, National Institutional Ranking Framework, University Grants Commission’s graded autonomy, Institutional restructuring, National Accreditation and Assessment Council and Quacquarelli Symonds- India rating and so on. The paper also sets direction on how Local strategies for global aspirations could unpack a series of issues regarding the reforms in education and delineate in what ways that these emerging global reforms, strategies are effective and appropriate to the local higher education system and its institutions.

The impact of boundary layer aspiration, or suction, on the aerodynamic design and performance of turbomachinery airfoils is discussed in this paper. Aspiration is studied first in the context of a controlled diffusion cascade, where the effect of discrete aspiration on loading levels and profile loss is computationally investigated. Blade design features which are essential in achieving high loading and minimizing the aspiration requirement are described. Design studies of two aspirated compressor stages and an aspirated turbine exit guide vane using three dimensional Navier-Stokes calculations are presented. The calculations show that high loading can be achieved over most of the blade span with a relatively small amount of aspiration. Three dimensional effects close to the endwalls are shown to degrade the performance to varying degrees depending on the loading level.

Language and cultural shifts are the major causes of endangerment of any community, which begins from minor switching of practices and verbal repertoires and ends with a whole change of community, and finally culminates in the community losing its own identity. Language shift usually takes place in a bilingual or multilingual speech community. It is a social phenomenon, whereby one language replaces another in a given society due to underlying changes in the composition and aspirations of the society. This process transitions from speaking the old to the new language. This is not fully a structural change caused by the dynamics of the old language as a system. The new language is adopted as a result of contact with another language community. The term language shift excludes language change which can be seen as an evolution, and hence the transition from older to newer forms of the same language. Contact between two or more cultures often leads to different sociological processes such as acculturation, cultural change, cultural genocide, and cultural shift. Cultural shift occurs when a community gives up its own socio-cultural practices like customs, rituals and traditional beliefs, and is characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value systems. It differs from the process of cultural change in which a community’s culture can evolve independently. Shifts may take place at the level of an individual speaker who gradually forgets or shifts to another language and consequently this language spreads to an entire community. This phenomenon can be seen among the Aranadans, a primitive tribal community found mainly in the Malappuram district and in other Northern districts such as Kasargode and Kannur of Kerala, owing to their irreverence towards the preservation of their own language and culture. The socio-ecological, psychological and educational factors impact their language and cultural shifts. This paper illustrates and clarifies the reasons for the language and cultural shifts of the Aranadan tribal community.

This paper presents the validation of a design method for aspirated compressor blades, combining a passive separation control by blade shaping with an active flow control by aspiration. In a first part, a linear aspirated cascade designed according to this method was built and tested at low speed, without and with aspiration. The latter was only applied on the suction surfaces of the blades. Particle Image Velocimetry measurements performed at mid-span of the cascade, in the central passage, showed a complete reattachment of the separated boundary layer on the suction side of the blade. A flow deflection of approximately 65 degrees was achieved requiring an aspirated mass flow rate of 3.3%. However, boundary layer reattachment is effective in a zone centered at mid-span covering 30% of blade span. Flow visualization revealed large corner separation in the presence of aspiration. This is due to the re-establishment of strong pressure gradient on sidewalls of the cascade. No flow control was applied on these zones for optical access purpose. These secondary-flow regions reduced the diffusion occurring within the cascade by nearly 60% in comparison with the design intent. They also increased the expected level of total pressure losses measured by wake traverses downstream of the cascade. In a second part, numerical simulations of the aforementioned experiment were carried out to help the understanding of the experimental results. The simulations were able to reproduce correctly the characteristic flow features, without and with aspiration, observed and measured during the experiment. Thus, they confirmed the potential of this design method developed for aspirated compressor blades, as well as CFD capabilities to simulate the influence of technological effects like suction slots. A uniform and a non-uniform aspiration distribution along the blade span direction were considered during simulations. Suction distribution was found to have a significant impact on the control by aspiration. This design feature, in addition to flow control on endwalls, has to be taken into account in the three-dimensional design of highly loaded aspirated compressor blades.

Abstract The ability to make rational decisions is one of mankind’s unique attributes. A characteristic of the formal techniques that have been used for decision making is the selection of the best alternative with respect to a certain figure of merit. One of the most critical problems in engineering design is making early decisions on a sound basis. However, the early stages of design are also the most uncertain, and obtaining precise information upon which to base design decisions is usually impossible. The need for a methodology to represent and manipulate imprecision is greatest in the early, preliminary stages of engineering design, where the designer is most unsure of the final dimensions and shape, material properties, and performance of the completed design. Utility Theory provides an analytical way to aid the decisions in engineering design. By exchanging from objective to attribute and expressing these attitudes mathematically, a utility based attribute function (Utility Function) can be set up to describe the attitude of a decision-maker with regard to his/her preference. In this work, the Aspiration-level Interactive Method (AIM), a goal-seeking method based on identifying non-dominated solutions, is used along with Utility Theory to compensate for the limitations of utility theory in forming a meaningful group preference. This work is an initial attempt to integrate two methodologies from the field of decision theory in order to provide rational decision support for design problems where a hierarchy of decision making is required. The hierarchy, in this paper, is characterized by multiple designers at the lower level who report to one manager. The designers each have different preferences and values, while the manager is driven by project goals and specifications. The approach presented generates feasible and preferred design combinations for further analysis in the detailed design phase.

Well-being is a common human aspiration. Governments and states, too, seek to promote and ensure the well-being of their citizens; some even argue that this should be their overarching goal. But it is not enough for a country to flourish, and for its citizens to enjoy well-being, if the situation cannot be maintained over the long term. Well-being must be sustainable. The state needs criteria for assessing the well-being of its citizens, so that it can work to raise the well-being level. Joining many other governments around the world, the Israeli government adopted a comprehensive set of indices for measuring well-being in 2015. Since 2016, the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics has been publishing the assessment results on an annual basis. Having determined that the monitoring of well-being in Israel should employ complementary indices relating to its sustainability, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Bank of Israel, the Central Bureau of Statistics, and Yad Hanadiv asked the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities to establish an expert committee to draft recommendations on this issue. The Academy's assistance was sought in recognition of its statutory authority "to advise the government on activities relating to research and scientific planning of national significance." The Committee was appointed by the President of the Academy, Professor Nili Cohen, in March 2017; its members are social scientists spanning a variety of disciplines. This report presents the Committee's conclusions. Israel's ability to ensure the well-being of its citizens depends on the resources or capital stocks available to it, in particular its economic, natural, human, social, and cultural resources. At the heart of this report are a mapping of these resources, and recommendations for how to measure them.
