Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThanks to a socio-economic and geopolitical analysis, empirically based on Brazil as an emerging power and international information processing, this work aims to understand the strategic place occupied by Brazil on the international scene. As part of this analytical approach, the study also aims to demonstrate and update the links between economic development and information flow.We discuss the international political situation in Brazil under the presidency of Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva (from 2003 to 2010), a period that allowed to continue and amplify a process of economic growth already under way. We will analyze the communication strategy put in place by the presidency of the republic. The place won by Brazil, not only among the most influential of emerging countries, but mainly its positioning in the face of global changes, allows to open this analysis on a comparative perspective. As well as in relation with other emerging countries, those of Mercosul and the role of the BRICS.This thesis will hold international information as an object of sociological research in its own right, while considering it as an original prism of global understanding of the place occupied by this country in the world
Kwok, Wai Paik. „Subordinate—leader trust in mergers and acquisitions in multicultural emerging economies“. Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018AIXM0229.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation illuminates trust in new subordinate—leader relationships arising from mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in multicultural emerging economies. A large body of researchers has probed the notorious M&A failure rate of over 50%. Complexity and uncertainty characterize post-acquisition integration including for the personnel. Trust is a key success factor. Building on research into the cultural perspective of M&As, three related essays address a knowledge gap in trust and cultural dynamics when integrating firms with multicultural personnel. Essay 1 develops a theoretical framework of multicultural acquired-firm subordinate trust in foreign acquirer leaders, based on ethnic or religious similarity. The M&A concept of multiculturalism is combined with self-categorization and similarity-attraction theories to explicate how subordinates alleviate integration uncertainty to develop trust. Essay 2 tests religious (dis)similarity—trust hypotheses from this framework, moderated by three acquisition-specific factors. Policy-capturing data from 411 multifaith Malaysian personnel demonstrates the nuanced role of religion as a catalyst (constraint) of trust in cross-border M&As. Essay 3 examines the cultural and trust dynamics in two case studies, comparing a domestic Malaysian acquisition and a South African—Malaysian acquisition. Abductive analysis of 35 interviews of acquirer and acquired-firm personnel reveals that managerial boundary spanning facilitated subordinate—leader trust development. Paradoxically, integrating the domestic rather than cross-border acquisition was more complex when within-country religious diversity and linguistic diversity are considered

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis focuses on the role played by mass media in the construction of the public personality of emerging leaders. When a political party chooses a new leader, this leader is often known by very few people. Since a majority of citizens rarely has the occasion to interact directly with political figures, it is exclusively through the media that most people are able to get acquainted with those who represent them – and with those who aspire to play that role. But the media do not only repeat what politicians say. The pieces of information they decide to include in their stories, the words they use, and the frames they select contribute to the definition of the public personality of the leaders they talk about. News media also choose to put the emphasis on particular personality traits, and to ignore others. In order to have a better understanding of this phenomenon, we have studied the case of former Parti québécois leader, André Boisclair. We have tried to determine if the coverage he was object of has been stable over time, or if it has followed cycles, and we have studied the criteria used by the media to assess his personality. To achieve these ends, we have studied the volume, the format, the tone, the objects and the frames, which have characterized the coverage broadcasted on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the TVA Network between June 4, 2005 and February 21, 2007 about André Boisclair. Our conclusions show that the coverage indeed follows cycles, and that the criteria used by the news media are very similar to those which have already been identified as important to the public in the selection of a political leader.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleUnderstanding what can influence a leader to demonstrate transformational leadership behaviours has intrigued researchers and practitioners for several years (Bommer, Rubin, & Baldwin, 2004; Bono & Judge, 2004; Shamir & Howell, 1999; Stogdill, 1948; Yukl, 1999). Yet, until now, these factors were little researched and poorly understood in comparison to the consequences of this type of leadership. Along these lines, this thesis answers to numerous issues raised by authors on this topic (Dinh & Lord, 2012; Zaccaro, 2007) by seeking to clarify the role of different individual and situational antecedents of transformational leadership. This objective is pursued through the adoption of an interactionist perspective which integrates individual and contextual antecedents to the assessment of personality supported by a criterion-centric personality model (compound variable). This thesis is composed of three articles that pursue the following objectives: 1) Review empirical literature on individual and contextual antecedents of transformational leadership; 2) Validate the empirical links between a new personality model (i.e. compound variable) and transformational leadership; 3) Test empirically the correlations between personality and contextual variables to predict transformational leadership. The first article aims to review and organize the current empirical knowledge from more than forty articles regarding transformational leadership indicators. The article is built on three major themes: the individual personality factors, the contextual elements and the study of the interaction between both. Multiple findings and research leads are discussed and set the stage for the following articles. In turn, the second article investigates the explanatory potential of a criterion-centric personality model to predict leadership. Specifically, the Great Eight model, put forward by Bartram (2005) is leveraged to understand the relationships between behaviours tied to transformational and transactional leadership. Results from a survey of 113 managers and their 799 subordinates provide little support for the explanatory value of this model, but indicate that some personality traits are associated with leadership. Further analysis allows us to put the results in perspective with the academic literature and provide some insights regarding the potential for some personality trait groupings to predict leadership behaviours. The third article builds on the traits activation theory (Tett & Burnett, 2003) to validate the combined effects of a manager’s personality and the context in which he or she operates to predict transformational leadership. The results ((nmanagers = 89; nsubordinates = 643) offer limited support to the rationale underlying the traits activation theory. Yet, it appears a manager’s relational traits (operationalized by the personality compound variable “supporting and cooperating”) are correlated to demonstrations of transformational leadership, when contextual factors (organizational consideration, decision latitude) are perceived positively by the manager. As a result, this research sheds some light on an element of variability put forth in previous studies regarding a manager’s relational inclinations by highlighting its sensitivity to positive contextual factors.
