Annotation:
This comprehensive work examines the fundamentals required for reclaimed water schemes to deliver sustainable farming operations that achieve the yield and quality of produce necessary for acceptance in the market. Growing Crops with Reclaimed Wastewater reviews the historical background of water treatment, its use and disposal from Australian wastewater treatment facilities and the technologies now utilised to treat our wastewater for reuse. The major concerns of chemical, physical and pathological qualities of reclaimed water are addressed, ensuring that the environmental, economic and social requirements of today’s society are met. It reviews the state and national regulatory requirements and guidelines that have made Australia a world leader in the management of reclaimed water and also examines the guidance in the United States of America (Federal) and in California, the World Health Organization guidance and the situation in Israel. This is the first time such a definitive review has been produced on the use of wastewater for horticulture and it will be a key tool for decision makers, researchers and practitioners to understand the main issues and constraints. It will be of particular interest to agricultural scientists, waste and horticulture consultants, engineers, planners, state agencies, environmental officers and students.

Although there is a significant need to understand the implications of increasing demographic diversity for leadership, surprisingly little research has been conducted on the topic. In this chapter, we review the extant research in this area. We organize our review into three sections: how leaders lead themselves, others, and the organization. In the first section, we discuss issues related to social identity, and how leaders’ social identities interact with those of their employees in influencing what may be required for effective leadership. In the second section, we discuss the qualities that leaders are likely to need when managing employees from diverse backgrounds. We focus on developing quality relationships, cultivating an inclusive climate, spanning boundaries, and framing of diversity initiatives. In the last section, we discuss research related to the role leaders play in setting their organization’s diversity strategy, implementing diversity practices, managing conflict, responding to diversity crises, and measuring progress. We end with suggestions for future research.

Using examples from new religious movements ranging from the Children of God to Sahaja Yoga, the chapter takes a multi-disciplinary approach, reviewing insights from sociology, psychology, anthropology, and management theory. It focuses on charisma as the authority to lead and transform religious traditions, reviewing not only identified qualities of leaders, but also the role of followers in creating and maintaining a collective myth, as well as the importance of the situation and culture in which the relationship develops. Key concepts include legitimation strategies, charismatization, and the role of the “charismatic aristocracy.” Attention is paid to factors contributing to instability and violence, particularly related to the institutionalization of charisma known as routinization, as well as optimal conditions for “benevolent” and “diffuse” charisma.

This chapter first considers the means, from election to selection to nomination, by which IO leaders are (s)elected and the consequences of those methods. It is followed by a discussion on the qualities regarded as necessary for successful tenure, stressing the need for trust, expertise, and legitimacy. It then analyses the three roles that the leaders of IOs, to a greater or lesser extent, must play. They are diplomats dealing with state leaders and talking in international forums. They are politicians negotiating with the state representatives on a daily basis. They are managers heading an often large secretariat. How they balance these roles often determines their capacity to shape the outcomes of their organization.

Balot, Ryan. Was Thucydides a Political Philosopher? Herausgegeben von Sara Forsdyke, Edith Foster und Ryan Balot. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199340385.013.8.

Annotation:
Although he is not ordinarily interpreted as a philosopher, Thucydides enters into conversation with the canonical political philosophers by engaging with the question of the good life lived within a well-ordered society. Displaying the conceptions of the good society presented by leading Athenians and Spartans, Thucydides emphasizes their illusory, self-destructive qualities. If those political leaders are at least qualified utopians, then Thucydides is an anti-utopian who views human history as a world of war. Thucydides’ History highlights the suffering caused by the tendency of human beings, and especially political leaders, to aggrandize themselves. In the absence of durable customs, laws, and political institutions, we can hope, at most, for a decent life supported by resilience and guided by political prudence. More ambitious political aspirations will inevitably cause greater harm than benefit.

The chapter begins with a discussion of Daoist virtues that lead to human flourishing and the Daoist conception of how a life goes well, what it shows about, and implies for, people’s relationship to the natural world of plants, animals, and environment. Humans are not distinct from these other life forms; rather, they are all “living beings” composed of qi (vital energy or life force). Qualities such as ziran (spontaneity or naturalness) lead to a relationship with animals characterized by care and nurture. According to the chapter, Daoists are more likely to be “responsible gardeners, farmers, and foresters” than “eco-warriors.” Nevertheless, the environmental ethic inspired by this tradition shows promise for creating real change in the world.

The property which perceptual experiences of a given phenomenal kind enable the subject to track is not always identical with the property objects appear to have (in a phenomenally manifest manner) in the kind of experience at issue. Tracked properties and apparent properties come apart in colour perception but they are identical in the perception of three-dimensional shape. In order to defend these claims, this chapter proposes a criterion for the identity of tracked property and apparent property in a given experience. The view developed leads to an account of the traditional distinction between primary and secondary qualities. In order to capture what it is to instantiate a given secondary quality, one must specify the phenomenal kind of perceptual experience an instantiation of the property would render veridical.

Recent developments in brain sciences and social psychology lead to a model focused on the communication channels between I-positions, connecting self with other, reason with emotion, and the conscious with the nonconscious as basic polarities of positioning. Emotional and reasoning positions, like conscious and nonconscious positions, are considered as mutually complementing opposites in both self and other. In this model the communication channels are of crucial importance as their features and qualities determine whether the positions are involved in competition or cooperation, conflict or harmony, suppress or support each other, create coalitions or retreat in isolation. A diversity of phenomena are explored, including theory of mind, hemispheric differentiation, empathy, somatic markers, body illusions, racial prejudices, difference between emotion and feeling, and cultural aspects of brain functioning.

An expanded position model is presented that enables to study the following features of the self as society: meta-positions as “leadership” positions in the self, offering a broad and long-term scope in a multipositioned, democratically organized self; promoter positions stimulating its further development; power distance and emotional distance as basic dimensions in the mini-society of the self; the accessibility of I-positions allowing a free entrance so that they can be experienced in their inside qualities; their exit providing a way to leave a position and preventing the feeling of being locked up in an I-prison; a procedure to get in touch with “shadow” positions as undesirable or rejected parts of the self; and different types of boundaries of positions (soft, rigid, spongy, and flexible), with flexible ones as optimal for the communication between I-positions in complex social and societal situations.

Gods are agents believed to be largely free from the constraints that limit the agency of humans, and have been imagined with features that frequently collide with the theological expectations nurtured by contemporary monotheistic religions. Traditionally, gods have demanded offerings, which create a relation of interdependence between gods and humans. Divine qualities can be understood as produced by the projection of intensified human characteristics upon imaginary beings, by means of two processes: the desire to leave behind the limitations that afflict us, and the inescapable tendency to conceive the world as if it were populated by beings analogous to us. In order to understand the gods, therefore, one must focus on the unresolvable tension between the gratuitousness and the deliberateness of their deeds; between their neediness and their self-sufficiency; between their human-like nature and their otherness; between their omniscience and the realization that their minds cannot but be like ours.

Annotation:
This chapter compares play with other behaviors in order to develop a general understanding of play. Before proceeding with the discussion of play v. other behaviors, it considers the six perspectives about play: play as action, play as interaction, play as activity, play as disposition, play as experience, and play as context. It then examines play's defining qualities by contrasting it to three similar but rival patterns of willfully directed behavior: work, ritual, and the form of bonding and immersion called communitas. These behaviors together with play are said to be distinctive “pathways of experience” featuring different acts of meaning-construction and self-expression. Each pathway is presented as an ideal type—first play, and then the other forms in comparison to play. Differences between the four forms are summarized and displayed in a chart. The chapter concludes by explaining how real-life events usually feature combinations of these four forms, as well as alternations in which one pattern leads to another.

Lyons, John D. Montaigne and History. Herausgegeben von Philippe Desan. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190215330.013.13.

Annotation:
Montaigne declared that history was his favorite reading, but his views of history and of the best way to write about it differed considerably from those of contemporary historians. When historians such as Jean Bodin and Étienne Pasquier were emphasizing such historiographical qualities as critical evaluation of accounts of the past, accounts of national origins, periodization, distinct hierarchies of events separating the important from the unimportant, and continuity of major political trends, Montaigne sought to read and record unusual and striking events, regardless of the social importance of the individuals involved. He pioneered a form of historical explanation that emphasized character and private life against event and public performance. Montaigne’s attention was drawn to moments of suspense that would lead to decisive outcomes, and his use of history anticipates developments in early modern literature and drama in the domains of plausibility and dramatic suspense.

Derrick, Stephanie L. The Fame of C. S. Lewis. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198819448.001.0001.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This book considers the history of British literary scholar, author and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis’s fame from the 1940s through the present and compares his contrasting patterns of reception in Britain and America. Lewis was both an esteemed literary figure and a divisive personality among his colleagues at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, who recognized his penchant for projecting a persona. It took the outbreak of the Second World War and invitations from Christian leaders to draw Lewis into crafting popular Christian apologetics. Yet Lewis’s reasons for writing books that were accessible to a broad audience, including his children’s books, were rooted in a literary theory informed by his early reading life in Edwardian Belfast and his objections to literary modernism. The reception of Lewis’s popular works in America was shaped by the fact that American readers did not appreciate Lewis’s literary and cultural context. His posthumous fame, furthermore, should be accredited in part to factors independent of the qualities of his work: e.g. the publishing history of his books, the rise of visual media, the history of evangelicalism, and the manipulation of his legacy by the C. S. Lewis Estate. The evolution of rival portraits of Lewis as a Christian apologist and a children’s author is equally part of this story. Lewis’s platform as a contrarian Christian resisting modernity and his reactions to the intellectual, social, and religious changes of his day made the critical difference to his disparate transatlantic receptions.
