Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe amount of organizations that choose to work with sustainability is increasing due to the potential competitiveness it causes. Working with sustainability may include sustainability evaluations, which can be done through the LCSA analysis method. The purpose of this report is to evaluate and analyze a manufacturing company's current climate impact due to carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from diesel-powered forklifts within internal material handling. Further, the report aims to illustrate how a sustainability evaluation can be conducted to identify ecological, economic and social impact. In the report, a sustainability evaluation of forklift systems is performed to identify the theoretically best alternative, compared to a case company's current situation. The method used for the sustainability evaluation is LCSA analysis. In addition to the results of the sustainability evaluation, the interface between theoretically and practically best forklift system alternatives is considered. The case company Volvo GTO in Skövde, currently have 18 diesel-powered forklifts, which have different capacities and functions. The current fuel for all forklifts is Diesel Mk1. The flows today generally set high demands on the forklifts technical capacity, for example on, travel speed, climbing ability, traction force and lifting and lowering speed. In the year 2017, the 18 diesel-powered forklifts contributed with a climate impact of approximately 237 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents, considering the entire life cycle of Diesel Mk1 and the forklift fleets total run time. Regarding the sustainability evaluation LCSA analysis, it is performed on forklift systems powered by Diesel Mk1, HVO-Diesel, lead acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries within the capacities 3.5, 5 and 8-tonne. The analysis considers the three pillars of sustainability. Further, the technical specifications of the forklift systems are considered and compared with the current diesel-powered fleet. Generally, a lower technical capacity can be seen in the electric forklift systems, which may affect the ability to implement those at the case company. Theoretically lowest ecological and social impact can be seen within the lithium-ion battery-powered forklift systems, the lowest impact on the economic pillar is seen in the lead acid battery systems. Based on the case company's current flows and demands, the authors recommend HVO-Diesel-powered forklift systems, as they have the same technical capabilities as well as lower ecological and social impacts. Limitations has been set for the reports analyzes, regarding process boundaries and impact indicators. For future sustainability evaluations, the authors recommend that wider process boundaries and more impact indicators are applied to identify the total impact within the pillars of sustainability. The report comprehends examples of impact beyond selected process boundaries, such as emissions affecting over time or exploitation. During the progress of this report, information gaps have been discovered in different areas. Regarding research of sustainability evaluations, proven methods are lacking. Therefore, established methods for evaluation are desired. A gap in research of forklift theory has also been noted.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe Littoral Combat Ship's (LCS) minimally manned core crew goal is 15 to 50 manpower requirements and the threshold, for both core and mission-package crews, is 75 to 110. This dramatically smaller crew size will require more than current technologies and past lessons learned from reduced manning initiatives. Its feasibility depends upon changes in policy and operations, leveraging of future technologies and increased Workload Transfer from sea to shore along with an increased acceptance of risk. A manpower requirements analysis yielded a large baseline (200) requirement to support a notional LCS configuration. Combining the common systems from the General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin designs with other assumed equipments (i.e. the combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) engineering plant) produce the notional LCS configuration used as the manpower requirements basis. The baseline requirement was reduced through the compounded effect of manpower savings from Smart Ship and OME and suggested paradigm shifts. A Battle Bill was then created to support the notional LCS during Conditions of Readiness I and III. An efficient force deployment regime was adopted to reduce the overall LCS class manpower requirement. The efficiency gained enables the LCS force to "flex" and satisfy deployment requirements with 25% to 30% fewer manpower requirements over the "one-forone" crewing concept. costs $60K.

Der volle Inhalt der QuellePoly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) is a polyelectrolyte which has been rather scarcely investigated in the literature, despite its various and very interesting physical properties. The behavior of PMAA solutions is drastically different from the one displayed by the extensively studied poly(acrylic acid), due to the methyl group located in the alpha position of the carboxylic acid function. At low ionization degrees in aqueous solvent, synergetic effects resulting from both hydrophobic interactions (methyl groups) and intramolecular hydrogen bonds between acidic groups are responsible for the hypercoiled conformation of the PMAA chains. Nevertheless, above a critical ionization degree, the PMAA macromolecule behaves as an extended chain similar to a usual highly charged polyelectrolyte. The main purpose of this work is to correlate the rheological properties to the structure of the chains for semi-dilute solutions of PMAA.In the semi-dilute regime, above a critical concentration, PMAA solutions display a sharp increase in their viscosity over time under shear. This phenomenon known as antithixotropy occurs only when the macromolecules adopt a hypercoiled conformation. The influence of both concentration and ionization degree on the rheological behavior of PMAA solutions was studied. Shear induces the formation of intermolecular bonds which are responsible for the formation of a physical gel. We have demonstrated that the critical shear stress at which the gel is formed does not depend on the concentration. Interestingly, the results obtained remind some features observed in the case of the shear thickening of charged colloids.Neutral PMAA chains in water also display a Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) around 67 $^{circ}$C. The reorientational dynamics of water molecules above the LCST was studied by means of NMR experiments, which evidenced the dehydration of the polymer coils during phase separation. The formation of interfaces between polymer-rich and polymer-poor domains was investigated by small-angle neutron scattering experiments. A possible mechanism describing the transition at the molecular level was derived from the results obtained throughout the use of complementary experimental approaches. This mechanism is very similar to the one proposed for the LCST transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The cloud point temperature of PMAA solutions is the same as the gel temperature at which a viscoelastic gel is formed.The understanding of the behavior of PMAA solutions under shear as well as under temperature is an essential prerequisite to the design of PMAA/silica nanocomposites. These nanocomposites were are prepared in the solution state. The interactions between PMAA chains and silica were clearly increased by the functionalization of the silica particles. Such interactions between PMAA and filler particles were found to be related to the pH of the solutions, due to the nature of the chemical groups at the surface of the functionalized silica. A possible perspective to this work would be the correlation between the structural features of the nanocomposites and their rheological properties during the drying process

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleTemperature-responsive surface-attached hydrogel thin films with various LCST/UCST (Lower/Upper Critical Solution Temperature) were designed for specific applications. The chemical polymer networks covalently attached on plane solid substrates were synthesized by a versatile and straightforward approach using thiol-ene click chemistry. It consists in coating ene-reactive polymers and dithiol crosslinkers on thiol-modified substrates, the thiol-ene click reaction allowing simultaneous cross-linking between chains and grafting on the surface. The CLAG (Cross-Linking And Grafting) strategy provides chemically stable and reproducible hydrogel films with a wide range of thickness and with the desired temperature-responsive properties. Ene-functionalized hydrophilic polymers can be synthesized using free radical copolymerization of the desired monomer with allyl methacrylate in organic solvent or co-solvent with water. Another way is the synthesis in water in two steps: the desired monomer is copolymerized with acrylic acid and then the copolymer is post-modified by amidification. Three polymer families were investigated: poly(PEGMA), poly(acrylamide) derivatives and poly(zwitterions). The transition temperature of the hydrogel films is determined by measuring the thickness in aqueous solutions at different temperatures with ellipsometry. Poly(PEGMA) hydrogel films show LCST properties with the transition temperature increasing with the number of PEG units. The LCST ranges from 15 °C to 60 °C with two to five PEG units in the pendant chains. The LCST can also be adjusted using mixed copolymers hydrogel. Poly(acrylamide) derivatives hydrogel films have both LCST and UCST properties. Poly(sulfobetaine) hydrogel films show very interesting UCST behavior in addition to be anti-fouling, which is very promising for biology applications

Der volle Inhalt der QuellePolymeric membranes are mostly prepared by phase separation processes requiring high quantities of organic solvents. A new process of membrane preparation is developed in this work and aims at replacing the organic solvents by water, using water soluble polymer. This process, called LCST-TIPS process, consists in coupling a phase separation by increasing temperature until a critical temperature (Lower Critical Solution Temperature – LCST). The cross-linking of the polymer chains has to be performed to obtain insoluble membrane. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/water system was used in this work and a chemical cross-linking using glutaraldehyde in acid medium was performed to fix the membrane structure. First, phase separation and cross-linking were studied separately by UV analysis, turbidimetry and light scattering and by monitoring the gelation during cross-linking using rheological measurements. Membranes were then prepared by coupling the whole phenomena, i.e. phase inversion, cross-linking, solvent evaporation and the effect of formulation and process parameters was studied on PVA membrane morphologies. Composition paths were simulated by modeling mass transfer phenomena during elaboration and were linked to the cross-linking kinetics in order to investigate the link between membrane morphologies and operating conditions.
