Enriching table eggs with certain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids is an ongoing topic. Therefore, the aforementioned research was carried out with the aim of examining the possibility of feeding laying hens with ground flax seed, flax cake and flaxseed oil and their influence on the ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids of table eggs, as well as on certain production parameters. The experiment was set up in a production facility with 192 consuming laying hens 27 weeks old. The laying hens were divided into 4 groups: control group; group fed with flax cake (10%) + flax oil (2%); a group fed with 5% ground flax and a group fed with 10% ground flax. Each group had 8 cages with 6 laying hens, a total of 48 laying hens per group. The production parameters presented in this paper are as follows: number of eggs per laying hen , egg weight and yolk weight. Egg quality indicators were determined at the end of the 5th and 10th week from the start of the experiment, namely: pH of egg white and yolk, polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids ratio, as well as omega-3 and omega-3 fatty acids ratio. The results of the study showed that the inclusion of flax cake, flax oil and ground flaxseed had no negative effects on the shown production parameters and that there was a positive effect of these nutrients on the ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in table eggs.

Long-distance migrants may be particularly vulnerable to climate change on both wintering and breeding grounds. However, the relative importance of climatic variables at different stages of the annual cycle is poorly understood, even in well-studied Palaearctic migrant species. Using a national dataset spanning 46 years, we investigate the impact of wintering ground precipitation and breeding ground temperature on breeding phenology and clutch size of 19 UK migrants. Although both spring temperature and arid zone precipitation were significantly correlated with laying date, the former accounted for 3.5 times more inter-annual variation. Neither climate variable strongly affected clutch size. Thus, although carry-over effects had some impact, they were weaker drivers of reproductive traits than conditions on the breeding grounds.

This study develops a blocked cost model of urban rail transit, which is applied to determine laying mode of urban rail transit. In addition, this model focuses on the laying mode choice of urban rail transit by using quantitative analysis, which is previously discussed by using qualitative analysis. The case of Line No. 1 of Shijiazhuang urban rail transit is given to demonstrate the blocked cost. The results show that the cost of urban rail transit on the ground is 0.372 billion RMB per km and the cost of urban rail transit underground is 1.79 billion RMB per km. The mode on the ground is the best solution due to its low cost. But by analyzing and evaluating generalized cost in which blocked cost has been considered, the mode of urban railway transit underground is the best choice due to 1.79 billion RMB per km compared to 1.91 billion RMB per km on the ground.

Lung cancer is the main cause of death by cancer worldwide. Despite the variety of available treatments, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immune therapy, the average 5-year survival is 60%. One of the underlying reasons is a very high variability in patients’ susceptibility to treatment, explained by genetic background and since recently – our microbiota. The term microbiota includes bacteria, archaea, fungi, viruses and protists that inhabit our organism. The studies in animal models show that the gut microbiota (focused on bacteria) has a crucial role in host’s responsiveness to therapy through the stimulation of immune system. In this light, several “communication axes” between the gut and distal tumour sites have started to develop, including the “gut-lung” axis. However, the resident microbiota in the lungs that could directly influence the tumour response and interact with the gut microbiota has been scarcely characterised. To enable further development of the idea of the “gut-lung-lung cancer” axis, we included 18 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients eligible for surgery and analysed the microbiota from four different lung samples (non-malignant, peritumoural and tumour tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid; BAL), saliva and faeces by high-throughput sequencing. We also analysed several immune markers, as lymphocytic tumour infiltrate, Th and neutrophil profiles and cytokines in BAL and blood, and inflammatory markers in faeces along with short-chain fatty acids. Focusing first on the lungs, we show that BAL microbiota represents a significantly distinct community compared to lung tissue microbiota by providing detailed characterisation of the four different lung samples. Since tumours in lower lobes are reported as the ones with the worse prognosis, we investigated how the lobe location affected the microbiota composition. Peritumoural tissue and BAL microbiota were identified as the most affected in both abundance and diversity, and tumour as the least affected. However, phylum Firmicutes, previously reported as elevated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease compared to controls, was found more abundant in microbiota from lower lung lobes. Therefore, we propose that both increase in Firmicutes and extensive changes in peritumoural tissue could be associated to increased aggressiveness of the lower lobe tumours. Next, we show that the presence of metastatic lymph nodes (LN), negative prognostic marker in NSCLC, significantly influence the local tissue microbiota in relation to its respiratory profile. We reported that anaerobic bacteria were more abundant within the tumour in the presence of metastatic LN, and aerobic bacteria within the one without it. Moreover, exactly inverse was observed for the same bacteria in extratumoural tissues. Along with migratory hypothesis depending on the bacterial preference for growth conditions shaped by tumour’s features, we propose several biomarkers for detection of metastatic LN that might facilitate their detection without imposing LN biopsy. Finally, we showed that BAL microbiota is the most associated to the local immune response and independent of the presence of metastatic LN. Future research will focus on the exploration of the interaction between the lung microbiota, systemic immunity and the gut microbiota

Archaeobotanical evidences for the presence of wild plants at Fremont archaeological sites are numerous. However, little can be positively argued for why those plants are present, if they were used by site inhabitants, and how they were used. Additionally, there are likely several wild plants that were used but that do not appear in the archaeobotanical record as pollen or macrobotanicals, the two most commonly identified plant remains. I argue that it is possible to provide better interpretations for how and why the Fremont used plants by researching how their historic counterparts, the Goshute, Shoshone, Ute, and Southern Paiute, used the same plants that are identified at prehistoric sites. I further argue that a phytolith typology for Fremont archaeology can provide more insight into prehistoric plant use. I demonstrate its utility through a phytolith analysis of ground stone tools from Wolf Village, a Fremont site in Utah County.

This project was undertaken to establish whether the Onderstepoort Biological Products Fowl Typhoid (OBPft) vaccine registered as an injectable vaccine was effective and safe when administered orally to commercial layers. Its efficacy and duration of protection were compared to the intramuscular injectable route. Commercial brown layer hens were used as they were found to be highly susceptible to Salmonella gallinarum infections. In the safety trial birds were euthanased at timed intervals spanning 4-weeks post vaccination. Necropsies were performed and samples were taken and tested. No clinical signs or mortalities could be attributed to the OBPft vaccine. No active shedding of the vaccine strain could be detected. Slight pathological changes were noted with both routes of vaccination; however these changes were transient, returning to normal within the observation period. The injected group showed a better serological response with the serum agglutination test than the orally vaccinated groups. In the duration of protection trial the two routes of vaccination were compared, the birds were challenged at three 8-week intervals post vaccination. All the unvaccinated birds died. The protection offered to the vaccinated groups was good when birds were challenged 8 and 16-weeks after vaccination. However, this dipped steeply by the challenge 24-weeks post vaccination. Statistically (ANOVA, p<0.05) it was found that there was no significant difference between the protection offered by either the oral or injected route of vaccination with the OBPft vaccine.

Annotation:
The aim of this work is to study the cohomology with twisted coefficients of the geometric realization of linking systems. More precisely, if (S, Ƒ, ℒ) is a p-local finite group, we work on the cohomology H*(\ℒ\, M) of the geometric realization of ℒ with coefficients in a Z(p)[π₁(\ℒ\)]-module M and its links with the Ƒᶜ-stables H*(Ƒᶜ, M) ⊆ H*(S, M) trough the inclusion of BS in \ℒ\. After we give the definition of Ƒᶜ-stable elements , we study the endomorphism of H*(S, M) induced by an Fc-characteristic (S, S)-biset and we show that, if the action is nilpotent- and we assume an hypothesis, we have a natural isomorphism H*(\ℒ\, M) ≌ H* (Fᶜ;M). Secondly, we look at p-solvable actions of π₁(\ℒ\) on M through the notion of p-local subgroups of index a power of p or prime to p. If the action factors through a p'-group, we show that there si also a natural isomorphism. We then work on extending this to any-p-solvable action and we get some positive answer then the p-local finite groupis realizable. Theses leads to the conjecture that it is true for any-p-local finite group and any-p-solvable actions. We also give some tools to study this conjecture on examples. We look at products of p-local finite groups with Kunneth Formula and linking system which can be decomposed in a way which behaves well with Mayer-Vietoris long exact sequence. Finally, we study essential subgroups of wreath productsby Cp. We finish with some examples which illustrate that, in general, we cannot hope an isomorphism between H*(\ℒ\, M) and H*(Ƒᶜ, M)

Woodward, Ian David. „Cable laying ambush games“. Thesis, University of Southampton, 2002. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/50612/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
A cable laying ambush game is a two-person zero-sum game in which one player wishes to cross some interval while the other player has n cables that he can lay within the interval to ambush the infiltrator. In the literature solutions have been found for some cases in continuous and discrete cable laying ambush games when n = 2. The culmination of this thesis gives a complete solution for this much studied two cable game. However, prior to this numerous important results are established for the n cable game. It is first shown that the continuous game always possesses a value. This is done by showing that optimal strategies in a new finite game are also optimal in the continuous game. Further to this it is then shown that the discrete game can also be reduced to the same finite game and thus shown that it is equivalent to a finite game. This enables us to find many new results in both games. We also carry out much computational work enabling us to convert games into linear programmes and thus find the game value and optimal strategies. Using these techniques, we produce numerous new results in the three cable ambush game. Analysis of the game value function is then carried out which shows that it is a lower semi-continuous function and enables us to show how the game can be divided into regions which share the same value. By combining these with strategies in special cases for the ambusher, we produce a complete solution for the two cable game without having to calculate strategies for the infiltrator.

AbstractHuman rights have been facing criticism on many fronts, including the challenges of the “enforcement gap” and the “citizenship gap”, laying bare the shortcomings with regard to the implementation of human rights law as well as regarding its protection of highly vulnerable groups such as refugees. Research on the effectiveness of human rights, the “localisation” of human rights through invocations and practices on the ground, the increased engagement of local authorities with human rights, are all responses to such challenges to some degree. Based on empirical research conducted within municipalities in four countries, this chapter focuses on a missing piece of the puzzle in terms of conceptual and empirical research: the role of “individual agency”. We adopt a socio-legal perspective on human rights and demonstrate that individual agency can make an important contribution to the effective implementation of human rights in the field of migration governance. Behind the black box of the state and local authorities, we find individuals who use human rights—as law, practice and discourse—in local policymaking, in circumstances where invoking human rights is not self-explanatory. Finally, we put forward the notion that reasons such as individual background, motivations, and interactions between individuals influence municipal officials’ engagement with human rights, and we reflect on the conceptual and practical implications that result from this.

Recently, electricity demand is rising steeply with advance of science. Additionally quantity of cables such as telephone and optical fiber is rising with communications development and increase of residence. These cables are untidily wired in the air with telephone pole. They impair cityscape and disturb pedestrian safety. Therefore improvement of procedures installing cables is requested. In order to solve it, the plan [1] which buries cables protected in pipes under ground is progressing. They are called buried pipes and consist of straight pipe made from stainless steel or plastic. However there is concern that the buried pipe is crushed and broken by the complex load due to earthquake and ground subsidence. Thus, it is necessary to develop the buried pipe with function of flexibly against damage or rupture. We focus attention to U-type bellows pipe with function of flexibly. In this study, we conduct tensile, compressive, bending test and numerical analysis of those tests using finite element method. From result, we investigate for the relationship between mechanical characteristic and deformation behavior. We study application of bellows pipe to buried pipe. In this study, we examined and analyzed deformation behavior when axial load and bending moment were given to specimens. Examinations items are as (1) we measured load, elongation bending radius by using are experimental device which modeled ground subsidence. (2) We obtained deformation behavior by numerical analysis by using constituted equations of solid mechanics. (3) We conducted simulation analysis of models constructed by finite element method. By comparing these three items, the deformation behavior is clarified.

The goal of this project was to explore how explicit instruction in spatial reasoning in primary grades can contribute to reductions in variation in STEM outcomes for low-income, minority students in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Our project focused on the persistent gender, racial and ethnic, and socioeconomic inequalities in STEM educational and career achievement and attainment. Our approach to addressing this problem was guided by research evidence that much of the variation in STEM outcomes for these groups can be explained by spatial reasoning abilities. Importantly, spatial reasoning skills can be improved through practice, but are rarely explicitly taught in the classroom. The spatial reasoning needs and opportunities identified by this work are relevant to CPS in that they focus on the prevalent science, math, and computer science curricula currently used in CPS K-2 instruction. As such, our findings provide specific, actionable guidance for the development of curricular supports that infuse explicit spatial reasoning instruction.
