±3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a popular recreational drug that enhances sociability and feelings of closeness with others. These “prosocial” effects appear to motivate the recreational use of MDMA and may also form the basis of its potential as an adjunct to psychotherapy. However, the extent to which MDMA differs from prototypic stimulant drugs, such as dextroamphetamine, methamphetamine, and methylphenidate, in either its behavioral effects or mechanisms of action, is not fully known. The purpose of this review is to evaluate human laboratory findings of the social effects of MDMA compared to other stimulants, ranging from simple subjective ratings of sociability to more complex elements of social processing and behavior. We also review the neurochemical mechanisms by which these drugs may impact sociability. Together, the findings reviewed here lay the groundwork for better understanding the socially enhancing effects of MDMA that distinguish it from other stimulant drugs, especially as these effects relate to the reinforcing and potentially therapeutic effects of the drug.

In the summer of 2023, I received a surprising proposition from TURBA's managing editor, Dena Davida, inviting me to republish the chapter I contributed to the 2019 Curating Live Arts anthology (Davida et al. 2019) and reframe it in the context of the present issue. I accepted with enthusiasm, enticed by the opportunity to revisit an earlier piece of writing and understanding that such a privilege rarely presents itself to writers, let alone to early career writers! But as I gave the proposition more thought, I realized that it fittingly presented itself ten years after the inception of the curatorial project I discussed in my original text, Collective Walks / Spaces of Contestation. The exercise then provides an incentive to critically reflect on what has happened in the last decade, from both personal and socio-political perspectives. And indeed, there is much to take stock of. Re-reading my article, I am struck by the naiveté that transpires through the ideas I devised at the age of twenty- five, when I was taking my first leaps into the world of professional arts curation. Enamored with theory, unencumbered by convention, and moved by boundless energy, my younger self thought of artistic practice as a prism through which aesthetics can effectively mold the social. I wasn't so naïve as to believe that art can change the world, but I was convinced that the radical power of art lay in its capacity to disrupt, if only momentarily, the seemingly natural order of things. I thought of site-specific performance as a means to breach the surface of banal sociability. I conceived of aesthetic interventions into everyday life as tools for the creation of interstitial pockets of possibility.

The brotherhoods were catholic memberships that united themselves by interests and devotions in common about a protector saint, ensuring social insertion and protection. At the Modern Age, during the Catholic Reformation, it spread from Europe to the new-settlements territories arriving on the portuguese America, where it played a predominant role, mainly at the Capitania of Minas Gerais. To belong to a brotherhood meant to have guaranteed the legitimacy to the social and religious practices, because the Brotherhoods managed the local catholic rituals, built churches, stimulated artistic production and helped their members during their life and death, with distinct significance among the poor and needy. On the slavery context in addition to ensure hierarchical demarcations, allowed the development of a urban sociability and a greater participation of “colored men”, as well as contributed to the formation of the identities and the social settings, to the social interaction and ascension. This way, this present work’s proposal is to analyse a particular devotion, dedicated to the nossa Senhora das Mercês. On the XVIII century at Minas Gerais were founded twenty lay associations under this invocation, by the so called “black creoles”. Therefore, from a cultural perspective, we seek to comprehend the formation of the Nossa Senhora das Mercês cult and the distinct appropriations and redefinitions produced through time, appealing to the Brotherhoods sources, sermons and iconography.

Abstract In this article, I will revert to the categories of ‘fitness’ and ‘sociability’ to ask whether a ‘Grotian moment for animal sociability’ can be conceptualized. Grotius claims that we share a core of fundamental laws with animals. Building upon a passage from Seneca’s De clementia, Grotius calls these laws ‘commune ius animantium’, i.e. the common law of living beings. These shared legal entitlements, based on a shared sense of innate fitness, show that a certain care of maintaining society (‘animal sociability’) is common to all living beings. However, as I will show, humans, as the only beings capable of speech and moral deliberation, remain the only translators and enforcers of this instinct into a language of rights. From this perspective, it can be argued that a ‘Grotian tradition’ of animal rights exists, as Grotius’s reliance on the ‘common law of living beings’ can be interpreted in a progressive manner. However, I will argue that animal sociability qualifies as a ‘non-Grotian moment’: sociability as owed to animals but only in a thin sense, as it requires human judgment to be enforced into strict right. Such a ‘non-Grotian moment’ reveals that the deeply anthropocentric structure of Grotius’ theory is incapable of triggering any paradigm shift, because animals lack the capacity for judgment that is so essential to be a legal person.

This study examines the sociability practices implemented by male and female students in the Islamic Student Housing (ISH) of an Indonesian private university. Being a key component of Indonesian culture, sociability is accepting and respecting the presence of others in one’s environment. This culture is viewed as a component of local values that must be incorporated as a lesson for ISH residents. Male and female senior students are asked to engage in Focus Group Discussions to discuss their experiences living in a shared bedroom. The data are being analysed qualitatively with Atlas.ti to highlight the intercorrelated codes on the establishment of sociability mechanisms among residents. During their time in ISH, students engage in everyday activities that foster local values in sociability and strengthen their social connections with their roommates and housemates. The investigation revealed that the practices of sociability towards social connectivity is shaped not only by the spaces but also by the involvement of activities and rules applied. This study contributes to our understanding of spatial in architecture, notably the locality aspect of Indonesian sociability as its essential value.

This work treats the emergence and development of the sports sociableness in the Western Canary Islands in a period understood between 1850 and 1936. It is a work that comes from a theoretical and methodological perspective of socio-historical character, based on a view more inclusive and opened, own vision of the social sciences. This work is based on several conceptual theoretical premises: the reflexivity of social actors and assignment to a social field, own and specific; open concept sociability sense, going beyond the study of the associations; the complexity of the phenomenon studied, equipped with special features and localized in a Mediterranean context; as well as similarities with the theses of Guttmann (1977) and Elias and Dunning (1992). Thus, the chapters work serve different areas or ways of sociability, showing how they make their appearance and leisure unfold, physical and sports in each practice. So, the sociableness linked to recreative - cultural contexts, regeneracionist, military, sports teams, will be treated separately and in depth along the work. In this way, we show how and when to appear and sport is legitimized in each of the contexts studied. How it coexists with other existing or new practices. How this one coexists with other already existing or new practices. How and in that way the linked companies are constituted, like moderately formal and complex spaces of sociableness. Overall, it shows how, over the second half of the nineteenth century to germinate a process that begins to crystallize in the 1890s, through the establishment of the first sports clubs. . In forward, not only their number will increase, but the process will become more complex, resulting in an exchange of meanings and visions about sport and being far from the idea of linear progress, commonly established.

In a highly dynamic society such as we live, have access to the virtual world is an increasingly common practice, is aiming to study, work or to search leisure through chat rooms, sites and games, being incorporated by the most varied groups that end up appropriating these new possibilities of interaction, shaping them in order to adapt them to their needs / wants. The specific purposes pursued through the use of tools available over the Internet can vary considerably when one takes into account specific user groups, which makes the topic quite relevant to problematization, especially when we take into account access through lan houses. This research seeks to study the networks of knowledge, sociability and leisure formed by young people who frequented the "Lan house do Paulo" in S?o Gon?alo do Amarante - RN based on the use of the online role-playing-game World of Warcraft, which makes possible the interaction of several users through an avatar resident in a virtual world, theoretically questioning the importance of this type of platform for the development and maintenance of social interactions among its users

Understanding Neapolitan lay people’s faith in the sixteenth century is an arduous undertaking, both because of the material difficulties of accessing sources and because of their temporal discontinuity, which makes it difficult to carry out any historical systematic reconstruction based on the long term, orto study homogeneous series of sources. In spite of this reality, material difficulties have been overcome by systematically examining a wide variety of collections, both from the archdiocesan and state archivesof Naples, the General Curia (Curia Generalice) of the Society of Jesus, and the Holy See, using aqualitative methodology. The particular characteristics of a lay and urban piety were first privileged, then the analysis focused on the relations between laymen and ecclesiastics in the capital of the vice-kingdom of Spain before and after the Council of Trent. In fact, the diachronic approach chosen focuses on the "transitional century"of the history of the modern Catholic Church, that of the 16th century. From this thesis emerges the reconstruction of multiple religious identities of Neapolitan laymen and clergymen, as well as their way of apprehending religion and the Catholic Church, thanks to the precious elements provided by the examination of the Tridentine pastoral visits, or of the more or less repressive one of the minutes of the archdiocesan tribunals and of the "Neapolitan Inquisition" of the Holy Office. Thus, Neapolitans were reluctant to apply the Tridentine norms, increasing a context of growing social tension and religious criminalisation. This is also demonstrated by the essential sources for the historyof religious sensitivity, in this case the minutes of the vigil of capital executions of laymen, drawn up by the "clerks" of the Company of the Bianchi della Giustizia. Faced with this situation, strategies were implemented by the General Curia and those in charge of the Neapolitan Jesuit College, in order toreform religious life, which was very contrasted according to the sources of the Curia of the archdiocesetoo. Finally, laymen and clerics often made common cause in the face of attempts at Roman reform, which was not that different from most Catholic European cities. This thesis shows a city religion that is still "very medieval", - in all likelihood rooted in a Byzantine heritage -, testifying to strong local lay and ecclesiastical resistance, making the introduction of the new model of Christian life very laborious in the capital of the Kingdom of Naples until the 1598’s reformof Cardinal and Archbishop Alfonso Gesualdo

This thesis is based on the analysis of the social trajectory of one hundred and fifty to four landowners Tacaratú and Floresta, two towns in the region of Medio Sao Francisco, the interior of Pernambuco. The analysis of court documents and notary can put the characteristics of the social formation of the class property owners, in the period of implementation of the Land Act of 1850, when the Imperial Government of Brazil sought to implement changes economic and social importance, such as sales of public land to individuals. To do this, we propose to analyze the co-ownership of property that characterized many of the landowners. Comparative research has highlighted the social, political, cultural and economic of the members of traditional families in the region. Using an approach prosopographic and serial history, we established the social networks developed by this elite group, such as matrimonial network, the network and the network patrimonial bureaucratic politics. We found that these families of land owners were involved in the construction of this area of the hinterland, as socially dominant class and as members of the local government bureaucracy

E-teens, besides, demonstrate marked expertise in the use of these technologies. Although there have been various studies done on this group of users supported by models and theories on the use, gratifications and appropriation of new media technologies, the premise of this study was on two assumptions. First, there are limited studies that have been conducted in the sub-Saharan African context, especially, Ghana. Second, most available theories and models that guide the study of e-teens’ use, appropriation and the use of new media technologies are generalized and do not sufficiently highlight the unique attributes and gratification needs that are tied to their developmental stage. In light of these assumptions, the study was undertaken to provide empirical evidence on the types of new media e-teens have access to; the types of new media used by e-teens in their scheme of things and e-teens’ purposes for using new media. It also sought to find out the gratifications sought and obtained from the use of new media technologies by e-teens; the key features of new media appropriation and experience among e-teens and to identify the features of new media technologies which are most appealing to e-teens. The other objective, which serves as the main contribution of this study, was to develop a conceptual model representing new media use and appropriation among e-teens, thereby filling the theoretical or conceptual gap that exists in this context. The study adopted a quantitative approach whereby data was collected using close-5ended questionnaires. The target population were teens from age 13 to 19 in senior high schools in the Greater Accra region of Ghana, selected using a simple random sampling. The results of the study show that, overall, the most popular new media technology that e-teens had access to and owned was the smartphone. Leading among the apps that e-teens found to be appealing were educational, entertainment and information/news, with communicative and participatory features of new media technologies appealing to e-teens highly. Also, educational, sociability and social inclusion, respectively, were the most popular gratifications sought and obtained by e-teens. It is submitted that social inclusion, educational and sociability gratifications are considered to be directly in line with the unique developmental needs of e-teens. However, it is recommended, among other things, that educational use of new media, which was one of the strong points for new media use, should be further encouraged as new media provides borderless opportunities forlearning. The researcher believes that the conceptual model for e-teen use and appropriation of new media technologies provide a firm ground for further research on topics related to this subject matter. To provide support and substance to the e-teen model, other researchers are encouraged to test and extend it where necessary. In conclusion, the findings provide evidence that new media technologies are highly appropriated by e-teens because the technologies help them meet their unique gratification needs. Therefore, the study recommends that, although new media use among e-teens can be encouraged, it is important to ensure proper usage, which will not be detrimental to them.

Conversatio, mutual conduct, had possessed loose affiliations with sermo in ancient and medieval times. During the Renaissance, conversatio shifted far closer to sermo and its constellation of cognate concepts. Stefano Guazzo elaborated an influential theory of civil conversation in his eponymous late-sixteenth-century dialogue, which reconceived conversatio in secular terms as the realm of society. This Italian conception of civil conversation then received a universalizing spin from the natural law jurisprudential tradition of Grotius and Pufendorf, transforming it into an amoral disposition toward sociability shared by all humanity. The long parallel tracks of sermo and conversatio now finally converged: sermo became conversation as conversatio became sociability. The convergence of sermo and conversatio made possible the establishment of a causal connection between the two concepts. This connection appeared viadoux commerce, the application of sociability to the realm of economics: sociability, by the means of economic self-interest, became the conceptual and historical predicate to conversation—and, as the Enlightenment progressively tied together manners with the civic humanist tradition, the predicate in turn for both virtue and liberty. Sociability thus at last substituted for Platonic love an amoral, entirely human motivation for conversation—the discourse of reason found its base in human passions.

This chapter describes how police officers use specific choreographies, tools and rhetorics, that is, registers that evoke different moral orders: violence, law, social order, sociability, and the market. Even at the much-criticized traffic checks, police officers attempt to render their actions more legitimate by selecting and deselecting specific registers. In this view, stateness is not a substantial essence but a quality of the police that emerges out of this interplay of registers in everyday interactions.

This chapter examines Hugo Grotius' key political ideas. Grotius, one of the most prolific and erudite writers of the seventeenth century, sought to formulate a set of universal rights and duties that would secure peace by constraining states in their internal and external relations. Drawing on a wide range of philosophical and literary sources, including Roman law, ancient classics, theology, and poetry, Grotius rehabilitated the natural law in an attempt to achieve harmony in an increasingly splintered political environment. After providing a short biography of Grotius, the chapter analyses his views on natural law, natural rights, property rights, sociability, self-preservation, and social contracts. It also discusses Grotius' arguments regarding international order in the context of just war theory and punishment and concludes with an assessment of Grotius' legacy in the area of political thought.

Annotation:
This volume of A Cultural History of Ideas focuses on the culture of the Enlightenment, long believed a time of enormous intellectual innovation and ferment. However elusive the precise connection between ideas and culture in this period, the emergent mixture resonated throughout the West and beyond. This volume features essays by ten eminent scholars who consider nine different areas of intellectual investigation: knowledge, concepts of self, society and ethics, economics and politics, nature and natural law, religion, literature, the arts, and history. In all of these areas, Enlightenment culture meant the development of modern values sharply at odds with the Old Regime in which they were embedded. From the explosion of knowledge, so extensive that even great libraries could not maintain their approach to cataloging, to the disruption of any stable notion of the self, to artists’ experiments with replication, to the rise of “human rights” language, change was in the air. Further, a concern for empirical evidence meant reliance on experiments, systematic observation, and public presentations. These essays, with their many connections, reveal Enlightenment ideas and cultural innovations as products of a world expanded and rethought in the course of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a result of enhanced trade and exploration, new notions of sociability, a media revolution, and major political and economic developments.

This book is a study of solo performance in the UK and western Europe since the turn of millennium that explores the contentious relationship between identity, individuality and the demands of neoliberalism. With case studies drawn from across theatre, cabaret, comedy and live art – and featuring artists, playwrights and performers as varied as La Ribot, David Hoyle, Neil Bartlett, Bridget Christie and Tanja Ostojić – it provides an essential account of the diverse practices which characterize contemporary solo performance, and their significance to contemporary debates concerning subjectivity, equality and social participation. Beginning in a study of the arts festivals which characterize the economies in which solo performance is made, each chapter animates a different cultural trope – including the martyr, the killjoy, the misfit and the stranger – to explore the significance of ‘exceptional’ subjects whose uncertain social status challenges assumed notions of communal sociability. These figures invite us to re-examine theatre’s attachment to singular lives and experiences, as well as the evolving role of autobiographical performance and the explicit body in negotiating the relationship between the personal and the political. Informed by the work of scholars including Sara Ahmed, Zygmunt Bauman and Giorgio Agamben, this interdisciplinary text offers an incisive analysis of the cultural significance of solo performance for students and scholars across the fields of theatre and performance studies, sociology, gender studies and political philosophy.

This chapter examines gender norms and sexuality, drug use, and music—important signifiers of identity, sociability, and agency. In popular parlance, “sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll” often prompts thoughts of hippies practicing free love while stoned and listening to Jimi Hendrix. A lot of that happened. But the adage also serves as a doorway into a broad range of sensibilities, innovations, and conflicts that lay bare cultural contestations—with generational overtones and sociopolitical implications—during Chile’s road to socialism then dictatorship. Sex, drugs, and rock music were part and parcel of a generation’s Zeitgeist, as many young people searched for things ethereal and new at a unique time in modern history.

Abstract This chapter considers Johnson’s writing on family, friendship, and relationship status. Herein Johnson is treated as an independent thinker on each of these subjects, who was guided (but not dominated) by proverbial classical valuations of interpersonal relationships. Ever the empiricist and social observer, Johnson brought his own quirky observations to bear on subjects like romance-based marriage, which was enjoying great cultural currency in the eighteenth century. His treatment of Britons disenfranchised by marital custom and law, such as never-married women and non-maritally born children, evinces deep sympathy and penetrating understanding of the problem of upholding one relationship model at the expense of all others. Himself a passionate friend who divided his time between two non-standard households, Johnson emerges as a forward-looking thinker on the general subject of social relationships and the status or disesteem they incur.

Aim/Purpose: This study intends to find out how the ‘Big Five’ personality factors (openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism) impact on college students’ Facebook use (hedonic, sociability, and compulsive use) and whether GPA has a moderating effect on such use. Background: For college students, their favorite way of Facebook use may turn out to be predetermined by who they are in terms of personality. Methodology: Data was collected from college students in a large southeastern university in the United States. The final sample consisted of 429 responses. PLS-SEM was selected to analyze the sample. Contribution: It will contribute and add new knowledge about the factors towards the outcomes of information technology use. Findings: The analyzed results indicate that two traits, agreeableness and extraversion, have significant relationships with all three types use of the Facebook. Agreeableness and conscientiousness have negative relationships with compulsive use of the Facebook; neuroticism has a negative relationship with their sociability experience in Facebook. In addition, student GPA has a moderating effect on the relationships between agreeableness and sociability experience, as well as conscientiousness and compulsive use of the Facebook. The study suggests that Facebook users need to be aware of our own personality defaults and strengths when approaches the new technologies. Recommendations for Practitioners: The study suggests that for Facebook users, we need to be aware of our own personality defaults and strengths when approaches new technologies. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers may find ways to mitigate defaults and enhance strengths for different personalities. An awareness and solutions around personality and technology use outcomes may make the best use of our personality and bring the best of the new technologies. Impact on Society: An awareness and solutions around personality and technology use outcomes may make the best use of our personality and bring the best of the new technologies. Future Research: Future research should focus on call for such awareness and finding solutions.

In the discussion about density and its role in contemporary city growth, there are few references to support decisions regarding the role that density plays in urban transformations, especially on the scale of proximity. This paper proposes that, in order to contribute to diversity, integration and sociability, it is necessary to resort to a re-conceptualization of density beyond its quantitative condition, tackling it from its qualitative condition that is, as a result of a multidimensional composition of the urban fabric´s spatial properties and in the scale where the relational essence of the city is manifested: the public space. It is analyzed the role of urban morphology and its relation to residential density on the scale of proximity, in the configuration of contemporary forms of urbanity in Greater Santiago.

We have started from a general context in order to get to the PER in the metropolitan area of Oporto - the unhealthy dwelling problem was mostly associated to the ‘ilhas’ (Fig.1) - where we have investigated only the Municipal Promoted houses versus Officially Protected ones for rent. Our main focused case is the open space enhancing the in-between space, concerning the problematic of territory and sociability in the contemporaneous city. In this context, we present the Monte Espinho quarter because it is a particular study case of the investigation: we elaborated the project, in 1994/95 and reformulated it in 2004. The first phase of the enterprise took place in 2005 and the approaching to the reality is going on, putting face to face the "thought space - the space that was idealized" versus the "practiced space - the space being lived ".

The studies about the correlation between transportation and land utilization were one of the fundamental contributions to our knowledge of cities by adding, in the mid-twentieth century, a dynamic vision to the concept of urban structure. Ira Lowry’s model of a metropolis for the city of Pittsburg presented in 1964 became the fundament to the systematic analysis of the urban phenomenon. This conceptual framework was used to observe the impact on the territory of the Metropolitan Buenos Aires (BAM) at a time of major changes in modes of transportation used, residential strategies and centers of mass consumption Even though the urban structure produced by the early robust “metropolization” process still persists in “urbios” and suburban áreas, a new and more dynamic layer of recent “metropolization” with private patterns of urbanization (gated communities) starts in the “periurbio” and grows towards the central core of the metropolis The new territorial behavioral rules showed a change in human sociability from public to private or semi-private spaces. This tendency to confined human interactions limits the urban population’s fundaments of universality, a privileged attribute of the social phenomenon that historically is known as a city
