Summary The earliest Netherlandic lexicographical works were not only strongly influenced by foreign vocabularies and dictionaries, but they also strongly influenced lexicography abroad. Adaptations of the earliest vocabularies, which mainly aimed at the learning of Latin, were produced in various countries, with the vernacular language adapted to the idiom of each country. In German speaking regions originated for instance the Vocabularius Ex quo (ca. 1400), the Liber Vagatorum> (ca. 1509) and the Synonymorum Collectanea (1513) of Hieronymus Cingularius (ca. 1464–1558), and in Italian speaking regions the polyglot Dilucidissimus Dictionarius (1477 Introito e porta), which afterwards in the Netherlands were provided with a Netherlandic text. In the middle of the 16th century Netherlandic lexicography was strongly influenced by the already modern looking, in a humanistic spirit fashioned and very copious dictionaries of the Italian Ambrosius Calepinus (ca. 1440–1510) and the Frenchman Robert Estienne (1503–1559). But it is also true that several Netherlandic lexicographical works were adapted into other languages. There are for instance German adaptations of the Latin-Netherlandic vocabularies Gemmula Vocabulorum (1484), Vocabularius Optimus (1495), Dictionarium Gemmagemmarum (1511) and Curia Palacium (ca. 1477–85), of the topical dictionary of Petrus Apherdianus (ca. 1520–1580) and of the conversation book of Simon Verepaeus (1522–1598), there are German and Czech adaptations of the topical dictionary of Johannes Murmellius (1480–1517) and German and English adaptations of the synonym dictionary of Simon Pelegromius (ca. 1507–1572). In the Netherlands originated polyglot works, such as the Vocabulare (ca. 1530) of Noel de Berlaimont (died 1531), the Nomenclator (1567) of Hadrianus Junius (1511–1575), as well as the Calepinus Pentaglottos (1545), experienced a large international diffusion. This survey suggests that the initial phase of lexicography in Western and Central European languages can only be adequately understood if seen within an international context.

The article considers and analyzes the appearance of modern neologisms in the Italian language, the first references to the fixation of such neologisms, their use in the scientific and linguistic environment (modern lexicology). The structure of recorded new words is studied using the most common prefixes of Latin and Greek origin, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. The analysis of such vocabulary aims to explain their meaning and excludes words such as snobbery, linguistic doublets, slang and vulgarisms. Italian language, as any other language has its mechanisms of word formation and composition related to the enrichment of the vocabulary and the resolution of its lexical problems. It is not easy for Italian language to administer these mechanisms, its structures and microstructures of word formation. It is in a situation which it has to deal with the systems of word formation, which come from Latin, and also that derives from and functions from the nature of Italian. The systems of word-formation, which come from Latin, can be called to be in a “numb” situation, but also in a state that can be used dynamically in Italian language. The phenomenon of word formation stats as a morphological one, but certainly it develops and interferes as a lexical-semantic phenomenon, too. Neologisms in Italian, as in other languages, come from other foreign languages that are called “borrowed words”. Italian language, concerning neologisms, that derive other languages, has a special “attitude”, compared to other European languages. Some European languages have a more refraction attitude in relation to neologisms and their reaction is very interfering and modifying, even alternating. Whereas, concerning Italian, there is a specific reaction, which comes from the phonetic aspect. Surprisingly, phonetics seems to have a very affective role in lexicology and semantics of a language, in our case of Italian, but that does not result like this. The author's personal contribution consists in the study and systematization of modern Italian neologisms, which are recorded in modern basic dictionaries.

"Interlanguage Connections Reflected Lexicographically. A Comparative Study of Romanian, Italian and French. The present article focuses on the concept of etymological word family and the way in which it is reflected in three Romance languages – Romanian, Italian and French – by comparing the historical and cultural journey of one single Latin etymon. I have turned my attention to the Latin verb currere and its family, which have been inherited or borrowed in the three languages under discussion. Analysing the way in which these words are presented in the representative etymological and historical dictionaries (DELR for Romanian, DHLF for French and VLI for Italian), the productivity of the main etymon and its family and, implicitly, the underlying Latin model are discussed. The analysis emphasises both the situation from each individual language, and the inter-linguistic reality, making reference to the cultural contacts existing between the three languages and societies. Starting from an individual case, the main purpose of this study is to show the hereditary and cultural unity of Romanian, Italian and French and the way it has been reflected diachronically via linguistic means. Keywords: etymological word family, borrowing, inherited word, analogy, lexical derivation."

The term “ceramic” is still a problematic topic in the visual arts at the level of concept and terminology, specially at the level of what is related to the primary ceramic materials, its techniques, and its many and varied aesthetics. This requires putting some matters related to its connotations and meaning into perspective. For example, the word “porcelain” in the Arabic language needs some clarification, because of the generalizations it denotes, and what its synonyms mean in terms of similarity, difference, convergence, and contrast in meaning between the various dictionaries of the Arabic language, or between the dictionaries of neighboring languages of Greek and Latin origins. French, Italian, Greek, or even English itself. In view of the disparity in accuracy between Arabic dictionaries in particular, and the developments that have occurred in the concept of the word and its synonyms in them throughout the ages of the language, and the interaction between its systems and adjacent linguistic systems, it has become a necessity for research to monitor the differences in the uses of the word “porcelain” and its synonyms, in order to control Its connotations historically, and scrutinizing its concept linguistically and terminologically. In order to define this term, limit its meaning, and monitor the development that has occurred in the history of the Arabic language, this research relies on the most important Arabic dictionaries. By arranging them chronologically, he seeks to highlight similarities and differences historically, and the surrounding considerations that go back to the reality of employing the concept of “ceramics” and its fields and developments. To link the word to its era, this research refers to the dictionary and the history of its adoption in the language. The research seeks to monitor the diachronic contents of these dictionaries in order to clarify the similarities, differences, differences, and developments dictionary by dictionary, and chronologically according to chronological order.

Lexical level of a language is represented by authentic words and a number of loanwords from other languages. The present article focuses upon the Arabisms and the history of their appearance in the Russian language. The material for the study were etymological dictionaries. The result of the analysis enabled to compile a list of the indirect Arabisms consisting of 41 units for which it was possible to trace the stages of their introduction into Russian; these units were further sorted into subject groups. It was found that that introduction had occurred via Turkish, Latin, French, English, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish reflecting economic, political and cultural interaction of Russia with those countries. The sources of a number of Arabisms are still arguable and need further research.

On the Earliest Italian Bilingual Lexicography, Known and Unknown Since the Latin language became part of the education system, all kinds of grammatical compendiums, dictionaries, and commentaries on classical works of Greco-Roman literature have been an indispensable tool for exploring its intricacies. The turn of the 14th and 15th centuries was extremely interesting in this respect as it abounded in diverse and original works of this type, especially in Italy. The issues of studiorum humanitatis are discussed in such works as Elegantiae Linguae Latinae by Lorenzo Valle, Regulae grammaticales by Guarino Guarini, Epitoma seu Regulae constructionis and Latini sermonis emporium by Antonio Mancinelli, or the less known bilingual Glossarium by Jacopo Ursello from Roccantica. The books testify to teachers’ intentions to respond to the specific educational needs existing at that time, when it was necessary to educate students in written, spoken, and—to an increasing extent—Vulgar Latin. This article analyzes the above-mentioned Latin textbooks by Antonio Mancinelli and Jacopo Ursello, in which various aspects of Italianization operate in the light of the most important lexicographic sources of the era.

This article represents the conclusion of a wide-ranging European project concerning the lexical structure of emotion in the neo-Latin languages: Italian, French, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese and Romanian. Intended to bring to light common features in these languages, as well as any peculiarities, the research project selected representative samples of emotional terms from the dictionaries of the six languages studied and analysed the similarity between these words using Scaling procedures. The graphic outputs of the Scaling procedures appear to organize the neo-Latin emotion lexicons in respect of three major dimensions that are similar to those already found in other languages: `hedonic value', `potency' and `physiological activation'. Interesting peculiarities emerged in relation to the salience of the dimensions, mainly for Romanian and Portuguese.

Although the advantages of multilingualism are important, recent studies have shown that those who interact with several idioms on a daily basis may perceive insecurities in practising the languages they know. The daily confrontation of different idioms may even compromise the correct use of one’s own idiom, considering the many linguistic interferences. The article illustrates examples of this phenomenon by examining the editing of some entries in the latest bilingual dictionaries of the Istitut Ladin Micurá de Rü. The focus is on the comparison of different language systems – Ladin, Italian and German. Comparing the different idioms contributes to the development of greater metalinguistic capacity and a deeper analysis of one’s own language.

This contribution discusses a dictionary analysis of Germanisms in Lo slang di Bolzano by Paolo Cagnan 2011, the first study of German lexemes in the informal registers of this variety. The aim is to determine the degree of integration into the Italian language and to compare the Germanisms with those in other specialised dictionaries. A comparison with the semantic correspondences of previous research contributions is also made. It shows that results show that the vast majority of the lexemes studied have a low degree of integration into Italian and can hardly be found in other dictionaries of neighbouring dialects or languages. This suggests that they occur exclusively in the lower registers of Bolzano Italian and indicates that the Germanisms in Lo slang di Bolzano may be highly volatile. Most of them are nouns and interjections, and only a few of them are verbs. Interestingly these verbs are mostly loan translations of particle verbs with aus- as the first element, such as ridere fuori or fare fuori; a tendency that is also evident in the Ladin rì ora and se fé ora. Compared to previous studies, mostly based on newspaper corpora, there are also considerable semantic differences because most borrowings in slang refer to the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, such as bere ad ex or monoschluck. Cagnan’s dictionary thus represents an enormous enrichment for research into the vocabulary of Bolzano and Italian in South Tyrol in general.

e period of the establishment of fruitful trade relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, from the 15th to the 18th century, is actually the period when many envoys and travel writers wrote in their reports about the Balkans, including the south of Serbia, which was under foreign rule at that time. Speaking about the sources important for the study of Leskovac and its surroundings, we can say that they represent a fertile and very diverse material and we can categorize them into travel reports, travel diaries, chronicles, epistles, dictionaries and lists. Their charm is all the greater because they are written in different European languages. The largest number of sources are in the Latin language, while a certain number of sources were written and published in other Romance languages, such as French, Spanish, Portuguese, as well as in varieties of the Old Italian language. This fact sheds light on some new research that goes beyond previous conclusions based only on the analysis of Ottoman and Cyrillic sources and opens the door to some new research based on the study f sources on Roman sources that are important testimonies and an important part of the cultural heritage of the South of Serbia

This work is intended to collaborate with the study of lexicography in Brazil as well as to address the subject yet little studied in literature metalexicography: phonic information in dictionaries. Although the main function of dictionaries is to relate a series of words from one language and also to offer its meaning it is known that the querents expect a lot more of this kind of publication. Besides the meaning, users wish to find in dictionaries as much grammatical clarification as possible. Since the pronunciation is among the information contained in the dictionaries, this work aims to analyze these indications in monolingual dictionaries of the Italian and Portuguese languages and in bilingual Italian / Portuguese dictionaries. The research primarily aims to answer, with the methodology applied, the following questions: 1) Which notation system is used to annotate the pronunciation of the entries? 2) How is phonic information described in the dictionary pronunciation guide? 3) Do the dictionaries describe the variations of pronunciation in the languages studied? The instructions on how to pronounce the words provide autonomy so the learners can produce words orally. By the conduced analysis it was possible to verify if the studied dictionaries can provide the querent with the information for pronunciation searched in a clear and satisfactory way. Finally, the proposed improvements in the systems adopted by the dictionaries in terms of pronunciation aims to make the dictionary a more useful tool in teaching-learning oral production of the Italian and Portuguese languages.

Annotation:
This dissertation investigates the use of the subjunctive in completive clauses governed by verbs in Italian, both synchronically and diachronically, and in Vulgar Latin. By making use of the tools provided by the Variationist Sociolinguistic framework (Labov 1972, 1994), the current study sheds light on the underlying conditioning on variability using actual usage and speech-surrogate data. Contemporary actual speech data comes from LIP (De Mauro et al. 1993) and C-ORAL-ROM (Cresti & Moneglia 2005) corpora, providing spontaneous discourse in casual and careful speech as well as sub-sample divisions representative of geographical variation. In order to measure any changes in the underlying conditioning on subjunctive selection, a diachronic benchmark is established: a corpus of speech-like surrogates of 16th to 20th century Italian, COHI (Corpus of Historical Italian), and a corpus of Vulgar Latin (Cena Trimalchionis, from the Satyricon by Petronius). The subjunctives were extracted in adherence to the principle of accountability (Labov 1972), using the method developed by Poplack (1992): every complement clause governed by a matrix verb (governor) that triggered the subjunctive at least once was included. This method enables us to circumvent the issue of the lack of consensus in the literature on exactly which contexts, i.e. verbs and/or meanings, should trigger the subjunctive in discourse. This issue surfaces as well from the meta-linguistic analysis of a compendium of 58 Italian grammars and treaties (CSGI, Collezione Storica di Grammatiche Italiane), constructed for the purpose of this research. A series of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors proposed by formal and prescriptive literature are operationalized and tested against the corpora of both Italian and Vulgar Latin, in order to ascertain the nature of variability in discourse: i.e. whether the use of the subjunctive is semantically motivated, productive in speech or undergoing desemanticization and lexicalization. Despite widespread assumption of a change that occurred after the political and the subsequent linguistic unification of Italy, i.e. that the subjunctive has lost ground in favour of the indicative when it was supposedly used categorically in the past, quantitative and statistical evidence shows that subjunctive selection is largely determined by lexical identity of the governor as well as embedded suppletive forms of essere, and that this pattern has been operative at least since the 16th century. On a more socio-linguistic aspect, this study confirms the linguistic prestige that the subjunctive has acquired in contemporary speech, being selected with a wider range of infrequent and singleton governors by highly educated speakers. Also, the highly lexicalized pattern on variability was found to be largely shared amongst the four main urban centres of Florence, Milan, Rome, and Naples, thus countering the assumption of divergent linguistic behaviour between northern and southern varieties of Italian. The study also shows that despite the significant time span targeted, no evidence of desemanticization has been found. Likewise, the variationist analysis on the Vulgar Latin subjunctive shows that subjunctive choice was already largely determined by, and restricted, to a few governors, identified as ‘volitive’ and ‘emotive’ matrices. These governors remained strong predictors for the selection of the subjunctive in Italian as well, suggesting that this lexical pattern has been transferred and consistently retained in the daughter language.

Annotation:
This thesis offers an approach to the history of mythographical discourse through the figure of Theseus and his appearances in texts from England, Italy and France. Analysing a range of poetic, historical, and allegorical works that feature Theseus alongside their classical and contemporary intertexts, it is a study of the conceptions of Greco-Roman mythology prevalent in European literature from 1300-1600. Focusing on mythology’s pervasive presence as a background to medieval and early modern literary and intellectual culture, it draws attention to the fragmentary, fluid and polymorphous nature of mythology in relation to its use for different purposes in a wide range of texts. The first impact of this study is to draw attention to the distinction between mythology and mythography, as a means of focusing on the full range of interpretative processes associated with the ancient myths in their textual forms. Returning attention to the processes by which writers and readers came to know the Greco-Roman myths, it widens the commonly accepted critical definition of ‘mythography’ to include any writing of or on mythology, while restricting ‘mythology’ to its abstract sense, meaning a traditional collection of tales that exceeds any one text. This distinction allows the analyses of the study’s primary texts to display the full range of interpretative processes and possibilities involved in rewriting mythology, and to outline a spectrum of linked but distinctive mythographical genres that define those possibilities. Breaking down into two parts of three chapters each, the thesis examines Theseus’ appearances across these mythographical genres, first in the period from 1300 to the birth of print, and then from the birth of print up to 1600. Taking as its primary texts works by Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, John Lydgate and William Shakespeare along with their classical intertexts, it situates each of them in regard to their multiple defining contexts. Paying close attention to the European traditions of commentary, translation and response to classical sources, it shows mythographical discourse as a vibrant aspect of medieval and early modern literary culture, equally embedded in classical traditions and contemporary traditions that transcended national and linguistic boundaries.

The article analyzes the importance of the development of lexical competence within the various glottodidactic methods. In particular, it is highlighted how, at present, teaching vocabulary has definitively freed itself from a subordinate, almost accessory, position with respect to grammar teaching. The article then focuses on the role of the dictionary in learning vocabulary and on the necessary skills for its use. It is highlighted the lack, in Italian L2, of pedagogical dictionaries, i.e. simplified monolingual dictionaries specifically designed for a non-Italian speaking public. The article ends with the description of the most important corpora of Italian language, which could became useful operational tools in teaching vocabulary.

This work is a diary recounting the journey to Italy of the author at the beginning of the twentieth century; nowadays it is considered a classic text that provides a testimony on the way Italian art was perceived in Russia. Though it is well-known in Russia, this work has only recently received some attention in Italy following its recent translation. This chapter contains detailed and original analyses that compare Muratov’s translations with those found in Russian dictionaries written in the same period. These concern a selection of lemmas in art and architecture and the names of artists. This chapter shows that the language employed in this work cannot be defined as either specialised or standard, but as a mixture between the two.

This chapter investigates R. John Andree’s A vocabulary, in six languages (London, 1725). This work was not conceived solely as a reference tool but with a pedagogical purpose as well; it was based on a comparative method to ease English native speakers’ acquisition of vocabulary in four living Romance languages (Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese) by showing their etymological similarity to their Latin ancestor – the fifth language in the Vocabulary – and between them, with English as the language of the entry words. Indeed, by viewing and memorizing Latin and Romance words together, the learner was expected to acquire them more easily. This chapter focuses on the dictionary, its method and the author’s language learning ideas and concludes with considerations relating to its contribution to innovation in language learning and teaching.

ZusammenfassungSalomon Negri (1665–1727) was one among many Arab Christians who played vital roles in the fields of diplomacy, missionary work, and Oriental studies in Early Modern Europe. Born in Damascus, he moved to Paris at the age of eighteen and later travelled to Halle, Venice, Constantinople, Rome, and London, working as a language teacher, translator, informant, librarian, and copyist. By examining Negri’s short autobiography, letters, and other ego-documents written in Latin, French, Italian, and Arabic, this paper explores how he adapted his self-representation to different audiences in Protestant and Catholic Europe. I argue that Negri’s flexible self-fashioning, which allowed him to navigate between various professional and denominational contexts, can be interpreted as the survival strategy of a peripatetic Arab Christian scholar who was never recognized as an equal member of the European ‘Republic of Letters’.

Chapter 5 gives an account of the polyglot, or multilingual, dictionaries of the sixteenth century which included English. In all of these, English-language equivalents were added to existing dictionaries in continental European traditions. They might have subject-ordered macrostructure, like the Sex linguarum dictionarius of 1537, or alphabetical macrostructure, like the Colloques ou dialogues avec un dictionaire en six langues of 1576; they might include dialogues or phrasebook material. Their headwords might be Latin, and one of them, the Nomenclator of Hadrianus Junius, included some interesting post-classical Latin. A polyglot tradition based on the Dictionarium of Calepino matched English words with equivalents in ten other ancient and modern languages.

The purpose of the article is to show the process of formatting a new kind of linguistics, a contribution by A. Schlözer and I. S. Vater of their version of modern linguistics based on the Samoyed (Nenets) language research. The article demonstrates the way the researchers have arrived at their conclusions through careful selection of sources, both published and archived. The 18th century, the “age of systematics”, complete with a new division of sciences, arrived at the transformation of ethnography and linguistics into independent disciplines. Those were prerequisites for the emergence of comparative- historical linguistics. Using the Samoyed language studies as an example, the article examines Schlözer and Vater’s solution of the problems arising in identifying linguistic kinship: the lack of grammatical descriptions and the difficulties of reliable fixation of a non-written language. The works by Vater are the most significant precursors for the first grammar of the Samoyed language, i. e. The Samoyed Grammar by M. Castrén (1854). Schlözer insisted that the Samoyeds were an independent people, and that the section of his Northern History devoted to their community was a traditional comprehensive description of history, geography, customs, and language. The author determines the place of the Samoyed language among the neighboring peoples, critically analyzing the sources while offering a thematic Latin-Samoyed dictionary. Schlözer’s materials were later referred to in the Comparative Dictionaries… by P. S. Pallas. I. S. Vater, realizing the need for a new classification of sciences, headed the department of ethnography and linguistics, thus re-defining the object of linguistics. Regularly addressing the Samoyed language, as well as publishing texts, dictionaries and grammar notes in it, both addressing his informants and actively cooperating with the international academic community, Vater placed the Samoyed language into a rich academic context. The activities of the conscientious and impartial authors in their particular academic field demonstrates a long process of introducing their new information into circulation, together with changes of visual description: from a mixed description (by Schlözer) to the distinction between ethnography and linguistics (Vater).
