Annotation:
Introduction: Corrosive esophagitis is often caused by the intake of alkaline or acidic substances. Esophageal stenosis is the most important late complication of corrosive esophagitis. In Laos, where Western medical care is available in few locations, treatment for esophageal stenosis is challenging. We report on a patient who was treated in Laos. Case Presentation: In Laos, an 18-year-old woman attempted to commit suicide by drinking an acidic detergent. Sixteen months later, she consulted a district hospital in Laos, which is supported by a Japanese nonprofit organization, with a chief complaint of dysphagia. An upper gastrointestinal series demonstrated severe stenosis of her thoracic esophagus. She underwent open laparotomy for gastrostomy with a urinary catheter to improve her nutritionally poor condition; the operation was performed by a Japanese surgeon with Lao medical staff. Through the gastrostomy, she injected liquid food by herself. Gradually she became unable even to drink water. Because we could not obtain any devices for esophageal dilatation in Laos, balloon dilatation catheters were donated from Japan. Twenty-three months after the injury, the endoscopic balloon dilatation for esophageal stenosis was performed by a Japanese physician, who also taught local physicians how to use the device. The patient's esophagus was as narrow as a pinhole at 20 cm from the incisors. Repeated balloon dilatation by local physicians enabled her to consume solid food orally. Conclusion: Corrosive esophagitis combined with stenosis is often difficult to treat. The Lao patient was successfully treated by a combination of local and foreign medical staff.

Despite an acrimonious history, being involved in the second and third Indochina War, in the past few years, Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) seems to have deepened its relations with China. The improvement of friendly bilateral ties between Beijing and Vientiane can be observed by the evidence of China as the largest foreign investor in the country. On one hand, Lao PDR’s struggle to improve its economic its landlocked geography and the need for infrastructure assistance naturally makes the country lean more towards China. On the other hand, Beijing needs Lao PDR’s geographical advantages to complete the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project. The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolving relationship between China and Lao PDR within the context of the BRI. This paper concludes that both parties have developed a complex interdependent relationship with China attempting to establish a solid geo-economics system while trying to assert its position in a structural power system. The act of assertion is supported by its foreign policy that is predicted to be utilized to cajole Southeast Asia countries to be part of a community of common destiny under the leadership of Beijing.

Cricket farming can have a positive impact on rural development and rural economy in low- and middle-income countries. Moreover, crickets have the potential to address food and nutrition insecurity and promote food sovereignty through the promotion of local production and consumption. This paper presents and discusses five complementary studies conducted in Thailand, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Kenya. Cricket farming is being promoted in these countries under research projects, public-private partnerships, NGOs and international organisations. In the majority of the countries, cricket farming is still in its infancy and research into how to improve cricket farming systems is still on-going. Cricket farming in Cambodia, Lao PDR, DRC and Kenya remains relatively limited, and many farmers are still a part of pilot projects. In each of the five regions, different cricket species have been a part of traditional diets. As discussed in this paper, many of the potential benefits of the production and consumption of crickets have not yet been realised in many cases due to: (1) lack of adequate support and awareness from stakeholders (especially government agencies); (2) unknown trade volumes; (3) high costs of inputs; and (4) cultural taboos. The information presented in this paper will be especially useful to stakeholders from governmental institutions, non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations and research institutions.

The Lao People's Democratic Republic celebrated its 30th birthday in 2005. The government is stable, although dissent is still repressed, and minorities express persistent concerns about their treatment. The economy shows consistent growth amid a policy of relaxation, and investors are looking at Laos with greater interest. Trade links with the U.S. have also improved. Poverty remains a serious issue but is slowly declining.

PURPOSE Tobacco use represents a major public health problem in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), however very few tobacco cessation programs are available. This formative, qualitative study of Lao healthcare professionals (HCP) aims to elicit both factors that help smokers quit and mechanisms to improve the effectiveness of tobacco treatment programs. METHODS We conducted in-depth interviews with 28 HCPs at two hospitals, Setthathirath Hospital in Vientaine Capital and Champasak Hospital in Champasak Province. We used purposive sampling to select a diverse sample with regard to age, sex, work position, and clinical speciality. Interviews were voice recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis aided by the MAXQDA program. Codes and themes related to smoking cessation behavior were based on theoretical constructs of the Phase-Based Model (PBM). Codes and themes related to intervention implementation or dissemination were based on the Practical, Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM). RESULTS Regarding PBM-based factors to help smokers quit, HCPs emphasized the need for medications to address craving, repeating quit-smoking advice, arranging follow-ups to monitor patients' progress, and advising patients on exercising or other distracting activities to cope with urges and stress. HCPs also identified visual education tools (e.g., short videos or images) as helpful, and that emphasis of smoking-related harms to patients' families increased smoker's motivation to quit. Salient PRISM-based factors for program implementation include the continuing dissemination of information regarding smoking-related harms in mass media, highlighting successful quit stories, the need for HCPs to be a model of becoming non-smokers, and the local enforcement of tobacco control policies (e.g., smoke-free environments). CONCLUSION This study identified several areas for improvement to increase the likelihood of success for tobacco treatment programs in Lao PDR, including individual-level (smokers') factors, provider-level factors, and external environment factors.
