Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between board characteristics and firm financial diversification (geographic sales) among listed firms on Nairobi securities exchange, Kenya: static panel approach.Methodology: Fisher and Levin-Lin-Chu tests were used to test the presence of unit root in the series under study. Hadri residual-based Lagrange multiplier test was used to determine the feasible model.Results: Results revealed existence of positive and significant relationship between interlock directorship and geographic diversification as positive and significant directors’ remuneration had a negative and significant effect on firm’s geographic sales, while operational risk negatively varied with geographic sales Agency Theory, free cash flow hypothesis Resource Based view theory provided theoretical framework. Directors’ remuneration negatively impacted geographic sales but did not explain diversification in relation to national sales. This study affirmed the managerial heuristics as determinant of firm financial diversification providing support to the convectional financial dimensions of firm performance particularly ROE, ROI and EPS.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The Government of Kenya and Capital Market regulator should enact and implement legislations that guides on interlock directorship, directors remuneration diversity and tolerable operational risks as determinants of diversification

This study aims to investigate the effect of leverage, firm size, earnings growth, and earning persistence on earnings response coefficient. The population used in this study are all manufacturing companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2015 until 2019 and had positive earnings before tax. Consequently, the samples in this research are 68 manufacturing companies so that the observations are 340. For examining data, this research uses a panel data regression model. After running the chow test and Lagrange multiplier test, the most suitable method for the regression model is the common effect model. This research shows that leverage and firm size do not influence earning response coefficient. Meanwhile, earnings growth and earnings persistence have a positive effect on the earnings response coefficient. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical insights on the impact of board and audit committee characteristics on the financial performance of United Arab Emirates (UAE) listed firms.Design/methodology/approach – A multiple regression panel model was employed for the period 2006 to 2015. The analysis incorporates Anderson Lagrange Multiplier test and Hausman test to determine if a fixed effects or random effects model should be employed.Findings – Our results demonstrated that board size and board meetings had a significant positive relationship with financial performance while there were also significant positive relationships between both audit committee composition and audit committee members’ education and firm financial performance.Research limitations/implications – The findings inform UAE firms about the benefits of employing directors with a more diverse skill set to enhance board effectiveness as well as having audit committee members hold a recognised qualification in finance or accounting to improve firm financial performance.Originality/value – Our study contributes to the CG literature by adding to the limited studies on CG in the UAE which help reduce the significant gap between foundation theories and practical applicability.

This study investigates the intriguing relationship between a robust macroeconomic environment during economic recovery and the signaling of increased firm value within the banking sector. It underscores the importance of macroeconomic factors in investors' evaluation of banking firms and examines the rationale behind investors not exhibiting strong reactions to favorable macroeconomic signals. Utilizing an explanatory research method, the study analyzes secondary data from financial reports of 42 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2010-2020. A panel data regression approach is employed, incorporating common effect, fixed effect, and random effect models, validated through Chow, Hausman, and Lagrange Multiplier (LM) tests. Resulting insights explain the paradoxical absence of a robust investor response despite banks' resilience amid the economic turmoil. The theoretical implication is that a stable macroeconomic environment typically projects positive signals for the banking sector, enhancing investor confidence and potentially driving up share prices. The study reveals substantial practical implications concerning the macroeconomic influences on firm value signals in the banking industry during economic recovery. Banks are advised to recalibrate their strategies and operations to capitalize on or navigate the risks associated with recovery periods.

Greater pricing presume on audit service has been put by the regulations of the auditing and accounting practices for the disclosure of audit fees, since audit fee is directly related to audit quality. However, the audit fees perceived by the client is often different from the amount charged by the auditors. Hence, this study investigated the impact of firm-specific characteristics on audit fees of quoted consumer goods firms in Nigeria using a purposive sampling technique. Secondary data were obtained from annual reports of the companies for the period from 2009-2016. The empirical result from Breusch-Pagan Lagrange Multiplier Test (BP-LM) produced a chi-square value of 13.94 with p-value of 0.0001 indicating that pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) will not be appropriate for the study. The Hausman test showed a chi-square of 23.55 with a p-value of 0.001 indicating that the null hypothesis is strongly rejected. Thus, the only estimate from the fixed effect model was interpreted to explain the relationship between firm-specific characteristics and audit fees of quoted consumer goods firms in Nigeria. The result revealed that auditee size, auditee risk, auditee profitability and IFRS adoption are the firm specific characteristics that impact on audit fees with only auditee size and IFRS adoption being positively related to audit fees while the other factors are negatively related to audit fees. Based on this finding, this study concluded that the firm’s specific factors are the major drivers of audit fees in Nigeria consumer goods firms. This study recommends among others that companies should implement corporate governance principles that address issues relating to board independence and committee sizes to guide activities in the consumer goods sector since profitability behave negatively with audit fees.

This paper focused on strategic corporate financial decisions regarding investments to increase firm value moderated by profitability in emerging markets. The analytical method used was panel data analysis, with a total number of observations of 260 energy sector companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2019-2021. The results of the Chow Test, Hausman Test, and Lagrange Multiplier Test show the selected random effect model. The model shows that there is an effect of investment decisions on firm value in a positive direction and the moderating role of profitability strengthens this effect. The results of the robustness check show that the research model is still consistent with previous findings. Investment decisions have an effect on firm value, and profitability moderates this effect, both in the assumption of changes in control variables or model estimation using quantile regression. Our findings are in line with the idea of ​​signaling theory that information on the company’s investment decisions is a positive signal that the company has good growth opportunities or prospects so that it will increase the firm value and ultimately have an impact on the prosperity of shareholders. Furthermore, profitability strengthens the positive signal of the company’s reputation in the eyes of investors.

Researchers analyze financial ratio data using a quantitative approach to determine the effect on the company's stock return. Researchers formulated four research hypotheses. The data will be modeled using the Panel Data Regression method with the help of E-Views 12 Student software. With purposive sampling techniques, researchers will use stock closing price data and financial statements from 9 Properties and Real Estate companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (period 2018 to 2022). With the chow test and lagrange multiplier test, researchers will model the data using a common effect model. The results showed that the ROA of der, CR, and FS, either simultaneously or partially, did not have a significant effect on stock returns. Based on signal theory, capital owners will receive bad signals from the company because the variables ROA, DER, CR, FS are considered unable to influence the company's stock return.

Since the first studies dedicated to the mechanics of deformable bodies (by Euler, D’Alembert, Lagrange) the principle of virtual work (or virtual velocities) has been used to provide firm guidance to the formulation of novel theories. Gabrio Piola dedicated his scientific life to formulating a continuum theory in order to encompass a large class of deformation phenomena and was the first author to consider continua with non-local internal interactions and, as a particular case, higher-gradient continua. More recent followers of Piola (Mindlin, Sedov and then Richard Toupin) recognized the principle of virtual work (and its particular case, the principle of least action) as the (only!) firm foundation of continuum mechanics. Mindlin and Toupin managed to formulate a conceptual frame for continuum mechanics which is able to effectively model the complex behaviour of so-called architectured, advanced, multiscale or microstructured (meta)materials. Other postulation schemes, in contrast, do not seem able to be equally efficient. The present work aims to provide a historical and theoretical overview of the subject. Some research perspectives concerning this theoretical approach are outlined in the final section.

This study aims to empirically examine the effect of Islamic Social Reporting on the Growth of Islamic Banking, namely Islamic Commercial Banks for the 2017-2021 period. This study uses a quantitative approach. The type of variable data is secondary data, namely data obtained from the annual financial report published on the official website of each bank for the period 2017-2021. The analytical method used is the panel data regression method. The data analysis techniques used in this study include Descriptive Statistical Analysis, Model Selection (FEM, CEM REM, Chow Test, Hausman Test, and Lagrange Multiplier Test). Classical Assumption Test consists of the Normality Test, Multicollinearity Test, Autocorrelation Test, and Heteroscedasticity Test, Test The hypothesis consists of the T-Test, F Test, Coefficient of Determination, and Multiple Linear Regression Test with the help of the Eviews 10.0 application. The results of this study indicate that partially (t-test) the firm size variable has a significant positive effect on Islamic Social Reporting. Partially, the profitability variable has a significant positive effect on Islamic Social Reporting. Partially, leverage has a significant positive effect on Islamic Social Reporting. Simultaneously (F test) the variables of firm size, profitability, and leverage have a significant effect on the disclosure of Islamic Social Reporting.

Práce komplexně popisuje vodní a vodovzdušné chlazení pomocí metod CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) konkrétně s využitím software ANSYS FLUENT. Skládá se ze dvou hlavních částí, z nichž první se zabývá numerickým popisem jediné vodní kapky a druhá popisem směsí kapek představující paprsek válcové a ploché trysky. Je založena převážně na vícefázových modelech proudění a vlastních uživatelsky definovaných funkcí (User Defined Functions, UDF) představujících stěžejní část práce. Uvedené výpočtové modely jsou ve většině případů verifikovány pomocí experimentálních dat nebo jiných numerických modelů. V první části práce jsou teoreticky postupně rozebrány všechny tři použité vícefázové modely proudění. První z nich, Volume Of Fluid model (VOF), byl použit pro modelování jediné kapky (mikromodel). Zatímco zbývající dva, Euler-Euler model a Euler-Lagrange model, byly aplikovány v modelu celého paprsku trysky (makromodel). Mikromodel popisuje dynamiku volného pádu vodní kapky. Pro malé průměry kapek (~100µm) standardní model povrchového napětí (Continuum Surface Force, CSF) způsoboval tzv. parazitní proudy. Z toho důvodu je v práci rozebrána problematika výpočtu normál, křivostí volných povrchů a povrchového napětí jako zdroje objemových sil v pohybových rovnicích. Makromodel se zabývá studiem dynamiky celého paprsku tj. oblastí od ústí trysky po dopad na horký povrch, bere v úvahu kompletní geometrii, tzn. např. podpůrné válečky, bramu, spodní část krystalizátoru apod. V práci je rozebrána 2D simulace dopadu paprsku válcové trysky pomocí VOF modelu Euler-Lagrange modelu na horký povrch. Pro případ s VOF modelem byl navržen model blánového varu. Euler-Euler model a Euler-Lagrange model byly využity pro simulaci paprsku ploché trysky horizontálně ostřikující horkou bramu přímo pod krystalizátorem nad první řadou válečků. Pro Euler-Euler model byl navržen model sekundárního rozpadu paprsku založený na teorii nejstabilnější vlnové délky (Blob jet model). Jelikož diskrétní Lagrangeovy částice tvořily v určitých místech spíše kontinuální fázi, byl navržen a otestován model pro konverzi těchto částic do VOF.

The conversion between different periodic sampling structures is an important problem, especially for the conversion between quincunx and rectangular structures in television image processing and HDTV applications. To avoid aliasing error and remove redundant images, appropriate decimation filters and interpolation filters must be used. The one-dimensional Lagrange multiplier approach is extended for the design of two-dimensional FIR digital filters with magnitude or derivative constraints. The method is based on minimizing the integrated square error for the frequency response over the passband and stopband while imposing magnitude or derivative constraints. The technique is used to design the infinite precision interpolation and decimation filters for the sampling structure conversion first. For designing discrete coefficient FIR digital filters, the iterative Lagrange multiplier approach is proposed. The new method associates the conventional Lagrange multiplier approach and a hybrid tree search algorithm. The closed-form solutions for the elements of all matrices are obtained, and numerical design examples are presented to demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of the approach.

A two-staged swirling burner is numerically simulated using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). This combustor uses two types of injection: a multipoint system that consists in 10 holes in a crossflow configuration, and a pilot system that uses a pressure-swirl atomizer. The relation between the rate of fuel injected from each injection system was found to be related with flame shape transition and hysteresis phenomena[4]. Also, the pilot spray was found to have a major role on these transitons, so it is of paramount importance to correctly reproduce its behavior on the numerical modeling, if one is interested in simulating these flame bifurcations. To describe the spray, a point-droplet approximation is used in a Lagrangian framework with the FIM-UR model [1], that has already proven its accuracy for several configurations. However, in this application it fails to reproduce the droplet size distribution, especially in the Central Recirculation Zone (CRZ), as it uses an arbitrary expression to impose the spray opening limits (which are not input parameters). In the present work, the input parameters of the FIM-UR model are modified to enable the recovery of the right droplet size distribution and improve the description of the liquid velocity field, resulting in a better numerical representation of the experimental results, essential for further studies.

In the last years the leading manufacturers enhanced the performance of heavy-duty gas turbines rapidly. With the increasing amount of cooling air passing the internal air system, a rising amount of air borne particles are transported to the film cooling holes at the turbine blade surface. Due to the size, these holes are critical for blockage. Experience with gas turbines during operation showed a complex interaction of cooling air under different flow conditions and its particle load. In this paper the results of a new Lagrange-Tracking simulation algorithm based on 3D-Navier-Stokes flow solution are shown for the first time. Compared to previously shown simulations the algorithm is enhanced by models, taking additional, relevant physical effects into account. The new simulation results are compared to experimental results and former simulations.

Este trabalho apresenta uma análise sobre estabilidade de tensão em sistemas elétricos de potência, considerando distorções harmônicas através da modelagem de um problema de otimização. Seu objetivo é determinar o máximo carregamento do sistema, levando em consideração restrições relativas a limites de magnitude de tensão, distorções harmônicas individuais e totais. O problema formulado é resolvido via método de pontos interiores e é capaz de fornecer os multiplicadores de Lagrange associados às restrições ativas do mesmo. A partir do conhecimento desses valores, novos índices são propostos neste trabalho para se averiguar a estabilidade de tensão e o impacto das distorções harmônicas de tensão na operação dos sistemas elétricos, sendo possível determinar barras críticas relativas a esses problemas. Testes são conduzidos usando o sistema IEEE 14 barras, a fim de validar a metodologia proposta.

Abstract This paper presents a simple measurement technique for measuring the translational and rotational velocities of flexible continuous structures. The technique uses segments of strain-sensitive materials as transducers. The proposed sensor measures velocity with very little loading compared to conventional means such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDT’s). This technique can be much less costly more practical than other translational velocity measurement. In one realization, segments of piezoelectric film convert strains on the surface of a beam into electrical outputs. These outputs are connected to signal conditioners with very low impedance. The resulting spatially-discrete signals are then interpolated with a weighting vector that incorporates Lagrange polynomials, specified boundary conditions, and the desired location(s) of measurement. The whole signal processing can be done with a simple analog circuit. Numerical simulations show that the circuit can be used to estimate translational and rotational velocities very accurately.

Este artigo expõe a implementação em hardware de um método de reamostragem dinâmica em tempo real, o qual contém uma etapa para estimação de frequência, um algoritmo para obtenção da forma de onda via interpolação de Lagrange aplicada à estrutura Farrow, e um algoritmo para realizar a Transformada Discreta de Fourier -- (DFT). O primeiro parâmetro estimado pelo algoritmo a partir da obtenção de amostras consecutivas é a frequência, cujo resultado é utilizado para alimentar o algoritmo subsequente, que se trata da interpolação do sinal. Por fim, a transformada discreta de Fourier de janela deslizante (SWDFT) é aplicada ao sinal interpolado com ajuste do número de amostras por ciclo de forma coerente. Além disso, o artigo exibe os resultados obtidos na implementação do método em um microcontrolador, no qual o algoritmo foi submetido a um sinal permeado com composição harmônica e variação de frequência.

A cable box is a metal enclosure that provides connections to the main electric power machineries such as switchgear or transformer. Cable terminals housed in cable boxes have a high fire risk because very few cable boxes can withstand the pressure generated by a low impedance arc. And the cable boxes usually suffer from significant damage causing breakage of bushings between the cable box and the electric equipment. In case of transformer, oil is then spilled from the damaged bushing and the released oil generates the fire ignition. In this study numerical prediction for the pressure rise and propagation during the arc inside the cable box has been performed considering the effects of the shock waves, the deformation of the tank and the fluid-structure interactions between the pressure wave and the cable box. Based on the Euler-Lagrange coupling method, flow field and structure analysis has been conducted to predict pressure rise value of the cable box and the stresses of the wall. Two arcing positions such as line to line and line to ground has been chosen in order to consider how the initial arc point affects the pressure wave propagation and the shapes of pressure wave pattern due to the interaction with near wall.

At the “Institut für Thermische Strömungsmaschinen” (ITS) a numerical method based on the the meshfree “Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics” (SPH) approach has been developed with the objective of computing primary breakup in the vicinity of fuel spray nozzles [1, 2]. In recent publications the successful application of the code to different flow problems is demonstrated [3, 4]. In this paper we present the first application of the method to investigate a simplified, but applied fuel spray nozzle geometry of the swirl cup design in 2D. The atomization process of Jet-A1 at ambient and at high pressure conditions is compared in terms of film flow development, mixing and spray characteristics. The influence of pressure is pointed out and quantified. The study demonstrates that the SPH method is a suitable toolbox for the analysis and the design of fuel spray nozzles. Unique analysis tools that are not available in grid-based CFD methods are presented and applied. Droplet distributions are extracted, which can be considered as possible input in subsequent Euler-Lagrange computations.

Abstract Two methods for performing transient inertia analysis of vehicle mechanism systems are presented in this paper. The analysis techniques are used to predict the response of automotive mechanisms to the accelerations associated with vehicle impacts. General analytical methods for evaluating rotational system dynamics are presented. The utility of the techniques are demonstrated by evaluation of a vehicle outside door handle. The methods, along with time dependent accelerations associated with vehicle impact, are used in a specific example to perform a dynamic analysis of an automobile outside door handle. The first method utilizes generalized Lagrange equations for a non-conservative system to formulate a second order nonlinear differential equation that defines the response of the handle components to the transient input. The differential equation is solved numerically by employing a fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The second method uses commercially available two dimensional rigid body dynamics software to evaluate the events. The results predicted using the analytical techniques are compared to experimental data generated by high speed film analysis of latch tests performed on a high G acceleration sled at Ford Motor Company.

A principal approach to simulate the airplane impact and the collapse of World Trade Center North Tower has been shown by Quan and Birnbaum [4]. Using the general purpose hydrocode AUTODYN the impact damage, fire induced strength reduction and progressive collapse were investigated. Both for the fuel propagation after tank break up and the thermodynamic burn processes assumptions have been taken. It is the aim of this paper to focus on the numerical aspects of simulating the fluid propagation after vessel break up. The release of a fluid out of a broken vessel after impact is not easily represented in a numerical simulation as the fluid flow and its interaction with structures can not be modelled using Lagrangian type element formulations. These elements, typically applied for structural analyses, fail under massive deformation and usually need then to be taken out of the simulation. Typical fluid dynamic discretization methods, so called Eulerian grids, would have to cover the whole space potentially being reached by the fluid flow and are therefore inefficient in a large three dimensional simulation. As an alternative method a coupled discretization using Lagrange elements and Lagrange type meshfree methods is proposed here. Meshfree methods have been introduced to structural dynamics more then ten years ago specifically to simulate processes including large deformation [1]. Originally developed as pure meshfree code, the EMI SOPHIA [3] provides now a new form of adaptivity that allows for more efficiency and accuracy. This is achieved by the use of finite elements as long as deformation is capable for the elements. At definable strain or failure thresholds any element can be transformed into one or more meshfree particles. This way, mass and volume of the original elements are conserved. As the particles interact with each other as well as with the remaining elements, all physical processes can be modelled continuously. The purpose of this study was to contribute to numerical simulation of the airplane impacts into the World Trade Center. It includes impact simulations of cylindrical vessels filled with water against thin walled rectangular shaped bars. It shows that coupled discretizations and specifically an adaptive FE-meshfree discretization offer the flexibility needed to gain both accuracy and efficiency in the simulation.

On September 3, 2018, two career Fire Lieutenants and two career Firefighters suffered burn injuries as a result of a residential structure fire. On September 10, 2018, personnel representing several other fire departments in the area, including a member of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) Advisory Board visited the fire scene to document the incident and collect material samples from the structure. The narrative and analysis presented in this report rely on the photographs and evidence collected on September 10, 2018, dispatch transcript [5] and videos recorded at the time of the incident, and interviews conducted by a local investigator between September 3, 2018 and September 7, 2018 with fire service personnel involved in the incident and the resident of the structure [6]. The LaGrange Fire Department invited FSRI to study this incident as part of FSRI’s Near-Miss Project which is supported by a DHS/FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The goal of this project is to enhance the safety and situational awareness of the fire service by applying fire dynamics research results to near-miss or line of duty injury fire incidents. By identifying factors that contributed to the incident, perhaps future incidents may be prevented. FSRI’s analysis of this incident will apply research results and utilize fire research tools, such as computer fire models, to examine key fire phenomena and tactical outcomes. This report will explain the incident, what occurred, why it occurred, and what can be done differently in the future to result in a more favorable outcome
