Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe thesis explores the complexities of solid waste management in the context of a growing intermediate city, specifically in Koudougou, Burkina Faso. It analyzes the territorial dynamics shaping solid waste management by examining the contributions of formal and non-institutional sector actors, as well as local populations. The methodology of this study relies on mixed research, incorporating various tools, including semi-structured interviews, household surveys, direct observations, GIS (geographic information system) tools, and mapping. The objective is to gather qualitative, quantitative, and spatial data.Failures in the current waste management system are highlighted, including a lack of infrastructure, logistics, human resources, and insufficient financial means. In Koudougou, the research revealed that 80% of surveyed households are dissatisfied with the existing waste management system. Moreover, only 10.63% of surveyed households subscribe to urban waste pre-collection services, which is a concerning statistic. These issues are compounded by improper waste management practices developing outside the official system. Approximately 65.51% of surveyed households claim to burn their waste in the street, 16.70% dispose of it directly in the street, and 7.16% abandon it in vacant spaces, posing environmental and health risks to the population and the ecosystem.Furthermore, this thesis highlights a diversity of waste recovery and valorization practices. Surveyed households are favorable to recovery activities, with 43% considering this practice positive. Overall, the study contributes to understanding the interactions between population growth, waste production, system failures, and actor practices. It emphasizes the urgency of rethinking waste management policies and strategies in Koudougou, considering all stakeholders and health, environmental, and socio-economic challenges

Der volle Inhalt der QuellePatient Centered Approach (PCA) is an approach that aims to provide holistic care. This approach would allow the health care workers to gain more understanding of their clients and know that they are multidimensional and not just an isolated part. By learning that their clients may also have physical, mental, psychosocial or spiritual needs, the health professionals will be able to integrate this into their care so as to improve client satisfaction and keep them returning to seek medical help. The second phase of the Maternal and Child Health Improvement Program phase 2 (MACHIP 2) in Burkina Faso will include a research part named PCA-MACHIP which will aim to develop and put in place a training program for healthcare professionals. This thesis aims to validate the PCA by trying to understand the meaning of the PCA given by the participantsin Burkina Faso’s context of care. This research project was done with an ethnographic approach involving interviews, field observations and group discussions in an effort to understand how to apply the PCA in a Burkinabe milieu. I did 35 semi directed interviews and 2 group discussions. I also took part in about 275 hours’ worth of consultations. In so doing, I was able to tease out 5 main themes upon my analysis i) the pregnancy consultations go beyond examining physical health issues (biophysical component), ii) the mood of health care professionals affect how they relate to the patients and the way they provide care, iii) the new mothers want to feel welcomed, listened to and respected as people, iv) some health care workers want to demonstrate their “expertise” by proving they know it all (sharing of power and rights is the work of the professionals and patients), v) some professionals are open to involving patients in the decision-making process as well as patients who demand to have a say in the care they receive (therapeutic alliance). I also identified certain barriers to the PCA: tolerance of violence against women and even justified in the health care setting, absence of male involvement, the way professionals are trained in school and the collaboration with traditional practitioners. These particularities of the person-centered care approach in Burkina Faso have been integrated into a training that is currently being carried out in care facilities.

The axis Burkina Faso / Ivory Coast and especially the mechanisms of integration and building the citizenship of immigrants in Ivorian rural areas. Ivory Coast, historic land of various migrations, enjoying political stability and socio-economic remarkably popular, throughout the West African sub-region has experienced in recent years a succession of socio-political crises, which create a divide between its people once living in harmony. This situation is linked to many social differentiation and exclusion of part of its foreign population. This study population, characterized by the Burkinabe immigrants from the village of Koudougou in west central of Ivory Coast, will direct us in our search through the understanding of their migration path, social differentiation against them in their place of settlement and the mechanisms they put in place to build their citizenship, bypassing the restrictions put in place by the host community

The style of governance in public universities of developing countries often poses problems and requires certainly changes in the system by the adoption of new and appropriate practices. Nowadays academic failure is becoming very common in African universities; however girls usually experience such failures as early as in high school and very often through the university level. The purpose of this research is to investigate the factors behind female failures at university and explore how the university governance in practice could better contribute to their success. A qualitative approach is use to collect data from female students and faculty members at the University of Koudougou (Burkina Faso) through a semi-structured interview. Fifteen (15) female students and three (03) faculty members had been interviewed and some structural dysfunctions in the actual governance at the University of Koudougou affecting female students’ academic success have been found.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis aims to contribute to the development of empirical knowledge in the scientific fields of legal anthropology and the study of kinship in Burkina Faso. More to the point, it focuses on the understanding of the consequences of legal pluralism in matrimonial dispute cases among the Mossi society in Koudougou, the country’s third most populous city. Marriage is a social indicator and a fundamental institution which allows the reconstruction of the social organization and kinship systems, a process which highlights the transversal effect of customary justice. This situation of legal pluralism induces the creation of processes such as innovation, resistance and legal interbreeding. It engenders a phenomenon of forum shopping, whereby social actors navigate through a multiplicity of tactics, among several legal orders, and is being analyzed through the lens of the perception of justice concept.
