Both women signify change in race relations in America, yet both reveal that the history of racial inequality in this country is far from over. As an Ivy League-educated descendent of slaves, Michelle Obama is not just unfamiliar to the mainstream media and the Washington political scene; during the 2008 presidential campaign, she was vilified as angry and unpatriotic. Beyonce, who controls the direction of her career in a way that pioneering black women entertainers could not, has nonetheless styled herself in ways that recall the distinct racial history of the Creole South. In the account of his missionary work, the Jesuit John Gerard (1564–1637) famously explained how, after a few years of penury in ‘Mass equipment’, Catholic houses had become so well equipped that priests were able to set about their work immediately upon their arrival. He recalled that in the last two years of his work (1604–06), he no longer needed to lodge in taverns but always found friendly dwellings to shelter him on his way. Most of these were run by women, whose prominence in the activity of harbouring was pointed out in many documents, including the minutes of the confession given to the Privy Council by the appellant priest Anthony Sherlock, who turned informer after his capture in 1606:[Sherlock] grew into acquaintance with Lady Stonor near Henley-on-Thames and stayed with her three or four years, often saying mass in her house. Next he moved to Warwicks. and at Brailes and Welsford was with a widow named Margaret Bishop for two or three years. Gender injustice is a challenge in Indonesian society in general and sadly this condition is still happening in the church which should teach and proclaim love, equality and justice for women and men as the image and of God. In this regard, the author will outline the roles and challenges of women in church ministry, the elements that affect the inequalities and injustices experienced by women in church ministry. Furthermore, the author also explores the thoughts and experiences of John Wesley as a "Methodist Father" regarding the role of women in church ministry. The exploration of John Wesley's traditions and thoughts is also one of the elements that need to be considered in recommending church ecclesiology that embodies gender equality and justice relations.

DESPITE the substantial and significant body of scholarly work on changing gender relations among African peoples who are (or were) primarily cultivators, the gender relations of predominantly pastoralist peoples have been, with a few notable exceptions, curiously excluded from historical examination. Instead, despite work which has shown the complexities of trying to determine the ‘status’ of East African pastoralist women, pastoralist gender relations seem to exist outside of history and be immune to change. Earlier anthropological studies that addressed pastoral gender relations applied a synchronic model, analyzing them in terms of either the pastoral mode of production or pastoralist ideology. Harold Schneider, for example, contended that among East African pastoralists, men's control of livestock gave them control of women, who were ‘usually thoroughly subordinated to men and thus unable to establish independent identity as a production force’. In his rich ethnography of Matapato Maasai, Paul Spencer claimed that both male and female Maasai believe in ‘the undisputed right of men to own women as “possessions” ’. Marriage, in his view, was therefore ‘the transfer of a woman as a possession from her father who reared her to her husband who rules her’. Melissa Llewelyn-Davies' study of Loita Maasai women in Kenya corroborated Spencer's findings. Loita Maasai women perceived themselves, and were perceived, as ‘property’, to be bought and sold by men with bridewealth. Llewelyn-Davis argued that ‘elder patriarchs’ used their control of property rights in women, children and livestock to control the production and reproduction of both livestock and human beings. Similarly, in his symbolic analysis of pastoral Maasai ideology, John Galaty contended that Maasai men were the ‘real’ pastoralists, while Maasai women were negatively equated with lower status hunters, providing an ideological explanation for their lower status. Thus, whether they attributed their findings to material or ideological sources (or some combination of the two), few anthropologists questioned the ‘undisputed right’ of contemporary male pastoralists ‘to own women as possessions’.

Critiques of the public/private divide in Western political thought do not go far enough in analyzing the full range and character of relations in the private sphere as demonstrated in this article, which analyzes John Locke's theorisation about the relative authority of wives, servants and slaves. A third-wave feminist analysis is used to illustrate the theoretical relevance of group-based identities that, far from having a uniform relation to the political power afforded to free (male) citizens, are hierarchically stratified. Thus it is demonstrated that a basic problem within second-wave feminist analysis of Lockean, and more broadly defined liberal thought, is the tendency to categorize women as ''wives'' of free citizens, and not to analyze adequately other dimensions of identity, thereby ignoring the explicit divisions and hierarchy among different groups of women in one of the earliest accounts of the private sphere in liberal theory.

The present study examined whether identity development occurs in tandem with personality development in emerging adulthood. Three‐wave longitudinal data on a sample of 351 female college students were used to answer questions about stability and change, direction of effects, and interrelated developmental trajectories. Four identity dimensions (i.e. commitment making, exploration in breadth, identification with commitment, and exploration in depth) and the Big Five were assessed. Identity and personality were found to be meaningfully related at the level of both the time‐specific adjacent measures and the underlying developmental trajectories with various degrees of convergence. Cross‐lagged analyses substantiated reciprocal influences and Latent Growth Curve Modelling substantiated common developmental pathways that partially mirrored the concurrent relations. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This study is concerned with investigating the treatment of women and gender roles in Glasworthy’s Forsyte Saga and Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy from a sociopragmatic perspective. The texts studied for this paper have not been evaluated to socio-pragmatic analysis that reflects the little application of this approach to literary works. As thus, the goal of this paper is to advance sociopragmatic analysis to these novels—there is salience from the style, narrative techniques, and language utilized by both writers in their books, which indeed points to pragmatic undercurrents that must be explored. The results indicate that social and political aspects are key elements for understanding women and gender issues in the selected texts. The integration of these contextual elements revealed how the two authors manipulated literary discourse to reflect on the power relations and struggles between men and women of their age. It can be claimed that sociopragmatic approaches provide opportunities for understanding the hidden layers within the selected texts in terms of social practices and interactions among characters. It is finally suggested that sociopragmatic approaches should be integrated into literary studies for a better and deeper understanding of literary discourse in general and crosscultural issues in particular.

The Code of Canon Law, promulgated by John Paul II in 1983, is a synthesis of the earlier 1917 Code and the doctrine of the Second Vatican Council. The Code contains norms which go well beyond a reform of the inner legal relations within the Catholic Church. A lot of them deal with the value and dignity of the human person, which shows a clear impact of the pontificate of John Paul II, who put a lot of emphasis on the given issue. The article discusses the fields of legal regulations in the Code which touch upon the issue of the human person, esp. freedom of religion, protection of unborn life, social rights, legal standing of women and the education of future generations. It points out the main difference between civil law (which also serves the dignity of the human person) and canon law, namely, the latter aims at the salvation of souls.

John Stuart Mill's commitment to empirically based inductive logic shapes the political substance of his theory, limiting his ability effectively to make the argument he wishes to make. The Subjection of Women is presented as a test case in which Mill wishes to argue for the justice and utility of the emancipation of women. His efforts are thwarted by his inability to argue from anything but an empirical basis, grounding his evidence in historical data which serve both to stereotype women's “good” qualities and to judge women's potential by what is observable from an admittedly unjust history.The essay reviews respected feminist analyses of Mill with an eye to establishing the natures and limitations of the various perspectives. It briefly discusses Mill's System of Logic which provides a detailed example, in pure form, of the methodological problems he faces in the Subjection. The essay then considers the method and content of The Subjection of Women, arguing that the shortcomings of Mill's political analysis are the result of his efforts to cling to an impossibly “pure” empiricist methodology.

We studied initial and long–term outcomes of speed–dating over a period of 1 year in a community sample involving 382 participants aged 18–54 years. They were followed from their initial choices of dating partners up to later mating (sexual intercourse) and relating (romantic relationship). Using Social Relations Model analyses, we examined evolutionarily informed hypotheses on both individual and dyadic effects of participants’ physical characteristics, personality, education and income on their dating, mating and relating. Both men and women based their choices mainly on the dating partners’ physical attractiveness, and women additionally on men's sociosexuality, openness to experience, shyness, education and income. Choosiness increased with age in men, decreased with age in women and was positively related to popularity among the other sex, but mainly for men. Partner similarity had only weak effects on dating success. The chance for mating with a speed–dating partner was 6%, and was increased by men's short–term mating interest; the chance for relating was 4%, and was increased by women's long–term mating interest. Isidore’s treatise De ortu et obitu patrum (On the Lifes and Deathes of the Fathers) contains biographies of outstanding biblical figures from Adam to Titus. Among them there are four women, to which the bishop of Seville dedicates special chapters. These are Esther, Judith, John Baptist’s mother Elisabeth and Mary, Mother of Jesus. He also mentions 26 women while presenting famous biblical patriarchs, judges, kings and prophets. Mothers and grandmothers, sisters and daughters, wives and widows participate in different important biblical events, support men on their way to salvation, as well as lead them to the moral fall and suffer because of it. Except four above mentioned heroins, Isidore describes biblical women very superficially, giving only those details of their lifes and characters that help him to introduce his male heroes. Although the erudite bishop admires the virtue both in men as well as in women and hates the sin regardless of the sinner’s sex, it seems that he considers the history of Salvation to be the history of relations between God and mankind represented first of all by a man. In Isidore’s feeling it is the latter who is responsible before the Lord not only for himself, but for the whole world and for a woman as well.

Abstract Over a half-century ago, I was involved in the early discussions of a sport history organization with the principal founder of NASSH, Guy Lewis. I recount the pre-NASSH years and the formation of NASSH including the all-male and physical education origins in a meeting with the National Physical Education Association for Men in 1971. Besides Guy Lewis, others are noted including Marvin Eyler, Carl Bode, Seward Staley, John Betts, Alan Metcalfe, Bruce Bennett, and Max Howell. Three problematic areas are discussed including Canadian–American relations; welcoming women into the organization; and embracing historians, American studies scholars, and others into NASSH. How the Journal of Sport History was created and the acceptance of the NASSH logo, an ancient Greek torch runner, are documented.

The Pre-Raphaelite art, intimately associated with the artists’ personal life, reflects the main gender relations of the Victorian era and its transformations. Ideal, vicious and suffering types of women inherent to the Victorian society are interpreted by the Pre-Raphaelite artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Milles, William Holman Hunt, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, in accordance with their moral and aesthetic views. The personal life of the artists pushes the boundaries of agreed standards and gives freedom in interpretation of archetypical images. Pre-Raphaelites also cultivate ideal female images in everyday life and in art, comparing and incorporating their real models with the characters from The New Life by Dante Alighieri, Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, and Alfred Tennyson’s poetry.

The Bible is indeed written in a patriarchal culture and someone finds it desperate to search for the Bible texts that support equality as it provides insufficient passages of equality between men and women. Nonetheless, to use the feminist perspectives is pivotal in searching for equality in reading the Bible texts. It helps people to learn from the efforts made by women in the Bible in order to get out of their oppression and to not take for granted of their miserable situation. Thus in this paper, the author makes a reinterpretation effort on the text of John 4, 1- 42 which has been interpreted in gender bias. The interpretation uses the historical-critical method with a hermeneutic approach to investigation (suspicion) from a feminist perspective. Hermeneutic investigative approach is an approach that reads the text critically and with assumptions (initial suspicion) about the elements of power relations that exist in the text that are dominative and investigates the text. This new approach can result in a new understanding and appreciation of the figures and actions of the Samaritan woman who has been seen as a prostitute and a sinful woman.

The Prison for Women, Kingston Penitentiary, and Collins Bay Penitentiary each offered an increasing variety of vocational training opportunities to incarcerated people in the mid-20th century. This article examines vocational training in these Kingston-area prisons from 1950 to the mid-1960s and argues that access to these programs was based largely on gender and age. Foucault’s idea of governmentality supports analysis of how the Penitentiary Service of Canada, reformers, and prisoners understood the process of learning how to work. Women incarcerated at the Prison for Women were trained in fields that mirrored domestic labour, and limited numbers of younger women were given access to trial vocational training in women-dominated fields such as hairdressing. Young men in their teens and twenties incarcerated at Collins Bay Penitentiary were given access to skilled trades, while older men at Kingston Penitentiary could try to qualify for transfer to Collins Bay Penitentiary by taking basic educational course upgrades. These vocational programs were supported by the John Howard Society of Ontario and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Kingston, local prisoner aid societies that helped formerly incarcerated people find jobs and coordinated with prison administration to bolster rehabilitation programs.
La Prison des femmes, le Pénitencier de Kingston et le Pénitencier de Collins Bay offraient chacun une variété croissante de possibilités de formation professionnelle aux personnes incarcérées au milieu du 20e siècle. Current historical and anthropological scholarship asserts that narratives of events are not necessarily historical ““truths”” but interpretations made by writers who are socially and culturally situated. This article analyzes multiple perspectives, including those of sailors, merchants, Natives, and missionaries, to gain insight into the ways in which imperial power in the Sandwich Islands was cultivated, negotiated, and redeployed. In particular, the article focuses on the 1827 firing of cannon at American missionaries in Lāāhaināā, Māāui, by the British ship John Palmer in response to several Native Hawaiian women who boarded the ship to engage in sexual relations, and to the protest by a converted Native chief. This article argues that, although Native women's bodies had been commodified since Capt. James Cook's time, by the 1820s they served as sites of desire, contestation, and economic gain.

Umumnya, penumpangibu hamil yang menempuh perjalanan jauh dengan menggunakan kereta api. Tujuan daripenelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana proses sosialisasi SOP No. 1/KS.102/II/MMH/9001/2017 yang dilakukan Humas kepada ibu hamil tentang peraturan perusahaandengan menggunakan teori tindak tutur. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode wawancara,observasi dan dokumentasi. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teoritindak tutur milik John Searle. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa Humas dapat menyampaikantuturan dengan jelas kepada penumpang. Tindak tutur lokusi menyampaikan pernyataan isitertentu untuk mendapatkan hubungan kerja sama yang baik dengan penumpang. Tindaktutur ilokusi disampaikan melalui berbagai media, antara lain media massa, media audio visualberupa KA TV, kegiatan Humas seperti himbauan dari announcer, talkshow dan jumpa persserta iklan media massa berupa roll banner, dan spanduk di stasiun. Generally, passengers of pregnant women who travel long distances by train. The purpose of this study was to find out how the process of socializing SOP No. 1 / KS.102 / II / MMH / 9001/2017 conducted by PR to pregnant women about company regulations usingspeech act theory. This research uses interview, observation and documentation methods. Thetheory used in this study uses John Searle's theory of speech acts. The results of the study showthat Public Relations can convey speech clearly to passengers. Location speech acts conveycertain content statements to get a good working relationship with passengers. Illocutionaryspeeches were delivered through various media, including mass media, audio-visual mediain the form of TV trains, public relations activities such as appeals from announcers, talkshows and press conferences and mass media advertisements in the form of roll banners, and banners at stations. Forty-five years ago, U.S. Indian Commissioner John Collier helped persuade the members of the Pan American Union (now the Organization of American States) to establish the Inter-American Indian Institute “to elucidate the problems affecting the Indian groups within their respective jurisdictions, and to cooperate with one another, on a basis of mutual respect for the inherent rights of each to exercise absolute liberty in solving the ‘Indian Problem’ in America.” Operating under an international convention concluded in November 1940 and governed by a board of 21 state representatives, the Mexico City-based Institute is charged with “scientific investigations,” technical assistance to national Indian agencies and “the training of men and women experts devoted to the problems of the Indian.” Institute policy is also guided by an Inter-American Indian Congress of governmental administrators of Indian affairs, which is convened every four years.

Apart from a few treatises on the life of women in an extra-marital state and some short speeches about the dignity of Christian women, John Chrysostom did not engage in longer discourses about marriage. Chrysostom expressed himself most broadly on this subject in his commentary to „The First Letter to the Corinthians”. This and over a dozen other utterances by Chrysostom which I found in his writings allow us to suppose that his assessment of the value of the union between a believer and a non-believer is dictated by the realism of the epoch and not by pure dogma. Such a tone of teaching resonates with the moods of the Antioch community, which seethed with the luxuriant life of the most varied religious communities. Here, a non-believer was a partner also in marriage, hence the use of the „Pauline privilege” in order to remove such a one from a marriage would expose Christians to the accusation of a lack of tolerance at the very least. Knowing his community very well, John Chrysostom brings to the foreground the principle that a non-believer in a married couple is a problem between the non-believer and the Lord. Civil law does not make an impediment of this (such was the Roman tradition) and Canon law (the synods of the 4th century) should not make such impediments either. „Your partner’s relations with the Lord”, Chrysostom continually reminds us, „should not decide about the continuation or the dissolution of the marital union”. The „defence” of a spouse from outside the Christian politeia is also an opportunity to obtain new members of this community.

They incorporate postmodern approaches to historical analysis as well as the classic concerns of labor history with material conditions, social relations, and working-class political consciousness. The contributors examine the multiple meanings of discourse and popular culture while insisting that it is indeed possible to recapture women's experience in some measure. They generally move beyond the dichotomy of celebrating women's heroism and denouncing sexism, instead showing how solidarity between laboring women and men could be intimately interwoven with male domination. Professor Louise Richardson is a political scientist focusing on terrorism and political violence. She became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford in January 2016, having previously served at the Universities of St. Andrews and Harvard. She has written widely on international terrorism, British foreign and defence policy, security, and international relations. Professor Richardson holds a BA in History from Trinity College Dublin, an MA in Political Science from UCLA as well as an MA and PhD in Government from Harvard University. She visited the University of Warwick in November 2017 to deliver a talk on her career and being a female leader, as part of the University’s ‘Inspiring Women’ series. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the development of employee representation systems in the USA from the Ludlow Massacre of 1914 up to the events in 2015 at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The study begins with the strike at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation which led to the deaths of several women and children. In the aftermath of Ludlow, John D. Rockefeller, Jr, visited the mines in 1915 and persuaded workers that an internal employee representation plan would serve their interests better than an outside trade union. Rockefeller’s influence shaped American industrial relations until the passage of the National Labor Relations (Wagner) Act in 1935, when company unions were outlawed. The ongoing decline of unions and collective bargaining has prompted academic speculation that a return to internal workplace committees might lead to a rejuvenated labor movement in the USA. Design/methodology/approach The study uses both archival materials and secondary sources to construct a narrative of one important element of industrial relations. It explains Wagner’s ban on company unions as a component of his economic agenda. Company unions provided a voice for a firm’s workers, but Wagner believed they were powerless to redistribute corporate wealth. The decline of American unions is so profound that they no longer serve an economic role in our capitalist system, but workers’ voice in the workplace remains an important consideration. Findings The key finding of this paper is that employee representation plans are not merely an industrial relations anachronism but continue to be relevant to today’s workplace. The paper compares an influential representation plan developed in 1914 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr, to current schemes of representation and argues that labor law should be modified to permit modern versions of the older “company unions”. Researchlimitations/implications Works councils play a crucial role in European labor relations, and they could do so in America if labor laws were modified to permit it. An exposition of the deep historical context of representation helps to legitimate the concept. Future research into specific cases, including an international perspective, would add to an understanding of the benefits and costs of representation. Originality/value The originality of this paper is its combination of a historical event and a contemporary case study that brings together a theme present in managerial history for over a century. By emphasizing the aims of Rockefeller, Jr. in 1914 and the objectives of the Volkswagen Company in 2014 in establishing a participatory workplace, we gain a long-term framework through which to evaluate a particular managerial technique. The paper also suggests ways to bring our labor laws into conformance with the idea of employee representation.

In recent criticism, arguments about whether domesticity in The Wide, Wide World (1850) empowered or disempowered women, and whether it was embraced or critiqued by Warner and her contemporaries, have been founded upon, or at least buttressed by, readings of horses and horsemanship. The interpretation of Ellen Montgomery's riding lessons as a metaphor for her disempowerment, and the ubiquitous denunciation of John Humphreys as "brutal horse-beater," however, have little grounding in the nineteenth-century horsemanship on which Warner drew. While for centuries horses in Western culture had been associated with human passions and horsemanship with their forcible domination, a combination of new methods for disciplining equines and new forms of recreational riding rendered the equine body, in the nineteenth century, discursively situated to communicate the internalized discipline and self-regulation that was necessary to make a human body middle class. Through horseback riding and other lessons, Ellen attains the particular mental and bodily development necessary for her to become a proper, sentimental, middle-class woman who is inserted into a network of power relations-a network in which Ellen attains power over other kinds of women who fail to meet the standards that she does. Historical contextualization also reveals that John's horsemanship accords quite well with nineteenth-century standards and would not have been seen as abusive by his contemporaries. As nearly all arguments about The Wide, Wide World's resistance to domestic ideology have been predicated upon John's propensity for horse-beating, this essay calls for a reexamination of what has become a principal claim of Warner criticism.

Abstract Background: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are one of the main treatment strategies for the clinical management of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer (BC). Despite prolonged time to recurrence and initial clinical responses, >20% of patients eventually relapse, and previous studies have shown an association of poor anti-proliferative response to AIs and worse outcome. High immune activity in ER+ tumors may be associated with worse outcome, in contrast to ER-negative BC where immune infiltration is a feature associated with better outcome. Our work focused on understanding the correlations between immune cell infiltration and response to AI. Methods: All patients with ER+ HER2- tumors within the bottom 15% of Ki67 anti-proliferative responders to AIs (poor responders [PRs]; n=177) were selected from the PeriOperative Endocrine Therapy for Individualizing Care (POETIC) trial and matched on baseline Ki67 levels to good responders (GRs) within the 50% showing the best response (n=190). Response to AI was measured by the Ki67 percentage change after 2 weeks of treatment. PRs were further divided into groups expressing high ESR1 (PRs ESR1HIGH; n=119) and low ESR1 (PRs ESR1LOW; n=58) levels to represent PR subgroups that showed partial or no response to AIs. The percentage of stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) was assessed. Multiple immunofluorescence was performed for ER, CD3, CD20, CD68, FOXP3, and CD3/FOXP3 in 15 baseline samples from each of the GR, PR ESR1HIGH, and PR ESR1LOW populations and immune cell density in stromal or tumor compartments was estimated. Spearman correlations of TILs with Consensus tumor microenvironment (TME) deconvolution and Molecular Signatures Database hallmark gene sets were conducted. The relationship between the immune markers’ density and genes, hallmark gene sets and Consensus TME was assessed. Results: The percentage of TILs was significantly higher in the PR ESR1HIGH and PR ESR1LOW compared to the GRs (adjusted p< 0.05). As expected, TILs were highly correlated with T cells (particularly T-regulatory cells) and immune hallmark gene sets. There was a tendency for higher density of each of the immune markers in PRs compared to GRs, with significant differences being observed in stromal B-cell marker CD20 density (p< 0.05). Analysis showed a significant correlation between TILs and stromal FOXP3 marker density (FDR< 0.05), and stromal biomarker density was highly correlated to the gene expression of the encoding genes of the same tumors (CD3/CD3D, FOXP3/FOXP3, and CD20/MS4A1) (FDRs< 0.05). There was also a strong and significant correlation between the stromal expression of CD20, CD3, FOXP3, and CD3/FOXP3 with the immune hallmark gene sets (FDRs< 0.05). Finally, the immune phenotyping showed the expected correlations with TME deconvolution, with particularly strong correlations of CD20 and CD3 with B- and T-cell gene signatures, respectively (FDRs< 0.05). Conclusions: Different immune features indicated a broad involvement of several immune cell types in PRs to AIs, suggesting that the immune system might be associated with resistance of ER+ breast tumors to AI treatment. Spatial gene expression profiling is ongoing to characterize these tumors further and investigate potential mechanisms of AI resistance. The sexual division of labor and the social and economic value of women's work in the home has been a problem that scholars have struggled with at least since the advent of the “second wave” women's movement, but it has never entered into the primary discourses of political science. This paper argues that John Stuart Mill'sPolitical Economyprovides innovative and useful arguments that address this thorny problem. Productive labor is essential to Mill's conception of property, and property was vital to women's independence in Mill's view. Yet since Mill thought most women would choose the “career” of wife and mother rather than working for wages, then granting that work productive status would provide a radical and inventive foundation for women's equality. Mill, however, is ambiguous about the productive status of domestic labor, and is thereby representative of a crucial failure in political economic thought, as well as in egalitarian liberal thought on gender. But because Mill at the same time develops a conception of production that goes well beyond the narrow limits offered by other prominent political economists, he offers contemporary political scientists and theorists a way to rethink the relationship of reproductive to productive labor, the requirements for gender equality, and the accepted categories of political economy.

The research paper begins by explaining the disciplinary surplus of a transformative approach to research, which aims at a minimalist intervention in the power relations of science. Methodologically, the paper combines self-positioning, auto-ethnographic notes, a critical analysis of power relations, semiotics, and critical discourse analysis. The main subject of its research, stigma and stigmatisation, is defined through the triad ‘freedom of expression – discrimination – protection against incitement to hatred’. The incitement to hatred, synonymous with hate speech, may be traced in stigmatisation, which serves as a tool of discrimination and exclusion. The starting-point of an argument urging the need for individual and collective responsibility for the lack of social bond (the lack which partly results from stigma as an element of hate speech) is a grasp of the role of political bipolarity.
Another conceptualisation, important for the elaboration of this theme, is derived from classic liberal defence of freedom of expression, and thus of the human rights of women (John S. Mill and Harriet Taylor Mill). This defence is pitted against the ‘normal’, ‘mundane’. In Goffman’s reading of stigma, too, the ‘normal’ in socio-cultural life is perceived as destructive of human equality. In the field of modern scientific research, the opposite of the ‘normal’ is the stigma of conflict, that is, maladjustment. In some cases it is even actual or alleged political orientation that becomes a stigma, which points to the political marking of scientific hierarchies and to the formation of a sector margin. The paper concludes with a strategic option at the level of subjectivity: subjectivity may be processed by our adopting the stigma and by expressing the will to deconstruct the silence which permits an illegitimate exercise of power. In order to transform the mechanisms of scientific authorities, it is necessary to establish a functional instance for the enforcement of ethical science and research integrity.

The article analyses the film reception issues of I. Murdoch’s biography in epistemological and historiographical perspectives. Due to the productive interaction of different types of biographical works, the mechanism of presentation / perception / cognition is mainly realized through references and reflection as an individual ability to supplement the “truth” of factual biographical material with other relations such as “interpretability”, “realizability” that form the so-called cognitive complex related to the perception peculiarities of biopic both as a separate genre and in the context of other biographical genres: memoirs, literary biography, etc. In the global context of biopics about writers, the film “Iris” (2001), directed by Richard Eyre, is perceived quite ambiguously. This receptive „ambiguity” is explained by the fact that R. Eyre deviates to some extent from the established canons of the biopic genre, building his plot on the contrast of two planes of relations between famous intellectuals – Bayley and Murdoch – as young, talented, charismatic, open-minded in her relationships Iris and as an elderly woman suffering from an incurable disease. Since it is almost impossible to cover her life in all its manifestations and activities in one perspective, the director resorts to intermedial dimensions and techniques of presenting biographical material. Relying on the documentary basis and memoirs of Murdoch’s husband John Bayley (“Elegy of Iris” and “Iris and Her Friends”), due to chronotopic shifts, television biography in the biopic, excerpts from Murdoch’s lectures, emphasizing her quotes scattered in the film, R. Eyre frames his model of Murdoch’s biography. This strategy allowed him, albeit fragmentarily, to show one of the world's smartest women in various guises: as a writer, as a philosopher and as an ordinary person, recreating the happiest and the most tragic fragments of her life, especially during the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

O contrato social do século XVIII deu origem ao liberalismo, modelo político e econômico, no qual cabe ao Estado garante a lei, a defesa da propriedade e a oferta de bens públicos, deixando que o mercado faça a sua própria regulação. A partir o século XX, mudanças geopolíticas, exploração de recursos naturais e guerras, desenvolveram mercados de consumo e, no entendimento da autora Minouche Shafik, juntamente com a tecnologia impactaram nas relações sociais e de trabalho em escala global. Esta pesquisa, desenvolvida pelo método dedutivo, com o uso da técnica de levantamento bibliográfico, pretende analisar a sustentabilidade de um novo contrato social apresentada por Shafik, apoiando sua proposta na teoria cooperativa de John Rawls, na teoria contextual funcionalista de David Schmidtz, nos custos dos direitos de Stephen Holmes e Cass Sunstein e na proposta de desenvolvimento sustentável de Ignacy Sachs. A proposta desse novo contrato social foca suas expectativas na tecnologia, no papel das mulheres, trabalho formal e previdência social. Dessa forma, a hipótese de pesquisa é: para que um novo contrato social tenha sucesso é necessário que as mulheres, em maior número na população mundial, ocupem mais frentes de trabalho formal. Para testar essa proposta e a hipótese, aplica-se o critério Kaldor-Hicks da Análise Econômica do Direito com a qual pretendeu-se avaliar a sua eficiência de eventual política pública originada da proposta de Minouche Shafik. ABSTRACT The social contract of the 18th century gave rise to liberalism, a political and economic model, in which it is up to the State to guarantee the law, the defense of property and the supply of public goods, leaving the market to make its own regulation. From the twentieth century, geopolitical changes, exploitation of natural resources and wars, developed consumer markets and, in the understanding of author Minouche Shafik, together with technology impacted social and work relations on a global scale. This research, developed by the deductive method, using the bibliographic survey technique, intends to analyze the sustainability of a new social contract presented by Shafik, supporting his proposal in the cooperative theory of John Rawls, in the contextual functionalist theory of David Schmidtz, in costs of the rights of Stephen Holmes and Cass Sunstein and the sustainable development proposal of Ignacy Sachs. The proposal for this new social contract focuses its expectations on technology, the role of women, formal work and social security. Thus, the research hypothesis is: for a new social contract to be successful, it is necessary that women, in greater numbers in the world population, occupy more formal work fronts. In order to test this proposal and the hypothesis, the Kaldor-Hicks criterion of the Economic Analysis of Law is applied, with which it was intended to evaluate its efficiency of a possible public policy originated from the proposal of Minouche Shafik. The study investigated the relations between body dissatisfaction and emotional dysregulation. This is the first research focusing on the mediating effect of emotional dysregulation on the relationship between negative affect and body dissatisfaction in a Russian female population. It is particularly relevant given that both emotional dysregulation and body dissatisfaction may lead to the emergence of psychopathological symptoms (e.g., depression, self-injurious behavior, and eating disorders). 778 girls and women aged 14–40 years (M=19,8; SE=3,31) participated in the study. The following measures were used: Body Image Questionnaire (Skugarevsky, 2006), Emotional Dysregulation Questionnaire (Polskaya, Razvaliaeva, 2017), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross, John, 2003; Russian version by Pankratova, Kornienko, 2017) and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson et al., 1988; Russian version by Osin, 2012). High level of body dissatisfaction was significantly associated with high scores of rumination, avoidance and difficulties in mentalizing from the Emotional Dysregulation Questionnaire, high level of negative affect and low level of positive affect. Respondents with high body dissatisfaction also preferred expressive suppression to cognitive reappraisal for emotion regulation. Regression analysis showed that negative affect (b=0,20; p<0,001) and emotion dysregulation scales — rumination (b=0,66; p<0,001), avoidance (b=0,69; p<0,001) and difficulties in mentalizing (b=0,33; p<0,001) — significantly predicted body dissatisfaction (F(4, 773)=130,8, p<0,001; R2=0,405; R2adj=0,402). Emotion dysregulation scales mediated the effect of negative affect on body dissatisfaction.

With surfing debuting at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics (postponed from summer 2020 due to the COVID 19 global pandemic) it is timely to consider surfing and the national identifications women in Ireland may have with this sport. As Lee Bush states, ‘with so little scholarship on surfing women, descriptive studies are needed as a foundation for launching future interpretive and critical studies.’[1] Twelve women who surf in Ireland spoke about the links their surfing may or may not have with their national identity. Previous academic inquiry on links between national identity and sport on the island of Ireland has almost exclusively focused on men’s experiences of team sports and issues of ‘Irishness’.[2] ‘Irishness’ is globally recognised and stereotypically linked to traditional and indigenous Irish sports such as Gaelic football and a range of other cultural activities. Research into women’s sport participation has largely been restricted to the study of soccer in the Republic of Ireland,[3] and gendered evaluations of various lifestyle and health surveys.[4] Katie Liston, a key researcher in sport and gender relations in Ireland, highlights that ‘there seems to be an increasing diversity in the kinds of activities in which people participate in’,[5] and that there is a shift towards ‘lifestyle’ activities for adults as diversity increases in young people’s participation in sports and leisure activities. Against the backdrop of Liston’s work, this article delves deeper into data collected as part of a wider research project, discussing whether or not women who surf in Ireland do so as part of a process designed to construct and reflect their national identities related to this arguably ‘postmodern’[6] ‘lifestyle sport’,[7] in which Ireland will be represented on the Olympic stage for the first time in 2021. The article presents for the Lithuanian audience an interdisciplinary approach of literary canon studies that integrates diverse methods of various disciplines (sociology of literature and culture, literary and cultural history, teaching of literature, text reception and aesthetic response history, memory and media research and bibliography studies). The most intense development of literary canon studies can be observed in Western Europe and the United States in the last decade of the 20th century. This was due to the fact that the scholars engaged in the field of postcolonialism, gender studies and neo-Marxism gave it a strong impulse by initiating a debate about insufficient representation of some social groups (women, racial or ethnic minorities and people from lower social strata) in high school curricula in the USA. The debate was expanded into theoretical polemics of whether the canon is formed by means of objective aesthetic criteria or, on the contrary, canon depends on the social contract. Methodologically, investigations of literary canon that are genetically related to the tradition of sociology of culture seem to be the most productive, while this perspective provides an apparatus for a detailed investigation of relations between specific interests of literary field and wider national, social or group interests.The framework of this article is based on the studies of John Guillory, Renate von Heydebrand and Simone Winko. Their essential starting point is the understanding of the canon as a sociocultural process in which the political elite selects a corpus of significant texts in accordance with tradition and formulates practices that ensure the transmission of those texts for future generations. Therefore, canon formation turns to be a strategy based on complex relations of evaluation, cognition and actions that aims to conserve this selected knowledge and transmit it to future generations. The structure of the canon is directly related to the notion of literature and literariness; a society (or its group) defines its canon by considering what they recognize as valuable.Unlike religious canons, which can only be constructed by theologians, there are a lot of canonizing institutions (schools, universities, literary criticism, theatre repertoire, book market, libraries, etc.) involved in the formation of literary canons. They do not create any well-balanced system of the canon but rather conduct diverse practices of canonization. We can distinguish a micro and macro level in the process of canon formation. The micro level contains a lot of separate actions of canonization that propel the canonization process which enables the canon formation at macro level. Origin, stabilization and transformation of literary canon are multidimensional processes, thus it is essential not to lose sight of the interaction of separate dimensions.

Abstract Background: POETIC was a phase III clinical trial, with patients randomised 2:1 to 2-week perioperative aromatase inhibitor (POAI) vs control for postmenopausal women with oestrogen receptor positive (ER+) early breast cancer (BC) (Smith et al., Lancet Oncology 2020). Our previous study on POETIC trial patients with ER+ human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive (HER2+) BC suggested both HER2 enriched subtype (HER2-E) and immune enrichment pre-POAI (baseline, B) are main drivers of poor early response to POAI (Bergamino et al., 2022). However, some patients with HER2-E or immune enriched BC at B still showed good response to POAI. In this study, we aim to further investigate a sub-cohort of ER+ HER2+ BC from the POETIC trial, including a subset of aforementioned HER2-E tumours, to further explore the multi-modal molecular characteristics of the tumours resistant to POAI. Methods: Proliferation rate was assessed as percentage of cancer cells stained by Ki67. Patient POAI response was determined by Ki67 reduction at 2 weeks of treatment. A sub-cohort of 37 patients were selected based on response and classified as poor responders (PR, reduction < 30%, n=18), good responders (GR, reduction > 90%, n=11) and good responders with HER2-E BC at B (GR, reduction > 65%, n=8). Paired B and post-POAI (surgery, S) samples were taken from each patient of the sub-cohort. Multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) was performed on these samples, measuring the immune cell densities in stroma and tumour compartments using five biomarkers: CD3 (all T cells), CD20 (B cells), CD68 (Macrophages), FOXP3 (regulatory T cells), and CD3 FOXP3 co-expression. The samples were also profiled using Breast Cancer 360TM (NanoString, BC360), covering the expressions of 758 genes and 46 biological signatures. Wilcoxon test, hierarchical clustering and spearman correlation test were performed to compare the tumour characteristics of GR and PR. Results: In this study, two B and four S samples were not achievable for mIF experiments due to low tumour content. At B (n = 35), among the five mIF biomarker measurements in stroma and tumour, only the stromal CD3 density was significantly different between GR (median = 0.0013) and PR (median = 0.0003, p = 0.041). In GR, HER2-E BC at B were separated into immune-high and immune-low groups with mIF biomarkers at B; the immune-high group was more likely to change into luminal subtypes post-POAI, while the immune-low group remained HER2-E. After POAI, the density changes in five mIF biomarkers in stroma and CD68 in tumour were all significantly higher in PR than GR (Table 1, n of paired samples = 62). The BC360 signatures of BC p53 (p < 0.001), BC proliferation (p < 0.001), LumB (p < 0.001) and HER2-E correlation coefficients (p < 0.001) were significantly downregulated in GR after POAI, while LumA correlation coefficients (p < 0.001) were notably increased. Conclusions: Our results suggest that for this sub-cohort, increased stromal immune response is associated with poor response to 2-week POAI in ER+ HER2+ early BC. HER2-E GR display visible immune heterogeneity at B. Lower-risk BC characteristics were exhibited in GR after the 2-week treatment. Further integrating mIF imaging data and additional digital spatial profiling are ongoing to reveal additional characteristics of ER+ HER2+ BC and tumour microenvironment predicting POAI resistance. Abstract Background: Approximately 10% of estrogen receptor positive (ER+) early breast cancers (EBC) are human epidermal growth factor positive/overexpressed (HER2+). Resistance to aromatase inhibitors (AIs) is poorly understood among ER+HER2+ BC. We aimed to identify biomarkers of response and resistance using the HER2+ tumours in the POETIC trial. Methods: POETIC was a phase III trial of post-menopausal women with ER+ EBC randomized 2:1 to 2-weeks of peri-surgical AI vs control, followed by standard-of-care. Baseline formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples from 342 ER+HER2+ BC (237 treated/105 controls) were gene expression profiled using Breast cancer 360™ panel (NanoString) covering intrinsic subtypes and 40 key biological signatures. New molecular subgroups were identified using consensus clustering (CC).Proliferation rate was estimated as percentage of cancer-cells staining for Ki67. Ki67 response was defined by percentage-changes from baseline to surgery: poor (PR; reduction <50%), intermediate (IR; 50-75%) and good (GR; >75%). Residual Ki67 at 2 weeks timepoint (Ki672w) was defined as High (H) (≥ 10%) vs Low (L) (<10%). Association of molecular features with Ki67 response was assessed using logistic regression models and with time to recurrence (TTR) using multivariable Cox regression models adjusted for post-surgery clinicopathological variables: grade, tumour size, nodal status and age. Results: Ki672w was measured for all treated samples (n = 227, 48% H, 52% L) and a fraction of controls (n = 50, 96% H, 4% L). At baseline, 45% of tumours were HER2-enriched (HER2-E), 53% Luminal A/B and 2% Basal-Like. HER2-E associated with high Ki672W (84% H, 16% L) compared to non-HER2-E (29% H, 71% L, p<0.001). Amongst the 40 BC360 signatures, 9 were significantly associated with Ki67 response (Table). High expression of endocrine-related and apoptosis signatures associated with GR while HRD and TP53 with PR. These features were also related to Ki672W, with additional signatures involved in immune-checkpoint component and immune-enrichment (IM) (IDO1, PD-L1, IFN-gamma and T-reg) associated with high Ki672W.. Using CC, 4 molecular subgroups predicting differential response to AI were identified. Cluster (C) 1 was characterized by overexpression of IM features and low ER signaling (42%); C2 low IM but highest ERBB2 expression (15%); C3 ESR1 high and PgR low (4%) and C4 high endocrine signaling and lowest ERBB2 expression (39%). Distribution of Intrinsic subtypes varied across these molecular subgroups with the majority of C1 being HER2-E (62%) and Luminal B (27%); C2 HER2-E (74%); C3 Luminal B (64%) and C4 Luminal B (55%) and Luminal A (30%). HER2-E had significantly poorer TTR (HR 2.14; 95%CI1.11-4.17; p=0.0224) compared to Luminal tumours, remaining significant (HR 2.55, 95%CI1.14-5.69; p=0.0222) in the multivariable analysis. C2 (HR 4.67, 95%CI 1.90-11.51; p<0.001) and C4 (HR 2.42, 95%CI1.05-4.5.58; p=0.0385) were independent predictors of shorter TTR compared to C1, adding significant value beyond intrinsic subtypes (Likelihood ratio test, p=0.00429). Conclusions: Our results confirm that HER2-E, TP53 mutation, HRD and IM features are the main components driving poor early response to AI in ER+/HER2+ EBC. Novel molecular subgroups identify additional non-HER-E tumours not responding to AI with an increased risk of relapse. The appropriate additional treatment warrants further investigation. RESUMENEntre las muchas fuentes documentales que el historiador tiene a su disposición para abordar sus estudios, el diario personal se presenta, quizás, como una de las más interesantes. Este tipo de materiales no solo permiten conocer algo mejor los pensamientos y emociones de sus propios autores, sino también determinadas facetas del momento histórico en el que se concibieron, de ahí que su contenido resulte fundamental a la hora de comprender un fenómeno migratorio tan peculiar como el que tuvo lugar en el Oeste americano durante la segunda mitad del siglo xix.Partiendo de las propuestas de Ralph K. White y de John Mack Faragher, este artículo presenta una readaptación del Value analysis, proponiendo una selección de 65 valores y 7 grupos temáticos, que se han utilizado para determinar cuáles eran los principales intereses y preocupaciones de los pioneros estadounidenses, a partir del estudio de catorce diarios de la época. This type of material not only allows us to know a little better the thoughts and emotions of their own authors but also certain aspects of the historical moment in which they were conceived, therefore its content is fundamental when it comes to understand a migration phenomenon as unique as the one that took place in the American West during the second half of the nineteenth century.Based on the proposals of Ralph K. The article considers the language means of verbalization of conceptual metaphors “Family” and “Love” in the contemporary short stories of the British and American writers. The investigation also involves determining the principles and the algorithm of rendering these conceptual metaphors in translation. Concepts are defined as mental structures used by a person in the process of thinking. Concepts in fiction are called artistic concepts. They are verbalized with the help of lexical and stylistic devices and are represented by conceptual metaphors. Conceptual analysis helps to characterize the key concept in the text of fiction, and, at the same time, such analysis can be a good criterion for assessing the quality of literary translation. In this paper, we suggest four stages of conceptual analysis in translation. The first stage includes defining the main concept in the text; the second involves formulating the conceptual metaphor (CM) in the text; determining the lexical and stylistic means of verbalization of the CM. The third stage consists in the text translation and editing, and the fourth-in the comparison of the source and target texts. At the first stage, it is also necessary to consider how the key text concept is represented in the folklore, proverbs, and aphorisms. Our investigation focuses on the concepts of “Family” and “Love”, therefore we chose several famous proverbs as the illustration of these concepts: As the twig is bent, so the tree is inclined; Men build houses, women build homes; A mother’s heart is always with her children. The major concept in the short story “Oliver’s Evolution” by John Updike is: “Family”, and the two microconcepts are “Father” and “Son”. The main character Oliver was growing as a weak boy, vulnerable to different injuries and misfortunes. But when he became an adult and had a family, he started feeling responsibility for his children and his wife, he became the support of his children. The main CM is verbalized by means of the extended metaphor and gradation and can be formulated as FATHER IS THE TREE FOR HIS CHIDREN. Another story “My Mother’s Many Scarves”, published in August 2022, is an example of flash fiction stories, two-three pages long, usually with a very important ending. The concept “Family” includes two microconcepts – “Mother” and “Daughter”. The author Andree Guedron describes the relations of love and understanding between the mother and the daughter. The narrator’s mother liked scarves, and her daughter inherited different things from her: brooches, jewelry. But most valuable was a bag of scarves which the mother bought in different countries. The concept is verbalized, first of all, by numerous repetitions of the noun scarf. The scarves become a metonymic detail, a symbol in the story. That is why the main conceptual metaphor of the text can be formulated as MOTHER’S SCARVES ARE SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE. The daughter realizes that she inherited from the mother not only material things, but also spiritual traits, behavior, emotions. At the same time, the concept “Love” is also realized in this story, as love of the daughter to her mother. Another short story where this concept is actualized is “Bigfoot Love” by E. Gary. It is a fantastic and allegoric story of love of a man and an ape, and the major CM can be formulated as LOVE IS A BIG FORCE. This conceptual metaphor is verbalized with the help of such stylistic devices as hyperbole and extended metaphor. In translation, two major strategies were used to retain the aesthetic and stylistic effect: retaining the conceptual model with the same language expression; retaining the conceptual models with somewhat different linguistic expression, with the use of such translation techniques as synonymic substitution and modulation.
