Design science research (DSR) is increasingly prominent in the information systems discipline. However, despite a lively discourse, and methodical and conceptual advances notwithstanding, DSR contributions are rarely cumulative and mostly remain isolated. This lack of cumulative research impedes scientific progress and practical impact. Our goal in this paper is to help establish a cumulative tradition in DSR by proposing (1) a general, consensus-oriented, evolutionary process model of scientific progress based on a synthesis of different streams in the philosophy of science, (2) quality criteria for DSR contributions corresponding to the individual steps in the process model, (3) actions that the IS community as a whole can take to facilitate adherence to these quality criteria. We expect that our work can pave the way towards developing a more cumulative research tradition in DSR and thereby foster genuine scientific progress in the field.

Society is in the era of globalization. Communication methods include transfers among commodities, facilities, information, systems, thought, knowledge, etc., causing many interactions among society. As a result of these situations, an individual’s world can be altered, causing multi dipoles. Currently, an individual is able to get as much information as he or she desires. But on the other hand, individuals are also losing information, goods, foods, etc., without recognizing how much is lost. The authors believe under these situations almost everything in the world may be interfering with one another in a multitude of ways. This phenomenon will aggressively continue. This paper studies the problems caused by these situations and proposes a method to resolve some of the problems caused by these situations: Accumulation and Integration in Seamless Knowledge.

In this paper a dynamic model of urban pattern formation with endogenous knowledge and capital accumulation is proposed. The Alonso model is extended to include two of the most important dynamic forces for urban development—capital accumulatin and technological progress. The standard assumption of the existence of the central business district (CBD) is still accepted in this approach. It is assumed that two production sectors (industry and service) and one knowledge production sector (research institutions and university) are located at the CBD. First, a compact framework for analysing dynamic interactions of the three sectors and urban pattern formation is suggested. Then, the existence of stationary urban patterns is guaranteed and the stability conditions provided. Last, the effects of changes in government's research policy and some other parameters upon the system are examined.

Knowledge is considered to be a useful tool for a firm's competitiveness and sustainability. There is considerable evidence confirming that firm-level knowledge (FLK) accumulation provides a competitive advantage for firms, through innovation. Therefore, most knowledge-intensive firms accumulate FLK via exploitative practices to prevent deterioration of their innovation performance. This study adopts methods including expert interviews, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy set theory to analyse the FLK accumulation in firms. This study proposes that three influential factors for FLK accumulation are knowledge integration (KI), knowledge absorption (KA) and knowledge sharing (KS). This study reveals that KI is the most influential factor of a firm's FLK accumulation, and the sub-factor of “Integration Ability” plays the most critical role of KI in FLK accumulation.

In this paper a repeated game is proposed to model competition among firms, with profit maximizing resource allocation. The proposed model differs from the usual competition models because efforts that players exert are not seen as sunk costs, but they accumulate to form a stock of knowledge that has a cost-reducing effect. In modelling knowledge accumulation, we also consider the (knowledge) spillovers, that is, involuntary leakage of useful technological information. The game with n boundedly rational agents is modelled by a 2n-dimensional discrete dynamical system, whose state variables are the R&D efforts and the stock of accumulated knowledge of each firm involved in the competition. The model is characterized by some counteracting forces: Efforts are costly but can increase future profits; immediate expenditures of each firm can have cost-reducing effects in the long run, since accumulated knowledge can decrease both own costs and competitors' ones, because of spillover effects. In the case of two homogeneous firms we prove the existence of a unique equilibrium and its stability. Starting from these analytic results, numerical simulations are performed in order to study the effects induced by heterogeneities between the players on stability and transient dynamics, as well as the influence of the main parameters on the basins of attraction.

This article was an attempt to brief a new model of absorptive capacity and develop the concept of absorptive capacity which is a critical factor in applying, accumulating and linking new external knowledge to innovation. Through a comprehensive review of literature on absorptive capacity, authors ended up with the idea that the stream of new external knowledge in the waterfall model continually fosters all abilities of absorptive capacity. In addition, following knowledge spillover in each stage, abilities perform their activities. Knowledge accumulation is also another capability, which in this process, plays the role of linking absorptive capacity and innovation.

Language plays at least two roles in design. First, language serves as representations of ideas and concepts through linguistic behaviors that represent the structure of thought during the design process. Second, language also performs actions and creates states of affairs. Based on these two perspectives on language use in design, we apply the computational linguistics tools of latent semantic analysis and lexical chain analysis to characterize how design teams engage in concept formation as the accumulation of knowledge represented by lexicalized concepts. The accumulation is described in a data structure comprised by a set of links between elemental lexicalized concepts. The folding together of these two perspectives on language use in design with the information processing theories of the mind afforded by the computational linguistics tools applied creates a new means to evaluate concept formation in design teams. The method suggests that analysis at a linguistic level can characterize concept formation even where process-oriented critiques were limited in their ability to uncover a formal design method that could explain the phenomenon.

Complex problem solving is recognized as an important resource of empirical knowledge accumulation. Learners can acquire and consolidate their empirical knowledge based on practical experience in the complex problem solving. Although many studies on complex problem solving have documented the effects of problem solving on knowledge accumulation, few have addressed the detailed process of empirical knowledge accumulation in the complex problem solving. The purpose of this study is to explore the process of novices' empirical knowledge accumulation in solving complex problem. A multi-stage experiment based on a real-world engineering problem is presented in the study. By means of analysis of the difference between novice and experts, a novel concept of “inflection point” and a novel “four period novices' empirical knowledge accumulation curve” are presented, which can be used to explain the novices' empirical knowledge accumulation process in solving complex problem.

Accumulating a large number of process innovation knowledge (PIK) is the prerequisite and basis for process innovation.PIK can be gradually refined by using. Hence, how to ensure the correctness of the PIK collaborative refinement is the basic work of knowledge accumulation. This paperproposes a construction method of PIK network by the imitating of biological neural network, and arefinement methodof PIKby the imitating of neural stimulation conduction. Because the refining processes are iterative, the refinement of process innovation needsa specificeditingmechanism and control mechanism, which allow multi-userto engage in collaborative editing and protect the consistency of collaborative editing result. Using the refinement method of PIK,it is possible to convert the discrete, rough knowledge into a PIK network that can effectively solve the process problems.

In recent years, the global economy has moved away from considering capital as the main axis of the economic system and has gradually come to consider knowledge accumulation (KA) and innovation as the main driving forces of economic growth and increased productivity. Because at the same time companies chose to embrace skilled engineering manpower outsourcing (EMO), the global economy now confronts the issues of how to maintain an accumulation of knowledge within the organisation and how to manage outsourcing and external knowledge to achieve balance and maximise values. This paper reports on a research and analysis study of Taiwan's optical industry using a mathematical model of translog cost function that accomplishes EMO and KA and applying this mathematical model to the optical companies in Taiwan. This paper finds that KA and EMO influence each other; when EMO increases, the KA in the company decreases in response, and vice versa.
