In the workshop, the program codes of user-defined VBA Excel functions are presented; it is shown how these functions are used to solve typical problems of elementary physics on a computer. The textbook includes problems in kinematics, dynamics, statics, molecular kinetic theory, thermal phenomena and electrodynamics. Each chapter includes: brief information on physics; code for one or more user functions and their description; step-by-step solutions to typical problems using user functions, illustrated with drawings of dialog boxes, fragments of worksheets, etc., made using screenshots. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of secondary vocational education of the latest generation. It is intended for students of secondary vocational education institutions studying physics, but it will be useful for anyone who wants to learn how to solve problems in elementary physics at a modern level — on a computer using Excel.

The textbook corresponds to the general education programs of the general courses "Hydraulics" and "Fluid Mechanics". The basic physical properties of liquids, gases, and their mixtures, including the quantum nature of viscosity in a liquid, are described; the laws of hydrostatics, their observation in natural phenomena, and their application in engineering are described. The fundamentals of the kinematics and dynamics of an incompressible fluid are given; original examples of the application of the Bernoulli equation are given. The modes of fluid motion are supplemented by the features of the transient flow mode at high local resistances. The basics of flow similarity are shown. Laminar and turbulent modes of motion in pipes are described, and the classification of flows from a creeping current to four types of hypersonic flow around the body is given. The coefficients of nonuniformity of momentum and kinetic energy for several flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are calculated. Examples of solving problems of transient flows by hydraulic methods are given. Local hydraulic resistances, their use in measuring equipment and industry, hydraulic shock, polytropic flow of gas in the pipe and its outflow from the tank are considered. The characteristics of different types of pumps, their advantages and disadvantages, and ways of adjustment are described. A brief biography of the scientists mentioned in the textbook is given, and their contribution to the development of the theory of hydroaeromechanics is shown. The four appendices can be used as a reference to the main text, as well as a subject index. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. For students of higher educational institutions who study full-time, part-time, evening, distance learning forms of technological and mechanical specialties belonging to the group "Food Technology".

Computing pioneer and polymath John von Neumann introduced the concept of a Universal Constructor as part of his effort to develop a mathematical theory describing living organisms. A Universal Constructor is a kinematic machine able to manipulate and assemble primitive building blocks. Von Neumann showed how this hypothetical constructor, being itself composed of the same primitive blocks, could self-reproduce and evolve. Remarkably, although this model system pre-dates the discovery of the genetic code, it applies to cell molecular biology as well as man-made machines. This chapter describes some key laboratory demonstrations related to universal construction and machine self-reproduction, and discusses parallels between reproduction processes in machines and biological cells.

The topics discussed are all related to basic fluid mechanics. In these introductory notes I highlight some of the main features of fluid flows and their mathematical characterization. There is much physical intuition encapsulated in the differential equations, and one of our goals is to gain more experience (i) understanding the governing equations and various related principles of kinematics, (ii) developing intuition with approximating the equations, (iii) applying the principles to a wide range of problems, which includes (iv) being able to rationalize scaling laws and quantitative trends, often without having a detailed solution in hand. Where possible we provide examples of the ideas with ‘soft interfaces’ in mind.

Several techniques for obtaining the eigenspectrum and scattering properties of one- and two-body quantum systems are presented. More unusual topics, such as solving the Schrödinger equation in momentum space or implementing relativistic kinematics, are also addressed. A novel quantum Monte Carlo technique that leverages the similarity between path integrals and random walks is developed. An exploration of the method for simple problems is followed by a survey of methods to obtain ground state matrix elements. A review of scattering theory follows. The momentum space T-matrix formalism for scattering is introduced and an efficient numerical method for solving the relevant equations is presented. Finally, the method is extended to the coupled channel scattering problem.

Recent advances in biomechanics and biomaterials are resulting in new and potentially improved implants and procedures in trauma medicine, often with more reliance on high-tech solutions. However, some new advances have resulted in disastrous outcomes. As it takes time for these complications to surface, many patients may be subject to the new technology and resulting consequences. Studying the clinical evidence around these technologies is therefore essential, and use of appropriate surrogate measures to assess the short-term in vivo performance of an implant is important to help predict long-term clinical outcome. Radiostereometric analysis and kinematic assessment are two such tools widely used in translational research and post-market surveillance in the field of joint replacement. It is only with high-quality research and awareness that true advances can be demonstrated and failures averted at the earliest stage. The principles of orthopaedics must remain to alleviate pain, correct deformity, and restore function, whatever technique is used.

From a dynamical systems perspective, coordination of human movement emerges from the intrinsic self-organizing properties of the dynamical system consisting of the individual, the task, and the environment. The movement pattern that emerges depends upon the state of the system components which impose constraints on the types of movement that may emerge. These constraints arise from the anthropometry and functional ability of the individual (individual constraints), the requirements of the task (task constraints), and the prevailing environmental conditions (environmental constraints). Abnormal movement due to cerebral palsy, disease, or injury is likely to be due to abnormal individual constraints in the form of abnormal energy resources. Therapy directed at normalizing the abnormal energy resources is likely to be more effective than therapy directed at normalizing the abnormal kinematics.

It is familiar from speech act theory how saying so can make it so. When the C.E.O. declares that no more overtime will be approved, for example, the C.E.O. thereby enacts a new company policy; her words effect an immediate change to the norms and policies operative in that company. Clearly, speech can enact facts about what is permissible and the familiar way for speech to do this is via an exercise of speaker authority. In this essay, though, I argue for a different way that speech enacts permissibility facts. Starting in the kinematics (i.e. the mechanics) of conversation, I first argue that conversational contributions routinely enact norms for the very conversation to which they contribute. I then argue that this phenomenon generalizes in a way that illuminates the crucial role of speech in enacting and perpetuating social hierarchy.

Assertion is here approached as a social practice developed through cultural evolution. This perspective will facilitate inquiry into questions concerning what role assertion plays in communicative life, what norms it is subject to, and whether every viable linguistic community must have a practice of assertion. The author’s evolutionary perspective will further enable us to ask how assertion relates to other communicative practices such as conversational implicature, indirect speech acts, presupposition, and, more broadly, the kinematics of conversation. It will also motivate a resolution of debates between conventionalist and intentionalist approaches to this speech act by explaining how those who make assertions can embody their intentions to perform an act of a certain kind. The chapter closes with a discussion of how assertoric practice can be compromised by patterns of malfeasance on the part of a speaker and by injustice within her milieu.
