Scribes in early modern South Asia relied on their skill in writing to secure the support of powerful courtly patrons. The rapid expansion of emerging regional states in the eighteenth century created new opportunities to apply these skills to administration, land-holding, and politics. This article examines the changing professional identity of the Kayastha scribal household in eighteenth-century western India. I focus on the ascendancy of the Chitnis household of Satara in the context of the growth and diversification of Kayastha employment under the Maratha sovereign Shahu Bhonsle (1682–1749). By consolidating portfolios of titles, appointments, and rights to property, ambitious scribes and secretaries, as epitomised by the career of Govind Khanderao Chitnis (d. 1785), were able to pursue riskier and more lucrative political assignments and form networks of kinsmen and associates across Maratha governments. Yet greater scrutiny and competition for state largesse, not least from within the Chitnis household itself, forced members of later generations to adopt creative and sometimes risky strategies to defend their claims to property. This article explores how the profound dislocations of political transformation in eighteenth-century South Asia enabled distinctive modes of individual and collective self-fashioning amongst skilled, upwardly mobile groups.

AbstractThis paper argues that our understanding of the transition to colonialism in South Asia can be enriched by examining the formation of revenue collection systems in north India between 1750 and 1850. It examines agrarian revenue systems not through the prism of legalism or landholding patterns, but by looking at the paper and record-based mechanisms by which wealth was actually extracted from India's hinterlands. It also examines the Kayastha pensmen who became an exponentially significant component of an Indo-Muslim revenue administration. They assisted the extension of Mughal revenue collection capabilities as qanungos (registrars) and patwaris (accountants). The intensity of revenue assessment, extraction and collection had increased by the mid 1700s, through the extension of cultivation and assessment by regional Indian kingdoms. The East India Company, in its agrarian revenue settlements in north India, utilized this extant revenue culture to push through savage revenue demands. These Kayastha pensmen thus furnished the ‘young’ Company with the crucial skills, physical records, and legitimacy to garner the agrarian wealth which would fund Britain's Indian empire. These more regular patterns of paper-oriented administration engendered a process of ‘bureaucratization’ and the emergence of the modern colonial state.

In this paper, we describe a new tardigrade species, Richtersius tertius sp. n., from Greece. The description is based on morphological and morphometric analysis using light and scanning electron microscopy as well as genetic analysis based on four molecular markers (DNA sequences of three nuclear, i.e., 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS-2 and one mitochondrial COI fragment). Morphological and morphometric differences, together with genetic comparisons, provide independent verifications of Richtersius tertius sp. n. as a species new to science. Phenotypically, the new taxon differs from Richtersius coronifer (Richters, 1903) and Richtersius ziemowiti Kayastha, Berdi, Miaduchowska, Gawlak, Łukasiewicz, Gołdyn, Jędrzejewski et Kaczmarek, 2020 mainly by the morphology and size of cuticular pores, present only in hatchlings (first instars), as well as some morphometric characters. The results presented herein contribute further to the recognition of the morphological variability and biodiversity within Richtersius, with Richtersius tertius sp. n. being the third species formally described within the genus.

Relationship between fertility and mortality is well known, which exists among different populations of the world. This is known as a genetic phenomenon that has been operating in all human populations. This study examines fertility and mortality differentials among the Paundra Kshatriya community living in a peri-urban setting of West Bengal, India. Altogether, 249 Paundra Kshatriya women were interviewed. A subsample was drawn from this sample, numbering 98, who have completed their reproductive span. Differential fertility is 0.3134 and differential mortality is 0.1393, whereas, index of total selection intensity is 0.4964 according to Crow’s (1958) formula and 0.5980 according to Johnston and Kensinger’s (1971) formula in the study population. The higher value according to Johnston and Kensinger’s (1971) formula is probably because of inclusion of embryonic deaths in the latter. Findings of the present study reveals that differential fertility (If: 0.3134) contribute more than the differential mortality (Im: 0.1393) towards the total opportunity for selection (I=0.4964) in the study population. Paundra Kshatriya is placed with other populations of West Bengal like Jale, Tili, Muslim, Kayastha, Paschtya Vaidya Brahmin, Duley Bagdi, Namasudra and Lepcha in this respect.

Health is wealth. Everybody wants a healthy life, but it is challenging to maintain a healthy life in the present era due to faulty diet habits and lifestyles. A drug is mentioned in Ayurveda designated as Mata (mother) as beneficial to health to fulfil this purpose. In the absence of a mother or when a person becomes independent to live, even in the mother's absence, Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Ritz) is sufficient to care for or maintain physical-psychological equilibrium. It has a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities associated with the biologically active compound. This drug belongs to the family Combretaceae, used extensively in the Indian system of medicine like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Tibetan and Homeopathy. Fruit is the main helpful part, named with several Sanskrit names like Abhaya, Amruta, Shiva, Pathya, Shreyasi, Kayastha and called Chebulic myrobalan in English. The detailed description of the plant, its seven varieties of fruit, medicinal uses as a single drug and in combination with different adjuvants in respect to the allotted seasons, different doses forms, various diseases condition, pharmacodynamic properties and systemic pharmacological actions, therapeutic uses, side effects and contraindications mentioned in classics are gathered here in this review article to highlight the multifaceted use and important use of this noble drug.

Abstract Global epitranscriptomic methylation of mRNA at the N6 position (m6A) is reported to be altered in B-cell and tumor development. However, the mechanistic underpinnings of its role in the pathogenesis of Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are unknown. It is well established that the B-cell receptor (BCR) pathway is a primary oncogenic driver in aggressive B-cell lymphomas. We previously reported that the Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM)/Hu Antigen R (HuR)axis, as well as Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 4A (eIF4A), modulate BCR signaling. However, the impact of RNA modifications on BCR induction is still poorly understood. Addressing this burgeoning question, we noted enhanced expression of AlkB Homolog 5 (ALKBH5), an m6A demethylase, in naïve B-cells treated with BCR mimetics. Similarly, mRNA levels of ALKBH5 were reported to be modestly enhanced in IgM-treated human B-cells (GSE156195). Consistently, immunization of C57BL/6 mice with sheep red blood cells (SRBC) significantly enhanced ALKBH5 in splenic B-cells. Next, evaluating the impact of BCR induction in lymphomagenesis, we observed a robust increase in the demethylase expression in BCR mimetic-treated DLBCL cells. Notably, increased expression of ALKBH5 was observed in a murine EµMyc model and primary DLBCL tumors. In coherence, the enhanced transcript levels of ALKBH5 in TCGA-DLBCL have prognostic implications. To gain functional insight, we depleted ALKBH5, which resulted in a robust reduction of BCR pathway proteins. Unexpectedly, the mRNA levels of CD79a and BLK were minimally modified, while the SYK, BTK, and CARD11 messages were reduced. Further studies are ongoing to evaluate the potential mechanism of mRNA transport and/or stability. Citation Format: Bandish B. Abstract Ubiquitin-mediated events are emerging as the gatekeeper in cell proliferation, and the recognition of deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) as the critical regulators of these processes is rapidly growing. Several studies in the last decade confirmed that the USP11 (Ubiquitin-Specific proteases 11) had promoted tumor growth and metastasis. Indeed, pan-cancer data analysis reveals enhanced expression of USP11 in numerous malignancies, including lymphoma. Our lab has established that USP11 deubiquitinates and stabilizes the translation initiation factor eIF4B (Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 4B) to promote eIF4B-dependent oncogenic translation and to facilitate the proliferation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Brody and colleagues screened 2000 FDA- approved compounds and reported that the anti-neoplastic agent mitoxantrone is an effective non-specific inhibitor of USP11, which was later observed to target USP15. Thus, catalytically targeting USP11 provides substantial challenges as it encompasses high homology with the functional orthologs USP4 and USP15. Addressing this major limitation, Spiliotopoulos et al. identified a unique USP11-specific allosteric site without impeding USP15 and USP4 activities. Utilizing this platform, we performed a virtual screening of more than 10 million compounds from publicly available databases and identified 307 potential unique hits. The chemical library of these hits was assessed using an in-house optimized in-cell high throughput screening assay. The primary screening revealed that 16 of the hit compounds with EC50 less than 10μM. The two most potent, structurally different, USP11 inhibitors, RBF4 and RBF11, were further evaluated. In-vitro deubiquitinase activity assay of USP11 showed minimal inhibition on treatment with compounds (as we are targeting an allosteric site), which indicates that RBF4 and 11 do not bind to the catalytic domain. Thermal shift assays revealed that RBF4 preferentially stabilizes USP11 compared to other functional paralogues USP4 and USP15, which validates the selective USP11-RBF4 interaction. Further, treatment with RBF4 and 11 hampered DLBCL proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Significantly, treatment with selected compounds depleted USP11-dependent oncogenic expression and, thus, the colony-forming capacity of DLBCL. These results show that these novel compounds can serve as an ideal tool to increase our understanding of USP11 biology and may emerge as an example of potent and selective USP11 inhibitors. Currently, we are evaluating their anti-cancer potency in pre-clinical models. Berdasarkan pengamatan megaskopis dan pola diagram laba-laba UTJ, material pembentukan Formasi Kayasa sangat mungkin berasal dari lempeng samudera.ABSTRACTThe complexity of rock formation on Halmahera Island is influenced by convergences of at least three main plates and is located in the active collision of two arcs. The Kayasa Formation is one of four volcanic rock units on Halmahera Island. Petrographic analysis, rare elements, and rare earth elements (REE) are applied in studying the rock emplacement process and the material source of Kayasa Formation. Bipolar microscopy is utilized in petrographic studies while Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry is used for measuring the trace and rare earth elements compositions in seven fresh samples and four altered/weathered rocks in Kayasa Formation’s domain. The fresh samples are classified as andesite-basalt based on quartz, K-feldspar, and plagioclase modal composition. Plagioclase fractional crystallization is thought to play an important role in the crystallization of Kayasa Formations. Fresh rocks in this study tend to crystallize under oxidative conditions in the marine environment, whilst altered or weathered ones formed in a reductive environment above sea level. Based on megascopic observations and REE patterns, the material of Kayasa Formation is very likely derived from the ocean plate.

Color is of great importance in our India, without color, there is no basis for any object, person, color really tells us the nature of each other. The color or color refers to the color of the substance, red, yellow, blue. Depending on the combination of these, several distinctions of varna can be made. India is a religious country with different beliefs. Manuscripts have a special relationship with religion. Manuscripts are the best means of salvation for our teachers. One of them is the illustrated Jain manuscript Adipuran. The manuscript, which has been composed by Acharya Pushpadanta, depicts the life history of Lord Rishabhdev (the first Tirthankara) through paintings. The presented manuscript is stored in the scripture store of Terapanthiyan, the Digambar Jain big temple of Jaipur. Its clerical 1597 (AD 1540) is Falgun Shukla 13. Its writing work was done by a Brahmin man named Vishnudas and the paintings are made by Harinath Kayastha and his family. This 687-page manuscript has 541 colored illustrations corresponding to the biography of Tirthankara Rishabhdev. Mainly in the picture, the mineral color (made from a mixture of vegetable juices, ie the color made from the bark of clay stone trees, etc.) is the most used. Mainly ocher (red) Hironji (green) Ramaraj (yellow) ink (black) color is mainly used. The four colors used in the manuscript are symbols of Jainism, such as the red color (ocher) represents our inner vision, that is, the Siddha Parmeshti used in Jainism. Those who have attained salvation. Yellow color activates our mind. Green color gives peace. It helps in self-realization. Blue color is absorbent and does not allow the outside effect to go inside. Black color was used for writing in manuscripts. The ink for writing work was made with three methods.

There are an estimated 45 million carriers of β-thalassemia trait and about 12,000-15,000 infants with β-thalassemia major are born every year in India. The consanguinity rates are higher in India, and thalassemia major constitutes a significant burden on the health care system. In present study, β-thalassemia mutations were characterized in 300 thalassemia cases from 2007 to 2010 using ARMS-PCR and DNA sequencing. The five most common mutations accounted 79.3% of the studied chromosomes that includes IVS1-5(G>C), Cod 41-42(-TCTT), Cod8-9(+G), Cod16(-C) and 619bp del. Though IVS1-5(G>C) is most common mutation when all the communities were included, the percentage prevalence were calculated on sub caste basis and found that IVS1-5(G>C) percentage prevalence varied from 25 to 60 in Aroras & Khatris and Thakur respectively. Interestingly Cod41-42(-TCTT) mutation which is the second commonest among the mutations reported was totally absent in Kayasthas and Muslim community. These findings have implications for providing molecular diagnosis, genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis to high risk couples of β-thalassemia.

In the criticism of the novel Titas Ekti Nadir Naam (1956), Mallabarman’s widely read Bengali novel, the life-narratives of the Malos, a Bengali low-caste fisherfolk community, their unique culture, their indomitable fight to survive economically, their fight to save the Malo culture in the face of all kinds of adversary forces have been discussed to a considerable extent. In the criticism of the Ritwik Ghatak’s eponymous 1973 film adaptation of the novel, the major importance has been given to Ghatak’s treatment of the struggling life of the Malo community in a rural set up and Ghatak’s mastery as a director. Less attention has been given to the caste question which determines the social position of the Malos in various ways. In examining both novel and the film text, this paper shows that whereas how caste operates in the Malo life-world and how the system of caste determines the low-caste Malos’ social position vis-à-vis the Brahmins and the Kayasthas, their high-caste counterparts are substantively dealt with in Mallabarman’s novel, Ghatak puts more focus on the human catastrophe faced by the Malos both as individual and as a community in his film, and has attempted to document the Malo life-world, as the acclaimed filmmaker Mani Kaul argues, as a civilization. This paper is concerned with this factor of caste, the catastrophe of the Malo community, and the Malo life-world as a civilization.

The classical Ayurvedic texts are endowed with unique treatment modalities. Panchakarma procedures form an important backbone in Ayurvedic treatment. One of the Panchakarma therapies is the Sarvangadhara. It is also known as Kayaseka, Pizhichil, Seka and Dhara. It is classified under Sagni Sweda as Parisheka Swedana by Acharya Charaka whereas Acharya Sushruta mentions it under Drava Sweda. It is a special Bahir-Parimarjana therapy where it does both Snehana and Swedana simultaneously. In this procedure medicated liquid (oil/Kwa- tha/Takra) is poured over the body in form of Dhara or stream for a stipulated period. The present study aims to review the procedure of Sarvangadhara through the study of various Ayurvedic and modern literature, published research papers, and textbooks. The procedure induces sweating and relieves stiffness, heaviness and coldness in the body. It is very helpful in Vata-Pradhana diseases like neurological diseases and degenerative disorders. Par- isheka Swedana is mentioned as Samanya-Chikitsa of Vata-Vyadhi. It is widely practised in Ankylosing spondylosis and the chronic stage of osteoarthritis condition. The medicines are changed based on the conditions like Takra- Dhara is adopted in cases of psoriasis and Dhanyamla-Dhara in obesity. In the present article, an attempt has been made to review the procedure and benefits of Sarvangadhara as a Pan- chakarma therapy in the treatment of various diseases. Paramacrobiotus bengalensis sp. nov. was discovered in a moss sample collected from a tree in West Bengal, India. We describe this new species using detailed morphological and morphometric data obtained from phase contrast microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, along with molecular and phylogenetic data analyses. Due to the presence of a cap-like structure at the distal portion of egg processes, the new species showed the highest similarity with Paramacrobiotus garynahi (Kaczmarek, Michalczyk & Diduszko, 2005), Paramacrobiotus alekseevi (Tumanov, 2005), Paramacrobiotus filipi Dudziak, Stec & Michalczyk, 2020, Paramacrobiotus sagani Daza, Caicedo, Lisi & Quiroga, 2017, Paramacrobiotus vanescens (Pilato, Binda & Catanzaro, 1991) and Paramacrobiotus gadabouti Kayastha, Stec, Mioduchowska & Kaczmarek, 2023. However, it can be differentiated from them by some morphological and morphometric characteristics. The genetic data corroborated our phenotypic outcome further supporting the new species hypothesis.

Swami Vivekananda is one of those who are especially notable in the field of eco-social, religious and history. He was born in a generous aristocratic “Kayastha” family in North Kolkata. From childhood Vivekananda was very gentle. He easily realizes the circumstances of dependent India. He gets the impression of India and its dignity in the history of mankind; the causes for that position and also whether it is necessary to change – where to start and what is the way. The main streams to culture history in India are – analyzing the relevant objects in traditional way, imperialist attitude, nationalist policy and recently the culture of lower classes history that begins in 1970s. The historians named Ranjit Guha, Partha Chatterjee, Gautam Bhadra, Gayatri Chatterjee, Dipesh Chaterjee et al are notable to initiate this kind of method. It is notable that the method is not very ancient. But Swami Vivekananda was enough to be the greatest in …….lower classes’ history in his own time. And it is no doubt that the method is popular and significant. It is my little effort to focus on Vivekananda’s thought for the development of backward classes. My effort is based on Vivekananda’s “speech”, writings, books, and letters and so on.</em></p></div>

Abstract This article explores how colonial law in India interacted with the construction of caste rank (varna) between 1860 and 1930. It specifically tracks contestations over Kayasthas’ legal varna rank in northern and eastern India through various inheritance disputes, threading them together to shed light on how courts sought to anchor their interpretations of Hindu law around the Indian jurisprudential conceptions of varna. It examines the successes and failures of Kayasthas to have favorable legal rulings that would uphold their status as “twice-born”/dvija, demonstrating that colonial law was limited in its ability (and often indifferent) to construct caste ranks. Inconsistent ruling in provincial courts pushed Kayasthas to seek taxonomic recognition as “twice-born” in the colonial census, demonstrating how colonial law and taxonomy intersected in novel ways. This article argues that by taking a novel approach to Indian social history through the prism of law, we can enrich our understanding of how modern notions of caste and social rank were constructed in colonial India.

Man has always feared two things death and disease. Stroke is a disease which appears suddenly with strong pathophysiology. It is responsible for more dependency than any other disease since it hampers the functional ability of person sometimes it may even lead to death. As birds need both wings to maintain posture, co-ordination of movements, execution of different movements similarly humans need both halves. If a bird loses its one wing it is unable to fly and even live due to depraved morbidity. In the same way when person suffers from stroke he is a like bird with clipped wings. Pakshaghata is a Vatavyadhi. Acharyas have established it under Astamahagada. In all types of Vatavyadhi, Snehana and Swedana are mentioned as a line of treatment. Acharya Charaka advocates the use of Ushnaveerya Parisheka in the mitigation of Vata Dosha. Induction of Swedana by unique procedure of pouring liquid by warm medicated oil on body is known as Parisheka Sweda. When it is performed on whole body along with the Abhyanga, is known as Kayaseka.
