The cultivation of ‘cultural literacy’ in students from multicultural backgrounds may occur outside schooling practices in the US due to curricular framing and a lack of interest in integrating cultural education at schools. ‘Cultural literacy’ warrants student participation and requires a conducive learning environment where multiethnic students can seek inspiration through exploration. The San Antonio Writing Project organizes literacy project called the Kahani Project, and it fosters creativeness and facilitates authentic expression of cultural funds of knowledge of Indian American students. Performing arts including dance and music engage Indian students and enable them to learn about their culture, heritage, and religion. The Kahani Project is culturally contextualized writing activity, where Asian Indian American students write about their generational practices that may not addressed in schools in the US. This qualitative study explores two narratives written for the Kahani Project. The study utilized Leiblich et al., holistic content analysis to arrive at themes, categories, and meta categories. The findings revealed Indian students’ willingness to preserve their culture through writing about Indian dance and music. The second inference of this study was that Indian students’ heritage is neglected and excluded in US curriculum.

ObjectiveThis study aims to measure the prevalence of mental health disorders in low-resource settings through telepsychiatry and evaluate data from Pakistan’s Sehat Kahani nurse-assisted online clinics serving low-income communities. This will help to understand the magnitude and nature of the demand for contextual therapies to promote mental health. The paper will discuss the challenges faced in these settings, such as limited access to mental health facilities, stigma and opportunities telemedicine brings.DesignAn observational cross-sectional study of telepsychiatry consultations using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 to screen for depression and anxiety was conducted between October and December 2022.SettingThis research was conducted at Dadar Mansehra e-health clinics of Sehat Kahani with telepsychiatry services in Pakistan.ParticipantsThe study included 2660 participants who visited Sehat Kahani e-health clinics between October and December 2022 and voluntarily completed the questionnaire for data collection.ResultsThe study was comprised of 2660 participants with a mean age of 34.3 years. The study findings show that the majority of participants were females (98.4%), 16.9% of participants had moderate depression, and 20.8% had severe depression. Furthermore, the participants who were widowed/divorced were more likely to have depression than those who were single (OR=3.3, 95% CI (2.0 to 5.2)).ConclusionsBased on the findings, most study participants were female, and their mental health was negatively impacted. Women in Pakistan are disproportionately affected by the rising rates of depression and anxiety, and telepsychiatry therapies effectively respond to this growing need. Potentially, it is a game-changer for dealing with mental health problems. Telepsychiatry can help policymakers and mental health professionals to develop effective low-income mental health initiatives.

It may also be taken as an analogy regarding the significance of retaining moderation and equilibrium in one's life. Amitabh firmly believes in the existentialist perspective that acknowledges life's transience and fleetingness. The conventional ways of thinking and doing are unable to grasp the complexity of human existence. Both of these ideas are congruent with a sense of uncertainty about the nature of human life and the connection between people and the wider environment in which they live. After World War II, the fragmented world was forced to re-evaluate human existence and look for meaning and purpose in life. Amitabh Bhattacharya's ‘Kahani’ (the story), a contemporary song, prompts its listeners to discover the authenticity of life.

In June 2003, symptoms of stunting and leaf curling resembling symptoms of tomato leaf curl disease, as well as reductions in yields, were observed on tomato plants in the western (Combani and Kahani) and eastern (Dembeni, Kaoueni, and Tsararano) regions of Mayotte, a French island in the Comoros Archipelago located in the northern part of the Mozambique Channel. The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), was observed colonizing tomato plants and other vegetable crops at low levels. Overall, 13 leaf samples with symptoms were collected from tomato plants among the five regions and tested for the presence of begomoviruses using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with two sets of degenerate primers designed to amplify two regions of the A component of begomoviruses. Primers MP16 and MP82 amplify an approximately 500-bp fragment located between the intergenic conserved nonanucleotide sequence and the first 200 bp of the coat protein (CP) gene (2). Primers AV494 and AC1048 amplify the approximately 550-bp core region of the CP gene (3). Six leaf samples, one from Combani, three from Dembeni, and two from Kahani, gave a PCR product of the expected size with both sets of primers. No PCR products were obtained with degenerate primers designed for begomovirus DNA B or β. The approximately 500- and 550-bp PCR products from one sample each of Combani (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ620912 and AJ620915, respectively), Dembeni (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ620911 and AJ620914, respectively), and Kahani (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ620913 and AJ620916, respectively) were sequenced. For the 489-bp sequences obtained with the MP16/MP82 primer set, the three isolates had 90 to 95% nucleotide identity (DNAMAN; Lynnon BioSoft, Quebec). The most significant sequence alignments (NCBI and BLAST) were with begomoviruses; 80 to 83% nucleotide identity was obtained with the Tomato yellow leaf curl Morondava virus (TYLCMV) isolates from Madagascar (EMBL Accession Nos. AJ422123 and AJ422124), 80 to 82% nucleotide identity was obtained with the South African cassava mosaic virus (SACMV) isolates (GenBank and EMBL Accession Nos. AF155806 and AJ422132), and 79 to 81% nucleotide identity was obtained with the East African cassava mosaic Malawi virus (EMBL Accession No. AJ006460). For the 522-bp sequences obtained with the AV494/AC1048 primer set, 95 to 97% nucleotide identity was shown between the three isolates. The most significant sequence alignments were also with begomoviruses; TYLCMV isolate Morondava (EMBL Accession No. AJ422125) with 86 to 88% nucleotide identity, Tomato yellow leaf curl virus isolates (GenBank and EMBL Accession Nos. AF105975, AJ489258, AB014346, AF024715, AF071228, and X76319) with 86 to 87% nucleotide identity, and SACMV isolate M12 (EMBL Accession No. AJ422132) with 85 to 86% nucleotide identity. According to the current taxonomic criteria for the provisional classification of a new begomovirus species, nucleotide sequence identity in the core region of the CP <90% (1), the tomato begomovirus from Mayotte is a new species and is provisionally named Tomato leaf curl Mayotte virus. Biological and molecular properties of Tomato leaf curl Madagascar virus isolates from Morondova and Toliary (ToLCMGV-[Tol], -[Mor]), Tomato leaf curl Mayotte virus isolates from Dembeni and Kahani (ToLCYTV-[Dem], -[Kah]) and a Tomato yellow leaf curl virus isolate from Réunion (TYLCV-Mld[RE]) were determined. Full-length DNA components of the five isolates from Madagascar, Mayotte and Réunion were cloned and sequenced and, with the exception of ToLCMGV-[Tol], were shown to be both infectious in tomato and transmissible by Bemisia tabaci. Sequence analysis revealed that these viruses had genome organizations of monopartite begomoviruses and that both ToLCMGV and ToLCYTV belong to the African begomoviruses but represent a distinct monophyletic group that we have tentatively named the South West islands of the Indian Ocean (SWIO). All of the SWIO isolates examined were apparently complex recombinants. None of the sequences within the recombinant regions closely resembled that of any known non-SWIO begomovirus, suggesting an isolation of these virus populations.

Three distinct tomato-infecting begomoviruses have been identified from Indonesia (GenBank Accessions Nos. AB100304, AB100305, and DQ083765). Severe yellow leaf curl epidemics have been observed on tomato on Java Island since the late 1990s. Viral DNA was extracted (2) from one such sample collected in Lembang, West Java in 1998. Polymerase chain reaction with previously described primers was used to detect the presence of geminiviral DNA-A (4), DNA-B (3), and associated satellite DNA (1). The predicted 1.4-kb DNA-A fragment was amplified with the general primer pair PAL1v1978/PAR1c715 and then cloned and sequenced. DNA-B and satellite DNA were not detected in the sample. On the basis of the partial DNA-A sequences, specific primers were designed to amplify and sequence the complete DNA-A component (2,762 nucleotides, GenBank Accession No. AF189018). The DNA-A sequence contained the geminivirus-conserved nanosequence TAATATTAC in the loop of the hairpin structure of the intergenic region and six open reading frames including two in the virus sense and four in the complementary sense. Pairwise comparison of the full-length DNA-A sequence with those of other begomoviruses available in the GenBank database was done by the MegAlign software (DNASTAR, Inc, Madison, WI). Highest nucleotide sequence identity (74.1%) was with Tomato leaf curl Mayotte virus-[Kahani] (GenBank Accession No. AJ865340). Comparison of the full-length DNA-A sequence with the three above mentioned tomato-infecting begomoviruses from Indonesia also showed less than 71% nucleotide sequence identities. Because the DNA-A sequence had less than 89% identity with other begomoviruses, it should be classified as a distinct virus according to the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The name Tomato yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus-[Lembang] (TYLCIDV-[Lem]) is proposed. The presence of at least four distinct tomato-infecting begeminiviruses on Java Island needs to be considered when developing tomato cultivars with stable resistance to tomato (yellow) leaf curl disease.
This thesis contributes to examining how and why coal continues to dominate global energy mix despite old and new socio-ecological concerns and how and why is it contested, using environment and climate justice narratives. Although coal continues to reign in the global energy mix, the patterns of global coal trade are shifting. India is primed to play a leading role in the near future as coal production, consumption and trade encompasses new geographies in the Global South. At the same time, India is also leading the transition towards renewables globally. I first explore this paradox by looking at social metabolic patterns and political ecological factors and argue that the energy transition is in-fact towards more coal despite a renewables-led rhetoric. I then explore how this is being facilitated with the creation of a new coastal geography, in parallel to the older coal geographies. This is followed by an exploration of how this rise in coal is being contested, and how are the protests being shaped in regions with marginalized populations with pre-existing inequalities. I argue for the need of decolonial environmental justice scholarship to unpack how the multiple forms of violence interact and perpetuate environmental injustices by what I term procedural violence. Finally, I examine the multiple ways in which coal protests from across the world which employ a climate justice narrative are connected. I explore 61 cases of resistance and draw three broad types of classifications about the connections. I argue for the need of decolonial climate justice movements which adheres to local concerns and doesn’t push for a global top-down narrative, by providing two examples from India where such approach does more harm than good to a movement. The thesis is based on a mixed-methods approach, focusing on transdisciplinary, co-produced research, and mobilizes concepts from the three interconnected disciplines of political ecology, environmental justice and ecological economics.

This chapter focuses on a community literacy project called the “Kahani” project, an approach to teaching diasporic Asian Indian American (AIA) children to write about and preserve their Indigenous (i.e., ethnic) Knowledge (Battiste & Youngblood, 2000). Language Arts curriculum in the US is predominantly Ameri-centric and limiting to children from minoritized communities, who come from complex and rich cultural backgrounds. The inclusive education questions the curriculum in schools for people from the non-mainstream communities. Educators who teach ‘other people's children' (Delpit, 1990) have to be accountable to disrupt the established non-inclusive official pedagogical practices, especially in Language Arts. The Kahani Literacy project model hypothesizes that communal/collective writing is beneficial. Educators must create supportive learning opportunities for diasporic writers to engage in writing about their lived experiences and world view in a shared and social setting through dialogic conferencing.

Abstract The female hero in Bollywood has emerged as a response to the clamour for meaningful representation of women in cinema. Either a nurturing or destructive force, she draws on the mythological Durga and Kali—the two faces Shakti. Women heroes drive the action and narrative. Kahani (2012) and NH10 (2015) pivot on the journeys of women in search of revenge and justice, who much like the archetypical hero, enter unknown and dangerous terrains. Vidya (Kahani, 2012) acts alone to resolve the mystery of her husband’s disappearance. Meera (Anushka Sharma, NH10, 2015) is an urban professional who confronts entrenched patriarchal forces at Delhi’s borders. Heroes can be seemingly ordinary women who overcome hurdles—societal and personal. Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak (2020) based on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal celebrates her transformation from victim to compassionate activist. Domestic worker Chanda’s dream is to end the cycle of poverty by enabling her daughter to become a district collector (Swara Bhaskar, Nil Battey Sannata, 2015). Secret Superstar (2017) celebrates the mutually empowering bond between the 15-year-old Insia (Zaira Wasim) and her mother who battle the everyday ugliness of patriarchy within the home to liberate themselves. Biopics celebrate the lives of women in male dominated sports (Dangal, 2016; Mary Kom, 2014). Neerja (2016) and Raazi (2018) are about real-life heroes in previously male territory—situations that are dangerous to people and the state itself. Bollywood sheroes exemplify the idea of the hero as a gender-neutral being—someone who fights for the greater good and succeeds.

This report takes stock of the current climate finance landscape in India, along with the estimated financing requirements, enabling conditions and macro policy instruments to achieve national 1.5oC and 2oC goals. Climate change will negatively affect India’s economy leading to annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) loss of 3 per cent to 10 per cent by 2100 (Kompas et al., 2018; RBI, 2023). In a business-as-usual scenario, India is estimated to face GDP per capita loss of 2.6 per cent, 6.7 per cent and 16.9 per cent in 2030, 2050, and 2100 respectively (Kahn, 2019).
