Reports excavations in areas thought to encompass the donjon and hall respectively. Traces of an early curtain wall predating the north tower were found. At ground level, two window embrasures were revealed in the east wall of the building and, on its south side, a doorway into a passage linking with the east range. In the late seventeenth or eighteenth century the passage was blocked and a fireplace inserted into the north gable of the east range, which was occupied at least until the late eighteenth century. The response of segmental filtration coefficients ( K f) to high peak inflation pressure (PIP) injury was determined in isolated perfused rat lungs. Total ( K f,t), arterial ( K f,a), and venous ( K f,v) filtration coefficients were measured under baseline conditions and after ventilation with 40–45 cmH2O PIP. K f,a and K f,v were measured under zone I conditions by increasing airway pressure to 25–27 cmH2O. The microvascular segment K f ( K f,mv) was then calculated by: K f,mv = K f,t − K f,a − K f,v. The baseline K f,twas 0.090 ± 0.022 ml · min−1 · cmH2O−1 · 100 g−1 and segmentally distributed 18% arterial, 41% venous, and 41% microvascular. After high PIP injury, K f,t increased by 680%, whereas K f,a, K f,v, and K f,mv increased by 398, 589, and 975%, respectively. Pretreatment with 50 μM gadolinium chloride prevented the high PIP-induced increase in K f in all vascular segments. These data imply a lower hydraulic conductance for microvascular endothelium due to its large surface area and a gadolinium-sensitive high-PIP injury, produced in both alveolar and extra-alveolar vessel segments.

Math. 196 (2014), 589–650] and Zhang [On the local-global principle for integral Apollonian 3-circle packings, J. Reine Angew. Math. 737, (2018), 71–110], proving an almost local-to-global property for the curvatures of certain circle packings, to a large class of Kleinian groups. Specifically, we associate in a natural way an infinite family of integral packings of circles to any Kleinian group ${\mathcal{A}}\leqslant \text{PSL}_{2}(K)$ satisfying certain conditions, where $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field, and show that the curvatures of the circles in any such packing satisfy an almost local-to-global principle. A key ingredient in the proof is that ${\mathcal{A}}$ possesses a spectral gap property, which we prove for any infinite-covolume, geometrically finite, Zariski dense Kleinian group in $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}({\mathcal{O}}_{K})$ containing a Zariski dense subgroup of $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$.

We utilized a mixed-methods design to understand how a national sample of 589 school counselors adapted their approach to address K–12 students’ academic, social/emotional, and career development during the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, we examined how COVID-19–induced disparities influenced school counselors’ delivery of services. We identified six themes using thematic analysis and conducted a t test to further understand what services and strategies counselors were actively using 6 months after the onset of COVID-19. Our findings suggest that school counselors continued to adjust their comprehensive school counseling programs to address pandemic-induced disparities.

A 42-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room complaining of fever and headache. His cerebrospinal fluid showed a cloudy appearance, and his white blood cell count was elevated at 2460/mm3, with a predominance of neutrophils (81%), and abnormal protein and glucose levels (510.7 mg/dL and 5 mg/dL, respectively). A lobulated lesion with rim enhancement, suggestive of abscess, was detected through magnetic resonance imaging. Klebsiella pneumoniae was detected in nasopharyngeal swab and blood cultures. The capsular serotype of K. pneumoniae was K2 and the sequence type determined by multilocus sequence typing was 23. The hypervirulent phenotype was associated with multiple virulent genes, including rmpA, rmpA2, entB, ybtS, kfu, iucA, iutA, iroB mrkD, allS, peg-344, peg-589, and peg-1631. After six weeks of receiving appropriate antibiotics and exhibiting clinical resolution of the brain abscesses, the patient was discharged. We present the first reported case of a healthy community-dwelling adult with solitary brain abscesses, and no other invasive abscesses, related to hypervirulent K. pneumoniae.

AbstractElectron probe microanalyses of zoisites from high-grade metamorphic rocks in Galicia, NW Spain have been obtained. The elements Na, Mg, P, K, Ti, and Mn were not detected above the 0.1 wt. % level. Assuming all Fe is present as Fe3+, a clear relation is obtained between the Fe content and the optic axial angle. Zoisite with 1.6 wt. % Fe2O3 proves to be uniaxial at 589 nm; uniaxiality in blue light (470 nm) lies at 1.5 wt. % Fe2O3. A change of the optic sign, from positive to negative, is obtained at 2.9 wt. % Fe2O3. The presence of minor elements greatly affects this relation, as is indicated by analyses of sector-zoned Sr-bearing zoisites of a muscovite-zoisite pegmatite from the same region. Under retrograde conditions Fe-rich α-zoisite reacts to form less Fe-rich α-zoisite or β-zoisite and clinozoisite.

We proved that there cannot be any (4,4) nets in CP^2. In order to show this, we use tropical algebraic geometry. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the important composer in classical period. He had the huge influence in music history. He had wealthy and all styles of creations, although concert aria for soprano is not the famous genre, we can be aware of Mozart's favorite from his wealthy creations. This thesis focuses on the research and interpretation of five concert arias for soprano composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during the classical period: “Basta vincesti…Ah, non lascirmi, no, K.486a”.“ Non più . Tutto ascoltai…Non temer, amato bene, K.490 ”.“Ch'io mi scordi di te?…Non temer, amato bene, K. 505”.“ Alma grande e nobil core, K.578”. “ Vado, ma dove? K.583”. The thesis consists of five chapters: the introduction gives the motivation, describes the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his creative styles of the concert arias, the origin and development of concert arias for soprano, the background information, the analysis and interpretation of five concert arias for soprano. With the references and works analysis, presentation of the major subject-contribution of this thesis, and the study of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's concert arias for soprano, this thesis hopes to enhance author's presentation,strengthen teaching alility, and provide a better understanding and recognition of the work of concert arias by Mozart for future researchers.

W. A. Mozart‘s compositions for clarinet played a significant role in the music history. Many scholars took their attention to Concerto in A major for Clarinet and Orchestra. However, the importance of Clarinet Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet is unneglectable. According to the literature, the development of clarinet in the musical history is no earlier than the seventeenth century. Clarinet had a variety of sizes and tonalities in the beginning of development. Mozart composed lots of brilliant compositions for the combination with the clarinet in A. A. Stadler, a clarinetist, had excellent skill in playing clarinet. He cooperated with T. Lotz, an instrumental maker, extended the compass of basset clarinet lower to C. Inspired by Stadler and the invented instrument, Mozart wrote Clarinet Quintet, K. V. 581 and Clarinet Concerto, K. V. 622 for the basset clarinet. Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, K. V. 581 is undeniably important to the history of chamber music. Clarinet Quintet, K. V. 581 is composed in four movements. Harmony, form, texture, idiom and expression in every movement were discussed in Chapter3. The setting of clarinet and string quartet was also an innovation for the chamber music in his time. This setting of Clarinet Quintet became one of the standard settings which several composers tried to compose music for. Among the works, J. Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet, op. 115 and M. Reger’s Clarinet Quintet, op. 146 have gained the same respect as Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, K. V. 581. These works have several similarities. For example, they were all created in one or two years before the composers’ death, and the inspiration for creating the music all came from the cooperation with the outstanding performers …etc. To sum up, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, K. V. 581 is important and influential to the history of chamber music.

The treatise Ambiguum ad Iohannem 7 has been chosen as a textual base for this study. The treatise contains the most compact and systematic passage on the "motion" in Maximus' works. I have been preoccupied with the most important (crucial) themes of the above mentioned text, which were partially emphasized in contemporary research on Maximus. Nevertheless, no detailed and complex study has been writen so far. The aim of this study is to examine the motif of "motion/movement" (κίνησις) in its philosophical preconditions and implications. Therefore the study is preoccupied with (1) the context and topics in which the "motion/movement" exists in Maximus' works; (2) the way Maximus deals with the term of "motion/movement"...

Abstract Opera plays a key role in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music compositions. Mozart openly admitted his love for opera and wrote his first opera at the age of 11. He proceeded to write 22 operas throughout his life. Only after the 1780s, did Mozart finally reach artistic maturity in his music composition. During the second half of the 18th century and the reign of the Emperor Franz Joseph II, Vienna had a lively music scene whilst Italian comic opera, “Opera buffa,” was regarded as the most important form of play at the time. Mozart collaborated with Italian poet Lorenz da Ponta on 3 operas and at the same time, reflecting his view of love and relationships in Così fan tutte (the last of 3 operas). When Così fan tutte was first performed on the stage, it was considered socially unacceptable, and was criticized as “immoral,” “reveals the strongest contempt for women,” etc. Despite comments and criticisms, Mozart remained strong and focused on composing music. The motif Così fan tutte (Thus do they all) is ingeniously carved into this short playful, overture. For the playwright and composer working hand in hand on this particular piece, Mozart arranged three men singing the phrase, so that audiences could have an immediate grasp of the playwright’s actual sarcasm and humour. This not only adds to the dramatic effect, but builds a deep emotional connection to the play. Generally speaking, the music style of this opera is typical of Mozart: rhythmic wit and liveliness with a hint of melancholy and emotional suffering. The overture of this opera was the subject of this research. With an attempt to examine the music composition and dramatic implication of the music structure, we aim to gain a broad understanding and reveal different angles of this genius while showing our heartfelt respect to the 18th century - the golden age of Italian opera.

AbstractWheat is challenged by rapidly evolving pathogen populations, resulting in yield losses. Plants use innate immune systems involving the recognition of pathogen effectors and subsequent activation of defense responses to respond to pathogen infections. Understanding the genes, genetic networks, and mechanisms governing plant-pathogen interactions is key to the development of varieties with robust resistance whether through conventional breeding techniques coupled with marker selection, gene editing, or other novel strategies. With regards to plant-pathogen interactions, the most useful targets for crop improvement are the plant genes responsible for pathogen effector recognition, referred to as resistance (R) or susceptibility (S) genes, because they govern the plant’s defense response. Historically, the molecular identification of R/S genes in wheat has been extremely difficult due to the large and repetitive nature of the wheat genome. However, recent advances in gene cloning methods that exploit reduced representation sequencing methods to reduce genome complexity have greatly expedited R/S gene cloning in wheat. Such rapid cloning methods referred to as MutRenSeq, AgRenSeq, k-mer GWAS, and MutChromSeq allow the identification of candidate genes without the development and screening of high-resolution mapping populations, which is a highly laborious step often required in traditional positional cloning methods. These new cloning methods can now be coupled with a wide range of wheat genome assemblies, additional genomic resources such as TILLING populations, and advances in bioinformatics and data analysis, to revolutionize the gene cloning landscape for wheat. Today, 58 R/S genes have been identified with 42 of them having been identified in the past six years alone. Thus, wheat researchers now have the means to enhance global food security through the discovery of R/S genes, paving the way for rapid R gene deployment or S gene elimination, manipulation through gene editing, and understanding wheat-pathogen interactions at the molecular level to guard against crop losses due to pathogens.

Chapter 7 discusses Governor Ronny Musgrove, a former member of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee (JLBC), who was familiar with the budget making process. This chapter shows how Musgrove was successful in getting more funding for total education (especially K – 12) although he had a less than ideal relationship with the legislature. The constant disputes between the legislature and Musgrove resulted in the legislature overriding 47 of the 58 gubernatorial vetoes in one legislative session (2001 legislative session). Former Musgrove ally, Speaker Tim Ford, attributed the governor’s lack of fiscal success to his lack of communication with the legislature.

Elemental Na has been the tracer of choice for the generation of high altitude (mesospheric) guide stars because of its relatively large natural abundance and large absorption cross section. Dye based systems using Na are currently under development for several large aperture telescopes. However, robust solid state laser technology to generate high power narrow linewidth light at 589 nm has progressed slowly. Here we consider both the tracer and the transmitter technology and show that using either the K D1 line at 769 nm or the 372 nm line of Fe (a 5D-z 5F°) for the tracer may provide robust solutions until solid state Na transmitter technology can be more fully developed. The comparable performance is primarily due to the fact that both lines can be generated with existing solid state materials (Alexandrite, Ti:Sapphire).

Jet fuel thermal stability at high temperature is receiving increased attention recently as advanced aero engines are being pushed to high power, high pressure and temperature regimes for improved engine cycle performance and low emissions. This paper describes the rig experimental tests to assess the high fuel temperature effect on combustor emissions. A special test rig facility has been designed and set up for emission measurements with preheated fuel. The purpose of the tests is to evaluate the combustor emission characteristics under nominal and elevated fuel temperatures. The scope of the project is two fold: (1) to design, procure and establish a dedicated hot fuel deoxygenation, fuel preheat facility that can reach temperature up to 600 °F (589 K); (2) to measure combustion emissions, mainly NOx, CO and UHC, at normal and elevated fuel temperature under representative engine operating conditions. The test rig has run for extended duration and proved reliable over the whole test campaign. Measured emission results show that fuel temperature effect on NOx, CO, UHC emissions are marginal, possibly due to the low emission capability of the sector combustor that is less sensitive to fuel inlet condition changes than other combustor designs. These results indicate a manageable risk for engine development with elevated fuel temperature from the emission viewpoint.

A periodic wave structure with a vertical wave length of about 2 km between 12 and 19 km has been identified in Rayleigh lidar measurements at 589 nm of low altitude relative density profiles that were made by the University of Illinois group during the March/April Arecibo Initiative for Dynamics of the Atmosphere (AIDA) 1989 campaign effort. The equivalent temperature fluctuations are several degrees in magnitude. Also seen in one series of three successive nights were temperature fluctuations of about 10 °K at altitudes of 25 km with a vertical extent of 1 km. Both of these phenomena show a downward phase speed between 1 and 3 cm/s. The lower periodic structure is believed to be the same phenomenon seen previously in 430 MHz measurements of winds obtained at Arecibo Observatory. The identity of this structure remains uncertain. Cornish and Larsen [1989] and Sato and Woodman [1982a] considered this structure to be a quasi-inertial long period wave. Hines [1989] proposed instead the identification of this structure with a stationary wave system generated by orographic waves caused by the interaction of the sub-tropical tradewinds with the mountainous terrain of Puerto Rico. The higher altitude feature seen in the AIDA lidar observations is believed to be a manifestation of a region of clear air turbulence, which is known to occur in the lower stratosphere.

Abstract Modern military aircraft engines are designed for high thrust, low specific fuel consumption, small engine size, and high thrust-to-weight ratio. Afterburner is a thrust augmentation device that is used in all modern military aircraft engines. Afterburners are required for aircrafts to take-off from short runways with heavy payloads and to perform combat manoeuvres. Light up and flame stabilization are the key requirements for any afterburner design. From the literature review, V-gutters are known to be the best flame holding devices based on the blockage, flame spread and combustion stability criteria. For the fifth-generation aero engines, the gas temperature at the entry of the afterburner system is higher than the V-gutter material’s allowable limit. Typical turbine entry gas temperatures are of order of 1850 K and reduces to a value of 1100 K at afterburner inlet which necessitates cooling of the V-gutter structure. Uncooled or bare v-gutters are prone to oxidation and damage due to thermal fatigue. The cooling of v-gutter helps to prevent the oxidation and improve the life. In this work, various cooling design configurations for the given V-gutter have been investigated using jet impingement and film cooling techniques. This study aims to develop a cooling arrangement to reduce the average uncooled V-gutter metal temperature from 950 K to less than 750 K by using the bypass air at 3 bar pressure and 550 K temperature. The corresponding average cooling effectiveness of 0.5 is to be achieved. The design of experiments (DOE) methods used for computational studies like Monte Carlo and Montgomery to validate and analyse the designs are computationally intensive and time consuming. Hence, a parametric approach is used for optimization of cooling flow design to achieve the desired temperatures and cooling effectiveness. Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) analysis is performed on four distinct cooling configurations with different cooling hole diameters and their arrangement. The first three cooling configurations 1 to 3 do not meet the design requirement. The metal temperature of the V-gutter for cooling design configuration 4a is in the range of 699 K – 859 K with an average metal temperature of 788 K. The cooling design configuration 4b showed the best cooling performance with the V-gutter metal temperature in the range of 580 K – 840 K and an average temperature of 755 K. The corresponding cooling effectiveness achieved is 0.53 with lowest cooling air mass flow requirement is 0.45% of afterburner inlet flow. Thus, it is concluded that the V-gutter cooling configuration 4b meets the design intend.

The dissolved oxygen amount of a water body, such as a reservoir, stream, or river, is an important water quality parameter that may affect society's health directly. The daily mean dissolved oxygen of the Coosa River was investigated in this presented study. The multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) approach and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm, recently widely used for hydrological and environmental problems, was chosen for the prediction. Daily water temperature (Max, Min, and Mean), daily mean specific conductivity, daily median water pH, and discharge parameters were inputs in the MLP and KNN models. A total of 3535 daily records were implemented into the model. 2951 daily data were used as the training set, while 584 was the test set. Results were compared with each other by using statistical evaluation methods. The KNN approach was also generated by applying the same training and test sets. Based on the results, it is evident that the MLP (Multilayer Perceptron) model provided satisfactory dissolved oxygen prediction results. However, the KNN (K-Nearest Neighbors) model outperformed the MLP approach, despite having a lower correlation coefficient than the MLP.

In order to develop more energy-efficient and safer, hydrogen pre-cooling systems destined for use in hydrogen refueling stations, a metallic material must first be researched and found to possess three excellent material properties: high strength, high thermal conductivity and low susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). This study investigated the hydrogen compatibility of a beryllium-copper alloy 25 (UNS-C17200), fabricated by a solution annealing at 1053 K and via subsequent aging treatment at 588 K. After these thermal processes, the tensile strength exceeded 1200 MPa, due to the precipitation of nano-sized CuBe compounds (γ’ phase). Slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) and tension-compression fatigue tests were performed using this material, in addition to fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness tests, in laboratory air and in gaseous hydrogen with a pressure of 115 MPa at room temperature. After the SSRT test, the material showed no hydrogen-induced degradation of strength or ductility and, surprisingly, there was also no degradation of fatigue resistance or fracture toughness values in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. Specifically, it was revealed that the material demonstrated an excellent HE resistance, despite having such a high tensile strength.

A laser interferometer was used to monitor thermally induced length changes in samples of Cer-Vit 101 and 142 between discrete temperatures in the 250–450 K range. The Cer-Vit 101 was then irradiated with a γ-ray 132Cs source for 37 days, and the Cer-Vit 142 with a 60Co source for 58 days. Both samples received a radiation dose of 105 rad which caused them to become opaque.

The thermal aspects of a safety analysis for shipment of the West Valley melter are presented. The West Valley melter was used from 1996 to 2002 to vitrify regionally sourced high level radioactive waste. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) set up the West Valley Demonstration Project to encase this melter and grout it in low density cellular concrete, for disposal. DOE-West Valley requested the Savannah River National Laboratory to prepare a Safety Analysis Report. The thermal portion of the safety analysis covers Normal Conditions of Transport (NCT) and Hypothetical Accidents Conditions (HAC), as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations. For NCT, it is assumed that the encased melter is stored in either shade or direct sunlight at an ambient temperature of 311 K (100 °F). The defining HAC is exposure to a 1075 K (1475 °F) fire for 30 minutes. Finite element computer models were used to compute temperature profiles for NCT and HAC, given the thermal properties of the melter and its contents and tabulated radiolytic heating source concentrations. The resulting temperature conditions were used to estimate the pressurization due to evaporation of water from the concrete. The maximum calculated gauge pressures were determined to be 81 kPa (12 psig) for NCT and 580 kPa (84 psig) for HAC.

The distribution of pyrite and pyrrhotite is documented within an andalusite-sillimanite type (high-temperature, low-pressure) metasedimentary succession exposed in the Hyland River region of southeastern Yukon, Canada. The following metamorphic zones are recognized: chlorite, biotite, cordierite/staurolite (porphyroblast-in), andalusite, sillimanite, and K-feldspar + sillimanite. Pyrite occurs in the chlorite zone through the biotite zone, while pyrrhotite occurs from the chlorite zone to K-feldspar + sillimanite zone. The pyrite-pyrrhotite transition, therefore, occupies an interval in the chlorite and lower biotite zones that is terminated upgrade by a pyrite-out isograd in the upper part of the biotite zone or lowest grade part of the cordierite/staurolite zone. Pressure and temperature conditions of the rocks were estimated from phase equilibrium modelling and from Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material (RSCM) thermometry. Modelling indicates pressures of 3.7-4.1 kbar with temperatures of ~425 °C at the biotite isograd, 560-570 °C for chlorite-out/porphyroblast-in, ~575 °C for andalusite-in, 575-600 °C for the sillimanite isograd, and 645-660 °C at the K-feldspar + sillimanite isograd. RSCM temperatures are greater than or equal to 420 °C in the Chl zone, 500 °C at the Bt isograd, 525-550 °C for porphyroblast-in isograd, ~550 °C at the And isograd, and 580 °C at the Sil isograd. These results suggest the pyrite-pyrrhotite transition occurs from less than or equal to 420°C to ~560 °C. Thermodynamic modelling shows 0.6 wt. % H2O is released during metamorphism over the ~140 °C interval of the pyrite-pyrrhotite transition. The gradual release of fluid in the biotite zone is interpreted to have broadened the pyrite-pyrrhotite transition compared to other studies that predict a small interval of vigorous fluid release associated with volumetric chlorite consumption. Samples from the pyrite-pyrrhotite transition zone contain lower whole rock and pyrite Au values than samples from unmetamorphosed/lower rocks, suggesting that Au was removed from the rock at conditions below the pyrite-pyrrhotite transition (<420 °C). The chlorite zone and higher-grade metamorphic rocks of the Hyland River area do not appear to be a plausible source region for orogenic gold.

The Browns Hole quadrangle is in Weber and Cache Counties of northern Utah and covers the eastern part of Ogden Valley, a rapidly developing area of the Wasatch Range. The Middle and South Forks of the Ogden River bisect the quadrangle and are important watersheds and recreational areas to the communities of Ogden Valley and the Wasatch Front. The towns of Huntsville and Eden are just west of the quadrangle, unincorporated communities with year-round residents are present throughout the quadrangle, and numerous summer-cabin communities are present in the eastern part of the quadrangle. A portion of Powder Mountain ski resort, which draws year-round visitation and recreation, is present in the northwest corner of the quadrangle. The quadrangle contains the Willard thrust, a major thrust fault with approximately 30 mi (50 km) of eastward displacement that was active during the Cretaceous-Eocene Sevier orogeny (Yonkee and others, 2019). In the quadrangle, the Willard thrust places Neoproterozoic through Ordovician strata in the hanging wall over a fault-bounded lozenge of Cambrian strata and footwall Jurassic and Triassic strata (see cross section on Plate 2). Neoproterozoic strata comprise a succession of mostly clastic rocks deposited during rifting of western North America and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia (Yonkee and others, 2014). These rocks include the Cryogenian-age Perry Canyon and Maple Canyon Formations, and the Ediacaran-age Kelley Canyon Formation, Papoose Creek Formation, Caddy Canyon Quartzite, Inkom Formation, Mutual Formation, and Browns Hole Formation. The Browns Hole Formation is a sequence of interbedded volcaniclastic rock and basalt lava flows that provides the only radiometric age control in the quadrangle. Provow and others (2021) reported a ~610 Ma detrital apatite U-Pb age from volcaniclastic sandstone at the base of the formation, Crittenden and Wallace (1973) reported a 580 ± 14 Ma K-Ar hornblende age for a volcanic clast, and Verdel (2009) reported a 609 ± 25 Ma U-Pb apatite age for a basalt flow near the top of the formation. Cambrian strata in the hanging wall include a thick basal clastic sequence (Geertsen Canyon Quartzite) overlain by a thick sequence of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomite (Langston, Ute, and Blacksmith Formations). Hanging wall rocks are deformed by Willard thrust-related structures, including the Browns Hole anticline, Maple Canyon thrust, and numerous smaller folds and minor faults. Footwall rocks of the Willard thrust include highly deformed Cambrian strata within a fault-bounded lozenge exposed in the southern part of the quadrangle, and Jurassic and Triassic rocks exposed just south of the quadrangle. The Paleocene-Eocene Wasatch Formation unconformably overlies older rocks and was deposited over considerable paleotopography developed during late stages of the Sevier orogeny. The southwest part of the quadrangle is cut by a southwest-dipping normal fault system that bounds the east side of Ogden Valley. This fault is interpreted to have experienced an early phase of slip during local late Eocene to Oligocene collapse of the Sevier belt and deposition of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks (Norwood Tuff) exposed west of the quadrangle (Sorensen and Crittenden, 1979), and a younger phase of slip during Neogene Basin and Range extension (Zoback, 1983). Lacustrine deposits and shorelines of Pleistocene-age Lake Bonneville are present in the southwest corner of the quadrangle near the mouth of the South Fork of the Ogden River and record the highstand of Lake Bonneville (Oviatt, 2015). Pleistocene glacial deposits, present in the northwest corner of the map, are likely related to the Pinedale glaciation, commonly expressed by two moraine building episodes in the Wasatch Range (Quirk and others, 2020). Numerous incised alluvial deposits and geomorphic surfaces are present along major drainages and record pre- and post-Lake Bonneville aggradational and degradational alluvial and colluvial sequences. Mass-movement deposits, including historically active landslides, are present throughout the quadrangle. Crittenden (1972) mapped the Browns Hole quadrangle at 1:24,000 scale, which provided an excellent foundation for the general stratigraphy and structure, but the 1972 map lacked important details of unconsolidated surficial units. As part of 1:62,500 scale mapping of the Ogden 30'x60' quadrangle, Coogan and King (2016) updated stratigraphic nomenclature, revised some contacts, and added more details for surficial units. For this map, we utilized new techniques for data acquisition and analysis to delineate surficial deposits, bedrock contacts, and faults more accurately and precisely. Mapping and field data collection were largely done in 2021–2022 using a combination of GPS-enabled tablets equipped with georectified aerial imagery (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] National Agriculture Imagery Program [NAIP], 2009), orthoimagery (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC] State Geographic Information Database, 2018b, 2018c; 2021a, 2021b), and lidar data (UGRC State Geographic Information Database, 2006; 2011; 2013–2014; 2018a), previously published geologic maps, topographic maps, and applications for digital attitude collection. We also used hand-held GPS units, Brunton compasses, and field notebooks to collect geologic data. Field data were transferred to a Geographic Information System (GIS), where the map was compiled and completed.

The Mississippi National River and Recreation area (MISS), situated along a 116 km stretch of the Mississippi River through the Minneapolis and St. Paul urban corridor, encompasses ~21,800 ha of public and private land. In 2022, the Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (GLKN) resampled permanent forest monitoring sites in the park, marking the second assessment of these sites, which were established and initially sampled in 2011. The goal of this long-term monitoring project is to provides managers with routine updates on which to base management decisions; these data can also be used to tease apart impacts and elucidate causal agents when novel problems or situations arise. We initiated a comprehensive forest monitoring program at MISS in 2011, establishing 33 sites at that time. High water levels during our sampling window that year precluded sampling on many of our planned sites while on others, water levels had only recently subsided. Here, the full complement of herbs had not yet emerged. In 2022, we resampled existing sites and established additional locations, bringing the total to 50. Sampled and derived metrics included trees (density and basal area of live trees, seedlings, and snags (i.e., standing dead trees)), understory (herb and shrub frequency), browse (bite marks on woody species and presence and height of herbaceous species), and taxa richness. We classified sites into four broad forest types using the newer (2022) dataset, resulting in two upland types (upland rich, upland disturbed) and two floodplain types (box elder-dominated and silver maple-dominated). Because of sampling difficulties in 2011, we are only comparing tree, sapling, and snag data between years. At upland rich sites, overall tree (? 2.5 cm diameter at breast height [DBH]) density declined 22%, while that for just the small sapling component (? 2.5 cm, < 5 cm DBH) fell 41%. Species experiencing notable losses include basswood (Tilia americana L.), elm (Ulmus L.), bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis (Wangenh.) K. Koch), and red oak (Quercus rubra L.). All three resampled sites are located in Spring Lake Park Reserve and subjected to high white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimm.) browse pressure. We sampled seven sites in upland disturbed forests, where overall tree density fell 17% from 778 ? 215 trees/ha to 648 ? 72 trees/ha, largely due to declines in elm, ash (Fraxinus sp. L.), and hackberry (Celtis occidentalis L.). While changes in black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) mirrored this pattern in diameter classes above 5 cm, density of saplings increased 12-fold, largely due to a swamping effect from one site, possibly in response to buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L.) removal. In the nine box elder-dominated sites, overall tree density declined from 635 ? 47 in 2011 to 500 ? 58 trees/ha in 2022, mainly reflecting changes in box elder (Acer negundo L.), elm, and silver maple (Acer saccharinum L.). In these sites, density of large (? 30 cm DBH) snags increased from 2.5 ? 1.6 to 11.1 ? 4.4 snags/ha. In silver maple-dominated floodplain forests, tree density in the 12 sites fell from 421 ? 63 to 291 ? 23 trees/ha, with declines observed in all five dominant species. Sapling density was low in these sites, falling from 62.6 ? 36 in 2011 to 23.6 ? 11 saplings/ha in 2022. Our observations likely reflect both deer browse and alteration of the flow regime by river impoundment. At upland sites, deer browse is impeding regeneration of all major upland species: red oak, bitternut hickory, basswood, and elm. While browse is also occurring in floodplain sites, prolonged inundation may play a larger role in regeneration failure here. Saplings of silver maple, box elder, cottonwood, elm, and hackberry all have some degree of susceptibility to inundation, ranging from moderate tolerance to completely intolerant. The Mississippi River experienced flooding in 2014, 2017, and again in 2019 when flood stage was exceeded for a record number of days in St. Paul. Sapling decline at floodplain sites is likely a direct result of this. Forest management within the park should focus both on invasive species control and floodplain reforestation. Several sites with heavy invasive weed species are in areas where leveraging local volunteers for removal projects may be possible. Floodplain reforestation requires a dual approach of research and active management. Research is needed to determine preferred propagule types and planting stock, as well as the most effective ways to control invasives, especially reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.). Active floodplain reforestation can alleviate many of the issues we found here, although this is expensive, limited in scope, and carries with it a great deal of uncertainty. Nonetheless, projects undertaken at a small scale can provide lessons to managers, based on which aspects were successful and which were not. Many of the park forests at MISS are nearing an inflection point and are at risk of becoming irreversibly altered if countermeasures are not undertaken in the near future. At this point, steps taken to promote ecosystem integrity are likely to be less costly and more effective than those which may be needed after further ecosystem decline. The river system through the Twin Cities metro area provides numerous services, both ecological and otherwise. As the need to act is becoming a pressing issue, it is incumbent on land managers to recognize this, and address it.
