Annotation:
David Graham Lloyd was born on 20 June 1937 at Manaia, Taranaki, New Zealand, slightly ahead of his identical twin brother, Peter. The births caused surprise to the family because twins were not expected. His father was a dairy farmer, and David's early years were immersed in country life and helping on the farm. David's mother died of cancer when he was eight years old and his father brought up the twins, as well as his elder siblings, Judith and Trevor, with the help of their grandparents, who farmed next door. Although the death of their mother was a sad loss, David seems to have had a happy childhood and to have excelled at primary school before moving to boarding school with Peter in 1950. At New Plymouth Boys High School, David was most interested in the sciences and also in sports, for which the school was well known. Although relatively small in stature, he played in the first team at rugby, was a tenacious tackler, and also excelled at sprinting and long jump.

Annotation:
Harry Whittington was a palaeontologist of distinction who progressed through academic life from a modest background in the Midlands to become an authority on trilobites, and was the scientist who led the re-evaluation of the Cambrian faunas of the Burgess Shale. His studies of silicified trilobites revealed an array of previously unknown morphological details, and identified larval features of many species for the first time, with implications for the classification of the group as a whole. He recognized patterns in the distribution of Ordovician trilobites that anticipated a revolution in palaeobiogeography after the application of plate tectonic theory to the Lower Palaeozoic. The Burgess Shale project cast new light on the early evolution of complex life on Earth. Whittington had a career of exceptional longevity, which reached its acme long after the age of normal retirement and continued almost without a break to his ninetieth year. He was a professor both at Harvard University and in the University of Cambridge, and inspired a generation of palaeontologists who became well known in their own right. His meticulous reconstructions of Cambrian animals, based on his insistence on facts before speculation, revealed the morphological complexity that was already present in the Cambrian world, especially among arthropods, and provided evidence of curious designs that seemed to be far removed from those of organisms still living. He set the standard for the description and naming of organisms preserved in Konservat-Lagerstätten , those rare occurrences with fossils of soft-bodied organisms. The origination of the major living animal groups by the Cambrian was established by this work, which documented the Cambrian evolutionary ‘explosion’ in detail for the first time.

Professor William (Bill) Johnson, engineer, educator and research scientist, died peacefully on 13 June 2010, aged 88 years. His illustrious academic career spanned more than 50 years, during which time he published more than 400 papers and wrote eight books. His primary speciality within applied mechanics was the applications of plasticity theory to manufacturing processes and to impact mechanics, to both of which he contributed well-received text books. However, he also had a long-established passion for the history of science and technology. His research and publications also included engineering aspects of sports, medicine, history and literature. He engaged students with an exciting style of teaching, engendering enthusiasm for the subject at a time when, primarily, only chalk and blackboard were available. He was also an inspirational research collaborator. Many students and colleagues who had their initial training under his guidance have been appointed to chairs throughout the world.

Annotation:
John (Jack) Francis Talling was a master limnologist who pioneered much of our understanding of the River Nile, the great lakes of the African Rift Valley and those of the English Lake District. He was one of the world's leading authorities on the ecophysiology of freshwater phytoplankton and specialized in the control of their productivity by light and carbon dioxide. His perspectives were formed by interaction with leading scientists of the day, mainly at the Freshwater Biological Association, Cumbria, but also at laboratories in Africa and at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, California. Jack's work on the effects of light on phytoplankton productivity was based on detailed measurements of the underwater light climate in lakes and oceans as well as laboratory and field measurements of the response of phytoplankton photosynthesis to light, involving the development of new or improved measurement methods. Calculation procedures were developed to estimate how light controls primary productivity. He devised the widely used characteristic ‘ I k ’ to quantify the onset of light saturation in the curve that defines the response of photosynthesis to light quantity. Experiences in extremely productive African soda lakes stimulated an interest in the possibility of CO 2 being a limiting factor controlling phytoplankton productivity and, more generally, Jack had the ecological insight to recognize that ecological dynamics resulted from interactions among factors rather than a response to a single variable.

Erwin Louis Hahn was one of the most innovative physical scientists in recent history, impacting generations of scientists through his work in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), optics, and the intersection of these two fields. Starting with his discovery of the spin echo, a phenomenon of monumental significance and practical importance, Hahn launched a revolution in how we think about spin physics, with numerous implications following in many other areas of science. Current students of NMR and coherent optics quickly discover that many of the key concepts and techniques in these fields derive directly from his work.
