Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose with this essay is to illustrate the problematical mother-daughterrelation in Mar-gareta Garpes drama/play “To Julia” through a psychoanalytic and philosophical perspective. To get a deeper understanding for the relations between mother and daughter, and the kind of motherhood that Gloria is practising in the play I have used a hermeneutic method in search for answers to the questions: Why does Gloria take a position as a so called friend or sister in the interaction with her daughter Julia? Why is not mother Gloria capable to be mature, caring and nursing in the interaction with Julia?
Through Gloria Margareta Garpe is giving me possible answers: Gloria is still seeing herself as a rejected and lonely child. The role of the daughter Julia in her mother’s life is to fill an empty space that was created in Gloria’s adolescence when she experienced the same feelings as Julia in present time in the play. The same confused mix of Julia’s and her mother’s feel-ings and needs, Gloria felt in her own childhood.
How a woman turns out as a mother depends on a variety of factors. Mature, caring mother-hood is an act of awareness, responsibility, moral, reflection and adaptation. This can lead to the kind of freedom that de Beauvoir refers to as the ambiguous “reality” meaning the “exis-tence”. The mother who sees her child as a friend or sibling has not emancipated herself from a symbiosis with her own mother. Margareta Garpe illustrates in practise in the play “To Julia” both de Beauvoir´s and Stern’s theories. According to my own interpretation Julia has not yet emancipated herself from her mother Gloria in the end of the play. But her understand-ing for Gloria’s motherhood has increased through their confrontations in the play.

Scientific and engineering problems grow ever larger and more challenging, solving them requires taking advantage of domain expertise and modern compute capabilities. This encourages efficient usage of GPUs and using large scale cluster environments efficiently. Domain experts should not need to acquire the deep knowledge required to develop applications that scale, but rather should be able to express data science and engineering problems in terms of vectorized operations and linear algebra, that is in language inherent to the field. The approach introduced here, gives performance engineers access to low-level capabilities of the hardware, allowing them to collaborate with domain experts in the same language. This removes the need to rewrite scientific code in a low-level language, speeding up the iteration cycle and allowing for rapid prototyping. We investigate composable, layered abstractions for scientific computing. They separate the user intent, the what, from the how of the implementation and the where of the execution. The focus is on the distributed aspects, how array abstractions for distributed and accelerated computing can compose with each other and how we can provide access to low-level capabilities in a transparent fashion. Building and debugging these abstractions is challenging. This work introduces Cthulhu, a unique debugging tool for abstractions, that takes into consideration the dynamic execution model and the static compilation process of Julia.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis project familiarizes the reader with Kristeva's theory of subjectivity as a process and situates her among the plethora of feminist theorists. It also examines her view that religion is an illusory therapy for the modern subject in crisis. Finally, these two themes are brought together in a discussion on her theory of a culture of revolt, derived from the psychoanalytic process. Kristeva's vision for the future of feminism is shown to be deeply philosophical, while also socially and politically important. Furthermore, in revolt culture, religion might well leave open the possibility of researching female subjectivity.

We present two recent parallel programming languages, PetaBricks and Julia, and demonstrate how we can use these two languages to re-examine classic numerical algorithms in new approaches for high-performance computing. PetaBricks is an implicitly parallel language that allows programmers to naturally express algorithmic choice explicitly at the language level. The PetaBricks compiler and autotuner is not only able to compose a complex program using fine-grained algorithmic choices but also find the right choice for many other parameters including data distribution, parallelization and blocking. We re-examine classic numerical algorithms with PetaBricks, and show that the PetaBricks autotuner produces nontrivial optimal algorithms that are difficult to reproduce otherwise. We also introduce the notion of variable accuracy algorithms, in which accuracy measures and requirements are supplied by the programmer and incorporated by the PetaBricks compiler and autotuner in the search of optimal algorithms. We demonstrate the accuracy/performance trade-offs by benchmark problems, and show how nontrivial algorithmic choice can change with different user accuracy requirements. Julia is a new high-level programming language that aims at achieving performance comparable to traditional compiled languages, while remaining easy to program and offering flexible parallelism without extensive effort. We describe a problem in large-scale terrain data analysis which motivates the use of Julia. We perform classical filtering techniques to study the terrain profiles and propose a measure based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to quantify terrain surface roughness. We then give a brief tutorial of Julia and present results of our serial blocked SVD algorithm implementation in Julia. We also describe the parallel implementation of our SVD algorithm and discuss how flexible parallelism can be further explored using Julia.

Machine learning algorithms are often computationally intensive and operate on large datasets. Being able to eciently learn models on large datasets holds the future of machine learning. As the speed of serial computation stalls, it is necessary to utilize the power of parallel computing in order to better scale with the growing complexity of algorithms and the growing size of datasets. In this thesis, we explore the use of Julia, a fairly new high level programming language that lends itself to easy parallelization over multiple CPU cores as well as multiple machines, on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) inference algorithms. First, we take existing algorithms and implement them in Julia. We focus on MCMC inference using Continuous Piecewise-Affine Based (CPAB) transformations and a parallel MCMC sampler for Dirichlet Process Mixture Models (DPMM). Instead of parallelizing over multiple cores on a single machine, our Julia implementations extend existing implementations by parallelizing over multiple machines. We compare our implementation with these existing implementations written in more traditional programming languages. Next, we develop a model Projections Dirichlet Process Gaussian Mixture Model (PDP-GMM) which relaxes the assumption that the draws from a Dirichlet Process Gaussian Mixture Model (DP-GMM) are directly observed. We extend our DPMM Julia implementation and present a few applications of this model.

In this work we study some geometric properties of Julia sets and filled-in Julia sets of polynomials. In addition, we seek a form of measure the Julia set, for this we use the Hausdorff measure and determine a lower bound to the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set.
