Over the past decade, radicalisation has emerged as perhaps the most pervasive framework for understanding micro-level transitions towards violence. However, the concept has not only become a dominant policing framework, but also an overarching governmental strategy encompassing surveillance, security, risk and community engagement. The emergence of this strategy has been accompanied by a whole host of analysts, advisers and scholars, who claim to possess ‘expert’ knowledge of individual transitions towards political violence. Revisiting ‘Radicalisation: the journey of a concept’, Arun Kundnani’s 2012 typology of such ‘expertise’ ( Race & Class, doi 10.1177/0306396812454984), the author comparatively examines scholarly developments in relation to ‘radicalisation’ and juxtaposes new knowledge claims with official government counter-radicalisation strategies and funding programmes in the UK, US and Canada to highlight how some of the most problematic knowledge claims continue to influence social policy as we move forward in the global ‘war on terror’.

When customers journey from a need to a purchase decision and beyond, they rarely do so alone. This article introduces the social customer journey, which extends prior perspectives on the path to purchase by explicitly integrating the important role that social others play throughout the journey. The authors highlight the importance of “traveling companions,” who interact with the decision maker through one or more phases of the journey, and they argue that the social distance between the companion(s) and the decision maker is an important factor in how social influence affects that journey. They also consider customer journeys made by decision-making units consisting of multiple individuals and increasingly including artificial intelligence agents that can serve as surrogates for social others. The social customer journey concept integrates prior findings on social influences and customer journeys and highlights opportunities for new research within and across the various stages. Finally, the authors discuss several actionable marketing implications relevant to organizations’ engagement in the social customer journey, including managing influencers, shaping social interactions, and deploying technologies.

While “Form follows function” is a familiar tenet of 20th century architecture, originally expressed by the Bauhaus School of Design and popularized in America by Frank Lloyd Wright, today’s architectural form usually starts from pursuit of design concepts, a process of an intuitive understanding of design problems solving. The process of making concepts is often associated with the starting point of a long journey, where designers keep improving on and adding details on the concepts until concepts evolve to be innovative and operable. In a conceptual planning with a specific context, the form of the whole design, including layout, architecture and landscape, comes into being naturally according to the expression of concept.

AbstractIn vain have scholars tried to produce a coherent geographical picture of Odysseus' travels. It is argued here that Odysseus makes a cosmic journey at the edges of the earth (perata ges), a phrase used in the text to describe several lands that the hero visits. The cosmic journey was a genre current in the East Mediterranean region in the Iron Age. It was modeled on the Egyptian the journey of the sun god who travels twelve hours in the darkness of the underworld and twelve hours in the sky. Evidence of similar concepts in the Near East is provided by a Babylonian circular map (now in the British Museum) as well as by Phoenician circular bowls. Gilgamesh seems to perform a cosmic journey. As well, Early Greek cosmology utilizes the concept of a circular cosmos. Odysseus' journey spans the two cosmic junctures of the universe: East, where Circe resides, and West, where Calypso lives. Another polar axis is the underworld and the island of the sun.

Large dimensionless numbers, arising out of ratios of various physical constants, intrigued many scientists, especially Dirac. Relying on the coincidence of large numbers, Dirac arrived at the revolutionary hypothesis that the gravitational constant [Formula: see text] should vary inversely at the cosmic time [Formula: see text]. This hypothesis of Dirac, known as the Large Number Hypothesis (LNH), sparked off many speculations, arguments and new ideas in terms of applications. Works done by several authors with LNH as their basic platform are extensively reviewed in this work. Relationship between some of those works are pointed out here elaborately. Possibility of time variations of physical constants other than [Formula: see text] as well as large numbers in various realm of physical and biological sciences are also discussed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate Samsung’s strategic efforts in achieving excellence in quality. Design/methodology/approach – This study divides Samsung’s activities into five distinctive areas: quality leadership, motivating employees, methodologies, preemptive priorities and key activities in the field management. Case studies will be explored based on the chronological analysis of the above five subjects, and a comprehensive roadmap toward excellence will also be suggested. Findings – This study has found that Samsung has used diverse concepts to excel in improving quality and profitability simultaneously. The company’s approaches are divided into five categories and positioned according to their possible contributions to excellence. One of the key findings of this paper is the concept of “the line of redundancy” which adopts parallel systems. For example, its parallel systems such as dual sourcing and 120 per cent human resource management have contributed to Samsung’s quality. Practical implications – The result of this study will help managers implement innovative initiatives for achieving excellence through quality management. Originality/value – Samsung has improved the quality dramatically and many companies want to learn Samsung’s way. This paper investigated how Samsung developed the quality system in the past decades and suggests some findings.

This article tries to deal with the three ways of spiritual journey that will enhance human beings to arrive (wuṣūl) at God as explained in six books of the TQN. Besides, using semantic approach, this study also endeavors to unearth the concept of wuṣūl encapsulated in the three ways of the spiritual journey. Apart from that, this article takes into account as well whether the concept of wuṣūl in the TQN as a unitive experience refers to waḥdah al-wujūd or wahdah al-shuhūd. They offer a variety of potential interests for certain applications: improved deep-rooted stability; excellent optical clarity; and, enhanced bioavailability due to its nanoscale of particles. Though there is still comparatively narrow insight apropos design, development, and optimization of NEs, which mainly stems from the fact that conventional characteristics of emulsion development and stabilization only partly apply to NEs. The growing demand for mobility in general and for air transport in particular puts increasing pressure on today’s transportation providers. Supplying sufficient capacity, hence alleviating potential congestion of the entire system, and ensuring seamless and efficient operation of the overall transport system are two of the main challenges for the future. The integration of transport modes along the entire passenger journey can help to streamline the current system and, thus, increase existing capacities as well as passenger comfort level. Today, there are already some approaches in place that interlink different transport modes by providing single ticketing, or specially dedicated interchange platforms. Four such intermodal transport models are assessed within this paper. For this purpose, a set of key performance indicators is developed and applied to evaluate the intermodal transport performance of each concept. Aspects such as journey time and costs as well as baggage through-handling are considered and data for each concept acquired. Based on the evaluation, the AIRail concept is ranked highest since it best meets the criteria of a seamless passenger journey. However, the results show that there is potential for improvement within each investigated concept.

Experience and trajectory is also a fundamental domain of any institution’s identity and life. This denotes the value of appraising, recognizing, and delineating institutional journeys such as that underlying the development of Person Centered Medicine. The meaning of such institutional journey may be illuminated by the consideration of Odysseus’ journey to Ithaca in Homer’s Iliad. Ibn Taymīyah rejects no all doctrines of Sufism although he criticizes some of them. He, for an instance, does firmly refuse altogether the doctrine of waḥdat al-wujūd and fanā’. Ibn Taymīyah has a unique concept of sufism, which differs from other concepts of Sufism promulgated by other sufis, especially those of Wujūdīyah proponents. Ibn Taymīyah’s concept of Sufism puts great emphasis on it appropriateness with stipulations of sharī‘ah. The compatibility of sharī‘ah and tasawuf has been the main feature of his model of Sufism. When other Sufis start their mystical journey from the stage of sharī‘ah, Ibn Taymīyah puts sharī‘ah as the final stages. To him sharī‘ah is the main goal of mystical journeys; tasawuf should be based on sharī‘ah and it also must end to sharī‘ah. Using al-Taftazānī’s perspective this study finds that the character of Ibn Taymīyah’s Sufism is Taṣawwuf Akhlāqī. This is so because he prefers to purify morality than such mystical experiences as waḥdat al-wujūd or fanā’ and the uses of symbols to reveal the mystical experiences.

The concept of Mamlakhtiyut, defined by Bareli and Kedar as the Israeli version of republicanism, has shaped Israeli political system and civil culture from the 1950s onward. This article examines how this inter-Israeli concept affected David Ben-Gurion’s inter-Jewish policy toward the Jews of the Diaspora during the constructive era of the first year of statehood. The discussion focuses on the journey of Ben-Gurion to the USA during the spring of 1951 and the launching of the Bonds campaign as an alternative Israeli fundraising tool. The study of the journey’s context and a deep analysis of Ben-Gurion’s speeches during the journey demonstrate the importance of the Mamlakhti approach in the setting of Israel–Diaspora relations. I argue that the Mamlakhti-republican discourse was needed by both sides to deepen the relationship during the 1950s, point its deep influence on both policy and discourse, and suggest that today too it may foster the discourse and reframe some of the fundamental subjects that divide Israel from the Diaspora.

The past decade has borne witness to the transformation of South Africa's natural resources law with the introduction of a new legal concept, that of "public trusteeship", to South African jurisprudence. The concept of "public trusteeship" as it is embodied in South African legislation encapsulates the sovereign's duty to act as guardian of certain interests to the benefit of the nation as a whole. In the quest to demystify the incorporation of the concept of "public trusteeship" in South Africa, this article, as a first tentative step, focuses solely on the public trust doctrine as it functions in American jurisprudence. It is the aim of this article to give a thorough theoretical exposition of the development and application of the public trust doctrine in American jurisprudence in order to provide the South African scholar with a perspective on a legal construct founded on the philosophical notion that governments exercise a "fiduciary trust" on behalf of their people.

Abstract The article discusses the notion of the ecological self as a key concept for teacher identity construction during teacher education in the context of sustainable development (SD). Substantial amount of literature supports the understanding that the solution to the global sustainability crisis lies in the field of education where teacher identity, teacher self, plays a significant role. The paper gives the argumentation for the concept of ecological self and focuses on the question how to support the development of the ecological self during teacher education (TE). Esbjörn-Hargens & Zimmerman’s model of eco-selves and Saks’ model of intention are presented that could be used for that purpose. Some methods for supporting the development of an ecological self of a future teacher are also shared, for investigation and practical implementation in TE. The limitations of the present approach are obvious first and foremost due to the understanding that we are currently facing transformation in governing paradigms, change in dominating worldviews that penetrate any quest for ‘truth’, also in the field of science.

Purpose This study aims to research the job search journey of Portuguese Millennials. A job search journey is defined as the contact points between organisations and candidates throughout the job search process and the flow of this journey. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 13 individuals. Findings This paper shows that the contact points established by individuals during the first stage of their job search influence the subsequent contact points chosen to gather information about the organisation and also the journey undertaken up until the decision is made to apply for the job. Originality/value This research intends to contribute to the existing literature in two ways: it proposes a new concept which is designated the job search journey, and it maps out the job search journey of Portuguese Millennials.

This paper examines the heroic self-discovery of a common shepherd in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist (1988) through the concept of popular culture. Santiago, the protagonist, abandons his home and family in teenage for a mysterious hidden treasure. What are the reasons that make him to undertake an adventurous journey from the known to the unknown land? So this paper draws on ideas from Marshall W. Fishwick and Joseph Campbell to respond the shepherd’s journey in order to substantiate his expedition as an adventure of the hero. Santiago’s journey of self- discovery can be analyzed in the theoretical frame of the hero journey and the quest of myth. Therefore, Santiago’s journey from Andalusia to Africa in search of a hidden treasure is uncommon because he begins his journey in a response to an exotic recurring dream where a child summons him to the Pyramids of Egypt. This is the reason why his journey differs from the celebrities, artists, politicians, and mythical heroes.

Conceptual teaching was developed three decades ago as an alternative to conventional teaching approaches. It promised a significant shift in teaching practices across different disciplines and age groups. Traditionally, science subjects in high school tend to be content-heavy. Teaching science, especially biology, is still rooted in teaching methods that facilitate factual understanding and low-road transfer of knowledge. As a result, students’ knowledge remains compartmentalized. Students rarely make connections with other disciplines and transfer their biological knowledge to new situations. Bringing concepts to biology is a challenging task. Despite compelling evidence for concept-based teaching, there are few examples of how it can be implemented and replace content-based teaching. This article describes the changes to teaching instructions in biology over the last decade as well as the main challenges that prevent incorporating novel teaching approaches in a biology classroom. The author suggests concept-based teaching as an effective alternative to conventional, content-focused teaching and offers some ideas for implementing concepts into teaching biology in the context of blended learning.

PurposeThe study aims to explore how concept stores (theoretically) differ from other experience-based retail formats, and hence, how they (practically) contribute to a diversified retail store portfolio.Design/methodology/approachCase study based on semi-structured, qualitative interviews with seven IKEA retail managers, three industry experts and 26 customers of IKEA concept stores in London and Stockholm.FindingsThe concept store represents a conceptual departure from other experiential store formats. It is neither fully experiential in the sense that it is not only about marketing communications nor is it sales or profit-focused. Its aim is to be an accessible touchpoint that reduces friction on a diversified customer journey with its value to the retail portfolio being that it attracts new and latent customers, mitigates existing inhibiting factors and drives them to other touchpoints.Research limitations/implicationsIdeas about the different characteristics of new store formats and their potential to shape the customer experience are extended. New formats reflect innovation in retailing and are part of a retail portfolio which generates different customer expectations and determinants from traditional store formats which provide the customers' existing reference point.Practical implicationsThe contributions of new formats should be evaluated in light of other existing formats in the portfolio and not isolated. This is particularly true when considering format cannibalisation and the potentially extended customer journey that arises when customers use traditional format stores and new concept format stores simultaneously.Originality/valuePrevious research, using sales metrics and market-based results as performance determinants, suggests negative outcomes for format diversification. Our study suggests that the contributions of the concept store format should be viewed from an overall customer journey perspective and the “performance” of different format based touchpoints are not best captured through traditional sales evaluation methods.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss how educators can harness the natural momentum of learning to create a dramatic and exciting hero’s learning journey. Given the importance of motivation, educators can borrow ideas from game designers by using gamification – a process to re-frame a real life goal to be more appealing and achievable. A series of learning activities, developed to meet both cognitive and emotional needs, results in an engaging learning journey. Design/methodology/approach The concept presented, based on PSI Theory, OCEAN Big Five character traits and player/learner archetypes, is that learners are motivated by three basic needs: affiliation, competence or certainty (assuming other physiological needs are met). Findings Armed with insight into types of motivations at different phases, learner experience designers can create different learning journeys and user profiles. Learning activities can be planned for each need and phase based on changing motivations: collaborate and curate (affiliation), choice and ownership (certainty), challenge and accountability (competence). Research limitations/implications Further research is needed in the area of gamification in education. A qualitative study should be conducted on preferred learning and assessment activities for each player archetype and, importantly, this research should represent broad samples and not be restricted to the online gaming community. Originality/value Rather than focussing on an isolated unit of study, and asynchronous eLearning modules, learning designers can use modern technologies to seed and nurture learning communities where each person has an appealing pathway to enable them to move from novice to expert at their own pace in a spiral of satisfying learning.

Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital can help ESL instructors develop professionally and can lead to other related concepts that can address behavioral issues in the classroom and facilitate instruction. To illustrate my professional journey, I begin by focusing on a simple definition of cultural capital and consider how it relates to other areas such as soft skills and metacognitive skills. The educational experiences with respect to cultural capital and other skills that many of our international students have can vastly differ from what is found in American classrooms. This is especially true of students who have been taught in a culture where they memorize facts, do not ask questions or argue their point of view, and have not been involved in any creative process related to learning. Therefore, it is important to explicitly teach these skills. I conclude by sharing some examples of how I addressed and taught cultural capital in the classroom and give ideas of how to create one’s own mini-lessons.

This article addresses the Elias Canetti’s autobiography from a formative point of view searching for another meaning for the trip concept, in which desire and pleasure are not present, as one would expect from a sightseeing tour or trekking, but a journey that, involuntary and forcibly, crosses the individual, (de)forming them. Accordingly, the refuge, the escape, the self-exile, they relate a path of personal tragedies that gains other meanings when narrated. Elias Canetti’s autobiographical narrative is divided in three volumes – “The tongue set free”, “The torch in my ear” and “The play of the eyes” – and tells us about the author’s migratory routes across a Europe crumbling under wars and totalitarian regimes which arose in the first half of the 20th century. His testimony is an account of a world that catches a glimpse of totalitarian experiences and the trivialization of evil that marks the history of Western civilization. Elias Canetti’s writings narrates the roads he had to take to avoid direct contact with the Great Wars, and exposes certain (de)formative aspects of migration, as well as how these experiences, so open to uncertainties and rid of any guaranties, appear before the eyes of a young man from a rich family, whose mother tried to protect from the perils of the world. This feature is one of many highlights, a sine qua non element in his stories, because that is where all the terror and pain lie for those who flee their homeland to venture into foreign lands in an almost instinctive attempt to survive. It is in this sense that we work the concept of (de)formation in its relation with the concept of journey.

Manufacturing enterprises today are forced to face radical challenges in the disruptive concepts of Smart Manufacturing (SM) and Industry 4.0 to stay competitive. Most Multinational Enterprise (MNEs) have initiated their journey towards adopting SM. As a mainspring of many manufacturing economies, Small and Medium-Enterprise (SMEs) are still struggling to understand the complexity offered in SM, and many of them are not ready to embrace the concept of SM. To overcome this, SMEs first need to assess their readiness and maturity before embarking on an SM journey. The existing available readiness assessment model seems to be suitable for MNEs, and there is still a lack of tailored models that suit SMEs. This paper sought to pinpoint the conceptual framework from the review of the existing readiness-maturity assessment and identify the gap of existing model as well as proposed a tailored model framework that are suitable for SMEs. Ultimately, this model will be used to pursue a comprehensive scholarly study across Malaysia. This paper aims to reveal the Journey of Katniss Everdeen by exploring the way monomyth concept is established within the The Hunger Games 1st series. It employs Joseph Campbell’s theory of mythical heroes and quests which he initiates in his book Heroes with a Thousand Faces. The analysis discovers that Katniss initiates her Heroine Journey by volunteering herself to join the Hunger Games. She passes various trials that influence her character’s transformation. She gains two identities during the Journey, as an innocent girl from District 12 and as a victor of Hunger Games. She achieves the true love act with Peeta as a trigger step to move to the next Journey. This paper concludes that the cycle of monomyth in this series ends in the middle of Return stage. It indicates that this series is a trigger act and a beginning step of Katniss Journey for transforming herself to be a heroine at the end of her Journey.

Abstract. This paper examines the development over historical time of the meaning and uses of the term resilience. The objective is to deepen our understanding of how the term came to be adopted in disaster risk reduction and resolve some of the conflicts and controversies that have arisen when it has been used. The paper traces the development of resilience through the sciences, humanities, and legal and political spheres. It considers how mechanics passed the word to ecology and psychology, and how from there it was adopted by social research and sustainability science. As other authors have noted, as a concept, resilience involves some potentially serious conflicts or contradictions, for example between stability and dynamism, or between dynamic equilibrium (homeostasis) and evolution. Moreover, although the resilience concept works quite well within the confines of general systems theory, in situations in which a systems formulation inhibits rather than fosters explanation, a different interpretation of the term is warranted. This may be the case for disaster risk reduction, which involves transformation rather than preservation of the "state of the system". The article concludes that the modern conception of resilience derives benefit from a rich history of meanings and applications, but that it is dangerous – or at least potentially disappointing – to read to much into the term as a model and a paradigm.

Resilience has become a popular term in spatial planning, often replacing sustainability as a reference frame. However, different concepts and understandings are embedded within it, which calls for keeping a critical stance about its widespread use. In this paper, we engage with the resilience turn in spatial planning and we dwell on the relation between resilience and sustainability from a planning perspective. Building on insights from ecology, complex system theory and epistemology, we question whether resilience can effectively act as a ‘boundary object’, i.e., a concept plastic enough to foster cooperation between different research fields and yet robust enough to maintain a common identity. Whilst we do not predicate a dichotomy between resilience and sustainability, we argue that the shift in the dominant understanding of resilience from a descriptive concept, to a broader conceptual and normative framework, is bound to generate some remarkable tensions. These can be associated with three central aspects in resilience thinking: (i) the unknowability and unpredictability of the future, whence a different focus of sustainability and resilience on outcomes vs. processes, respectively, ensue; (ii) the ontological separation between the internal components of a system and an external shock; (iii) the limited consideration given by resilience to inter- and intra-generational equity. Empirical evidence on actual instances of planning for resilience from different contexts seems to confirm these trends. We advocate that resilience should be used as a descriptive concept in planning within a sustainability framework, which entails a normative and transformative component that resonates with the very raison d’être of planning.
