Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe rapid urbanisation that has accompanied the development of cities has profoundly transformed natural environments, exerting a direct influence on the atmosphere in the vicinity. In addition to the well-known phenomenon of the urban heat island, characterised by higher temperatures in urban areas than in the surrounding rural areas, cities also have the capacity to modify convection and precipitation. In favourable situations, these phenomena can be reinforced over and downwind of the urbanised area, depending on the prevailing wind. To improve the modelling of these urban-atmosphere interactions and improve their anticipation, it is essential to study the impact of urbanisation on precipitation and understand the mechanisms involved. This thesis is based on multiple approaches, integrating observational and modelling tools, to conduct a comprehensive study of the impact of urbanisation on convection and precipitation in the Paris region. The first step involved establishing a climatology of thunderstorms over the Île-de-France region and its neighbouring departments between 2010 and 2022. Data from the French radar mosaic and lightning observations were analysed in order to identify the periods of the year and the zones most affected by severe convection in the Paris region. The direction of the mid-altitude wind was considered in this work, which demonstrated an increase in thunderstorm frequency in the sectors over and downwind of the city compared to the upwind sector.Subsequently, a second step involved the conduct of numerical simulations to ascertain the sensitivity of precipitation to urbanisation. Two configurations of the Meso-NH research model were implemented, one accounting for the urbanisation of Paris and the other replacing urban areas with vegetation. The originality of this thesis lies in the usage of a set of simulations with a horizontal resolution of 300m, which allowed for the numerical uncertainties inherent in the modelling of thunderstorm phenomena to be taken into account. This approach, initially tested on a case of diurnal convection, demonstrated its utility for estimating the significance of the results and analysing the urban processes involved in the alteration of precipitation. The method was then extended to a range of convective situations over the Paris region in order to provide a broader overview of the key processes. The analysis carried out showed that due to the increase of sensible heat flux in the urban environment, the vertical velocities in the lower layers are strengthened, and the boundary layer is thicker. This has the effect of triggering convection over the urbanised area and increasing precipitation over or downwind of the city during favourable situations. This work provides new perspectives on the use of ensembles on a horizontal hectometric scale to study complex phenomena such as thunderstorms and their interaction with urbanised surfaces

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn this thesis, we have analysed how the organising committees of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics have used these mega-events to negotiate the image of the country and its inhabitants through the tension between historical national narratives and idealised standards of what is expected from a modern nation in relation to the world scene. To do it so, firstly, we have identified and discussed a series of nationalistic historical core narratives which - in different periods of Brazilian history - were crafted to contextualise Brazil and Brazilians within western modernity. Nonetheless, as we understand that there is a myriad of different ways of experiencing and representing a continental nation filled with regional contrasts as Brazil, we also have contextualised the representation of the cultures of different Brazils within dominant narratives of Brazilian-ness. Once we have delineated such nationalist and regionalist narratives, we were able to identify them in the content analysis of the audiovisual material of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics such as posters, logos, mascots, ceremonies and so on. The adoption, rejection or negotiation of these narratives in the aforementioned ceremonies do not only tell us how the architects of these events understood and projected the nation’s image abroad, but also unveiled their perception of Brazilian-ness and modernity. What is more, the analysis has also exposed the organising committees’ judgment of the role that the cultures of different regions play in their idea of the nation as well as their understanding of how different peoples – as the Luso-Brazilians, the Afro-Brazilians, the Amerindians, etc - have contributed to the formation of the nation
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleInternational tourism is marked by the relationship of multiple actors with very dissimilar financial, technological and human resources. Also, given the high leverage power of international tourism actors, will they not influence decision-making processes in tourism destinations from the global South? Our analysis focuses on the micro-political level in the Brazilian destination of Natal. The three hypotheses of this thesis come from its central issue. The first one is that local actors themselves might largely cause the bases of conflicts. The second hypothesis is that foreign actors might have intensified the already existing conflicts between indigenous peoples from the territories occupied by tourism. The third hypothesis raises the possibility that this influence extends sometimes to the field of interference. Ethnography was chosen both as a theoretical method and as a technical procedure. A set of other methods was also applied: interviews, direct observation, consultation and analysis of written documents and the use of statistics and figures. Theoretical discussions combined with the analysis of the interviews confirm the impact of international influences on the decision-making processes concerning tourism in Natal, Brazil. This influence is, however, highly counterbalanced by the agency and the counter-influences exerted both from state and non-state actors

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleRio de Janeiro’s hosting of the World Cup 2014 and the Olympics Games 2016, is the consecration of the "attractive city" strategy, which is based on the triplet organization of mega-events, dynamic economic context and circumstantial alignment between the three levels of Government. This neoliberal policy and governance related to the construction of the urban space implies a reconfiguration of coalitions of historical actors present in the circuit of urban accumulation. Rio’s urban renewal aims to link this city to the global circuit of cities competition, but also to evade from its path of economic and political decay, which began in the 1980s. In official statements, the ongoing urban transformations meet the requirements of the "Olympic city" and generate positive impacts for local and metropolitan inhabitants. In this context, investments in mobility infrastructure are the most meaningful, both in financial and impacts on urban space terms. This leads the government rhetoric of a "transport revolution", able to solve the urban mobility city crisis, clearly attached to processes of urban segregation and exclusion. The object of this thesis is to evaluate, through a multiscale analysis, which includes metropolitan, municipal and intra-urban dimensions, the various impacts of transportation projects on social and spatial justice in Rio de Janeiro. Then, based on justice theories applied to Geography, a multicriteria analytic model of justice is constructed, to assess the impact of transportation projects on terms of demand satisfaction and the effects on other processes such as expropriations and land speculation. The qualitative methodology (semi-structured interviews and field observation), along with the multicriteria framework of justice, allowed the identification of the various groups of conflicting actors in the constitution of the "attractive city" and, among them, those who "win" and those who "lose". The results indicate that the impact of the "transport revolution" in Rio de Janeiro, for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, causes shifts that tear down neither the Brazilian road mobility model, nor the neoliberal’s city segregation rationale. Change everything in order to nothing change?

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis master thesis deals with the representations circulating on the Internet before and during the historical and unexpected popular uprising in Brazil, during the 2013 Confederations Cup. The wave of protests, which triggered a passionate online debate about mega-events, is still an understudied phenomenon. To fill this gap, this research investigates the problem by examining the case of the city of Rio de Janeiro, host of the finals of 2014 World Cup and of 2016 Olympic Games. The study aims to analyze on the representations emerging from news networks in the light of the fast-paced urban transformations and conflicts that currently characterize mega-events in the city. A natural logic analysis of documents published between 2009 and 2013 by four particular types of news sites highlights how social representations reproduced: (1) the government strategy of urban branding and (2) the civil movements strategies to face urban transformations. At the theoretical and methodological levels, the study explores the research path of liquid journalism, inspired by the work of sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, who focused on the cultural, economic and political consequences of globalization. The collected data were analyzed from a critical and theoretical viewpoint. The results were discussed by confronting those obtained by the researchers who we referenced in the literature.
