Previous studies have always sought to elucidate the degradation of paper on aspects such as color, tensile strength and elongation. However, the known literature shows no systematic studies of degradation of Japanese paper, material widely used in the restoration process. In these processes, the Japanese paper is applied to the paper object and from that moment there has been the evolution of dual system properties where the materials are physically embedded or attached. In this situation, it is of great importance to understanding the behavior in terms of color and mechanical properties of Japanese papers in order to allow a choice most appropriate for a given restoration. Thus, we present a study, which we consider initial on the color change in White paper samples, commonly used in office printer, on Whatman paper samples and samples of six types of Japanese papers. Samples of the papers were subjected to a controlled artificial degradation process which had as a catalyst to irradiation by UV light. The temporal evolution of the color of the samples was measured weekly. The colors were measured in the colors space L*a*b*. Furthermore, mechanical tests were performed in almost all samples as a function of ultraviolet irradiation time. To analyze the color data, we used the concept of color contrast, ΔE*, and defined a new parameter named CDI - Color Degradation Index. For the analysis of the mechanical behavior of data, a new parameter named QFM - Quality Factor Mechanics has been set. In the end, a diagram where the papers are classified into quality regions regarding the color and the mechanical strength is displayed

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleJapan is a country placed at a great cultural and geographical distance from Spain and, being categorized as “oriental”, its image has been widely represented using stereotypes. Paratext study in translation research is relatively new and, furthermore, there are not many studies dealing with Japanese translation in Spain. Paratexts are often a reader's first contact with a book, and thus they may influence readers' interpretation when reading the text. The image of the Other starts being shaped even earlier, when certain books are chosen to be translated. The framework of this study is Translation Descriptive Studies, including a multidisciplinary approach between translation sociology, translation history and cultural studies. Among the fundamental concepts we deal with are paratexts, representation of Otherness, selection of books to be translated and indirect translation. Our main hypothesis is that an important part of the image of the Japanese Other offered in translated literature in the target culture begins when books are selected for translation and that this image is reshaped in the paratexts that surround translation. Moreover, we think that the image of the Japanese Other offered in the paratexts has not significantly changed in the last 40 years. In order to analyse translation paratexts, a database was created, which allowed us to study a wide view of the translations from Japanese in Spain. The main body of this study has two parts: the analysis of the corpus, mainly quantitative, and the analysis of the subcorpus, a selection of translations whose paratexts are analysed in depth. The corpus includes all books directly or indirectly translated from Japanese and published in Spain from 1900 to 2014. Throughout time, the number of translations has been steadily increasing, especially in the last ten years. Almost a half of the total are non-literary books and, despite diversity in subjects, most of the books are in categories that fit into the predominant image of Japan (martial arts, Buddhism, business and drawing). Therefore, the selection of these works to be translated reflects and reinforces a specific image of Japan. In book covers, images evoking tradition and feminine characters are prevalent. The subcorpus consists of thirteen editions deriving from four translations of works by Kawabata and Mishima, whose paratexts are analysed: mainly book cover, back cover, prefaces and footnotes, among others. Through this analysis, we have verified the reiterated use of stereotypes in the presentation of the Other in the paratexts of both new and old publications. The results show that, even while traditional image usage has proportionally decreased, the same stereotypes used 40 years ago are still being widely used in the paratexts of translations. This dissertation includes two main contributions: on the one hand, it demonstrates the importance of paratexts in the creation and reinforcement of cultural images and how stereotypes are prevailing in the presentation of the Japanese Other and, on the other hand, it provides an extensive database which may be useful for anyone interested in Japanese literature or in its translation.

[EN] Although facing is widely used for multiple purposes, there is still little information about it. At first glance, facing seems to be an almost neutral and simple intervention. Its application, however, entails complex consequences including changes to a painting's strata, and it can have potential repercussions on the conservation of the paint itself. In most cases, it would be better to recur to alternative and less intrusive methods, but sometimes the use of facing is strictly necessary. For this reason, during this PhD a research protocol addressed the design of remoistenable temporary supports (RTS) for the facing of canvas paintings, an alternative method that enables a higher control of the adhesive penetration into the substrate, and thus the easier removal of residues. Great attention was given in this assessment to the needs of restorers, in terms of not only availability and the cost-effectiveness of materials, but also for the concerns of the safety of the operator as well as the environment. In the first section of this dissertation, a historical review is made starting from the first indirect sources of the 18th century up to the present day. Then facing's adhesive and penetrative mechanisms are analysed, focusing on conservative issues related to the used materials and application methodologies. The second section describes the assessment of the innovative RTS methodology, tested according to a meticulous research project adapting advanced analytical technologies to the specific needs. During the first experimental stage, chemical, physical and mechanical analyses of the different classes of materials (adhesives and temporary supports) and their compatibility for the preparation of remoistenable tissues were carried out. The second step of the investigation focused on the evaluation of the application of remoistenable temporary supports on mock-ups reproducing a canvas painting, in order to test those considered the most relevant factors. Observations with optical microscope in visible and ultraviolet (UV) light and analyses with fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were carried out to evaluate the permanence of residues and the assessment of the possible modifications that may have occurred on the painted surface. Micro-Raman spectroscopy associated with a high-resolution microscope was used to determine the penetration of the adhesive into the cracks of the mock-ups. Finally, peeling tests at different environmental conditions were carried out to assess the adhesion strength of the selected RTS.

Faff, R. W., X. Shao, F. Alqahtani, M. Atif, A. Bialek-Jaworska, A. Chen, G. Duppati et al. „Increasing the discoverability on non-English language research papers: a reverse-engineering application of the pitching research template“. 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/16815.
Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDiscoverability or visibility is a challenge that faces all researchers worldwide – with an ever increasing supply of good research entering the scholarly marketplace; this challenge is only becoming intensified as time passes. The global language of scholarly research is English and so the obstacle of getting noticed is magnified manyfold when the article is not written in the English language. Indeed, despite rapid advances in technology, the “tyranny of language” creates a segmentation inhibiting scholarly research and innovation generally. Mass translation of non-English language articles is neither feasible nor desirable. Our paper proposes a strategy for remedying this segmentation – such that, the work of non-English language scholars become more discoverable. The core piece of this strategy is a “reverse-engineering” [RE] application of Faff’s (2015, 2017) “pitching research” template. More specifically, we provide translated versions of the “cued” template across THIRTY THREE different languages: (1) Arabic; (2) Chinese; (3) Dutch; (4) French; (5) Greek; (6) Hindi; (7) Indonesian; (8) Japanese; (9) Korean; (10) Lao; (11) Norwegian; (12) Polish; (13) Portuguese; (14) Romanian; (15) Russian; (16) Sinhalese; (17) Spanish; (18) Tamil; (19) Thai; (20) Urdu; (21) Vietnamese; (22) Myanmar; (23) German; (24) Persian; (25) Bengali; (26) Filipino; (27) Italian; (28) Afrikaans; (29) Khmer (Cambodia); (30) Danish; (31) Finnish; (32) Hebrew; (33) Turkish. Further, we showcase illustrative dual language examples of the RE strategy for the Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and French cases.
