Manuel GonzÁlez prada (1844-1918), like inca garcilaso de la vega, César vallejo, josé marÍa arguedas, and mario vargas llosa, ranks among the top Peruvian literary figures, but only in Peru, where his work is hotly debated by literati, social scientists, historians, politicians, and journalists. Outside Peru he rates no more than the inclusion in anthologies of one of his poems; his most famous essay, “Nuestros indios” (“Our Indians”); or the occasional critical article on his work. However, with the Cuban José Martí (1853-95), González Prada is a founder of Latin American modernism, a movement that critics generally accept as running roughly from the publication of Rubén Darío's Azul, in 1888, to Darío's death, in 1916. Gordon Brotherston notes that Darío coined the term modernismo the same year he published Azul (vii). There are many reasons there has been less interest in González Prada than in Martí and other modernists. To begin with, Darío, in an 1888 visit to Peru, met with Ricardo Palma but not González Prada (Castro). Palma, writing in a more traditional style—even though he invented a genre, tradiciones—was the establishment's literary darling, while González Prada, always the innovator in style and an agitator in subject matter, remained largely unknown outside his native land. Thus, it made perfect sense that the maker of literary movements would visit the internationally known Palma but not González Prada, who could not add to his fame and expanding literary networks. Furthermore, when Darío later went to New York he turned his epistolary relationship with Martí into a personal friendship (Henríquez Ureña 93). In the United States there is much more interest in Martí, who lived here, than in González Prada, who did not. Hispanic modernism is typically understood to include the like-minded people whom Darío knew personally, such as Martí, Julián del Casal (Cuba), Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera (Mexico), Ricardo Jaimes Freyre (Bolivia), and Juan Ramón Jiménez (Spain), and to exclude those whom he did not, such as Adela Zamudio (Bolivia) and González Prada. Finally, González Prada's anarchism, his feminism, and his tell-it-like-it-is essays did not endear him to many people.

Abstract Advances in understanding the genetic landscape of cancer have paved the way for more precise molecular profiling and the development of more efficacious therapeutic options. However, underrepresentation in clinical research endeavors has left the Latin American population uncharacterized, which may prevent them from reaping the benefits of these advancements. This study sought to identify the genetic drivers and actionable mutations in solid tumors from Chilean patients, enhancing our understanding of the mutational landscape in a population with a genetically diverse background shaped by admixture. Methods: 468 biopsy tissues from gastric (171), gallbladder (91), breast (72), Ovarian (69), and colorectal (65) Chilean cancer patients were collected in several pathology services and biobank at Universidad de Chile. Target-sequencing was performed using Oncomine Comprehensive Assay v.1 and v.3; and TumorSec cancer panel. Data from TCGA, MSK-IMPACT, and ACCR GENIE cohorts was accessed through cBioportal and used for comparison with non-Hispanic populations. Variants were annotated with CGI, CancerVar, OncoKB, and ClinVar tools. Results: Overall, tumors have mutations mainly in TP53 (42.4%), PIK3CA (12.5%), KRAS (9.6%), PTEN (4.7%), BRCA1/2 (9%). Driver mutations were present in TP53 (42%), PIK3CA (16%), KRAS (10%), ERBB2 (7%), PTEN (7%), BRCA1/2 (8%), ATM (7%), among others. Accionable mutations were found primarily in PIK3CA (17%), KRAS (10%), ERBB2 (9%), and NTRK1/2/3 (4.8%). Besides already-known mutations, many “novel” mutations were also found in all tumor types. About 5-15% of novel variants were predicted drivers, including variants in CDH1, NOTCH1, BRCA1/2, MTOR, TSC2, and MSH2 genes. Significantly, key driver mutations identified in non-Hispanic patients from international cohorts are also prevalent in admixed Chilean patients. However, variations at the driver pathway level were also observed. Notably, the PI3K and MTOR pathways were more frequently affected in Chilean CRC and GBC, respectively. Furthermore, mutations in specific genes, such as TP53 in GBC, were associated with Amerindian genetic ancestry. The observed differences could be attributed to the abundance of newly identified driver-predicted variants, though the possibility of the admixed genetic background influencing the oncogenic process in various tissue types cannot be excluded. Background:The mortality in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) varies largely across different countries most probably due to social, healthcare and ethnic differences. Objectives:To analyze the causes and identify predictive factors of mortality of SLE in Spain in the present century. Methods:We performed a cross-sectional and retrospective study analyzing data from the RELESSER cohort (Spanish Registry of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology). We included all patients diagnosed with SLE since the year 2000 and recorded sociodemographic, clinical and serological variables, comorbidities and treatments, as well as indicators of disease activity, damage and severity. The characteristics of the deceased patients were compared with those of the survivors, and variables with clinical significance or statistical significance were grouped into multivariate models to determine which ones were independently associated with the outcome of the disease. Results:A total of 2004 patients were included, 88.6% female, the mean age at diagnosis was 38.3 (± 15.3) years, with a mean delay in diagnosis of 28.9 (± 52.6) months. Up to 2.84% of the individuals had died. The leading cause of death was SLE activity (n=16), followed by infections (n=14), vascular events (n=7) and cancer (n=6). The mean age of death was 54.68 (± 20.13) years, and neither age, sex nor delay in diagnosis was independently associated with mortality. The presence of nephritis, depression, severe infections, organ damage (SLICC/ACR DI) or disease activity (SLEDAI), as well as the use of cyclophosphamide, rituximab or high doses of corticosteroids, were predictors of mortality in our cohort. Antimalarial treatment and skin manifestations were linked to improved survival. Conclusion:In the RELESSER cohort, clinical factors, co-morbidities, as well as therapeutic attitudes were associated with a significant increase in mortality in SLE. Interestingly, depression was independently associated to mortality. The activity of the disease and infections continue to be the main causes of death at the beginning of the 21st century amongst our patients.

The general objective of this study is to analyse the theoretical discourse on poetry between 1819 and 1919, based on four fundamental authors of this period. Once neoclassical poetics was called into question and lacking an overall theory of literature, these authors proposed theoretical approaches to poetics in texts of various kinds : treatises, manuals, but also articles, reviews or auctorial paratexts. We propose to read this heterogeneous corpus as realizations of a theoretical discourse on poetry, in which theory has a variable status, epistemology, scope and formalization. At the same time, the conception of their theories reactivates knowledge and insights inherited from classical culture. We present an archaeology of this dialectic between what has been learned and the need for new knowledge. The research also proposes a rereading of the poetic theories of the 19th century in Hispanic America, based on the works of Bello, Heredia, González Prada and Jaimes Freyre

Numerous challenges confront correctional health staff in serving the needs of incarcerated adults and juveniles. Effective screening, timely referral, and appropriate treatment are critical. Their implementation requires interagency collaboration, adherence to established national standards of care, and implementation of continuous quality improvement practices and research on the health needs of this vulnerable patient population. Effective evaluation and treatment during incarceration meets important public health objectives and helps improve health services and effective transition into the community upon release. Many types of ‘free world’ health care organizations—such as hospitals, nursing homes, and psychiatric facilities—are accredited by the Joint Commission. Similarly, jails, prisons, juvenile detention, and other correctional facilities may be accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (a spinoff from the American Medical Association), the American Correctional Association, the Joint Commission, or a combination of the above. Although national accreditation is typically voluntary, it is often a contractual requirement for universities, other health care systems, and private vendors who provide health care services to correctional systems. In addition, when facilities undergo investigation or litigation, or are placed in receivership or federal oversight, they are often mandated to establish and maintain national accreditations. This chapter presents a brief historical narrative of the events that resulted in the development and adoption of national jail, prison, and juvenile correctional health care standards; a cogent review of jail and prison standards with particular relevance to psychiatry and mental health; and discussion of accreditation programs.

Research in mental health issues in prisoner populations essentially stopped in the mid 1970’s. It is now re-emerging as a critical component of improving mental health care and helping toward recovery for the incarcerated mentally ill. Mental illness, ranging from acute anxiety to schizophrenia, is endemic within prisons and jails. Unlike their free world counterparts, however, incarcerated people have a constitutional right to mental health treatment. Yet, despite the need for and right to mental health treatment, remarkably little reliable and valid evidence is available on the nature and level of mental illness among incarcerated people, the effects of incarceration on symptomatology, the availability and quality of medication, cognitive, and psychosocial treatment for disorders, and how context impacts the effectiveness of the treatment that is available. Evidence is absent because corrections-based research is constrained by regulation, financing, and inexperience. In this chapter, the history of prisoner research and the evolution of federal regulations to protect prisoners as human subjects will be reviewed and then discussed in terms of how regulation has impacted correctional mental health research, after first defining what is meant by research and why research is needed to inform policy and practice decisions. This will be followed by recommendations for building the correctional mental health research evidence base. The intent here is to help researchers, in collaboration with stakeholders, develop, design, and implement research studies, and disseminate evidence to advance science and the quality of care available to incarcerated people with mental illnesses within the current regulatory environment.

Abstract Pedro Albizu Campos’s 1965 funeral witnessed an outpouring of local and hemispheric support. Although the Nationalist Party never recovered its earlier popularity, enough pressure existed so that by the late 1960s Puerto Rican governors released Nationalist political prisoners who had been jailed since the 1950s. However, the five Nationalists who had attacked President Truman or the US Congress remained jailed in US prisons. A national and international campaign for their freedom, known as Free the Five Nationalists, gained momentum in the 1970s. In 1979 President Jimmy Carter granted the prisoners unconditional release.

Abstract This chapter examines the tensions between local and federal regulation of mobility in the antebellum era. Southern and midwestern states used their police power to impose bonds, taxes, and registration on free black people. The Seamen Acts jailed free black sailors who entered southern ports from abroad, or from other states, for the duration of their stay. Critics objected that these acts violated the commerce clause, the treaty-making power of the United States, and the privileges and immunities of black citizens. When John Marshall defined federal commerce power in Gibbons v. Ogden (1824) to include navigation, Southerners feared that Congress might use this power to regulate the mobility of free and enslaved black people. Slaveholders therefore welcomed the decision in New York v. Miln (1837) upholding a state immigration law as a legitimate exercise of police power, similar to laws regulating the mobility of free black people. Immigration, black mobility, and slavery remained tightly intertwined throughout the antebellum era.

Gas ingestion arises from free surface dip during draining from liquid storage tank does serious damage to the nuclear engineering practices, which should be considered in the design work. In this article, numerical simulations of transient process of draining from cylindrical tanks have been conducted with volume-of-fluid (VOF) method, by using the commercial CFD code FLUENT14.5. The relation between critical submerged depth and the Froude number has been investigated, then the influence of different factors on critical submerged depth also has been discussed. The results show that the Jain’s empirical formula are available to estimate the critical submerged depth flow with weak vortex in the condition of high diameter ratio and high initial water level. Moreover, the initial strong vortex significantly increase the critical submerged depth, while the surface tension has pretty small effects on the critical submerged depth when the Froude number is large.
