Badran, Abed. „Space design, making and tectonics in Palestinian architecture in Israel : impacts of the 'Israeli Project'“. Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/108427/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The physical construction of the Israeli state has brought massive destruction, demolition, dispossession, and expropriation of Palestinian cities, villages, lands, and natural resources. In addition, Palestinian common spatial memory and culture were blurred over nearly one century. The thesis explores and assesses the dynamics and processes which were caused - and occurred exclusively at Palestinian architecture, by the mechanism and practice of the 'Israeli Project'. Critical review of the literature on Palestinian villages and architecture in Israel has revealed that research has yet to read the relationship between the 'Israeli Project' practice, and the ‘aggressively’ transformed Palestinian domestic space, tectonics, making and its shaping factors. Furthermore, the current literature reveals misunderstanding of the traditional Palestinian architecture’s essence, its consistency, its intrinsic values and its evolutionary shaping factors. The thesis discovers that the traditional Palestinian house before 1948 had evolved in accordance with the evolution of Palestinian settlements; the Early/Pre-Form (nomadic), the Fluctuating-Form (rise and fall regularly), Emergence (birth), Deforming (into a better form or condition), Metamorphoses (complete homogenous village form), Heterogeneous Form (annexing of outsiders, group of interests), and the Ascendant Form (the urban). The thesis notably develops a thorough reading of the asymmetrical power or the intercultural relations between the Israeli order and Palestinian architecture and the spatial practice post-1948, integrating postcolonial discourse, and explores a range of critical issues through the concepts of 'dichotomy', ‘hybridity’, ‘third space’, ‘resistance’ and the ‘in-between’. During the last three decades, more and more Palestinians have embraced their culture in resistance to obliteration, exclusion and meltdown. As the thesis examines, an important aspect of this resistance is evidenced in crucial changes in the spatial boundaries of Palestinian dwellings, evolving from a space of inaction or reaction, to a space of action, thereby departing from a long history of cultural diffidence towards a new experience of resistance – towards a 'fourth space’.

The study of the cultures has been a primary focus of sociology, psychology and anthropology since their inception. Increasing globalization has brought the attention of academics and practitioners to the study of national cultures and their differences into the management area. Likewise, the parallel trend towards running some business through projects has brought broader perspectives such as national cultures into the project management field. Recent academic literature demonstrated that national culture has a major impact on management practices. However, the element of national culture is elusively described in the project management field. No extensive tests were found on the comparison of the project planning among countries, which could help to establish relationship between national cultures and project planning capabilities. Using GLOBE study to capture national cultures and Project Management Planning Quality (PMPQ) model to capture project planning approach and organizational planning support, this paper addresses this gap by comparing national culture, project planning and organizational project planning support across four different countries: Malaysia, Japan, Sweden and Israel. The findings of this thesis are that there are both similarities and differences in project planning between different countries. In organizational project planning support practices, two clusters were identified. It attempts to answer questions about the relevance of culture to project planning and concludes with implications to project managers.

Linville, James Richard. „Israel in the Book of Kings : the past as a project of social identity“. Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30391.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The book of Kings provides an expression of social identity for the Persian-era (or perhaps Hellenistic) communities from which Judaism later emerged. Firm historical reconstructions of the book's provenance cannot be derived from a study of the book itself, but its symbolic complexity suggests that it was addressed not only to Judaean readers, but to the Diaspora as well. Its emphasis on themes of 'exile' over 'restoration' suggests the description of its perspective as 'exilicist'. Section One. Established historical critical research into Kings is suspect for its contradictory conclusions and too-simple association between literary features and authorial schools of thought. Kings is not profitably studied as part of a comprehensive history work produced by 'Deuteronomists'. Moreover, a range of dates later than the 6th century dates usually proposed is more probable. E.T. Mullen's 'constructionist' approach fails for want of a radical suspension of established scholarship into Kings. P.R. Davies' more sweeping critique and superior historical context can be adapted, while more attention is drawn to the Diaspora as influencing the composition of the book. Section Two. The schism between Judah and Israel is implicit in the description of the United Monarchy. Symbols of religious legitimacy, such as the 'throne of Israel' and the 'nagid (ruler) of Yahweh's people Israel', however, are traceable through the history of the two kingdoms, despite being unequally distributed between Judah and Israel. They are also symbols of a unified nation. The story of the schism recalls the exodus, and so is cast as a perversion of Israel's origin in which the nation is twice reborn. Section Three. Josiah's reign is the depiction of the transformation of the people from a 'monarchic' nation to an 'exilic' population, evidenced through the reforms and willing participation of the populace in rituals and ceremonies. Egypt plays a significant role in the closing chapters being the prototype, and, in some ways, the antithesis of Babylon. It is likely that Kings is recognising the legitimacy of Jadaean communities in Egypt.

The main purpose of this research is to investigate Jordan and Israel's participation in the Red Sea – Dead Sea Water Convenience project from human security point of view. The Red Sea – Dead Sea Water Conveyance project is planned to desalinate water from Red Sea to the Dead Sea and provide fresh water to Jordan, Israel and possibly Palestine. I use a human security approach in this investigation because it has a broader people-centered security perspective. This approach guides the research to consider water related issues and challenges in Jordan and Israel to which the project can be a possible solution. I use qualitative content analysis to investigate the issues identified by Jordan and Israel, and how the project is estimated to address these challenges. I argue that the estimated benefits that the implementation of the project provides for human well-being in Jordan and Israel makes them to participate in this project.

Annotation:
This thesis alms to develop a comprehensive understanding of cross-project learning in multiple-project environments. Cross-project learning is the process through which technologies are transferred and reused within organisations. Recent years have seen a growing interest in cross-project learning. However, research in this area has emphasised the rational, classical approach to crossproject learning. Also, the majority of research on cross-project learning has largely been on the automobile industry in Japan and the USA. Thirdly, research in this field has failed to assess the impact that cross-project learning has had on other organisational processes in product development. The conclusions of these studies are context-specific, fragmented and lack any critical assessment of the process of introducing cross-project learning. This study argues that a rather different approach to cross-project learning is needed. A three-level analysis is applied in the present study that highlights operational, dysfunctional and strategic aspects in cross-project learning. The empirical core of the research is the evidence from three in-depth case studies conducted in the Israeli electronics defence industry. Three different approaches to cross-project learning have been identified at the operational level, offering organisational mechanisms and managerial practices that have not previously been reported. At the dysfunctional operations level, the study reveals that the introduction of innovations in cross-project learning has impacted the past harmony between expertise development and knowledge management practices. The findings suggest that this harmony has broken down while the knowledge management and expertise development practices have been further transformed and developed. Lastly, at the strategic level of analysis, two potential cross-project learning strategies have been detected: exploit product success and design to reuse. A contingency model that emphasises the evolutionary development path of 'modes of reusability', subject to the 'strategic development' of the studied companies, concludes this study.

Annotation:
IT Outsourcing (contracting-out of Information Technology services) has become a pivotal economic trend in recent decades. This study traces the interlacing of IT Outsourcing with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software systems. Little research has considered the reciprocal relations between these two phenomena. This was the gap in knowledge addressed by the research. More specifically, the research investigated: why organisations turn to IT Outsourcing providers to implement and maintain ERP systems and what are the success factors for selective IT Outsourcing within ERP projects in Israel. Field research was conducted in organisations during 2006-2008, employing IT Outsourcing for ERP systems in two stages: Stage One used qualitative data-collection tools: five semi-structured interviews and fifteen open-ended questionnaires. Inductive content and thematic analysis conducted on data from these tools produced themes that formed the basis for a closed-ended questionnaire used in the next stage. Stage Two employed seventy two closed-ended questionnaires. Quantitative data from this questionnaire underwent deductive statistical analysis to test and confirm findings from Stage One. Results indicated that significant differences between ERP package-based centralised cross-organisational systems and the out-dated self-developed legacy IT systems produced different organisational requirements for IT Outsourcing services. Respondents thought it essential to employ IT Outsourcing for ERP projects, noting different motivations for this strategy. Respondents identified four success factor groups for IT Outsourcing in ERP projects, grading the factors according to relative importance. Management commitment and support was the most important success factor group. The research showed that organisations that implement ERP systems regard it as essential to employ the IT Outsourcing services since they provide experienced updated experts. Organisations stress that they need these services to ensure effective, operable systems, understanding that initially there is little cost reduction. Management commitment, wise choice of vendors and intelligent contracting can establish successful vendor-organisation collaboration. Contribution to knowledge is made by offering a better understanding of the unique phenomenon of IT Outsourcing within ERP projects in Israel, motivations to use and success factors

Laor, Tal.

Radio is one of the earliest and most powerful of all mass media, which explains its strong potential as a means of moral education, influence on public opinion, and role in public agenda setting. In Israel, educational radio stations operating out of academic institutions have been in operation for more than 50 years, yet no comprehensive study has examined the various aspects of their presence in the media, academic, community, and social spheres. Alongside extensive research on the radio industry, the purpose of the current study is to fill the lacuna in the literature on the role and contribution of educational radio stations operating out of colleges and universities in Israel. The educational radio project is the product of an encounter between two significant branches of Israeli society: One branch is The Voice of Israel, a major public media organization that sponsors the project, and the second, executive branch, is the academic institutions, which are prestigious institutions that train future generations through a variety of means, including intellectual development, knowledge, professional development, and, of course, research. To examine the educational radio stations’ role and contribution, we conducted a mixed methodology research combining qualitative and quantitative methods. To identify the historical milestones in the project’s development, we analyzed documents stored in The Voice of Israel archives, and conducted interviews with the station’s senior executives. Findings indicate that the project underwent several significant, complex, and bureaucratic changes involving important government organizations: the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Communications, and the Broadcasting Authority. Senior ministers of education were most markedly involved in determining the features of the educational radio project. The project, which was initiated in the early 1990s, now boasts 47 educational radio stations currently in operation in over 80 educational institutions including elementary schools, high schools, community centers, colleges, and universities, throughout Israel. The vision of the project’s founders was to develop media professionals with an understanding of the media industry, who would represent non-mainstream formats, issues, and opinions, including a liberal perspective and democratic value

This thesis analyzes the support and financing of start-up projects in Israel, especially in the period of years 2003 - 2015. Main goalof the thesis is to analyze the developmnet of of the Israeli startup environment, facts and the institutions that influence it. The thesis furthermore compares the development of the startup ecosystem in Israel and the USA during the period mentioned above. To achieve these goals the method of analysis has been chosen, especially causal, cestoral and system analysis. The thesis shows that the mains causes of the dynamic development of the startup ecosystem in Israel is in particular the government initiative together with the creation of the Office of the Chief Scientist, constantly rising spending on R&D and the associated support for venture capital funds. In comparison with the US, in Israel, the government sector plays a significant role in all types of support, whether financial or institutional, thus motivating foreign investors to enter the Israeli financial market. The success of the Israeli state lies also in its historical events, cultural habits and the features of the population. The main benefit of the thesis, except the analysis of the Israeli startup environment and its comparison with the US is a comprehensive analysis of the insignificant facts that influenced its current development.

Annotation:
This study investigates the proposal to establish a Palestinian State in accord with international policy and law. The research also looks into the reasons for the failure to establish such a state following the defeat of Arab armies in 1967 until the present time. These reasons can be summarized in the lack of clear strategic policy for the Palestinian leadership, the internal division of the Palestinian political institutions, and the Israeli practices and measures against Palestinians and the Palestinian leadership on both international and national levels to stop the establishment of this state. This study attempts to show that in the absence of true international support for a Palestinian State, the existence and vitality of such a state would depend on Israel's good intentions. However, the prospects to establish this state seem unattainable as a result of Israel's refusal to abide by international law and in the absence and inability of the international community including the consecutive American Presidents to exert pressure on Israel to even freeze settlement. Following Oslo Agreement, Palestinians found themselves in a situation to establish an entity that is more than autonomous self-rule but still less than a fully-fledged state. The study concludes that the possibility to create a Palestinian State has become unrealistic in current political and legal contexts

Annotation:
The research consists of an exploratory mixed-method research (Cresswell & Plano Clark, 2011) using a constructive Grounded Theory methodology (Charmaz, 2014, 2006). The object of study is experiences and transformations related to the practice of compassionate listening, as well as the process and type of spirituality at the heart of this approach for conflict transformation developed by The Compassionate Listening Project (TCLP) based in the United States. People get to sit with Israeli or Palestinian guest speakers and they listen to them share their story and experience with the conflict, wherever they can locate themselves in the political Spectrum. Trained with the compassionate listening approach, it becomes possible for them to affirm their deepest humanity and learn to hold the complexities related to the conflict (Cohen, 2011). 14 semi-structured interviews with delegates from the 2010 TCLP delegation, participant observation and document analysis, took place in the qualitative stage of the research. Followed by the administration of an online questionnaire to past participants of TCLP delegations between 1998 and 2015 (n=60). The study led to the emergence of a theoretical and practical Model named: Well-being Ecosystem for Inner and Outer peace, based on a social process theory (Glaser, 2005) informing on conditions and factors involved in the passage between three stages: from a feeling or state of separation with the other, to more communication and towards deep connection and communion. The integration chapter of the mixed methods presents four key pillars supporting this Model to help integrate an agenda of the heart to peace efforts, in the form of specific types of “responses of the heart” (affiliated to the notion of compassionate love, Fehr et al., 2009) inspired by the compassionate listening approach and series of variables, factors, and conditions to help cultivate a culture of peace in any environment. The quality of presence and environment at the relational level is exposed in the nexus of the notions of spirituality and practice for peacebuilding and conflict transformation. The research combines scientific and experiential knowledge in Social Sciences, Applied Religious Studies, Health and Contemplative Studies.
This paper examines an international SDP NGO in relation to the most challenging limitations facing the current Sport for Development and Peace sector. Employing an existing academic framework of the contemporary SDP sector, this case study explores under what conditions an SDP organization might begin to emancipate themselves from such limitations.
