AbstractThe concept of correlation is not just a theological approach. It corresponds to Tillich’s ontology which is a “self transcendent realism”: realism since God is in the world; self-transcendent because He is not the world. In the world there is more than just the world. For us, God is at once intimate and stranger. The correlation method expresses this ontological bipolarity.

Abstract A recent political critique of Speculative Realism by Catherine Malabou finds fault with this loosely arranged movement for its focus on reality in its own right, apart from the subject. Malabou responds with a radical ontological claim, holding effectively – if not always explicitly – that subject and object mutually generate one another amidst a primal void. After criticizing this idea, I point to some of the difficult political consequences of such a position, though Malabou defines it positively as an anarchic awakening that generates new collectivities unconstrained by any thing-in-itself. By contrast, I contend that nonhuman constraints and collaborators are an intimate part of the human political sphere. More generally, it is shown that there are consequences for which sorts of relations are taken to be the primary political relations.

In the late-19th-century Euro-American theatre of domestic realism, the tête-à-tête on the sitting room set was the signature convention for the staging of intimate relational exchange. Since the 1980s Marina Abramović has been reproducing this sedentary bodily arrangement in much of her work. While Abramović has sought to position her performance art in counterpoint to white bourgeois theatre, her sedentary dramas are haunted by the ghosts of this seemingly unrelated genealogy of performance.

This article explores some ways in which women not living with an intimate partner talk about their relationships with men. Data are considered in relation to social theorising on the changing nature of intimate relationships. The analysis makes use of traditions in narrative analysis and critical discursive psychology to identify some patterns in the telling, including common cultural resources that are drawn on by speakers. Patterned ways of portraying relationships identified in the data discussed here include a self-blame approach in describing extreme behaviour from the man concerned, and a repudiation of any intention of commitment through talk of the positive features of relationships with unavailable men. A further way of talking introduces a ‘new realism’ in which relationships are depicted as right for a time but dispensable when their time is up. The analysis suggests that concepts of individualisation and impermanence in relationships provide new cultural resources that women can draw on in providing a self-narrative. The data demonstrate the detailed rhetorical work involved in producing a positive account of the self as a single woman.

The article notes a trend towards low-key naturalism in twenty-first-century independent queer cinema. Focusing on work by Andrew Haigh, Travis Mathews and Ira Sachs, it argues that this observational style is welded to a highly meta-cinematic engagement with traditions of representing non-straight people. The article coins the term ‘New Gay Sincerity’ to account for this style, relating it to Jim Collins’s and Warren Buckland’s writing on post-postmodern ‘new sincerity’. At its crux, this new style centres itself in realism to record non-metropolitan, intimate and quotidian gay lives, while acknowledging the high-style postmodernism of oppositional 1990s New Queer Cinema.

“As If It Were True…”: Tadeusz Rittner’s Dubious Realism and Dubious Modernism This paper is an attempt at redefining selected plays written by Tadeusz Rittner in the modernist and symbolist convention. In the 1950s, they were evaluated by Zbigniew Raszewski as among the playwright’s lesser achievements. I have analysed three texts: the one-act plays Sąsiadka (“The Neighbour”) and Odwiedziny o zmroku (“A Visit at Dusk”) as well as the play Don Juan. There is no doubt that the author did not avoid stylistic exaggeration in his modernist works, but one can also find some distance from the conventions of the Young Poland period as well as the use of the grotesque, theatrical sham, and the poetics of intimate drama in these plays. Rittner’s Viennese character is an alibi for his aesthetic choices and the manner of staging emotions. The evaluation of these plays, which were written in the symbolist and modernist convention, was affected by the theatrical reception, the artists’ superficial reading of the instructions included in the stage directions, and the pigeonholing of the works as realism with a hint of Romantic mood.

Nurses deliver intimate care to patients in a variety of ways, especially when attending to showering, bathing, toileting and managing chronic or surgical wounds located in body regions such as the genitalia or breasts. Neophyte undergraduate nursing students can experience fear and anxiety at the thought of carrying out this level of care; hence, there is a need for preparation prior to undertaking clinical placements when students encounter real patients. The preparation should begin in the laboratory context of their tertiary educational settings. Traditionally, task trainers and manikins have been used to demonstrate and practise this care in such environments. However, the realism of experiencing true human responses, by both the patient and student, can be lost through these modalities. In recent years, a simulation approach, Mask-Ed, has enabled intimate care to be taught to students in a university setting in Australia where the laboratory context provides a safety net. Mask-Ed involves the informed educator wearing highly realistic silicone props that include torsos, faces and hands. Having donned the props, the educator then transforms into another person. The newly created person has a backstory designed to enable the educator to become a platform for teaching and to coach students through the clinical experience. The following discussion explains the background to Mask-Ed and the underlying framework that is used to implement the technique to teach intimate care. Mask-Ed is considered one of the most realistic approaches to simulation and is used in healthcare facilities and tertiary educational institutions globally.

This article casts light on the intimate relationship between metaphysics and science in Adam Smith’s thought. Understanding this relationship can help in resolving an enduring dispute or misreading concerning the status and role of natural theology and the ‘invisible hand’ doctrine. In Smith’s scientific realism, ontological issues are necessary prerequisites for scientific inquiry, and metaphysical ideas thus play an organizing and regulatory role. Smith also recognized the importance of scientifically informed metaphysics in science’s historical development. In this sense, for Smith, the metaphysico-scientific link (i.e. metaphysically coherent conjecture), was a basic criterion of scientific validation by Inference to the Best Explanation. Furthermore, Smith’s comments implicitly suggest that in scientific progress there is a dialectic between metaphysics and science. These themes are illustrated primarily through his writings on the history of astronomy.

In an attempt to address the issues in research and theory on consent, this thesis explores what consent can be seen as "doing" through an 'Intuitive Inquiry' (Anderson 2011a) and 'Agential Realism' (Barad 2007). Various manifestations of consent appears through: the experience of the researcher, consent research and theory, consent legislation, interviews with professionals in intimate-sexual consent, and, feminist fanzines. Consent evokes issues around agency, power, communication, respect, violence, risk, morals and ethics that go beyond sexual-intimate negotiation. Consent emerges as multiple, complex and fluid in 'intra-action' (ibid.) with the context. Entanglements and paradoxes of consent are further explored in 'diffractive analysis' (ibid.) through "bodily autonomy" and"rights/obligations". As a phenomenon, consent appears to make agency and power intelligible (to different degrees), but, can not be said to provide a viable strategy against sexual violence. The tenets of consent discourse risk (re)producing anxieties around intimacy and sex, responsibilizing survivors and obfuscating sexual violence. Further and improved research on communication in everyday sexual negotiation, sexual violence, consent legislation and what consent "does" is urgently needed.Through creative method and new epistemology the thesis (re)presents a knowledge process true to lived experience, as well as, an invitation to pull the terrible wonderful world, it's complexities, and us in it, closer.

Annotation:
This thesis approaches 'trauma' in theatre and performance from the perspective of communication studies. Since 'trauma' is an unspeakable and unrepresentable inner state, I thus conceptualize the term 'the traumatic/spectrum' to refer to layers of reality, meaning and experience that can be expressed, represented and/or spoken about in relation to a traumatizing encounter. Through practice-led research, I propose a multi-sensorial devising tool for theatre & performance makers primarily, and artists of all disciplines, to facilitate a performance process for individuals who have walked through a traumatic or post-traumatic journey ('journeyers'), and have a desire, need or purpose to communicate to an audience. Based on a syncretism in journalism, ethnography, psychology, and art therapy techniques, this methodology draws out the form and the content through which individuals desire to communicate about their experiences. Conceptualized here as the re-creation process, this methodology tackles different types of communication predicaments or 'distance' between audiences and 'journeyers' when addressing the traumatic, including: disbelief, voyeurism or sensationalism, and the tendency to habituate, fatigue, de-sensitize, avoid, avert and/or alienate from the traumatic and those who journey with this reality. In response, I endorse the interrelation of two aesthetic manifestations that can 'bridge' different types of psychological, emotional, sociocultural and physical 'distance': one is a realm of theatre & performance which renders semantic and somatic forms of expression indivisible, and the other is Magical Realism. These aesthetics are applied as channels and strategies to engage participants in a meaningful, empowering, and pleasurable 'shared' experience beyond the therapeutic. Finally, I propose the term traumagical realism to further identify and explore the parallels between Magical Realism and the traumatic. Traumagical Realism is a liminal territory that can offer a deeper understanding of the traumatic, and catalyze a social, aesthetic and affective force of engagement or 'commun(e)ication' between 'journeyers' and all participants involved in the devising process and culmination of a performance.

Annotation:
This thesis is concerned with both the dangers and opportunities of China’s relations with the contemporary world and with the U.S.-led West in particular. It takes an unconventional approach to these issues in critically examining mainstream Western studies of Chinese foreign policy as a particular kind of discourse. The thesis focuses, more specifically, on the two dominant Western perspectives on China, (neo)realism and (neo)-liberalism. In doing so, it engages the questions of how Western discursive practice has come to shape and dominate the ways we think of and deal with ‘China’ in international relations, and how, as a result, China has often come to formulate its foreign policy in line with the prescribed meaning given to it by Western-based China scholars. In this context, the thesis argues that to deconstruct the processes by which China is given particular ‘meanings’ by Western discourses—and by which those meanings are transformed into both Western and Chinese foreign policy—is the key to a more profound understanding of Sino-Western relations and, perhaps, a first step towards ameliorating its problems and realising its potential for long-term peace and mutual prosperity.

McGonigal-Kenney, Meghan L. „An intangible reality: the experience of uncertainty among intimate partners of persons with prodromal huntington disease“. Diss., University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3351.

Annotation:
Knowledge of genetic predisposition to future illness and disability creates uncertainties that shape and influence life decisions about reproduction, career, health behavior, and the need for care. Current research has not yet identified the meaning of the experience of feeling uncertain among intimate partners of persons who have received genetic information pertaining to future health status. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the meaning of uncertainty as a lived experienced among intimate partners of persons who have tested positive for a mutation in the gene causing Huntington disease (HD) but have not yet been clinically diagnosed with HD. The specific aims were to create a rich, vivid description of uncertainty as experienced by this population and to present these findings within an existential phenomenological perspective. Using van Manen's hermeneutic-phenomenological methodology, experiential descriptions from 10 intimate partners of persons in the prodromal phase of HD were obtained. Thematic aspects of the lived experience of uncertainty were uncovered and isolated; essential themes were determined; and linguistic transformations were composed. The analysis revealed four essential themes, indicating that the meaning of the lived experience of uncertainty was 1) an intangible reality characterized by 2) anticipating with ebbing and flowing disquietude while feeling 3) a weighty pull to dwell upon, towards inner turmoil and 4) a subdued presence with freeing possibilities. The implications of these findings are that nurses need to ensure adequate opportunity is created in which the meaning of the lived experience of uncertainty can be ascertained and explored among persons who are on the cusp of the inevitable but not yet graspable. Continued research is needed to further address the implications of being situated in this potentially fracturing phase of the disease trajectory and to determine appropriate interventions.

Kossurok, Anke. „Making the invisible visible : a grounded theory study of female adult trauma survivors reconstructing reality with supportive others“. Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31218.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Violence against women and children is a pervasive challenge across the globe. Research has shown that survivors of interpersonal violence, such as child maltreatment and intimate partner violence, may develop a complex form of post-traumatic stress disorder accompanied by, for example, difficulties in regulating emotions and relating to others. Additional mental health and social problems contribute to survivors' long-term impairment. Therefore, it is imperative that we understand the key elements and processes that facilitate trauma recovery. The majority of research places survivors as individuals at the core of understanding trauma and recovery, which makes it an intrapsychic problem focused on, for example, the individual's cognitive bias, maladaptive interpersonal behaviour, or emotion dysregulation which need repairing, rather than considering appropriately the role of context, external factors and social processes. Thus, trauma recovery may be more complicated. The current study explored key elements and processes of trauma recovery in female adult survivors with a focus on emotional and interpersonal skills, within the narratives of individuals constructing their own recovery within an interpersonal context. Fifteen female adult survivors were recruited from a statutory clinical service and a third-sector community project. Participants were interviewed individually, and data were analysed qualitatively using grounded theory. The study constructed a framework of four key components. Women survivors initially disengaged from feelings, other people and themselves (1), gradually made hidden experiences visible (2) and examined these (3), and eventually reconstructed their reality (4). Although not always a linear process, this framework revealed a transition from self-guided to supported self-management. Women survivors sought out relationships, were impacted by relationships, and these relationships changed the way survivors responded. Thus, female trauma survivors reconstructed abuse, trauma and identity through various supportive others. Similarly, female survivors reframed emotional and interpersonal difficulties and gradually managed these through relationships. Future research as well as theories, practices and policies need to consider the multifaceted and relational nature of interpersonal trauma recovery. Guidelines and practices, for instance, could include community-focused strategies that provide a larger network of support to survivors and, thus, would offer multiple opportunities to experience positive interactions. Equally, mandatory training of health care staff about interpersonal violence and subsequent trauma as well as training in relating positively to survivors would make a real difference.

This study has its object of research the poetry of Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão, attempting the understanding of what the perfect speech means to the author herself. Detailed examination of the poem Teoria da Realidade tratando-a por tu (The Theory or Reality getting familiar with it), reflects the complete author´s poetic, embracing Fiama´s work as a whole. The poem analyzed makes part of the series Poetics (Poetics) from the Cenas Vivas (Living Scenes) book dated from the year 2000. There is in this poem the unfolded poetic subject that chases her muttering voice. We can say the enunciation subject tells us how the poetic voice had emerged, developed, acquiring the perfect speech thus offering it at last to its readers. Since the publication of Morfismos (Morphisms) in 1961, the Author worries about the language narrowness, rescuing from its ordinary use. Giving autonomy to it as well as searching what she had called the poetry/noun. This way Fiama´s poetry filiation relies on the modern tradition and specifically in Mallarmé. Her poems witness all the things that has been written and read by her. From great epics to the Bible, the Anglo-Germanic tradition to the great American poets also including in this list the Portuguese tradition as well. The path throughout her work has chased poems that are poetic, in other words, that the theme is the poetry itself, revealing the envisioning and the knowledge Fiama has from reality as well as poetry. It has been detected she opted for reality. The poetic material for her, belongs to the Earth where there is a concern to unveil what is real. These matters have been attested based on the reading of the poems of the Obra Breve Poesia Reunida (Brief Works). The poetic path selected ended up in the Teoria da Realidade tratando-a por tu (Theory of Reality- getting familiar with it), this has exposed us the intimacy that she has gained with reality, revealing at same the time how her poetic voice blossomed.

Annotation:
This dissertation tracks a series of literary interventions into scientific debates of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, showing how the realist novel generated new techniques of description in response to pressing philosophical problems about agency, materiality, and embodiment. In close conversation with developments in the sciences, writers such as George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Olive Schreiner portrayed human agency as contiguous with rather than opposed to the pulsations of the physical world. The human, for these authors, was not a privileged or even an autonomous entity but a node in a web of interactive and co-constitutive materialities. Focused on works of English fiction published between 1870-1920, I argue that the historical convergence of a British materialist science and a vitalistic Continental natural philosophy led to the rise of a dynamic realism attentive to material forces productive of “character.” Through the literary figure of character and the novelistic practice of description, I show, turn-of-the-century realists explored what it meant to be an embodied subject, how qualities in organisms emerge and develop, and the relationship between nature and culture more broadly.

This book explores ephemeral exhibition spaces between 1750 and 1918. The chapters focus on two related spaces: the domestic interior and its imagery, and exhibitions and museums that display both national/imperial identity and the otherness that lurks beyond a country’s borders. What is revealed is that the same tension operates in these private and public realms; namely, that between identification and self-projection, on the one hand, and alienation, otherness and objectification on the other. In uncovering this, the authors show that the self, the citizen/society and the other are realities that are constantly being asserted, defined and objectified. This takes place, they demonstrate, in a ceaseless dynamic of projection versus alienation, and intimacy versus distancing.

This ground-breaking book brings theoretical perspectives from twenty-first century media, film, and cultural studies to medieval hagiography. Medieval Saints and Modern Screens stakes the claim for a provocative new methodological intervention: consideration of hagiography as media. More precisely, hagiography is most productively understood as cinematic media. Medieval mystical episodes are made intelligible to modern audiences through reference to the filmic - the language, form, and lived experience of cinema. Similarly, reference to the realm of the mystical affords a means to express the disconcerting physical and emotional effects of watching cinema. Moreover, cinematic spectatorship affords, at times, a (more or less) secular experience of visionary transcendence: an 'agape-ic encounter'. The medieval saint's visions of God are but one pole of a spectrum of visual experience which extends into our present multi-media moment. We too conjure godly visions: on our smartphones, on the silver screen, and on our TVs and laptops. This book places contemporary pop-culture media - such as blockbuster movie The Dark Knight, Kim Kardashian West's social media feeds, and the outputs of online role-players in Second Life - in dialogue with a corpus of thirteenth-century Latin biographies, 'Holy Women of Liège'. In these texts, holy women see God, and see God often. Their experiences fundamentally orient their life, and offer the women new routes to knowledge, agency, and belonging. For the holy visionaries of Liège, as with us modern 'seers', visions are physically intimate, ideologically overloaded spaces. Through theoretically informed close readings, Medieval Saints and Modern Screens reveals the interconnection of decidedly 'old' media - medieval textualities - and artefacts of our 'new media' ecology, which all serve as spaces in which altogether human concerns are brought before the contemporary culture's eyes.

Chapter 6 deals with interactions with the religious other, namely Jains, outside the courts and most significantly at temples. The chapter highlights the ambiguity in Harihara’s depictions of Jains, who are presented as utterly alien to Śaiva dispositions but also intimately close in terms of daily living. Harihara’s rendering of the wholly other is complicated by the text’s implicit admittance of the intimate presence of the wholly other in the mundane life of most Śaivas—at temples, in marketplaces, and even in the domestic sphere through interreligious marriages. Thus, Chapter 6 reads the aggressive alienation of Jains in the Ragaḷegaḷu stories against the text’s silent admittance in a social reality made of some amount of religious coexistence.

AbstractThe three chapters in this part of the book have quite different starting points, objectives and questions. This makes them rich and allows a dialogue between the authors on a meta-level: not in the methods of description or analysis of the daily life of migrants, or the representations in their new lives, but in the one that questions the choices made by the producers of images to account for this reality, immaterial, intimate and profound.

What is political realism other than a form of political analysis and speaking truth to power? What is the national interest other than an ideological fiction of political idealism? The concluding chapter ties two intellectual halves together: there is Kelsen the gentle liberal and champion of open society ideals, and there is Kelsen the no-nonsense realist of political and international life. The synthesised progressive realist doesn’t believe in magic bullets or easy formulas: when it comes to the question of progress, there is the real You and the real Me, and in between, in some intimate place, is the twilight zone where the real political battle rages. What real realists do is take this struggle for power and peace to the international arena and work unceasingly towards global reform.

This chapter traces Duvivier’s return to France in 1945, and his difficulties in readjusting to a new film-making climate that now feted new directors and emphasised authentic, location-filmed reality. The chapter pays close attention to one of Duvivier’s key post-war films, Panique (1946). Although the film was a failure – critics likened it to pre-war poetic realism, a style and sensibility not in vogue in the changed artistic and political post-war landscape – Panique cleverly incorporates the pessimism of Duvivier’s 1930s films, while grafting on a new set of political and social contexts. Like David Golder and the figure of the Jew, Panique sheds light on another problematic representation in Duvivier’s oeuvre; it stands as an exemplar of viciously misogynistic ‘réalisme noir’ which seemed to scapegoat women for wartime collaboration. The chapter also looks at the different films Duvivier shot at this time. As well as darker works like Panique and Voici le temps des assassins (1956), Duvivier also made broad comedies, an adaptation of Anna Karenina, and intimate chamber pieces. One of his least known films – La Fête à Henriette (1952) – will be analysed to showcase Duvivier’s deft visual and narrative touch.

Annotation:
By turns elegiac and polemical, Maurice Pialat’s twenty-minute essay film L’Amour existe (1960) encompasses at once an individual life, the history of France from the pre-war period through WWII and the Trente Glorieuses, and the visual representation of the banlieue from Impressionist painting to poetic realism. The ineluctable push of time is embodied in the forward motion of trains, buses, bicycles and people, as well as in slow tracking or panning shots that survey the impoverished landscapes of greater Paris from dawn to dusk and into the night. The author underscores the formative qualities of an intimate, unseen and lost space in which suburban beauty lays hidden, and where, in keeping with Pialat’s chosen title, ‘love exists’. Behind the overwhelming forces of poverty, routine and modernization that its richly layered commentary denounces, L’Amour existe points to what these forces have silenced, what could have been revealed but remained invisible and unsaid. The critical faculty of the movie camera to reveal hidden realities in the apparently bleakest of worlds is reaffirmed.

The Steer-By-Wire (SBW) paradigm for vehicle control offers many advantages over traditional use of mechanical steering systems but comes at the cost of loss of proprioception (“road feel”). To this end, haptic interfaces for SBW systems have been proposed to restore the intimacy of interactive control back to the driver. However, the degree of realism for the interaction is dependent on the fidelity of the underlying computational vehicle dynamics model. Hence we focus on quantitative comparative testing of the role of vehicle dynamics modeling fidelity for haptic SBW tasks. Additionally the SBW paradigm can simplify implementation of shared/collaborative control (steering) of the underlying mechanical system (vehicle). Possibilities range from sharing of control between multiple individual users or between user and automation technology. Performance evaluation of 3 modes of shared control vs. individual control of driving was carried out and preliminary analysis of results is presented in the paper.

Today, we have a situation that the new media environment has reshaped our conception of reality while changing social spaces, modes of existence, and the functional mechanisms of the private sphere. In the space of new media, the boundary between privacy and publicity is redefined with the emergence of multiple network communities having become a subject of observation and evaluation, collective discussions, and even third party interventions. In the current situation, the privacy/publicity boundary can be defined both through the societal/the individual, and through such concepts as visible/invisible. The new media era sees the personification of online publicness, therefore the very sphere of private life gets consumed by the public sphere open both for being discussed and for being controlled by the government, market, and advertisement. The public sphere has fallen under the power of certain private/vested interests, which only transiently become common, coinciding with the interests of other groups, but not the public sphere. The ambivalent nature of new media, while based on personalisation and filtration, obviously determines the ambiguous and controversial relationship of the public and the private. Thus, the private not only reflects, but also represents the public, whereas the public implements privacy up to its inherent special intimate atmosphere and intonation. This fast-changing virtual reality requires the development of conceptual tools for analysing new content and forms of social and personal life, one of which is the relationship between publicity and privacy.

Annotation:
One of the main causes for post angioplasty arterial restenosis is the excessive stress induced in the arterial wall during and after the medical intervention. The closed stent is introduced in the artery wrapped around the deflated balloon catheter and is expanded in the final position by inflating the balloon. Unfortunately, this process also stretches the arterial wall. Additionally, for the stent to be successful, its diameter must be slightly larger than the diameter of the inflated artery. The stent is usually a dense mesh of interconnected beams. Therefore, it is often considered that it applies a constant pressure to the artery / stent interface. However, in reality each beam individually presses against the innermost layer of the artery (intima). The current study proposes a model, which predicts the arterial wall subsurface stress field due to individual stent beams. It was found that the local shape of the contact (beam cross section) plays an important role close to the stent / intima contact. Sharper edged cross sections (e.g. square) promote higher stresses. It was observed that during restenosis a new inner layer (neointima) is formed, significantly reducing the stent efficiency. This could be related to local stress concentrations due to the choice of stent beam profile.

Cavitating bubbly flows are encountered in many engineering problems involving propellers, pumps, valves, ultrasonic biomedical applications, … etc. In this contribution an OpenMP parallelized Euler-Lagrange model of two-phase flow problems and cavitation is presented. The two-phase medium is treated as a continuum and solved on an Eulerian grid, while the discrete bubbles are tracked in a Lagrangian fashion with their dynamics computed. The intimate coupling between the two description levels is realized through the local void fraction, which is computed from the instantaneous bubble volumes and locations, and provides the continuum properties. Since, in practice, any such flows will involve large numbers of bubbles, schemes for significant speedup are needed to reduce computation times. We present here a shared-memory parallelization scheme combining domain decomposition for the continuum domain and number decomposition for the bubbles; both selected to realize maximum speed up and good load balance. The Eulerian computational domain is subdivided based on geometry into several subdomains, while for the Lagrangian computations, the bubbles are subdivided based on their indices into several subsets. The number of fluid subdomains and bubble subsets are matched with the number of CPU cores available in a share-memory system. Computation of the continuum solution and the bubble dynamics proceeds sequentially. During each computation time step, all selected OpenMP threads are first used to evolve the fluid solution, with each handling one subdomain. Upon completion, the OpenMP threads selected for the Lagrangian solution are then used to execute the bubble computations. All data exchanges are executed through the shared memory. Extra steps are taken to localize the memory access pattern to minimize non-local data fetch latency, since severe performance penalty may occur on a Non-Uniform Memory Architecture multiprocessing system where thread access to non-local memory is much slower than to local memory. This parallelization scheme is illustrated on a typical non-uniform bubbly flow problem, cloud bubble dynamics near a rigid wall driven by an imposed pressure function.

Abstract: In the 1950s Le Corbusier brings into being the convent of Sainte Marie de la Tourette which was recognised by the Oeuvre complète as his “most significant work” as it was “a confrontation and a synthesis of its evolution from Cartuja de Ema, that he discovered and drew in Italy in 1911…” This article attempts to reveal the meaning of this affirmation, centring the focus of its attention on the 5 year fase of the project between 1953 and 1957. It is in this period of design and development of ideas at the Atelier de LC, prior to construction, that we discover the keys to understand and explain the work. The following sections are arranged in the project’s chronological order and in each one two characteristic concepts are analysed. This binary procedure is frequently used by the architect so that the concepts and ideas explode, become transparent or show their intimate structure with a higher intensity than if they were presented in isolation, providing a deliberation like a flat surface that is impossible to bite. Rotodynamic pumps designed by traditional methods have persisted at their current levels of maturity, vis-à-vis performance and efficiency, for decades now. These historical statistics of performance have been formulated as industry standard charts of efficiency based on specific speed and flow-rate (Fig. 1). Through the last decade, research activity aimed at challenging and surpassing these historical performance levels, via the application of various optimization methods and tools, has been slowly but surely building up. The work presented in this paper is one such effort to enhance the performance of a pump, with the impeller blade of a medium specific speed centrifugal pump chosen as its subject, the blade being the heart of any turbo-machine. This study is somewhat unique in the respect that intuitive, high-level features were used to optimize the blade design rather than inanimate variables. A radical and proprietary blade development scheme allowed a 75% reduction in the number of parameters needed to fully describe the blade, compared to conventional blade layout and development schemes. A software suite comprised of an intimate blend of proprietary and commercial tools, for design, performance simulation and optimization, constituted the engine for this study. A template was generated with all software linked in a seamless bi-directional communication loop for hands-off execution of the optimization study (Fig. 3). A Design of Experiments (DoE) scheme is used to generate several hundred design points corresponding to different geometry and flow configurations. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software was used to simulate the performance and yield integrated output parameters, viz., head, power, and efficiency, for each design point at multiple flow-rates. Data from the simulated DoE table was then used to generate an n-dimensional Response Surface (RS), which established pre-validated relationships of the output to the input parameters. Finally, a Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) technique was used to extract the most efficient designs satisfying other weighted goals or objectives. The weighting process forces some objectives to be sacrificed to a certain extent in favor of others, which is a good reflection of reality, since a trade-off between different objectives is an essential element of any design process. The predictions from the optimizer were then subjected to a final round of CFD simulations for validation. Two discrete application examples were used as test cases for this study, using the optimization template described in the foregoing. This multi objective optimization approach resulted in a performance improvement of 2 efficiency points over a mature baseline blade design, developed using an advanced proprietary design code. Traditional CFD-assisted design enhancements were found to provide less than 1 point of efficiency improvement over this baseline design.
